Silken's final words galvanize the group. Lothlo is convinced the Thieves' Guild is evil. Zazu asks Tal how far to his parents' place, but he's not sure. Maybe half a mile?
A few of you start to sprint, but realize that's going to be impractical over a longer distance. You settle in to a hustle, pushing as hard as you can without wearing yourselves out.
When you arrive at the Lathelys farm, you are breathing hard, but still fit for action. To your relief, everything seems normal. The farmhouse sitting beside the placid river is built in the elven style, incorporating both stone and living wood. A thin trickle of smoke rises from the chimney. On the far side of the river, a small group of people is waiting to cross. An elf man, presumably Tal's father, is poling a flat-bottomed boat across the river to where they wait.
Before you can say or do anything, Tal is running toward the house. "Mama! Mama!" he calls. "I'm back! I'm all right!"

There is a very slim chance that she was just teaching us a lesson, but the Thieve's Guild has never shown that level of... not being evil for the sake of evil. Keep you eyes open.
Do you think it's less dangerous to call out a warning to Tal's father, or should we try to close the distance before giving them a chance to act?

She smiles and waves to the boy's father. She wants to make it VERY clear they weren't the ones who took him!

Despite the peaceful scene, Lothlo remains suspicious, certain the Thieves' Guild is up to no good.
Naithi rushes forward to try to stop Tal from discovering something gruesome.
Grindar smells something fishy. It's probably the river. [Sorry; I couldn't resist.]
Beech readies an attack.
Ash smiles and waves to the boy's father. Since he is in the middle of the river, poling his boat to the other side, it is difficult to catch his attention. He doesn't quite seem to have heard what you said, but he stops poling long enough to turn and look at you.
Meanwhile, an elf woman comes out of the house, and rushes to embrace Tal. "Taletherian!" she cries, half relieved, half scolding. "Where have you been? We were so worried about you! What happened?"
Tal begins to explain. As he speaks, Lothlo and Ash notice that there are some bubbles near the raft. No, a lot of bubbles. Before you have a chance to call out, a---creature of some kind---has broken the surface and is now flying next to the raft! It has a bulbous fungoid lump for a head, spiny insectoid wings, and a tangle of spiky, clawed legs.
On the raft, Tal's father cries out in alarm and nearly drops the pole!

At the sight of the creature she moves to position herself between it and Tal and his mother. She still has a few spells at her disposal but the first thing is to keep these people safe.

Zazu rushes forward about 30 ft, then casts a Minor Image spell, creating an illusionary thorny hedge that rises from the water. The spell specifies "four 10-ft. cubes + one 10-ft. cube/level" -- I'm hoping I can do 70x5x20 high. The hedge is thick and blocks vision, as well as looking painful with those long thorns.
Zazu shouts to the man on the boat, "Come in here to shore! We'll protect you."

Grindar hustles over (double move), while drawing a javelin, and yells at the whatever it is, trying to get it's attention. He tries to remember if he has seen or heard of such a creature before, (knowledge nature 23, 26 if it's a giant) as he, through a heroic effort, hurls a javelin at the beast, hitting AC 18 (20 if it's a giant), inflicting 7 (9 if it's a giant) damage.
OOC... Accidentally hit the mouse button twice when rolling knowledge check, so used the roll for the attack roll. With a javelin, Grindar gets +6, so I added one to the +5 roll.

Grindar knows that this thing is a Mi-Go, a kind of plant not native to this world. They have DR 5/slashing and resist both electricity and fire. He fires a shot, but the Mi-Go is very nimble and the arrow flies wide.
Beech fires a shot, but misses.
Lothlo looks around, but sees no other foes. He fires two shots at the creature. They both hit, but don't seem to do any damage.
Naithi....something....a dolphin. Sorry, that post is missing a verb and I don't know what it is. If it's a Summoning spell, that's a full-round action.
The creature--which Grindar can tell you is called a Mi-Go--acts. Its claw lashes out at the helpless man in the boat, opening up a large gash down one arm. Worse, the claw latches on, and Galeron is now grappled! Confused, he tries to turn his boat around, and just ends up sideways in the river, at the mercy of the current.
Grindar can share the details of the creature's DR and resistance. Other people can make Nature checks to see if they can learn more about it.

