Scene 1 - The Blame Game

RobC - "Nobody always wins. It is important...."
Thursday April 15th, 2021 3:32:09 AM

Tinker is a good sport about it all and gifts each of the children a coin for having a go.

There is a quick discussion about what to do with the loot until Nikolai declares that the party only need to take the magical gear. The mundane things and the bow would make a good prize at the next fair - and also provides some good will for the Fist!

Among the party the knowledge of Shadow Mountain is scarce. Nikolai plans to go to the library to do a little study on the topic but there's no telling how current the information will be. Anna knows that it's in pretty much the center of the Elennian Peninsula. The mountain is impossibly tall such that it's height has never been determined. It is known that it extends up beyond the air envelope of The Wold. It also has a base width of close to 100 miles at it's widest point. It's a monster of a mountain. To be clear that's "monster" as in size, not "monster" as in your DM gave it a stat block.

Without any further delay Pru teleports the party back to the Citadel and into the office.

De Mowbray is sitting by the desk, moving pages of paper about into perfectly arranged piles. The pile on the left look like empty forms, whereas the different piles on the right have been filled and signed by him. You've caught him by surprise, but on seeing your arrival in the room he jumps to his feet to stand at attention and delivers a sharp salute.

"Perfect timing. I wouldn't have sent for you if it wasn't important"

He goes on to explain that he has started taking care of the minutia in your absence. Contract renewals, staff movement and payments, rearranging the training schedules to make them more efficient and such. He's been busy. This matter though is a little outside his paygrade.

"We've got some visitors from Shadow Mountain. The griffons of the north slope, the frost giants of the east slope and the hawkmen of the south slope have all sent delegates here. They arrived separately earlier today. From what I've been able to ascertain they're all blaming each other for something and it's about to blow up. One of them had the idea to hire us to fight for them and it sounds like the others wanted to try and get in first."

" Have them situate their camps outside the walls and since they are all rival parties I think we can all agree that they will not go about armed if they wish to garner our help. Any attacks on the other delegates or on our surrounding folk will earn then immediate expulsion from negotiation and possible execution. If you would be so kind can you prepare a briefing in the morning about Shadow Mountain and what we know about each of the factions present?"
"Once they are situated and have made camp I for one would like to meet and , um, assess the intentions of each group. Have I missed anything or overstepped in these orders, Councilors?"

Sigvar wishes to walk among their camps and detect for evil among the delegates and their followers.

It sounds like a good start. Let's make sure those camps are far enough apart so they don't get any ideas about attacking each other.

Do we know who is speaking for or with the griffons? I didn't know they had much of a spoken language.

Nikolai nods at Sigvar's plan. "If we met the delegates separate, we could hear each story in full without interference from the others. We'd need to split up and meet them at the same time so we aren't accused of playing favorites.
How does that sound?
We can get them settled in their camps first, then split into three groups for a visit. How about tomorrow morning? I'd like to spend the night in the library doing research."

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {De Mowbray seems a little uneasy as you detail your plans, no doubt aware that he's already done the exact opposite of each of them! Whoops!}

"There are no camps as such, sir" De Mowbray explains to Sigvar. "Just two delegates from each of the factions. The leaders I believe." He hesitates a moment before clearing his throat and proceeding "We've, that's to say I've already set them up with rooms in the Citadel. Separate of course and well distanced from each other. We do have guards positioned outside each room however to ensure they don't go wandering. I thought it best they were somewhere that we could keep an eye on them and keep them apart."

"Disarming them was... problematic. The hawkmen refused as in their words it would leave them defenseless against the griffons. With the hawkmen refusing, the giants did too. I couldn't see them as trying anything while inside our walls or under our eyes, so to avoid a diplomatic incident I didn't push the issue any further. I did however clearly remind them that we were more than capable of quelling any violence should it arise and that any hostile act against a member of the Fist - or anyone in our care - would be swiftly and severely dealt with."

He looks towards Trayvin on the topic of the griffons "I didn't think griffons had much of a language either, sir, but these ones seem more than capable of speaking. Granted most of what they say isn't terribly pleasant but they are most certainly, well, talking". That must come as a surprise to some!

There is a short rapping on the door before Novik enters, looking a little flustered. "Sir" She stops as she enters the office to salute De Mowbray, but on seeing you all she stands a little straighter and maintains the salute. "They're at it again"

"Thankyou" De Mowbray sighs and looks to the group "I wasn't sure how long it would take for you to return. We've tried to start facilitating peaceful discussions with them however it has been a little rough. We set aside one of the war rooms on the third level for the talks - far enough away that they wouldn't disturb any of the troops. We do of course have guards posted by the doors."

Sense Motive 8
To De Mowbray, Sigvar says, " I would have thought they would have sent more per group. In this case having them inside the Citadel is preferable, As you say we can watch them better. Putting them in a shared talking space though, that sounds problematic."
To Novik, Sigvar returns the salute and says "Show us please."
Sigvar loosens his sword and follows Novik to the war room. If they were all assembled it would be easier to feel out their motives.

Tinker casts a jaundiced eye at Pompous. The veteran is familiar with the tune. For an unknown reason, humans like to sing it when dwarfs are around. But then he shrugs, not worth the effort. He doesn’t have to like everyone to work well with them.

RobC - "Right now I guess we work on getting the animosity issue down a level or two."  d20+15=30 ; d20+17=27 ; d20+17=18 ; d20+18=24 ; d20+15=21 ; d20+8=14 ; d20+8=28 ;

Anna has never heard of griffons speaking before. They lack the right vocal cords for it. If these two can actually speak then they are unlike any she knows of. There are sometimes anomalies though. Perhaps these two are special and it's how they got to be the leaders?

Novik nods to Sigvar and then starts leading the way through the stone corridors.

"Each group has sent two delegates. From what I've been able to understand they've left their forces at the mountain so as not to make themselves vulnerable there. The griffons have sent Ceres and Herema. They might be the smartest of the lot. Bruvag and Dludnar are here for the giants. They are probably the best diplomats that the giants have. The hawkmen are Doralle and Soliphis. They have been polite enough to us, but I think see themselves as superior to everyone else in the room."

Novik gives the party enough information so that they know who they are dealing with:
Griffons
Ceres: Male. The smaller of the two. Still very big though! Has flecks of grey appearing on the fur of his body, indicating that he is quite old.
Herema: Female. The larger of the two. Also has grey hairs starting to appear though not as many as Ceres.

Giants
Bruvag: Male. 15ft tall. Light blue hair and eyes. He wears a chain shirt dotted with diamonds, and a black bear pelt as a cape. Unarmed, though given the size of his arms he could probably crush things quite easily with his bare hands.
Dludnar: Male. 15ft tall. Light blue hair and eyes. He wears direwolf pelts adorned with gold clasps and jewelry. Also unarmed.

Hawkmen
Doralle: Male. Looks a bit like a skinny elf. He has dark hair that’s been cut in uneven chunks and vaguely looks like ruffled feathers. He wears tight fitting, black clothing with a few blue opals around the collar. He has multiple silver piercings in both ears, and a piercing on each eyebrow.
Soliphis: Female. Smaller and somehow even skinnier than Doralle. She has short dark hair that sticks out in all directions. She wears tight fitting black clothing that matches that of Doralle, however hers has emeralds around the collar. She has a gold piercing in each ear, in each eyebrow, and each nostril.

As the party approach the room they can already hear shouting from inside and see a mug of water hurled out the door and into the corridor. Some of the shouting starts to become clearer.
"THE SOUND OF GIANT SKULLS CRASHING ONTO ROCKS WILL SERVE AS A WARNING TO YOUR PEOPLE!"
"THE FIST MIGHT PROTECT YOU HERE BUT ONCE YOU LEAVE YOUR HEAD WILL HANG FROM MY WALL!"
"HAWKMEN HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO FLY. IT WOULD BE MY PLEASURE TO TAKE YOU UP IN THE AIR AND LET GO!"
"THE NEXT GIANT WHO SETS FOOT ON THE SOUTH SLOPE WILL DOOM YOUR ENTIRE RACE TO EXTINCTION!"

Doesn't really sound like much diplomacy is happening yet.

The six guards by the door have their hands on the hilts of their swords. They haven't drawn them yet however look prepared to should the need arise.

Novik slows down her pace a little. "I was able to convince them to leave their weapons in their rooms this time and in return I would see to it they were fed according to the diets of their race. A small price to pay to minimize any bloodshed I think."

Inside the room everyone is on their feet, standing behind their tables. The frost giants are on the right hand side of the room, alternating pointing and shouting at the griffons and the hawkmen. The griffons sit at the north end of the room. Their wings are open and Ceres has risen onto his hind legs and is cursing at the hawkmen. The hawkmen are on the left and are mimicking and mocking the frost giants.

Tinker reads this much like everyone else. It's a powder keg. It wouldn't take much to push any of them over the edge. With these each being the leaders of their people, any actions taken here could influence an entire race - for better or worse.

"Tinker." Pru steps up next to him and lays a gentle hand on his arm. In Dwarven, she says, "next time let me cast a Protection from Fire before you try anything like that."

If any of the assembled delegates understand Dwarven, they'll know she cares about her companion. If they don't, she hopes they'll believe she's trying to calm Tinker down. Either way, she establishes herself as the "nice one."

"Welcome to the Citadel," she says to the assembled delegates. "I do apologize for the delay in coming to speak with you. It was unavoidable, but of course it's always irritating to have to wait. And when we're irritated, we're easily angered, don't you find?"

Sigvar looks to detect evil in the room. All the delegates notice but only the hawkmen react. Doralle places his hands on his hips. "Do you treat everyone this way?! Not so much as a 'how do you do'? Just straight with casting spells. Does that mean we are permitted to cast spells too?" He looks angrily towards the griffons. Ceres snaps back, extending his claws towards Doralle "Try it and you'll lose your hand". "Finally we can agree with the birds" Bruvag clenches his fist and glares to the hawkmen. "Birds?!" Herema extends her neck in the direction of the giants. The shouting then resumes. It seems any perceived slight is enough to trigger an argument here.

