Last one standing

DM JamesM: Last one standing? Round 1  3d6=14 ; 3d6=9 ; 3d6=4 ; 3d6=16 ; d20+1=15 ; d20-2=15 ; d20+4=20 ;
Monday October 4th, 2021 10:01:51 AM

"Who's that?"
"Said he was El Piss."
"Did not, said he was elf piss."
"That's not a very good name."
"You guys are rude, he said Simo."
"Wait, there it is. Call him Benni."

"BENNNI!" the crowd cheered as he offered to buy the heroes a round.

DM James: Don't forget to add a Hero Point for leveling. Also add one for completing the adventure. Keep in mind maximums, if you are at max and these put you over, you have 1 week of real time to use those so they aren't lost.

A couple of tables are dragged from the center of the room and placed end to end. A three locals line up at the table and three pints of ale are placed in front of them. Jonsey, Big John, Trag, and Rio.

Jonsey was a thin older man that looked like he was all sinew and bone. He smelled of fish and his hands were gnarled and deformed from years of fishing and mending nets. He glanced uncertainly at the back of the room and smiled. You could see a younger woman with long brown hair standing there with her arms crossed with a judging expression on her face. You surmise that is his daughter.

Big John, as his name implied was a really big man topping seven feet tall and weighing in at close to three hundred pounds. He was wearing a simple tunic and leggings and looked like he had been at the forge all day. There was a heavy hammer hanging from a loop in his belt.

KS: Local DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Big John keeps the fire going at the forge. He'd never be trusted to actually make anything. That didn't keep him from swinging a hammer though.}

Trag appeared to be another fisherman. He had a scar on his face and one eye seemed to look off to the right all the time. He was dressed well and appeared to be rather successful.

KS: Local DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Trag owns his own fishing boat. The scar comes from a wound when he was young. A fishing hook was caught in his face and messed him up pretty badly. He doesn't do much fishing himself any more, but he makes a tidy profit from the proceeds of the boat.}

Rio, was a raven haired buxom woman in full bloom and though she was in her thirties looked formidable as an opponent. She had custom leather armor and corset over a peasant blouse and black leggings. She carried a longsword, rapier, and a number of daggers.

KS: Local DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Rio was the captain of the Sea Witch. It was said she herself was a witch as well and had a fair amount of control over the weather. Her ship was sleek and fast; some said it was the fastest around and with her control of the winds she could make 12 knots up wind while her pursuer had to tack. A couple barbarians ambushed her down at the docks a while back and she killed them both. No one really knew what her business was, but everyone knew she didn't fish.}

"Before we git started. Any o' you heroes in?" Ralphus asked. "You drink the three back to back, and then another every fifteen minutes. You puke or pass out you lose. Last one standing wins and the losers buy his all week."

DM James: Round One: You can drink 1 per 6 points of CON without making a save. Afterwards you have to make a Fort Check DC15 with each one. You get a circumstance bonus of +1 for every 100 pounds you character weighs. The DC increases by 1 for each drink beyond the first save. If you fail the save you get a +2 morale bonus on physical stats for 1d4 hours. Your fort saves are now at -2. The temp bonus to Con does not apply to Fort saves. (Any drinks you had previously In Character don't count, we'll assume you didn't start until the contest.)

Jonsey pounded the first two easily. His third one went down fairly easily as well and he seemed in control as he slyly looked over at Trag. Big John pounded all three and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand like it was nothing. Trag braced himself and drank them down. He was a little slower than the first two but he looked well. Rio was easily the smallest of the four, but she tackled the three with gusto and like John wiped her mouth with the back of her hand as she stared down the big man.

All eyes turned to the heroes that decided to participate.

DM James: The winner will have a +4 circumstance bonus to Diplomacy while in Heranmar or until someone beats them at a drinking contest. If you don't compete, you'll lose one bonus point each week.

Edit:
Kristoph Highlight to display spoiler: {Everyone is listening. There's a crowd around the heroes sucking up every bit of information they can get from the newcomers and saviors of the lucky fish.}

Faeloi could be seen talking to Rio moments after the woman's go at the drinks. A short while later she told the heroes she had booked passage home and that Captain Rio would be taking her a short ways to another port on her journey home.

DM James: Erin is leaving the game. Here's to hoping she returns some day.

"Sounds good..." Einar says as he sits down to fight. Not that he's a big fan of drinking contests, but he thinks it might be good to integrate well into the community. He just hopes he won't make a fool of himself nor does he want to get into a rage for a game like this either.