Seeing a fight between a strange monster and unarmed human, the dolphin jumps into action and bull rushes the monster.
Cmb beats cmd 20. Note the monster is grappling, so I'm assuming it has -4 Dex/-2CMD. Since a grappling creature needs to use part of it's action to move the grappling enemy, I'm hoping this means it has to let go of him

If the dolphin is successful in breaking the grapple Naithi will cast flaming sphere and direct it at the monster.
If not, Camalayas will drink the potion and attempt to jump across...and falls short, only making it 15 ft across. Seeing she won't close the gap, I jump off her back and close the last 10 feet. (If for some reason Naithi also falls short and will swim the rest of the way and climb on the raft.
Flaming Sphere = 12dmg to enemy Camalayas jump = 18 (15ft, falls into water) Naithi jump = 10 (10ft, is on the raft)

No, we are not keeping it, even if you promise to feed it and brush it and walk it every day. She tries to remember anything she may have heard about these creatures, but comes up blank.
Grindar dives into the river and begins to swim. It is slow going; a successful Swim check allows you to swim half your speed as a full-round action. You get a short distance from shore.
Zazu tries to cast Mage Armor, reasoning that an enemy mage wouldn't bother to counter it. Alas, he has miscalculated. The spell is countered.
Naithi's dolphin pops into being under the raft, and promptly bull rushes the creature. Its attempt fails however, as the creature stands (or kind of hovers, really) its ground. Naithi therefore gives a potion to Camalayas, who jumps but falls short. Naithi jumps the rest of the way.
Beech fires a shot, which flies wide of its target.
Lothlo can't do slashing damage, so the obvious solution is just to hit it harder. He fires two shots, and the first one hits. The creature takes its first damage.
Galeron struggles, but can't escape the creature's grasp. The raft drifts a little in the current, which seems to throw off the creature; at any rate, it loses the grapple. Galeron collapses to the bottom of the boat.

Ash picks up a rock and tosses it to where she heard the sound of someone casting a counterspell against Zazu. Either the person is very well hidden or they are doing the same thing that the party sometimes does: hide behind an illusion. She wants to see if she can still see the rock or whether it disappears when it lands.
Perception 13 Move action: Pick up a rock or stick or something to that effect Standard action: Throw it where she heard the sound of someone trying to counterspell. Lothlo realizes he has no clue about this creature and wonders whether this is another lesson of the Thieve's Guild about acting without thinking. He calls out to the creature.
On the off chance you understand what I'm saying, please leave the helpless man on the raft alone and just leave in peace.
Knowing this will almost certainly fail, Lothlo instead tries to rely on his keep eye. As he takes his next shot he will again look for signs there is another person here and target them first. If not, he will pay extra attention to the monster for signs it is not what it appears to be (it's not often that creatures not form the Wold are found on the Wold). Lothlo finds a clear line of sight, pulls out another arrow, and takes aim at the creature one more time.

Ash tosses a rock where she heard a voice counterspelling. The rock lands in some long grass, hiding it from sight. The long grass seems to really be there, but it's only about 6 inches deep. Surely--surely, there can't be a person concealed there?
Grindar arrives at the raft and climbs up onto it.
Lothlo fires a shot that hits. Like Ash, he heard the counterspell coming from long grass that doesn't seem long enough to conceal a person.
The Mi-Go attacks! Two of its claws slash at Galeron, and the man drops to the floor of the boat, bleeding and unconscious. The other two claws attack Grindar, but miss.

Unless Camalayas has some way of picking him up, you'll need to wait until next round to get him to safety. Also, how are you communicating with the dolphin?
Normally, a summoned creature attacks your enemies. If you want it to do something else, you need to be able to communicate with it. The dolphin is capable of pushing the boat, but it needs to somehow understand that's what you want.
Ash's action can only go off if we figure out how Naithi is communicating with the dolphin.
Beech fires at the creature, but alas, the die roller lets him down. DMs are never supposed to roll for players, and my roll demonstrates why. Sorry.
Grindar attacks! His primary doesn't hit, but the off-hand attack does. All the slashing damage gets through.
Lothlo fires twice and hits twice, doing damage even through the creature's reduction.
Zazu isn't sure what to do, so he remains where he is for the moment.
Grindar has succeeded in drawing the creature's attention, and now it attacks him! And your DM rolls no better for the bad guys than she rolls for the good guys, so at least it's all even.
And the map. I put the boat (and Grindar and Galeron and Naithi and Camalayas) back in the river because I'm still not sure how Naithi is communicating with the dolphin. We can always move it back again.

OOC: I cannot communicate with the dolphin. I interpreted the post after the dolphin's attack to mean that the dolphin couldn't reach the creature because it was hovering. If the dolphin can't reach the enemy, or if it's attack fails with a natural 18, then I figure the dolphin would be more likely to try to save the unconscious victim than do nothing or to keep attacking in hopes of rolling a natural 20. Sorry, I didn't read the part that a summoned creature normally attacks the enemy. I'm but used to using summoned creatures.

First thing first. They need to get those on the boat safe. Ash takes a rope from her pack and while holding one end of it, tosses the rest over the boat. The plan being that she's normally a terrible throw and hitting the boat directly would be tricky. Best to aim too far and let Grindar grab it when it falls across the boat.

