Knight Commander Sigvar Ironhorn (David F) AC 42 (T 16, FF 38) CMD 41 HP 216 / 216 Character Sheet
Wednesday March 24th, 2021 6:13:48 PM

Sigvar places his faith in his armor and Gargul's power. Aside from the normal enhancement he casts on his sword each day he simply protects himself from fire and when the others are ready draws his blade and stride to the center of the camp to get the attention of the orcs. He takes no hostile action, simply waits for them to acknowledge him and begin the process of negotiation. He does mention that he is there to talk to them when they notice him and gather.

Tinker takes no more than a blink of his eyes to note the plan is ‘just walk up and talk’. He trot up to Sigvar, going 10’ left and 10’ behind, setting up a possible wedge with the Paladin as the apex: the most versatile skirmish formation, he thinks absently.

His Urgrosh is in both hands in an easy grip, the magical spear point providing its Defender bonus on the dwarf, and he’s Ready to fight defensively.

He keeps his eyes peeled for anything that shows this is more than Orcs. Being sure to report his observations to the team.

If he does not come across any look-outs, he climbs a tree near their makeshift palisade to a height that will allow him to jump over the stakes and into the compound.

Sigvar strides boldly into a camp of orcs. His divine senses clearly indicate they are thoroughly evil.

They don't seem intimidated though, and their ranks close up behind Sigvar and Tinker. They trade some words with each other in orcish, which amount to a bit of trash talking. One eventually steps up when you express wanting to talk and grunts in orcish.

You must be here to pay tribute to the new rulers of this land! You can drop that shiny armor and weaponry and be on your way. Unless you'd like to grovel at the mistress' feet personally.

Ah the brashness of youth. Sigvar attempts to make this sound like the orc has a choice. He fails and it comes out as more of an intimidation rather than a diplomatic request. Knowing Trayvin will translate he tells the orc, in common.

The orcs thought they had the upper hand, but then their enemies double in an instant as some of the cloaked KCs make their move.

Pompous announces his presence with words and arrows, pincushioning the rearmost shaman in a few seconds.

Trayvin couldn't be less bothered by the swords in the air around him and calmly casts a buff of his own and Michael positions himself for an explosive next round.

Pru keeps up her long range support, and there's no ceiling to get in the way this time. The back group of 5 starts falling upwards, just in time to be engulfed in cold from Anna. One of the bears avoids it a bit in his tumble, but the rest take the full brunt.

Tinker resets his stance and slashes and stabs away at the orc. He notices that his strikes don't hit quuuite as hard as they could, but are still highly effective.

Nikolai phases himself inside the tent just in time to see the orc who ran in going back out, followed by a dangerous looking orc woman with a bow. He can tell she must be a plant influenced creature of some kind, and she has a hawk sitting comfortably on her arm. The shaman behind has a way around that, and channels a burst of negative energy.

The upward falling group has severely limited options. The shaman reaches out and casts a spell on one of the bears. Purple bear gets himself under purple orc and charges at Anna. He has no luck getting through her armor, but at least he isn't falling anymore.

The other bear keeps tumbling, but the green orc pulls a bow off his shoulder and shoots some back at Pompous, connecting once. 13 damage Additionally, the last bear on the ground finally sits up and charges himself at the glorious archer. The bear gets a solid bite in. 21 piercing

Trayvin finishes his summon and the elemental immediately unloads on the caster. Pru follows that up with an explosion of lightning, finally revealing herself in her glory. The leader is slippery though and completely sidesteps the shot. The bear dodges the worst of it, as does the caster, who also seems to be a bit resistant. The rider takes the full shot though.

Tinker tries a flanking move himself, but realizes he can't quite get an angle on the orc either. he also has improved uncanny dodge! He still takes a solid blow though. moved you on the map - not much room without smushing Michael

Nikolai provides some intel to his team and moves into a better position.

Sigvar doesn't like being shot, but knows how effective an unfettered archer is. He zooms through the gravity field without a though and smashes into the bear. Up close, he can see that it's a bit taller than average, and standing up was able to just bite at Pompous' legs. The bear is not evil, and sure doesn't like a sword in its back. The teetering orc does take a swing (feat excluded him from damage), but can't connect. The bear also tries to get an AoO on Pompous, but didn't quite connect, even though he was going for the right target (85%, but miss).