The first two go down quickly. The third one goes down... as Einar slams the empty pitcher on the table he has a broad smile on his face. (Fort save 9 - fail - char sheet updated to lvl 2 and with these temp boni integrated)

Isaac decides that he might as well give it a try not much for him to lose. He downs the first two with little trouble but the third might give him trouble. That proves to be true as he sets down the drink half full and backs off no sense puking his guts out in addition to losing. Seems luck was not on his side.

A lifted eye, a raised mug is all Onesimos responds to the speculation or roar of the crowd. He nods at Einar’s comment, but instead points to the woven High Woldian glyph of Flower. ”I find this is much more valuable and useful than cold steel. So useful, I would ask to join you Luck Makers in your quests.”

The brown haired elf doesn’t move to join the drinking contest.

Ooc: we will be here if you have time to play with us, Erin. Safe travels!

Tae Che politely refused to join in on the drinking contest, knowing full well her chances were slim and none to win. She raises her glass to Faeloi in camaraderie when informed of her leaving. "We'd be happy to have you join us, Benni." She watches as several members start the contest with the locals.

The little gnome knows better to than to get in a drinking contest with folks twice his size.

Snark blanches at Kristoph's harrowing tale and gains a new respect for the man.

In response to Benni's request to join our little group, he says, "I'd love to have you join us and I'd love an introduction to the WLA. Now you say yer a cleric an all, but can you prove it by healing my friends here?"

Kristoph joins the drinking game and the first two drinks go down smoothly, having worked up a thirst he hardly notices the third (Fort:22). Halfway through his confession he realizes one or two - oh heck - EVERYONE is listening, but bolstered by liquid courage he continues on.

When Faeloi announces her departure he wishes the ranger a safe journey - you really got to know people in a fight, Despite her unfortunate aroma of dead fish he gave her a brotherly hug. He would miss the half elf.

With a 15 minute pause between drinks Kristoph heads off to his room to freshen up quickly.

===== 'Kristoph's Journal: (Day:3 - Heranmar)' =====
A strange thing happened today. As I was practicing a kata in my room, suddenly my hand burst into flame and when I frantically shook it the fire flew across the room and exploded against the door. I eyeballed the burn mark for a while, testament that it wasn't my imagination at least.

After centering myself I started the form again and paying attention was able to note the energy as it built. This time I managed to avoid hurling fire across the room, however I was unable to hold into it and eventually it dripped onto the floor. Grabbing a pitcher I threw some water at it, but I swear - the flames dodged it?! Grabbing a blanket I tried to bat the remaining fire out, but it sprung aside. After a few more leaps and bounds the fire turned blue, forming into the shape of a cat. It ducked, dodged and vaulted from table to chair to bed, seemingly enjoying itself and taunting me. I managed to stamp out a couple more fires but soon lost my patience and hollered at the blue flames. My words sounded strange and I hardly recognized my own voice, still the fire froze in place. So, I could speak to it and it understood, not only that but it seemed to obey me? I have no idea what language I spoke or how I came to know it, but I quickly established using it makes the fire behave!

Although I feel no spells I do feel some kind of an ability to channel healing too! Have I become some sort of priest? I didn't sign up to this...

Needless to say, it took me a while to relax and take it all in. I managed a prayer of thanks to Vé-Eldfjöll. The fire in the mountains that (from the moment I set my own face on fire) had called me and to seek meaning was another of the reasons for coming South. Now here, I am able to feel a presence. Is there something after all in all this higher-power-belief? Can I actually buy into this? Or did I already do so many years ago?

==========

Five minutes later 'Flamesworn' Kristoph comes down from his room accompanied by a small cat made of blue fire?! He tells it sternly in Ignan Highlight to display spoiler: {"BEHAVE and sit by my feet, make sure you don't burn anything"!} at which point it gives him a 'spoil-sport' look and flops down.

He tells Ralphus (the inn-keeper): "He - er she's with me and this is for the damages to the room. Sorry, won't happen again"! He drops some coins on the bar and joins the party - introducing the strange creature he 'found in his room and made friends with' as he ponders a name for her.
"Oh and by the way..." (BOOM) he channels healing (twice) to the party. "Don't ask, but yeah I got some sort of healing ability"! Strangely he looks upset by this revelation! :-)

Channel (x2 rerolled the "1") - Injured party members gain 9 hp's.

