[Everybody take 900 XP for the previous scene.]

Zazu asks Tal for his story. "My name is Taletherian Laethelys," he says. "I'm called Tal. My parents are Galeron and Nebora Lethelys. We have a farm right on the river, and Papa has a boat he sometimes uses to ferry people across." He looks around. "I don't know who these people are. They told me they took me because my Papa wouldn't do what they wanted, but they didn't tell me what that was."

Ash starts collecting gear. If you take the gear from the prisoners, as well as the gear from the fallen, the total loot list is: 3 potions of cure light wounds, 5 potions of cure moderate wounds 2 potions of invisibility, potion of fly, scroll of fog cloud, anchor feather token, 4 +1 studded leather, +1 chain shirt, ring of protection +1, 2 +1 elf-bane arrows, 2 masterwork kukris, 2 masterwork composite longbows, 2 composite longbows, 4 rapiers, longbow, trident, 400 gp.

Beech and Lothlo are more concerned with the information you just received. Lothlo asks whether the higher-ups would be the ones who know where to find Myre.

The skirmisher called Kivesan rolls his eyes. "You aren't getting it," he says. "Nobody in the Guild knows where to find this Myre person. If she even exists. The Guild didn't take her. Never did take her. Never did have her." His companions try to hush him, but he is having none of it.

I continue dismantling the cell and loading the bars onto cuddly mule. These will be useful for our own last enforcement, but I suspect will need to eventually add a magic nullifying ability in the future. For the time being I don't think anyone with such skills will waste them on a community with limited resources.

ooc: I have the ring of protection from the past loot.

I quickly look over the loot. Much if it is not of much use to me while others have potential in the right situations.

You guys can have the weapons and armor...I'm thinking about swearing them off, and I already have a ring. (starting next level I cannot use manufactured weapons and am already limited to druid weapons and armor.) I can make use of the potions, scroll if fog cloud, and feather token if that helps.

Beech goes over to the one who's talking, "So, you are saying that those who kidnapped our friend, and claimed to be Guild members on official business are not currently members or are trying to hostilely split the Guild or set us up to come into conflict with you.
Well, As you can see we are occupying this general area of the Wood and will be for quite some time. This information that there are imposters pretending to be Guild members or a faction trying to hurt the Guild's reputation is worth knowing. We did approach you, that's true. We may also have been itching for a conflict, that is also true, but one of yours started hostilities and now we've ended them.
If what you've said is true, then the Guild is not our enemy. Give me a good reason why I should let you go and warn the guild of either the renegade faction of the Guild or the Imposters out here stirring up trouble the Guild wants no part of."

"What do you know of Thomo and his goons? He said he was working for the guild. When captured he asked that we seek one of the guilds 'lawyers'. That sounds like some guild affiliation to me." Ash crosses her arms. "We still have one of them as a prisoner. Perhaps we should bring you to him and see if anyone is willing to speak. See whose story starts to fall apart."

Ash then tries a different approach.

"Now, if you want us to believe you here and now, would you be willing to allow me to cast a spell on you? Something that would help us to know the truth. Don't worry. It wouldn't hurt you and wouldn't be permanent. In fact, if it shows you have been truthful with us then all the better for you."

Grindar has no need for any of the gear except maybe the ring of protection, but as the new comer, he doesn't make his need known. So when Lothlo asks for it, he has no complaints, and gives his hearty approval. Actually, he kinda likes the idea of his new friends being better protected, as he is the type who would rather sacrifice himself for the safety of others.

You lie so easily and so often it's really a pain trying to figure out if you are finally being honest with us. While one could almost believe you aren't responsible, the claim that the guild knows nothing about her his hard to believe considering how public the events surrounding the kidnapping were, and the fact that even if the guild didn't do it they would still want to find out exactly who was moving into their raquetes and so close to their illegal camp. Plus your friends clearly are trying to shut you up... which usually indicates you know more than nothing.

Lothlo tries to determine exactly how much of what is being said is true and what part the others seem to be agitated about more information being leaked about.

Much of the talk is now about the loot you have collected, but Beech, Ash, and Lothlo continue to question the prisoners.

Beech begins, "So, you are saying...." and when he finishes, Kivesan replies. "No. I'm not saying anything besides what I said. We don't have Myre. We never had Myre. We aren't the ones who took Myre."

Ash requests to cast a spell. "Cast it if you think it'll help," Kivesan replies.

Lothlo is skeptical, but as far as he can tell Kivesan is being honest. He can't be very high-level in the Guild, though--perhaps he just isn't in on all their operations. He doesn't seem to be lying, though. You can also tell that the others are trying to hush him because they're afraid they're all going to get in trouble with the higher-ups.

