Micah takes last watch (rolling his perception for him. 9) Bartomus takes first watch (19) Stohp takes first watch (29) Stock is on second watch (23) and posts the watch schedule, but Stohp already declared first watch. Zanderallen suggest brushing up on naval combat and takes first watch (16) Delia and Hawky cover third watch (28,15) Ohen ? Sid ? - I thought I saw an email that Sid needed someone to cover. _____________________
Malici assess the situation and takes third watch with Micah. He sits and stares alternating toward the forest and out into the lake. (he rolled a 31). He stays very quiet and tries to give Micah his space.
The night passes uneventfully. Your first watch is disturbed by the croaking of a lot of frogs along the shore line. Yet when ever you tried to get near, you'd hear a splash and then eventually the croaking resumed. A few of you hear the occasional spat of a fish in the water. Might be some good fishing around the shore.
The morning is hazy with a light fog, and the run rising from the east dances along the ripples in the water. Morning is come.
How long do you wish to wait for the boat? Are you doing anything to spot the boat? Are you doing anything to signal the boat?
Does anyone have profession sailor? Or does anyone have a natural knowledge local of 10 or more? If not who can roll for knowledge local? and/or does anyone have any ideas for any kind of skills you may have that would help you with naval stuff...Swim? I mean you all, well most of you, swam down to the merfolk city but that's underwater naval not surface naval.
oh and dragon boat for reference to get it in your mind.
I'm not posting the orient map right now as you did it at dusk, and it's unlikely that either group moved in the night. Unless you really want to do it again while you are waiting.
Micah finds it curious that Malici chose to stand watch with him, but makes no overtures. As dawn nears, he approaches the sorcerer and speaks quietly, "I was raised by both my parents who, though holding me to high standards, were also loving. I always assumed I would be a smith like my father and his father before him, but I was called by Domi. The world I live in now is so different than the one I expected to be in and so different than that my family operates in. It seems that we, the Silver Shields, that is, are always plunged into one crisis after another." He pauses a moment before continuing, "And I am fine with that. Domi has called me and equipped me for this purpose, so it is what I will do. I have seen magic and power destroy people and I, along with the other Shields, have stopped them. I do hope we are allies. I would even like for us to be friends....and I pray to Domi that this magic," he indicates with a gesture that he is referring to that of the medallion, "does not interfere with that."
The next morning after his prayers, he comments on the preparations, "It appears having command of the air would be key. Ships cannot change direction very well. If only we still had some of that underwater gear so that we could approach unseen. I can breathe below the surface, but I swim like a set of plate mail with a cleric in it."

Bartomus awoke to a day breaking over the lake and it was a great site. He took some time to himself, first taking care of some necessary business, and then doing his morning meditations while watching the sunrise above the small rectangle of the Float knowing it was huge. It was a perspective that he really enjoyed and he returned to gathering his kit with a smile on his face.
He approached Stohp at her fire and asked, "See anything out there?" Was incredible to just sit and watch the stars last night and then to see the Float out there looking like a child's block left on a sparkling floor."

The DC of this check is 25, or the result of the boat captain’s Profession (sailor) check, whichever is higher. For each size category larger than the dragon turtle’s size, it takes a cumulative –10 penalty on this CMB check. Shell Retreat (Ex) A Lake Turtle can retreat within its shell as a swift action, gaining a +8 enhancement bonus to its existing natural armor but also takes a -4 enhancement on its Reflex saves. While in its shell, a turtle cannot take any action except to end the retreat. The turtle can end its retreat with a free action on its turn.
Lake Turtles are reptiles with hard shells that they can retreat into when threatened. They come in a variety of sizes. Their flippers and are better suited for swimming than walking. Lake Turtles make their homes in the Fresh water lake near the Crying Woods. They can be domesticated and serve as a means of transportation for some of those in The Float.
A lake turtle’s shell varies in color between individuals. Some have dull shells of green and grey/blue, others are brown and rust red. The coloration of the head, tail, and legs is a pale grey or white color, with darker black spots.

