Kristoph introduces himself and Tae-Che who joins him in going to talk to the gangling man.
Gore'Thum and Teddy went back to the inn but finds all his new friends are gone, he sees them gathering around a strange looking man if he wishes to join.
Snark offers the old man some of his breakfast.
Einar and Isaac join the now crowd gathered around the old man's blanket.

Upon closer inspection the "gangling" man is a male human of indeterminate age. His clothes are dirty and ragged but serviceable and he sports a flat top hair cut with a braid reaching to his knees. His left eye is milky white and obviously blind.

As the party approaches he gathers his long legs underneath him to sit cross legged on his threadbare blanket. He holds a dusty pack clutched in his long fingers. He waves off the offer of food and speaks in a low rumble, "They call me Sloe. They ain't gonna find no fish like that. They can't look in muddy water, but my Ju-Ju eyeball can. He reaches up with one hand and pulls down on the skin underneath his milky eye as he surveys everyone in the group with his good eye closed, seeming to look into each of you with his blind eye, "If there is a hero to find it!"

Einar doesn't quite know what to think of this fellow. Clutching a deck of cards like that and his 'Ju-Ju eyeball is just ideal for scaring children... his father taught Einar how to work steel to make swords. He also learned to handle the swords he made... but no one ever explained the delicate art of words to Einar.
So he just observes and assumes some of these other folk will talk.

(Perception:28) Kristoph spots the cards but says nothing. When the "gangling" man pulls down the skin underneath his milky eye and surveys him, he lifts his own eye patch and returns the gesture. (Kristoph isn't actually blind, just partially).
"Well I'm no hero Sloe, but if it stops the town going into meltdown I'll help" he says letting his eye-patch fall back into place. "What's the story with the pond?" He continues studying the man (sense motive 10).

Snark continues to stand while the others sit. It makes him not feel so short around all these tall folks. He probably wouldn't have been able to see the cards in the man's pack if he weren't sitting down.

He continues munching on his breakfast as he says to the gangling man "You don't seem that slow to me. So, why is that fish important an where can we find one? Hey - cards! Do you play cards?"

Done with his own food, and seeing Teddy absorbed in his, Gore'Thum goes outside to see what everyone else is doing. He eyes the man skeptically.

Kristoph The man seems honest if a little eccentric.

Sloe responds with a deep harrumph, “Play cards, bah. I read the cards. Yah, the Fish gone is bad ju-ju for the town. Strange things can happen, but ol’ Sloe can find out.”, He pulls a set of tarot cards from his pack and begins shuffling them back and forth in the air, while sitting cross-legged on his tattered blanket. ”But I’m too old to do the finding myself. But you want to be the heroes?”

Not waiting for an answer he flips the cards one last time and starts laying them out.

Perception DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {Sloe is a masterful card dealer but he is manipulating the cards}

First card – 7 of Hearts. “This was no kids prank. A team of people took the fish.”
2nd Card – Knave of Waters Reversed. “Rules breaker but good hearted. He knows…”
3rd Card – 10 of Waters. “The fish is in mysterious water, many waters. The fourth card will tell…”
4th Card - Joker reversed. “That doesn’t make sense! A hidden mastermind? But where…”

Sloe pauses for a dramatic moment as he reaches for the 5th and final card. Suddenly everyone hears a whistling noise and a THUNK and Sloe collapses forward with a grunt, a dagger protruding from his back!!
The source of the dagger is quickly identified as a gnome and two humans emerge from an alley between two nearby houses. All of them have swords drawn and have the look of men used to violence. The gnome says in a matter of fact voice, "They know too much, kill em boys."

Tae Che was entranced when the cards were revealed. Her eyes go wide when the old man slumps forward showing the dagger in his back. She looks to see the gnome and two humans as the gnome says to kill them. She quickly stands and casts her Mage Armor spell on herself.

Gore'Thum is only mildly interested in the fortune telling. Then the guy gets murdered. The frog gives a great croak of alarm, alerting Teddy who rushes to see what's going on. Teddy tries to quickly dismount his chair but faceplants and is delayed (1 of two rounds to get out the door and to the fight. I thought we were just outside the bar?)

After the initial statement and a full realization of what just happened Gore'Thum can't help but facepalm. Murdering people in broad daylight over a goldfish? Noise is their friend here, once a big crowd shows up these murderers will have to flee, or kill everyone in town for 'knowing to much', so the frog shouts "Murderers!" at the top of his formidable lungs as he leaps forwards to S7 and fails to snag T1 with his tongue (5 to hit)

Snark sees the murderous thugs. And one is a gnome! This cannot stand.

