Hello, is there anybody in there, just nod if you can hear me. (DM Mark) MAP Thursday September 30th, 2021 6:36:31 PM Elyas moves into the room. He looks carefully to try to tell if the centaurs in the mirrors are saying anything. Then he touches one of the mirrors to try to identify the magics involved. (This part requires three rounds to identify an item, so we’ll reveal that in a subsequent post.) Mak moves in, and is careful he is not reflected in any of the three central mirrors. He is, of course, reflected in the mirrors on the walls - as is everyone else. He fills his magical mug and enjoys some refreshment Rolth is relieved to see the trapped centaurs. He asks a number of questions. Kiwina searches the images for clues to their identities. Tsak stays where he is back in the corridor, wary of the mirrored room. Wil searches the room for exits or traps. Falco has a bad feeling about this place and readies to dispel any magical effects.
Those nearby can see their own reflection in these three central mirrors, but in each there is a different centaur in the mirrors’ reflection as well. Each is different and independent of the others, and seem to see the Petals and the other centaurs’ images.
Rolth can tell that the images of the centaurs do not seem to be able to hear him, but they can read what he writes. They do not pull out any writing implements or such. The central figure reacts with both relief and worry at the mention of Pelonius. All three hold weapons in their hands.
Kiwina is able to discern these three are likely Pholus, Barbale and Timapius. They look haggard and tired. All are also injured, and while the wounds look fairly fresh they do not seem to be bleeding or festering.
With Elyas careful eye and Linguistics skill, he can confirm the identities of these three. They are pleading for help, to get them out of the mirrors, though they know not how. Elyas can see that Pholus mouths a warning to not touch that pile of gold. They ask about one centaur in particular that seems to have run off, but Elays can’t quite make out the name - it starts with a B though.
Left unattended, the mirrored doors slowly swing shut, leaving Tsak, Esmerelda, and Falco in a darkened hallway.

Rolth continues to write and communicate, glad that Elyas can get more in response than just a head nod! He next writes "Brygape? He escaped. Did he betray you or just scamper off?"
To the party, Roth wonders aloud, "Conjuration, eh, I wonder if these things can teleport folks? Perhaps one keyed to each of the Taur Isles? That would make sense here on Bridge Island, and greatly aid our quest to reunite the taurs. How do we figure this out? Elyas, do you have any arcane lore that might reveal more about the nature of these things and how to make them work for us--and free these poor taurs?"
Rolth will try to assist any conjecture that Elyas makes.

I mean, if he intends this to be a lesson, then they should be able to learn from it. Are they able to communicate with each other, and what have they tried so far to escape on their own. working together?"
Kiwina is full of questions. Hopefully ones that let them find answers.

They say nt to touch the gold, not that we were going to. one of them ran off, maybe the one we saw dead in the golem room?
it's going to take me a little while to figure out these mirrors, maybe i can find a clue as to how they work. give me a minute before trying anything just yet.
with that, Elyas will focus entirely on trying to figure out the mechanics of this mirror rather than splitting his focus on talking to the petals or reading lips.

Mirror, Mirror... (DM Dan) MAP Friday October 1st, 2021 5:05:02 PM Tsak Rezar moves up to the now closed door. Elyas continues focussing on the mirrors, trying to learn all he can before letting anyone else touch them. Rolth Niheow continues talking with the Taur in the mirrors, and tries to help Elyas. Kiwina rattles off lots of questions aimed at the Taur in the mirrors. Falco Ambersier opens the doors Mak Wil searches around the room.
Falco opens the doors to reveal the room with the rest of the Petals in it. Thankfully it seems the doors are just designed to close naturally without any input, and nothing malicious appears to be going on with them.
Elyas is still trying to figure out some of the secrets of the mirrors, he already has a lot of information, but he knows there is yet a little more to learn...
The Taur in the mirrors nod when Brygape is written down, but they have no real way to communicate long concepts other than your ability to lipread, however, now you can focus on it you get the gist of things.
Brygape seems to have run, partly out of cowardice and partly because he could do nothing to help them, so in some ways they are thankful he managed to get away since he brought you here to help.
They just know the objects in the middle are cursed and when Barnable touched the wine bottle, they were all sucked in. They are kept well enough, not hungry or thirsty. Barnable and Timapius are sullen about their greed, and Pelonius laments his folly of bringing others here.