Now the Float does not have any "large" sailing type ships, but there are 2 predominate types.
Large Fishing Boat - Ship’s Boat Ship’s boats are usually carried on the decks of larger ships to use as tenders to ferry passengers and cargo from ship to shore or between ships. Some ship’s boats are reserved for the use of officers, while others are used as landing craft or to carry boarding parties. An average ship’s boat is 16 to 24 feet long (though the largest ship’s boats can be upward of 30 feet long) and has anywhere from four to 10 oars as well as a single mast with a square or lateen sail. A ship’s boat has a waterborne speed of 2 miles per hour or 20 miles per day. A ship’s boat cannot carry any siege engines. DM Robert - "Isn't that what the giant bonfire was for?" Thursday April 22nd, 2021 8:05:53 PM
Micah waits for the boat. Stohp eyes the ship. Stock says he could always board a pirate ship with a fly. And forgets about the burning signal fire. Ohen puts some glowing balls into the air, also forgetting there's a signal fire burning. Zanderallen agrees flying would be best for boarding. Sid takes about magic arrows, a single shot magic item, whereas magicing up your bow produces all magic enhanced arrows. Delia is for ranged torment of enemies, and points out the bonfire to everyone. Bartomus? ______________________

Bartomus picks up on a few things and asks a question. Stohp goes about recruiting some help. Micah wants to know what's happened while they were gone. Stock is for Riverton, or where the pirates are. Zanderallen wants to know about the sailors. Delia puts out the fire while keeping an ear towards the boat. Ohen gets rid of the signal balls. Sid? _________ think of long john silver from the 1934 Treasure Island, when Ahab talks.
Ahab looks at you and nods. "I'll say things are getting spooky. Been two fishin' boats not come back. And then mid-day yesterday there was turtle shell floating back to the harbor. Them's what deals with turtles think it was Gingersnap." Knowledge Local 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Giant Lake Turtle size gargantuan}
Anticipating a follow up question. The fishing boats (2) 1 was the size of the Mary Celeste, the other was smaller, row boat size. Both were generally fishing to the west/southwest of The Float. Ginger had recently been chartered and was apparently headed to Merfolk waters. Ahab will lean in and whisper, "Heard tell there was signs that whatever killed Ginger done ate her, scraps marks in the shell don't ya know." whether that's exaggeration, rumor, or what not you don't know. Ahab will admit he didn't actually see any of the remains.
Ahab continues, "Well you know how it is, sailor's be a superstitious lot. They don't be wantin' to go out no more. Can't say as a I blame them. But the Paragon comes to me and says, there's a job need doin' and can I do it. Well like I says I owe him a bit for curing young Pip a way back. So I scrounge up this lot and we take to the waters rowin' hard 'n fast." He looks at the crew. "You're right tho', don't think they have it in them to get us back quick. And somethin' be in the water." He snaps his fingers and points at Stock, "Did your say pirates? Thar could 'splain somethin'."
Eyeing the men Stock thinks they are more exhausted than anything, they likely aren't even thinking straight enough to have a morale of any kind.
He turns to Zanderallen, "Navy? Float ain't got no navy, what need for a navy. Ain't had no troubles from anythin' 'cept the wood since we'd got moved here. He shrugs, boys, ain't much at fightin' 'cept in bars. They may be game to give some transportation in battle if the pay is good." He scratches at his whiskery chin. "May be a good thing to have the boys rest some. But that means another rowing by night." He sticks his finger in the air. "Hmm, could use the sail, not as fast as rowing, but we could start now."
Zanerallen, being a military man, knows there's not balista or catapult located anywhere in the city. As to why there's no navy, again you've been pretty much locked in an inland sea by yourselves for close to 15 years.
You are somewhere between 20-25 miles as the crow flies, from the Float. The crew would need 8 hours of rest but then they would be able to row again. They would have to row for 8 hours straight to get back in 8 hours. With the current wind it would probably take you 14 or so hours to return, it's not that strong, and you wouldn't be able to go in a straight line.

"If we are going to let them get a good rest, we probably need to get everyone under cover, any fires be such that they burn clean with really dry things so we don't send up a giant smoke plume. Or, I guess we could just let the winds take us," Bartomus offered up as ideas.

