The heroes rushed into the wet night as they sought out the source of the scream. When they arrived each saw Tae comforting a woman at the door of her flat. Apparently she'd seen the apparition as she was disposing of some grey water in the night. The woman was severely shaken, but otherwise unharmed.
The mystery of Waldo continued but with no further proof that he was around they eventually retired to their rooms for the night. The next day that same woman was trampled by a horse that got away from it's owner for a moment. All the eye witnesses swore that she saw the equine start at a sudden sound, but she froze in place and it stepped on her. The woman would live, but it would take her several days to recover.
The heroes noticed that in the past week the “mood” of the town has changed. The streets had filled with cheer again after the return of the lucky fish, but once again everyone moved with their heads down. They avoided eye contact and frequently touched lucky charms and made wards against evil spirits. A few noticed the group and you could almost make out whispers as they passed but everyone gave you a wide berth.
Later that day the heroes were once again relaxing in the Blue Cat Tavern at the Bottim Inn when a haggard Filael entered the room. Filael was the old fisherman from the tradehouse that they’d learned was actually one of the councilmen in Heranmar as well as its Mayor. Tonight he was wearing his official clothing when he entered the tavern. He searched the room and finally locked his gaze upon Kristoph and said. ”Spirits Willing, I’m glad I found you. Please, there is no time to waste. The council has been in session all day and we’ve a favor to ask of you. All of you. Would you please accompany me to the council chambers?” the mayor said as he stopped at the bar for an ale, apparently there was time for that.

The heroes are lead to the manor by an ale carrying mayor across the street where the council meetings were held. Though the place was huge, they didn’t enter any further than the main council room. It was a large room with torches set about it’s perimeter with a long table set against the wall on one side and thirty chairs lined up facing the table in six rows of five each. Many of the chairs were already occupied by concerned citizens. There were six chairs behind the long table, five of them had a council person in it.
There was a buzz in the room as the heroes entered, though the council persons remained quiet.
“What do you think they’ll be able to do?” “Beats me. Wish the mayor had brought me one.” “The hope is that they won’t get killed by the Swamp Beast.” “What swamp beast?” “You haven’t HEARD of the swamp beast? Let me tell you…..” whispers “Hey Kristoph!” “There’s that strange looking bear again.” “What about that frog that follows him around. Wonder what he eats.” “As long as it isn’t me, I’m fine.” “They found Waldo.” “Yeah, but I seen ‘em walking down the street last night.” “Yer seein’ ghosts.” “Yep. Stumped me toe on the steps outside. Bad luck that one is.”
The heroes can see several of the councilpersons are there. Each look as haggard as poor Filael. There are five council members in total, including Filael. You recognize Sheriff Eugene among them but none of the other three. Of the three there is a minotaur, a man and a woman. By the woman’s garb she appears to be a priestess of the crones. Sitting to one side is a man with a crutch grasped in his hands.

Instead, each member is a town leader in one important town role. However, the stated roles are: merchant/trade(Rap Goodfellow) , sheriff(Eugene “Whip” Bates), giftedness/faith(Honora), fishing/hunting(Filael), councilperson at large(Ilthamar the Minotaur). When you are asked to join, you remain for 5 years. In the 5th and final year, you are also the mayor and council leader, Filael holds that position at present. A former council member cannot be chosen to serve again for 2 years.}

Before we go in, Snark casts Message on all the party members so we can all whisper quietly to each other.
Once we are inside, he looks around. When Benni refers to Heranmar as a "loving" community, the little gnome snorts as he holds back a laugh. He whispers quietly to Benni, "Loving. Good one."
He takes a big draw on the ale he brought. With beer dripping from his sky blue mustache, he says, "Hey you guys. Mr. Falafel here says you guys been meetin' all day on sumpthin. So, what's up? Want me to have the tavern folks bring some beer over for the rest a' you? Yer probably thirsty too. An' from the looks on yer faces, it might help."
Then he swipes his sleeve across his lip, wiping away the beer as he whispers a message to his friends about what he know of each council member there. (Knowledge Local = 21).