Anna delivers a swift kick while she charges up her breath.

Sigvar may have to give Pompous a talking to about drinking during battle, but he still puts an impressive 4 arrows into the leader.

Michael finally catches up to the flow of combat, just in time to miss the caster. However, he still has a perfectly good target in front of him. It seems like he's just a little bit better at rogue-ing than Tinker, as he manages to pounce on his target and find all the right spots to take him down.

Pru reminds the DM of how the rules work, which means that the floating green orc managed to fire some more ineffectual arrows last round. She can't see the leader at the moment as she stepped into the tent, but she has another easy target who just misses the save, clutches his chest, and is officially one-shot by the sorceress.

Trayvin's summon denies the banishment and beats up the caster some more, then he throws his own fire into the mix, setting the tent on fire as the leader dodges out of the way again, but her cronies all take some damage, and the caster's fire resistance isn't enough to save him. bear and rider save for half

Tinker thinks that the beefy orcs have some rogue levels, not being accustomed enough to barbarians to know about their surprising dodginess. He positions himself to make the green caster regret casting any more spells.

Sigvar keeps doing his best to draw the bear's attention (all hit but the 18), and keeps himself in tiptop shape as well.

Anna kicks the riding orc again, which is enough to dislodge him from his seat where he plummets to his death.

Pompous also can't see the leader, but he still has a few targets to choose from. His most likely target is the hovering spellcaster, who now resembles a dripping pincushion.

Enemy Turn
The leader bellows in rage at the inaction of the green woman and tries to cast a spell to stop the bleeding, just in time to run into Nikolai's fists. The 1-2 punch is just enough to knock her over death's door.

The Green Woman looks at Nikolai as he appears, but doesn't look at all surprised by his presence. Whether she's a great actress or already knew about him sneaking around is for him to wonder. Sense Motive DC30 (Nikolai Only) Highlight to display spoiler: {You suspect she has some way of noticing things around her that aren't visible. }

She sighs, makes a small gesture that extinguishes the fire in the tent, and speaks to him in Common. I suspect you'll have to put the rest of the soldiers down, but if you could tell your Fist to not hurt the bears any more, I'd take it as a personal favor. It is not their fault what their trainers do.

Outside, the fight rages on, but you notice that the bears that are in control of their bodies sit themselves down in the dirt. The orcs continue their increasingly futile fighting though. The caster has been floored by Pru's spell, so the orc is alone to fight Tinker.

The last remaining orc is lucky that he got stuck in the gravity field. Not having gotten the opportunity to engage in melee, he didn't enter the same battle rage that the others had, and is pretty easy too convince that it's smart to surrender.

Pru is saving her spells for now, but maybe be convinced to spend a slot when the still floating orc and bears start to plummet.

The bear looks a bit confused to hear someone speaking its language and cocks its head in what would be an adorable fashion, if it weren't still a huge and intimidating spiny bear. He gives a little whuff noise that Pompous can only interpret as true friends bring treats.

The Green Woman seems intrigued that Nikolai cares enough to try to stabilize the orc leader, but the downside of that orc fortitude is that when you go down, you're really dead. Do not worry for her. She is better gone to the next world I think. She would not find satisfaction in this one.

You should not judge the tribe by this one's actions. We have lived in the hills for generations, and where her father wanted to build a better life for us all, she thought to prove her strength by returning to the old ways, and she was able to convince some few of her brethren to join her in her folly.

He’s unsure of the Dire Bears and keeps his distance, dispite Pompous and Anna seeming to have things in hand with them. Prudence is impressive and Tinker gives her a bit of a bow-and-wave as he makes his way up to Nikolai and the Green Woman. The report from the monk sparks his interest: unusual in the dwarf.