"You attacked an unarmed man! And you, a gnome! You at least should know better."

Snark moves up to to square V7 and casts Color Spray , which should catch all three. (DC 14 Will Save or be blinded, stunned, etc. depending on their level.)

It's about this time that Snark realizes the potential folly of his ways. He gulps.

Color Spray -
A vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from your hand, causing creatures to become stunned, perhaps also blinded, and possibly knocking them unconscious. Each creature within the cone is affected according to its HD.

2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)

3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.

5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.

Sightless creatures are not affected by color spray.

Watching the "gangling" man deal cards (perception:17) Kristoph is surprised when he slumps forward with a dagger in his back! According to the map Kristoph was in front so he catches him and steps around, putting himself between the fortune-teller and the thugs (T8) and provides 1st aid (Healing:20).

Einar gets up from the blanket and draws his Falchion holding it with both hands and raising the blade up with the shoulders (Vom Tag position). Rushing into them makes no sense so he calmly strafes right into position (ending up at Z7). The weapon stance is really not a defensive one... its sole purpose is to launch powerful strikes towards the opponent and to be threatening.

"Lay down your weapons..." he tells the Gnome hoping to demoralize him (Intimidate 18)

Isaac keeps quite as the man does his card reading. He's surprised how much information he comes up using only the cards.

However on the final card the fortune teller goes limp. With the sudden death in front of him his guard training takes over he pulls out his sword and moves over toward Snark standing beside him. Without his armor on he feels exposed but grips his blade with resolve.
(Isaac is currently not wearing his armor or shield he only has touch 12 AC)

Tae-Che protects herself with Mage Armor
Teddy come dashing towards commotion (hm, reading back through it does look like everyone thought the bar was closer, Teddy will start this round just down the path.)
Gore'Thum tries to lick a thug but the smell throw him off
Snark puts on his brave pants to casts Color Spray, or were those the foolish pants?
Kristoph tries to aid Sloe, but quickly realizes the poor fortune teller is beyond saving
Einar Demands the murderer to surrender and looks pretty scary doing it
Isaac joins Snark in threatening the thugs

The three thugs blink and shake their heads at the swirl of pretty colors but otherwise seem unaffected. (Will 14, 14, 14 yes the die roller did that to you)

The gnome is visibly shaken by Einar's challenge and pushes one of the thugs between himself and the large man.

The yelling seems to be attracting attention in town but unfortunately the sheriff dispersed the crowd. The two deputies by the pond are the closest and they are slow to react but appear to be heading over.

Seeing Sloe is dead Kristoph grits his teeth "Oh you're gonna regret that!". He moves (5ft from T8 to T7). The flat of his palm shoots out in a blur - twice. Aiming for the thugs solar-plexus he intends taking him alive.
(flurry of blows: attacks:21 for 7 damage and 15 for 9 damage / chossing to make the blows non-lethal).

Snark takes a 5' step back and lets fly an Acid Dart at the attacking gnome. It only hits Touch AC 9, but it would do 4 points of acid damage if it somehow hit.

Kristoph relaxes slightly as he notes Thug1 staggering, then lands a quick, gentle kick to his stomach (attack:22 for 7 damage / still opting for non-lethal). Trusting that's enough he turns and another kick flies over the gnome's head, then he emits something between a laugh and a grunt when he realizes not everyone is his height.

(Flurry of blows, second attack misses, please ignore the d4 it was an accident).

Teddy sees the scene and goes pale under his fur. He waves wildly at the deputies and points wildly indicating where things are going down before moving 30 feet around.

Gore'Thum gives up on the tongue grapple and moves around to flank T1 (he should have enough movement to go around and not provoke AoO, ) He bites down on his unfortunate opponent (25 to hit with flanking, 5 damage)

Twice now this tug dares to wield his blade at Einar... unsuccessful perhaps but still enough to anger Einar. His temper bubbles up into a rage and he slams his Falchion down with brute force...

Hits AC15 - Damage 16HP

Assuming that's sufficient for the bandit to go down Einar turns to face the Gnome and his companion and moves to X5... If ever the Gnome wants to make a run for it he'll either run into Gore'Thum, Snark or Einar... never having fought together before Einar feels they are none the less working as a team. That's a promising though if ever they are going to go adventuring together.

