The Enemy of My Enemy

DM Kathy
Thursday July 1st, 2021 10:17:30 PM

[Everybody take 550 XP for the previous scene.]

Upon your return to Freedom's Landing, you begin thinking about how the town will take shape. Zazu has a number of ideas. Beech suggests a Catacombs entrance. Lothlo suggests a protective wall, and Naithi suggests a living wall with thorns and edible fruit. Grindar endorses the idea.

Ash makes a point of finding townsfolk doing difficult tasks and giving them a hand. You end up doing a fair amount of laundry--not very glamorous, perhaps, but very necessary.

A few days pass. More wood is gathered, and building commences on a good-sized building near the river. It will serve as a bunkhouse at first, then change to a kind of town hall as more houses get built. With the help of the lyre, progress is very quick.

Three days after the battle at the Laethelys farm, a stranger approaches you. He is a human man of about 30, with brown hair and brown eyes. He seems to know who you are. "My name is Willis Campion," he says. "I have some important matters I would like to discuss with you. Is there someplace we can speak in private? Or, if this is not a convenient time, can we arrange to meet later?"

Important matters? Have the kidnappers finally decided to make their demands?
Lothlo looks over the guy and tries to figure out any details he can about this man, and whether he should expect scrupulous lowlife looking for an excuse to draw blood.

We're happy to talk out of earshot of others, but I would prefer to stay in full view of the villagers if that's ok with you. We've had some craziness here lately and I'd prefer to take steps to make sure things stay peaceful and friendly. Oh, and I'd take it as a kindness if you keep your hands where we can see them, our village has had recent issues with visitors attacking with concealed weapons.

Beech examines the stranger. He is well-dressed in sober colors without a lot of ornamentation. He carries a traveler's pack; you aren't sure what gear might be in it. The only weapon you see is a dagger at his belt.

Grindar expresses an interest in hearing what the stranger has to say.

Zazu leads the group over near the river, where the noise of the river will help hide the conversation. Lothlo makes sure to stay in sight of the town and asks the stranger to keep his hands where you can see them.

"Of course," he replies. "I mean you no harm."

When you reach the spot near the river, he continues. "Your recent work has not gone unnoticed. Rescuing that elf lad, putting an end to the thieves' camp, defeating that monster. Very impressive. You are to be congratulated."

Naithi guesses he did not come all this way just to congratulate you, and Zazu says that your goal is to allow free people to be safe. Lothlo asks who besides the Thieves' Guild has noticed your activities.

"Ah, yes, the Thieves' Guild," Campion replies. "They are becoming a problem, and you are not the only one who thinks so. However, I'm sure you understand that not everyone who opposes them chooses to be as--forthcoming--about it as your group." He pauses. Grindar considers reminding Zazu that he had never been a slave, but allows the minor over-look to slip by unnoticed. Unlike his friends, he is a little proud of the fact that their actions are getting noticed, not because he thinks he is anything special, but because it means their actions and words will start holding weight, and hopefully fear of them, in the eyes of those who would act unjustly, and with contempt for all things good, would lead to less need for bloodshed and violence. Grindar nods his head, in agreement, as Ash gives Willis permission to reach into his pack, though he keeps his eyes open for any threats. (Perception 21) He doesn't miss trust the stranger, per say, but the welfare, and protection, of his new pack, he considers his 1st priority. Before he even began his life as an adventurer, Grindar made a decision to put the lives of any future pack-mates, as well as the lives of the innocent above his own, and though he has no desire to die, he will gladly take an arrow for someone else, if the need arises.

Beech and Naithi want to know what the rings might signify, or whether others might recognize them as having some affiliation or other. Campion shakes his head. After listening to the answer to Ash's excellent question, Zazu says, "Well, it has been kind of you to visit. Thank you and good day."

Meanwhile, the mention that the rings have individual designs makes Zazu wonder ... could each individual ring be tracked or scried? Zazu wonders whether the rings could be tracked or scried. Possibly. A Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana check might tell you more.

Grindar asks Campion to state his business. "My business is all but concluded," he says. "I was to congratulate you, assure you that you are not alone, and pass along these tokens of appreciation. If you have further questions, I will answer to the best of my ability, but as you say, you have much to do."