I came to keep an eye on poor Liath here, for her father's sake. You will remember that none of the villagers were killed. I was able to do that without too much interference. You would do well to inform the villagers that the rest of the tribe had no part in this senseless exercise, and can take them some of this equipment to pay for the damages. I will also use my magic to reverse the damage done to their crops.

I will convey what happened here back to the tribe, and I agree that we have no further quarrel. I'm sure our chief will make some gesture back to the village to confirm your report to them.

Prudence’s voiced concern adds to something the dwarf has been gnawing, and he thinks to the KCs. “I like doing something good, but we are heads of a whole company of mercenaries too. How do we keep every sad story from driving us out of business?” A pause, and continue, “I say we give all the loot to the village since it is on their land, and then they ‘pay’ us most of the loot for our work. We get paid, they have enough to rebuild, and contacts with a friendly Chief.”

To be fair, they were sent here to guard the village, it's bit much to ask troops trained to follow orders to go out and find trouble. also I don't think the average Troop could have handled this. This called for at least a full squad of 20 men with support to take to these guys on.

Nikolai accepts the word of the Green Woman, he really has no choice, but would have like to know more about her relationship with the orcs. However, he shrugs, knowing that asking such details would be shrugged off, or at least answered in a non-answer way.

"The village owes you much gratitude for keeping things in as much control as you could and managed to spare their lives. For our part, we would like to extent a hand of friendship and let you know that if you encounter something you know will be of great danger to deal with, please call upon us. "The green woman cast Plant Growth," Pru tells her companions. "That will help plants in the surrounding area grow more quickly. Then she and the bears left with Transport via Plants. All druid spells, of course."

"If that bow is actually evil, we should decommission it," she agrees. "But 'unholy' doesn't necessarily mean 'evil;' it just means it can damage certain kinds of creatures."

Pru is fine with giving her share of the loot back to the village.

DM Warren - Battle at the Red Hills Red Hill Camp

There seems to be agreement to take the bow, most likely to use the Fist resources to turn it to a better purpose. Pompous seems to want to keep a fair share of the equipment for payment, but they may get more benefit from returning most of the loot to the town and letting them dispense with it and pay the KCs and the Fist in gold.

The green woman didn't give Anna much to go on. Best she can tell, she was more plant than Anna, and a powerful druidess as well.

As they make their way back to town, the Headwoman is grateful to hear of their success, and even more so to know that the threat to her town is gone and the tribal relationship not completely compromised. She is willing to offer a good meal if you plan to spend any more time here, which may help if you want to workout a better payment plan than you'll get selling gear at the catacombs.

Trayvin channels some healing, and there is plenty more where that came from. If there is no imminent combat, he should be able to have everyone patched up pretty quickly.

channel energy = 17 hp healed all around for those gathered close.

Active Effects: resist energy(fire 30)

Used:
spells: summon 8, resist fire, flame strike
channel energy 5/6 remaining

Tinker nods his thanks to Trayvin, magical healing is not something the dwarf has been used to since leaving the Agents several years ago.

He corrects Sigvar. “I can’t teleport, only fly”

And to Pompous and the others, he clarifies his plan. “I didn’t say to permanently give all loot to the village; just enough for them to hand it back to us as a Fist payment, and then we hand it back to them as ‘we weren’t on contract’ so they have a nest egg for their rebuilding. About 200gp worth of equipment would work for that.”

“ That’s a years wages for these people. It’s not honorable to skim those who are in trouble and can’t afford it: that’s bullying.”

OOC: give us the whole list. Hard to say 'give it to the village' when we don't know what they are.
As for village compensation, the fist could always send some engineers to help rebuild rather than cash or magic items.

IC:
Before leaving for the village, Nikolai asks his friends to assess the fortifications these orcs build and give their opinion if they should be demolished or given to the town as an outpost. He also has the loot inventoried.
"Our archives will need an accurate account of the loot. Remember, we hired an accountant, so anything given back to the town will need to be notated for the records. If the town wants this fort as a satellite outpost to extend the town's protection, then we count that as 'loot'. Otherwise we demolish it so other unwanted critters can't use it."

Only after the assessments are made and loot truly decided upon do they head back to town.