Stohp is slightly surprised that the man doesn't seem to have already been told the whole situation. Or maybe he was appraised and she just misread his statements. She clarifies just in case. "No telling what killed the turtle but the missing ships might be connected to our mission. Cutter was attacked by someone that came over the water. Whoever it was might be responsible for the other troubles you mentioned. We're tracking down the culprits and dealing with them. As much as I'd prefer to catch them on land there's no telling where we'll run across them - we have a way of tracking their direction but not their exact position. There's every chance we catch them on the water. If that happens I doubt they'll let us avoid a fight on the open water. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the possible danger beforehand.
We're almost certainly far enough away that we can all get a good rest under wind power. The sooner we catch them the less damage they'll deal, but a tired crew won't do us any favors should a navel engagement become inevitable. With the coin and a close lookout maybe we'll spot them before they spot us and be able to make a plan to catch them on land."

Gathering the other Shields around and informing them that he is about to cast sending, he starts the protracted ritual to do so. After ten minutes have passed, he focuses on the merfolk king and sends the following message: Reports of missing boats and remains of a giant turtle headed to your waters found with scrape marks. Stock is pretty sure the prevailing wind is usually southwest, west, or northwest (origin, flowing the opposite direction, ie southwest blows to northeast, etc). Right now the wind is west/southwest. That usually means no front is moving in.
It seems the there are some different directions the party has suggested for travel. There does not seem to be a consensus. 1 - set sail now, hope nothing requires you to use oars of any speed for more than an hour, because then they would be exhausted. 2 - give the sailors a rest, let them stretch their legs, etc. Then set sail. For each hour you let them rest, I'd give you an hour back of rowing at moderate slow speed. 3 - Well none of you said let them rest 8 hours so I'm guessing that's not even an option.
Fatigues says "A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a –2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued."
FYI exhausted says "An exhausted character moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –6 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. After 1 hour of complete rest, an exhausted character becomes fatigued. A fatigued character becomes exhausted by doing something else that would normally cause fatigue."

He does relate events in the spoiler section. Bartomus cracks knuckles and goes Swedish masseuse. Stohp finds a comfy rock to sit upon. Zanderallen contemplates how to help while trying and not really succeeding. Stock attempts to climbs a tree, a dwarf in a tree, a sight to behold. Ohen watches the lake fully cognizant of the sun's place in telling the correct time. Micah aids in refreshing the crew. _______________
There are numerous grunts and groans as Bartomus takes to working these puny human girly muscles. There are audible cracks as joints loosen vigorously. The sailors who are watching and not under the ministrations of the taur, stare in shock and horror. But when Jacques stands from the log he was stretched on he visibly smiles. "Thanks, I feel better already." he tells Bartomus.
Micah also makes sure the sailors get hydrated and rested. You find that they did bring a lunch or breakfast, at least it appears they have 1 meal ready. And they eat it now, as they could not eat while rowing. It seems like a small dinner to you, but you think that it could suffice. Many point to the dwarf looking out from a tree top. "Look a tree hugging dwarf." There is much laughter which is also a form of good medicine for the men.
Pip comes over and stares at Stohp. He pushes a finger at her. "You sure are big. Why you so glum? If I were big like you I wouldn't be no lookout on a boat, I'd be ...." He pauses, you can tell he's not sure what he would be if he were big like you.
Malici goes around casting prestidigitation on the sailors, removing their sweat and freshening up their garments. "A clean body is a healthy body." He politely tells each one as he goes among them.
Fortunately no one has seen anything stirring on the lake. Captain Ahab looks up to the sun. "It be getting close to noon. I thinks we be sailing now so we don't be sailing in the dark. Maybe, luck be with us we make The Float by near dark." He unrolls a map. "But if you be wanting to head to Riverton well that be near 100 miles from here. Four maybe five days travel. Cutter be nigh on 150 miles." He looks at you glummly. "Didn't figure on no long trip. Don't got the proper supplies."
The crew get up from their places of rest. It's been 4 hours, and they still look tired. But maybe with luck and sailing part of the way, they would be fresh enough to do some rowing should the need arise. Ahab looks expectantly at you, waiting for your decision.

