The Tradehouse remained quiet as they shuffled back out into the weather of mid morning. They'd stayed around and helped Akoka as much as they could, but it was going to take some serious organization to straighten things up. It seemed as if those on the ship that fought off the pirates had decided to investigate the contents of the trunks and having found only papers, some clothing, and badges they randomly shoved everything back in, what you saw when you arrived was what happened after those trunks had been opened again. There was going to be a lot of sorting...

Filael waved goodbye as they exited the building the way they came and back out into the rain. By now however the rain had slacked a bit and they could see patches of lightened sky above. Though it was still raining most felt that it would be over soon. Perhaps as they had predicted, by nightfall.

The trip back to the Inn and Tavern was drier as the streets weren't as flooded and the rain was lighter, but they were still dripping wet by the time they arrived inside the warm and inviting Inn. A small cheer went up when Kristoph entered as he was the reigning champion of the games.

No sooner had Kristoph taken a seat when a drink hit the table in front of him. Fortunately it was a watered down table wine suitable for morning consumption. When he looked up he saw Trag over near the window as he raised a glass to Kristoph's health.

Elsewhere in the tavern Blucinda continued her repose in the fireplace. In fact she'd finished her "meal" and was quietly laying upon a glowing red log and sound asleep. The heat from her presence had also subsided as it appeared she only gave off intense heat at certain times. Times like now she was using the fire to maintain her internal temp.

Murmurs in the room as people starting the day late talked.

"Some of the fish in the pond are gone."
"Really? I saw that only one of them was the lucky one."
"Yeah, I think the Crone came out last night and sorted them."
"Cover gone too from what I saw."
"Yeah, That kook trying to rub off all the luck. Who was he anyway?"
"Mayor's father."
"Connections then."
"Yep"
"Big John ever find Waldo last night?"
"Nope, fella said Waldo walked into an alley and vanished. John ran in after him but came out a while later...said he was gone."
"Yep, Waldo is a slippery fella. No tellin' where he is."
"I hear he has a hidey hole at the Abbey."
"Braver man than me then. That place is bad luck."
"Dark fey."
"Dark something."
"Hey Ralphus when's the High Crime coming in?"
"Anyone seen Vesper or Rigul?"
"They was with Akoka when she and them went to explore the Abbey."
"Lots o' people disappearing lately."
"People always be disappearing. Especially around that Abbey, think I saw 'em board the Sea Witch."
"Saw it light up last night."
"The Abbey?"
"Yeah. Those weird flashes that happen before a big storm."
"Yer seein' things."
"Maybe."

Onesimos joins the conversation in the tavern. Mostly he just listens, but occasionally adds his two coppers.

“Akoka says to stay away from the Abbey”
“Those Luck Makers are pretty good, what would be the best place for them to make more Luck for Heranmar?”
“It is good for the community that you are all concerned and taking care of one another in brotherly love.”


In general, he tries to learn more of the community, identify the next adventure, and planting a few ‘idea’ seeds that might mature in its own good time.

Hmm. Joo joo eyeball, Walru Gumboot, Mudee Watters? Now a monkey finger? Snark makes a mental note not to sit in any armchairs.

The little Gnome says to the others, "Hey, who wants to help me carry our stuff down to the Catacombs? I made a note of who wants what, but we'll sell the rest."

Snark will go with whomever wants to accompany him to the Catacombs, entering through Corinn's stall - assuming that Filael shows him how to use the monkey finger port key.

Once that is done, he will return to the rest of the party to distribute the proceeds.

Drotar mutters,

"I don't like this. Spirits in the abbey, and this Waldo fellow has a haunt there himself? This might be connected, might be connected to that hanging tree too. Good thing we already know about the armor, otherwise I mighta thought he was just playing the town for fools."

Looking around at the rest of the party, he says

"We've been gathering information long enough, I'd bet we won't find any more outside the abbey. I say we go today, and get to the bottom of this."

Isaac looks at the scar Akoka shows them a sense of dread in the back of his mind. "Haunted armor and spirits alright. I fear that it might be awhile until I feel ready to tackle such threats but I hope the offer will still stand when I and the others are ready. " He helped with sorting but was mostly carrying stuff around.

As the others go back to the Trade house Isaac departs on his own, Isaac heads up to the local chapel. Even if it was raining he felt it would be rude to the gods to not at least offer thanks to them for the new power that had awakened in him. He heads to the Sanctuary of the Sea chapel.

On the way back Kristoph checks up on the fish, counting them etc.

Back at the inn he grins and raises the tankard to Trag, indicating there were seats near the group if he wishes to join them.

Noting that Blusinda was asleep he looks at her incredulously, after all elementals didn't need sleep? He was beginning to think she was taking the cat-form a little too serious, he grins and throws on an extra log.

"I'm up for checking out the tree and the Abbey, but maybe not adventuring inside just yet"!

He sits listening to the town folk - building a profile of the mysterious Waldo - he can't help but wonder where he may be.

Einar is caught in a day dream and just trails along with the rest. He's been dreaming of what this WLA badge means and how it will make Selene proud when she sees the badge.

After enough time getting nowhere the pair head back downstairs in time to meet the others. Gore'Thum hears the discussion of strange happenings and volunteers the pair to go. Teddy looks alarmed. "What? I don't want to do that, what if whatever it is gets me!?

