DM(James M) - The Mystery Continues

Osul asked about pursuit of the dragon.
Vamir voted to follow Vurm.
Armand was against following the dragon.
Elyngael looked for her arrows, but they were either lost or broken. With the proper skill she could reassemble a quarter of them into workable arrows.
Neshi agreed to not pursue Vurm and reminded everyone they still hadn't found a portal.
Owen voted to not follow Vurm, but was all for tracking down the one that aided him. Based on his knowledge of the area he suspected Vurm bound initialy for the Crystal Mountains.
Atlas laments on the absence of a bard.

-----

Vurm was gone and the Wardens had been victorious. The tales of dragons being so fierce must also come from the fact that they had a strong sense of self preservation. Every one of the Wardens knew that Vurm was beaten and very near death when he burrowed into the ground as he did. A stupid creature might have turned to confront them with it's dying breath, but a dragon...it would seek to live another day.

Perhaps it was as they'd overheard and it would go into hiding to lick its wounds and return in a century or two. Perhaps it would find easier hunting grounds without such stalwart defenders to confront.

For now the Warden's had a choice. Would they follow the dragon in the hope that they'd catch it once it stopped, or would they return to the encampment to inform the Harvesters that it was now safe?

Elyngael easily got her bearings and pointed in the direction of the camp two days distant as the others debated the need to follow Vurm. As the majority of the Warden's elected to head back to the Harvester encampment and that direction was north, they started out through the tall grass of the plains.

The group was only as fast as their slowest member and their movement suffered as a result. Still however they made good time and soon were upon the location where they'd encountered the giant animals previously.

They needed to decide if they'd post watches in the night or take any other precautions.

Vamir - Highlight to display spoiler: {Vamir was convinced he was right. They'd need to track down Vurm if only to find out who this secret ally was.}

The evening and night pass uneventfully as it seems most of the dangerous wildlife having scented on Vurm is giving the area a wide berth. When they wake the next day it's to clouds and the threat of rain. At ground level the tall grass and cloud cover put the ground in deep shadow as they made their way back to the nomad camp.

By the end of the day they saw the magically woven grasses that formed the wall about the compound and they circled it until they found the opening. Once there they were soon greeted by Brangorn and Dharwyn. As Brangorn moved to welcome the Wardens Dharwyn departed to inform the others of their return.

"My friends! it is good you have returned. I hope you bring good news. I'm sure the Elders will be anxious to hear. There is also another with the elders that arrived earlier that you will certainly want to see as well."

As they moved through the compound they could hear the people talking.

"What do you think, they were only gone four days. What could they have done?"
"Whatever it was they ripped their clothes up pretty good, and they really need a bath. You see all that mud and dirt caked in their hair and on their faces?"

A child runs up to Elyngael and offers her a damp towel for her face. Others move in with cloths and wipe the Warden's faces and hands as they move through the encampment. Some of the guards offer to take the heavy packs from the Wardens and then act as a sherpa of sorts for them.

When they arrived somewhat better in appearance at the Great WigWam, the guards quickly opened the door for the Wardens. Once inside, Aranieda and the other Elders stood as a sign of respect to the Wardens. Aranieda then asked the Wardens to come forward and take a seat next to Cheops. None of the guards will met your gaze as it was
apparent they were ashamed of the treatment the wardens received upon their last meeting. Everyone the Wardens encounter seemed to be going out of their way to be polite and non confrontational.

"You have fought hard and by your looks you have been in a great battle. Tell us Warden's of the Tree of Parting, what news do you bring us and were you victorious?" Araneida said to the Wardens and the gathering at large as she posed the question all were waiting on an answer to.

I chalk that up to a bit of shock on our side and perhaps just exhaustion, or perhaps it was just a mirthful streak in a capricious deity. In any case with the aid of Mahyawu we found the site where-in he said great evil was brewing and causing problems. We descended deep into tunnel warrens seeking what we knew not. We found at last it was a dragon, a hybrid of red and blue, that was causing mayhem. Confronted in his caves we were able to confound him and wound him seriously but he managed to escape and bring the tunnels down on top of us. We managed to get away, and because now we knew our enemy were able to spy him out. Thus we learned that someone in the mountains that are in your territory an entity was able to heal him and restore his mind. We could see that he was returning to try once again to battle with us. But prepared we quickly put him to the test. When we were about to land the killing blow, the vile-sum worm that called itself Vurm, did escape again, showing truly that his spine and belly were yellow, not blue and red. But as he left he gave oath to Gargul to depart these lands and never return."

The council and Cheops all nod as Armand relates the tale. They look very relieved about the news and as each turned to smile at each other Cheops took that moment to stand.