Sigvar does not detect anyone as evil - even the giants. That isn't to say everyone in the room is good though. After all, he is only able to detect evil on a person if they are sufficiently strong. Highlight to display spoiler: {Detect Evil doesn't work on anyone with 4HD or less, no matter how evil they may be}.

Tinker then does something unexpected. Rushing into the room and setting himself on fire certainly gets the attention of the delegates. They all immediately stop bickering and take a step away from the fiery dwarf. The giants are obviously the most alarmed. Dlugnar places his hand to his side where a weapon should have been.

Had she known the plan Pru could have prepared the dwarf for his pyro display. If anyone here speaks dwarven she can't tell. They're all too focused on the fire.

With the room now quiet she is able to start with some diplomacy. There is grumbling and muttering all around but no further words are spoken loud enough to be heard. Trayvin follows up by calmly suggesting everyone take a seat again. The hawkmen are the first to sit down and are slowly followed by the griffons. Only once they are sure the others have calmed down do the giants sit back down. They all eye each other but none dare speak.

Then comes Nikolai's attempt at diplomacy. Had he been speaking on his own then chances are he would have made things a lot worse. As it is he doesn't hurt things, but doesn't really help them either. He does suggest everyone take a drink to pause for a moment. That would be fine for everyone except Soliphis whose mug isn't in the room right now.

Between them Pru and Trayvin have done a good job to at least get everyone to take a breath.

Michael starts discussions with the griffons and wants to know what the trouble is.

"They seek to drive us from our lands! That's what the trouble is." Ceres responds to Michael. He isn't shouting or speaking with his voice raised, but it is clear enough for everyone else to hear.

"Lies!" yells Dludnar. He appears ready to stand again but looks to Trayvin and then shuffles back into his seat.

"Do not deny it!" Ceres glances to the giant. Hemera places her claw on Ceres'. She is now noticeably calmer that Ceres, and continues with Michael "They have found some way to change the weather on the mountain. It is getting so cold that we will soon be driven away from our homes. The only ones who could benefit from such a thing are them".

Bruvag grins a little but doesn't respond. Dludnar nudges him and they mutter something in giant

Ceres obviously isn't happy. "They're not smart enough to do it on their own though. That's where the hawkmen came in. They taught them how to do it. They're going to share the mountain once we've gone!"

Now it's Soliphis' turn to speak up. "Lies! Well, the part where we're being blamed for something. The part about the giants not being smart is about right."

If all you have is the circumstansial evidence gained by answering the question of who benefits from the change to your mountain then it is not enough to proove that the changes are caused by the hawkmen and giants are doing it."

She pauses then continues, "For how many years have your people's shared the mountain in peace?" She asks the assembled groups

If she gets an answer she says, "...and that is a long time."

Regardless of it is a rhetorical question or not she continues, "What if in the interest of keeping that peace and if my fellow Knight Commanders agree rather than accept a contract on behalf of any single group against the other, we accept a contract from your three groups collectively to restore and keep the peace you all had going prior to the change to your mountain. We will investigate the cause of the recent coldness that is settling in and try to stop whatever is causing it. If it turns out that our investigation yields proof that the griffons claims are true then some kind of restituition might be in order for the griffons. However, if it turns out that there is some other explanation behind the coldness and we can put an end to it, then maybe the Griffons owe the Hawkmen and the Giants an apology. We've seen first hand the horrors of what can happen when peacible neighbors go to war against each other in error and we are still dealing with the ramifications of it in our own past. In the interest of sparing your people's this experience let us look into your mountain's cold spell and see if we might not be able to put things back to the way it once was and avert war, which will be bad for all your people's regardless who wins."

Turning to Doralle he continues, aloud, in Common. " I am Sigvar Ironhorn, one of the Knight Commanders of the Mailed Fist and Paladin of Lord Gargul, Lord of Life and Death."
"The Mailed Fist has never, and will not accept a contract from an evil employer. I seek to keep that from happening. I would recommend not casting any spells yourself as your fellow representatives would have no way of knowing if you were threatening them or gathering information. If you like, this conversation can be tabled until tomorrow at which time Trayvin and I can provide a Zone of Truth for it to take place inside of. Is that your desire? If you have nothing to hide and none of your fellow representative do either, it may get this entire problem sorted in the space of a few moments conversation."

To the Griffons he says, " I can see your plight but ask yourself, are giants of any kind subtle?" Turning to the Frost giant contingent he raises a hand to forestall any perceived interruption. " I mean no offense, just that like my own race yours is known for strength of arm and not for long reaching plans or deceptions. We say what we mean and if it offends, back it up with strength of arms, no?"
Returning to the Griffons. " I would wager that this is either some natural occurrence or the work of another party. I think what Anna says has Merit and you and the others should consider a fact finding mission by the Fist to see what is actually going on before pressing a war that will damage all of you populations. "Anna's suggestion is an excellent one," Pru says. "But I think that, in order to draft a contract that addresses everyone's concerns, we should speak with the three groups individually. We need to get a clear idea of the situation from each group's point of view, and that will be easier with less yelling." She smiles to take the sting out of those last words.

"Perhaps each group could select one of us to hear them out in private. Each selected person could bring one or two of their companions, as extra eyes and ears are always welcome. That way, none of you needs to wait to be heard, and we can get a full understanding of the situation."

Prudence and then Sigvar take care of any problem with the alchemist fire, so Tinker just lets the fire burn itself out. Mentally he thanks his friends, “I didn’t think they would listen to reason unless they had a break. Fried dwarf isn’t something you see every day.”

Now that people, griffons, giants, and beastfolk aren’t shouting at each other, Daemar slowly hovers down to the floor and moves back to the door, not even bothering to pat out the last bit of flame. He knows his strengths, and talking people around is NOT one of them! ‘Keep it up’, he thinks to the KCs, ‘I think you are on the right track with the negotiations.’

He keeps his glare up, ready to jump in between anyone if words become real weapons.

How do you feel about the current proposals, to negotiate under a zone of truth, and to each state your request separately before we reconvene?

Nikolai tries again, although he's getting the impression that logic and reasoning is going to be less effective than expected, none of the three races are known for any great wisdom or intelligence.

"Ceres, you claim that the mountain is starting to get too cold for comfort? I ask this: how cold does it need to get to drive you out?"

He turns to Soliphis. "Are the hawkmen immune to cold? How cold will it need to get to drive you out?

He turns to Dludnar, "I suppose that giants are pretty hardy when it comes to weather, but you aren't of the Frost Giant kin are you? How cold will it need to get to drive your Giant kin out?"

He positions himself to best address all three. "The word we received is that each one of you is accusing each other of trying to get the mountain for themselves. Yet, a mountain so cold to drive one or another out, is going to be too cold for any of your three. So give your accusations a rest and give us time to find the real source of your problem.

The party put on their best diplomacy faces and start probing a little more into the claims.

Hemera grunts and calmly responds. "The Giants are moving further and further onto the edges of the North Slope, encroaching on our lands. We've seen them gathering! They seek to overrun the mountain and force us to leave. Changing the weather is all part of their plan".

Dludnar slams his fist on the table. "I knew it! The griffons HAVE been spying on us. Sending their scouts to our lands, looking for ways to attack us. This baseless conspiracy of theirs is just a way to gather the necessary strength to defeat us. Well it won't work! The cold is a sign from Frethja. She embraces us and wishes these others to leave!" Bruvag smiles and nods in complete agreement.

Nikolai comes to the realization that these are Frost Giants. The cold certainly benefits them.

Ceres though is still riled up. "The Hawkmen are providing support to the Giants, even encouraging them to invade the North slope! They have done for many years now. With us gone there will be more land for them to share. They have allied against us and we need the support of the Fist to defend ourselves from these invaders. Force them off our territory for good!"

Doralle gest to his feet. "The Griffons have been spying on us too, and don't say you haven't! We've seen you circling us." Soliphis stands next to him "They all know that we are the most vulnerable to the cold. We'll have to be the ones to leave and then the cold will 'magically' stop and wouldn't you know, more mountain for THEM!"

Ceres roars back "Spying?! We were looking for food! There would have been plenty on our slope if it weren't for the giants invading our lands!"

Things start to get a little heated again. Anna and Pru manage to calm the griffons and hawkmen, while the giants fold their arms as they listen to Sigvar.

The party then offer a few suggestions.

Anna, Sigvar and Michael put out the suggestion of a fact finding mission. Doralle nods his head and then rests his hands on the table. "We would happily welcome you to our land on the condition that we have an exclusive contract with the Fist. We need to know that there is no conflict of interest and that OUR needs are put first".

Bruvag shakes his head to Anna and flatly refuses her idea. "No. I will not allow it".

He then says something in giant. The griffons and hawkmen eye him suspiciously.
IF you speak Giant (which I think Trayvin does)... Highlight to display spoiler: {"Many of our kin wouldn't be accommodating of your presence. It would be in both our interests if you stayed away for now."}

Hemera puffs out her chest and nods to Michael. "We have nothing to hide. The Fist would be welcome on our lands to see for themselves what these others are up to" She eyes each of the other delegates.

Then comes the suggestion of breaking into separate groups for further discussions. Ceres and Hemera look to each other. Once Ceres gives the nod, Hemera speaks "We would be happy to speak with Anna and Michael privately"

With the griffons accepting the offer the giants are quick to do the same. "We would speak with the taur" Bruvag looks to Sigvar "He understands us". Dludnar sits quietly, having not been consulted.
Sense Motive DC20... Highlight to display spoiler: {Based on the way these two have been looking at Tinker you get the sense they perhaps don't entirely, well, like him. It could be because he's a dwarf, or perhaps that he brought fire to the party}

when they get someplace private, either outside or in one of pru's mansions. (can the mansion make Horse Tartar? ). Michael gets down to business.