Gore'Thum gives Teddy a look and the poor beastfolk wilts before the frog's baleful gaze. After a few moments he just mutters, "Fine..." which gets a satisfied nod from his companion.

The Tradehouse...

The heroes made their way to the exit, but Snark turned left just before the door and went to the back wall. There he touched an old lantern hanging next to Corinn's monkey finger. There was a brief flash of light and he was gone. As they made their way back to the Tavern, Drotar suggested they go and look at the abbey. Isaac walks across the street to the Sanctuary of the Sea Chapel.

Issac walks into the six sided building through one of it's sides and standing in the apse opposite the entrance is the priest that is the custodian of the place. Before him are seven supplicants on their knees as he delivers his sermon. Frands, god only wants to hep yoo. He's a loving god and if you roll the dice just right, he'll give you a fortune in the afterlife. The priest continued on for a few minutes more as he proselytized on the benefits of following Wardd..which seemed to include winning at gambling and avoiding evil spirits." The other four apses were shrouded in darkness behind drawn curtains.

Looking Glass Pond...

The pond was on the way back to the Tavern and wasn't a detour at all. They could see that the barricade had been removed from it and that only one fish swam around happily within the crystal clear waters. A couple of townsfolk stood nearby with a heavy cloak pulled over them as they shared the leather shelter in the rain. "The crone came and got all the other ones out. Said that she didn't want the luck to be diluted."

The Bottim Inn and the Blue Cat Tavern...

Benni listens and relates to the others what Akoka told them about the Abbey. It seems Kristophs playful encounter of the night before is still benefiting them all as the townspeople brighten at the sight of him and his companions. Kristoph suggests a little outdoor reconnaissance of the Abbey wouldn't hurt. Einar imagines how happy Selene will be when she sees his new badge. Teddy acts scared when the idea of visiting the abbey is presented. The frog creature appeared to agree that the talking bear could stay back.

Conversation in the Inn's tavern seems to have progressed to the point of shop talk as those patrons in the place start making plans for how they'll get any work done in this rain. As those that have to get out in it depart, the ones that do not gaze wistfully out the windows in silence.

DM James: Remember, no time passes in the Catacombs, so you can keep posting in game while also there.

The journey to the Abbey retraced the path they'd taken often here. Past the pond, the tradehouse, and the chapel. then out the east gate. The rain persisted, but by now it was coming only in mild bursts as the clouds above were breaking up. Far away you could see the sun peeking through the cloud cover as it neared the horizon. In the distance south of you where darker clouds still hovered were traces of lightning spiderwebs in the sky that managed to throw the shadows into stark contrast on occasion.

About a half mile to the south east sat the Abbey upon a hill overlooking the pastures and fields around it. Another half mile lay the tree line of the forest. Even from here you could see darkened windows in the structure light at random with each illumination by the lightning in the distance. Perhaps those rooms had no roof or ceiling, or perhaps there was something more sinister happening in the abbey.

The streets transformed a little as well with the cobblestone affair within the walls of Heranmar becoming a dirt path with two gravel filled ruts for the carts. Puddles abounded along this path and the heroes found walking to one side was both faster and dryer as they followed the path to the Abbey.

They were perhaps a hundred yards distant from the structure when it fully came into sight. It was a two to three story high stone building with two towers, one on the northwest corner and another on the southeast. A low wall surrounded the place and over grown bushes filled the garden around it. The few trees that were in the garden were tall and dead with their dried out and brittle limbs shaking in the turbulent air with each gust. Also with each gust of wind they could hear a low moaning sound coming from within the Abbey.

Isaac keeps quite as the priests do there sermon. He makes a silent prayer to the three gods that watch over him. "To the three I call out and give my humble thanks for you have blessed me with new power and greater strength. Thank you Ffloy, Serenbeth and Wardd." Isaac watches the sermon to it's compleation before speaking to them. "Hello do you have a moment ? I wanted to introduce myself I'm Isaac Harker. One of the Luck Bringers that's what people are starting to call us now right?"

Onesimos clutches the woven Woldian symbol as his courage fails him. ”By Agape and Pragma” he whispers, and washes away the Shaken feelings with a touch. Another touch, and Kristoph can feel the feelings of mutual duty and the concern for others wash away his shakened condition. He will do the same to anyone else affected by Shaken.

”Weapons out my friends, and let us scout the outside of the wall. It may allow us to be better prepared for when we return to cleanse any ill spirits.”

The elf readies his morning star and buckler, and begins to walk around the outside of the walls at about 30’ away from the wall.

In a heartbeat the feeling of dread evaporates and Kristoph has never felt better (the heal puts him on max hp so he literally has never felt this good).

Shaking the last of the jitters off he nods a thanks to Benni and begins looking around (perception:27), staff in hand.

Teddy and Gore'Thum look on the ally, Teddy warrily, Gore'Thum with mild interest. Teddy is not shaken (19 will), but sees the others become so and decides it's time to go. "Nope. Nope nope nope lets go I didn't want to come to the creepy place anyway."