“Now that all is done, I think I understand why things have been happening as they have. I believe that Vurm, as you call this dragon, may have encountered a mutation bloom, and since he wasn’t a mutated aberration of a dragon, I would say he probably won. A Mutation Bloom is something new to the Sargrass. Created by the Warper-Sarr, these Mutation Blooms mutate and drive mad any creature that comes into contact with it, and it draws all creatures of low will to itself. I surmise that Vurm was flying in the area, for reasons only a dragon can understand, and felt the draw of the mutation bloom. My guess is that he easily overcame the compulsion, but decided to investigate the source of the compultion, probably out of anger that something would try to mess with his mind. One would surmise that he battled and defeated the bloom, but what became of the bloom, only Vurm would be able to say. The conflict most likely left the dragon in a state of madness, at least to some degree, and in his madness he decided the Sargass Plains should be his new kingdom. Thus Vurm went hither and there to bring things to the plains that don’t belong here, to begin to terrorize the locals, and since this band of Harvesters were the closest, he decided to start with them.

The Tree Wardens have done a great favor for the Sargrass Plains, and have earned our thanks ten-fold! Thank you friends you are most welcome among the grasses! We ought to spread the word around the plains of the Tree Wardens’ achievements. Aranieda if you can send runners to the other Harvester encampments, as well as New Rattledam, and perhaps even Stone Temple.”

Aranieda agrees with the sphinx and says:

“It will be done as you suggest Cheops! Wardens of the Tree, from this day forward I name you Harvester friend, and after the runners do their jobs, any Harvester encampment you ever come upon will welcome the Tree Wardens as honorary and respected members of the community.”

The wardens are invited to stay as they convalesce. Cheops also offers them the chance to learn his language if they decide to stay for a short while.

DM: I didn’t see anything specific in the rules about learning languages, so unless you guys find something let’s go with a DC 20 Linguistics check for the first week and 1 less each week thereafter until the check is successful. DC 20 week 1, DC 19 week 2, etc. This assumes you’ve been studying the language on you own for a while.

The Elders have no problems with the length of time the Wardens choose to stay and would be grateful for any news of world and takes they’d like to share while they are here.

DM: Experience will be forthcoming. Myself or Jeremy will tabulate it and let you know soon. In the meantime there is an entrance to the catacombs here if you’d like to take care of magic item requirements.

Evening came and darkness descended upon the Sargrass and then exactly as was predicted a gentle rain started to fall that moved everyone inside their shelters after a short while. This was of course an active time for prairie pigeons so the hunters in the camp went deep into the grass to find those elusive sightless birds.

DM(James M) - A New Threat?
Thursday May 13th, 2021 8:27:10 AM

The next morning as the Warden's woke Cheops held class for those wanting to learn his language. Each morning thereafter was the same with the old creature going through the list of nouns and sentence structure of the spoken word and in the afternoon he produced a sheet of parchment that he could write upon, shake to erase, and write on again. In this way he was able to teach the written word as well. This particular language used symbols arranged in unique ways, but his students were able.

As the week came to a close the understanding of the language was much clearer in the mind of those studying it, but Cheops was acting strangely. He said nothing but anyone that knew the old fellow could tell something was on his mind. Before the next day was there Cheops gathered the Wardens up once more.

"Something is not right. I still feel the presence of something left over from the dragon, but it will take me a few days as I commune with the gods and decipher their responses. I fear however that Vurm has only set some things in motion and you will have to leave here soon to discover the depth of the dragons dealings in the Wold. As Vamir surmised, I believe this ally of Vurms poses a threat to Wold. In what way I am uncertain, but another attack is coming. When it does you should be prepared to trace the creatures to discover their origin."

With the proclaimation that another attack was coming the harvesters started preparations even as Cheops prepared to continue his language class.

DC 20 Linguistics check to have learned the language.

It was in the second week at the Harvester camp that Cheops approached once more. "The gods have been surprisingly forthcoming. There is an attack coming, but it is still a day distant. I can direct you to the location of the creatures, but it seems the portal the creatures are using is located in what remains of Vurm's lair."

Araneida spoke up at that time. "Wardens, the recent rainfall and it's effects upon the animals in the Sargrass prompted us to send our hunters out days ago. Most haven't returned and aren't due back in time to aid us in our defense. It seems we must call upon you again. If you could intercept this attack away from the camp it would save us from having to evacuate it."

"The vision I was given." Cheops continued. "Shows that the creatures are flying, but slowly, and they do not rest. I've also been unable to divine what kind of creatures they are as a ward has been placed upon them. My vision only shows the shadow cast upon the ground, not the actual creatures. They look to be humanoid, but the vision wasn't clear."

