The Bridge Portal

DM(James M) - Map - A Bridged  d10=1 d6=1 d4+2=6 d6=6
Thursday July 29th, 2021 8:35:57 AM

As each of the Warden's passed through the portal they came through and saw that they stood in another pocket dimension, amazed at sights that would be impossible in the Wold. Before you stretched a long stone bridge sixty feet wide with pylons every 30’ holding it up over a vast muddy swamp. The bridge was straight and went for as far as you could see -- miles and miles, surely -- before vanishing in the distant mist and fog that permeated the place. Rising above the mist in the distance you can see a large stone stronghold or citadel.

Perception DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { The stone bridge with no railings. Below the bridge is bubbling mud.}

Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear a clicking noise coming from the mist above. Peering upwards you detect the faint glint of steel from the muted light source that permeates this realm.}

"I'm guessing falling into the bubbling mud below would be sunbaked," Trellus opines.

With his Air Walk spell still in effect, he decides to use it as long as he can, remaining about 10' above the bridge.
"We head toward the castle?" he asks.

Moridark looks over the expanse in front of him but doesn't notice anything beyond the bridge and the castle in the distance. Moridark rubs his forehead as as he ponders where they might be, "It appears we have passed from one portion of the pocket realm to another. This part seems to have elements of Earth, water, and Air associated with it. If I am correct any spells with those elemental domains will be more powerful."

Moridark checks on Kradirom as he ascends on his steed to about 30 feet above the bridge.

He slides off one side of the bridge to investigate the bubbling mud (gas?, heat?, gap between the bubbling mud and the bridge?, signs of life?). If there is room, he transits from this side to that side under the bridge and rejoins the party - otherwise he returns on the same side.

Elyngael held up a hand to test the movement of the air. There was none as the mist hung in the unmoving dank humid air as the smell of rotting vegetation wafted up to those on the bridge. Armand cast Divine Presence as the angels appeared, took a step away from the one attacking him and then cast Bless.

Elyngael brought up her weapon defensively and tried to identify the creatures.

Neshi cast chain lightning.

Moridark flew closer to the bridge and studied the creatures.

Trellis cast Shield of Faith and Protection from Energy

Neshi's chain lightning lashed out at the second Angel catching it unaware and full in the chest. It seemed as if these creatures were especially susceptible to electrical damage. The lightning arced to the next Angel and then sliced through the remaining ones. The attack was a success, but it broke Armands Divine Presence effect on Neshi.

The Angels were undaunted by the massive electrical attack as they stepped toward those that had withdrawn and with their greatswords swiped furiously at the Warden's. Blade and fire slashed around cutting and burning each of the wardens.

Neshi cast chain lightning twice more.

Armand channeled healing energy to his friends.

Osul came from under the bridge and lit up with electricity.

Trellis full attacked one of the Angels and hit it once with his sword.

Moridark started to cast a spell after he moved a way off.

Elyngael healed her wounds and started to run in the hope that she could draw them away.

Owen cast chain lightning as well.

Neshi's chain lightning lashed out once more...then again as those attacks dropped four of the angels in the process. Some hit the flagstones of the bridge, others fell into the mud below. After the smoke cleared only two remained.

Osul lit up the bridge with crackling electricity and damaged the two remaining angels even as Trellus took a five foot step and attacked the third angel in the group hitting it once but his blade was turned away by the steel like skin of the creature.

Elyngael moved off a distance, but none followed her as she'd hoped while Owen called forth his own chain lightning spell that finished off the last two angels. It was all over in 12 seconds and the Warden's had barely broken out into a sweat.

DM: Not really sure what exactly Osul is doing, but the electrical damage was effective.

Osul Did a visual search of the fallen constructs.

Armand suggested a marching order so as to keep a look out while they traveled along the bridge.

Moridark finished his summoning and agreed they should press on. He took a position over the mud on the left side of the bridge.

Trellus was impressed with the Wardens and agreed to move forward as well.

Elyngael kept a sharp look out and moved along ready to fight.

Gears, sprockets, and springs littered the bridge as they rolled around on the flagstones and settled into the mortared joints in the blocks. Odd clicking noises continued as random bits of angel jumped about around them. Other than the noises from the destroyed constructs all was silent other than the occasional popping of a muddy bubble beneath the bridge.

Otherwise the cloying mist obscured their vision beyond a few hundred feet as the bridge stretched out into the distance. Behind them the portal had faded as if it needed to recharge before allowing anyone to pass through it once more.

Osul or Perception DC 20 (you can use your previous roll) Highlight to display spoiler: {The angels gears are exposed and in some instances still clicking as they spin down from their wound positions, but with no connections to the inner workings of them the movement is useless. Each angel has a greatsword in it's hand or nearby, but these look rusted and pitted from exposure to the elements. Interestingly they looked like the finest weapons available when the angels were using them in the battle. It's possible the magic that powers these creatures also enhanced their weapons. The sword hilts have some precious metals and small gems that would sell for a few hundred gold each, you guess.}

The bridge was level and flat which made travel along it easy enough, but the scenery never changed. Bridge, post, mist, bridge, post, mist over and over again. It was about midday when Elyngael noticed something glinting in the mud on her side of the bridge.