Gore'Thum, totally unaffected (will 19) puts out a thick limb to prevent the ratfolk's retreat. "You will never learn courage if you flee at the first sign of adversity." He says to Teddy. "Go. Look. Learn."

Reluctantly Teddy advances and looks around. He jumps and points as he notices the whatever in the tree (15 perception). "There's something up there." he says nervously. Gore'Thum can't see it (12 perception) but shrugs it off. "Just an object. Look around some more." Teddy nervously casts dancing lights on the scene, illuminating the object in the tree and the ground. He immediately notes someone has pass through recently and shares this information (survival 22). Gore'Thum continues to be oblivious and unafraid (survival 8)

The Abbey...

As they stand within a stone's throw of the Abbey grounds Teddy discovers something in the a tree. He also noticed foot prints on the ground leading to a low spot at the short wall. Teddy makes a few nervous motions and out of nowhere a tight group of lights spring into existence.

For those unprepared it might be a bit jarring to see such happen against the backdrop of the obviously haunted structure, but the small moving lights do serve to illuminate the top of the tree. There fluttering in the wind is a red and white striped winter scarf that's been caught on a limb.

Sanctuary of the Sea Chapel...

"Isaac. I am Mrowlei and friend to Reshakka who curates this place." he pulled back a curtain and Isaac saw a Liontaur stand and turn.

"What is it Mrowlei?" Reshakka asked.

"Isaac here has come to introduce himself. He says he's with the Luck Bringers."

Reshakka moved like an old man and his greying coat was a testament to his age as well. "Come Isaac, sit."

This apse was at the rear of the temple, under an open sky as there was no roof here. The floor in this section was damp and Isaac could see a drain grate to one side. Many of the gifts here sitting next to the wall were wet from the rain, as was the old Liontaur.

"This is the Gift Wall" Reshakka said. "You can place gifts to the gods here."

Isaac could see an inscription on the wall “To the powers of past and future. May they be kind to us.”

"Have you come to worship Serenbeth or Wardd? Those are the only two apses active at the moment. Mrowlei that will be all."

Mrowlei bowed and exited the gift wall apse to leave Reshakka and Isaac alone to talk.

Onesimos nods as Teddy makes some Dancing Lights. ”Very useful to see our fears in the tree were unjustified. I wonder if many of the fears of this place are similarly only the stuff of imagination.”

Benni moves forward to the low place in the wall. He can’t recognize any footprints, but maybe can see where the well developed path leads.

The creepy sounds near the Abbey sends shivers up Einar's spine. His senses are on edge even when shaken... but as soon as he spots movement in the corner he turns around...

"You are right K... K ... Kripstof... let's ru... run"

Einar turns around and in a hustle he tries to get back to the Inn asap but Bennie's Calming Touch brings the Barbarian back to his senses. When he notices it's but a scarf he feels a bit silly though...

As she closes to the tree, a chill of fright washes over her. As she turns to flee, she does notice something something in the tree. Being calmed by Benni brings her back to her senses.

Isaac wasn't sure if he was being honored or just being treated as a normal towns folk but he decided to first pay his respects and leave something to the gods. Isaac takes out 15 gold pieces and lays the coins at the base in three, five coin stacks. He then gets down on one knee feeling the water soaking into his pants leg and says "To the gods that look over me I offer my coin and service. Please continue watching over me Wardd, Serenbeth, and Ffloy." He stands back up and addresses Reshakka " It is my please to meet you sir. I'm Isaac I just arrived here a few days ago. I wanted to come and see the Sea Chapel and ask about some of the strange things I've heard about and seen. If that would be alright."

Drotar grips the haft of his weapon tightly, eyes scanning the horizon quickly as his heart pounds, adrenaline rushing through his body as his every instinct urges him to get out of there. The flash of movement in the trees catches his attention, making him snap his head up and grip one of his throwing knives, but just as he prepares to throw the tree is lit up. Recognizing the scarf after a moment, he says

"We're on the right track. It's his. We can't turn back now.

Swallowing his fear as best he can, he continues on, trying to stop his breath from catching with every sound in the dark.

(OOC: Sorry for not posting for two days, I had a new class start this week and it took more time out of my day than I anticipated. Should be good now though.)

"I don't think we need to do that. Seeing if he's alive is the bigger concern, we can get the scarf later. If it turns out we do need it, its not like its going anywhere."

DM James: Argh, you beat me to the where's Waldo.

The Abbey...

Everyone was on edge, but Benni's calming touch was making the proximity to the Abbey bearable. When they spotted the scarf it was in a tree above the low section of wall where the footprints were. Snark could see that the trail of footprints were more visible under the tree where at least some protection from the rain was such that they hadn't washed away. From that position under the tree he saw that the trail lead to a set of steps leading up to the second floor roof of the Abbey's western wing. There were no doors on this side of the building.

The tree with the scarf in it was about fifteen feet in diameter and twenty feet tall. The trunk was a good two feet in diameter with few handholds until about 9 feet up. Climbing the tree would be a fairly safe endeavor until about fifteen feet up. Afterwards weight, tree structure, and skill would determine if they could reach the errant piece of clothing.

Einar started his climb in the dark and made it up to the smallest limbs in the top of the tree before he faltered and slipped as a branch snapped under his weight. He reached out and caught himself on a branch so he could try again. In the process he scraped his arm on the rough bark.