Snark's offer to get everyone a beverage was met with flat stares, except for the minotaur councilman who nodded and motioned with his large bovine eyes to get going.
Benni then asked ”Mayor Filael, Sheriff Eugene, and Councilors, greetings in our temporary stay in the Wold. How may we assist the loving community of Heranmar?”
Filael set his beverage down, took his place behind the long table with the other council members and faced the heroes. ”Heranmar is in trouble.” he started and then the room erupted.
“My husband is missing! What are you going to do about it?” “A monster ate my son! I’m sure of it. Corrin saw it happen in her dreams!” “They are lost. I knew Trevvor should have gone, he’s faking that broken leg!” “No one ever returns from the Spirit Swamp.” “Wait, I returned.” “You don’t count. You’re too stupid to know the danger you are in.” “Wait…what about the hunters?”
”Calm down everyone.” Filael commanded from his seat as he rose somewhat and raised his voice. ”We’ll get to the bottom of this.”
”It seems,” the Mayor started. ”Our Spirit Woad hunters have gone missing. Not only are they important members of the community, but the integrant they were to return with is important to the town. Without it the people of Heranmar may panic thinking that we are doomed and calamity will befall all of us. Naturally we’d like to see the missing people returned to us, or find out what became of them at the very least. Doomsoothing aside, there is a measure of propriety here in getting our people back.”
Heads nodded everywhere in the room. Murmurs of “it’s true.” echoed about the room as everyone’s eyes turned to the heroes.
“As the only members of the WLA in town I’ve been asked to request you investigate the Spirit Swamp, return with our hunters, and their harvest. Trevvor here will tell you where to start looking. The spirit woad is very important to us and quite valuable, should you return with it the reward will be great. No less than 1,000 pieces of gold if you can recover the woad and make it safe to collect once more if monsters are indeed the cause of the missing hunters.”

The elf listens gravely to the predicament, giving many glances at the others to try and gauge thier mood. He stands straighter as the Mayor calls on them as members of WLA. He’s not sure how the others will answer, bilaterally there is only one possible one for him.
“ Dedicated to fighting evil, in all its deadly forms, and in protecting the innocent. That’s what the WLA is for, and I will definitely go.”. He is oblivious to any local knowledge.

Snark notices Ilthamar's interest in some ale, and he nods to the minotaur as he heads toward the door. He sets his own ale down and heads out.
As he scurrys over to the Tavern he whispers to his friends via his Message spell, "Spirit Woad is a small flowering plant that can be burned or stewed in concoctions. It is supposed to have properties that stave off evil spirits or bring vitality to those that imbibe it's essence. If burned like sage it can banish evil spirits for a time or at least make them feel unwelcome so they depart. Every fall they send some folks into the Spirit Swamp to collect this stuff. This town will start to lose it if they don't get their year's supply.
"Lemme know if sumthin else happens. I'm going to get the butcher some beer."
Once he is at the tavern, he slaps a gold on the counter and says, "Hey, can you get me a minotaur sized mug of ale? Maybe it should be a bucket, eh? I'm bringing it to Ilthamar." Once he has this, the little gnome will do his best to carry it back over and over and put it up on the Council table for Ilthamar.

Drotar is quite familiar with the councilors, and has heard of spirit woad but didn't pay much attention to the superstitious rituals surrounding it. He crosses his arms as they speak, and responds.
"Why do you think they haven't returned? And why don't you just grow the plant yourselves if its so dangerous to get and so important? It isn't as if there's no room to plant fields."
He sighs, pinching his forehead and closing his eyes as he begins to think of possibilities.
"How many are lost and how much do you need?"

All local knowledge is above Kristoph's head so he nods a thanks when any is passed on. He also appreciates the "whisper" spell. Nodding and smiling when Benni said he was in (earlier) he is eager to investigate but curbs his enthusiasm whilst questions are asked.
It seems someone goes missing here every week. He looks around the room to see if anyone is acting shifty (perception:11)

Isaac tried to remember what he had over heard about the swamp from the locals. He remembered the Spirit Woad was something important, a ceremonial item but not the specifics. Snark however was able to fill him and the others on what it was. The word Doomsoothing he found was very appropriate the the town as the towns folk were in a constant state of applying any charm or ritual they could get their hands on. "I will volunteer and may I ask how long ago were the Woad hunters sent in and when were they expected back? Also how many were in the group?"

