Naithi (JamesD) AC: 19/13/17 HP: 50/50 , CMD = 16
Wednesday September 29th, 2021 10:12:24 PM

I cuddle Camalayas closer as we approach the city. Do we want to make plans? I think we should at least decide to stick together in groups if we are splitting up. The thieves guild may still be looking for us.

DM Kathy

[Everybody take 1,000 XP for the previous scene.]

As you approach the city, Naithi reminds everyone that the Thieves' Guild may still be looking for you. It's probably best to stick together.

Zazu and Sahabiel find that their skills are not suited to finding their way through a city--even an elven city like Karri.

As is customary among the elves, the city makes an effort to blend with its natural surroundings. It cannot blend completely, of course--you can't have a city this large without a lot of buildings--but you often pass patches of meadow or young forest that seem to be left untouched on purpose.

Beech finds a city guard to ask directions of. You get directions to the general neighborhood, but you still need to find the specific address. But Lothlo is totally on top of that. It's still a bit early in the day for meat on a stick, but you find a small stand doing a brisk business selling some kind of hot drink and fried dough. The women there know the brook you're looking for (wait, brook? not street?), and point you in the right direction.

On the way, Ash wonders if you'll be able to sell the jewelry. The answer is yes. According to the game rules, jewelry like this is basically money. If you want to role-play selling it, that's fine, but you could just spend it like money if you wanted to.

You head for the address, and find that it is indeed on a brook--not a street or a road. A little footpath along the bank allows you to find the cottage you're looking for without getting your feet wet. The cottage is small, snug, and very like its neighbors. A thin trickle of smoke comes from the chimney--somebody is home.

Before we get to the house, Zazu sees to the selling of the jewelry and sharing out the proceeds equally. At the same time, how about that mother of pearl shell material we found in the underground cave? Zazu makes inquiries: What's that worth, as a trade good? As a jewelry component? Is it special and rare, or commonplace?

At the residence, suddenly shy, Zazu lets someone else knock on the door and offers a little gentle advice. "Remember, we're a large group of heavily armed people. Do let's try not to be too intimidating, right?"

Ash dusts down the front of her clothes and uses a little Prestidigitation to get the last few spots clean.

She clears her throat, smiles and then gives a short rap on the door. As a young woman and with no visible weapons she doesn't think she looks intimidating. "Hello? Is anyone home?". She places her hands behind her back and rocks back and forth on her feet as she patiently waits for the door to be answered.

Nightingale is fine with her place at the watch. She is also interested in the town they are visiting, but remaining quiet at this time, not quite uncomfortable in a town, she'd prefer being in the out-fo-doors

Beech (JohnC) AC 14(18)/14/14,HP 20/20 Character
Thursday September 30th, 2021 1:43:23 PM

To Sahabiel, "This is only a town maybe a bit larger than some, but this is no city. I've been to a few real cities with my mom, when she has been running errands or just searching for rare ingredients. On the side of the Wold, There's Plateau City, Imod City and the real strange city is The Float. Another strange city, I haven't been there, but it's in the other hemisphere, is called Hook City. apparently there's a huge bridge being held up by these magical giant hooks just hanging from the sky.
What I think we are striving for back at our location is to eventually reach this size, but that's years in the future, unless we find gold or diamonds or something else to bring a rush of people there."

Beech joins in cleaning up travel stains from the group. Who knows who will be answering the door.

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 22/11/21 -- HP: 40/40
Thursday September 30th, 2021 7:28:20 PM

Sahabiel ponders what Beech tells her. "A lot of new people all coming in a rush, sorta sounds like a bigger problem for a new settlement than gold or diamonds should be worth, so I half hope ya don't find something as troublesome as that.", she eventually replies. "I believe that slow and steady is better... Yer foodcrops will need seasons ta grow, right? Good houses, time ta build. Good neighbors, time ta get ta know each other in some stability. That's not things ya can decide today ya need twice as many of tomorrow as ya had yesterday."

When Ash knocks on the door of the cottage matching the address, Sahabiel assumes the most diplomatic position for someone dressed like she is, which means out of line of sight and preferably behind a nearby corner.

Zazu is easily able to change the jewelry pieces into coins to divide among the party. As for the mother-of-pearl, its value is roughly equivalent to that of agates, or lapis lazuli--the very lowest quality of things that count as gems. It is not absolutely unique, but it does seem to be unique to the area of the Culverwood, and possibly to Izen as well. Your DM intended it as a cool resource for the town's crafters, not as a source of income by itself.

Sahabiel and Beech discuss towns and cities.

Naithi and Nightingale hang back as Ash cleans herself up a bit and then knocks on the door. There is a pause. Rather a long pause. At last, the door creaks open a few inches, and Ash finds herself regarded by an older elf man with bluish-green eyes and a suspicious expression. "Yes?" he says.

She isn't quite sure who is holding the letter at the moment so waits for it to be handed over.

There was also a satchel with a spare shirt, a hat and gloves, and a letter, sealed with wax. We did not open the letter. Here it is."

We took good care of the poor dead lass. And we found the satchel and the letter. I guess you worry it's a trap. It's not. No need to worry about us. Sahabiel, concealed and alert, reads the mood in the man's reaction and voice just fine (Sense Motive 1d20+4 = 24), but from her position may not quite see everything (Perception 1d20+6 = 9). She does wonder a bit about the way how her companions chose to deliver that rather.. raw.. message.

As a test of character though, the cottage occupant to her seems to have his moral priorities straight - Sahabiel believes that if a man were arrogant or did not have a heart, he would experience anger before the genuine sadness she just caught coming from him.

She will give her companions a little longer to talk to the older elf, but Sahabiel is already considering how she might approach the scene without making it more tense...

