Traps, Rivers and Arches, Oh My

Zazu checks on Boyo to make sure the bunny is awake and the party heads south.
Ash nods to Zazu that South it is but she’s too busy stepping around fungus to notice much of anything.
Grindar and Cotton lead the way forward both being on high alert for potential danger
Lothlo heads south with the others readying an arrow for whatever hostiles may exist on the other side.
Naithi is ready for trouble and holds her breath as she goes down the hallway.

The party moves through the exit currently facing south. They find themselves in a new room, this one of plain stone and filled with statues. Each statue is about 10 feet tall and they’re of a huge variety of species, noble and non, and a wide variety of professions, from plain cooks to powerful knights.

Other than their number the statues don’t seem particularly special, though you’ll have to pass among them to cross the room.

Lothlo scans the room for signs of life.

Noting that the statues are about 10 feet tall, he then looks to see if there are any statues where the species being depicted actually built to scale and any species that are of the stone variety and prepares for an ambush.

Náro thinks that this new revelation about how, at least in this room, there appears to be a regular pattern to the walls' movements-- he voices that this suggests that they might be automated, rather than being directed by an individual, which is good for the party. He keeps on the alert about the statues, preparing to cast a magic missile at a particularly unpleasant-looking cook-- seriously, why would anyone make a mold of such an unattractive expression?

Grindar asks if someone can cast detect magic

Beech obliges Grindar and thinks of the stories his mom told him wondering if statues should be created at all
Ash suggests they should stay where they are and start clearing the statues before proceeding. She also casts her own detect magic.
Lothlo looks for any statues built to scale and prepares for an ambush.
Náro suggests to the party that the movements of the entrances / hallways might be automated.
Zazu looks for traps or a way to navigate the room between the walls and the statues
Beech questions Ash’s directives to destroy the statue

Destroying the statues is certainly possible, but assuming the cavern is filled with them it would likely take hours to destroy them all. None of the ones in immediate sight read as magical.

Zazu’s is unable to devise a way to navigate the room to avoid the statues but his keen eyes spot a trap. Almost right off the bat there is a square of floor which has 2 elven archers with drawn bow and knocked arrows aimed at it. Anyone stepping on that square would trigger one of the statues shooting an arrow at the person on the square. Zazu can attempt to disable the trap if he’d like.

Zazu points out the trap to everybody. Can the trap can be easily avoided simply by not walking there?

The rogue looks at the trap, trying to figure out how hard it would be to disarm (OOC: discern the disarm DC?). Also, the wizard casts Prestidigitation to change the color of the trigger square to red -- spell range is 10 ft, so Zazu is not touching it!

When Zazu points out the trap, Grindar looks to see if there is a way around it. If there is, he directs Cotton around the trap and follows. If there is no way around, he reaches into his backpack, and pulls out his masterwork thieves tools, and says, ”I’m not the most skilled with these, but I can give it a go, or maybe assist someone more capable.”

With the revelation that this room is trapped, Lothlo tries to detect any additional traps in the area.
When Niall makes his mad dash Lothlo watches his feet to see what spots are safe to step on, and readies himself to jump to a safe square should a trap be sprung that put him in danger.

Zazu takes the time to try to figure out how difficult it would be to disable the trap. He also casts prestidigitation to change the color of the booby trapped floor tile. They could go around it, but it would involve climbing over statues. The room seems set up to channel the group to the trap.
Grindar gets to work disabling the trap and low and behold he hears a satisfying click meaning that the arrow trap will no longer trigger if someone steps on it.
Niall gets bored waiting for his friends to disarm the trap and makes a mad dash across the room he gets as far as a choke point between 2 statues of warriors in armor armed with swords. As he bolts between them the 2 statues swing their blades down at him.

Lothlo looks for any additional traps in the immediate area. The spot that Zazu discovered and Grindar disarmed seems to be the only one in the immediate area and Niall didn’t appear to trigger any other traps until he hit the sword statues that attacked just him as he was alone.

Naithi reflects on the skills of her comrades.

Niall’s move aside from hurting him has also made it more difficult for the rest of the group to navigate the room. The 2 angled swords bar the path to the hallway. The space between the statues occupied with the angled swords has become difficult terrain and anyone attempting to navigate it must succeed at a DC 10 Escape Artist or Acrobatics check or take 4 damage from the blades.

Zazu looks google-eyed at Niall. Boyo, peeking out of a pocket, is surprised too.

"What's that Boyo?" asks Zazu. "Why did you say, 'Hold my beer.' And what's that you're calling Niall? A Leeroy Jenkins type?"

As Grindar disables the arrow trap, a smile of satisfaction crosses his face, then Niall runs past, and the half-orc shakes his head, and then he cringes a bit as the swords come down, and says “And that my friends is why we don’t just rush into places!” Somehow the overly muscled half- orc makes it past the swords unscathed. Cotton's eyes reveal her pain as she cuts herself trying to get past the swords. her mouth opens as if she were whimpering, but no sound comes out. Grindar sees her pain, strokes her behind the ears, and says, "Are you OK girl?" then after checking her over, he says to her "You've had worse scratches then this before, lets catch up to that foolish paladin, before he gets himself killed!" Hearing her master's words of concern was all Cotton needed, and she's is ready for action once again. the two hurry to catch up with Niall.