Thank you for choosing to speak with me, I noticed something during the negotiations back in the other room. Both the giants and the hawkmen were aggressive towards you. I find that interesting. this does not seem to me to be a three-way but more of a two-on-one situation. I may have a solution that can work out to your benefit.

Three ways are unstable. two will always unite against one. and what those two might be thinking is that if they can unite to destroy you, then the other will be weak enough to be destroyed later. I think we should give them what they want and let them destroy each other. meanwhile, you can bring your pride here to the Citadel, we will see to your needs while you are here, you are free to come and go as you please. When those two Knuckleheads destroy each other you can go back, mop up the survivors, and reclaim your mountain.
What's the catch?
I am glad you asked,
While you are here I am going to try my level best to convince you that the Malied Fist is a home for you, a place where you can be protected, adored and participate in some important work. If I fail to convince you, it's alright. I would only want you to stay if it was what you wanted. While you are here though I'd like to see if perhaps we could learn to work together, get to know your pride and you get to know us.

I know it's a lot to take in, but the way things stand right now, the three groups are unknowns. Yours has been the most forthcoming, and I know what it means for a griffon to allow an outsider into their lair. but that's not going to be enough for us to exterminate a tribe of giants or an aeire of Hawkmen, and I can tell you right now that their obstinance is not going to win them any favor either.
so what you are looking at is going back to the way things were, the giants and the hawkmen slowly pushing you out.

The party split up to meet with the groups separately. Fortunately they have that telepathic link to share all the details with each other instantly. The group discuss separate rooms, using the mansion, and such. Whatever they choose, the meetings proceed.

Pompous and Pru are free to join in any meetings of their choice. It probably wasn't that the delegates were being rude. They just had preferences not exclusions.

~.~ The Griffons ~.~

Anna and Michael go to speak with the griffons. They don't seem too concerned whether they speak in their rooms, in a mansion, or on the roof in the open air. Michael makes them an offer for coming to stay at the Citadel, whether on a temporary or permanent basis. A lot of what he says makes sense.

"While I appreciate the offer it isn't one we can accept. We came here looking for help to protect our homes, not help with an evacuation." Hemera is polite in her response "The mountain has been home to our race for many, many generations and we won't give it up without a fight. I'm sure you understand."

Ceres already has his plan worked out. "We cannot back down to these brutes. If we do they will know they can do it again. If that means we need to strike at the Frost Giants to get them to stop this nonsense then that is what we must do. With the Frost Giants out of the way the other giants will take over their territory. Those ones I imagine would not become the servants of the hawkmen and we'd have solved our problem."

You're starting to get a real sense of the personalities here. Hemera is certainly trying to play the calm diplomat whereas Ceres is passionate and a griffon of action.

"Hopefully it won't come to that". Hemera is still optimistic. "Our offer stands. Come with us. See the problem for yourselves. Then, if you are able to provide us aid, we can discuss an alliance".

~.~ The Giants ~.~

Nikolai gives the giants something to think about. "They'll freeze before we do" Dludnar responds angrily. Bruvag shakes his head a little and grumbles.
IF you speak giant... Highlight to display spoiler: {"Hold your tongue. They already think us guilty"}

Whatever was said is enough for Dludnar to cross his arms and slump into his chair.

Sigvar first addresses his Cadre and gives them specific instructions to only use force - non-lethal at that - as a last resort.

Trayvin and Sigvar are to meet with the giants in the morning. Though since the other meetings are taking place now it is up to the pair if they'd rather meet now as well.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

Tinker and Nikolai agree to speak with the Hawkmen.

Away from the other groups the hawkmen are far less confrontational.

"Grievances? Of course." Doralle takes a deep breath and shakes his head. "They have colluded to disrupt the weather. The giants no doubt did this at the encouragement of the beasts."

Soliphis then speaks calmly. "We've seen them. The beasts circling in the skies above us. They think we don't see them, but we do. There is no physical evidence I can provide to support this other than my word and I would say as such under a truth spell."

Doralle continues "Then they go and fly off towards the giants, no doubt reporting what they saw. They are working together against us. Like I said, they know that the cold affects us the most. It's the perfect weapon and we have no means to fight back against it."

Soliphis tries to explain their position further. "We have families that are freezing. Food is becoming scarce. We didn't ask for this to happen. We need help. We need you to stop them."

She then says, "I mean I can understand the reasoning in associating the cold with the giants as they are frost giants meaning they like the cold, but how do the Hawkmen fair in the cold? They don't have the fur or the feathers you do nor the affinity for cold the giants do and as you said yourself game has become scarce. If the Hawkmen and the Giants have an alliance against you and the giants are controlling the cold why would they ease it up on the Hawkmen? Surely to the giants having the mountain to themselves would be superior to sharing it? Is it possible you have read the situation wrong and the hawkmen are victims of the cold too, whether it is being caused by the giants or not? Don't get me wrong I do want to go to your home and investigate the coldness and hopefully find a way to stop it and peacefully resolve your situation but as an outsider I'm just trying to understand everything that is going on."

She continues, "I also hope you are not offended in me asking this as I can communicate with any magical beast per the gift Queen Ma'ab gave me, but how is it you are able to speak the common tongue? You speak it quite well by the way, but I had thought that griffons didn't have the physiology to speak. As his cadre disperses and moves to their duties.
Sigvar sighs, it has been a long busy day, but the reports flowing in from the other Knight Commanders show the day is not done. Listening to their reports he understands that the cold is crippling and though the non giant races are holding out for now, their plight is becoming desperate. He needs to move this meeting up to now.
He contacts Trayvin and Prudence and asks them to meet him before the meeting. Trayvin because he was willing to meet with the giants as well an Prudence because she can help him understand the giants better. Offering her his lesser rod of extend spell the Taur asks Prudence if she would be able to cast an extended tongues spell on him so that the giants, who seem to be prone to speaking to each other in Giantish will be more understandable. Ready now he heads to the giant's quarters and knocks on their door.
Assuming they are willing to meet he steps inside and addresses them. " Thank you for meeting with me earlier than I had said. The other Knight Commanders have already begun their meetings and in the spirit of resolving this issue as quickly as possible I have decided that we also should meet now. Again I apologize for any inconvenience. Outside your door is one of my personally trained soldiers, Erika." Sigvar gestures toward the statuesque and heavily armored Minotaur standing at parade rest outside the Giant's door. ( careful readers will remember her from the party when the Knight Commanders were promoted) " She and others of my personal cadre will be seeing to security for the delegates going forward. I have a few questions for you that will help me understand the issues you are having and help me determine if the Mailed Fist will take a contract to help your people personally or if we will be working for the inhabitants of Mount Shadow as a whole. Allow me to ask them and then you can answer and present questions of your own. Fair? Good, these are the things I wish to know, My friend Trayvin may also have questions."
"What is going on on Mount Shadow? The other delegates mentioned a sudden and profound cold wave has been happening and since your folk are immune to the effects of the COLD they blame you. I have gathered from you defensiveness that you too are suffering from this effect. My assumption is that while the cold does not hamper you, the food that you hunt and gather is not so lucky. Please explain to me what is happening and how it affects your people."
" You may have guessed my thoughts on this, but for the sake of completeness I will ask, Are your people the cause of this sudden cold?"
"Do you know who is responsible and do you have any proof you can present?"
" What other peoples live on the mountain ( other races not represented here)?"
" What, specifically, do you want the Mailed Fist to do for you on the Mountain?"
"What questions do you have for Trayvin and myself?"

Sigvar is doing his best to be understanding and diplomatic. From what the other KC's are sending him people are dying and there is general overall hardship on the mountain. He actually does not believe the giants to be the cause. So far the rest of the Kc's have been at best indifferent to the giants, following the stereotypes set out by Lore in the Wold about the giant races. Sigvar senses no evil in these delegates and wishes to get their genuine answers without the taint of lore. He projects himself and interested in their words and eager to come to a resolution of this problem.

First things first. Pru creates a Magnificent Mansion for each delegation. Each Mansion consists largely of a grand, open meeting space, although each Mansion also has two appropriately-sized bedchambers in case the delegates would prefer to sleep there.

The griffons' Mansion has a lot of natural wood in the interiors, along with large picture windows and skylights.

The giants' Mansion has a lot of stone in the interiors, although the furniture is comfortable.

The interior of the hawkmen's Mansion is decorated with airy, geometric designs.

All of the Mansions have windows overlooking mountain scenes. Not Shadow Mountain--Pru has never been there--but mountains in general. And of course, all of the Mansions can only be designed and created to the best of Pru's ability. She is not a griffin, or a giant, or a hawkman, and can only guess at what they might like.

Sigvar requests spellcasting, but "I'm really sorry, Sigvar, but I don't know how to cast the Tongues spell. And the rod won't help me cast a spell I don't know. The giants do speak Common, but if it's important I can go to the Catacombs and get a scroll."

If she has time to attend one of the one-on-one meetings, Pru meets with the hawkmen. That's where Nikolai is, after all.

He'll dispatch some missives ordering that the guards be doubled and eye kept peeled to the skies.

He knows that not every situation is black or white, good or bad. Sometimes it's a matter of perspectives. The needs of one does not always mesh with the needs of the others.

He know that the Fists are not just common mercernaries to be hired by the highest bidder... but they are still mercenaries and a contract IS a contract.

Nikolai is glad to be inside the Mansion for the hawkmen and out of sight of the others. The confrontational atmosphere was starting to get him riled up and now he can simmer down and focus his thoughts.
Tinker, the Strategist, follows and Nikolai sighs with relief. The Monk turned 1st level Diplomat now summons some Mansion servants and asks the Hawkmen what their favored refreshments are and has the servants bring plenty of it.