Kiwina trusts that there is a way to get people out of the mirrors, given that this is supposed to be a test set by Domi. He points out that it might improve communications if one of the Petals went into the mirrors -- but he doesn't know whether that would add the Petal to the centaur in the mirror or replace the centaur already in that mirror with the Petal. And if it replaces them, he doesn't know if they would reappear out here or go somewhere else.
Having offered these thoughts, Kiwina lets Elyas work on figuring out how the mirrors work. He, himself, walks around inspecting the mirrors, paying most of his attention to their frames. He'll even try looking at the center mirrors in the mirrors on the wall to see if they look different that way. (Perception = 29, knowledge (religion) = 25)

Elyas continues to study the mirrors, welcoming help from the other petals who may have insight to share. He is hoping to find some information about what spells are in pla here to maybe come up with a plan to unravel them.
without knowing more the options available all seem risky. they could do as Kiwina suggests and try to get one of their own sucked into a mirror, but they have no way of knowing which mirror they would end up in or if they may end up in a new mirror somehow.
they could try dispelling the magic, but without knowing what he was counteracting that was difficult and may not even work.
they could smash a mirror, but that might just cut off the prisoner forever. or make an explosion...

Elyas considers what the others suggest.
I looked earlier for a sign that the mirrors had previously been pivoted, and didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean they can't be. certainly worth trying things like that that don't directly damage the mirrors. we can try rotating one of these, or even better, does anyone have a mirror on them we could use?
actually, two of the mirrors are already facing each other. Elyas looks across into the eastern mirror. does it reflect the image in the western mirror as would be expected, or is there some additional weirdness there?
these mirrors are certainly cursed. Unfortunately that is all my investigation has revealed to me. I do believe we could potentially break the curse with dispel magic or remove curse, but those spells don't always work, and i can only cast two dispels at the most today. let's try a few of the other ideas we've had before i start trying to directly fight the curses
[ooc: does anyone else have access to either of those spells?]
Mirror, Mirror... (DM Dan) MAP Tuesday October 5th, 2021 7:23:45 PM Tsak Rezar suggests trying to reach out to the reflection and grab it. Elyas looks at the mirrors, investigating them. Rolth Niheow prays in earnest to have the minotaur's freed. Kiwina draws your attention to the various marks of the Mirrors. Falco Ambersier stays out the way, watching the others problem solve. Mak suggests creating an infinity mirror. Wil looks for any suggestion that the mirrors can be freely moved.
Rolth gets a sense of peace coming over him, however, Domi has not seen fit to release the prisoners yet. Rolth attempts the suggestion of Tsak, and when his hand reaches out to touch one of those trapped in the mirrors, while his hand doesn't go through and get them, it does feel warm, as if someone already had their hand on there, and for lack of a better word it feels soft. No the glass, that's as hard as unyielding as it ever was, but something about it feels soft.
The mirrors themselves can easily be moved if you want to do so, and the two mirrors opposite on another reflect everything as you would expect (including the other mirror) except those trapped. They only appear in the mirror they are trapped in, and only in the first version (so they don't appear in reflections of the mirror at all, even in ones they logically would appear in)

Rolth wonders whether these could be creatures as well as mirrors, given their warmth and softness. He further wonders whether we are meant to try to communicate with the mirrors themselves. He gives it a go, starting with the mirror containing Pholus, "Mirror so fair and wise, we come in peace, in the name of Domi. Rolth's impassioned plea falls on deaf ears. Or more accurately, no ears. The mirrors do not appear to be alive or have any degree of intelligence, and certainly appear for all intents and purposes to be simple mirrors.
Mak's coin strikes the mirror with a high pitched clink, then bounces off, exactly as you'd expect a mirror to do.
In short order, all three mirrors are moved to face away from the centre, but nothing changes that you can see, those trapped are still trapped, and the mirrors continue to reflect anything that is in front of them, as normal mirrors do.
However, while you are all arranging and preparing the mirrors, Tsak and Falco hear footsteps from behind, not anything heavy or leading them to believe anything dangerous, but moving in your direction, and without more than a moments delay, you all hear the footsteps as Tsak and Falco look over their shoulders to see someone round the corner...

When he saw the minotaur and Roth's subsequent fawning over him Mak smiled at his friends enthusiasm in his quest. Yes, Mak was not as committed to the quest as perhaps Kiwina and Rolth were, but he didn't have much skin in the game. As far as the nobleman was concerned these groups should have been getting on long before now.
So without much more thought about it, Mak retrieved his coin and after a moment of thought, placed it in the pile at the center of the mirrors...