Perception DC 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {Floating atop the mud with a dismembered skeletal hand gripped around it is a staff. One of the fingers has a plain silver ring on it that caught the light. Otherwise based on the staffs position in the mud it's quite buoyant.}

Osul kept watch and decided the mist was obscuring his vision, so he cast control weather.

Armand asked about some way to remotely fetch an object.

Moridark sent his archons to collect the staff and ring.

Trellus now walking, commented that he had no useful spells to aid in retrieving the staff.

Elyngael was certain it was a trap and said so while she kept an eye on the surrounding misty area.

Neshi agreed that he thought it was a trap, but admitted that the staff and ring might have value.

Owen watched the staff as the archons brought the items back.

As soon as the control weather spell was cast a 3 mile bubble of clear sky formed around the wardens. They could see the bridge continued on for as far as they could see, unchanging in it's appearance.

The archons swept down out of the sky and between the three of them collected the staff and hand so as to bring it back to Moridark. Meanwhile the mud continued it's bubbling as the noxious fumes from the marsh forced their way to the surface.

Owen was watching with his true vision and spotted nothing unusual.

DM: Moving things along unless you'd like to stop and talk a bit....

The rest of the day was mostly uneventful, the sky was clear (out to 3 miles) and nothing bothered them other than the smell of the swamp below them. Late afternoon when they stopped a moment to hydrate and take in their surroundings one of their number noticed a frog like creature a couple of miles distant. That it was visible from where they stood was a testament to it's size. It was easily the size of a dragon as it languished in the muddy swamp. You could faintly hear it croaking in the distance as well, but it made no move towards you. You suspected it didn't even see you moving along the bridge.

Another curiosity was that you encountered some wraith like beings that resembled people moving the opposite direction along the bridge. You could stand in front of them and they'd stop, but unless impeded in such a way they said or did nothing that would alarm the wardens. They were harmless. As evening approached you started to encounter them more frequently and quite possibly another reason the large frog beast wasn't alarmed by your presence on the bridge. It simply couldn't tell you apart from the ghosts.

Unless there is something specific you'd like to do you can set up camp and watches for the night.

Only those you designate may enter the mansion, and the portal is shut and made invisible behind you when you enter. You may open it again from your own side at will. Once observers have passed beyond the entrance, they are in a magnificent foyer with numerous chambers beyond. The atmosphere is clean, fresh, and warm.

You can create any floor plan you desire to the limit of the spell's effect. The place is furnished and contains sufficient foodstuffs to serve a nine-course banquet to a dozen people per caster level. A staff of near-transparent servants (as many as two per caster level), liveried and obedient, wait upon all who enter. The servants function as unseen servant spells except that they are visible and can go anywhere in the mansion.

Since the place can be entered only through its special portal, outside conditions do not affect the mansion, nor do conditions inside it pass to the plane beyond.

Owen looked around the exterior of the citadel.

Neshi cast a couple of spells and looked around the citadel as well and examined one of the portals.

Artmand asked Owen about pocket dimensions and then examined the construction of the place.

Osul mentioned that he saw a signpost in one of the portals.

Elyngael found tracks and said as much to the others.

Moridark examined the portals.

Trellus suggested they close the portal from the other side.

Flying around the citadel it becomes immediately clear that whomever created this pocket realm never intended for anyone to circle the castle. As soon as any of the flying wardens get far enough away from the bridge the castle just ends. Stones vanish and there is no back. In fact looking from the back side of the castle they see nothing at all, not even the bridge and the free windows on the side of the structure they can see show a room with 7 portals and people that look identical to those in the courtyard.

The people on the ground find that a close examination of the structure shows that as the blocks and structural supports get farther from the portals they flatten out as if painted upon a canvas. The texture and joints in the mortar are simply optical illusions created by masterful strokes of a brush. Unlike a canvas however the walls are impenetrable. This place is barely hanging on to it's reality and no telling what it will do to its inhabitants should it collapse upon its own magical weight.

As for the portals, each was suspended by magic inches from the ground with no frame around it. No rotating steel structure, rock circle, or anything that might be able to be knocked down or broken. Just a simple glowing puddle of water on its side.

So we gather up and then take the plunge together." He walks further into the room. "I still think that simply closing those doors may somehow effect this whole place and send it back from where it came. But in any case that may be a chore for someone else."

Neshi looked around and then cast detect magic.

Armand also wasn't alarmed or shaken by the aura and asked about the "Wood". He also cast Detect Magic and looked the device over.

Moridark was also unaffected by the evil aura.