The Hawkmen answer Nikolai and Tinker makes a good point.

"I agree with Tinker. Whereas in most cases we would select the proper Fist contingent to address the issue presented us, in this case we would be putting them in the same cold situation as your people are in to keep the peace. And that's all they would be able to do, keep the peace. But a handful of Specialists, equipped to withstand the cold, is what you need.

But before we get into a contract, I would like to know what your backup plan is. It is quite evident that neither of the three of you will give up their homes without a fight. But a smart leader will prepare a plan in case the fight goes against them. Giving up your homes is one thing, giving up your race is another. Homes can be replaced, your people can't be. You need to have a place you can take your young ones to before it gets too cold for them. It's just the smart thing to do, be prepared.

So, let's start with your home. Tell me all about your home. The Mountain. The weather in each season. The peaks. And detail as best you can when this cold started and did it start from the peaks and flow down or just start getting cold all over at once.

I also want you to think back to when you first noticed the Griffons spying on you. I may be wrong, but my guess is that all three of you have been actively spying on each other since the first generation of your peoples came to the mountain. A wise leader will always want to keep an eye on his neighbors, friendly or not."

Tinker holds off on talking contracts to back up Nikolai’s play. He thinks to his teammates, telling them what’s going on in the Hawkmen talks. I think we need to get them each to agree to hire a team of Specialists, and the measure of success is a return to the status quo. A rider for a patrol to ensure the peace would be great for a longtime rider on the contract, but not necessary. Anna says to the Griffons, "Before we go anywhere, though my fellow knight commanders are after getting you to sign a contract where we would send a team of specialists out to your mountain and the conditions for success are a return to the pre-cold status quo on your mountain. I guess my question on that is in your opinion what were the boundaries of each group's territory prior to the cold sinking in? Bear in mind my fellow knight commanders are asking the other groups the same question and if your group and the other groups have differing views of what consitutes the status quo then we would like the contract to specify that the Mailed Fist determines the pre-cold borders. I am hoping that you and the others are all in agreement on the borders as I would prefer to have the Fists only interest in the matter of solving the cold as I meant what I said about wanting to avert a war. Border disputes can cause conflict."

~.~ The Griffons ~.~

The griffons are quite impressed by the lodging that Pru provides. Herema shakes out her feathers and gets comfortable before they start responding to Anna's questions.

"The cold started perhaps two months ago. It was very gradual. We thought it might have been seasonal, but it's getting worse every day." Hemera explains

Ceres then has his 2c "It's not natural."

"No, it isn't" Hemera continues "We believe the giants and hawkmen have joined forces. The Frost Giants obviously like the cold. We believe the hawkmen discovered how to change the weather and in exchange for the Frost Giants doing it and driving us from the mountain that they would share what remained."

"You must know the reputation of the Frist Giants. Evil, evil creatures" Ceres mutters.

Anna points out the hawkmen's susceptibility to the cold. The griffons pause for a moment in consideration.

Ceres has a thought. "Perhaps it's a waiting game? They think they can outlast us? That could be it. Once we're gone the weather goes back to normal. A short period of suffering for a long term gain."

Anna then very tactfully touches on the fact that these two can talk. How is that?

Ceres puffs out his chest. "Our bloodline has been gifted with things our brethren have not. All can understand you, but it's only we who can speak. It's one of the reasons that we take on the leadership of the prides"

Finally the topic of a contract.

"The boundaries are quite clear but never formally agreed I suppose. The North Slopes have always been our home. The Frost Giants have the East Slopes, though they must share it with other giant tribes. The Hawkmen have the South. That is the way it has always been. There is no disputing these."

~.~ The Giants ~.~

The giants enter the mansion and take in the surrounds. "No food?" Dludnar asks as he looks about. Bruvag sighs loudly.

At the introduction of Erika neither giant shows any sign of being impressed or thankful. "We can take care of ourselves if any of those bird brains get any ideas" Dludnar responds as he starts poking and prodding around the room trying to find out where the larder is.

Sigvar offers to remove any fatigue from the giants but they shy away from the idea of the taur touching them.

Finally Trayvin's order of food arrives. "Now that's what I'm talking about" Dludnar approaches but is pushed aside by Bruvag. He has a look to work out which plate has more food on it then leaves the other for Dludnar.

Sigvar fires off the questions.

"Direct. I like it" Bruvag responds and settles into the chair. He takes a giant size bite out of a side of mutton. "Right. Here it is. We're being framed. We didn't cause all the cold, though we do give thanks to Frethja for it. She's certainly made things better for us."

"You're right about the food though. Things are getting pretty scarce and while those lots have their own slopes, we have to share ours and that means even less food!" Dludnar has started digging in to his meal.

Bruvag takes the lead again. "Who else is on the mountain? That's a long list. We've got all the different giant clans on our slope. No idea what else is on the North or South slope. We keep away from there you see. Not sure what's up the West Slope. That's the whole other side of the mountain. Far as we know some Lord Thingo has built himself somewhere comfortable round the base"

"Far as what we want from you? Easy. We don't want you to work with the griffons and hawkmen. They came here to get your help to attack us by spouting some lies about us doing something. We didn't do anything! Fighting you lot off would open us to attack from those dumb stone giants."

Dludnar stretches and smiles, his face covered in meat juices. "Reckon we could beat you one at a time. Just not at the same time."

Bruvag glares at him "BUT we don't want to fight at all. We don't want a war. Leave us out of it."

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

Doralle and Soliphis look about the mansion. They are most taken by the window and stand near it, looking out over the illusion. The food and drink they ask for is quite simple. Rabbits, quail, any small game really. For drinks it is just water and mild ale.

It certainly helps them relax a little more.

"The mountain." Doralle leans against the window frame. "It's beautiful. The fresh air, the clouds above and the ground below. I don't know what else to tell you. It's the most majestic place in the Wold". Ok, he might not get out much but it's still a really nice place.

He seems lost in thought now so Soliphis continues. "We were just coming out of winter. Things had started to warm and then it just went colder again. Two maybe three months ago? It's been getting steadily colder, not just a snap freeze or anything like that"

Doralle comes back to the present. "The beasts have been spying on us for as long as I can remember. Always flying around. Our plan was to come here for your aid in stopping them. Surely you know the frost giants would want this. They must be behind it. We need your help to stop them."

"As for what to do if the fight goes against us, as you said. Well, I'm not sure. I don't want it to get that far. If you are unable to help us then we will reach out to other allies and organizations for aid. Surely someone can stop them. Stop THIS. I won't let my people down. I won't be remembered as the Hawkman who lost his people the sky." His anger is clearly visible now. If he were back in the room with the other representatives this would be when things came to blows. "I WILL find a way to save us."

Through the link he asks Trayvin if he recognizes the name.
Sigvar also sends the words of the giants through the mental link. He is not happy with what he hears. Tactically it is a sound idea. Take advantage of the growing cold to weaken your foes and then take what they cannot hold. Realistically this means that the giants will also eventually stave if they are not in control of the growing cold.
" I know what the other Knight Commanders are discussing and us being hired by you to sit by and watch the other two races starve and freeze to death is not part of the plan."
" In my opinion that is a coldly evil act and I would not recommend it in any case. I also find it to be a foolishly short sighted plan, since eventually the food sources you rely on will freeze to death or migrate away leaving you the victors, but also doomed to a slow death by starvation."

Sigvar is, as always, prepared for violence. He is aware that his words are probably not about to be well received, but he is here to negotiate with the giants and he feels they have a better chance of coming to an agreement if they know where they stand.
" I would offer you an alternative. Hire a team of specialists from the Fist to determine from where and for what reason this cold snap has settled into your homeland and put a stop to it, thus returning your homes to the status quo that they enjoyed before this cold snap began. Return to the previously established boundaries of your lands."

Nikolai noted that the hawkmen avoided saying anything about their spying efforts.
"Having to leave your homeland would be a last option to save your young ones. But it is wise to have that planned out just in case. Pru is right in that the best option is finding out what is the true cause first, as that will most likely prevent much bloodshed. And as Tinker suggested, hiring a team of specialists is the best option. Naturally, the Griffons and the Frost Giants will want to hire at team themselves as well. They know the Mailed Fist honors their contracts, so each team is bound to work for the best interest of their employers. However the Mailed Fist will not fight each other. We will not hire out to fight your wars. At least not until we find out the true cause of this change in weather.

Any contract, on either side, will be specific in that if hostilities were to break out between any of the Parties, then all three contracts will be voided and the Mailed Fist leaves.

But tell, me more about the mountain. Doesn't this mountain have more than three sides? What's on the west slope and how's the cold affecting them? Why aren't those residents represented here as well?"

Anna says to the Griffons, "I know you offered to have us out and take a look around then discuss an alliance as an alternative would you accept a team of investigators as Michael stipulated. The goal as we've discussed previously would be to get to the pre-cold status quo and keep the peace between your peoples. If hostilities did break out all active contracts between any and all parties would have to be void. Our other knight commanders are having similar discussions with the Hawkmen and the Giants. We are sympathetic to your plight and as a neutral party are looking to avert war. Considering it wasn't possible for all three groups to collectively agree to a single contract it seems we have to make seperate arrangements with each group. I know that this isn't exactly what you had in mind, but we are trying to help. Also there is one last thing and I mean no offense but it seems like your scouting activities have set some of the other groups on edge. In the interest of keeping the peace, while our investigators are active I don't suppose there is any way you could try to limit flight activity to your territory? Our people will get to the bottom of this and in the event that either the Hawkmen or the giants are found to be the responsible party they will be held accountable. However if the cause is something else we will also deal with that. Does that sound agreeable?"

Pompous keeps an eye on all three meetings and wanders between them. From what he can see, the griffons appear quite calm and eager to receive assistance. The hawkmen are deep in thought. They will likely only agree to a contract that specifically benefits them. He observes that Bruvag is the more diplomatic of the giants and seems the more 'senior' of the pair. Dludnar is likely his right-hand man.