The party is asked if they will take on an investigation, and perhaps a rescue, of what happend to the missing Heranmarians in the Spirit Swamp. Most everyone agrees, and any sillence from some is interpreted as agreement.
Drotar asks why they have not returned, and why they don't grow Spirit Woad near town if it's so valued. Kristoph looks around and thinks they're all these folk are a little shifty.
Most everyone there makes some sort of warding gesture at the mention of the missing villagers. Filael replies, "We don't know for sure, but some here suspect there is a creature in the swamp that may have gotten them. While I don't know a monster, to be sure there are many dangers in the swamp. There are some dangerous creatures there, but the terrain itself poses a number of hazards."
With the heros acceptance of this task, relieved nods and murmuring ripple through the assembled folk. Filael says, "Excellent! It's decided. The WLA heroes will venture into the swamp and seek answers to the missing. May the crones protect them.
The crowd echoes, "May the crones protect them.", followed by more nervous warding gestures.
Most seem to move to the Blue Cat Tavern, almost dragging the heroes with them. There is a celebration, though it is not entirely clear if this is an anticipation of success or a last drink with you all before you die.
------------------------------------- You get news that Trevvor, Sundel, and Faign returned in the morning. All three were severely injured.
Only Trevvor actually seeks out the heroes. He seems to avoid the other townsfolk, and is not happy when they pester him. He won’t talk to them, and can only be convinced to talk so with no one else but the heroes present.
Heal DC 10:Highlight to display spoiler: {The injuries look to be bruises and scrapes and pokes of some sort. These injuries would be consistent with a headlong run through hazardous terrain, perhaps in the dark.}
Diplomacy DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Trevvor will explain that a path into the Spirit Swamp lies just twenty five miles west along the swamp road. On the north side of the road is a burned out tree stump. Walk thirty feet beyond it into the wood and you will find the path to the swamp. The path diverges many times but if you stay to the northern routes you’ll eventually find an old set of standing stones. There in the grove at their center the plant sometimes can be found. If the hunters haven’t taken it already you’ll also find a small boat you can use to travel deeper into the swamp to the Monument Graves. This old grave yard is located in a section of the swamp where cypress trees have grown closely enough to shape a small island. The Spirit Woad grows next to the stones there. Then there is the Barrow Hill. It’s another graveyard of sorts and the Woad grows atop it. }

Onesimos is knowledgeable in Healing but Diplomacy escapes the elf. He seeks out Trevvor, Sundel, and Faign, to ask them what they encountered and how to find the path to the others. He will heal each with a burst of positive energy (channel Energy: 4, 5, and 5 respectively)

Snark smiles at Teddy's apprehension. "Heh, no worries there Ursa Minor. We're about the same size, you an' me. Stick with me an' we'll figure this out together. Besides, we got a bunch of big folk with us, a firecat and a battle frog! What could go wrong?"

Isaac is relived that the hunters have returned but has questions for them. As he looks over Trevvor he notices the cut's and scrapes looking more like he ran through a bush and into thorny vines. They didn't appear to be from any animal. He tries to get the man to open up about what happened but it seems he only wanted to speak to all the Luck Bringers.
"Trevor you look like you hit every tree and bush getting back here what did you see? Some monster, a fey, or was it a spirit?"

Trevvor wasn’t talking to anyone, but Kristophs win in the drinking game endowed him with a little street cred that won the Woad hunter over after some assurances that the heroes wouldn’t take their jobs from them. Trevvor explained the way and offered that a few of them didn’t make it out when they were startled at night. The fear that overcame them had them running through the dark and he fell in a low spot. The cirgeon said it was only a mild break which explained how he was able to run back with it.
The other hunters that escaped weren’t talking as they were too frightened of angering the powers. They’d sworn off any more trips into the swamp.

Before heading out, Einar will check the local store for some hemp or silk rope. 50ft will do nicely in case of trouble. Once he has the rope he makes a knot at one end with a hole to put your wrist through. And then a few more knots to make sure the rope offers a good grip.