I shake my head as the others charge forth recklessly. So that's the tactful and stealthy approach we decided was the safest choice. Run straight into the traps, they'll never expect it!

Zazu and Boyo are surprised. Boyo appears to have an odd sense of humor and Zazu is just puzzled.
Grindar is satisfied with the work he did on the arrow trap but disappointed a bit with Niall’s antics. He remarks that that is why one does not rush into things before deftly avoiding the blades. Sadly Cotton was not so fortunate but after some reassurance from Grindar she is ready to continue
Niall calls out to the others that he found a trap before laying upon hands and pressing on.
Ash takes her time and avoids the blades following after the others albeit at a slower pace.
Lothlo checks the trap to see if there is a way to prevent them from injuring folks. It looks like it was the intention of the trap designer for the blades to lock in place after the trap was triggered and create a hazard. Still though the swords are just well swords. He might be able to sunder them if he tries.
Beech continues to let the others work on the traps
Naithi and her mount make dramatic jumps and climb over the blades.

(OOC: I rolled an over / under 50 on the d100 to see if Grindar and Cotton catch up to Niall and both beat it)

Niall continues his mad dash forward with Grindar and Cotton trying to catch up to him. They reach the paladin shortly after Niall reaches a statue that resembles a small pile of skulls near the exit. Shortly after they catch up to Niall the mouths of the statues open and 6 acid splashes fly forward from their open mouths targeting Grindar, Cotton and Niall.

Grindar - 20 vs Touch; 11 vs Touch; 1 hit - 3 acid damage
Cotton - 14 vs Touch; 10 vs Touch; 1 hit - 3 acid damage

Niall, Grindar and Cotton are near the exit, near the pile of skulls. Everyone else is either following after them at a slower pace or still near the entrance.

Regarding the trap out of the pile of skulls, for anyone near it, and right now it is just Niall Grindar and Cotton. Oh! What a lucky find! Try to save as much of that acid as your can. We can use it to tenderizer the woodier the mushrooms.

(I'm picturing something similar to using lemon juice on kale. If someone determines that the Yahoo resets she will try to collect the acid in vials or empty potion containers... ... ... We were unable to collect the magic water, correct? Those containers are still empty?)

Ash furrows her brows at Naithi's suggestion. "Uh, Naithi? I can make acid any time we need it. It's a lot safer than trying to collect some from a trap. Given how much damage it causes just by touching it, I'm also not sure it would be wise to put any on your food"

Ash holds her ground until given the ok to proceed.

Zazu continues the slow and steady work of trap detection and removal, sad that so many friends are suddenly so foolhardy.

Grindar gives off a grunt as the acid hits him, and Cotton gives a silent scream. He than says, "Niall, my friend, has anyone ever told you there is a difference between bravery and foolhardy? So as to avoid further confusion, running through a room full of traps isn't an act of bravery, it's foolishness! Note to self, when the paladin with a death wish tries something like this again, don't follow him!"

Grindar and Cotton quickly move away from the acid trap, so as to, hopefully, avoid another acid splash.

Naithi suggests they try to save the acid for use as a tenderizer
Ash suggests just having her create Acid if they need it but then questions the wisdom of putting it in food. She waits before proceeding.
Niall explains he collected some on his face and it is better to leave here.
Lothlo is surprised Naithi wants to use Acid for cooking. He tries to remember where the acid came from and if there is a way to avoid that trap completely. He can’t really see it and doesn’t opt to proceed. He doesn’t find any new traps in his vicinity either.
Zazu continues looking for traps to disarm. It seems Niall set them all off, but Zazu’s still going to have to climb over those statue blades.
Grinder decides to never follow Niall’s charge again.

There is no way to collect acid from the trap as it is magical in nature and creates it with a spell. Due to it’s magical nature it also vanishes after a time, defying any attempts to collect it. Probably a good thing as flesh eating acid would likely dissolve any food applied to. And anyone foolish enough to try to eat it.

Zazu, Beech, and Naro still need to climb around the blades and catch up to the rest of the party. Since it’s already triggered disabling it will not reset the blade’s position (reminder: it’s a DC 10 escape artist or acrobatics check, failure means you take 4 damage)

Beech avoids the blades and rejoins with the rest. He points out the difference between acidic cooking and using actual acid to cook.

Niall explains his moves were a calculated risk and he wanted the party to be able to get to the end before being trapped. He heals himself again.

Lothlo proceeds cautiously past the skulls and past the range of the acid
Grindar looks ahead for any danger as he leads the way.
Naithi argues her food is safe to eat and that the party needs to think of acid like fire in that you use fire to cook food but you don’t eat fire. She asks the others to tell her they don’t eat flaming food.

The party seems to have gotten past all the traps. The party moves out of the room and into the newest hallway only to emerge in the familiar glow of the room you started in. Music again starts and the hall you came out of is filled in while one to the south is constructed.

With Cyrchwr Mawr at the ready, Grindar moves into the next room. He makes a point of taking point, more out of habit than because he feels he's best suited to do so, but willingly falls behind if anyone else insists on the position, as he has no ambitions to try to become the alpha of his new pack. In fact, he would prefer it if no one took the alpha role, but instead each member of the pack take the lead in the roles they are best equipped for, and he knows he is skilled at scouting, though he willingly admits he is by no means the best.