He paused and then went on. "The captain I suspect could give us a course or we just draw a line on something showing us and the float, then mark off where you were already getting a sense things were at. check in every now and then as we sail along and see if those points stay put? Just an idea.

The crew gets on board. Captain Ahab gets the sail up with some help from those with some muscles on board. Pip starts to go up the mast then pauses and looks at Delia and Sid. "Excuse me, but you seem better able to act as lookout than me." He offers up the spy glass.
Perception checks of anyone wanting to make them, the spyglass gives you extended range.
Malici shrugs and says {b]"I'm pretty sure I'm just getting a direction, not a distance."[/b] He does periodically check the reading. You note that he keeps stopping looking towards the Float as you tack back and forth a bit with the wind. And also off to the south/southwest.
As a note, for clarification, as from Delia's comment it seems all is not clear. The representative from the Float to the Merfolk was most likely using the, as already stated, chartered turtle cruise. The 'large boat' (maybe I should have more properly said, Colossal sized boat) in the water near where the turtle blood was, was most likely the dragon boat of the pirates. There's is the only large boat on the lake.
And, keep in mind that technically a large, fully manned dragon boat, can make almost 50 miles in one 24 hour period. They don't need to land at night and can keep moving.

Once the math winds down he brings up a different topic, "Any thoughts on how we're going to fight this boat of dragon pirates once we fight them. Based on what Ahab has said we're going to be out-shipped and out-manned in whatever craft we chase them in. Ohen or Bart, do either of you possess magic to control the wind or weather to give us an advantage?"

Stohp and Micah sorta discuss how to triangulate, while Zanderallen considers their next move once back at the Float.
Delia climbs the rigging and looks about, as does Hawky.
Bartomus and Stock discuss shouting.
Ohen and Zanderallen discuss tactics.
Sid...ties himself to the ship and jumps in the water? (DM is not following why.)

Malici takes occasional "readings", while Micah plots on his map. A problem becomes apparent. While the piece on land is fairly easy to pinpoint, the one on water is proving more difficult. The land bound piece is a good ways to the south. The sea bound piece appears to be moving at a good clip, because the reading lines aren't crossing each other. Its always generally north of the party.
Then, Hawky lets out a screech. Shortly, thereafter, Delia makes out a white square sail to the north.

Delia will snap back to high alert following Hawky's screech, glancing at him to determine which direction to train the spyglass in. She will then follow Bart's advice and shout, "Sail to the north!" and try to estimate a distance and include that in her alert. She will continue to scan their surroundings with the spyglass to make sure the sail is the only thing on the Shields' horizon.

He decides to assume it is moving at a constant rate and direction and attempts to estimate both its speed and course.
With the southern target, he tries to place it on their map, attempting to determine what it is near to.
At Delia's call, he deliberately rolls up and stows all his maps and charts, then turns to watch for the approaching sail.

"Captain, can we outrun and make the Float?" Bartomus asked thinking the Captain would be the best to decide what options were realistic with his ship and crew. He also began thinking about Stock's question. Which didn't ease his mind at all.

Micah has been tracking. The southern target is way, way south, and not really close to anything. Its on the lakeshore, about 10 miles south of the river that runs from the lake northwest to the sea.
Stohp and Stock look to the north. Sure enough, the line to the sea target runs directly over that sail.
Bartomus asks Ahab about the chances of making a run for the Float. He also begins thinking about combat plans.
Zanderallen asks if any other vessels might be sailing on the lake, and how long it will take to close.
Malici admits he's feeling a little woozy.
Ohen offers to try and take out the sails when the craft gets closer.
Sid continues to stand watch underwater.
Captain Ahab turns at Delia's call, a sour expression passing across his features. While the Shields ask their questions, the fellow glances at the sun, then forward, then off to the north. Only Zander's query about other ships on the lake draws a reaction. Ahab fixes the paladin with an incredulous look. "I ain't the Port Authority. Sides, Float is an island. People go out on the water all the time."
The crew, meanwhile, has jumped to break out oars, and assumes seats. The look up to Ahab expectantly. Ahab holds up a hand to the crew, and looks at the Shields.
"Guessing that young lady spotted it right off, which'd put her at 10, maybe 12 miles. Dragon Boat likely is faster than us, and she's got an angle. She'll likely catch us before we see the Float, oars or no oars. Probably take a couple hours if we stay on this heading. We'll see in a few minutes if she means to intercept us, and an hour after that to get a good look at her.
Or, we turn and run straight away from her, and maybe make the shoreline before they catch up."
Ahab regards the party. "Or, you bein' big shot heros and all, we turn toward her. But, just to be clear. We get close, an' the crew goes below. An' you better keep us from sinking, or I'll haunt you the rest o' your days."

