Where Is Myre?

DM Kathy
Monday April 12th, 2021 2:29:38 PM

Upon your return, Beech takes a tour of the site, and finds that very little has changed. A few tents have been shifted, due mostly to campfires and prevailing winds. Everything else is much the same.

Lothlo looks for signs of recent Thieves' Guild activity, but finds none.

Ash suggests that Hilia might be the best one to use the lute, and goes to look for Mike, Brianna, and Codru. Zazu and Niall are also eager to talk about any developments in the search for Myre.

Hearing of a missing person, Grindar asks what he can do to help.

You find Codru easily enough, as he is also looking for you. [OOC: I don't see a Mike or a Briana on the Woldipedia page. If you want them included, it might not be a bad idea to add them.]

"Welcome back!" he says. "Did you find the thing?" He listens as you describe the quest for the lyre.

"We've made some progress," he says. "Mostly Hilia and me, but the others helped. Well, mostly Hilia, really. She turns out to be good with codes. We haven't found anything about Myre, but there's a place we should probably check out. Well, you should probably check out."

"Can we get a couple nights rest in, or do we need to go right now? I'd like to get the bridge across the river before we head off, I had another idea while we were coming back. I will work better, and the lyre will help greatly....."

"Great work, Codru" Ash isn't keen to wait any more than one night. They've already been stalled and each day is another one where Myre is being held. She's doesn't even want to think what Myre will be going through right now, but the thoughts invade her mind anyway. Torture? Experimentation? A return to slavery? No, she doesn't want Myre to spend one more minute with her captives. "So what's the lead?"

She turns her attention back to the lyre and it's uses. "I'd imagine that lodgings would take precedence in terms of construction. Besides, Hilia is best suited to using the lyre. She can do all sorts of things while we rescue Myre"

Yes, lodgings and perhaps a protective wall are always a good start. I'm not sure a bridge would add much in the short term.

Anyway, tell us more about this place we should check out? And if there is nothing about Myre, what is the connection that is pointing us to this place?

When we get back I check on Buggo and the others. I also make preparations to continue our conduction efforts until we are ready to go.

(I need to reread what we were doing. I think wood shape was being used to turn large trees into living houses and to craft a tree top village. I think we talked about a hedge/tree wall around the town. And I want to start work creating a cave or other storage area for cultivating the edible and medicinal (non sentient) mushrooms we found. We were also working on a way to keep the river from flooding.)

Beech wants to wait a few days before heading out, and hopes to get a bridge in place by the time you leave.

Ash and Lothlo also have plans for building the new town.

But, everyone is interested in the specifics of what has been discovered.

"It's a camp," Codru explains. "The Thieves' Guild has a camp not too far away. Sounds a little like Freedom's Landing, actually, except I think it's smaller. Anyway, they recently completed a couple of cells there. For prisoners or something. And there's something about snatching people. Hilia will know more."

You go talk to Hilia. She is, of course, a bit distracted at the prospect of using the musical instrument to build with, but is eventually able to focus on the decoded text.

"It's called Alder Camp," she says. "Not much of a place--a few tents, I think. But they built cells there, and one of the letters says it's 'in case we have to snatch someone.' There's nothing specific about Myre, but if the Guild has her, it's possible they're holding her there. Or maybe there's somebody else they 'snatched' that has some information. Anyway, I think it's worth a look."

Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 35/36, CMD: 21

Lothlo nods and listens to the news about the camp.
Did it say anything about how many people are in the camp, anything about what kind of guards or how to enter?

Lothlo asks for details about the camp, but there aren't many.

"I think there are guards," Hilia says, "but I don't know how many."

Ash contemplates a diplomatic or stealth approach.

Naithi suspects a trap, and asks if anyone can do any kind of divination. She points out that the Emerald Kingdom wouldn't allow such a camp. "I don't think they know about it," Hilia says. "The Guild is trying to keep it secret."

Zazu contemplates using the newly-acquired harp to lay waste to the camp. Of course, if you do that, the harp can't be here in Freedom's Landing building stuff.

Grindar is fine with stealth, and is eager to be off!

Beech would prefer to take a night's rest.

And he has a point. It's quite late in the day, and it's been eventful. You probably ought to rest and start afresh in the morning. Among other things, it will give you time to discuss strategy. Hilia claims the harp for now, but says she will return it to you if you decide to take it along.

Ash speaks to the others about the tasks for Hilia while they are away. "The lyre doesn't actually provide any materials. We need to do that ourselves. With that in mind, perhaps she could start with creating some caverns for under the settlement? It would be a good place to store things and we could even start that mushroom farm that Naithi mentioned. All the stone that's excavated by that then gets used for walls and buildings. Nothing gets wasted. If Hilila is as good as a performer as we think, she could probably get all the excavation and building done tomorrow!"

She also points out that Parvati should probably be consulted and help with the designs to make sure everything is sturdy.

Ash is ready for a good nights sleep. She'll need all her spells if they're planning a rescue mission.

Before we head over there, I think we need to decide on a course of action. The is an organization that has declared war on us already, threatened us, and kidnapped one of our own under very disturbing circumstances. Even scouting out the are could get very bloody, very fast. We don't actually know that Myre is there, but since the camp itself illegal we need to assume that they've been ordered to protect it's secrecy with their lives.

I think it's also worth trying to reach out to one of the faeries or leprechauns before we head out. If someone built some cells in their forest, they more than likely know about it and have been keeping an eye on it.

In the morning, Beech sketches plans for a rotating bridge.

Ash proposes that Hilia use the lyre to excavate, as building materials have not yet been gathered.

Lothlo, Naithi, and Grindar discuss an overall approach to the Thieves' Guild.