He keeps his eyes peeled for anything that may cause himself, or his new pack any harm. (Perception 23)

Zazu notes that the party has come around again and that the hallway is pointing somewhere new. He also keeps an eye out for danger.
Ash had given up on the handprints instead she waits for someone else to follow Zazu so she can follow them.
Lothlo readies his bow in case they are going to deal with another abush.
Niall keeps his sword at the ready and moves in with the others.
Grindar readies his axe. He takes point again while reflecting on group hierarchy. He also keeps his eyes peeled.
Beech agrees with Ash’s sentiment about the hand prints and proceeds w/ bow drawn into the next room.
Naithi and Camalayas stand in a defensive position and wait.

Everyone is on high alert so you can imagine the surprise when a Lantern Archon pops in grabs Náro by the hand and says “Excuse me but Náro is needed elsewhere. I don’t have time to explain.” And just like that he’s gone.

The next room is lit by the same strange glow as the previous one. It’s layout is very different though. You find yourselves in a giant amphitheatre, stone steps that double as benches running all the way down to a raised stage. A giant arch rests there, big enough for a minotaur to walk through comfortably, with two great doors hanging from it.

To the left, away from the raised stage, is the newly built hallway out.

Grindar is a little taken aback by the appearance of the archon, but is less surprised then his new friends seem to be. After all he has seen multiple friends spirited away in similar ways, like his dear friend Bigby, and sometimes, like his friend Haemir, they return when least expected. Heck even he, to some degree, was spirited away, though by his friend Succotash, not a achon.

"Well met Naro, I hope to see you again!" the big half-orc says as his new companion disappears.

"I'm not so sure now is the time to be taking in a show", Grindar says, "Maybe we should use the new entrance while we have a chance." The Ranger walks over to the new entrance and peers in, making a point of staying in the amphitheater room. He is on high alert, (perception 28) and encourages Cotton to keep her nose to the wind, but the albino rapke is too preoccupied by a stone she found, which looks like a ball, and she keeps rolling it around, the ground, with her nose. (perception 9)

Zazu hopes to meet Náro again someday. He takes a look at the surroundings and then settles into a seat hoping to be entertained.

Ash remarks that things like coming and going from this place since first Grindar appeared and then Náro left. She wonders if something will come for her. When Zazu remarks about a performance she wonders if the lute player will appear and perform.
Lothlo hopes Náro takes care and the looks around for signs of danger.
Beech suggests they attempt the open hallway.
Niall remarks that the archon nabbing is good bye and then wonders if they all should take a seat.

The party waits. There’s discussion of waiting for a show. There’s discussion of leaving while they can. The stage is dominated by the arch so anyone putting on a show would have to stand in it, but those doors are blocking the view. Zazu feels understanding and comprehension through the telempathic link with Boyo. As well as a certain amount of satisfaction at having figured it out before his master has.

"What's that Boyo? You know the answer? Well good for you!" Zazu is actually proud of the baby bunny. "Well, what's the answer?"

The familiar wriggles and bumps and nibbles and makes a couple cute bunny noises.

And soon all Zazu feels from the bun-bun is frustration at his inability to actually communicate with Zazu, unlike the times when Zazu just pretends that they can talk to each other.

And impatience for the day when he can "speak with master" -- and on that day, Boyo will have a lot to tell Zazu!

Zazu can’t fathom the purpose of the constructs. Boyo has an idea but has no way of communicating with his master at this point in time.
Ash can also glean information about the constructs and is capable of communicating with the others so she explains that if the door constructs are intelligent they likely have orders that they will not react unless some condition is met and if said condition is met the reaction is likely to be violent. She then backs away.
Grindar isn’t keen on getting to know the constructs better but he steps forward as if to walk through the doors ready to attack if it turns out to be an ambush.
Niall also approaches the doors.
Lothlo keeps an eye out for danger drawing a second arrow in case danger presents itself.
Beech shakes his head and draws his own bow.
Naithi and Camalayas hold their hidden position for now. They’d like to do more but they think the direct approach might be the best idea so they opt instead to let someone else come up with a better plan.

Grindar’s approach provokes no reaction right up until the point where he has to climb up stage. As soon as he steps onto it the doors lower, revealing them to be two humanoid constructs wielding great shields and shields. The charge the orc and though he damages one they both slam into him, shoving him off the stage and doing 9 damage to him and throwing him 10 feet backwards into the stands. Lothlo’s arrows bounce harmlessly off them (failed to be AC)

Zazu moves forward to try to see what the constructs were guarding and fires off a blinding ray.
From his vantage point the elf cannot see anything but the stage and the arch but he manages to dazzle the creature
Ash sends an acid dart at one of the door wardens.

Niall moves up to help Grindar but stays off the stage.

Lothlo launches another volley of arrows at the warden. His first arrow misses but his second strikes true but doesn’t even manage to scratch the surface of the creature.

Beech looses his knocked arrow and misses either warden so he gets ready to cast a spell next time.

Naithi and Camalayas move up. She asks if they should try a nonviolent solution or rented attacks

Grindar insults the constructs and shatters a javelin uselessly against the shield of the injured warden.

