DM Mitch Wednesday March 17th, 2021 6:25:52 AM Grindar thinks he might be losing his mind with respect to forgetting Ash previously healed him before informing the others he doesn’t know what made the claw marks. Beech is ready to proceed and he nocks an arrow Niall plows ahead leading the way. Lothlo asks if the magical folk need a rest before continuing Naithi suggests that if they rest it will make them at full strength but they run the risk of potential ambush. She asks Zazu about setting traps. Zazu upon hearing the word traps resolves to go first with Niall while keeping an eye out for traps. Ash uses the cure wand on Niall.
The debate for resting seems to be settled against it, as most of the party indicates their preparedness for moving on. Zazu sees no traps, though he sees a small sigil embossed at the top of the strange metal hallway. Linguistics DC 25 or Know(History) DC20 to translate the symbol The party advances cautiously through the hallway and manage to make it to the other side without any difficulty whatsoever. As they emerge it quickly becomes clear that they’ve somehow ended up in the same room they just left though. The same busted statues, the same claw marks, the same plain stone walls.

DM Mitch Thursday March 18th, 2021 8:15:34 AM Zazu suggests that they are supposed to walk backwards and asks if anybody knows what the sigil means. Grindar remarks that he has no clue and that he never thought he’d end up in a magical underground labyrinth with traps, puzzles and other nonsense. He hopes the magic lyre is worth it. Ash is able to interpret the sigil as meaning ‘confusion’ and agrees with Zazu they try backwards. Lothlo agrees they can try walking backwards and worst case scenario they look and feel a little silly. Beech will be in the front which is actually the rear if they go backwards with his bow at the ready. Naithi thinks this will be interesting and has to coax her animals into doing the same thing as the rest of the party.
The party slowly and carefully advance into and through the hall with their backs turned. WIth some good coordination no one runs into anyone else, but they can’t see if it’s working until the person in the lead trips on some rubble from the room they just left. It seems walking backwards isn’t the answer.

Before the group start walking, Ash tries a couple of things. She casts a dancing lights spell and sends it up to 130ft down the passage ahead, curious to see if it comes out behind her.
She then tries sending the lights halfway down the passage and then directing them to come back to her again, effectively testing what the party are about to try. Since the party have already made the trip once she thinks she's able to determine the midpoint.
Finally she tries sending the lights back the way the party came - keeping an eye on them the whole time - just to see what happens.
If she doesn't get any clues from any of that she'll follow along with the party, using the glowing hand-glove to make marks on the metal floor every 5ft as they go and keeping count of them.

DM Mitch 10d4=35 ; Friday March 19th, 2021 7:46:54 AM Beech suggests they walk halfway, turn around and walk back Grindar is game for anything at this point. He readies his axe and searches around for more clues to this puzzle. Nial goes along with whatever plan the group comes up with. Ash decides to try a couple of things. She sends the dancing lights down the hall only to see it disappear at the end of the hall and emerge among the party. She recreates what the party is about to attempt and considers sending them through the hallway they entered the room from originally but it was unbuilt when they entered and they’d have to wait for it to come back. (OOC: which version of the dancing lights spell did you cast? The one where the lights resemble will-o-wisps or the one where it is a single vaguely humanoid shape?)
She creates a glowing hand print on the point of the floor where the party currently stands and then puts one every five feet as they try the next thing. Lothlo takes minute to examine the room to see if there are any clues about how the trick works or any devices that may disable it. Lothlo and Grindar don’t really find anything further besides the glyph Zazu brought to everyone’s attention previously. Zazu tries destroying the glyph. Though the strange metal is highly resistant to damage he’s able to render the word ineligible. It doesn’t see to do anything though.
Ash’s second experiment seems to produce the results you want. The lights are visible halfway down the hallway, but when it seems like they should leave the hallway in front of the group they instead vanish, presumably appearing in the room on the other side.
With that seeming proof of what they should be doing the party is able to proceed. As they walk down the hallway thin wisps of fog start to drift lazily in their lights. By the time they find themselves in a new room it has grown into a thick cloud, totally blinding them (others within 5 feet have partial concealment, anything past that has total concealment)
A deep voice speaking in a low growl echoes through the chamber. ”So you’ve returned at last. This time I’ll take more then two of you with me.”
There’s the sound of a deep breath, then Niall, Grindar, and Cotton are hit by a blast of freezing cold that burrows deep into their bones. They take 17 cold damage, Reflex save DC 19 for half.