Beech sees that he's nervous about the group, well, who wouldn't worry about a group of armed strangers arriving their door announcing they were just dropping off a letter. And that he doesn't look like he's unskilled in the art of combat.
"Sir, I'm sorry, we as a group should have sent a single person to deliver this letter and the message about our burying remains we discovered. At the same time now that I think about it, we should also have included a map to where we laid her to rest.
Here we are, a group of mixed races of various abilities, it must seem we want something in return for doing something we consider the right thing, that is the farthest thing from most of our minds. We decided to stay together not over any fear of making this delivery, but we've had a run in or two with a shadow guild of sorts, as in a group claiming to be part of a larger organization, whom we have since been informed is not the case. But that's not your worries, but just a reason we stuck close by each other.
As was stated, we will withdraw to the small food vendor down the street for an hour or so. If you wish to know more of what we know, please feel free to join us down there, we will be enjoying a early meal, before we start our return journey back to our encampment and future village once we've picked up the supplies we need."

With that Beech starts trying to "nudge" everyone away and leave him alone to make up his own mind and take in the news...

Meanwhile....

"Yes, all right," the man says to Zazu. "You open the letter and read it to me."

When Zazu opens the letter, he sees it is pretty short, written in Elvish. He starts to read:

(OOC: This was supposed to have been my Tuesday post)

With Beech being easily the most charismatic among them, at least in Sahabiel's opinion, she decides she has spent enough time staying out of sight and uses the liontaur as her pretext to arrive. When she approaches, in a non-threatening and dignified manner of walking, she very deliberately has her eyes and footsteps directed to Beech, not to the elf he is speaking to. "Young master, have ya delivered your found missive?", she asks in her wood-elf accented common while giving Beech a gentle and polite smile, and a hand gesture of respectful salutation.

Every piece of Sahabiel's suit of armor and armament is masterwork quality and of elven design, and her pride has no qualm with allowing herself to be a shiny accessory 'in entourage' to lend credibility to her friend.

(Taking our DM's hint. Sahabiel is of above average charisma herself, which makes Take 10 an automatic success (11) on Aid Another (Diplomacy), providing +2 to any Diplomacy effort by Beech)

Panzer shifts his hands from the hilts of the Kukri at his belt to the belt itself, so as to seem less threatening.
As the new folks enter the elf's home he does his level best to be hospitable. He bows to the group of adventurers and says, " My name is Panzer Braun, I am pleased to meet you."
Panzer appears to be a man shaped Honey Badger about 3 and a half feet tall. He has fur, a tail, whiskers and the teeth of a honey badger but his paws are much closer to hands and feet than to animal paws. His fur is fairly thick but his hide seems loose. He wears sturdy traveling clothes and under them he wears a very light chain shirt made of Mithril. The hilts of many knives poke from sheathes on his belt and across his back. Physically he looks fairly powerful, as if he works lifting heavy objects most of the time.
As the others start talking he takes particular interest in Lotholo. " Did you say something about a thieves guild? did they have ratkin in that guild? I was attacked by a group just a couple of nights ago. near here and it sure seemed like they wanted me dead. I don't know why but I barely escaped with my life. "Mister Braun, nice to meet you. We have had ... disagreements ... with the Thieves' Guild, honestly, but I do not recall any ratkin. Does anybody else? Sometimes my head gets full of spells and crowds out other stuff."

"But as a rogue, I hope you'll accept my sympathies for the attack on you. A hundred years ago, when I was very young, the thieves were the rebels fighting Parnoth and helping others win their freedom from the Dragon Tyrant. Now ... I just don't know. It makes me sad to think of my childhood heroes as villains, but, well, things change faster than elves would prefer, I guess."

Speaking of elves, Zazu looks to the older elf who opened the door and gives a little half-bow, half-curtsey. "I'm sorry, did you give us your name, sir? I hope we can be friends." ... then launches into an accounting of family and elves known in the past to see if there are any acquaintances in common.

I sit astride Camalayas, a soft furred dire rabbit, and lean forward. After giving her a hug and scratching her fur I tell her to turn around and join the others.

As we move towards the building, I try to hide my reactions. Panzer reminds me of a cuddly animal, not that I would say that out loud. Men are weird about such things.

Once inside, you notice my hide armor covers most of my outfit. To most people, I must look like a child, a fairie, or some cross of the two. People always mistake my race's facial features for youthful innocence. It also doesn't help that I come up to most of their thighs and weigh less than their armor. (3'6", 30lbs, 15 yrs).

My name is Naithi (N-eye-thee), also known as Murder Muppet, a nickname I earned as a slave in the orc gladiator pits. You can probably tell by my appearance that I am one of the beastfolk. Specifically I am a Sloth-kin, which most would lump in with the Ursine or Bearfolk.

Camalayaas, my dire rabbit (reskinned large cat), and I are hunters and adventures along with my guard dog Fizzgig. I also have my trusted Cuddly Mule carrying our gear.

ooc: Naithi was a druid and just took a level of Lost Child and Camalayas is her Wild Sibling. Camalayas has an Int of 6 and is intelligent. Her and Naithi share a hit point pool. If one is hit they are both injured. While Camalayas became more like a beast folk, Naithi became more wild. She takes a penalty with manufactured weapons and most social skills. She now uses primarily claw and bite attacks.

Next level she is taking Morphling, so there will be a lot of shape shifting. After 5 levels she will become fairykin. Picture a future fairy, with fairy wings, that rides a rabbit into battle. She is obsessed with cuddly animals. Most monsters she either wants to tame (cuddly) or cook (anything not cuddly or intelligent).

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 22/11/21 -- HP: 40/40
Wednesday October 6th, 2021 11:01:19 PM

While cautious, Sahabiel follows into the cottage with the others. Even in the lesser light inside, her features look balanced betwixt human and elf, although her greenish skin and trained, muscular build beneath the high quality elven armor would excuse anyone thinking there might be more to the mix. She carries a heavy shield and a morning star in similar style to the rest of her visible gear, and moves around with ease as if the weight of it all means little to her.