I let Zazu continue with the diplomatic pursuits. I'm smart enough to know how many times I've gotten lucky at me attempts with diplomacy and would prefer the group remember that... No, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm actually terrified what the group would think if they realize that speaking to people terrifies me. Who ever heard of a hero that feels more comfortable talking to a rabbit than her companions.

When Zazu mentions the tents I point over towards cuddly mule. I walk over and run my fingers through her soft curly hair. I've already packed to the tents and bed rolls as well as the bars for the cells. I might not have a gilded tongue, but living in Hellsmar had made me a expert in scavenging resources and surviving in the wild.

Ash is in agreement with Zazu and Naithi. Anything that can be scavenged from this camp - right down to the pots and pans - will be coming with them. She debates taking the boots of the captives, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Probably.

She gathers the group to speak out of earshot of the prisoners. "Well, what do we think? Are they telling the truth? I could cast a Charm Person spell on Kivesan. He said I could, though I'm not sure what else we'll learn."

She doesn't particularly mind if the captives are released if they turn their ways. "Uh just putting this out there but if any are looking for a fresh start, should we, you know, invite them back to the settlement? It would be the good thing to do. Besides, they might prove a useful source of information and also help in terms of defense"

There is that one big question though: Where is Myre?

When back with the thieves, Grindar asks, "I believe you when you say you don't have our friend, but I have to ask if you have heard any rumors or any such thing that may lead us to her whereabouts? I know that people in your line of work often hear things, so I figured I'd ask."

And we protect our people. You see how devoted we are to finding Myre and showing that we take a hard stand against threats to our people. Join us and see! But only if you are willing to give up crime!"

Very privately to the group, Zazu says, "We can try our best to get these guys to reform, but if any of them just will not, if they are devoted to evil, then as the law in this part of the Wold, we gotta protect innocents and kill them. It's the right thing to do."

[OOC: Killing irredeemable prisoners is not evil and is a reasonable reaction to a harsh situation.]

Privately, "We are actually legally entitled to enforcing the Laws of the region? As to inviting them to join, they'd need to be watched for a while, until we are positive they can be trusted. And they should be informed they are being watched, doing otherwise would be a bad thing."

I believe them... but I don't think they will want to join us. They seem to be pretty afraid of what the higher ups in the guild will do if they spill too much information. Feels like they aren't about to turn their backs on the guild.

Zazu asks why they have Tal, and whether they are kidnappers. "Yeah, we snatched him," Kivesan replies. You ask why the camp looks big enough for more people. "There were more people," Kivesan replies. "We heard you coming. You set off the traps. The non-fighters lit out, like they were supposed to."

Naithi, meanwhile, is packing tents and bedrolls and other useful items onto Cuddly Mule.

Ash offers a Charm Person, and asks whether you should invite the surviving rogues to Freedom's Landing.

Grindar seconds Ash's suggestion, and asks the captured rogues if they've heard any rumors about Myre. Kivesan hasn't. Surprisingly, one of the archers speaks up. "I heard she got snatched by something big," he says. "Something we don't want to mess with. But I don't know what."

You discuss the possibility of inviting them to join you at Freedom's Landing. They don't look very enthused about the possibility.

Naithi asks why they have a feather token. Actually, the token was taken off of Chain Shirt. Your prisoners explain that sometimes when a DM is writing a module in a big hurry, and needs NPCs, she copies some over from the NPC codex. And if, say, a nautically-themed NPC is of the right level and has the abilities she's looking for, she grabs him and tweaks his abilities to suit her adventure, and sometimes doesn't get around to tweaking his magic items.

"It may be safer for you to come with us, but we won't force you to." Ash says to the prisoners "Just know that we are taking in those who have no other home."

She gives them a moment to ponder the offer again before continuing calmly. "Now, who told you she got snatched and where can we find them?"

Grindar affirms Ash's suggestion that it may be safer for the thieves to join them, and her insistence that it be voluntary. He says, "I know it may not seem like much to you, but I will personally fight to the death to defend those under my care. and right now our little community is under my care, as well as the care of my friends here. If you join our community, it will mean hard work, but it will also mean that you will be a part of a community that looks out for one another, as a opposed to your current community, that kills those who they feel have failed them somehow. Of course your 3rd option would to live a life on the run, hiding from the thieves guild, but honestly, how long do you think you can stay ahead of them, and do you really want to live like that?"

Grindar waits for an answer, as well as for anymore information the thieves may have about Myre.

Zazu waits to see what the captured rogues will decide. If they seem unsure, the elf asks the key question: "Will you foreswear evil and either go on your way or join us in our community?"

After they have answered, Zazu talks privately with the other PCs about the need to kill any that refuse to give up their criminal ways.

"No," says Kivesan. "I'd rather take my chances. I hear Izen is lovely this time of year."

The archers, too, seem to prefer heading out on their own. All three are willing to promise not to do evil.