~.~ The Griffons ~.~

Michael asks about the western sloper. Hemera nods. "Lord Whatnot, yes. His area is near the lower regions of the mountain. I can't say we've ever had much dealing with him. We don't tend to venture that low, nor into his territory."

Anna asks - very politely - for the griffons to stay away from the giants and hawkmen for the time being. There is a pause as Hemera and Ceres both contemplate the request. They nod to each other and Hemera continues "We will instruct our kin to try and minimize the time they spend near the other slopes. It cannot be avoided entirely, but in the interest of peace we will agree to this term."

Ceres gets to the point "How soon can you come?"

~.~ The Giants ~.~

Trayvin has never heard of Frethja before but Sigvar remembers overhearing a snippet. As far as he recalls, Frethja is a vast glacier covering parts of the North and East slopes of Shadow Mountain. Her Immortal Power, also called Frethja, is honored by the Frost Giants and acknowledged by all sentient races on the mountain.

Bruvag exhales so deeply it comes close to a growl. "What I said was we came here to stop you from allying with them to fight us. If you want to help them, go right ahead, but don't expect us to help them. They allied and came here to contract you to join a fight against us. Isn't that right? Why should we aid those that are already planning and recruiting to attack us? If you ask me, waging a war against innocent people is a coldly evil act. I trust your other Knight Commanders have taken that position and that you aren't just discriminating against us."

"As for being shortsighted about our food sources, I disagree. When the others leave the mountain we'll be able use what resources we find on those slopes and trade for food if we have to. I'm sure we'll be fine. If the other giants blame us for some reason, then we can move and have a slope of our own."

Dludnar sucks the last bit of meat off a bone "Not a bad idea that. A place of our own"

Bruvag shakes his head to Sigvar. "We've no intention of contracting with you. We came here to stop an ill-conceived, pointless war, and to be left in peace."

Dludnar tosses the bone he'd been chewing over his shoulder as the next course of food is brought in. Giants aren't particularly well know for having good table manners.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

Tinker, Pru and Nikolai keep up their talks with the hawkmen.

Soliphis shrugs. "The west slope? That lot mainly stick to the low regions, so I hear. The cold hasn't reached far enough down the mountain yet to probably be of concern to them. I'm not sure they're even aware of it."

Pru is perhaps the most diplomatic of the party. The hawkmen look more at ease with her there, and start to open up a little more.

"Well, they might be aware of the teleportation issue." Doralle adds, and no doubt seeing the surprise on your faces, explains further. "We're not sure when it first started but we're pretty sure it was shortly after the weather turned. None of our teleportation spells work on the mountain. Not being able to fly it was useful for our mages to be able to travel to different destinations, not to mention for our hunters to quickly return to the aeries. Now though, it's like we're locked down. We can teleport to get off it, but not onto it."

Soliphis adds "The beasts and giants don't teleport as our mages do. We're not sure they even know how to. It's possible they aren't aware of the impact to us. If they were to learn of it then it would severely weaken our position. The giants enjoy the cold, while the beasts enjoy the mobility that flying provides them. We're the losers all around."

Doralle and Soliphis consider the current situation and the suggestions put forward. They seem mildly in agreement with what is being said so far, though Doralle now has questions for the party.

"I do have some questions first. Will the terms of any contracts be shared with the others? For instance, if we agree to a contract with you, will the wording and knowledge of the contract be shared with the beasts and giants? Is there a way we can exclusively contract with you? Finally, is this intended just to be an exploratory contract, or will military aid and numbers also be provided to enforce our borders and skies? I would also presume that agreeing to a contract with you does not preclude us from contracting with other organizations."

The other is considering it. Should we find it do you wish for us to leave it in place on your slope? That would make it increasingly cold on your slope while the others will return to their seasonal norm. I mean that would be only fair since they hired us to do something about it while you elected to let it continue, right?"
"Very good then. I have sent your sentiments to the other Knight Commanders and I see no need to waste my time talking to you if you are only a spoiler sent here to thwart others in their attempt to help their kin. That is not how we work and you should have known from the Fist's reputation."

"Hold on a minute. Pru is correct in that ALL our contracts are confidential. But, you make a deal with us only or no deal. And that goes for the other two as well."

Nikolai pauses just for a moment. He's getting information from the other teams and is trying to sort through everything.

"For example. It might make sense that you hire another team to guard your borders and the Mailed Fist to look for and deal with the cause. I've already said the Mailed Fist won't fight a war for you against the others, so, another mercenary group may be the answer.
But that also means the Griffons will do the same. Now the Giants came here to prevent either of you two hiring anyone! So they'll hire a mercenary group too or antagonize the ones you've hired.

Now you'll have possibly three mercenary groups that won't care about discovering the source and not have a problem with a good ol' fight. Which leaves the Mailed Fist not only trying to find the cause of the cold, but also trying to keep the peace between Frost Giants, Griffons, Hawkmen, and three other mercenary groups. That's a quagmire the Mailed Fist will NOT sink their boots into.

At least with the Mailed Fist you know our goal is to keep all three sides in their own homelands without bloodshed."

Nikolai hopes that the cessation of talks with the giants is a bluff but he would not be surprised if indeed the giants are done.

"Now, do you want us to continue? Are you sure the west slope is a detached from all this as you think? Since you know so little of that side, couldn't it be possible some creature with great power, such as a Greater Ice Elemental, or Cold Demon, or powerful Elemental Sorcerer has moved in? It would be easy if that side had very little opposition. And the teleportation problem bothers me. It keeps you from teleporting over there to find out what is going on. The Griffons, flying, would be seen in time to warn the Whatever and hide, and the Frost Giants are too far away. You, though, pose the greater threat of discovery.

Think on that."

Through the link he postulates {'The Giants get what they want if a Specialist Team is hired as they would not expect that one Team constitutes the military force the others were expecting. And if payed for by all three, then they can feel part of the negotiations and the Mailed Fist won't play favorites with the ones with the cash.'}

The giants and Fist look almost in agreement.

"If you're able to leave things as they are now? Hmmm..." Bruvag contemplates the idea while Dludnar starts digging in to the second course of meat. "If you can keep things as they are now, then we'd be for it I suppose."

Sigvar then comments on the giants motives.

Bruvag throws his hands up in the air in exasperation. "'A spoiler sent here to thwart others in their attempt to help their kin'? Your words need no twisting! Didn't hear me?! Doralle nods. "I suppose we could compromise and agree to the existence of the contract being public knowledge"

The hawkmen get some confictling advice from the Knight Commanders. Since the Fist can contract with more than one party, Pru is happy to allow the Hawkmen to as well. Nikolai and Tinker have other ideas.

"So you won't provide an exclusive contract with us, but you want us to have an exclusive contract with you?" Soliphis doesn't look impressed by this.

Doralle slowly paces and then responds. "If you're prepared to meet all of our conditions then that would be acceptable. If you can't agree to all of these then we would need to be able to contract an additional group who could 'fill in the gaps', so to speak."

Doralle then lays out the terms he wishes in the contract:
1. The terms of the contract are to remain secret
2. Investigating the source of the cold weather
3. Correcting the weather back to what it should be
4. Provision of food and medical supplies until the weather can be corrected. Ongoing costs to be determined based on market value.
5. Military forces to deal with intruders to their lands (and skies)
5a. Where possible, intruders are to be captured and handed over to the hawkmen
5b. Where intruders cannot be captured they are to be treated as hostiles and eliminated.
6. Military strikes against whichever race is found to be responsible
6a. Strikes are to continue until the race responsible either leaves the mountain or unconditionally surrenders to the hawkmen
7. Any information gathered about the hawkmen during the course of this contract is to remain secret

"If you can't agree with all of these or allow us to contract out to other parties, then I understand and bear you no ill will. We will take our leave in the morning."

"Hold on." Soliphis interjects. "What have the others decided to do?"

”5 and 5a are also not a problem, standard contract. 5b and 6 only if we turn ‘race’ into ‘whoever is’. And if they don’t agree to that, I think you let them off the hook to being an exclusive contract with the Fist. Kingdoms fight wars including hiring multiple mercenary units. The Fist isn’t big enough (and too expensive) to force kingdoms to do everything our way. They consider themselves a kingdom, let’s treat ‘em like a kingdom.”

Nikolai does not like the idea of committing a large military force for one side. They'll have to commit two large forces to buffer the Hawkmen and Griffon borders. At least the Giants don't really want anyone.

"What you have here are basically two contracts. One contract to find the true source of the cold, whether it be from outside the influence of any of the other two or collusion with any of the other two, while keeping the peace. A second contract to wage war against the guilty party, presuming it is one or both of the other two, if they don't comply to reparations.

Let's deal with the first contract, as the second one might be superfluous.
1. The terms of the contract are to remain secret

Some of the terms are going to have to be communicated to the others. I'm sure the Griffons will want to know what the penalties will be if they send some scouts into your territory.

2. Investigating the source of the cold weather.
That's the main purpose here.

3. Correcting the weather back to what it should be
There are no guarantees here. If the Wold is changing, we can't fight that. Nor are we going to fight a god. But we promise to do our best.

4. Provision of food and medical supplies until the weather can be corrected. Ongoing costs to be determined based on market value.
This can be easily arranged.

5. Military forces to deal with intruders to their lands (and skies).
We can set up a buffer zone along the boundaries and sent up patrols. Mind you, the Griffons may want the same thing. Not a problem if the patrols are all members of the Mailed Fist. They will not play favorites and will report the truth.

5a. Where possible, intruders are to be captured and handed over to the hawkmen.
I suggest that any captured intruders be held at the Citadel. It is neutral territory, and if some ill were to come to the captured ones, the Mailed Fist will take responsibility and you won't be blamed, thus preventing any further hostilities.