Elyas laughs at Rolth's enthusiasm. A new person wanders in, and within moments you declare them a new member fo the Eight Petal Rose? What if he doesn't want to join us?
to the newcomer Imod didn't happen to tell you how you needed to help us did he? like specifically how to break a bunch of taurs out of a mirror dimension prison?
Elyas doesn't let the newcomer distract him for long, and decides it's time to at least see how the mirrors react to a bit of magic of his own. He targets the mirror containing Pholus first with Dispel Magic. the spell resists strongly, but Elyas uses the inspiration of his friends and maybe a bit of desperation and pushes harder against the curse.

You all look at the newcomer with varying degrees of suspicion, while Elyas casts his spell on one of the mirrors. Looking closely at the mirror as the spell takes effect, there is almost like a sheen of light that runs across it, and it almost looks like the glass has turned to water, that is standing up straight. They, relieved and relaxed, fall to their knees and sit down.
Just as they do, and the Petals take a breath, Son Imod and Rolth hear the sound of glass scraping on glass, and out of each of the mirrors steps a Golem, made entirely of clear glass, they are amongst the Petals and the recent prisoners.
They each strike out at one of the Petals, Wil takes 22 damage, Kiwina takes 19, and Rolth takes 20.
As the glass cuts and slashes at the Petals, it causes the wounds inflicted to bleed, each of you must take a further 1d8 at the beginning of your turns.
((Just for clarification, you have not had a chance to rest yet, as Tsak cast his Dispel Magic before you took a long rest, so no spell slots restored nor hit points have been gained))

He reached into his quiver and pulled out two arrows which he held in three fingers as he threaded them in his bow, aimed, and fired. Elyas finds himself in a really bad spot with golems on all sides.
experience with the other golems indicates that magic isn't going to affect them, but that doesn't keep spell from helping the petals!
Everyone get as close as you can! I'll speed things up!
Elyas will hold as long as he can to get more allies in the spell range
Elyas concentrates on keeping the mirror between him and the closest golem and casts a spell, giving all of his allies that are close enough Haste [concentration check to cast defensively, DC 21 = 30]
Elyas tries to recall anything that could help fighting golems made of glass. sometimes certain spells work on golems, maybe he can figure out what the limits of their resistance are. knowledge arcana = 34
[OOC: we're a bit spread out for this to be effective! everyone who is affected by a haste spell needs to be within 30ft of everyone else who is in the spell at the time of casting. if we were in initiative order i would delay until after the rest of the team went to get more people in. so we won't be getting the bonuses on attacks this round, but hopefully we can get almost everyone sped up for next round.]

Elyas can see that the mirrors are large heavy things, but they are free standing and can be moved and carried.

Falco is satisfied with the battle and offers to heal Rolth. Kiwina stabs the golem breaking off some bits. Mak shoots the golem 4 times, and causes a hole exploding in a shower of glass. Tsak keeps an eye on his centaur wards. He notices all the centaurs look pretty gaunt and haggard, but Pholus looks much worse than the other two. Wil heals Kiwina and encourages his ape. It bites into a glassy leg and the whole golem looses integrity as it collapses into a pile of glass shards.
The Ape waves his arms in the air and screams with glee as the wolf finally kills the thing.
Except for the excited ape, things grow quiet. Combat appears to have ended. There are several piles of glass where each golem collapsed. "Hey Apey.. good job trying buddy. Too bad I'm thinking of using you guys less. It's just not going to work. Don't worry, it's not you.. it's me." Wil walked up to his Summoned ape to congratulate it. "I'm thinking more magic bow action so I can get a couple more licks in. If I do that then I may have to talk to these guys more." He says loudly as if having a conversation. "I should talk more to real people. I agree, Mom. I know.. I'm a bit beat up myself. I'll be ok. They are my friend. I have to get them first."

Kicking Glass! (DM Mark) MAP Tuesday October 26th, 2021 7:35:09 PM Kiwina roots around in one of the glass piles with his spear. He uncovers a large, rough gemstone. It’s still glowing, but the glow is slowly fading. Rolth urges caution dealing with the pile of loot. He suggests gathering everyone for some group healing. Then he ends his own fatigue. Son Imod heals himself. Tsak suggests the centaurs and others return to the mirrored room. Falco urges everyone to gather up, and once they have he will channel energy to heal all for 7 and 17 points. (You may want to roll each d6 separately next time, as you can reroll 1’s.) Mak pokes through the remaining piles of glass with his sword, and he also uncovers two large, rough gemstones. The glow on these seems to be fading as well. Elyas casts Detect Magic on the creature’s remains. Wil tells his ape he did well, which earns him a puzzled look. He heals Kiwina for 25 points.
As the centaurs return to the room, they are glad for the healing. They had some wounds, and the healing fixed those, but they still look a bit gaunt and haggard.
Pholus says, ”Thank...thank you for saving us. I am in your debt - we all are. Use care with that treasure. It was Timapius touch of the stuff that trapped us in those mirrors.” He casts a sidelong glance at the other male centaur who has a guilty look. ”It’s hard to blame him though, with a bottle of blue wine on top. Still, Domi saw to our rescue through you. He said someone would come. Who are you, and how did you come to this place?”
Even as he speaks, Pholus puts an unsteady hand on Barbale to hold himself up. Probably more of a gesture really, because it’s hard to think something as large and sturdy as a centaur could be held up by just a hand on another.
Elays senses Conjuration magic along with Evocation when looking at the piles of glass.