Door Warden the Door Wardens seem intent on Grindar, advancing on him while ignoring the others even as they rain attacks on them. They move to flank and both power attack him with longswords quickly taking the orc down (21 & 22 to hit, 14 damage each for 28 total damage).

They both then turn as if to head back to the stage. Now that they’re out of the way you can see the arch clearly and it just looks like a big stone arch. There is nothing under or between at all. (If you have detect magic up Highlight to display spoiler: {the arch glows with incredibly powerful magic.}

*sigh* These things feel like the weird fungus from earlier. I don't think my arrows are going to be particularly useful, probably would have better luck with something sturdy that could bludgeon them. I

Do you think fire might be useful against them? We did find that wand earlier, perhaps that was intended for more than the fungus.

Then in a much softer voice, "Let me see if I can trick them."

Zazu casts Message cantrips and then a Reduce Person to become halfling-sized. (+4 on stealth, +2 dex) Then the wizard casts a Silent Image of a fog bank, two feet high covering the stage and ten feet out around it, except not coming within 5 ft of the constructs. If they move, the fog moves away from them and fills in behind, so that they never touch it. If they do not physically interact with the illusion, they do not get a save.

If the constructs do not attack the fog, Zazu stealths up to the edge of the fog, crawls up under the total concealment of the fog, and onto the stage, still prone, still crawling through the fog. The rogue crawls onto the stage to start with, and we'll see how it goes.

As Grindar goes down, Cotton comes running to his side and begins licking his wounds. As the multiple healings wash over him, the ranger stands up and thanks those who offered him healing. After hearing Lothlo’s words, he draws his quarterstaff and stands up. Needless to say, the half-orc isn't in a good mood, in fact one might say he's a bit angry.

Niall uses lay upon hands to stabilize Grindar

Zazu helps drag Grindar off the stage making a comment about keeping groupies away from the performer.

Ash uses the CMW wand to patch Grindar up more suggesting coordinated range attacks on the damaged one.
Lothlo suggests the constructs are like the fungus from earlier in their damage resistance and asks if fire might do some damage as they still have that staff from earlier. He then tries to pinpoint the weaknesses for the door warden. His first shot misses but his second shot actually hits and does some damage.
Zazu wishes they didn’t have to destroy the door warden and decides to try to trick them instead. He creates the illusion of a fog back that stays 5 feet away from the door warden, shrinks himself, casts message and then stealthily crawls up on the stage. The door wardens do not seem to notice the shrunken elf.
Grindar sees Cotton lick his wounds and eventually gets enough magical healing energy to be able to stand, drawing his quarterstaff as he does so.
Naithi atop Camalayas attempts to follow after Zazu but although the rabbit was very stealthy when making the jump to the stage the slightest of thuds seemed to happen and the wardens raise their weapons in her direction. (OOC: Door Wardens rolled 27 and 28 on their opposed stealth checks, meaning they are aware of your presence)

The Door wardens, seemingly unconcerned with the rest of the party, start to head back to their starting positions. They don’t seem to notice as Zazu sneaks up on stage. Then Lothlo manages to damage one and both turn to him and advance menacingly.

"Any ideas? these things seem to brush off the majority of our arrow and javelin attacks, Anyone got a sling? That may work better, but I'm not sure." Seeing the constructs mad mugging Lothlo, Grindar attempts to sneak up on the wardens, in hopes of catching them flat-footed, (Stealth 23) and then makes a two handed swing with his quarterstaff, hitting AC 17 for 11 bludgeoning damage. He makes sure to attack the wounded one, in hopes of dropping it.

Zazu continues to try to sneak through the illusionary fog. Surprisingly the 2 door wardens give no sign of seeing the shrunken elf still.

Lothlo sprints away from the constructs, hoping that they have either a set range or are too slow to keep up with him.

Ash says she doubts everyone can be stealthy enough to slip past the door wardens and fires off an acid dart.

Beech draws and shoots but his attack misses.

The constructs split, the damaged one continuing the chase of Lothlo and the other going for Ash. Lothlo finds the room is to small for him to get totally out of their reach, only about 50 by 50 (so a double move from any char can cover it). The construct catches him, but doesn’t have an action to attack with this round.

Ash in turn finds that 20 feet from the stage is less than 30 feet from where the warden was. It rushes her and slashes her for 16 damage.

Zazu finds himself on the stage with the arch. It hums with magic and he can feel a sort of buzzing in his teeth near it. It’s carved top to bottom with strange symbols, not really a language more like decoration, and there’s a slot for something to be inserted. Whatever it is, it doesn’t seem to be active.

Once again Ash loses blood. It's been a rough few days. She's starting to miss those times back in the orc slave camp where all her blood stayed inside her.

Zazu attempts to “pick the lock” on the arches with his thieves tools while concentrating on the illusionary fog,
Lothlo provokes an AOO from the Warden in trying to acrobatically move away.

Naithi suggests they try the staff in the keyhole

The slot in the door is not at all keyhole shaped. More like a diamond shape. The staff definitely wouldn’t fit. Still he gives it a try with his tools anyway.