Nikolai encourages his friends to spend the night and enjoy the town's hospitality. There's no real hurry to get back, to his knowledge.

With that being said, I do not know if it would be better to earn good will by doing this one pro-bono or give them the loot and arrange payment later or send engineers and medics in exchange for the loot. As for the fort, if the village doesn't want it, before we raise it do we have the staff available to potentially turn it into a training outpost or something?"

I think we should have some sort of messaging system set up and a codebook. a message scroll spell has a 25-word max. but if we had a codebook each word could stand for a sentence. there also messenger pigeons. and we could have one of us go check a site periodically, we could also train Thumbs to look out for opportunities like this, to put down a problem before it can reach the level that this one did. there are options, we just need to figure out which ones do the most good. .

Michael makes his point and then digs in. a good meal is welcome after the bloody mess that they made.

Shapeshifting for battle and espionage with some using of magic device thrown in. I imagine if I can put together a unit that specializes in these things we'd get some more druids and folks that could trick an animal messenger spell into working. The only thing I'm concerned with for animal messenger is could the animal messenger be interdicted in sending?"

RobC - "The Fist detachment did its job, for the most part."

The party enjoy what turns out to be surprisingly good food for such a small place. Michael is easily able to find someone to share a little tobacco with. "Halfling stuff" the fellow explains as he offers his tobacco pouch. Not too shabby.

There is some talk about long range communication. A Message spell is too limited. A Sending spell might work, but you could be restricted by the number of words. Sure a code might work, but as Anna points out the code might not cover every situation. Animal messengers could allow for very detailed messages as Pru explains, though there is the time factor if something is urgent. There are no doubt several other spells that might be useful (scrying, dreams, etc), or even a combination of those already suggested. Another consideration might be how someone from the Citadel could contact the party while they are out adventuring should something urgent arise. So many things to think about!

Right now though it is time to eat, drink and relax before whatever the Wold might next throw your way.

Sigvar enjoys the meal provided by their hosts. He begins planning the training regimne for his cadre . It will need to be standardized so that it can continue in his abscence. It will consist of physical conditioning performed in heavy gear, thus helping to assure that armor check penalties are not a hampering factor to the participants. Book work, something the taur was never a fan of but accepts as the best way short of guest teachers to learn new techniques. Sparring on a constant basis, with a weekly ranking to promote healhy competition and to foster the students to learn new techniques and then demonstrate them to the class.
Guest teachers, hmmm, Sigvar might want to look into that. People like Nikolai and Michael did not reach the physical conditioning the Minotaur paladin did, At least not in damage taking ability, but their ability to evade damage and survive on the battlefield is well known to Sigvar. There must be other combat practitioners with similar knowledge. Maybe the DC, WLA or even the Chancer's had people willing to teach. The Sage's Guild and possibly the Star Mages could be valuable sources for the book learning portion too. Hadn't most of these guilds recognized the new Fist commanders and offered whatever help they could?

What type of ally can they expect from the Green Lady? But alas those questions will remain a mystery for now, and maybe the Mailed Fist may never need to intervene in anything around here again so knowing wouldn't matter much anyway.

Tinker comes up with a way to keep people entertained. The kids have a lot of fun with the metal rings but none manage to solve the puzzle. One bright young girl came close, while another rugged lad tried to see if he could use brute force, but to no avail. The villagers had some fun with the lockm, but again, it was just a little too difficult for them.

Nikolai is a little frustrated by the lack of information that is forthcoming, so chalks it up to something the Mailed Fist might never be called on again.

The others set to enjoying the food and the company, while Sigvar starts mentally planning a vigorous training routine.

Pru's relaxation is ruined a little when out of nowhere a swallow lands on the table right in front of her! Tied to it's leg is a tiny scroll, and it remains quite still to allow her to retrieve it. The writing is very small. The poor bird would have struggled to carry a larger piece of paper: "Need you back at Citadel. Several factions from Shadow Mountain on brink of war. Emissaries already here, each seeking to employ Fist against the others. CdM."

Evidently Cedric had the same thought about using Animal Messengers.

With the paper removed from it's leg the robin quickly flies off to go do bird related things.