DM James: The Save DC this round is 16. If you failed previously you are now intoxicated. If you fail this save, save again or you take 1d8 hp non lethal damage. You are also -2 on all mental stats. These penalties last 1d4 hours. You can choose to vomit on any failed save, but you are fatigued for 8 hours afterwards and of course you lose.

Jonsey clapped Einar on the back and the crowd cheered once he was in the contest, John scowled at Kristoph and Rio nodded to them both.

"I love him."
"He's such a sport."
"Yeah, he's going to feel that later though."
"2 silver on Rio!"
"I'll take that, 3 on Big John!"

Kristoph downed the three as easily as John.

"4 on Kristoph!"
"I'll take that. Another 2 on John!"

Issac tried and when he pulled back was rewarded with a wink from the attractive captain. She then turned to Big John and grabbed her fourth pint and threw it back. She seemed to be staggered a bit after that one. Big John made a lewd face and downed his fourth like it was nothing. It looked like this was going to be his day. Jonsey had waited and with everyone else having gone he started slow and got it down within the time limit, but it just wasn't his day and he pushed away from the table. Trag did as well.

It was Just Kristoph, Rio, John, and Einar left. Einar and Kristoph still had their fourth one waiting for them.

DM James:
John
Kristoph
Rio - Stage 1
Einar - Stage 1

"I told you. John's gonna win it."
"Kristoph has got this."
"Is that a green vine coming out 'o his ear?"
"Rio looks sweet on Einar."
"He should run then."
"Jonsey's daughter ain't lookin' too happy."
"He quit anyway."

Ralphus accepted the coin as he looked at the blue cat.

DM James: Everyone still in the game on round 2 gets a +1 circumstance bonus on Diplomacy for 48 hours.

The barbarian stands up from his chair and wobbles on his legs...

"Wait wait wait... " he's clearly drunk already
"I can do one more... hang on...", he appears to be gazing at his chair...
"Next time my chair comes around I'll jump on it... ", Einar stands ready to jump on his chair... it seems the chair is running around the table... yet... it stands firmly in place of course...

"EINAR STORMFLOWER... ", Selene, Einar's girlfriend and follower of Maab enters the bar... she looks furious!!

"WHAT IN THE NAME OF MOTHER MAAB DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?!?! "

Compared to Einar, Selene's very fragile looking yet the way she stamps through the bar makes many stand aside. There's no thing more serious than that woman's face right now and no one... I mean NO ONE... wants to be in Einar's place... She stops in front if her Barbarian... he stands towering in front of her with a goofy smile on his face... wobbeling on his legs...

"...get a kiss..." he stammers pouting his lips...

"REALLY?!? I TOLD YOU TO BEHAVE... YOU GO TO OUR ROOM NOW YOU DRUNK FOOL!! BEGONE!!! "

Einar takes a last glance at the table... and stumbles out of the bar to the room he and Selene rented here in the tavern. Selene looks at the table and sighs... "I do apologize for his behavior... please don't let this spoil your evening games."

Selene proudly walks out of the bar.
Well then... I guess people will laugh about this for some time and Einar... he'll try to sleep his hangover away...

But what really catches his eye is when Kristoph come downstairs with a fiery feline. "WHOA! What the heck is that Kris? You got a firecat! That's awesome. You should name it Teaser. Wow. What's it eat? And I thought it was hard giving a regular cat a bath! Can I pet it?"

Snark comes carefully over to the creature and speaks kindly to the thing, trying to pet it but realizing from the heat that's a bad idea. Then he tries offering it a bit of food, but later opens his pack and puts some parchment into a clay dish for the fire creature to "eat". He's really quite taken with the thing.

"Oooooo. That's not good."
"Poor Einar, I should go rescue him. I have a Witch charm that might help him."
"Oh no you don't. She'll Keal you."
"Does it keep witches away? I owe Captain Rio some money..."
"What's the cat's name? Bluesius? Is he lucky?"
"Blueanna?"
"Bluemer?"
"BaLuu?"
"Hey Harold, you still have that lucky coin?"
"Right here!"
"Hey, I think I saw Waldo outside."
"Waldo's gonna need that coin..."

More than one person commented on the flaming blue cat, but no one went near it for fear of getting burned. Ralphus eventually worked up the nerve to suggest that Kristoph take the cat elsewhere. He can't have fire hazards in his establishment. Normally he'd suggest the stable, but putting a fire thing among so many flammable objects wouldn't be wise. He suggested that the forge at the blacksmith's shop might be a suitable location to keep the cat.