More generally, I believe that Domi leads us to reunify the Taurs and return us all to noble status. And perhaps again we have made some strides in that direction today. Imod told me in my dream that he was losing patience with his Children and the time has come that they or we put aside our petty differences. He asked me if I would humble myself to seek a good beyond that which benefits minotaurs and told me to seek out Nyloth and have him take me to the Metal Door. Imod blessed my path to this chamber. I understand the way was difficult for the rest of the Petals but I was able to catch up without incident. "We are the Eight Petaled Rose, champions of the Taurnament, favored of Hollyhocks." (DM Mark) MAP d20=16 ; Wednesday October 27th, 2021 8:14:05 PM Rolth explains who the Petals are and how they came to be here. He uses his calming touch on the Centaurs, and they do seem less fatigued. Kiwina adds some detail to Rolth’s story. Tsak leaves the room and watches in the corridor for trouble. Son Imod relates how he arrived here, and mentions Imod’s impatience with strife between the Taurs. Falco makes sure no one is injured. Wil channels some more healing (12 points), and wonders aloud why there would be strife among the Taurs. Elyas gingerly picks up one of the long, rough crystals. Even as he holds it the glow fades from all of them completely. He is unable to divining the properties of the thing, though he knows they are imbued with magic still.
Eventhough Rolth’s calming touch and Wil’s healing has a benefit, still these three centaurs remain somewhat less than they should be.
It is clear that the other two centaurs defer to Pholus. At the mention of Pelonius, Pholus tired eyes sofen. ”Ah yes, the champions of the Taurnament. Hollyhocks mentioned you then, and has several times since. So it does not surprise me that Domi would choose you to visit my daughter and seek out rescue. I deeply regret that three, perhaps four of our group perished. Tell me, did you by chance hear of Brygape? He was alive when we became trapped.
“Long has there been strife between the Taur races. I would like to say it was just our competitive spirit, but alas it has become something darker. I sought this place in response to dreams from Domi. My intent was to seek wisdom in who should succeed me. But Domi had other ends in mind. There were lessons here that we needed to heed, lessons written on the walls of this place.” He coughs a phlegmy cough that causes looks of concern from Barbale and Timapius, but he continues.
“During my time trapped in the mirror, Domi spoke to me. He has told me what I must do among the centaurs. But more importantly, he has given these three mirrors with a stern message for all the Taurs. I need to bring these mirrors back, and it looks like I will need your help with that. I think with the mirrors out of this room, that the treasure there may be safely touched. We should drink the wine together to celebrate what Domi has done through you, but the treasure there should be yours as a reward.” He has another fit of coughing.
As he speaks, his voice echoes in this place, and reflections of all of you abound from all the mirrors lining the walls.

"We are the Eight Petaled Rose, champions of the Taurnament, favored of Hollyhocks." (DM Mark) MAP Thursday October 28th, 2021 9:15:29 PM Wil takes a look at the mirrors to gauge their size and portability. Rolth says he is willing to take the mirrors from here. He asks what Pholus has learned from this place. He says that Brygape did escape and is still alive. (As I recall, Brygape threatened the captain of The Pounding Fury with losing his ship if he did not take Brygape back to Centaur Isle. Brygape was killed in the pirate attack. The Pounding Fury was badly damaged and you towed her back to Bridge Island where they intended to effect repairs.) Son Imod is worried about Pholus, but eager to help with taking the mirrors from here as is Kiwina. Elyas suggests some more magical options after some rest. Mak listens. Falco is interested in the treasure, though he thinks he cannot be much help with the mirrors.
Examination of the mirrors shows them to be about 7’ tall and nearly 3’ wide. They seem to weigh over 100 pounds. Both the frame and the tilting stand that holds them up is very sturdy and well made. They have a solid wood backing and the border of each is carved differently, one depicts liontaurs, another has a border of centaurs, and the third shows minotaurs. In the middle of these mirrors is a large bottle of blue wine surrounded by a pile of gold and gems.
Pholus replies, ”What have we learned here? Well, it seems the words of the prophets are written on the stoneway walls and underground halls.
“Two are stronger than one, and a cord of many strands is not easily broken.” “Might and magic are often mistaken as the path to power, when they usually only lead to death.” “False visions can be your downfall.” “Music can soothe the soul. The music of the sphere can do more.” “This is the beginning of wisdom - that communication and understanding leads to peace and cooperation.”
“Long did I contemplate these while trapped in the mirror. Some I think are a simple warning about the room, and some a clue for how to proceed. But all these things, indeed this very place, are a warning for all Taurs to turn from a path of destruction and pull together as one. And clearly Domi sending you here was to humble us in our hubris. Indeed, perhaps you are here to humble all Taurs. Have you been to the other isles recently, and if so why do you think that is?”
What now?