5b. Where intruders cannot be captured they are to be treated as hostiles and eliminated.
The Griffons and Giants will need to know your sentiments on this, but it will be our decision as to how we go about dealing with intruders. Before any intruders are 'eliminated', the consequences of such intrusion will need to be made quite clear to the offending parties.

Let's get this first contract agreed upon before we go into what to do if one or both the others are found to be colluding with changing the climate on the mountain. Such evidence will have to be presented to a tribunal with all parties present. The Tribunal should be Neutral, and not the Mailed Fist. We'll get into that once the first contract is agreed upon.

Now, as far as the details, it will be a good idea that the other Knight Commanders know, since they are also working on contracts with the Griffons and Giants. It will do no good for any two contracts to contradict each other."

Nikolai lets the Hawkmen think on this and looks at Pru and Tinker for any improvements or adjustments.

They said they will minimize it, but I'm worried about the agressive stance the Hawkmen seem intent on taking with their border considering I think I did the best I could with the griffons on this. I don't know how we can communicate this to the Hawkmen or if they'd even be willing to listen to things from the griffon perspective right now but I can see the potential for further tensions.

Hemera gives a nod of acknowledgement to Anna. "That sounds correct. As long as we both agree to act in good faith I don't think any other specifics need to be added. The Fist have a reputation for being fair, and though there may not be a specific condition in the contract for a given situation, I'm sure we can agree to handle things as they arise."

Trayvin is happy to leave the giants to their food. Dealings with them have come to a close.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

Pru and Tinker are inclined to agree to most of the terms that the hawkmen has proposed. Not all though, and Nikolai gives some explanation as well as counter proposals.

Doralle shakes his head to Nikolai's amendments. "I'm afraid I can't accept those changes. I've spelled out our position and the terms we require. If the Fist can agree to those terms, fantastic. Let's proceed to draw up a contract. If you cannot agree to all of them, that's where we'll have a problem. Either we can contract out to another party to take care of those for us, or we part on good terms here."

"I think Nikolai's modifications to your fifth point are reasonable," Pru says. "Which only leaves your sixth point unresolved.

"Let us suppose,"
she continues, "that we sign a contract along the lines Nikolai has laid out. And let us suppose that one of the other races is found to be responsible. That first contract will effectively be completed. We can then sign a second contract dealing with punishing the offenders. And we'll both be in a better position to negotiate that contract, since we'll have a better understanding of the situation.

"So perhaps,"
she concludes, "what we want is some kind of option clause, rather than making punishment part of the initial contract. I really think that's better for everyone."

If we are to have a contract that stipulates military action, we will need to agree upon a price. But that Price is indeterminate since we don't know if one or both other parties are involved, or neither. Obviously the price will be much higher if both are involved. Obviously, if neither are involved, it would be unfair for you to pay the full price to deal with the culprit.

You see how convoluted and complicated a contract that includes all your conditions will get?
Mind you, we can put together very, very, complicated contracts, but only as a last option. The three of us here will bring your accepted final copy of your conditions to the rest of the Team. As a Team we will discuss them and make a decision."

You might also offer the griffions food and warmth imported to them while we work to avoid their need to hunt and possibly stray over hawk territory. There may be more than one reason the Hawk lady doesn't like me and I am not certain it all applies to my casual check for evil over all of them. {I don't like the specifics either, or the possibility of someone else's screwup force us into a war,} Nikolai sends to Tinker and the others.

"I don't think you are considering the ramifications of your conditions. Suppose the Griffons and Giants have the same clauses? Capture and possibly kill all those that are 'found' to be in their territory? Like you perhaps?

Ok, if the Mailed Fist team working for the Griffons catch a hawkman on their side, the Griffons can execute him, no trial. That would be all right with you? What would that be promoting? How would that affect your lives when this cold issue is resolved?

Right now you mistrust the other two but you are not at war, yet. These conditions, 5 through 6, could possibly bring about the war we are trying to avoid.

At this time, the Mailed Fist must remain impartial and withhold any military forces for anyone unless it is to patrol the borders and only that. We will not commit any military force until we discover the source of this unnatural cold.

You have our guarantee that the Mailed Fist will keep everyone out of the border buffer zones, but if you insist on hiring another military force before we find the truth, fine, but the Mailed Fist will not be held responsible for any hostilities brought about through their actions.

{I think it is time for all of us to get our heads together and let each party, specifically the Hawkmen, mule over their conditions. Let us adjourn and we can all meet the Hawkmen together on the morrow.} Nikolai sends through the link.

He addresses the Hawkmen again. [b]"Don't get us wrong. We have taken a keen interest in this mystery and we will be relentless in the pursuit of the truth. In order to prove the Giants are innocent or guilty, we will need an investigative team on their side of the mountain, the same with the Griffons. We need to be able to move about freely on all four sides of the mountain. However, your conditions 5, 5a, 5b, 6 and 6a are Totalitarian and I can guarantee the other two will balk and, accusing the Mailed Fist of playing favorites, will exclude us from any investigations on their side.

Think on this and we will meet back tomorrow to discuss this further."

"Hmm. No. I hadn't heard of them or that situation." Hemera respond to Michael. "Are there often problems with former Fist members?"

Ceres looks to Anna and Michael for a response.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

The party have some serious concerns about the terms the hawkmen want on the contract. Pru and Nikolai make a few suggestions. A two part contract or perhaps even two separate ones?

Doralle shakes his head. "The griffons and giants venture further and further into our lands even as we speak. We don't know how long this investigation would last, so would require a military force on our borders and in our skies to stop their invasion now."

Sigvar has a few ideas. The hawkmen either agree or they don't, but don't expect the Fist to cater to their whims. He does have an idea about providing additional support to the griffons - more than they have currently asked for but could no doubt use.

Tinker tries to try and find a middle ground but the specifics being asked for by Doralle give him concern.

Nikolai then brings up a few good points.

Soliphis places her hands on her hips. "A hawkman found - let alone captured - on the griffon slopes? How would that happen? We'd have to venture on foot through either the east or west slope to get to the north slope. We can't fly or teleport. We're stranded. There's no way we could spy on them even if we wanted to."

Doralle places his hand on her shoulder before addressing some of Nikolai's other points. "You might convince the brutes and beasts here to agree to stay on their own territories, but do all of their kind listen to them? Giants aren't well known for getting along. What if a small group of them don't listen and come onto our lands anyway? We would have them captured so we can question them."

"As for the conditions, they would only balk at them if they were made aware of them, and only then, if you had contracts with them as well as I understand it." Doralle then has a thought. "If we were to hire another military force, could we include terms in this contract that ensures you will not get in their way?"

Trayvin and Anna are looking right about the hawkmen being demanding.

Nikolai thinks now might be a good time to call it a day. Perhaps after a good nights rest some progress will be made.

Anna relays the stipulated terms of the conditions of the griffon contract to the rest of the commanders, We would send a team of specialists out to investigate the source of the cold and try to get things back to the pre-cold conditions. Additionally while we are there the griffons agree to lessen their flight activities into other territories. As I've previously stipulated I don't think this can be avoided entirely and if the hawkmen get their contract with either us or another military force, at some point a griffon may venture too close and that could set things off. I am not sure what to do about the hawkmen as they seem pretty insistant about being able to enforce their border

Anna says to the griffons, "That was an unfortunate and unusual situation. The Knight Commander at the time got delusions of grandieur and thought he could conquer a neighboring country. Those of us who had no interest in aspirations of Woldian domination put a stop to him but it cost us. Michael, Nikolai, Trayvin, Pompous, Sigvar, Tinker, Prudence and myself are all Knight Commanders now and we are in agreement that the way Neutronis went was wrong. Michael replies to Hemera,
No. For all of its history, the Mailed fist has fought with Honor, Dignity, and Good, but in any endeavor that goes on long enough there is bound to be a bad member that gets in everyone in a while. Normally the Fist has rules and mechanisms in place to catch these aberrations before they can do too much damage.
You saw the courtyard when you came in. there is a spot off to the side we call "Traitors Square" it's where we hang the ones who break Fist rule. it does not happen often, but it does happen.

HIs name was Pavillon Neutronis, he was considered by many of us to be the best of us. He was strong, handsome, charismatic and a natural leader that all the Fist looked up to. He was ambitious, but until the Troubles, his ambition had been to make the Fist the best Mercenary force in all the World. When he contracted with Aisildur to do some work for them, we were impressed, Aisildur had been closed to any other military force for as long as there had been a Mailed Fist. When he claimed they didn't pay, and was going to attack and take one of their cities as recompense, it caused many problems.

You see part of our charter is that we do not attack to hold land. We have never held land, save for a space to bury our dead. but Pavillon was determend. We fought him and we hung him for being a murderous, traitor. It came out shortly before the battle that he had killed the messenger that was sent to bring him the fee.

It's the worst thing that ever happened to the Mailed Fist. It's also one of the reasons we have multiple Knight Commanders now instead of just one. We hope that by splitting the power up among us all it will ensure that nothing like this will happen again.

We'll capture any non-hawkmen that venture into your territory, but our condition is that they stay under Mailed Fist custody. And that goes for any hawkmen found wandering on non-hawkmen territory. That's a fair deal."

Nikolai bows and then exits the mansion.

Outside, Nikolai mutters to Tinker and Pru, "These hawkmen seem paranoid. We offer a deal to protect their borders and keep the others out but if their conditions were to be met in full, the others will certainly feel more threatened by US being there for sure. It can't end good."

To the group he shares his thoughts, {[I don't mind other mercenary groups being hired to patrol and protect the borders if they will guarantee our right to move about freely in our investigations. The night is uneventful. Everyone sleeps well. Your DM doesn't know if you sleep in a mansion or not while in the Citadel, so for tonight assumes you all have your own quarters that you are comfortable in.