Jonsey exited the Inn with his daughter on his heels. You could hear her admonishing him in much the same way Einar was a few moments ago. Even after the door swung closed you could hear her going on about his irresponsibility, how they were going to pay for his bar bill, and when he was going to find work for someone of his advanced years. As the conversation trailed off you heard him mention that he still had his boat. It wasn't much, but he was bringing in enough to feed them. Then the fussing started all over again, this time about being foolish for continuing to fish.

At the mention of Waldo being outside, Big John stopped mid drink and burst from the building in pursuit of the adulterer shepherd.

"Well, he's out." Ralphus. announced. "Looks like you won Miss Rio!"

Rio smiled and tried to stand, she wobbled a moment and then fell flat on her face as everyone looked around. Finally eyes fell upon Kristoph who happened to still be standing AND not sick. "WE HAVE A WINNER!"

With the contest over and a few of the Luck Makers already bedded down for the night the little pub area settled into a bubbling of voices and laughter as everyone felt good about the fish and it's return. Snark and Kristoph chatted about the blue fire cat while Captain Rio was carried back to her ship.

Perception DC 39 Highlight to display spoiler: {It appears as if Miss Rio might have been faking. As she's lifted up you can see she moves as if she's not really out of it.}

"Don't know why old Jeffer rubbed them all, Clearly the third fish was the lucky one."
"He put all those other fish in with it, maybe we'll have ten lucky fish one day."
"It would be great to have my own lucky fish in a bowl in the window one day."
"I don't think he can tell them apart. Everyone knows the lucky fish had a small speck on it's right fin."

The evening progresses without incident and everyone eventually makes their way to their rooms or exits for home. A few sailors throw a blanket on the floor near a wall and bed down there.

The next morning they all woke to pattering rain on the slate shingles above their heads. The sounds of running water woke each as the rivulets of rain water flowed down the roof and down the side of the inn. In the street below the channel in the middle was filled with fast moving water as it traveled to the bay and out to sea. A craftsman was slowly pushing his cart along the cobbles on the way to his job as it clattered down the street. He held onto his hat from an occasional gust that also made the windows flex and pop.

Above the sky was dark with angry looking clouds and the bay with it's ships arrayed in seemingly random patterns were barely visible through the chill rain and mist.

Below came the smell of food being prepared with the distinctive aroma of frying potatoes wafting up to greet them.

DM James: Kristoph gets a +4 Circumstance bonus on Diplomacy checks as stated until someone beats him at a drinking contest. If he doesn't compete, he'll lose one bonus point each week. Until the module is ready you can do some exploring about the area, talk among yourselves, or investigate anything mentioned that intrigues you.

The cleric doesn’t respond to Snark and then the gnome is off on another thing that caught his attention. It makes the elf smile.

Benni bunks down with the team, he was invited after all, and wakes in the morning. Cleaning, dressing, a bit of meditation to include remembering his thankfulness at a new team and new opportunity…. Dressed, the elf adjusts his WLA symbol and woven Flower medallion and comes to break his fast.

He offers for everyone interested to escort them to find his senior WLA, Akoka. ”she is an armored and well muscled elf maid: shouldn’t be too difficult to find her in a town of this size. Though I confess I didn’t ask where she was going to be staying…”

"So you're one of the heroes I've heard so much about eh? I certainly haven't seen you around before. Way I hear it, you killed a sea serpent with your bare hands and wrested back a school of magical fish from the inky depths themselves. I lost track of how many times I woke during the night with either my clothes, bed or some part of my room on fire.
She seems to have the attention span of a goldfish.
Sure, she does what I tell her, but then several heart-beats later - off she trots to ignite something else!
It's not like she's even remotely keen on learning and more importantly - she NEVER seems to sleep!

Unable to take my eyes off of her I took her outside and would you believe it? It started to rain.
Zero sleep.
No access to spells.
Maybe I miss-judged this. Perhaps I'm not a cleric after all.
If I am though, it kinda sucks that on the day an atheist found religion he was rewarded with a pyro-maniac, flammable trophy!

====================

The next morning Kristoph drops more coin and looks sheepishly at Ralphus, reassuring the inn-keeper that the fire cat would be gone by nightfall.

Later Kristoph grimly nods in agreement with Snarks assessment of the excess precipitation.
Yawning he stares out at the rain, half asleep as Blusinda looks up a the gnome, perhaps in expectation of more parchment?