Meanwhile those on the ground watch the barbarian continue his climb upwards into the tree.

Snark had seen the steps leading to the roof and headed that direction. As he approached he noticed that one of the wooden steps was broken. On the way up he'd have to be careful around that one.

"I see." replied Reshakka. "The veil between the living and the dead and that between what's earthly and fey is thin here. Luck is real and there are those with a strong enough Fey connection to be able to manipulate it. We call them "Gifted". As for the tree and the like, that is the realm of Gargul bleeding over into our world. Haunts, undead, and poltergeists are real here and sometimes all it takes is a traumatic psychic event to trigger one. The Hanging Tree is one such thing. No one here truly understands them, but I have heard of some have been able to banish a haunt. Unfortunately each haunt has it's own conditions before the spirit will rest. In the case of the tree it might be when everyone responsible for that man's hanging is dead, or simply in writing a letter to his wife and family to tell them he's passed. Like I said, each one is different. Most people just avoid the tree at this time of year."

"There are many haunted places in and around Heranmar. There's the Abbey, the Well, the Hanging Tree, oh and the dock devil, and lets not forget the Beast of Thoom. That last one wades through the waters of the bay and drags any ship that doesn't pay the port tax to the bottom. Since it's just a single piece of gold most captains just toss one in before they disembark."

After taking a longer look at the tree Kristoph decides against climbing, then hears the call that Waldo had been found.

He approaches the body and first pokes it with his staff, (assuming it doesn't move) he then examines it (nat 20 = heal:23).

Then he checks the step, looking to see if the step had been tampered with (Perception:13) or any signs that it may have been rigged as a trap.

"If someone knew Waldo came here and had issues with him I suppose they could have tampered with the step"? he says more to himself.

Einar was sooo close. The scarf was just a few feet away and then he got angry and kicked a branch. As the branch split apart from his kick the scarf came loose and floated into his outstretched hand. It was a nice woolen scarf made by a master weaver, that was evident from it's tightly woven red and white threads and heavy feel. He could see why someone might want to keep this. With scarf in hand he looked down and saw the body everyone was standing over, so he descended safely back to the ground to join them.

DM James: Einar can get a +4 Morale bonus once in the next 24 hours.

Drotar followed snark and found the body of poor Waldo even as he stooped over his form he tried to determine cause of death. Other than the obvious Drotar was at a loss.

Meanwhile Snark made his way up the stair. When he arrived at the broken step he could see that rot and time had been the culprit here. The stair must have failed when Waldo set his weight upon it. Snark placed his foot over the stringer that supported the step so as to have a solid surface and advanced to the next step on the stair. Soon he was on the roof.

The roof on this section of the Abbey was made of slate panels fit closely together. Scattered about of the roof were crumbling chimneys with loose bricks rising up in seemingly random places. What was of note here was a circle of bricks with the remnants of a camp fire within. Snark could smell the burned wood as it sat in a shallow puddle within the confined space of the makeshift hearth. Stretched between three chimneys was a canvas tarp that offered a cover of sorts for the fire and the bedroll that that was laying here. A pack with rations, a small axe, and some rope leaned against one of the smoke stacks.

Snark Detect Magic Highlight to display spoiler: {The building itself lit up. There was obviously some magic at work on the structure. After a few long moments of concentration on it he could tell some type of Transmutation magic was at work here. He suspected that the magic was what was keeping the building from completely rotting away, but it was weaker here on the outside than it would be on the inside. }

Tae-Che watched Einar climb, almost fall, and then in a heroic effort kick out and grab the scarf. She was too intently watching him to notice much else.

Meanwhile on the ground Benni moved over to Waldo's body. He too was perplexed about the cause of death other than it looked like a fall. He looked at the body closely for signs of necromancy and though there could be some, he simply wasn't seeing it here in the darkness. Fortunately however Waldo made no moves from his position in the tall grass. He seemed genuinely dead.

Kristoph was right behind Benni and the monk/cleric/elementalist could immediately see what had happened. He reached down and turned the body and felt the limbs.

Kristoph Highlight to display spoiler: {Waldo has been dead for a week. The cold temperatures have preserved the body somewhat and the fear around this place has kept away predators. It looks like Waldo broke his neck in the fall. He can see that Waldo's knee length braids must have wrapped around his neck and caught on the boards above effectively hanging himself. Over the last couple of days with the rain the body grew heavy and he fell here in the tall grass when his hair came loose.

Isaac asked about the other phenomena and Reshakka replied. "This place seems to have something new every month. The well...seems that people sometimes see ghosts near it. No reason why that's so, but everyone in town paints their bucket green if they want to get water from it. The Dock Devil, apparently it'll untie your boat if you don't leave a snack for it in the bow of your vessel. There are hundreds more like that, each with it's own charm you have to use to avoid them. There's also the Snow Queen, you have to burn a candle in your windows during the yule to keep her from visiting a blizzard on you. Similarly there's the Frost Fiend who'll freeze your crops in the fall if you don't slaughter a pig. You see those people walking about with a green feather in their caps? Supposed to keep the rain off them."