Beech selects a ring and slips it into his pocket, planning to investigate it further.

Lothlo asks whether Campion's employer is an upstanding member of society. "Indeed yes," he replies. "A person of some influence who holds a position of trust."

Naithi senses that Campion is on the up-and-up, and selects a ring.

The rings, as Campion said, have different designs on them. No two are alike, and they represent many different styles--elven and human and even dwarf. Most have some plant-related design etched around them--leaves or flowers or ferns. Others have different designs. One has leaping fish. One has an abstract design that doesn't seem to depict anything, but looks very dwarven. Two are plain.

With the Wand of Daylight being the single most expensive item in the haul, Ash is in favor of selling it. A few people in the group can cast other types of light spells already that should get the job done. If need be she's happy to buy it for herself as a scroll just in case.

She has kept a separate list of the items the group have collected both for the town and for those the party are sharing.

With the departure of Willis Campion, the heroes' attention turns to the loot they recovered. Some of the mundane items, such as tents, bedrolls, pots, and pans, might be of use to the people of Freedom's Landing. Some of the magical and combat gear will be of more use to the heroes.

The discussion continues.

Nightingale (JonS)
Wednesday July 14th, 2021 1:13:15 AM

Having followed the group of butterflies Queen Maab had sent to guide her, Nightingale began to find signs of human habitation. Trees had been cut, brush cleared, and firepits made and then cleaned. Humming a tune to herself, she began following her nose, following the scent of woodsmoke. As the sound of people began to get closer, the butterflies scattered and left. Nightingale moved to the edge of the forest and looked out upon, well, perhaps the beginnings of a new community.

(OOC: Hopefully this works the ways its supposed to)

The party have had run-ins with strangers now - one good, one perhaps not so good. It's not going to stop Ash from welcoming folks to the settlement though. Everyone needs a place to call home. That was one of the founding principles of Freedom's Landing.

Ash spots the newcomer and raises her hand in a sign of welcome. "Hi there! I'm Ash! Are you passing through or looking to settle? Perhaps you'd like to sit with us and have some tea first?" She gestures to a nearby fire, inviting the stranger to join her.

When Nightingale gets closer Ash will speak a little quieter so as not to alarm anyone. "If you are with the thieves guild you should know that we won't be scared off. If you aren't with the thieves guild, how would you like your tea?"

A rather tall, and very muscular half-orc, with a orc double ax strapped to his back wearing a breastplate made from an iridescent green material, walks up and stands behind Ash. By his side is an obviously albino creature that appears to be a cross between a horse and a lizard (DC 20 knowledge nature reveals it's a rapke, a creature found only in the Sargrass Plains, located in the southern continent.) The albino creature is wearing studded leather barding, with the studs made from the same iridescent material. (The iridescent material is actually the caprice of a giant beetle.) The half-orc introduces himself, "Welcome, it appears we have another guest, its very shady to meet you! Hopefully your a little more forth coming than our last one, not a big fan of the whole shrouded in mystery types. Anyway, may name is Grindar, son of Grindor, and my albino friend here is Cotton. We are relatively new to this community, having only arrived a few months ago, ourselves, but I've found everyone to be of a friendly sort, true moonshades, not a single whitehand among the group. If you mean to act in a less than shady manner, please leave now, or I'll have no choice but to end you, but if you intend to act the moonshade, I again say welcome. Unless my eyes are deceived, you have the look of an adventurer about you, is it your intention to join our pack?"

OOC... Welcome Jon, sorry for the strange lingo, Grindar was a character I originally played in the Sargrass Plains game, and I recently moved him to this game. While there, he picked up a bit of the native lingo and for role playing reasons, he kept it after moving games. Just so you know, even if your PC doesn't, (You can decide whether your PC understands the lingo or not) if something is shade or shady, it's something good, a moodshade is someone who is one of stand-up character, a whitehand is a good for nothing, and of course a pack is a team or party.

Oh...My name is Naithi (N-eye-thee), better known as Murder Muppet, a nickname I earned as a slave in the orc gladiator pits. You can probably tell by my appearance that I am one of the beastfolk. Specifically I am a Sloth-kin, which you would lump in with the Ursine or Bearfolk.