"I like to call by the blacksmith's shop either before or after visiting Akoka"

He looks down at the blue-fire-cat like he's riddled with guilt for betraying her tiny trust. On the other hand he had no more socks to wake up with on fire. She had to find a place to sleep.

DM JamesM: One Rainy Day Map
Thursday October 7th, 2021 9:42:07 AM

Benni, Drotar, Issac, Einar, and Teddy find themselves in the Inn's Pub looking for breakfast. Ralphus isn't up yet this morning as a young woman emerged with four plates from the kitchen. Each was piled high according to patron size with shredded pan fried potatoes with onions, cheese, and sausage atop them. The dish looked hearty and filling. Just what was needed on a cold and wet day like this.

Elsewhere a fatigued Kristoph and refreshed Snark discuss finding Akoka. Snark is ready to head out into the rainy morning immediately. Kristoph apparently considered Ralphus' suggestion to visit the blacksmith. His little firecat looked out the window apprehensively, or so it seemed to Kristoph.

While those downstairs discussed the recent adventure a few people wandered in. Each wore a stylish hat with a green feather in it. Some were more wet than others. The gusting wind from the rain storm outside sent a gentle but cool breeze into the room each time the door opened. A fire lit in the hearth actually made the room uncomfortably warm, but it was the perfect place to dry off after coming inside. You could see several coats draped over the back of chairs doing just that.

Outside the small port town was waking up and more people were moving about. They could hear a few more workmen pushing carts that clattered down the street on the way to jobs about town as servants rushed about busily on errands for their employers. You could also hear the muted horn on one of the ships in port being blown as it moved through the fogged in port.

"Must be the Sea Witch." commented the server when one of the patrons looked up questioningly. "Captain Rio is the only one with enough magic to navigate the port in this weather. They don't call her ship the Sea Witch for nothing."

Moments later the sounds of hammering rain on the roof above rose above the din of those talking in the room. Everyone stopped talking for a moment to listen, then continued their conversations. A quick look outside and it was evident that they were under a particularly intense bit of cloud.

"Miss Rio said it would last all day." offered the server as she whisked from the room back to the kitchen to return a few moments later with beverages. As she left the room each time she kissed her finger tips and touched a feathered object on the wall next to the door. "We have apple juice from Jeffers orchards. It's a decent bit until he ferments it for the yule." she said as she made a face.

"You got wet George, need to get your charm replaced."
"You think?"
"Still working on that railing on the Stormrunner?"
"Yeah, the boatswain didn't want me on deck in all this rain. Said ter wait until it clears. Probably be tomorrow."
"My son said some of Waldo's sheep were in his field this morning. He was going to run 'em off when Waldo's dog ran out and herded them up."
"That's a good dog."
"Trag get home last night?"
"Yeah. I walked him home. Feller name of Kristoph won last night. Seems a good sort."
"Hmmm. Heard he had an interesting pet."
"Some kind of lucky blue fire cat, I wouldn't touch it though."
"You see that frog outside?"
"You mean the one th' size o' my horse?"
"Yeah, that one. It seemed to be enjoying the rain."
"Indeed."
"You been to the stump?"
"NO. You shouldn't either, that thing is haunted. Took Jim's little girl last year."

When the rain becomes an almost torrential downpour Kristoph decides against venturing out to the blacksmiths.
Joining the party and orders some of the shredded pan fried potatoes with onions, cheese and sausage and nods a greeting to Drotar.

Curious about something he overhears he asks:
"Hi, sorry to interrupt your breakfast friend, my name's Kristoph, I couldn't help but overhear you talking about the 'stump', sounds horrible! Mind if I ask what happened to Jim's little girl last year"?

The blue-fire-cat approaches the fire place sniffs and then cuddles up in the fire - turning it blue.

"You keep that in there at night and I'm sure Ralphus would let you keep her here. That or you'll go broke." said the serving girl from the kitchen door.

Snark cranes his neck to look up that the giant guy in a Turban. The little gnome is dressed in Green robes - more of a long coat really - over breeches. He has sky blue hair and beard. He reaches up to shake the man's massive hand.

"You heard about us, eh? Sounds like things got a bit exaggerated. I'm Snark Riverstone and these are my new friends. We have a battle frog and a firecat in our group too."