When Isaac asked about the hanging tree. "It was a young human girl and someone saw her jump, so no one pushed her if that's what you are getting at. It also seems to be the way people go when they see the tree. More than a few have leapt to their deaths after seeing that tree, but those that see it and live seem to have good fortune for the next year. I think that's rubbish, but I'm just an old liontaur so what do I know."

Isaac listens to Reshakka list off the various superstitions the town had. From the sound of it every thing had some sort of good or bad luck ritual tied to it. Most sounded like folk tales and were either harmless or just weird. It would be hard to tell which sprang from some haunt or creature and which were nonsense and myths. "Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. But two final questions before I leave the person who saw the girl jump who was it? Also if I understand correctly the tree appears with a noose and then the victim puts it on climbs the tree and jumps? I'll need to ask the sheriff about that tree I don't want any more people getting injured by whatever haunts it." After Reshakka answers him he will leave and go to the sheriff's office.

Benni sadly looks at the body of Waldo and considers how the community of Heranmar would react to the team bringing in the body or leaving it and only reporting. Then he shakes his head in self annoyance. The reactions are less important than doing the right thing and that is…

we need two spears or poles and a cloak to fashion a litter and bring back Waldo for proper burial. Einar retrieved his scarf, (good going!), and let us take his mortal remains to his final rest. It should comfort his family.”

Benni has a cloak, and when provided two spears or poles, fashions a litter of the kind healers use in the fields. Cloak on the ground, poles parallel on top at Waldo’s width of shoulders. Then the extra cloak is folded over, first the right then the left. He helps move Waldo on top with another cloak covering the body and puts Waldo’s scarf on top. He body’s weight should keep the makeshift litter together. On the way back, Onesimos takes his turn in carrying one end.

At the Abbey

Overhead the sky was clear as the moon crested the Abbey and threw it's shadow upon the grounds around them. Meanwhile a brisk coastal breeze carried the scent of the salt water to them and the occasional ringing of a bell as a buoy rocked on the waves just off shore. All seemed quiet for the moment.

While the evening progressed and night fell upon the coastal town and it's environs a light from the distant storm flashed in the distance. Around the heroes some frogs decided now was the time to start their song. First it was just one or two calling to each other across the way until others answered the call and joined it. Before long hundreds or thousands of frogs had joined in the cacophony of amphibian glory.

Kristoph explained how he thought Waldo may have died after a quick examination of the body. Einar triumphantly descends with the scarf in hand. It'll need a wash, but it's a solid piece of clothing.

Benni leads the group in the recovery effort of Waldo's body and after some searching they find the appropriate gear to create a litter to deliver the man's body back to town.

In the Sea Chapel...

"I don't recall who it was that saw the girl jump. I do know however that you might be misunderstanding the nature of the apparition. You see when the tree takes on it's ghostly form, it also has the man that was hanged in it there as well. He's swinging in the wind just as he did all those years ago. Some say his eyes glow red as his gaze pierces your soul as he hangs there and judges you. Those that have died later are found at the base of the town wall some distance away...where the wall is closest to the water. The survivors...the "lucky" ones don't seem to recall any compulsions to kill themselves, but surely that is what is happening don't you think? I think Mojo Filler might know more. He was there when it all happened as I heard it."

The heroes packed up Waldo's things and his body and covered the whole of it in the mans tarp. The trip back to the town seemed longer in the dark than it had during the day, but soon they were at the gate. The wooden and stone gatehouse was lit by two torches stuck into the wall on the towers to either side, ten feet up and out of reach. Everyone seemed to remember these were lit when they left. Everburning torches most likely.

Who goes?" came a call from high above. Almost immediately another voice from above yelled.
"That's Kristoph. Let 'em in. I owe him a drink." yelled Trag from the darkness above.

When they came through the opened gate Trag was there to pump Kristoph's hand."Great to see you. What have you there?" he asked as he followed them to the Sea Chapel.

News that it was Waldo didn't sit well with the man and he became somber. "Excuse me. I should tell his mother." Trag said as he left down a side street.

At the Sea Chapel they found Isaac and Reshakka sitting by the door on simple wooden stools. The liontaurs stool was quite large and creaked with each movement, but seemed solid enough for the creature otherwise. He was just telling Isaac that Mojo would probably look forward to the conversation.

Waldo's body was brought into the small temple where he was uncovered and a spell paced upon him to stop the decomposition of the body and eliminate the smell. Mrowlei pulled back a curtain to see what was happening and then set about preparing one of the apses for the body.

"I'll take over from here, Reshakka." Mrowlei said as he started arranging things for the presentation of the body. In the flurry of activity the heroes were forgotten, but Reshakka paused to turn back to them once more.

"Thank you for bringing him in. I can tell however there is something wrong. You'll need this." he said while he pressed Waldo's scarf in Isaac's hand. "If you'll excuse me. There is much to do before the morning."

‘You’ll need this’. Onesimos considers the cryptic advice but doesn’t say anything.

Over the next three days, the elf is seen helping out at the Chapel, though he doesn’t hold any special services or leads any. Visits to the WLA and practicing combat in the street or wherever the group practice take up most of the rest of his time. Three days pass and on the third day the rain returned. This time it was a full blown winter storm with a few flurries mixed in. The streets were clear but had small patches of ice here and there that melted away in the early morning hours. The fields to the south however stayed white and pristine looking for most of the morning. By nightfall the rain had washed most of the white icy stuff away.