Snark shouts out to the thugs.

"Hey fellas, this Gnome is paying you guys, but the guy you killed was pretty popular here. I think the bigger question is, how will you spend his money if you're dead? You might want to give up now. The whole town is about to descend on you, and I'm not sure anyone can protect you from an angry mob if you keep fighting."

Snark will take a step back and throws another blob of acid at the gnome. Again, it goes wide (hits touch AC 6.) None of his spells seem to be effective today. He frowns as he looks at his hands, wondering if he's doing something wrong.

I think that when the bad gnome moved, it also provoked an AOO from Snark before he backed up 5'. He'll take a swing.

"Take him alive so the guards can interrogate them." Gore'Thum says to the group. Teddy! Cast something!" He adds to his witch companion. Teddy nods jerkily and fumbles in his pockets for a few moments before extracting a small needle from some sort of stinging insect (only after poking himself with it twice). He waves it around and says a few words and suddenly a swarm of hornets comes out of nowhere to sting and attack the gnome (2 non-lethal damage unless the gnome has DR or 3+ natural armor). He seems momentarily pleased at his success, though still generally wide eyed and frightened at the fact people are murdering each other.

Gore'Thum tries to smack the small target and knock him out (11 to hit for non-lethal damage, probably a miss but if not 7 non-lethal.

The gnome, stung by insects, shakes off the daze and assesses his options. With the deputie finally approaching he gets a cornered animal look and lashes out at his nearest target.

Two Deputies are running from the south, their yells of "STOP!" strained by lack of breath.

The gnome was more slippery than a waxed wooden floor it seems as he dodges another of Kristoph's half-hearted grabs. Stepping back the monk bats a bug away (briefly wondering where they all came from). For all intensive purposes he looks like he's stopped fighting, adopting an easy, relaxed stance, arms folded, his voice stern.
"I'd wager that wide-eyed look says you know your options are running out, time for you to decide how this ends for you. Right now you still have a choice. Reckon you'll kill us all before the sheriff's men arrive? Or is your heart so full of hatred you'll die to make your point? Gesturing towards Einar he continues, "See the big guy gripping a sword the same size as you? He's already chopped your lackey in half and he's clearly fighting an urge to split you like a log, personally I don't reckon he's got much self-control left and he's certainly no fan of yours!"
Gently brushing a bug from his arm he continues "I'm not usually one to give advice, but if you wanna live past the next few moments I'd drop your weapons, before all those magic warning shots whizzing past your head start getting personal." Without taking his eyes from the gnome he nods his head slightly again towards Einar. "Or worse!"

Gore'Thum tries to look spooky to help Kristophs attempt to get him to surrender but manages to just look goofy instead (1 to intimidate). It's hard to make humanoid expressions look right on a non-humanoid face ok?!

Teddy just sort of hovers at the back looking all worried and scared at the murder going on right now. He keeps looking about nervously for the deputies.

Einar smiles as Kristoph advises the Gnome to surrender. We waits just a second for the Gnome to comply... if he doesn’t Einar attacks...

Isaac more than a little beat up decides to assist Einar making it harder for the gnome to dodge any potential attack from Einar.

Snark says to the Gnome, "You best stay where ya are, ya little weasel. In fact, mebbe you outta have a seat."

Snark will cast Grease (DC 14 Reflex save) as outlined on the map.

He also takes a look at the deputies running up to make sure they are deputies and not more accomplices of this Gnome.

Grease - A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can’t move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

Kristoph attempt to talk down the gnome
Isaac tries to distract the gnome but just bleeds everywhere
Teddy and Gore’Thum attempt to frighten the gnome
Tae-Che creates an illusion
Snark greases the ground
Einar readies for if the gnome continues to resist

The gnome recognizes there's a lot of magic being thrown around and doesn't get too spooked by it nor does he lose his footing.

The gnome seems to finally recognize the gig is up and drops his swords. "Alright, uncle, I give."

The two deputies arrive on the scene. Seeing multiple bodies on the ground and a whole lot of drawn weapons they look pretty upset, "Everybody drop your weapons, NOW!", one of them yells at all of you.

Einar immediately responds to the deputies demands... he drops his Falchion and puts both his hands on the back of his head... coming down from his rage Einar is now fatigued (6rounds)

The way Einar acts at the sight of the deputies somehow looks quite familiar to the Barbarian... as if he's used to it...
At that moment Selene enters the town square and notices Einar's pose... his weapon bloodied and down on the ground... hands on his head...
"... dear Mother not again... " she whispers.