The brown haired young woman wears a holy symbol on her neck which, this close to it, would be fairly common knowledge as being associated with the ancient power of the Culverwood itself - or more particularly in all likelihood with the various groups keeping outsiders out of it since the days the Tamed Lands were dragon territory.

“Ya may call me Sahabiel, from the interior Culverwood”, she says with her greeting, “This is my first time trav’ling this way. Ya have my thanks fer offering a spot out of the rain.”.

She does not seem inclined to spill her whole life story and reason for being there to a stranger, but it also does not sound as if she would know anything of local circumstances and happenings around Karri.

Introductions are made, and you meet the man named Panzer Braun.

"And I am Galen Thalios," the elf man says. He listens intently as Zazu discusses the Thieves' Guild, your current enmity with them, and how they were more heroic in the past.

"Interesting that you should say so," Galen says, but does not elaborate. "May I?" He takes the message from Zazu, studies it for a moment, then sets it on a table. The inside of this small house is basically one large room, with comfortable furniture arranged in small groups. There is no bed or bedchamber visible--but then, elves don't sleep.

Galen moves to some shelves and searches through them. Then, muttering, he begins opening boxes stored on the floor beneath the shelves. At last, he withdraws a battered book.

"As you may have guessed," he says. "The message is in code. The messenger, I believe, was named Eiyen Tulara." Sadness crosses his face. "I suppose," he says at last, "it is good to know what happened to her. She was a stalwart opponent of Parnoth. Tell me, what became of her bones?"

Nightingale smiles at the two "men." Nightingale is tall and willowy. Her skin appears black, but is actually dark blue. She keeps her white hair tied in a bun, except for one braid that she dies forest green, and generally has flowers mixed into. She wears smoky-glass goggles (Riddick-style) so that she can travel in the brightest of light and not be dazzled. She wears monk’ish outifits that have been embroidered with leaves and flowers. Her sandals are easy for her to kick off, as she prefers to fight with her feet on the ground. Her monk tops are cropped so that her midriff shows. Running around her stomach and ribs are tattto’s of trees and flowers – the ink is magical and the colors change randomly. The only weapons anyone can see are daggers strapped to her calves, at her hips, and at the small of her back. On a living vine necklace is her holy symbol of Queen Maab.

Some prayers were said and her bones are being looked after, though I believe nothing permanent is going to be done until our return. Funeral rights are important, and there was enough concern about bad omens just from finding them. I think the general feeling is that it's better to investigate first and address her wishes as best as possible rather than do anything that could disturb her spirit.

After a moment, the elf tries to summon up a little more sympathy than the rest of the group is showing.

"Mister Thalios, we're a new village, mostly still tents, honestly, and we don't want to build in wood, so we were checking out a potential quarry. On our way back, we saw that our people were upset and sad. They had found a skeleton in the tall grass at the base of a tree. We investigated, and it seemed to us that the person, likely an elf maid, at least five years gone, we guessed, from how the grasses had all grown up around the bones."

"We tried to figure out a cause of death, but we couldn't. Teeth marks of little wild things were on the bones, but that was after. Ms Sahabiel here offered some prayers from her clerical training. We set the bones aside respectfully, either for later burial in our own cemetery, or for family or friends to claim."

"And we found her satchel, and the message addressed here, and decided to deliver it. That's the whole story."

When her small part in the matter is brought up, she nods at Galen and Panzer in respectful silence, before adding for Galen Thalios, softly and in Elven, "If there is anything further you would ask me to observe for her remains, please do not hesitate to ask." [Also OOC: Your host's name is Galen. Parnoth is the name of the evil dragon tyrant who once ruled the Emerald Kingdom.]

Lothlo and Zazu describe what had happened to the bones. "I think they can be interred near your village," Galen says, "unless your people object. She did not have close family. I will try to get word to what family remains."

Naithi asks if they were close. "Not really," Galen replies. "All of us who resisted the tyrant's rule feel a certain kinship with one another, but I only met her a few times."

"Now," he continues, "let us see what this final message contained." He opens the battered book he found, and spends some time scratching notes on a page, obviously decoding the message with the code in the book. At last, he sits back. "Hmm," he says thoughtfully.

But when he speaks again, it seems to be on a completely different topic. "I did hear something about a new town being founded. People escaping orcs? Something like that? Tell me of this town of yours."

She places a hand on Ash' shoulder and shakes her head. "Ash... the remains we found were bone and a decayed satchel. Had it occurred to ya that when this Eiyen Tulara set out on what was to be her last message delivery, the struggle against the tyrant may have still been ongoing? It was not that long ago."

With her hand still on Ash, she turns her head back towards the elf that has introduced himself as Galen. "<...for her part in the resistance, if you would be so kind as to confirm your ally's name with her next of kin and send word of it to us, I will see to it that her burial site will be a marked one.>"

That would be us. We escaped the orcs, went back and freed the rest of the slaves, then found a place where we could settle down peacefully. What would you like to know about the village? So far our primary concern has been making sure we have a steady food supply, making sure we are prepared for the river's flooding season, and setting up a trade route since we are on the river. The trade route has made a big difference already. We just got to the point where all our basics are met and we can focus more heavily on setting up sturdy, permanent buildings.

Zazu talks about the people in the new village. "We escaped from the male orcs of the tribe, and then went back and killed them, but we found out that the female orcs were treated just about as bad as us slaves. So we took them with us. The new village is about half orcs, all ladies, and the other half are former slaves, a wide range of races and types. Our goal is to be super welcoming to anybody, especially people fleeing from cruel circumstances."

"And we wanted a spot on the border of the Tamed Lands of the Emerald Kingdom and the Wild Culverwood because the trees seemed protective to us, well, at least to me, after the wide open plains of Izen. No orc will be raiding us seeing as we are on the other side of the river and miles from the Izen border."

I shake my head. I have examined the area thoroughly, and there is no evidence of flooding anywhere. Perhaps it was another rumor started by the thieves guild to keep people away from their camp, but there is no risk of flooding.

ooc: We were too creative for our own good. Per Jerry: Jerry strong point/decision: We’re getting mighty fancy for a town of this size. So I want to remove the “flooding element” even if that means retconning the game.