Nevertheless, Nightingale receives a warm welcome from Ash, Grindar, Lothlo, Beech, and Naithi. And all their animals.

Looking around, Nightingale can see that this "town" is presently not much more than a camp. Tents and cookfires are everywhere. There's a wooden building of some kind going up near the river, and signs that the land is being cleared for more buildings, but at the moment, Freedom's Landing isn't much of a town. The people seem nice, though.

OOC: Nightingale is tall and willowy. Her skin appears black but is actually dark blue. She keeps her white hair tied in a bun, except for one braid that she dies forest green, and generally has flowers mixed into. She wears smoky-glass goggles (Riddick-style) so that she can travel in the brightest of light and not be dazzled. She wears monkish outfits that have been embroidered with leaves and flowers. Her sandals are easy for her to kick-off, as she prefers to fight with her feet on the ground. Her monk tops are cropped so that her midriff shows. Running around her stomach and ribs are tattoos of trees and flowers – the ink is magical and the colors change randomly. The only weapons anyone can see are daggers strapped to her calves, at her hips, and at the small of her back. On a living vine necklace is her holy symbol of Queen Maab.
[Are there instructions somewhere on how to change my text format, like to italics or bold?]

IC: Having everyone greet her so nicely seems to catch her off guard. "I am Nightingale. I am not a member of the Thieve's Guild, but a Votary of Queen Maab. I was led here by a kaleidoscope of butterflies. I am happy to help however I can. I am skilled at healing, both magically, and not. I suppose anyone who doesn't respect nature wouldn't last long here. The Culverwood has a mind of it's own.

As for what led us here, we are mostly former slaves that over threw our slavers or the marginalized of that society that were treated only slightly better than slaves. I was personally kept as a gladiator in the slave pits...I know, I don't look the type.

I hope to grow strong enough to rebuild my tribe. I have reason to believe that I am now the last surviving member, or perhaps the first, depending on how you look at it.

Camalayas, Fizzgig and Cuddly Mule have been traveling with me since the beginning, and our bond to nature and each other goes deeper than you can imagine.

ooc: per the wikki
Most beastfolk acknowledge the role that evolutionist-oriented power of the Sargrass Plains played in the creation of the race. However, they worship a wide range of powers and gods, especially Mother Maab. Some of these have travelled too freely and deeply in the Valleys of Twilight and the Wold’s Cradle, and returned to the Wold many years before they left. These are responsible for the reports of Beastfolk predating recent events and even the birth of their race!

This is what happened to Naithi.

My goal is it educate those orc and half-orc parents, teaching them how showing love and support can have such an amazing effect on a child, which, while there is no guarantee the kid won't choose a dark bent, greatly increases the chances of the child growing to be an adult of good character."

As we talk I begin to feel strange. My hands begin to itch. I look down and see the god's paw glowing. The god's paw is one of my clans ancestral weapons, used to pass knowledge from one generation to the next and to help us grow by absorbing the qualities of our prey... but what was it I last last killed with it? I had intended to target something charismatic and perhaps taller...

(The god's paw is an RP item. When I level up I use it to help pick what feats/class/stats I pick for the next level. I may also use it to tweak my personality)

As I think about the last blood drawn with the weapon visions of Camalayas flash through my mind. Her life with me, the battles we fought together, all through her eyes. Then I see it. The last creature we killed together using the god's paw. The Oni Mask. A symbiote. A master and familiar bound together. That is what I, what we killed last.

As the realization comes to mind I can feel my teeth sharpen and my hands becoming even more claw like. They're retractable, feline and feminine... But I can already feel them stiffening my hands. Holding a blade in them will be problematic, and the teeth will not help my diplomatic efforts any. (Penalties gained to diplomacy and using weapons, among other things).

As I go through these changes I can literally feel Camalayas confusion and astonishment. Not metaphorically. I literally feel it. I can see that she is changing as well. She is growing stronger. I can see the intelligence is her eyes... And I swear she is mouthing the word How...

It remains an animal, but does not have the same limitations that other animals do.

I was guessing this had already been ruled on, but couldn't funny l find it.