Micah nods agreement with Stock and adds, "Yes, we should lure them close, but without being too obvious about it. Maybe we can catch them unprepared for rigorous counter attack. Micah considers an underwater approach, but goes with drawing them close as well. Zanderallen agrees with an air attack, and asks the Captain to make a show of running for it. Malici agrees, but wonders about getting back. Delia keeps watch topside. Sid keeps watch below.

After a few minutes, Delia notes a change in the sail's heading. She relays this down. Ahab nods, and brings the Mary Celeste about, heading directly away from the sail. In response, the sail changes heading again, now in full on pursuit.
"Stow oars," Ahab commands, and the men, somewhat reluctantly, put the oars away.
The Captain turns back to the Shields. "Very well. We look like we're running, but they'll catch us. Afore they do, you go board them. I'll sail about, keeping an eye, and whenever you're done, I'll come in to pick you up."
He gives Zanderallen a grin. "Oh, and if you all get killed, please have the decency to cripple that ship first, so I can get away."
-
Time passes, and the chasing ship closes ground. After a while, everyone can make out the Dragon Boat. It's a large, single sailed vessel with eight oars on each side. Rowing in unison, the ship is creating quite a wake behind it. It's twice as long as the Mary Celeste and advances inexorably.
Ahab has been timing the pace of the oars. "Long haul pace," he mutters. "Conserving their energy. Guessing the rowers are also fighters."

The dragon ship draws closer.
As it closes to 2000', Ohen starts casting various spells on himself, and then casts Fly on Bartomus and Stock. Delia climbs down, gets her own Fly spell, and buffs herself.
Micah tries to learn some things about the opposing forces. At this distance, the group can tell the rowers are hunmanoid, armored, and seated on the top deck. The sail is pretty large. Its higher than the Mary Celete's and 8' or so above the deck. The DM has no idea what a freeboard is. It looks like your stereotypical Viking longship.
None of which is likely to matter, if Ohen can get all those fireballs going.
But, as of this post, he's only cast one.
At 800', Ohen casts a maximized fireball on the sail. He's able to hit the deck as well. The sail is vaporized in a ball of fire. Judging by the screaming echoing over the water, some of the rowers didn't fare well either.
The pair of oars on either side of the Dragon Boat nearest the sail go limp. The rest of the oars brake hard, and the vessel shudders as it loses nearly all of its speed. There is quite a bustle on deck, and as figures move about, the Shields are able to identify the crew as bugbears.

Malici casted Fly on all those that Ohen could not: Micah, Zanderallen, Stohp, and Sid. (Note not himself).
"Why couldn't the Bubears eat turtle? They have big teeth. No one said how big the teeth marks were." Malici looks with the others. "I'd say if they have prisoners they may be tied to the mast. Or maybe stowed near the front. The back has the rudder so likely not there. I don't think one of those boats really has but the one deck."
During this round 1, he will cast spell resistance on himself.

Also, if a prisoner was tied to the mast or up top we need to get there NOW." Sid will activate his boots and draw Mildred, his shortsword of subtlety, and go about 10' above the deck and a straight course there.