DM Kathy

Ash asks why there is a need for secrecy and codes since Parnoth is gone. Sahabiel explains that the body had been there long enough to have been part of the resistance. And you do recall that Galen had to search through a couple of boxes to find his codebook, so it's not like he uses it every day.

Unfortunately, your DM wasn't aware that the official timeline had Parnoth's overthrow 80 years ago. There really ought to be some mention of it in the Woldipedia. We're going to play it as if it was 5-10 years ago, at least for now, because this adventure kind of depends on it.

Lothlo relates the story of your escape and the founding of the town, and Zazu provides additional details, and expresses concern for flooding. Naithi thinks it is unlikely. [OOC: Also, I'll remind you that you found the source of the river, and it is underground, not too far from the village. There really isn't enough river to flood until it gets a little further downstream.]

Panzer has some suggestions for building materials, but his father's mine is a considerable distance from Freedom's Landing, so it probably isn't worth trying to ship the rock so far. [Yes, this part of the Wold sees snow in winter.]

Galen nods his approval at the story of Freedom's Landing. "A worthy endeavor," he says, "and the contents of this message may be of some help. I was wondering--"

But at that moment, there's a knock at the door. Frowning, Galen moves to answer it, waving you to stay out of sight. Through the door, you vaguely hear a voice say. "Galen! This is the young fellow I was telling you about. I thought I'd stop by and introduce--"

Galen interrupts. "Yes," he says. "Yes. You'd better come in. There have been....developments." He steps away from the door, allowing an elf and a young human man to enter. "This is my friend Lamruil," he says. "And this young fellow, I believe, is called Sol."

At the command to get out of sight Panzer is quick to comply. Galen has kept him hidden far a day or so now and for some reason wants to keep his presence quiet. Panzer is OK with this since he was in trouble and a bad way when he arrived here. From the spot he chooses to hide in though you can see the glint of a half drawn blade. Galen has been good to him and he won't allow the elf to come to harm. Thankfully it is a friend of Galen's and another traveler.
Panzer straightens from where he was crouched, sicking the blade back in it's sheathe. He extends a hand in greeting to the two new faces and welcomes them offering his name.

Since that was OOC misunderstanding bleeding into IC, I'll pretend that Ash didn't raise the question she did, and Sahabiel now doesn't have a hand on her shoulder when Sol comes in?)

Sahabiel glances at Beech when Galen gestures for them to get out of sight. Unsure how the owner expects eight people including a liontaur to make themselves hidden in a one room cottage, she just moves as close as she can into the corner that wouldn't be seen from the direction the door opens, but if anyone were to actually come inside she would be out of ideas. Fortunately, the new visitors seem to be welcome and she relaxes.

"Sahabiel", she offers her name when it is her turn to, and if Sol looks in her direction he sees that she is an elf-featured young woman with green skin and brown hair. She is currently leaning against the cottage wall, her at ease posture contrasting a little with her professional looking armaments. Despite the elven side of her heritage showing so much in her features, in her overall build she is not delicate, and her choice to carry a heavy morningstar for her melee weapon does much to emphasize this.

"Yes," Galen replies. "Let's begin there. The message is from the days when we were struggling against the reign of the Tyrant. Such activity was, of course, very dangerous. Our messages were sent in code, as you have seen." He gestures vaguely in the direction of the message and the codebook. "Part of the message is, alas, no longer relevant. Movements of Parnoth's spies, that sort of thing. But there is also a description of a supply cache buried on the other side of the river. Buried, if I read the description right, not too far from your Freedom's Landing. I think perhaps there may be some things there a new town could use. Certainly the resistance no longer needs it. Other than that she will hang back and listen to the conversations, not really having much to add except for mentioning the abundance of plants and animals in the region surrounding the growing community. Given the chance she will look around for something to make tea in for the group, almost making her self at home (aka looking for something to do during all the conversations her player doesn't know much about)

Sol raises an eyebrow.

"So we are going on a treasure hunting? That does sound like fun, I must admit."

He smiles his normal easy smile.

"Though I am not from around here, so I do not feel qualified to really talk about the viability of the search or much about the woods themselves. I am here to find new Arcane knowledge... and I felt this place would be a good option. Perhaps this cache will have some? After all, if they were a resistance against a Dragon, it is entirely possible they had some magical bits and pieces."

Zazu thanks Galen for his offer. Sol is hoping for some kind of magic, which certainly isn't impossible.

Naithi and Nightingale mostly listen. Ash is also quiet, and tries to sneak a look at the codebook. It is a codebook. Your DM declines to make up specific phrases and codes, but Ash does see a few.

Panze, Beech, and Sahabiel are curious about the nature of the trouble Galen has been mentioning.

"Yes, that's next," he says. "As your friend Zazu mentioned earlier, there was a time when the Thieves' Guild here in Karri was an important part of the resistance. Oh, it had its share of burglars and cutpurses, but most members were more interested in stealing information and hindering the Tyrant's schemes.

"I myself was not a member," he continues, "being more of a warrior than a spy. Lamruil here," he gestures to his friend, "is a mage, so he was not a member either. Of course, we both had frequent contact with the rogues in the Guild. This house," he gestures around himself, "was frequently used as a dead drop, and even occasionally for meetings.

"When the Tyrant was defeated," he continues, "all of us rejoiced. Perhaps a bit too much. Perhaps we let down our guard. To this day, I am not sure how it happened. A new faction gained control of the Guild. This faction was less interested in nobly helping the people of the Culverwood through unconventional means; they were thieves and cutthroats and cared only for their own gain. The resistance members were ousted, a few were killed, and many barely escaped with their lives.

"And that is the situation we find ourselves in," he concludes. "The Guild is firmly in the hands of this dangerous faction, and those of us in the old resistance worry that they may not be content with the power they have seized."