We don’t want to have to kill you.” Niall detects evil in the direction of the blast and gets hit with cold. He asks if anyone can see anything. Beech attempts to burn away the fog using burning hands, stowing his bow while he does so. Ash can’t see where she is and is pretty sure no one can. She casts resist energy (cold) on herself and waits to hear any response to Naithi. Lothlo throws an alchemist fire in the direction of the assailant. Grindar sees Cotton go down and then charges off in the direction of the voice attempting to attack it.
Neither Beech’s fire nor Lothlo’s alchemist fire affect the fog or find a mark on the enemy. Grindar’s charge brings him out of the fog and he finds it only extends about 20 feet forward into the room and 40 feet across.
As he charges out he can see their assailant. A large dragon of the purist white curled defensively about 40 feed from the entrace. It looks like it’s been in a really, really bad fight lately. Nothing's bleeding, but it’s missing teeth, one of it’s wings is crumpled, and half healed wounds crisscross it’s body. He charges right into it’s reach and it snaps at him with it’s jaws (dealing ten damage). Grindar’s counterblow skids off it’s icy hide before it’s claws send him to oblivion (two claw attacks for 14 damage, putting you at -7)
The dragon roars at the rest of the party. ”Again you speak peace while plotting my demise. Again you send your pathetic hirelings to fall before me. Come out so that we might meet Gargul together cowards!”

He entreats the dragon that they are not its enemy. Grindar goes down explaining the dragon was the one attacked first on his way out (you need to make stabilization checks for yourself and cotton please) Beech tries to keep the dragon’s attention away from Grindar as he expounds on what Zazu was saying explaining a bit about his heritage and why the party has come. Niall kneels with his sword point down trying to assure the dragon they have not fought before. Lothlo emerges, lowering his bow and not holding arrows. He asks the dragon to tell if he recognizes anyone among them. He also asks if someone is plotting the dragon’s demise he’d like to know and why so he can make sure they weren’t tricked into coming there. He offers a healing potion. Ash casts a spectral hand and takes a few steps forward to see what is going on. She realizes the white dragon is immune to cold paralysis and sleep and has spell resistance while being vulnerable to fire.
The dragon looks wildly at the party as they emerge from the mist one by one. With a word he sends a gust of wind howling through the room, ruffling clothes and banishing the mist. When he sees that no one is hiding in it he maybe relaxes a twinge. Maybe.

I am a druid and follower of Maab, Our Lady the Silver Dragon. We mean you no harm. As a sign of faith, I have a CLW potion that can help heal you, and I'm sure you could use something to eat. In addition to the usual rations I have also prepared some with a variety of wild meat found in the forest.

DM Mitch d20+14=22 ; Wednesday March 24th, 2021 7:06:39 AM Beech puts down his bow on the floor and offers to help examine the dragon’s injuries. The extent of the wounds are beyond him though. Ash is confident someone else can treat Grindar and informs the dragon she is casting a healing spell with her spectral hand. Grindar thinks he hears the party negotiate with dragon and hopes they don’t suffer his fate Zazu continues to reassure the dragon while pouring a cure potion down Grindar’s throat. Niall takes a non-aggressive position and watches wearily. Lothlo gives the dragon its space. Reiterating that none in the party were among those that attacked it and his offer for a potion and interest in the dragon’s story. Naithi talks of being a druid and follower of Ma’ab. She offers a cure light wounds potion and some food as a sign of good faith.
The dragon tenses and looks ready to lash out as Ash sends her spectral hand over. It watches her casting closely and is seemingly able to confirm it’s a harmless healing spell. The spell makes it look better, though not certainly not all better and it quickly backs away from the spectral hand after the casting. This does put it far enough away from Grindar that Zazu is able to administer the healing potion without crowding the dragon and risking further misunderstanding.
The dragon speaks, no longer roaring but it’s voice still a deep rumble you can almost feel in your bones. ”I surmise from the look of you that you came for the instrument then? It is just past here, though the hall seals itself when I approach. As to my story well I’ll tell you but I’d appreciate the food and potions you offered first. I need to speed my recovery but I’m more than willing to sing for my supper as it were”
He seems calm enough to have a somewhat civil now, though obviously still very wary of letting you cast spells directly on him but open to at least accepting indirect castings through premade potions.

Though magically stabilized, and healed a bit, by Zazu's potion, Grindar is still unconscious. Though he can't interact with his friends, or the dragon for that matter, he hears that things are going well, and wonders, like his friends, what caused the dragon's current state, as well as it's name.

Seeing him get healed she then looks back to the dragon "You see. This is a cure wand. If you'll allow me to approach you I could use it to heal your wounds further. Would that be ok?"