Shortly after dawn Sigvar is woken by a loud rapping at his door. On answering he sees Erika standing at attention. "Sir, sorry for waking you but I have news of the giants. They're asking to leave the Citadel and return to their homes. How would you like me to proceed?". Erika fills him in on the events of the night. The giants remained in the mansion all night, requested food and ale twice, and did not harass anyone. The interior of the mansion is a mess (how did they get gravy on the ceiling?) and it's probably a good idea they weren't given proper lodgings.

Nikolai agrees with Trayvin's concern about the borders. "Before we start on this, we will need a map of the area, then each of the delegates, witnessed by all three, will need to mark on the map their borders. That's just for starters.

We technically only have two borders to really patrol. The North-East border and the East-South border. It might be good to know why the Griffons fly from the north side to the south side to spy on the Hawkmen. That's a long way. And do they fly across the west side or over the top?

So, two patrol groups and us, the Investigative Team.

How does everyone else feel about outside mercenary groups? The Hawkmen may insist on hiring one if they don't like the fact we aren't keen on all their conditions."

~.~ The Contracts ~.~

Tinker is sure to leave the draft contracts with Claire to look over. In the morning she finds him to relay her thoughts.

"Well, no contract is needed with the Frost Giants. They've chosen not to enter into a contract with us."

"The contract with the griffons looks quite straightforward. Did you want to set a timeframe on that contract though or will it run indefinitely?"

"The hawkmen contract is where things get interesting. It is already quite complex and I suspect unless everything is 100% air tight that they will find loopholes and be able to turn things in ways that may not have been intended."

~.~ The Griffons ~.~

Anna and Michael continue with the discussions with the griffons. The griffons seem happy to see the pair again. Michael lays out some high level terms.

It's Ceres that speaks. "You should be aware that we're here not just for our pride. We're here representing a great number, but we speak on their authorities."

"Those terms sound agreeable" Hemera nods.

~.~ The Giants ~.~

Sigvar makes his way over to see the giants in their mansion. He finds them standing outside the mansion, arms folded. They're not in a particularly great mood but they have been fed (again). "Can we get our weapons back now? We're ready to leave this place." Dludnar asks. They each came with greataxes and daggers, all of which were confiscated when they sought entry to the Citadel.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

The party are yet to meet the hawkmen. They want to get some agreement between themselves. What are the borders? The groups seem to agree that they each have their own slopes, at least that's what they've all been saying. Nikolai tries to work out some of the logistics.

Tinker dutifully reports what Chief Claire says about the contracts, and then gives his two cents. “I’m fine with just accepting the Griffon contract only. Defend Griffons and investigate the cause of the cold. It helps everyone, the Fist gets paid, and we don’t stick our head in a contract trap with the Hawkmen.”

The dwarf will do what the majority decide.

"Perhaps it would be best to only contract with the griffons," Pru says. "I mean, the hawkmen want mostly the same things, but they're all paranoid about the others. If we don't contract with them, they're free to hire some other group to patrol their lands. We just have to be careful not to run afoul of them."

You say you are representing more than just your tribe? That is important information that we need to be aware of. who all are you speaking for in this arrangement? it's not that it's a deal-breaker or anything, but knowing who all the players are in a theater of operations is a basic SOP for the Fist.

" How about offering some 'consultants' to the Hawkmen? No charge. Some eyes to confirm that they are not at fault here. Maybe do some recon for the Fists while they are at it. The consultants then come back and praise the Hawkmen for the honesty and honour. We get some good will with the Hawkmen and get some intelligence. Next time they come looking for mercs. we may be ameable to sign a contract. "

Nikolai thinks they are on the right track.
"It does appear we only need one contract, with the Griffons. We insure the Griffons won't go flying over to the Hawkmen side and that fulfills the wants of the Hawkmen without a bothersome contract. If they catch anyone else in their territory and dispose of them, it's not on our hands, but theirs.

As far as consultants, let's call it 'Embassies'. We get a minor contract to establish an embassy with all three. That allows us to communicate with the leaders of each with respect to our progress with our investigations and to allow us someone to keep an eye on things in each camp. The Embassies can either be temporary or permanent, as each side wishes."

~.~ The Griffons ~.~

Michael and Anna just want to make sure they have all the details before proceeding.

Ceres is the one who answers. "Including our own we represent eight prides, though there are others that have already left the mountain that we would speak for had they stayed."

Anna knows that there are typically 6-10 griffons in a single pride.

---------

The party discuss options to proceed. A contract with the griffons seems a near certainty with unanimous support from the party, but it's the hawkmen that are still the 'unknown' in this equation.

Pompous comes up with the idea of offering some consultants (to use his words) free of charge to the Hawkmen. Nikolai puts forward a different name - 'embassies' - and suggests a contract with all three might be beneficial. He may have a hard time of it with the giants already on the way out the door.

There is no word from the hawkmen themselves yet.

Anna says over the link, Yes Trayvin, that seems right. With respect to the Griffons Apparently we are entering into a contract with the 8 remaining prides on the mountain. That is roughly 48 to 80 griffons and there are others that left the mountain that I'm trying to see if they can be contacted to try Michael's idea

To the Griffons, Anna says, "I don't suppose you have a way to get in contact with the prides that left? I'm sure Michael's original offer of a safe haven here stands and if they left the mountain anyway even if lodging with us is a temporary arrangement at first until we fix things maybe some would be interested in staying on and joining the Mailed Fist proper?"

"The lands here are too low for them to be comfortable." Hemera explains. "They may have left the mountain though I hope it is only temporary. Most likely they have found some other peaks to settle on. Hopefully when the weather is returned to normal they will hear word and return home."

"Are we in agreement on the contract then?" Ceres asks hopefully, referring to the conditions put forward by Michael.

~.~ The Giants ~.~

Sigvar is happy to let the giants leave. He has their weapons brought to them and escorts them to the gate.

Assuming he relays Nikolais message... Dludnar snorts. "You want an embassy on the east slope, next to my house? Pfft. Not gonna happen. Like we keep saying, we didn't come here for any contracts and we're not going to be pressed to sign one now." The giants walk off, shaking their heads as they go. At least they go a free meal (or 5) out of it.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

Ah the hawkmen. There is still no clear and agreed path between the Knight Commanders. Sigvar and Tinker are inclined to just sign up with the griffons and keep things simple. No tricks or possible manipulation by the hawkmen. The others consider different approaches to at least get some Fist troops on the ground there. There is a minor miscommunication regarding who to send, but it is quickly resolved.

Nikolai makes for the Mansion to see what the hawkmen are up to. The answer? Not much.

He enters to find Doralle and Soliphis seated at a table and talking quietly.

"The start of a new day" Doralle smiles "Let's see if we can come to an agreement on the terms of a contract. Have you agreed on the clauses we require?"

Nikolai has the information from the others stored (somewhere) as he enters the Hawkmen's temporary mansion. He didn't really think the Giants would allow an embassy, but didn't hurt to ask. All that means is investigations on that side will have to wait until investigations on the other 3 sides are nearing completion. May not even need to go there.

"Good Morning. I hope your accommodations were at least satisfactory. The news is that the Giants are leaving. They don't want a contract, just want to make sure you or the Griffons don't get one. The Griffons are in negotiations for a contract and it's in the final stages, just needing to sign.

As Pru mentioned, we cannot come to an agreement with you regarding your conditions. Although most of your conditions are acceptable, you want an agreement that includes all of them or nothing doing. So we will not be making a contract with you.

Don't take it that we don't care about your wellbeing. Our agreement with the Griffons includes discovering what is the cause of this cold and stopping it. That benefits you as much as the Griffons. It also includes them limiting their flight pattern and avoid your territory. And we will be in contact with you regarding our findings. On this matter, we would like to open a formal relationship with the Hawkmen by establishing an Embassy. The Embassy would be staffed by only one Mailed Fist Ambassador and Assistant. This is not a contract, no payment due, and temporary if you'd rather, but as a means of communication between us. This will also put one of the Mailed Fist on your side to be an Eye Witness to the conditions on your side, experiencing what you experience. And if something goes awry and we need to come to your aid, we will know immediately.

Can we at least agree upon an Embassy?"

Anna and Michael confirm that they have an agreement.

"Excellent" Ceres stands "When shall we leave?" He is quite keen to get things resolved as quickly as possible.

Getting to Shadow Mountain may be a problem though. Teleportation to the mountain is apparently blocked. However will the party and griffons make the trip there? :)

~.~ The Giants ~.~

Sigvar makes a Sense Motive check! He decides against asking or pushing the giants any further about signing a contract of even setting up a post on their side of the mountain. He doesn't sense any ill-will from the giants as they walk away. They've had a chance to have their say. It's strange. As diplomats, these two weren't the worst giants in the Wold. Chances are though that the rest of their kind would attack the Fist on sight (to their own detriment, of course) if you were to be seen on their turf.

~.~ The Hawkmen ~.~

The group are in agreement now. The terms the hawkmen want just cannot be agreed to. Trayvin and Tinker talk and decide that the group really only needs one contract. Without a contract with the hawkmen though, perhaps they would be agreeable to a less formal relationship?

Pru breaks the news very tactfully, and Nikolai adds to it.

Doralle frowns. "It is regrettable that we couldn't come to an agreement. It is good news though that you didn't take a contract with the giants, however. As for an embassy. Hmmm. Give us a moment please."

Doralle and Soliphis step away from the table and out of earshot of the party. They look to simply be talking. Neither raises their voice, looks angry, or gesticulates.

They return to the table and sit down. It's Doralle that speaks again. "Keeping the beasts from our skies would certainly help us, though you being in their employ does give us reason to be concerned. If they are the cause you might keep it confidential. With that being said, if you are able to resolve the cause of the weather then I think at that time it would be good for us to discuss opening a more formal - and hopefully mutually beneficial - relationship."