Owen helped Moridark examine the stone.

Trellus asked about the golems.

Neshi - Highlight to display spoiler: {The device on the pedestal is definitely what is holding the portal open. It seemed to also be recharging. You estimate it'll take 5 to 6 days to fully recharge. Touching it might not be a good idea.}

Armand and Moridark - Highlight to display spoiler: {The device on the pedestal is definitely what is holding the portal open. It seemed to also be recharging. You estimate it'll take 5 to 6 days to fully recharge. You suspect that the entire pocket dimension is being fueled by this device, Maybe not the nexus of portals, but certainly the bridge with the trapped souls. It was also looking like the order of the portals on the bridge were randomized, but this place is certainly the source of the magic holding the pocket realms together.}

Elyngael - Highlight to display spoiler: {The ruins mirrored the citadel on the bridge very closely however none of the walls were higher than twenty feet and some were crumbling in places. The inside of the place would be easily accessed. As she ranged out towards the south she saw that there was indeed a road of sorts with tracks showing recent activity. None of those tracks headed north toward the ruins however. In fact the only tracks she could find in that area between the road and the ruins were of small game. She could see further down the road that there was a signpost.}

Owen - Highlight to display spoiler: {He looked at the stone closely and spotted a hairline fracture running through the key gem in the construction. The device would shatter easily if thrown to the ground and effectively destroy it. He suspected that the aura he and the others felt is what had prevented anyone from coming near to interfere with it. He also saw a single foot print next to the objects location. }

Elyngael, Perception DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {From down the road you can make out the words written on the signpost and the direction the arrows point. Bywater Bay - 10 Miles - North, EvenOak - 5 Miles - East, Tharn - 140 Miles - South, Effacia - 70 Miles - West, Troll. }

The wood seems quiet and undisturbed here near the ruins and the evil object. No tracks or evidence of anything can been seen in the area.

The pedestal itself sat in an enclosed and crumbling area with what appeared to be the only part of the structure with a roof. Inside the darkened area where the pedestal sat was choked with cobwebs. Small, normal spiders lay starving in their webs as they looked for insects that would never appear and wander into their traps. The walls to either side of the pedestal looked unstable and the iron bound wooden door at the back was half blocked with rocky debris from what looked like part of the ceiling near it. The area beyond the door was hidden from above by weeds and underbrush, no telling what evil lurked within that dusty edifice.

In my opinion the entire pocket dimension is being fueled by this device, Maybe not the nexus of portals, but certainly the bridge with the trapped souls. It was also looking like the order of the portals on the bridge were randomized, but this place is certainly the source of the magic holding the pocket realms together. I'd like to destroy it somehow while it's in recharge mode. Anyone have any ideas?"

Armand pauses briefly. "I do have a shatter spell I can try on it. Then there's my adamantine hammer, or if we want to stay further back I'm sure Elyngael would be willing to shoot it with an adamantine arrow. I sort of doubt a dispel magic is going to work on it, maybe a greater dispel magic? Also I have Stone Shape, maybe we can seal it up. Those are just my thoughts."

--- HUNTING ---

Elyngael - Highlight to display spoiler: { Elyngeal traveled into the woods a small distance as she hunted. She was finding it exceptionally difficult and though she was successful in bagging a few birds it shouldn't be this hard. It shouldn't have happened and she could only assume that it did because she was moving and they weren't but she suddenly found herself surrounded by men with arrows pointed at her head.
"Here now missy. Just put the birds down an' yer weapons and we'll talk this through nice an' easy." said one that looked like the leader.

A second one piped up. "Yeah, and drop yer belt pouch too and whatever else yer got money in."

Elyngeal was out of earshot of the others and about a mile out from the ruins. Brawn was at the moment doing the flushing for her so he was hidden in the forest and just out of sight. She suspected these men hadn't seen him.

She can try to yell for help. Make a Con Check.

WELL it was not my intention to get that far from the group. AS I said I was only going to gather berries and such. If it was that far away you should have not gone. Lastly, I would think that since you had her in full hunting mode, then she would have been aware of her surroundings. As for yelling for help, make a CON check, WHAT'S THE TARGET NUMBER?
Con Check, 3.
Elyngael yells, "KILL THEM ALL BRAWN!"

She unloads into the bandits. Targeting the nearest and working outward if they die. Don't appear to be on the map anywhere.

Armand did not set up the Tree near the portal Armand chooses a place a ways off from the artifact, preferable where's there's already some trees.so I'm not sure where he would be on the map.

Armand replies to Moridark. "Basically I can do this whenever. It only takes 10 minutes for the tree to grow and 10 minutes for it to shrink back down. Your mansion thing might be a bit more secure though." Then he see's the cloud suddenly spurt up. "Oh my." Then he hears Brawn roar "That's Brawn's angry roar." He will click his heels activating his boots of speed and head toward brawn's location at full run.