Beech stows his bow and drags Grindar a few feet from the dragon. Lothlo hands the potion over to the dragon Zazu helps drag Grindar away from the dragon Ash confirms they are there for the instrument and asks if that is why the dragon is there too. She then uses the wand on Grindar and offers to use it on the dragon. She also introduces herself and asks the dragon its name.
The dragon says, “My name is Nydryt. I did not come hear for the instrument, I just came to realize something was different about it when its melody caused the dungeon to change.” The dragon proceeds to tuck into Naithi’s offerings of food and water and the 2 potions which after drinking the dragon looks better than it had before.
Nydryt says, “I do not know who is behind the attempts on my life, I suspect it has something to do with the yearning I felt to come to this thrice accursed. It is hard to explain but I felt drawn to this area as if there was a reason I needed to be here, a deeper reason, almost instinctual. I don’t know what it was but I could not ignore it, though in retrospect, I wish I somehow had found the strength needed to resist the lure. Despite how I felt, there is no good reason for me to be here. Shortly after arriving I was ambushed by the group I fought, some of whom whose remains you found on the surface, presumably. After I killed one of their hirelings the rest fled, only for more to come offering aid to make me lower my guard. Only luck had let me find this place and lose them in the maze. When I heard the hall shift and you lot coming I thought they had found me again and that my luck had finally run out. I was wrong on both counts. Tell me, do you think a temple of Warrd would accept an offering made by a white dragon? Perhaps I owe him something for helping me to survive this ordeal.”

With Ash's wand usage, Grindar finally comes around. He sits up and looks around, grumbling to himself "Where's the team of oxen that trampled me?"
He looks over at the parties new guest, and says, "I understand your story and believe your plight Nydryt, but you have one heck of a way of saying hello. I mean if your icy breath hadn't dropped Cotton, my rapke companion, I would have been all in favor of diplomacy first. Of course my charge wasn't very effective, and perhaps a bit ill fated, but still."
He looks towards his new friends and says, "Thanks for the life juice, I hope I didn't bleed all over anyone. By the way, has anyone giving Cotton a dose of the good stuff?"

Ash grins slightly as she considers the possibility of a dragon in human form residing in the town with them. It could be a powerful ally. Then again, it could just as easily turn on the town and eat half of the population. Best not to rush into that just yet...
She pokes Cotton with the wand to bring the rapke round to consciousness again. The party might need to invest in another wand for someone else to use.
"Wardd is certainly known for bringing a bit of luck when it is needed. Perhaps he planned for us to meet like this? That we happened here to help you, and you here to help us in some way - now or in the future."
"Are you starting to feel better? Are you able to escape this place?"
Ash also looks about to see if she can see any of the dragon's missing teeth are about, or even a scale or two. They would be quite a memento of this meeting.

He points out that Nydryt has a heck of saying hello and asks if anyone has seen to Cotton yet. Zazu is confused by Nydryt’s attempt at humor and points out that while many noble races fear dragons they also respect and honor them. He suggests though the temple would probably take things better if Nydryt used a humanoid disguise. Ash considers the possibility of a dragon living in disguise among them, thinks the party should invest in another wand potentially and suggests perhaps Warrd has setup their fortuitous meeting.
Beech explains he doesn’t have the ability to heal yet.
Lothlo says he is glad Nydryt is feeling better and asks if he will be able to navigate the maze. Naithi suggests there is something that could be in the Culverwood that draws dragon’s there. She asks if there could be a way for him to contact them should he need their help again.
Nydryt says ”My apologies. I was being hunted and my only chance for survival was to get the drop on the pursuers. Leaving was never a problem, I think I figured out the maze, the problem was what awaited me outside. I am feeling better now and will flee this entire area as soon as possible. Somewhere isolated and cold.”
”As to your other questions, let me give you 6 of my scales as a token of friendship, perhaps they may help you contact me again should you have a need. As for myself, if I need to find you again in the future is there a location I may be able to reach you. Dragons can range far and wide so hopefully someplace that is not in this wood.”

Turning to Nydryt, Grindar says, "I'm new to the Culverwood, only been here a few hours actually, but I've been told that if you respect the forest, and make sure to let it know of your respectful nature, the forest can be less of a bane, and sometimes even a boon. Unless I'm mistaken, my friends have chosen to make the Culverwood their home, and I feel obliged, and honored, to join them. Just because the former dragon that chose to dwell in the Culverwood was of an evil bent, doesn't mean you have to follow in it's foot steps. Unless I'm mistaken, one such as yourself would be a powerful asset to the fledgling community that my friends have been trying to build, and though I'm a new comer, hopefully I'm not out of bounds in offering you a home among us."

Yeah, there's still something about inviting a white dragon home that feels a little dangerous. It would be nice to have Nydryt as an ally, but some trust would need to be developed in a situation where Nydryt wasn't just using them for help. You can't judge a dragon by it's color though.
She graciously accepts the scale as a gift, though still keeps her eyes open for one of the dragon's missing teeth.