- Ohen casts Haste on everyone. He ascends 40', and 10' closer to the dragon ship, frantically looking for signs of a prisoner. Ascend is at half speed, and cast a spell this round, so cannot double move - Bartomus flies toward the dragon boat. DM assumes Bart is taking double move this round straight toward the dragon boat. - Stock drinks a potion, and tells Ahab to turn and get closer. - Micah notes the freeboard of the dragon boat is low enough that someone walking on the water could climb in. He casts Bless on the party, while searching the water for sea monsters. He sees none. - Delia flies to the top of the Mary Celete's mast and scans the dragon boat's deck for signs of a prisoner. - Zanderallen casts a spell on Stock, and urges everyone to get closer. - Malici casted Fly last round on everyone Ohen missed, except for himself. This round, he buffs himself. - Stohp flies toward the ship. There is too much distance to cover to fly to it, and then above it, as stated. DM assumes Stohp is taking double move this round straight toward the dragon boat. - Sid already has the Fly spell cast on him, thus doesn't need to activate his boots. He lifts off the deck, and flies toward the dragon boat.
Neither Ohen nor Delia see anyone who appears to be a prisoner. However, given the destroyed sail, blackened mast, and burnt bodies of the rowers just next to the mast, here's hoping nobody was tied to it. Both can see some kind of hatch cover centered in the deck in front of the mast. There is also some kind of large, dog-looking thing at the very front of the deck. It appears to be chained to the front part of the ship.
At the appearance of the flyers, a large fellow at the back of the dragon boat barks out orders. Most of the remaining crews pulls in and stows the oars, while a few break out bows. The large fellow drinks a potion.
Deprived of rowers, the dragon boat drifts to a halt.
The Mary Celeste also comes to a halt, as Ahab and the crew manuever to get her turned around.
The dragon boat is 725' from the Mary Celeste and those on board her.
Ohen is at elevation 45', and 715' from the dragon boat. Delia is at elevation 40', and 725' from the dragon boat. Stohp and Bart are at elevation 5', and 545' from the dragon boat. Sid is at elevation 15', and 565' from the dragon boat. Micah, Stock, Zanderallen, and Malici are standing on the deck of the Mary Celeste.

"Top Mast!" bellows the Order Giving Bugbear, pointing at Malici Dragon. "And open hatch!"
The bugbear/magic user/half dragon looks up at Malici with a hiss, considers half a second, and casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {Magic Missile} Ohen recognizes the spell, and casts his own second level evocation spell to counterspell it. Emaciated Skeleton Guy, eyes on Ohen, concentrates. But, whatever he was planning didn't work. Magic-user/half-dragon's spell fizzles, and she lets out a screech of frustration.
Emaciated Skeleton Guy resets, continuing to watch Ohen.
A bugbear pops open the hatch, and a couple more haul out a soaking wet, bound, human male with jet black hair. The man hangs limply as the bugbears hold him.
Order Giving Guy moves to the front of the vessel, pulling out a falchion. Stopping right next to the human, he levels the blade at the hapless fellow's throat. The bugbear glances up at Malici, and then at the oncoming Shields in what should be a pretty clear threat.
The rest of the bugbears wait, javelins in hand.

Micah asks, "Why would we parlay with you?" Boss Bugbear grins. "Cause I'm holding a sword at the throat of a Very Important Person. And I know you know, 'cause you stopped when I did it." Micah is quick to grasp he's not dealing with your average bugbear. Wearing full plate, and carrying that nasty looking falchion, the creature reeks of malice. His sharp eyes miss nothing however, revealing a sharp intelligence as well.
And then things get interesting.
Malici disappears. He then begins casting Dimension Door. Bugbear/Dragon immediately launches a Fireball at him, high enough to avoid the rest of the crew. Malici takes 27 hp damage (Ref DC16 halves), and must make Concentration check (DC 13+damage taken)to complete Dimension Door spell.
The Boss curses. "Kill them all!" he roars. The Boss begins to run through the prisoner, triggering Ohen's spell, which in turn triggers Summoned Skeleton Guy's counter.
Summoned Skeleton Guy fails to dispel Ohen's spell .... but Boss Bugbear resists the effect!
With a growl, he slices into the prisoner, who collapses onto the deck.
The lead 11 bugbears throw javelins at Micah, all of which miss.
Then, they all leap forward, except the last one, who releases the dog like thing.