You do know that the Thieves' Guild is based in the Emerald City, so what you're dealing with here is a branch or subsection. You don't know how much communication there is with the main Guild, or whether the local group takes orders from them or operates independently.

The Guild is large enough that you will not be able to take it down all at once, not at your present strength. You can probably take out this camp, however, if that's what you decide you want to do. You have no way of knowing how the Guild would react to such a move, however.

Ash considers this a little more

Beech does a quick check among the tents and finds everyone in good spirits. They're still happy and thankful to be free of slavery, and news has traveled of the musical instrument that's going to help build the town. There is excitement and optimism.

Lothlo goes looking for fae, and he does find a couple of pixies, but they seem more interested in the chase game they're playing than in helping him. They don't seem to know anything of the camp.

Naithi goes looking for a good spot for a druid grove. As your DM understands it, anything north of Freedonm's Landing is on the other side of the river, so a grove northwest of town would probably need to wait on Beech's bridge or some kind of ferry.

Ash goes to question the prisoner. Seeing as this is the first your DM is hearing about a prisoner, it is perhaps not surprising that he knows nothing of the camp--or at least, nothing he is willing to divulge.

Grindar and Niall discuss the specifics of the mission. You could do a kind of "smash and grab" rescue, but the two of them, at least are in favor of completely eliminating the camp.

The camp is northeast of town, which puts it on the other side of the river. How are you going to get across?

Ash gauges the distance across the river. It's only about 25 feet; the Rope of Climbing would span the distance easily.

Grindar suggests using the lyre, an idea Naithi supports. However, there really isn't enough downed timber to make it work.

For such a small camp it's more likely that they are patrolling closer to their camp. Myre's kidnapping may have been devastating to us, but for the thieves guild this is small potatoes. Maybe we'll get lucky and they will have assumed we are resigned to waiting for them to contact us per their instructions.

Though I do think you are right, even if they don't know we are crossing we need to assume they have patrols or traps at some point before we get to the cells they built.

Actually, it turns out not to be that hard. Parts of it, like getting all the branches to line up and stay lined up, are tricky, but in a short while you have a good raft that can hold half of you. Naithi and Camalayas are very stealthy, even when the ground opens up and they fall into the pit! Unfortunately, the bottom of the bit is covered in old pots and pans, and other bits of discarded metal, seemingly for the purpose of making a racket when somebody falls in. And what a racket it makes! Clang! Clang! Clatter! Clang! Birds burst from nearby treetops, peeping and twittering in alarm.

At a guess, the element of surprise is lost.

Naithi takes 10 damage; Camalayas takes 3 damage.

Grindar tried to grab them, but was unable to move quickly enough.

Lothlo looks around, but sees no sign of an ambush. Yet. Ash, not taking any chances, conceals herself anyway.

Beech gets out his Rope of Climbing and is soon able to extricate both girl and rabbit from the pit.

It has been a few minutes, and there is still no sign of any ambush or any sentries. Perhaps the Guild felt that the pit trap was enough of a warning. Perhaps they have something else planned. Either way, it looks as if the excitement here has passed.

I ask Camalayas to a check the area for scents that could help us with tracking whoever built the trap or to help us locate future traps as a carefully observe the area for clues to spot future traps. I also examine the inside of the trap for anything if note. Metal like this is bad for the environment, and I can always use more pans for cooking. I take the lot, if we cannot make it look like the trap was set off by an animal. Even a broken pot can be mended and the metal could be reused for any number if things.

Naithi salvages some of the pans. You see that there were also several tin plates and cups, which you can also retrieve. You consider throwing an animal into the trap as a ruse, but you're not sure how effective that would be.

In terms of territory, you are far enough from Freedom's Landing--and on the other side of the river--that you really aren't in your territory anymore. It's difficult to say for sure whether you're in the camp's territory, since you don't know exactly where it is. It would appear, however, that the rogues do consider this part of their territory.

Beech keeps his eyes open, which doesn't help all that much. It is Lothlo who spots the next trap, or at least its tripwire. It's not immediately obvious what it will do if set off.

Lothlo believes that you must be getting close to the camp. Ash wonders whether circling around the camp would be a better idea.

Grindar favors a direct approach, although he's willing to be persuaded otherwise. Beech is just following so he doesn't get lost.

The trouble with trying to circle the camp is that you don't know exactly where the camp is. You have a general location, but not a specific one. For all you know, you're already circling the camp. Lothlo has a point; the traps show you're on the right track, but you don't know whether it's a direct track or an oblique one. Did the Thieves' Guild just trap a single straight path to the camp? Or did they place traps throughout the surrounding area so that anyone coming from any direction would encounter traps?

I doubt it's just a straight shot they put the traps in, the odds of us missing them are too great. They probably are spread out, but the increase in danger probably means we are getting closer.

Are we ready to keep going? I vote we head straight there, as we don't really know how to go around it as we don't know it's exact location. No reason to risk missing it and hitting extra traps on the way

Zazu takes off a buckler (move action), takes out the scroll (move action) and reads the Invisibility spell (standard action) and dons the buckler. The trained rogue moves out as silently as possible, walking a bit apart (say 60 ft or so). The elf also casts Message, whispering, "This is Zazu; I'm invisible and likely to use illusions, so do not be startled."

Grindar sees Zazu go invisible, and thinks to himself, "I need to be able to do that, and I really should have shadow added to my armor". With Cyrchwr Mawr in his hand, Grindar attempts to follow Zazu's lead with a stealth approach, but is worried he isn't being as silent as he hoped (Stealth 11) He tries to keep his eyes peeled for any danger (Perception 15). Cotton is by his side and at Grindar's request attempts to be as stealthy as possible (stealth 16) Grindar asks her to keep her nose to the wind, but it seems she found a gopher hole that required her noses attention. (Perception 8)