Ash (RobC) -- AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 12 -- HP 41/41

Ash listens intently. "Do you know if there were other caches left behind? It's also quite possible that the Guild know of it's location. We should probably avoid any delays and hope to get there before they do."

She has some questions first though. Ash gives the pair a description of the woman the party met earlier on the road - the one who delivered a warning. "Do you know who that may have been? Do you know if she is one of the leaders of the Guild? Do you know who the leaders are?"

Finally, she asks about Myre. "Our friend was kidnapped. We've been searching for her and had believed it was the Guild behind it. Recently though we were told that it may be she was taken by something more powerful. Cryptic, I know. Do you have any ides on what it might be?"

Well, knowing that the thieves guild at least used to have honorable roots answers a lot of questions for me. I've only seen first hand the side of what they've become, and the traits those claiming to be among their ranks feel best represents their current values. But hearing where the came from I understand how they could grow to be the force they are today, and how the deeds of others in the past could make one slow to acknowledge the poison that they've become today.

And for what it's worth, we've already seen first hand that they aren't content with their current power they have seized and are surreptitiously trying to gain more... and not so surreptitiously for that matter. There is a little confusion about which acts were from official members of the guild and which weren't so official, but we've seen just how black and poisoned their hearts have become so I'm afraid the worries of the resistance members are not without cause.

Wednesday October 13th, 2021 10:29:31 PM

Zazu describes the people we have met who may or may not have been in the Thieves' Guild, starting with ...

Thomho - (Male Halfling). Member of a Guild - likely a Thieves Guild. Killed by the party in a fight while trying to find Myre.
Glumly - (Male Dwarf). Member of a Guild - likely a Thieves Guild.
Crowley - (Male Gnome). Member of a Guild - likely a Thieves Guild.
Thwarg - (Male Half-Orc). Member of a Guild - likely a Thieves Guild.

And also including the unusual person who was giving out valuable rings. Maybe Zazu remembers the name they gave?

======

Before we leave Karri, maybe we should send word to our friends, especially Goody Wyrran and her coven, and really especially Greenmage Nelly if she is in town. Just to give them an update on our status and to renew our invitation for them to visit.

She then looks to Zazu "The person who gave us those rings said his name was Willis Campion"

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 22/11/21 -- HP: 40/40

Sahabiel listens and occasionally nods as Galen relates the story of how things came to be as bad as they are. Gradually, her expression turns thoughtful, and something like a smile forms on her lips.

Unlike Ash she is not too worried that the guild might already know about the cache. How would they? The message that was to inform the guild of its existence was the one they just belatedly delivered to Galen.

“Ousted, ya say?”, she says slowly.

“Ya have my sympathies, for what little that helps. A few brave souls against an entrenched syndicate like that isn’t a good prospect… Can’t win that heads on, and even if ya managed to cut the head off the snake, the chaos that’d cause would only help if ya were poised and ready with means to move on the power vacuum yerself - else yer just waiting for the next most ruthless member to rise to the top, and nothin’ much would change. At best ya disperse them fer a while, but even temporary anarchy in the criminal underbelly wouldn’t be all good fer the smallfolk. It’d be a disorganized spree of petty, even more risky and desperate, crimes as they try to support ‘emselves and get back to their feet.”

“Now if there were a rival waiting in the wings to take advantage…”

She turns to her comrades and grins. “Any growing settlement is going to evolve one sooner or later anyway, whether we like that or not, so… might I suggest we ourselves plant the seed of a Freedom Landing Thieves’ Guild with the kind of honorable rogues that the Guild here has driven out? I’d invite some people that already have the skills and the level of organization to take control of the shadows back home, before the faction that controls Karri’s can sink any roots in.”

“It’d be a bit of a long game, but we’d be hard pressed to find people more motivated and alert this time about keeping our own lawless elements in line (and galvanize those who work the shadows against our common enemy), than the ones that already know loss from letting their guards down once.”

Sahabiel’s idea is twofold. First, by making allies that will form the core of a new thieves guild with its base safely in Freedom Landing, create an at least moderately honorable template that will absorb and shape its inevitable underbelly and resist the influence of the enemy guild. Second, to work together with these former resistance rogues to run lines back into their opponent’s territory, and cultivate them to passively leech manpower and resources from the Karri Thieves’ Guild by being there to soak up part of its less invested rank and file members every time it suffers a big setback or loses one of its leaders. Of course it will be the business of the party and its various allies to ensure that the Karri Thieves’ Guild does suffer exactly such things. A well established thieves’ guild is too big an enemy to take head on, so she’d erode it instead.

Panzer listens to the others and at first is kinda sad that none of them want to take on the challenge of ousting this more greedy faction to restore the freedom fighters. Then the green lady, Sabaiel, was that her name? So many new faces. She lays out an elaborate plan about bringing the honorable thieves to the Freedom's Landing town. Huh? Who knowingly invites a thieves guild into their town?
Panzer is smart, for a badgerkin. He can read and everything. But smart only goes so far. And long range planning is not his game. Half the time he doesn't know what he is gonna eat for dinner until it is in his mouth. So, thoroughly confused he raises his hand.
" I, ah, I lost ya there. You want to invite the old thieves, the ones with morals, to your town?, But why? I'll admit I'm not the sharpest fork in the washbasin but who wants a thieves guild in their town? I was going to suggest we just go and, um, kill off as many of the bad ones as we can get our paws on and hope that the guild returns to how it was, but now I'm confused. Can you explain more slowly please?"

{ So like I said before Panzer isn't perceptive, in fact he's about as sharp as a bag of hammers. I the player get your point but Panzer needs someone to hold his hand and explain intricate plans like this to him like he is dumb, cuz he kinda is. }

"My good sir, I must confess, much of this conversation is beyond my own grasp, for these people and instances occurred before I met my fine friends. However, the benefit I can see of inviting those with morals into our community, is to build a stronger community, and at some point, regain control of the Guild here and in other locations. At least that would seem prudent, would you like some tea, I found that Mr Galen had some lovely lavender mint stashed in a cupboard."