Neither Gore'Thum nor Teddy has a weapon to drop, but Teddy squeaks and sticks his hands in the air. "I just got here, it wasn't me!" Gore'Thum looks exasperated as he hops over to the deputies, leaving the prisoner to be handled by the rest. "Greetings officers. We were consulting the fortune teller over there when those three killed him with a thrown dagger. They attempted to kill the rest of us, seemingly not realizing our group was well armed. It ended badly for them. One of them needs medical attention, the other should be taken into custody." He indicates with his front leg the people in question.

Isaac takes a step back from the gnome and drops his sword. He keeps his eyes on the gnome ready to move away if he draws a weapon or attacks him. He was pretty hurt and needed to get some healing.

Having been a member of the Plateau city constabulary for a couple of years Kristoph knew the drill, remaining relaxed he holds his hands out (showing he's weaponless) and takes a small step back to give the deputies room. He watches and waits to see how they react and keeps an eye out for any other shifty individuals lurking in the background (perception:12).

Tae Che relaxes when the deputies arrive and shows her hands to them. No weapons here, sirs. She says to herself.

Snark sees the deputies show up. He idlly gestures toward the other gnome with his staff as he speaks.

"Oooh, glad you guys are here. Yeah, that frog - he has the right of it.

"We Come Together here, and here come ol' flat top, he come grooving up, Sloe-ly. He got ju-ju eyeball, he got hair down to his knee. We're talkin' to him and then these jerks show up an' throw a knife inta Sloe's back.

"Now be careful there. I put some grease on the ground by that gnome, and I don't want you fellas to fall an get hurt tying that guy up."


Snark figures the small staff he holds poses no threat to these guards and doesn't think they'd consider it a weapon, but if they tell him again to drop it he won't hesitate to throw it on the ground.

Kristoph, Tae-Che, Einar, and Isaac comply with the request.
Teddy and Gore’Thum and Snark comply and try to explain the situation.

The gnome, his weapons already dropped, puts his hands up and exclaims in a cheery voice, "Thank goodness you're here. Me and my boys tried to stop em from killing old Sloe but they just killed poor Billy. They were about to do me in too."

The two deputies give everyone the wary eye and start looking at each other. "I think you're all going to need to come with us to the sheriff."

Sense motive DC 12 Highlight to display spoiler: {They don't appear to be buying the gnome's story, but seem very uncertain, especially about the prospect of trying to take 9 people into custody.}

About this time other people are finally starting to gather, pointing and staring at the bodies and blood.

Einar doesn't say a word. He senses the deputies are very uncertain (sense motive 14) so in order not to provoke them he just stares at Selene thinking it didn't take him long to get into trouble again.
He will follow the group to the sheriff wondering if he ought to pick up his sword and bring it or not... perhaps they will see this as a provocation for more trouble?! But most likely the blade is evidence now...

If non of the deputies pick it up, Selene will safeguard Einar's blade.

Gore'Thum eyes the Gnome before grunting. "Very well. I'm sure we'll be able to clear this up." Teddy looks a little unsure as to what is even going on but follow's Gore'Thums lead. Gore'Thum will keep a close eye on the two attackers, ready to lick-grapple them if they made any sudden attempts at fleeing.

Snark makes a mental note that he never wants to be lick-grappled. It might be a good idea to be nice to that frog.

He rolls his eyes a bit as the bad gnome protests his innocence. He looks up at the deputies. "Hey, sorry we left you fellas with a dead body to deal with. We're new here and we didn't expect to be attacked. Is this common here in Herenmar?

"As for their innocence, if you boys want a fun story, keep that unconscious brute there separated from his gnomish ringleader. If you interview them both separately, it might be amusing to see how different their stories are."


Snark will go with the deputies as asked, walking with his little staff.

Kristoph shakes his head and shrugs "No one blames you for trying to lie your way out, but do you really think anyone's gonna believe eight people, from two different continents, just arrived and over a hot stew decided to form a cabal to murder a half-blind, unarmed homeless man they never knew?".
When Snark shares his thoughts Kristoph shrugs as if to say 'what more needs to be said'?

When he catches dodgy-gnome looking at him Kristoph points a finger at his own good eye and then at murderous-gnome, the universal 'got my eye on you' look, it doesn't phase him that he only has one eye, he lets others worry about such semantics.