The grappled door warden breaks the grapple and both seem to be instantly alerted somehow to Zazu’s meddling, for they both ignore the rest of the party to charge the stage. Said meddling activates something and a blast of energy is thrown out as the wardens get onto the stage. Zazu is hurled up and out over halfway across the room, slamming into the steps (taking 10 falling damage)

Both constructs withstand the blast and are still on stage as a rift forms in the arch. It sucks everything on the stage towards the rift. Both wardens resist for a moment, one stabbing it’s large sword into the ground to hold onto, but it’s pull is inexorable and both are sucked into the rift and vanish.

Then, just as quickly as it appeared, the rift dissipates.

Grindar lets out a sigh of relief as the healing washes over him. The ranger and Rapke companion then make a Beeline for the open door, keeping eyes open while they do so.
Lothlo also thanks Ash for the healing and asks what the thing was that sucked up the wardens was and if they broke it or was it supposed to do that. He also wonders if they should head down the open hall.
Niall also is thankful for the healing and moves towards the reopened exit to peer through
Zazu bows to Ash thanking her for the intervention. He then asks for a moment to observe the arch on the stage w/ detect magic.
Ash holsters her wand and agrees that it might be worth examining the arch again before they leave. She joins Zazu in checking it out magically

The party moves into a new room. Again the music plays and the hallways are filled in. A new one is built heading north. This room seems like a natural stone cave, much like the first room, but there’s a fast flowing river, about 20 feet across, that cuts the room in half. To reach the exit you’re going to have to find some way across without being swept away by it.

I wouldn't be to quick to jump in that water, who knows if anything is living in it. Or whether this particular water may turn you into some random creature. We should at least try to make sure it's safe before trying anything.

Lothlo scans the room for any signs of a trap or hidden enemies. He also looks for something that a rope could be tied to or a possible way around the room such as a way to climb across on the walls.

Beech opines that the party wants to continue moving east so they need to get across the river and see if a new opening appears. He looks for a point on the far side where one might anchor a lasso.
Ash suggests using a jump spell with a head start or alter self to turn into something good at swimming. She too looks for something to tie a rope to on the far side.
Niall suggests the jump or swim plan is a good idea even if it meant using a rope to pull the rest over a few times.
Grindar suggests they try to focus on figuring out a way to get him to the otherside and with his superior strength he could get the rest over one at a time.
Lothlo urges caution with respect to the water after their experiences thus far and suggests making sure it is safe before trying anything.
Zazu suggests they tie a rope on their best swimmer let them dive for the left-most side and if they make it great and if not the rest of the party could reel them in and they could try again.
Naithi offers some rope and her own strength but points out she could offer magical assistance with a rest. She brings up the idea of having Grindar toss her across as she is compact but strong.
Ash thinks about putting her hand in the water.
Grindar thinks tossing Naithi should be easy if she’s as light as she says (See e-mail about Naithi weight)

Looking toward the other side there appear to be a few promising places where a rope could potentially be anchored. There is a rocky outcropping on the far sure one could attempt to lasso if one was skilled enough in such endeavors. The east wall is on the other side so you will have to cross to keep going.

Lothlo notices a long brownish black thing with a tail moving in the water.
Uh, guys, I think something is moving in that water. Maybe 30 feet down... lots of legs, looks a little like Bugo. I'm guessing it has the same giant appetite as well, we may want to avoid attracting it's attention if possible.

Lothlo keeps back from the water, not being sure what the creature's reach may be.
He keeps his bow drawn, but will only fire if it looks like the creature is about to attack him, no sense provoking a fight if the creature isn't threatening them

Ash stretches her neck a little "Well. We're going to have to get across sooner or later. I'll swim to the other side and see if it moves. If I get in trouble I'll swim back here." Ash takes out a rope and ties it around her waist. She hands the other end of it to the group.

She then casts Alter Self to take on the form of a boggard. It's not the greatest look for her. A frog head and lots of warts and bumps? Ugh. Still, duty calls. "Don't mind the appearance. They're real good at swimming! With darkvision I might be able to see what's down there too."

Standing upstream and at the edge of the river, Ash dives in and promptly tries to swim across to the other side without delay.

As Ash turns herself into a boggard, Grindar thinks to himself, "A merfolk, or maybe a gillman, would be more comely, but to each their own." He readies a javelin to hurl, if anything attacks Ash, hitting AC 12 for 9 damage.

Beech pulls out a rope, makes a loop and tries to lasso the outcropping on the other side of the water. He is successful.
Niall watches and keeps an eye out.
Lothlo notices something in the water that kind of looks like Bugo. He brings it to the attention of his companions then draws his bow and readies an attack in case the creature tries to attack him.
Naithi comes to the realization that they measure weight differently here than where she was from.
Ash casts Alter Self to turn into a boggard reasoning that the party is going to have to get across sooner or later. She says if she gets in trouble she’ll swim back and she ties a rope around herself and gives the other end to the group. She dives in and swims quickly to the other side, looking down at the shapes as she does so. She see what appears to be a giant beetle with a cylindrical, hydrodynamic body that tapers into a pointed tail section. While its wing covers and carapace are a brownish-black, its legs are a dull yellow and a silver stripe runs along its dorsal side.
Grindar thinks about other aquatic options that Ash could have gone for.