Snark will ask politely about some breakfast and offer to buy his new meatshield, er travelling companion, some as well. With a full mouth he says to the man, "So, Doctor huh? Are you a real doctor? How'd you wind up here? Hey - you want some breakfast?"

Once there is a break in the rain he will go to see about joining the WLA.

You can see Selene entering the room too but she immediately goes into the kitchen where she's helping out to pay for the rent.

Once he feels better he gets acquainted with Drotar.

When Snark shows some interest in the WLA Einar walks up to him. "I'd be happy to join you visiting the WLA to check if we're able to join them..."

"I ah...I already ate....did you say you have a frog?"

He decides to let the doctor comment drop for now and just hopes they don't expect him to perform any actual medical procedures, as he has little study of even basic first aid. Pinching his brow, he sighs. While working in a group was clearly great for fighting, he isn't exactly the most skilled at social interaction.

A slightly unkempt brown-haired elf follows Snark and Einar to greet the turbaned man. He is in simple clothes with elaborate embroidery and counter-stitching in a wild flower motif, but most is covered by his armor and a sleeveless calf-length coat. Summer sky eyes watch without weighing, and a woven ivy and willow design in High Woldian is on a woven band around his neck.

A peaceful tenor chimes, ”Onesimos Elpis greets you in our time in the Wold. I have only met these heroes of luck myself, but don’t worry about the gnome’s directness and interest of the moment. At least I don’t think we should worry., he ends in a smile to share the joke with everyone.

”Oh, and call me Benni.”

Benni waits patiently until all the Luck Makers who want to go to join the WLA are ready to leave. No worries in rushing out into the storm.

As big as a human, heck bigger then many humans at 6 feet tall, he looks like a regular frog, though enormous, not humanoid like some sort of giant beastfolk.

The entire crew, sans Gore'Thrum ended up downstairs in Bluecinda's tavern as apparently the cat had claimed it by settling into the fireplace. As the blueish light cast it's tint on everything in the tavern the patrons seemed to brighten somewhat.

"I like that cat."
"Lucky. So I'm told."
"We should tell everyone ter come to the Blue Cat Tavern."
"I can feel me feet warming up. Hadn't had warm feet in ages."

Amid the conversation Kristoph approached the one he heard talking about the stump. Issac was close behind with his own questions and between the two had the local talking in short order.

"Yep. 'Bout this time o' year people stay away from it. Smart People." he added with a side long glance at his friend. "Damn tree grows back to full size, complete with a man swinging from the branch. Stupid folk." he again glances at his friend."Think that if they can see that spectacle and live to tell about it they'll have good luck for the next year. Good thing is most people are smart and only a handful try it. Little Amy snuck a peak last year and the next day they found her body at the foot of the town wall. Layin' there on the rocks all broke up. It were a shame. The whole town mourned her. Don't know much else, Prissy were there back in the day, she'd know more."

Outside the rain was letting up as it seemed the increased downpour was only temporary. You could see a few brave souls step out from under awnings and hurry down the street in the hope that they'd avoid the worst of it if they moved quickly.

Ralph had come into the tavern by then and he immediately saw the cat in the fireplace and how it was affecting his patrons. He grabbed Kristoph by the arm and pulled him aside.

Blusinda enjoys consuming the dead material her 'flock' bring and revels in the attention, in turn she shines as bright as she can, giving her all and bathing them all in her blue radiance.

Kristoph shakes his head, she's a cat and technically not even that - not a god! Inner conflict stretches his thoughts like strands of a spider web: proud step-parent, over-bearing guardian, concerned pet-owner, non-fan-of-the-gods turned cleric and 'Fire-Watch'! Unable to decide if he will ever relax around her or if he's just suffering from lack of sleep, he sighs as it all churns away inside.
The spoon he was raising to his mouth pauses as he watches the fireplace. A mouth appears and chomps into a fire log. She seems happy - truly happy and that brings a smile to his lips.
Isn't all that matters right now?
His 'charge' was content.

When Ralph pulls him aside Kristoph nods 'sure' and shakes his hand thanking him, more of a tired reaction fueled by relief. He'd been imagining some bleak outcomes over the last few hours - including them both sleeping in the woods in the rain.

He could feel her delight, pride and arrogance.
Hey everyone was happy - he let it go and savored the moment.
The food, smiles, comradeship, jokes.
Maybe everything he thought he knew was upside down.
His brain hurt.