Though Einar was listening carefully to the council members it became clear that it was only going to be a 1,000 gp for them to split, not a thousand each.
In answer to Drotar's suggestion about growing the Woad locally he's told that woad will grow locally, but Spirit Woad needs the energies found in the Spirit Swamp to properly form. Something about the holy energies in the graves there that embue the plant with it's special properties.

It was still early evening when the council ended their session and the mayor escorted the heroes back to the tavern. Along the way he offered to open the tradehouse tonight if they needed any supplies as he'd really like them to head out at first light. He's willing to advance each member 25gp in equipment.
At the Tavern...
In speaking with Trevvor you discover that Gabor, Illarial, Sundel, Faign, and Percivan were the other hunters. Trevvor, Sundel, and Faign returned this morning. They all suffered injuries and he's certain Faign was bitten by a Reefclaw.

Like any swamp there are soft spots that might drag you under so it's best to stay to the path. If you are sharp of eye there are markers in the swamp. Small stone monuments with numbers chiseled into them. Next to number 112 they might find his bow, that's where he fell. He warns you about dragon fish, pirates, and reefclaw. Occasionally they've encountered lizard folk, but at this time of year the creatures would be moving slowly and likely keep to their warm burrows.

Einar frowns when he realizes they'll be splitting 1000 gold with the whole group but ok... it's a matter of gaining reputation also. While he normally has a good knowledge of nature, Einar can't identify what creature caused the bite marks on Faign.

He will go buy some more torches and ask Einar the Mighty to carry them for the little gnome. "These might come in handy to keep swarms at bay."
Snark will also ask the locals about any kind of herbal remedies or things you can burn to keep insects away.

Kristoph listens to all the town's people, their fears, concerns and requests in silence, then adds: "I share your concern brothers and sisters for this is our home too now. My W.L.A. companions, myself and the blue fire cat herself will do everything we can to assist you"!
On the way back he is once again silent, chewing his lip, appearing to be lost in thought but in reality he studies every shadow, coiled and ready to spring at the slightest movement. It may take a really good/trained eye to perceive this posture. It seems to be a Kristoph thing. Ever ready for action but appearing calm, relaxed or distracted. To a really eagle-eyed person who understands this - it might be possible to tell he seems (perhaps even?) extra cautious tonight, despite the party being within the town.
Back at the inn he crouches in front of the fire and carefully places a log into the hearth, stroking the flickering blue flame for a while. Blusinda's heat doesn't seem to bother him and he talks to her in ignan: "Will I never be free from them girl"? he asks the flames. "Half of Wold have I travelled and yet still they hound me. Am I never to be rid of his evil"?

Drotar spends the day lost in silent thought, trying to piece together the puzzle of this town. Something's felt off here for a while, and he doesn't like it. He's naturally suspicious, and the strange behavior of the townsfolk keeps setting off all kinds of alarm bells. Drotar doesn't have anything solid to go on but....he sleeps lightly.

The Woad hunters typically rely on heavy boots, kindling to start fires for warmth, and warm clothing. They also recommend a dry bag for anything that can't get wet, like a spellbook. The dry bags here can hold one spellbook or 10 pounds of goods and have to be dried and oiled after each exposure to water. One bag costs 5gp.
Morning came and the air was cold and misty with no rain as they gathered downstairs in the Blue Cat Tavern. Eugene the sheriff and the Mayor were both there to see the heroes off on their journey.
"It's going to be dark and overcast, but no rain for as far as our weather seer can....see."
Clouds overhead are intense and the day dark as a result. Travel to the west gate is easy enough but once out beyond the walls of the town a chill wind cuts through them like a knife. By the time they reach the edge of the woods half a mile distant and it's relative protection from the coastal winds they are all chilled to the bone as the mist in the trees closes around them....

Teddy and Gore'Thum are happy with the suggested marching order. He doesn't have anything he has to keep safe but brings some dried meat that shouldn't be spoiled by getting a little wet.

Isaac will be near the front using a bullseye lantern to illuminate the way. However he tells the other he will need someone with good ears and eyes to help watch for ambushes. Just because the lizard men should be in their huts or asleep doesn't guarantee it.