The insects react violently to Ash’s presence, reading their antenna menacingly and swimming rapidly towards her, but she’s across before they reach her. She gets the feeling whoever goes next won’t be so lucky. Sense motive or handle animal 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { such a swift, violent reaction from animals usually only comes when defending a nest or young.}

Ash takes a couple of steps back from the edge, unsure if these watery bugs will try and jump out and follow her. Fortunately boggards can still walk around on land, rather than hobble around like a merfolk. Merfolk. They certainly are beautiful, especially compared to boggards! Maybe next time.

"There's some sort of giant beetle down there!" she calls to the others "It's fast and looks aggressive.."

Ash takes the rope from her waist and ties it tightly onto one of the rock outcrops. She ties more knots than she thinks necessary, but when it's her friends lives it's best to be careful. She also makes sure the one Beech tossed is quite secure.

She tries to think of ways the others could cross. Two ropes are certainly better than one and the party might be able to use one to stand on and the other to balance with. What if the bugs pop up though? "Are you able to make an illusion below the waterline, Zazu? Make it look like normal water while everyone uses the ropes to cross?"

If you can make the illusion look like the ceiling above that would be best, though if the notice they may get hostile. Looks like they are already on edge, try to do anything to provoke them until we have a plan. Besides trying to offer them food I don't have many ideas... hopefully the don't think we look tastier.

Wild empathy check = 19 and 21 to calm them so we can cross safely. (I subtracted 4 because I thought I used a handle animal check and discovered wild empathy was d20+druid lvl+char+Maab's bonus)

(I don't have a good method for bringing these guys back, but it would be cool if we could train them to guard and patrol the river)

Zazu claps at the good job Ash does and asks if holding the rope out of the water would let those who are light to cross. He also asks if anyone has some means to anchor the end of the rope on their side.
Ash takes a couples steps back from the edge of the water. She then calls over to her friends about the water beetles before making sure the ropes are secure. She queries Zazu about illusionary options.
Zazu explains what he can do and asks if anyone knows how the bug sees.
Grindar tries to help Zazu identify the bugs abilities
Beech suggests rope guides aren’t going to work on his large tauric form. He tries to gauge how wide the narrowest point is.
Lothlo suggests Zazu make an illusion look like the ceiling above and that no one provoke them till they have a plan. He continues to ready a shot should they attack him
Niall suggests they try to distract them.
Naithi tosses some food in the water and attempts to communicate friendly non-hostile intent.
Grindar suggests a rope bridge.
Lothlo worries Naithi may have drawn hostile attention.


Zazu and Grindar Highlight to display spoiler: {You know that these things are immune to mind effecting things and that they have a sort of water sense that functions like blind sense except in water}

The gulf separating one side from the other is almost uniform in its distance. Aside from the rocky outcropping which is slightly closer, but the outcropping itself would make it a potential dangerous proposition for jumping.

"I've got an idea" Ash puts forward a thought "We found that rope of climbing outside, right? We command it to affix itself high on your side and low on this side. You can then either use it to slide down this way, or just overhand climb it. We could even have it knot itself to make the climb easier. It'll support 3000lbs so that would cover you right Beech?"

"That magic rope thing may just do the trick!" Grindar says, then adds, "That may come in handy in the future. As far as the bugs are concerned, they have a sort of blind sense that only works underwater, so if we stay out of the water, we should be fine, Oh and they are immune to mind effects, for you caster types."

Lothlo suggests that if they don’t like Naithi’s food there isn’t much they can’t do to keep the water beetles in getting upset when crossing and that they may need to resign themselves to fighting.
Beech sees that the distance between the side they are on and the one Ash is on is about 20 feet
Ash suggests they use the rope of climbing to cross by instructing one end of the rope to affix itself high on the side everyone else is on and low on the side she is on. She then says people could just slide down or they could have knot itself for overhand climbing. She reasons that since the rope can support 3000 pounds it could support the weight of a Wemic.
Grindar likes Ash’s rope idea and then tells the others what he and Zazu have learned.
Lothlo theorizes that if they can avoid the water the beetles might leave them alone.
Beech notes that with the magical rope they don’t even have to slide across and that using a command word you could have it attach to someone and shorten and then all one has to do is swing or be pulled to the otherside while being above the water.

The party is able to find some nice stalagmites to attach the rope to. Sadly they can’t find a good way to angle it so they can just slide down it - the stalagmites are too thin up high and to thick down low to tie it like Ash hoped. The knotted rope still looks like a fairly easy climb though(climb DC 5)

Beech commands the rope of climbing to attach to the ceiling on the other side of the water, then attaches it himself, he then tells it to shorten. It should pull him upwards as the magic takes effect. once he stops swinging like a pendulum he'll have the rope lengthen and lower himself to the floor.
Then he'll have it release both ends and get ready to throw it back across so it can be repeated.

If Beech is able to make the rope of climbing work, He will take his turn to do likewise. If not, he will use the rope of climbing to make the climb, after removing his armor and strapping it to his backpack, so as to not be hindered in the climb. (climb check 16) Once on the other side, he re-dons his armor.

Beach goes first across the water, attempting to swing across from a stalactite. The rope proves plenty sturdy enough for him to hold onto without risk of breaking. The stalactite proves less sturdy, snapping off and sending the heavy liontaur splashing into the water. The beetles immediately charge him, one only getting armor with it’s bite but the other managing to do 6 damage (is your AC 14 or 18? Confusing header)

The broken stalactite falls on the shore, rope still attached.