He eats silently present in the moment, listening to the local as he tells his story and nearly drops his spoon when the story takes a darker turn: 'a man swinging from the branch'.
He looks sideways at some of the party.
"Is anyone thinking what I'm thinking"? he asks before sipping his broth.

(Perception: 20)

The townsfolk seem to be accepting the group as lucky, and the elf spares an inner laugh that a cleric of Wardd would have had a grand time here. ”So why am I here? I’ll follow your lead and find out.” he says out loud to himself.

The small bear with the human-sized pet frog takes him aback. ”It is yours? He is ours?”. The elf tries to get ahold of his emotions and thoughts.

But enough of that. He meanders over to Kristophe, to try and pierce why he’s looking so intently out the window.

DM JamesM: The Tradehouse Map
Monday October 11th, 2021 8:55:30 AM

They sloshed through the streets to the center of town and crossed only when needed since the water at it's center was a little deeper than at it's edges. As they moved the sounds of splashing feet of passersby greeted them at each turn. High above in the sky they could hear the wind whipping by as each gust came down and whistled through the streets. Cloaks, hats, and coats were its victims as they were torn away briefly in the gusts only to fall back into place or sit securely once more when the wind had subsided.

At the old WLA camp Kristoph wearily stood in the rain and looked at the mural on the building. As he turned he saw the WLA badge in a window of the tradehouse, but he said nothing. Benni stepped up beside Kristoph and looked across the way where the man was peering and pointed out the window to him. Tae-Che also spotted something in the window and mentioned a badge. Once Snark had his attention drawn to the badge in the window he lead the others there. Teddy and Einar follow along with the others.

As they approached the tradehouse they saw it was not one building, but several built closely together. Wooden shields affixed to the side of the structure were actually signs with the service and goods offered within. "Charms, Curses, and Cures! - Elle the Gifted"  proclaimed one sign, "Weather Charms!" proclaimed another, and one particularly bright red one with black letters stated simply, "Equipment, Tackle, and Gear, Filael."

They entered on the right side as they approached. It was a simple door with little adornment and possibly just a side entrance. When the door was opened the smell of incense and wafted out of the dark interior. They could see nine stalls each with an everburning torch mounted near its opening. Some of the stalls were open to the walkway, others had curtains drawn with one small opening for customers. The one on their immediate right had an "away" sign likely left there the previous day. The next two stalls were unmanned as well with the curtains drawn, but the large stall just inside had an old gentleman arranging fishing tackle into small wooden boxes. Next to him was a spool of heavy wire, different colored twine, a few glass jars with assorted corks of varying sizes and  colors. On the table next to that was a metal file and snips. Overhead on the ceiling poles of varying lengths and thicknesses lay across the beams.  An old and wet cloak hung from a peg on the wall. He greeted you from behind a set of crates as you entered

"Mornin', most folk haven't shown up yet. Guess the rain's keepin' 'em in. Can I help you with anythin' ?" he said peering from overtop a crate labeled "wellys".

At the far end they could see a large freshly painted WLA shield hanging next to a window. The stall the WLA shield was next to was lit as well and had noise coming from it that sounded like someone was upending the place.

The old man heard it too. "Been like that all morning. Lady been makin' an awful fuss gettin' her gear sorted."

In the Tradehouse....

Akoka breathes a sigh of relief as the group pitches to and starts helping to organize the area. While a few start to gather the items from around them, she locates a stack of parchment and sorts through it for a few minutes.

"This looks like the one." She said as she held up the form and set it on a table. "Write your name here." she said pointing to a line on the form."your organization name, if you have one...here." she said pointing to an adjacent line. "and if you want to associate yourself with a new organization, sign and date this form. Oh and check this box to acknowledge you agree with the WLA's precepts." she finished as she pulled out another paper and handed each of them a small booklet.

"Here, take these in your left hand. No.no.no. Keep it in your left hand." she said as she handed out new badges she had laying in a small box at the back of the stall. and raise your right hand and repeat after me."

“I, state your name, do solemnly swear to uphold the ideals of the League, to protect the innocent and combat evil wherever I may find it.”

As each stated the oath they could feel a part of their soul get sucked into the badge....well, it got warm. When they were done Akoka shook each person's hand to congratulate them.

Tree...oh, the Haunted Stump. Yes, I've heard about it. Something happened some years ago but I don't have any details. It's likely that...Prissy was it? Knows something. I did hear she was there when it all happened. Something else too. Have you seen Waldo? I hear he's missing. "

At the Bottim Inn and the Blue Cat Tavern....