One thing the chill did do was bring people into the tavern to enjoy the warmth of the blue fire. The tone of the place was solemn however even though those that saw the heroes seemed to be glad to see them. Peoples heads were down and no one met each others gaze as they went about their day.

Also on the third day was Waldo's funeral. His mother was a poor woman and all she could afford was a simple casket and a plot in the town cemetery. The service too was simple with little mention of any of the gods, but there was quite a bit of sage burning, rattle shaking, and feather waving. When it was all done everyone was assured no evil spirits remained. Reshakka could be seen shaking his head at that news as he appeared to know better.

At the WLA those days Akoka's sorting skills didn't seem any better. She still was having trouble getting a handle on the structure of the organization in spite of the help provided by the heroes. She just didn't seem cut out for administrative work.

Elsewhere in the port town people were slowly getting ready for the fall festival. Some called it Leaffall for all the leaves that fell from the trees, others called it Eventide due to the calm waters of the bay. Either way it was a time for the ships to deliver goods while the weather was mild. Even in the rain and ice the ships would make good time safely to Hook City and Cliffport.

Two days of rain and it cleared up once more though the days were crisp and cold. The mood in town lightened as Leaffall grew closer and the smell of pies was in the air. Apparently there was a pie cooking contest each year and Miss Prissy won most years. This year there was talk about some fierce competition. Violet Ravenshair had a new recipe.

That week Both Snark and Tae Che seem to be scarce, as Snark was busy penning scrolls and Tae was working on her Jewelry as she had found the jeweler and managed to get the materials she needed. Benni worked in the Chapel and like Isaac developed a relationship with Reshakka, however both he and Isaac found that they had new names. Reshakka called Isaac "Scretch" and Benni he called "Fluffwin". Mrowlei then revealed his real name was Roland as they all had a good laugh about Reshakka and his Liontaur names. Apparently he had names for everyone in town.

The town mood was off but improving until someone ran in the tavern late one night and claimed in a loud and excited voice that woke everyone in the place that he'd seen Waldo's ghost....

Onesimos is amused at another name, smiling whenever he is called ‘Fluffwin’, but not really responding. It wouldn’t do to divert from the reason he is there. He quotes an old teacher now far away. ”a group of people is a community, and they need more than words of hope. They need to see the benefit of being together.”. The elf quirks amusement again at names, and continues to learn about Heranmar, the Luck Makers, and make himself helpful at Chapel, at WLA, or in town wherever anyone needs a hand, a friendly ear, or soothing voice.

The evening when someone claims to have seen Waldo’s Ghost, Benni focuses on the team of heroes to see what they think or do.

Tae Che is sitting in the common room in the inn when the townsfolk entered and exclaimed they'd seen Waldo's ghost. Her eyes widened as she heard the news. "Where?" She asked the townsperson. This would be quite upsetting to the people of Heranmar with all their charms and such, so discovering the way to alleviate it quickly is important, she thinks to herself.

Another week had passed in Heranmar and the people had become a little despondent. Most of the townsfolk were glad to see the heroes when they appeared, but it was clear that something was off. Perhaps the novelty of the group was waning or perhaps it was Waldo's ghost. Either way it seemed the townsfolk might be a little fickle.

Waldo had been seen three times in the past week, each time in the early morning hours both inside and outside the walls of the town. Since the gates were typically closed in the evening the townsfolk were concerned about it and started to make the sign of the evil eye to ward off spirits each time they took to the streets. Make a circle in front of your face and then draw an x through that and done. Of course since it didn't work the sign started getting so complex people were taking as much as a minute to exit a building.

"Yeah, supposed to get some soon."
"Gabor and crew head out?"

"The swamp beast might get 'em."

Onesimos settles down to a routine. After morning ablutions, meditations, and breakfastations, he helps out Akoka in organizing in the morning. The afternoon is spent on the steps of Seaside Chapel telling stories, or helping anyone who asks with whatever they are doing. The evening is a workout at the weapons sale, and at the closing of the gates he is back to the Bluefire Tavern to catch up with the Luck Makers and getting to know the others more.

All of this is to establish himself in the town, and also to pass the time until a real adventure might not bring the heroes together again. Just the thought of finally sharing in an adventure with these good souls makes his eyes sparkle in anticipation.

He was pretty tired after running around and was starting to think about getting a permanent place to live in town.

Kristoph rises early (5am) and heads to the blacksmiths with Blusinda.
She lights up the forge and he works up a sweat, hammering away, learning a new trade.
Around 11am he heads back to the inn and cleans up.
Meanwhile the Blue Fire Cat takes up her place and bathes everyone in her warmth and light.

Throughout the day Kristoph practices martial arts with a practice wooden dummy and goes for a run.

His afternoons are filled with helping out either with the WLA set up or simple tasks like chopping wood and exploring Heranmar.
He even discusses helping the town watch (being an ex-constable).

Except for a mild ice storm a week back the weather here had been cool with an isolated shower here and there. Mostly these were during the night or late evening thus washing the streets so that everything was smelling fresh each day. Since that last bit of ice however the weather had remained above freezing if not a bit too cold for most outdoor activities.