Since the stalactite failed before he went, I assume Grindar is still on the wrong side of the water, as such he wouldn't have removed his armor yet.)

Grindar watches in horror as Beech hits the water, and is attacked by the beetles. Thinking fast, the ranger draws a javelin and hurls it at the closest bug, hitting AC 8, most likely a miss, but on the off chance that it hits, it does 11 damage.

Well this isn't going to plan! Ash dives in to lend a hand to Niall. The alter self spell has given her some strength, but even so she doesn't think she'll be able to drag Beech to safety. She tries to keep Niall's head above water and drag him along with her.

Dive into the water and grab Niall. Ash has a 30ft swim speed (can Take10 on checks) and with Alter Self has a 10 Str which would allow her to drag 500lbs on land.

As people start to panic and dive into the water I walk over to the route is climbing and place a hand on it. I then command it to start towing the others towards shore. Grab onto the rope. We will pull you back to shore.

The rope should pull everyone 10 feet towards it onto shore, and I will then pull it further in by hand to get everyone on dry land. The rope should ahead be knotted.

If it is not too complicated a command, I will also command it to wrap around the have or waist of anyone in our party not holding onto it that needs to be pulled out.

Beech swims for the far shore or attempts to but is having serious difficulties. He starts to sink into the water
Niall jumps in trying to help Beech but things aren’t going well. He also starts to sink in his heavy armor.
Grindar watches in horror as Beech hits the water and throws a javelin at the nearest beetle. The javelin misses.
Lothlo takes aim at one of the bugs and hits with both arrows.
Ash dives in and lends a hand to Niall. With her strength and swim speed she’s able to drag him back to the surface of the water.
Naithi is able to take a 5 foot step to get to the rope, she then uses a move action to grab it and a standard action to activate it, having it wrap around Beech as he struggles in the water.

Ash seems to have Nial safely in hand and the rope is around Beech so things look less bad now. The bugs his in pain at the attacks from shore and dive, squirting black ink over the area to blind the archers. With the river’s flow it’ll probably clear in a few rounds but until then everyone under the surface of the water is concealed to those on shore. Ash and Nial get covered in the oily substance from the waist down.

10 feet below the water Beech suddenly sees everything grow black. The nasty, oily substance gets all over his fur and clothing. He feels tugs on his armor, indicating the creatures are still trying to bite him through it, though they fail to penetrate.

Lothlo looks at the obscured water and wonders whether the bugs are escaping or preparing an attack.
Well, if they want to leave he's not about to stop them, but just in case he makes sure he moves slightly to make sure he's not in the same spot as before, and prepares another volley of arrows should they come back, targeting the one he hit before is possible.

Bog-Ash instructs Niall to just kick his legs and she can get him back to her side of the river as she continues to help
Niall makes it towards the other side of the river with Ash’s help
Beech is still thrashing in the water, at least he has the rope of climbing wrapped around him.
Lothlo isn’t sure what the bugs are up to so he moves a little and readies another volley of arrows in case they present themselves again.
Zazu rushes to help Naithi pull in Beech
Naithi is momentarily uncertain if the rope successfully snagged Beech but then it goes taunt and the stone slides a bit indicating the heavy taur is on the other end.

Between Naithi and Zazu they’re more than strong enough to haul the taur through the water. They manage to get him back to the surface and towards the shore in seconds. The Bugs finally manage to find a weak point and chew on him a little for 13 total damage. They don’t leave the cloud and soon Beech is being dragged to shore and out of danger.

Thankful that his new friend is safe on shore, Grindar lets out a sigh of relief, then says, "Now what? do we try the magic rope again, this time making sure it attaches itself to the ceiling, and not a stalactite, or do we try something else?

That sounds like a good plan. May want to wait until that black stuff clears before trying anything. I'm keeping my bow ready just in case they aren't satisfied staying int he water.

"I'll read my Rope Trick scroll. I'll set the entrance to the Trick near the ceiling, and near the water. After the spell is cast, we lengthen the rope as needed by just tying a length onto it."

"Everyone on this side climbs up into the Trick. We toss the rope to the other side. Folks over there hold tight. Maybe secure the rope as best they can. Then we zip line over from the Trick."

"How's that?"

Grindar lets out a sigh of relief that his friends are safe on sure and asks what their next play is. He suggests making sure the rope attaches to the ceiling and not a slactite.
Lothlo thinks Grindar’s plan is good and suggests they further wait for the murk to clear before attempting. He keeps his bow readied.
Ash suggests they try to also use the zip line option instead of the swing in case the ceiling can't bear the weight.
Zazu suggests sacrificing his rope trick scroll he was going to scribe into his spell book in order to ensure the group gets across safely.
Beech is off the opinion that they save the scroll and they get the rope attached to the roof this time directly.

The party debates. The oily cloud dissipates quickly while they do, the swift flowing river washing it downstream in less than a minute.

An examination of the ceiling reveals that it’s fairly rough with stalactites hanging from it here and there. There is talk of tying the rope directly to the ceiling but there has to be some sort of protrusion to tie the rope around. A nice thick stalactite seems like the only real option for tying. You could maybe attach a grappling hook to it, which would still probably end up attached to a stalactite. If you could somehow reach the ceiling you could stick a piton in it and attach directly to the ceiling that way, but it seems doubtful that would be any more secure than a stalactite. You’ll have to find some way to lessen the weight on the stone, find something you can tie it to that will hold the weight, or find some other work around.