You ask the archer who told him about Myre being snatched, but he honestly doesn't remember. It was a bit of gossip, and he's not even sure it's true. You sense that he is being honest.

You have been ignoring the young elf called Tal for some time now.

Realizing they have got all they could out of the thieves, Grindar says, "Well, if you are promising to reform your ways, then I'm OK with you going your merry way, assuming my friends are on the same page. Just so you know, the Tree of Parting is located in the Izen, and a very powerful band of adventures dwells there, so if you plan on moving there you may wish to really reform, or you may have to deal with them."

With that concluded, Grindar turns to the kid, "So what's your story Tal, why where you abducted?"

As Grindar talks to the former thieves and captive I climb back on Camalayas back. If you all wait a bit I can fix us up something good to eat. Might even be enough that you can bring some left overs with you... Oh, and if you are leaving and swear to amend you ways you can have your tent and bedrolls back. Just let me know which are yours. I'll also give you some slings so you have some protection.
(Note that Naithi has 30 slings in her inventory in a variety of sizes. If communal rather than personal sized, she will give them one to share.)

You end up letting the captives go, after giving them bedrolls, slings, and a tent. They don't look too happy, but they seem to understand things could have gone much, much worse for them.

Meanwhile, Grindar asks Tal why he was abducted. "I'm not sure," he replies. He does speak Common, albeit with a heavy elvish accent. "They said it was because of my Papa. He wasn't doing what they wanted him to do."

Ash asks whether he is hurt, but he is not.

Lothlo asks how far away his home is. "It is on the river," he replies. "Three or four hours from here? I think." He still looks a little scared. "Are--are you going to take me back there? They will be so worried...."

Returning with the meat and herbs I begin to prepare the meal. Although I didn't find anything exotic, there is enough wild game to go around. A quickly filet the random assortment of raccoon, pheasant, grouse, and squirrel. The choice bits I fry up with salt and pepper fur people to snack on while the rest slowly simmers with wild vegetables.

As the scent wafts up I explain, I didn't have any beef stock, but I did bring along some red wine, so Wild Game Bourguignon it is. The meat will tenderize in the wine and blend perfectly with the mushrooms. (For those unfamiliar with the dish, picture a French stew using wine instead of broth/stock for the base)

As I cook I listen to the others talk.

"Pretty good food.... Thanks. We should get Tal home and see what kind of trouble is being caused there...."
Beech gathers up a couple of his broken arrows and takes the metal arrow heads and buries them around the camp site, one of them he makes sure to pound into the ground near the campfire, that way if he does decide to scry on the location, he has a item near where most things would be discussed, and quit possibly inside any shield they'd cast to keep out any scrying attempt.

Naithi decides to prepare a meal requiring a slow simmer. This will take anywhere from two to three hours. If you want to do that, you can, but you might not be able to get Tal back to his home before dark.

Naithi also tries to determine whether Tal is really a victim or a clever bandit. He would have to be clever indeed, to lock himself in a cell before the fight even started. Zazu can tell you about the rescue.

Lothlo asks for details. "I really don't know more than what I told you," Tal replies. "I know Mama and Papa were worried about something, but they would not tell me what it was."

Zazu and Naithi want to take the time to rest and recover spells, but Beech and Ash are ready to go now.

"I need to go home," Tal says. "Mama and Papa will worry if I'm gone the night. I should go back."

It's becoming clear that if you decide to stay here and rest, he intends to head out on his own.

Zazu asks Tal about Myre, but he hasn't seen her and hasn't heard anything about her. "Did they take her?" he asks. "Like me?"

The group don't have any pack animals or the like to help the young lad. He looks fit enough to walk though. Ash casts Prestidigitation to help clean Tal and his clothes. "There. I always feel a little better in nice clean things" She offers fresh water to those who are thirsty.

Ash will walk alongside the boy and chat about different things to distract him from the days events - maybe even cheer him up.

You decide, on balance, to take Tal home right away. Naithi decides to cook in her magic pan. Ash helps Tal get cleaned up and offers water to anyone who needs it.

As Grindar travels he keeps his ax at the ready, and his eyes open. (perception 17) He sings about how he met Succotash Slenderstick as a child, when the then halfling paladin, now halfling cleric, helped saved their village from a marauding band of hill giants, and how his heroics saved his father Grindor's life, and the village. He wrote the song himself, years ago, and seems to have a decent handle on the tune. (performance 15)

Beech, listens to the song. He gets the gist of the history, he knows some of his mothers history, and he knows that surrounding the castle dropped by the Lake, but most of his mom's acquaintances have moved on and very few visit. He has hear the townsfolk talk about the devil frog attack and the massive explosions that eliminated the most of them.... And The Heroes of Black Bird Lake closing in and finishing them off, saving the town itself.
Maybe he should try writing about it, he's not much of a singer... the story got bigger every time he heard it....