I could become a griffon for a 17 minute burst and a dragon for another 17 minute burst and probably something else that could fly approachably at griffon speed for another 17 minute burst followed by something else that capped at slighlt slower for a 17 minute burst. Alternatively I have a speedy dinosaur form however it would be restricted to land but pair it with longstrider and it can run just slightly slower than a griffon can fly. I could maintain that form indefinitely. I'm not sure of the wisdom of splitting the party especially if we are not sure what happens to those who attempt to teleport"

"I knew they were hiding something" Ceres turns to Hemera "Could it be possible that they found a way to block the teleportation? Perhaps they've already started assembling armies and have blocked teleportation to stop us from calling on aid and gathering our own? We should return without delay". Hemera doesn't answer though is obviously considering the possibility.

The party have a number of ideas and thoughts on the matter.

Michael finds a way to bring up the topic the party have been thinking about but haven't been able to ask. Can they ride the griffons? It does bring about a bit of an uncomfortable pause before Hemera answers. "We've never carried riders before. However, if it means that we can leave today then we can try."

Sigvar isn't quite sure what would even happen if the party tried to teleport. The hawkmen didn't elaborate on it specifically. He wonders if it may be something akin to a dimensional anchor. That would be quite the spell! He's right in that others may have noticed, but to be fair, it may only be affecting Shadow Mountain and the group have only spoken with three races so far. How far it extends from Shadow Mountain is a mystery too.

Pru and Trayvin wonder about other ways to get there including some druidic type ways. Anna goes through the list of forms she can take and comes up with quite a combination. Nikolai wants to do a little more prep before the group leave.

Tinker has some thoughts on what the party should share with the hawkmen, though his take is different to the others. Should they share what they learn about the weather for some goodwill, or should they only share if they have a contract in place?

To Anna:
go for the bird. if it's small enough I can fit you in my pocket. The Griffons are entertaining the idea, but we want to make it as easy on them as we can, I figure a scroll of shrink person would be helpful if more than two of us are going.

To the griffons. I know you've carried meals back to your cubs larger than me! , he says with a grin and a small chuckle. in all seriousness though, we do have some magic that can mitigate our weight..
I don't know if it fits the picture we've been painting of the Hawkmen. if they were planning on attacking, it would have been prudent to keep the teleport ban secret, and they seemed to think that it was you guys and the giants that put it in place to get them at a disadvantage.

I'm looking at this all as a third party with no skin in the game. That gives me a perspective unclouded by past animosity, but to be fair, not having had to deal with the Hawkmen, I also don't know how treacherous they can be.

Be all that as it may, it does not really change what we can do. we have a contract and are in the process of discussing how best to get to The Mountian as fast as possible. we would be doing the same thing even if we didn't know. .

Michael shrugs, worrying has never been something he was very good at, but then again, he's never had much in the way of family besides the Fist...and as his old Sargent used to tell him, "When your numbers up Gargul comes for you, and all the worrying in the world won't stay his hand."

Nikolai points out that it took them a day and a half to fly. That was not carrying anyone. If they do carry anyone, even as small as Michael or light as Pru, it will take longer.

Nikolai fetches a map from the library that shows a good level of detail around Shadow Mountain and shows it to the Griffons.
"Ok, show us here on the map where you think it best we meet up. We'll come by land according to the straightest route by road. Since our contract does not prevent you from flying anywhere off the mountain and not in any of the other two territories, you can keep a few of your members patrolling along those roads approaching the area you designate. May take us three, maybe four days, depending on the roads. Then you can guide us in."

Once there, it will be easy for Pru to teleport back to the Citadel with a good route for the troops to take and with a few message scrolls, they can let us know of their progress until we meet them.

Pru wants to ask the hawkmen a little more about the teleportation block but she finds they're not in a particularly great mood. They're packing and preparing to depart when she arrives. Tinker made it clear that the Fist wouldn't be sharing any further information with them in regards to investigating and addressing the weather. With that being the case, they have no interest in sharing any further information either.

---------

There's still discussion as to how to get to the mountain. Without knowing how far the teleportation block extends there's no way of knowing at what point it will or won't work. There's also the unknown of what the hawkmen meant about the troubles. Will the spell simply fail? Will it send casters to a completely different location? Will there be unintended or even hazardous consequences? So many unknowns. Anna wants to go for a mid-point. Teleport half-way and travel the rest. Sigvar has a similar thought.

Trayvin is ready to just start walking now. They're going to get there eventually, right?

Michael tries to come up with ways that the griffons could carry him. They can handle the weight of course. They've just never had anyone on their backs before. It could be a bumpy - albeit exhilarating - ride.

Nikolai suggests that the griffons might be a little slower with a rider, but the griffons are confident that wouldn't necessarily be the case. Highlight to display spoiler: {In terms of the time it took for the griffons to get to the Citadel I was going with the overland rules. With or without a rider would be the same time.}

He puts forward the option of having the griffons fly on ahead and to pick a point where they can all meet. Nikolai checks the map and finds that the southern edge of Shadow Mountain is around 100miles north-ish of the Citadel.

Nikolai rolls his eyes at Pompous' jest.

Meanwhile, his mind starts calculating the time on the road. Distance of 100 miles doesn't sound bad but that's not accounting for winding roads and the speed of a wagon. But the wagon is nice because it will carry some supplies they can give to the Hawkmen and Griffons. He poses this to the others.

"Pru, we need to research some magic that can animate a wagon so it can move without being pulled by horses and move faster. I wonder if our Mage School here can work on this project. Could be a great money maker as well."

Tinker checks in with the Chiefs to make sure everything is well in hand before the party depart. De Mowbray seems confident that he has everything under control, though does ask one question: "How should we contact you if we need you?"

Sigvar sets very clear expectations for his Cadre. He's sure his orders will be followed to the letter.

Pru is happy to go with a teleport option if there is a safe place to do so. Fortunately Anna's quite familiar with the region and as she speaks with the griffons more details come to mind. She identifies two possible locations on the northern side of the mountain. Drago Hamlet is a very small place and is the closest to the mountain, practically at the base of the north slope. If the teleportation issues affect the whole mountain then there is a chance that the hamlet may also be affected. Further out is Heiron. It's a small town situated where the Phosy and South Phosy rivers meet, and is about 30 miles northwest of the mountain. The land to the east of Heiron (directly north of the mountain) is just wide open plains.

Anna asks the griffons about the towns. "They're not places we tend to go. I don't think we'd be particularly welcome there though" Hemera responds. Anna knows enough about griffons to realize that they have a bit of a reputation for hunting and eating horses they've stolen from ranchers. It's likely it wouldn't be safe for the pair to be seen near the town.

Nikolai wants to make sure that the routes are clearly marked so that troops can follow along. Nikolai is thinking a platoon, Michael had told the griffons 'some troops', and earlier it was only a few specialists. How many boots on the ground are the KCs planning on bringing to the mountain?

Anna's knowledge of geography is enough that she knows most of the routes in the area that could lead to Shadow Mountain. Ceres and Hemera have never had such need of paths and trails, preferring to keep away from civilized areas and seldom (if ever?) ventured away from the mountain. In fact, you all vaguely recall seeing trails on that nicely detailed map the WLA sent you as a gift. Still need to find a good place to hang that.

Trayvin seems happy to go with the flow.

Pompous is getting a little bird-brained, cracking himself up in the process.

"I don't think we should bring more than two or three Fists," Pru says of the troops. "Especially if the Hawkmen are going to contract mercenaries of their own. We don't need a lot of armed troops running around up there; that's a recipe for trouble. If we find we need more, we can always send for them."

Pru assures the griffons that there's no need for them to venture close to the towns. "If we Teleported there, we'd come and meet you someplace safer for you," she says.

The party are all in agreement on the teleportation plan. It might take two trips but if it means Pru can get everyone safely towards the mountain then it's worth it.

How many troops to send is still a bit undecided. Nikolai asks a good question though. How many miles of border are you planning to patrol? Based on what Anna has told everyone the mountain is about 100 miles across at the widest part of the base and its height has never been determined. That's an awful lot of space to cover.

"If the hawkmen and giants are rallying to attack us then we need sufficient number to defend ourselves, even push back!" Ceres is adamant. Hemera has a more cautious approach. "Resources are scarce and there is already very little to share."

OOC: I'll see if I still have the loot e-mail.

IC: Nikolai explains the reasoning for more troops than just a Fist or two. Firstly, they can be an eyewitness to things along the border, perhaps, that can dispel any notions from the hawkmen that the griffons are purposely flying all the way south to spy on them, or crossing to the giants to 'collude' with them. Although a long shot at this point. Secondly, a patrol may come across some clue. You never know.
"However, I'm not pressing the issue. Michael is right, though. Even though we really think there's a fourth party involved, the Frost Giants don't control their whole side. On the other hand, enough troops to stop a force of giants and, or, hawkmen, will be way to suspicious for the other two as well. And you know the Hawkmen don't need any more fuel for their suspicions. So, how big a herd of cattle do the Griffons want? Be good to know before we start a cattle drive."

Discussions continue on how many troops to send but the general consesus is 10 - 12 for now. If things turn out to be worse (or more troops are required) then the party can likely deter any potential threats long enough for more troops to arrive.

How many cattle for the griffons? How many have you got! It will all depend on how long it takes to address the weather concerns. If things are resolved quickly then hopefully the fauna of the mountain will flourish and provide a readily available source of food once more. If the weather continues, well, longer term arrangements might be required.

There is a question over what happened to the recently recovered loot. Those last few pieces of gold could end up buying something very useful. You just don't know.

A tiger in captivity gets about 25lbs of meat per day. in the wild they will gorge themselves with up to 100lbs of meat and then fast for 3 or 4 days. Since flight takes so much more energy than stalking prey I estimated that the griffons would need about 75 to 100 lbs of meat per day if they were active, but they could get by on 50 lbs if they were sedenary. )