Despite the feeling that each day was a new beginning the people here were becoming more despondent. Perhaps it was the death of Waldo, or that his ghost was now haunting the town at night. As in real life Waldo was elusive appearing here or there and vanishing as quickly as he arrived. Some reported that they could smell apples just before he appeared to them, others reported smelling wet sheep. Whichever it was those that saw Waldo seemed to be visted with the most awful luck.

The black smith struck his thumb with his hammer, the baker ruined two pies, Captain Jerr ran his ship up onto the rocks and nearly lost it, and Sgt. Lattimer saw the hanging tree and jumped from the wall. He was found the next day at the foot of the town wall, bloodied and broken, but alive. Everyone counted him very lucky to have survived, but so unlucky to have fallen to the tree's influence.

Mojo Filler was there when they found Lattimer and Isaac managed to catch him to question the man. Mojo was more than happy to talk and related his experience with little Amy and Lattimer. He was the town crier you see and in making his rounds he happened upon them both. Amy was too young, he lamented, but only a few people knew what that tree was truly all about and he never asked them. He was glad that the tree wouldn't return for another year now that it had appeared, but he feared for the town next time.

Isaac continued to collect stories about the haunts and superstitions of the port town including that of the Harbor beast, his child, and any number of strange things. It seemed that each time he asked about a strange thing, he discovered three more. These people had a terror or superstition about everything.

"You should hang a white towel before you bake." said the baker lady.
"If I don't light the coals in an "X" pattern me shoes don't forge right." said the blacksmith
"We always take the ship out at 3 minutes past the first hour after hide tide." said one boatswain.
"I always turn left coming out me door. When I turn right, terrible things happen." said one townswomen.
The list went on and on.

Tae Che spent the mornings working on her jewelry and afternoons walking through the town. Once she counted steps between buildings and other places, like the goldfish pond, the wall around the town, and the docks. She was friendly to anyone she met, keeping her hooded cloak up on sunny days and down when cloudy and/or rainy. This was "home" and she wanted to know all about it.

Onisimos spends some time with the group, getting to know each as a person as well as part of a community of adventurers. Tae-Chu the dark elf girl with colorful hair, the diminutive Teddy and his strange toad, Einar and his warrior prowess, Isaac and his significant other, Snark the inquisitive gnome who seems flighty but rarely forgets anything, Drotar the quiet half-Orc, and Kristoph who is quite agile for a human.

Clerics have protective spells that can be useful in battle. Bless of course, but would you benefit from a Magic Weapon spell? It even works on the Unarmed Stikes of Monks, if not on natural claws.”

Isaac felt a wave of relief when he heard that the hanging tree only appeared once a year
While there was no more danger for now he would have to get ready for the next time it appeared. However he was starting to think Snark was right about how much of the legends the towns folk seemed to be ridiculous. Still the legends and superstores were entertaining to discover. But superstores and legends about haunts that stole your clothes didn't pay bills he decided to ask the sheriff if he needed any help since he was a trained gaurdsmen.

Gore'Thum expects to work with the group to solve troubles in town frequently, a thought that seems to frighten Teddy but he seems resigned to do what the frog says. Drotar grows restless at the dithering and superstitions of the townsfolk, especially as they seem little motivated to solve problems on their own. He takes to pacing the streets, wandering with no real goal in mind, just looking for something different, away from the cowards jumping at their own shadows. He doesn't truly blame them, they are out of their element, but its annoying nonetheless.

When group strategies are discussed, he quietly listens and nods along, although he understands little of magic and has a difficult time grasping some of its intricacies.

The People and Culture:

Heranmar is home to several hundred residents, depending on the season as well as the fishing and hunting. The people of Heranmar tend to set the culture for the peoples of The Gateway Downs. The first thing a stranger notices is how very superstitious they are. They have a “warding off” sign or phrase for almost every imagined fear or misfortune. They place wards on their houses to keep out ghosts and evil spirits. They have protections against illness, pirate invasion, thieves, saying the wrong thing, curses, bad luck, to name a few. These protections change as often as the talk about what curses and bad luck is currently “in the night air.”

Much of this stems from the unusual activity of the Powers in their region and their enforced agendas to further their influence. There is more “conflict” among the powers in The Gateway Downs than anywhere on the Southern Continent. Thus those in Heranmar who revere the powers, are very fickle. Depending on their personal current concerns as well as their concerns about the port as a whole, they patron different powers. Seldom does one patron only one power and seldom does one patron a god. Gods are mysterious and too untrustworthy. They are “of the north” and way too powerful to care about someone in Heranmar. The only two gods that are occasionally patroned in the Gateway Downs are Serenbeth and Wardd.

Along with all the superstitions are those who practice various forms of “giftedness.” The gifted may toss bones, read tea leaves, examine tarot cards, or many of a 100 other methods to try and see the future. What these gifted people discern by their particular technique, the town usually believes. Some of these people are actually gifted. Some just think they are. Some do this instead of patroning any power. Most, however, do several types of techniques to ward off “luck of the frog” and bring a “blessed future.”

Kristoph worked with the blacksmith and learned a little, mostly how to build a proper fire for heating metal as well as the proper use of the bellows to get the coal fired forge to the right temperature.