"Well, with an organization with morals and respect for the people, there may be a little pilfering around the edges, that should be expected by a guild named "The Thieves Guild". But with a ravening pack of out right cut-throats, like the ones who kidnapped our friend and then tried to bully us around, once they are in total control, there will be no one to stop them from just outright murder and mayhem for profit. Most likely, I can foresee them keeping the name "Thieves Guild" but in actuality becoming a true Assassin's Guild. This is something I think I mentioned, just not truly as refined as I just did now though.
Does that clear up the difference Panzer? "

This revelation confirms much of what we suspected about the workings of the thieves guild. I do agree that need to get to that cache before those cut purses fine it, but it's we wish our town to prosper and be safe, then we must help the more honorable faction to clean house.

DM Kathy
Thursday October 14th, 2021 11:01:42 PM

There is a great deal of discussion. Zazu and Ash ask about various Thieves' Guild members they have met. Galen shakes his head. "I think I may have encountered the gnome once or twice," he says. "But I don't know anything about him. Indeed, I didn't even know his name, so if it is the same man, you know more about him than I do." The name "Silken" doesn't ring any bells either. "It's clearly an alias," he says, "and it could belong to just about anybody." The name Willis Campion gets a better result, however. "Human fellow, right?" Galen says. "Yes, he has something to do with the Council. He's not a Councillor, but I think he works for one of them? Or perhaps for the Council itself; I'm not sure."

Sol and Lothlo have no good opinion of the current Guild.

Sahabiel suggests inviting the rogues of the former resistance to Freedom's Landing. Panzer has to have the concept explained to him, and isn't sure he agrees. Nightingale and Beech are inclined to support the plan. Galen frowns. "Are you sure?" he says. "Such an action may not keep the rogues safe; it may instead put your town in greater danger. The Thieves' Guild is sure to notice such a move. Your hearts are in the right place, but I'm not sure this plan is wise."

Ash (RobC) -- AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 12 -- HP 41/41

Ash is in agreement with Panzer and Galen. "Inviting a Thieves Guild to our settlement would be courting danger. It's good to have allies of course, but allowing them to establish a base in the town is just too much and too soon. We'd be inviting trouble from all sorts of the enemies of the guild. Calling themselves an Assassins Guild would be just as bad!"
Highlight to display spoiler: {Pretty sure Assassins are considered Evil in the Wold}

"Only a small fraction of our town are trained fighters and we have next to no defences. We're just getting by right now by not drawing too much attention to ourselves. Setting up an opposing guild could paint a big target on us and force them to wipe us out before we became a bigger threat."

Ash turns her attention back to the matter at hand. "I suppose it's something we can work through later. As Zazu said, let's go find the cache and see what's left before anyone else does. We might get lucky"

( OOC although the question seemed to be directed to Sahabiel, I kind of feel that enough replies were written to Panzer’s question since, that I do not need to rehash that? Skipping ahead to the point raised the DM post, since this is already kind of a long post.)

Sahabiel nods, gravely. “I understand yer concern. And I do not disagree that this whole idea is fraught with risks. But going from what I am given ta understand, it still makes sense. Fer one, fer as long as I’ve known them my companions have been talking about this Thieves Guild in a way that makes it already sound as if we should prepare fer them to make a move against Freedom Landing anyway, because of their history with ‘em. Second, ‘tis true that if we don’t involve ourselves in who controls Freedom Landing’s shadows, they[i] surely will. That much isn’t a question of provoking ‘em or not, just one where we can have a line of defense in place, or not. And third, for the defensive part at least… they do not need to know, now do they? The ousted too are rogues and information dealers forged under oppression past and present. That they managed to survive under the Reign of the Tyrant suggests they know how to hide their traces. I [i]should hope they will remember how ta smuggle themselves out of town without leaving any the wiser o’ where they went or why ‘n when. Not as if we’ll be publicly announcing we’re helping a rival guild set up or where it’s based.”

“All that said, that’s all from the assumption that the Thieves Guild as it is, is too big and in control fer any to take on. Should this prove false, then of course I too might prefer a path less reliant on subterfuge and with more immediate results. But to plan fer that, we’d need to know a lot of things we just don’t right now, starting with a who’s even who. Most dangerous fight is where ya don’t know yer enemy and ya don’t know yer allies, so getting in touch with a few surviving ousted members, and the contact this Willis Campion hinted at, sounds like it ought ta be step one fer both my idea and most alternatives – we can still change plans as we get more of the picture, hm?”

Plans on how to deal with the threat of the Thieves Guild aside, Sahabiel agrees with Ash and Zazu on all more immediate issues. Although a first tentative step can be taken on other opportunities, they came to this town for supplies, and acquiring those -or at least those that certainly would not have a chance of also being in a years old hidden cache- and start moving them back to Freedom Landing is to be the main business of the day. There is only so much they can do right now.

"Mister Galen, (*) Lamruil, if ya are still know how to contact the ousted, would ya be willing to sound out if any'd be prepared to get in touch with us?"

Before any of that comes to anything, they have supplies to shop for, a cache to find, and- she feels her sadly empty stomach -didn't someone mention vendors of tasty skewers in this town? It is not that she can not survive on foraging and her own simple cooking, but.. she feels she could eat a half dozen skewers right now.

(*) Since being introduced as 'an elf', Lamruil character has never been described as one gender or another, so I'm not sure what appellation to use.

Zazu, a wizard and bookcrafter who always has paper and ink on hand, writes notes to the Council, to Goody Wyrran, and to Greenmage Nelly. The notes include a summary of recent events, including the death of Thomho and suspicions about the Guild of Thieves -- but NO mention of Galen and Lamruil and company, since it really has nothing to do with Freedom's Landing. But Zazu DOES extend an invitation to Wyrran and Nelly to come visit, mentioning in the note to Nelly that her guidance in regard to sustainable agriculture would be most welcome. [OOC: She promised to come help us in the past, but Zazu would not be so rude as to explicitly remind her of that promise.]