The whole time he keeps himself between the mi-go, plus whatever is hiding in the grass, and the ferryman.

Lothlo notices that the monster that was attacking them is still feet away, in the general vicinity of where a member of the thieves guild is suspected to be. He decided for the moment it's best to take note of the warning Silken and the thieves guild gave and not keep pushing, but he readies two more arrows in case the Thieve's guild insists on more bloodshed.

Thinking quickly, Ash grabs a rope and tosses it toward the boat. Grindar retrieves it and begins pulling the boat toward the shore.
There is some concern for Galeron, but Naithi reminds her companions that he's been given a healing potion. He is not conscious, but he is stable, so you have time to get him to shore.
Zazu calls an invitation to talk, which doesn't seem to be accepted. Lothlo keeps arrows ready, but they are not needed.
The Mi-Go retrieves something from the tall grass--some kind of jar or container. It's difficult to see it clearly--but is that a brain inside it? The wounded Mi-Go flies away.
The boat is not yet back to shore, but the danger seems to be past. Tal and Nebora race to the water's edge, anxiously watching the boat as it comes back to shore.

Together, you bring the boat in to shore. Ash casts a healing spell, and Galeron sits up, conscious but still wounded. You help him out of his boat.
The would-be passengers on the other side of the river, who had been waiting for the ferry, have scattered. You see no sign of them now. Perhaps they'll come back later; perhaps they won't.
Nebora takes some time to make sure her husband and son are all right. Well, that they could be a lot worse. "Yes," she says at your suggestion. "Yes, let's go inside. And you must stay for supper."
You all troop into the farmhouse. There are a lot of you, but the kitchen table is large, and enough chairs are scrounged up for everyone. Nebora bustles about, finishing the meal, while Tal sets the table and directs you to where you can wash your hands.
As she works, Nebora fills you in on the basics. "Those people," she says. "They started coming around here about a month ago. They'd heard of Galeron, you see, that he ferries people across the river in his boat. They wanted him to move some cargo for them. The whole thing smelled, didn't it, Galeron? So we told them no. They asked again, we said no again. We thought that was the end of it."
Galeron, seated at the table, takes up the tale. "We got a note today," he says. "If we wanted to see our son again, we'd do as they said." His voice is shaking with--grief? anger? both? It's hard to say. "Of course we were going to agree. We'd have agreed to anything to get Tal back safe. But he's back safe anyway, thank the gods."
Nebora begins setting food on the table. "Help yourselves," she says. "There's plenty. And now we'd like to hear your tale. Where was Tal, and how did you find him?"

I don't want to uproot unless we absolutely have to." And indeed, on your way in you saw natural gardens, a couple of outbuildings, and of course the house. It would be a lot to leave behind.
Ash suggests that you stay the night. "Yes, you must," Nebora says firmly. "It's getting late, and we don't want to send you out into the dark. You are welcome to stay."
Grindar and Beech eat silently. Naithi wonders aloud about the brain in the jar, but so far, nobody has any insight. Lothlo ponders the nature of this latest adventure.
Zazu asks what exactly these people wanted them to do. Nebora looks puzzled, but repeats the information. "They wanted us to move cargo for them."
"The didn't say what cargo," Galeron adds. "Or how much, or when. I assume they would have gotten around to that part once we'd agreed."
When the meal is over, Nebora begins washing up while Tal shows you places you can sleep. There is room in front of the kitchen hearth, or in the barn's hayloft if you prefer.
Galeron leaves for a moment and comes back holding a wooden box. "I've had this for a while," he says. "I had ideas of running my own ferry service. But the fact is, there's not enough traffic through here and anyway, I'm a farmer now. Well, mostly. But since this isn't doing us any good, I'd like you to have it. In gratitude for saving our boy. We don't have much, but you're welcome to this."
When you examine the box, you realize that it is a Folding Boat.

Lothlo sees that they are indeed pretty firmly established here, and hopes they can give them some advice to help them from stepping on any more toes. You have been here a while, any chance you can tell us anything about the political factions here? Are there any other factions that are as purely evil as the Thieves Guild? Or any that you feel are actually trustworthy?
Lothlo then turns to his weary friends. I can take first watch, let those that need a rest get some sleep. Silken seemed to apply that this was a warning, so hopefully they feel their message came across loud and clear already.
DM Kathy Wednesday June 23rd, 2021 12:07:41 AM Ash is hesitant to accept the Folding Boat, but you can see that the farm is already pretty well established, and the Laethelys family seem to be living a pretty comfortable life. Besides, as Nebora points out, Tal is far more valuable than any boat.
Lothlo asks for help in navigating the political factions, but the Laethelys family don't know much. "Most of that is away in the city," Nebora says. "We don't go up there more than once or twice a year, so I'm afraid we don't know many people there."
The rest of you are more concerned with setting watches and making sure you are undisturbed in the night. There seems to be a slight preference for the hayloft, so you wind up there, keeping watches and perhaps setting snares ahead of time.
Your rest is undisturbed, however, and you awaken refreshed.