Teddy sat there as more people shuffled in from the rain outside. It seemed the tavern had some regular traffic all day as people came in from the ships that didn't particularly want ship board faire. Most were complaining that the port was fogged in and the ships weren't departing until tomorrow when most thought the weather would lift.

It was dry in the room however and the puddle on the floor would be gone soon. In fact teddy's nose was starting to dry out from the lack of humidity in the place. Likely the result of that blue cat in the fireplace.

"Thick as pea soup out there."
"Sea Witch made it out."

Kristoph takes the oath and after agrees with Benni.
His curiosity over the stump now multiplied.

"That's sad news about the WLA administrator. Don't think there's a lot we can do about pirates, but I'm happy to go look for Waldo"!

”So I believe and so you believe, Snark, and I think you have the right of it. But I have also found it useful to talk in a way for others to listen. Telling someone they are wrong is rarely the first step in getting them to change.”

Isaac speaks up having been quite for awhile as they were helping clean the area "I'm sorry to hear that about the administrator." He signs and dates the paper work she hands him and with that complete he imitates her oath "I Isaac , do solemnly swear to uphold the ideals of the League, to protect the innocent and combat evil wherever I may find it." He feels weird as the badge does it's magic. "Ugh" he shakes his hand after putting the badge away it felt like it had fallen asleep from the magic. "So question I know that more advanced members have to pay dues do you take only gold or can it be supplemented by work or items we acquire out in the field?"

Gore'Thum looks at Teddy. "You should learn weather detection magic. It'd let you make some extra money." Teddy looks crestfallen. "I was hoping for a break from lessons?" he asks hopefully. Gore'Thum snorts. "Every day is a lesson, even if it's just how to relax and interact with others. For today lets work on weather magic." and soon the giant toad has Teddy back up in his room practicing his Bloodwitch skills.

At the Tradehouse...

When Benni asked if the stump was near where Waldo grazed his sheep, Akoka replied. "Oh no. The stump is down by the water east of town. Waldo used the fields south of here near the forests edge...well him and his dog "Getter""

Snark thanked Akoka and made some comments about how one made their own luck and it wasn't really a thing. He also created an unseen servant that set about straightening up the stall. Benni sagely reminded Snark that they'd need to tread carefully when telling people they were wrong if they wanted them to change.

From his place at the mouth of the WLA stall he looks about. Most of the stalls in this building are closed except for this one and Filaels at the entrance. He, like all of the other heroes know that Corinn's across from Filael's is where the catacombs entrance is. She has a small port key on the wall next to her monkey finger that transports one to the catacombs. There may be some additional shops upstairs or in the rest of the complex through the northern exit.

Tae-Che was happy to be out of the rain, though the darkened days felt good upon her skin.

Akoka noticed Drokar's reaction to the badge. "The badge bonds itself to you and is itself a magic item of sorts. For instance your badge won't work for another or they yours."

Akoka nodded at Kristoph's comment about pirates. When he mentioned Waldo she said. "I'm sure he'll turn up as soon as John forgets Waldo was messing with his girl."'

Isaac apologized about the administrator, signed and dated the forms as needed, then asked about dues as they advanced in the WLA.

Akoka collected the forms and shuffled them into an order only she was able to divine as needed as Isaac spoke. "Mostly... Akoka replied as she glanced at the forms in her hand. "Mr. Harker, the WLA takes in money. When a proper administrator arrives he'll know the way of it, but I know the WLA has it's eye on the old Abbey south of town. When you are ready I'm confident the task of clearing that out for us could be used in lieu of dues. Presently the haunts of that place are too strong. The negative energy there is dangerous and it's best to stay away. See this scar?" Akoka said as she ran a finger down her arm. "Animated armor. Halberd nearly took my arm off when I turned away from it. There was also this constant urge to flee..the place is frightening."

In the Blue Cat Tavern...

Teddy and Gore'Thum retire to their room to study weather magic.

Drotar listens to Akoka's speach, nodding solemnly. When they return to the tavern, he sits and listens to the conversations in the main room, listening out for anything related to the abbey.

Benni reassesses his thoughts. If Waldo will turn up, the next most obvious place is…. ”So we are to investigate the hanging tree?”

The magic lesson does not go well. It turns out weather magic is devilishly tricky and it is quickly shown to be vastly beyond the scope of Teddy's skills at the moment (Bloodwitches don't learn any weather related magic, at least not up to 4th level spells XD)