Zazu leaves the dwelling to deliver the notes, then comes back to meet the party.

Ash is none too keen on inviting rogues to Freedom's Landing, and suggests just finding the cache instead. Nightingale is also interested to see what the cache holds.

Beech formally extends an invitation to Panzer and Sol to come to Freedom's Landing.

Sahabiel asks Galen and Lamruil whether they could approach the ousted rogues and ask if they were interested in talking to you. "I can do that, yes," Galen replies. [OOC: Lamruil is a male elf wizard, but since his sole narrative purpose was to bring Sol into the group, I haven't really fleshed him out.]

Naithi asks for information on the current Thieves' Guild. "Tricky," Galen replies, "but I will do what I can. Here, you'd better take this." He returns to the box and pulls out another codebook, this one considerably less battered. "If I'm going to send you messages about the Guild," he explains, "I want to do it in code. This can help us communicate safely." He holds out the codebook to whichever of you takes it.

Lothlo advises keeping your heads down, and Galen heartily agrees.

Zazu wonders where you're staying tonight. "Yes," Galen says. "Yes, I hate to be a poor host, but you can't stay here. You'll want to find an inn or guesthouse. Lamruil can guide you to one if you need it. And," he says as Zazu begins pulling out paper and ink, "perhaps you'd better write your notes from there as well. Your friends will be able to reply to you there."

Galen jots down a quick description of where the cache is and hands it to you. He goes to the door and looks out. "No spies, I think. Quickly now. Go find your inn, then return to your town and find the cache. I'll be in touch."

A lone practitioner who might be willing to cast spells as a service? Zazu plans soon to be in need of some professional-grade casting.

Then Zazu joins the party in thanking Galen (and Lamruil) again for his help, for his introduction to these new comrades, and for the info about the cache. He is always welcome to come visit.

At the Elder Treant Inn, Zazu finishes his notes and then goes about town to deliver them.

That night, sure, we'll keep our usual watches, although the city is a pretty safe place. Still, does not hurt to be cautious.

Seeing friends studying the code book, Zazu asks, "I thought the purpose of a code book is to create coded messages and to decipher messages found in the same code, right? And we've already deciphered the coded message the poor dead elf was carrying, right? So what is it you guys are looking for?"

Zazu places a order with the staff for the morning of lots of bacon, fried eggs, and pumpkin spice bread. [OOC: Posting this just before breakfast today!] And carrots and lettuce lots of similar rabbit fare for Boyo, please. And for Camalayas too of course.

If games are played at the inn to pass the evening, she will avoid cards, dice, or darts, but she is happy to test her strength in some friendly arm wrestling.

(OOC: She does not bet money on matches, beyond buying a winning opponent a drink, but just does it for fun and to socialize with the locals and with other travelers staying at the inn.)

I agree with the Elder Treant Inn, not only is the food amazing, but since that's the only place we've stayed before it's the best choice if we are trying to not raise any eyebrows. But mostly the food and soft beds, I've been dreaming of those since we camped out last night.

As you depart, Nightingale offers up a quick prayer to Maab for Galen's continued safety. Zazu thanks Galen for his hospitality and asks about spellcasting services. You learn that there is a Star Mages Guild here, albeit a very small branch.

Ash reminds you that you know of a good place to stay, and leads the way to the Elder Treant Inn. She speaks well of the food there, which piques the interest of Sahabiel, Sol, and Beech. Lothlo is more interested in soft beds.

It is not yet noon when you arrive at the inn, so you have your choice of places to sit. The place is just starting to fill up for the noonday meal. Today's specials are rabbit stew and roasted eggplant (that is, rabbit stew is one option and roasted eggplant is another option). Other meals are also available as the inn prides itself on the quality and variety of the food it offers.

As you wait for your meals, Zazu begins writing his notes as Sahabiel studies the codebook. It is broken into two sections: one for encoding messages and one for decoding them. The decoding section lists codewords alphabetically; the encoding section is organized by topic and the kind of phrases likely to be needed. For example, there is a section for codes describing troop movements, another for warnings of spies and traps, and so on.

Your food arrives, and it is all delicious. The innkeep circulates through the room, checking to be sure his guests are happy. "I've seen you folks before, haven't I?" he says as he approaches your table. "Welcome back! Is everything to your satisfaction?"

Zazu shudders at the mention of rabbit stew and covers Boyo's ears. "The eggplant sounds delicious, thank you."

"Sure, Mister Innkeeper, we love your place! We're the people setting up the new village at Freedom's Landing, and this is our favorite place to stay in Karri."

The wizard finishes scribing notes to the Council, the witch, and the greenmage, and then heads out to deliver them. Zazu makes sure that everybody knows about it, and invites anyone who is inclined. "Note, I do not intend to impose on our important friends. Just drop off the note, maybe with a secretary or apprentice, or slip it under a door, and then skeedaddle back here."

[OOC: Sorry for jumping the gun and posting too many actions in my last post. You did exactly right, kindly DM Kathy, in putting the brakes on a bit. Thanks!]

(OOC: I think our names may have been mixed up, because Sahabiel somehow got credited for Ash’s interest in the codebook?)

Over a lunch of roasted eggplant, Sahabiel chats about this and that with the party and its new members, while avoiding mention of thieves guilds, cache, or anything else that ought to not be overheard by wandering ears. She does however touch on the matter of her deciding to stay around the new town, over which she approaches those of her companions that hold some sway as de-facto leaders in the community… “If ya will forgive me a selfish request when ya ‘ave not known me all that long, but if I’m to live in Freedom Landing, I am going to need a place to stay. With the whole town at best being under construction, would ya spare me a plot of land to set up fer myself on? Preferably on the edge of town and facing the Culverwood - that’s both fer me and because I’ve got Kohlrabi that is going to want open space around to graze, ‘n stretch her legs, too.”