In the morning, Ash, Grindar, and Beech help with breakfast. Grindar chops wood. Nebora sets Ash to pitting fresh strawberries. Beech takes charge of the porridge.
Lothlo is a bit disappointed to find tea to drink instead of coffee, but the breakfast is delicious and filling. When it is done, you exchange final pleasantries and depart.

We should probably heed Silken's advice and make sure we aren't doing anything to anger the Thieve's Guild. Besides, if they did have Myre, any more rash actions on our part would be putting her in direct danger after that warning. I think we should head back for now, see how the construction is going.
As the group departs Lothlo keeps an eye out for Silken or any other Thieves Guild members that might be lurking near by. Perception = 26

You realize that you are no closer to finding Myre. Indeed, you might be said to be further away, since it's beginning to look like the Thieves' Guild never had her in the first place.
Ash suggests following the mi-go, but as Grindar points out, it flew away and didn't leave tracks.
Really, it seems like your best option is to return to Freedom's Landing, so you set off in that direction. Galeron rows you across the river, and you walk the few miles along the southern bank until you reach your brand-new town.
Little has changed since you left, which makes sense as it's only been about a day. The townsfolk appear to have been organized into work crews; some are clearing brush, some are fishing, some seem to be making baskets. They exclaim and wave to you as you come into view.

Grindar is a bit disappointed that no resolution seems to have been found. As a person of action, this seemingly lack of action has him feeling a bit glum. He is happy that he, along with his new friends were able to rescue Tal, and save Tal's father life, but it doesn't take someone well trained in sensing motives to realize the half-orc isn't satisfied with the outcome. Cotton, sensing her master's off emotions, nuzzles up against the big half-orc, trying to cheer him up. "Good girl" Grindar says as he scratches the albino rapke behind the ears,"I'll be OK, I'm just a little dissatisfied with the out come of our last expedition, but I'm sure we will see things made right eventually."

Back in town, Naithi unloads, while Lothlo checks on the buildings. The emphasis now seems to be on gathering building material so the lyre will have something to work with.
Grindar is dissatisfied with the outcome, but perhaps the next adventure will be more rewarding.
Zazu is pleased with the Folding Boat, and invites the Laethelys family to stay in touch. [OOC: there's no hamlet. It's literally a family farm, on the river, where people can cross. And yes, you can add them to NPC contacts if you like.]
The rest of the day passes with the mundane tasks of unpacking, seeing to gear, examining loot, and perhaps helping out around the town. There is some discussion of which trees to fell in order to make room for buildings--and of course, use for lumber.

I think a system of tripwires and alarms all around the place, plus getting some people trained as druids or getting wands of Entangle or Brahmah's Tattoos of Entangle will get the job done."

Previously we talked about planting thorny bushes (with edible fruit) around the town and expanding them with plant growth. We could them use them as a natural defense to slow and injure enemies, and the effect can be enhanced with magic.

Grindar chips in where ever his strength is needed most. When Naithi mentions the protective hedge that would double as a food source, Grindar likes that idea a lot saying, "While it's true that walls can easily be breached with both magical and mundane means, having some sort of protective barrier would protect from many dangers, most notably wild animals. I like the idea of a protective barrier that doubles as a food source, and would sleep easier knowing our community has some sort of protection, while we are away."

Greetings Woldians!
We have TWO games that have achieved Level 20 and just retired over the weekend! So in our usual tradition, we're holding a celebration for the next few days on the Giggling Ghost board!
Folks are already beginning to gather. We expect everyone to join in and post daily on the GG board, but all are excused from posting in their "regular career game" through Wednesday at least. :) It doesn't mean you can't post, just that you don't have to.
DMs if you're in combat, feel free to just post a "pause until after Wednesday" if you'd like, or you can do that anyway. These celebrations are important as both of these games have players who have been working for at least 9 years to achieve this retirement for their PCs.
--DMs may take the role of an NPC or 2 if they wish and hand out dishes, create action, help out, etc. --Anyone may take the stage and tell a story or sing a song. --Post as many times a day as you'd like on the Giggling Ghost board.

Ash goes and checks in on each of the townsfolk that she's familiar with. She wants to see how everyone is doing - not just the town as a whole. Is anyone doing it particularly tough, and if so, is there anything she can do to help?
She'll touch base with her adepts - Mike and Brianna - and also with Murzush to get a sense of how the orcs are feeling.

Though now that I think about it, safer sleeping quarters and flood prevention are probably a better starting point