Rolth shakes his head and admits, ""I think the golem strikes must have addled my wits for a moment. Brygape is actually dead, after having forced the Captain of the Pounding Fury to set out for home. We did defeat the pirates and save the Fury, but not before they killed Brygape. Still, we learned enough of the story to lead us here, so all is not lost! As for your questions, we indeed have been to all the Taur Isles, drawn by missives from taurs, but I think guided by Domi. In each place, we sought, sometimes successfully, to bring taurs together through talk, trade, or taking up arms together. And the leaders of each place have sent us on further quests across the isles, until we arrived here on Bridge Isle, where Kiwina, a minotaur named Sable, and I started out together some time ago. Nyloth has appeared twice at least during this journey, and so must be of some note in this story. What am I leaving out, my fellow Petals?"

"You will always have a place in my Herd." (DM Mark) MAP Friday October 29th, 2021 7:03:25 PM Rolth provides some background info. Kiwina looks at the mirrors, wondering how well they’ll survive being moved. Tsak keeps watch on the silent corridor and listens for the sound of silence. Son Imod suggests the taurs work together to move the mirrors, moving them one at a time. Falco agrees. Mak suggests a wagon. Wil politely suggests tying the mirrors to the centaurs. He wonders about getting past the stone golems. Elyas likes the idea of moving the mirrors carefully.
Pholus’ countenance darkens at the mention of Brygape. ”I will need to speak with Captain Kira about this to better understand. Brygape must’ve fled when we were trapped. Somehow he made it past those stone golems. But the fact that he made no effort to get help or come back to free us is disturbing. It’s a pity he’s dead, but it may have save me the trouble…” The other two centaurs nod in agreement.
”As for these mirrors, they are indeed sacred relics since I believe it is Domi that placed them here. I fear we may not be much help, at this point.” He gestures to himself and Barbale and Timapius. ”I do indeed apprecaite your offers to help. I have a chime that allowed us to bypass the stone golems before, so I hope it will again.”
Barbale adds, ”You are indeed a good and noble group, and you three represent the true ideals of what the Taur races should be. You will always have a place in my Herd.”
”And mine.” adds Timapius.
You can see that, despite your ministrations these three centaurs are indeed weak. It’s almost as if they are recovering from a long illness, or perhaps starvation though none seem famished or thirsty.

Rolth works with his fellow taurs to lift the mirrors one at a time and move them into the hallway. As he does so, he continues talking with Pholus and the others, "I am honored to be called one of your Herd! As for Brygape, it would seem that he was terrified by the whole experience, and thought that you must all be dead. Although I suppose that could just be what he told himself to excuse his lack of steadfastness. In any event, I must warn you that things are tense back on Centaur Isle, with the various factions at each other's throats. We can help you return, of course. In the meantime, let me tell you more of how we came to be here. There is a threat to the Taur Isles, masterminded by some abomination called the Deep. We have traveled the Isles and the seas in between, encountering and defeating its servants. As we have done so, we have had occasions to foster ties between the taurs. We helped a liontaur village on Minotaur Isle deal with violent racists there--although truth be told, we might have been to violent in our defense. The Purple Duke then sent us as emissaries to Liontaur Isle, where again we did a service the local Council of Clans. They in turn sent us to deliver a message to you. By the time we arrived on Centaur Isles, you had already left to come here to Bridge Island. And so here we are. Would you like our assistance in returning to Centaur Isle? And when and where would you like us to deliver the message from the Council of Clans? Here, or upon our return to Centaur Isle?"