Sahabiel volunteers to go with Zazu on their message delivery round, as it would get her around to see more of Karri beyond the inn and the market area.

At lunch, Sahabiel asks about a place in Freedom's Landing for herself and Kohlrabi. Nobody answers her directly, but it shouldn't be a problem. There's plenty of room.

Sol orders drinks for the table, eager to watch games being played. This being the noon hour, there aren't many. A couple of old elf men are playing a dominoes-like game, but most people seem eager to finish their meals and get on with their days. Games seem to be more of an evening thing.

Zazu finishes his notes and sets off to deliver them, accompanied by Panzer and Ash. None of you notice anyone paying particular attention to your group.

Beech sets out to find some tools for cooking and baking. You don't find anything on a cart, but you do find a leather carrying case containing a saucepan, a frying pan, two mixing bowls, and three wooden spoons. It costs 50 gold. [OOC: This can count as a masterwork cooking/baking tool. You guys already have a traveling menagerie; I do not want to add a handcart to everything else. :) ]

Lothlo sets out to learn more about the Thieves' Guild. You learn that a group of upstart adventurers (that would be you guys) has seriously ruffled the feathers of the Thieves' Guild, and the Guild does not seem ready to let bygones be bygones. Nobody has heard anything about people pretending to be in the Guild when they really aren't, but, as several people remind you, you can't trust rogues.

Nightingale asks whether there is anyone to speak to about trade routes to Freedom's Landing. There is a small merchant's guild, and there is also the Council, but to be perfectly honest your DM hasn't prepared anything about trade and commerce and is terrible at improv, so could we maybe postpone that?

You all wander back to the Elder Treant after your various errands are accomplished. You find that you can get a suite of rooms for 10 gold for the night, or traditional rooms for 2 gold per room.

I doubt that the thieve's guild would do anything serious to us in the actual city, but they are still mad at us and apparently are fond of sending messages, so keeping watch wouldn't be a bad idea. I can take any watch. I'm sure all the rooms are great, but we should probably take whatever room would be the safest.

DM Kathy
Wednesday October 20th, 2021 10:13:32 PM

Naithi proposes keeping a watch.

Nightingale would like her own room.

Sahabiel, Panzer, and Beech express a preference for the suite.

Ash and Sol have no strong preference.

Lothlo wants whatever option is the safest.

The innkeep takes you up and shows you the suite, in hopes it will help you make up your mind. The door to the suite opens into a common area, with a large table, comfortable chairs, and a small fireplace. Four more rooms open onto the common room. Three of these are bedrooms; the fourth is an elven-style rest chamber. Instead of beds, the rest chamber has two elven couches (the kind humans sometimes call fainting couches). Elves do not sleep, and many of them prefer to recline on these couches to enter their trance. It would also be possible to sleep on a couch, if a person wanted to. One of the remaining bedrooms has a large bed, suitable for a large person or two medium-sized people. One bedroom has three medium-sized beds; the other has two small beds and one medium-sized bed.

The suite is 10 gold, and your DM is going to assume that at least some of you will be staying here. There's room for everyone, and whoever is on watch can sit up in the common room. Nightingale can still have a room for herself, separate from the suite, she can get one, though of course the watch won't be able to cover it very well. Regardless of what she chooses for a room, a female employee escorts her downstairs to a bathing-chamber for a bath.

Shortly before dinnertime, there is a knock on the main door of the suite. When you open the door, you see Willis Campion, the human man who gave you the platinum rings. He smiles, bows, and wishes you a good afternoon.

And before everybody gets all paranoid, recall that Zazu sent a message to the Council. Recall, too, that Galen had told you that Campion worked for the Council, or possibly one of the Council members.

"I just thought I'd drop by and see how you are faring. Have you had any more trouble with the Thieves' Guild?"

"Come in, have some dinner. The food here is very good. We can chat over a meal. You can catch us up on the latest capital news, and we can tell you of our most recent adventures."

Later, at dinner, Zazu recounts the latest on the Thieves' Guild. "We suspect there are factions, maybe one that is more focused on crime, another that hearkens back to the more honorable days when the Guild tried to resist Parnoth."

The rogue also describes the mysterious person the party met, who may or may not have been an agent of the Guild, and whose nom de guerre escapes me, Cayzle, though Zazu recalls it.

Four bedrooms, and as many watch groups. For the sake of not waking people across different rooms when the watch changes, Sahabiel believes the sensible thing is to share rooms along the same lines as the schedule, which would see her share the room with Sol and Beech – a grouping she has no issues with as long as nobody snores.

It does not take long though to see that the beds are not divided over the rooms in the way they would be needed, but if nothing else Sahabiel is ready to team up with another strong party member (like Panzer) to move some furniture between rooms!

Nightingale chooses to stay in the suite with the group.

Panzer and Sahabiel try to organize a watch roster. Sahabiel tries to match sleeping chambers with watch groups, but the configurations are wrong. She wants to move furniture. Or, you know, those coming on and off watch could just be quiet about it.

Zazu greets Campion and asks him to join you for a meal. He accepts. "I did decide to stop by because of the letter," he confirms. "I have no specific business, but I wanted to look in and see how everyone was doing."

Zazu catches him up on your findings about the "old" and "new" Thieves' Guild. Campion seems interested. (There is no need to ask him about Silken, if that's the person you mean, since you encountered Campion after encountering Silken and have already spoken to him about her.)

Lothlo asks whether the Guild does anything but cause trouble. "They have become emboldened of late," Campion agrees. "They seem to be protected by someone of importance, but we're not sure who it is."

Ash asks if he's ready to reveal who his benefactor is. "Not at the present time," he says with a smile.

You eat your supper in your suite--a couple of you have to go downstairs and arrange this, but it is easy enough to do. When the meal is finished, Campion thanks you and departs.

You set your watches, but your rest is undisturbed. In the morning, you are able to eat a quiet breakfast and depart (unless people have things to do before you leave).