Though the liontaur is to heavy it seems unlikely anyone else in the party would have the same problems from just attaching the rope and climbing/swinging across

FYI As Per the description: A 60-foot-long rope of climbing is no thicker than a wand, but it is strong enough to support 3,000 pounds. Upon command, the rope snakes forward, upward, downward, or in any other direction at 10 feet per round, attaching itself securely wherever its owner desires. It can unfasten itself and return in the same manner.
The Rope magically attaches, it does not tie to anything.


Again, Beech suggests using the magic of the rope by having it attach to the ceiling.

"Ok, here's the plan. We create the zip line and everyone except for Beech makes it across. Beech, you then make a running jump. With your speed I think you can make it. If need be you could even carry Cotton."

Highlight to display spoiler: {Everyone else is light enough for the rope. The DC for a 20ft long jump is 20. Beech has +6 on his acrobatics check and gets another +8 for a 50ft base speed. If he takes 10 on his jump he hits DC24 and passes}

Zazu is on board with the zip line plan, but if we need a sounder anchor, something that even a large fellow can zip down, then the wizard enhances the plan with his Rope Trick!

Lothlo looks around to make sure the bugs aren't about to attack, and hopes that they just left in the ink cloud. He then tries to determine whether there might be a more suitable anchor for the rope.

Grindar nods his head in agreement with Ash's idea. He is more than a bit concerned as to how Cotton is going to cross, but then he realizes, that if she takes her time, she shouldn't have any problem jumping across. (+8 for 50 ft speed, +2 for dex, and taking 10 means auto pass) Grindar casts speak with animals, and explains to his companion his plan, and after the explanation, the rapke easily jumps across. Grindar takes up the rope of climbing, and instructs it to reattach itself to the ceiling, then he swings across to join Cotton on the other side. once on the other side, he swings the rope back to the other side.

Grindar is open to any option
Niall empties his boots of water.
Ash suggests a plan involving a zipline and Beech just jumping.
Zazu has an idea using magic.
Lothlo examines the room to find a better place to anchor the rope.
Grindar is concerned how Cotton will make it over until he realizes it’s an easy jump.

Lothlo and Beech are able to find a good place to secure the rope and the party is able to cross with no further troubles. They wait a few minutes for the hallway to rotate and advance to the next room

The next room is another room full of statues much like the one you saw before. Or at least it was. Something large and strong objected to the statue’s existence it seems, for they are shattered and broken across the ground. Deep claw marks, like they saw outside the dungeon, run through the stone.

There is only one exit, a hallway made of some strange metal you’ve never seen before.

If the thing that made that is waiting for us, then I think healing is a good idea. I'm not sure how strong that thing is, but I'm pretty sure my skin isn't as strong as the rock that has those deep gashes in it. We probably don't want to take that thing on unprepared.

Ash breaks out the bandaid wand and treats Beech's wounds - including some he might not have realised he took!

She shakes her head at Grindar's imaginary wounds. "You look fine to me friend"

Ash waits patiently for someone else to walk bravely through this room. She tries to think whether the metal on the other side looks familiar to her in some way.

I eat a good berry and heal up. How is everyone doing magic wise? I have a little left, but Camalayas and I will be mainly melee at this point.

Seeing the strange metal I try to grab enough to make armor and weapons for myself, Fizzgig, Cuddly mule and a large sized Camalayas.

I would also like to grab some statuary pieces for decorating my room, but will wait to see if the come to life and attack us first.

Beech asks for some healing before proceeding.
Grindar also asks for some healing before trying to identify the source of the clawmarks. He isn’t really sure with respect to aberrations or oozes but he is fairly certain that whatever the claws belong to it is not any animal, fey, monstrous humanoid, plant or vermin he’s ever heard of.
Lothlo agrees that if whatever made the claw marks is waiting for them then it is best to heal up before confronting it.
Zazu keeps watch while healing is administered. He does not find any threats.
Ash heals Beech and reminds Grindar that he was previously healed. She waits for someone else to take point and tries to identify the metal on the other side but it is like nothing she’s ever seen before, sort of alien in nature at least when it comes to the types of metal and alloys she is familiar with. She think it might be an alloy but she can’t say for certain what its composition is.
Niall requests healing as well. Volunteering to take point if his wounds are treated.
Naithi wants to collect some things but the metal is solid, with no way to pry it up from the walls or floor. The statue pieces are easy enough to collect, though finding a bit intact enough to be worth gathering takes a minute.

Grindar listens to Ash's words and then looks at his body in amazement. "I must be losing my mind! How could I forget I was healed? It just goes to show that these underground places can mess with your mind. By the way, I've seen a lot of tracks, it's kinda one of my specialties, but what ever made those claw marks is something completely beyond my knowledge."

I think it is a horse a piece. Resting will bring us to full strength, but we risk getting attached in the meantime. However, a few traps might might prevent an ambush and give us the advantage.

Ash gives Niall a poke with the cure wand. That should mean almost everyone is at full health

She still has quite a few spells left for the day and is happy to press on.