Those that try to reach out to the sheriff find Eugene to be friendly enough and a good resource here in Heranmar. He seems to have some measure of confidence in the group and admits there are some things he'd like for you to look into, but he has to wait on the next council meeting and bring those items before that group.

Also there seems to be some disquiet about the gatherers of the Spirit Woad. Everyone in town is anxious about their return so that the winter supply of Woad can be laid in. Without it the rituals in town won't be as effective, or simply won't work.

KS: Nature DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Spirit Woad is a small flowering plant that can be burned or stewed in concoctions. It is supposed to have properties that stave off evil spirits or bring vitality to those that imbibe it's essence. If burned like sage it can banish evil spirits for a time or at least make them feel unwelcome so they depart.}

Late at night in the streets....

The night is rainy, but visibility in the streets is good as a few everburning torches light the way. Puddles in the streets continue to collect water as the channels at their center slough away the rainwater under the gates and into the harbor. Tonight the East and West gate are closed, but the Dock Gate remains open...

Isaac walked the wall, Tae in the street two over, Drotar stood on the front steps of the Bottim Inn, Gore'Thum basked once more in the cold rain, Benni relaxed and listened to the rain as it pattered against the windows, Kristoph was on walk about down by the docks, Einar was at the forge and clearing it away after a day of hard work, next to Benni in the tavern Snark scratched in his journal.

The sight and sounds of the ghost shake you to your very soul as you try to resist the urge to flee.

A woman in an open door way screams. As soon as the woman screams Waldo vanishes...

Depending on their personal current concerns as well as their concerns about the port as a whole, they patron different powers. Seldom does one patron only one power and seldom does one patron a god. Gods are mysterious and too untrustworthy. They are “of the north” and way too powerful to care about someone in Heranmar. The only two gods that are occasionally patroned in the Gateway Downs are Serenbeth and Wardd.

"Along with all the superstitions are those who practice various forms of “giftedness.” The gifted may toss bones, read tea leaves, examine tarot cards, or many of a 100 other methods to try and see the future. What these gifted people discern by their particular technique, the town usually believes. Some of these people are actually gifted. Some just think they are. Some do this instead of patroning any power. Most, however, do several types of techniques to ward off “luck of the frog” and bring a “blessed future.”

Drotar stands on the steps of the inn, looking out over the street from the security of a short overhang, watching the rain. When the scream rings out he springs to action immediately, without wasting a second, and before he was even had a conscious thought on the matter he had his double axe out in one hand, a dagger readied within his sleeve to be thrown at a moments notice if need be, scanning each window and alleyway he passes as he sprints to the source of the noise. He's hoping its some mundane threat like a robber or perhaps a wandering monster, but given the strange happenings around town recently....he's not expecting it to be.

Onesimos pauses in his contemplation of the patrons of the Inn, and gives a crooked smile in Snark’s direction. A feeling of goodwill to all people dances behind his brown eyes, and the elf muses out loud. ”Many kinds of love, friend Snark, and yet they don’t have definite ends or beginnings. More like a woven band of many cords. One can see each strand with pleasure, yet it is most enjoyable to see the whole creation.”

The elf’s reverie is broken by the scream. Without conscious thought, he is over the table, grabbing his woven oil-cloak, and dashes outside to follow any growing sound. No time to go to his room and get his armor or Morningstar. His Starknife and Flower’s holy symbol will have to be enough!

Isaac shivered in the cold rain. He was reminded of his time spent back in Hook Town when he was at the front gate greeting the travelers from Mudtown. Rainy days were always the worst forcing overstuffed wagons through the mud was always a chore. He shook the thoughts from his head when he hears the scream. He starts running towards the direction he heard the scream.

Tae Che smiles when the rain begins, taking down her hood to let it soak her hair. It's when the rain starts to pelt down on her that she flips the hood back up. When next she looks out, she sees Waldo's ghost heading straight towards her, his mouth open attempting to say something. (Will Save: 21) At first she was shocked and surprised to see him/it. Then, she heard the woman's scream. Waldo disappeared immediately afterwards. Tae hurried over to the woman to see if she was alright and nothing was amiss.

Sheltering from the cold rain Kristoph enters the Dock Gate Tavern and orders an ale.
He fails to hear the woman's scream as it is drowned by shouts coming from the cellar.
Finishing his drink he heads downstairs to investigate.
The boisterous yelling and cheering has a familiar sound and he feels he already knows what's going on.
Then he spots something that makes his blood run cold...

(ok genuinely ashamed of my own posting behavior. I'm not good RP'ing downtime... I tend to get distracted and lose interest. Making note to self to do better!)

That evening Einar comes home - he started to call the Blue Cat home now that Selene works there as a barmaid and they have a cozy room there - from the smithy. He's found a job also working as a help for the blacksmith. He was destined to take over his father's smithy back in Hook City but things have turned out differently. Walking home he started to enjoy the occasional gently rain. It felt cool on his face after a day of working around the furnace.

Enjoying a calm evening in the inn he listens to what Snark has to say about Herenmar. It's a strange town that's for sure but one that he starts calling home as well... He was dozing off when suddenly everyone is surprised but the scream...