I thank the dragon and explain that we are outside the Deep Culverwood and give the location relative to Parnoth's Hill and the Lygn River. Since Parnoth's rule the trees haven't grown as thick there, so you should be able to reach us. Still, part of my wonders if what drew Parnoth to the Culverwood also is drawing you.

Beech explains that they are settling at the edge of the woods and that they have come for the instrument to aid construction of their home. He suggests they could use the instrument to construct something for Nydryt to stay in if he ever came to visit. Zazu accepts the scale with a look of wonder and thinks about using it to create an amulet of natural armor Lothlo says they’ll let the townsfolk know a dragon may show up one day if Nydryt wants to come for a visit. Ash is uncertain about having Nydryt live with them and thinks trust would need to be developed. She accepts the scale and continues to look for teeth. Ash does not find any teeth, but she remembers that the fight between Nydryt and his ambushers happened on the surface and perhaps there are dragon teeth there if anywhere. Niall Thanks the dragon for the gift. Naithi wonders if whatever is drawing Nydryt also drew Parnoth.
Nydryt gives a short, sharp laugh at Grindar’s offer. ”Ha! Me live here? I was barely in the area an hour before I was tracked down and nearly killed. Their hirelings, whom I barely managed to kill two of, were stronger than you. The leaders far, far stronger.. I am not so foolish as to assume I will not be found again, nor so cruel as to bring such enemies down upon your home. I made my offer thinking you were merely questing in these accursed woods. I’m not coming within 100 miles of the place for the next century if I can help it.”
He stands and stretches. He’s looking a lot better, most of his wounds magically healed. ”Enough chatter. It is time for me to leave. Good luck mortals. Try not to draw the attention of those who came for me. It’ll be the death of you.”
With those parting words he heads into the strange hallway you came from. Another hallway heads west and presumably to your final goal.

Beech stows the scale and asks the others if they are feeling up to continue exploring, readying his bow. Ash waits for the dragon to leave then asks Niall to detect evil. After that she positions herself in the rear of the group Lothlo agrees that they should find the instrument and head out lest they run into the hirelings Zazu waves farewell and is interested in what Niall detects before agreeing about pushing onward. Naithi says her own goodbyes and waits for the results of Niall’s divination.
There is no aura lingering that Niall can detect, With nothing left to do here they proceed into the next room. A natural stone tunnel, like those found all over the dungeon, leads them a short way west before changing into a large chamber of the same strange metal in that confusing hallway you had to turn around in. You hear music as you approach, low and melodic, and gold glints in your lights before you fully enter it revealing a treasure room. Piles of treasure lay around a central plynth upon which sits a metallic woman, some sort of construct.
She is softly playing a harp or lyre. On seeing the party, she raises it and it turns into a horn of some sort. Her music crescendos and echoes through the cavern. The ghostly mist passes you, heading out to change the dungeon layout no doubt. After several seconds she lowers the instrument, no longer playing, and looks at the group with interest.

Beech takes a diplomatic tact with the construct stashing his bow before inquiring about the construct and instrument. Niall detects evil on the construct Ash introduces herself and compliments the maze. She then uses the wand on Grindar some more while trying to identify the construct. Lothlo bows and says they come in peace. He also makes inquiries into the dragon and if the music had an alluring effect on him. Zazu listens and enjoys the music thinking on how Náro would have enjoyed it. He claps and bows after the performance. Naithi takes a knee, bows her head and hums along to the music.
The construct is alien to Ash. She has never heard of one like it in fact if she had to guess it was likely made of the same foreign alloy the walls in the strange hallway were made of.
The construct speaks in a melodious voice similar to that of the instrument it plays. ”i have no name. I merely care for this vault and the maze until someone returns for it. Someone is here, so my duty is done. The maze protects the vault from the unworthy. I had nothing to do with the dragon taking up residence here. I did not summon it nor do I know why it is attracted to the area. These treasurers are not meant for one such as it.” Done playing, it sets aside the instrument and continues to just look at the party with calm indifference.

Niall is equally dubious, wondering what the construct does after the treasure is gone. Zazu says they’d really like the instrument and offers to take the construct back home with them.
”I create the maze. The maze keeps out the unworthy. You made it through. The contents of this vault are now yours, including the instrument. Take it and I shall seal the vault behind you and go dormant until my masters return to store new things here.”
She doesn’t seem to acknowledge or understand Zazu’s offer for her to go with them. Also, a closer look reveals she’s built into the plinth, not sitting on it. For her to leave you’d have to somehow dismantle the plinth and build her legs, which might just break her if important parts are inside said plinth.

A FYI on situation.....
Just updating people, still in hospital, the multiple infections are being a pain to untangle. sometime tomorrow i should be finding out if i'm headed home or to a rehab center, it all depends on if the antibiotics can be pills or not. i'll try and keep people informed.