"Look!" Araneida exclaimed. "There! to the south."

Where Araneida pointed the Wardens could see a cloud of smoke rising above the plains. Whatever it was had set the grass aflame.

Rain was falling in the area at large and the enemy had stopped. What they were and looked like was still unknown to the Wardens as they looked out across the plains at the smoke on the horizon out beyond the effects of the rain as that precipitation was rapidly obscuring any view they might have.

Armands request for a spyglass was granted and he was handed one. It was made of rolled leather with heavy crystal lenses laid in slots and the whole thing tied together with leather straps. He would need some altitude before he'd be able to see over the tall grass.

Hear Ye Hear Ye!

I'm starting a Woldian recruitment blitz to fill what looks to be 10 spots.  We have 2 new games starting which accounts for 6 of the openings.  The other 4 are in existing non-veteran games.  The two new games will be called:

Bearclaw Keep
and
Heranmar.

The icons for these are already up on in the Career Games section, but the links just go to the LnB until the games begin.  [THANKS ROB FOR DESIGNING THOSE!!!]

I want to start with recruiting from 1) you good people and 2) inactive players.
SO!!!  If you have a friend [someone that still talks to you] talk to them and see if they want to play!  All they have to do to start the progress is to email me. [gericko@gmail.com].

I am going to send out some emails starting tonight to former players so I do not know whether this push will fill us up quickly or not.  :)  Better to play it on the safe side and talk to your friends immediately!

Enjoy your evening and the weekend AND talking to your friends about joining us!

For the first time in a long time, Atlas is getting a bit agitated. "Nothing bugs me more than being useless...oh wait, pointless complaining, that bugs me more. I'll shut up now. Lead the way my magical friends."

'Osul adds, "and that's north, so they are...", slowly swinging his arm through an eighth-circle left, "...that way-ish."

"A few miles? Who wants some clear skies?"

With sufficient agreement, he wipes away the clouds (okay, slowly), but keeps a moderate swinging breeze disturbing the grass tips to help cover their approach.

Osul banished the clouds and as the skies cleared Elyngeal, Vamir, and Osul saw five dots in the sky high in the air. Osul recognized the shape as those of the iron golems they encountered outside Vurm's lair. Even as the wardens spotted the golems the automatons begin to descend to the ground at the edge of a section of burned grass. At the rate they were going it would take them about fifteen minutes to reach the ground. At a dead run they could be there at the same time.

DM: Move 90' to be there at the same time.

OOC I'm confused, it's going to take them 15 minutes to descend and us 15 minutes at a run to move 90 feet to be there at the same time? That makes no sense.

"Great them again. Atlas do you want to take my adamantine hammer? I see no need to get to them any quicker, if I remember right, Elyngael did most of the damage to the two we fought previously. No reason to really get within toe to toe distance right off."

He casts Air Walk on himself and Brawn.

I'd cast some more prep stuff buy either the internet or google is giving me fits right now and keeps crashing.

Atlas responds to Armand, "That's a tough decision to make. My skills are trained specifically for this weapon. I don't know the last time I tried to use something else, let alone a crushing weapon instead of a slashing one. Let me try holding it."

Atlas takes the hammer from Armand and swings it around a bit. His strength makes it easy, but it feels unwieldy. "It's like trying to write with my left hand. I know my sword doesn't do as much damage as it should on these guys, but if I cannot hit them then the hammer won't either. Thank you though! Maybe I'll have to upgrade to an adamantine sword when I finally get to the Catacombs."

DM James: Sometimes my english not so good. :) Moving at least 90' per round you can be where they are coming down in fifteen minutes when they touch down.

The Warden's rush toward the descending golems and they can see that steam is rising from them as they set upon the burned out ground. As soon as the golems land they turn towards the Wardens and slowly start marching to them. These golems look to be the same as the ones they encountered outside Vurm's lair.

DM James: Encounter range is 600', the golems are moving at 30' per round. Map in next post.

OOC, run speed is 4x movement so 120 not 90. I think that was what was confusing me.

Armand considers the golems. "They seem a bit different. They are definitely moving faster than they should. I believe lighting should slow them and we want to avoid any fire based attacks. Though I think they are immune to magic, no they are immune to magic that allows spell resistance."He nods to himself having remembered all that from their last encounter.

He will take this round to cast Bless on everyone. OOC, I'm assuming we are in rounds now, and at 600 feet distance we have some time still.

'Osul shares the buffs (check the link and everyone should benefit from Mass Bear's Endurance and Mass Cat's Grace). He has an idea, and it works fine at a distance, so he gains some altitude, and tries to see when or how often the Golems are walking within a 160' diameter circle.
