On to Elvengard

The group comes to a consensus on getting to Elvengard.

Everyone but Micah. The cleric, after much thought, has elected to take his leave of the group, and return to his family business.

The plan requires the team gets to the sequoia the druids have grown on the lake shore, as well as a good night's rest for all spellcasters involved to prepare the necessary spells.
Some may also want to do some extremely last minute shopping.

Fortunately, all of this can happen more or less simultaneously, and by mid-morning of the next day, the Shields, Cathbad, and Carlo find themselves next to an enormous tree. It's girth is adequate to encompass the entire group.

Cathbad takes gem in hand, and awaits the word.

Twelve hours have passed. All casters can prep whatever spells they want, and items from any Catacombs trips completed this weekend will be available. Team has whatever time they want to buff, plan, etc

Stock spends the traveling montage practicing his sailing skills. This mostly takes the form of taking the wheel of the boat and barking at the crew.

Upon arrival at the tree, Stock searches the ground and picks up a rather normal piece of granite - mostly gray with a slight sparkle. He tucks it into his belt pouch for later polishing and then says, "Can't say I've done this before. I take it I'm in the vanguard?"

Bartomus spent the evening getting himself ready and mentally reviewing everything that was shared with him about the spell needed to walk from one tree through it to another. He also spent some time looking at the quarterstaff turned Taur back scratcher and pendant holder and he tried the storage spell this time focusing on the spell that would embed explosive fire into the acorns he had picked up and kept from their last visit to the forest.

Before calling it a night, putting the bone carving aside, he calmed himself and lifted a small prayer to the Fey King. His prayer was a straightforward one asking for reaffirmation of the advice and plan of traveling from tree to tree discussed with Lady Cathbad. He didn't receive any specific sign or feeling and eventually feeling relaxed he faded off into slumber.

His dreams were of bouncing through a forest of giant trees and passing through knotholes of one tree and popping out another with an acorn in his mouth. While the idea of being a squirrel was juxtaposed to his own reality, it did seem to cause him to laugh.

He arose early, dressed and sat his kit by the main door. Then he went out to the little balcony with the new tree that had been planted in its container. He did his morning meditations thanking Eberyon for the dream and took that as a good sign. He wandered back into their headquarters, put on his armor, double-checked all that he was carrying, and followed the others.

"I am pretty sure I am going to need to hold or touch everyone going with me. Once we are ready," Bartomus said looking at the others. "We go in and make this happen. Hopefully, we can be able to help you all going in first with a good punch that gets us safely on our way."

Brittanica only needs 2 hours to sleep thanks to her ring of sustenance and 1 hour to prepare spells so concerivably she spends 8 hours working on her amulet of natural armor netting another 2 days on the project.

She then pours over her spell book and settles on her spells for the day.

Before Setting off since she's still in the Float she arranges to meet with 'Arry D 'Arry H and expands her Pot casts the Centaur version of Tauros Taur Try and does the ritual of warding (Survival :37) continuing to get the +1 to AC and Saves.

immediately before her portion of the party uses the trees to arrive in the second shift she casts the following spells on herself:

Delia bids Micah a sad, but understanding goodbye, wishing him well in his rest and new focus.

Once they arrive at the sequoia, Delia will take a moment to admire it. Resting her forehead against it and breathing in the clean scent of the forest. If Cathbad is transporting up to her limit of PCs, Delia will gently transfer Hawky to Bartomus with the instruction to fly straight up and survey the battlefield once they arrive. If there's room and Hawky travels with Delia, same instructions.

Right before getting on Cathbad's plant train she casts Barkskin (+4, 90 min) and Longstrider (+10 speed, 9 hrs) on herself.

Zanderallen hugs Micah firmly when he announces his departure. "Domi guide you on your new path brother. Tell the family hi, I'm sure we'll see you around." He turns away, hiding a glistening in his eyes.

He keeps to himself for the evening, getting a good rest and rising early for morning devotions and exercises. Praying for his spells he gears up, having to ask a new member of the Shields to help him don his full plate.

As they arrive at the tree, he clasps Stock on the shoulder, "We're first in, and things are likely to get bumpy. Let's make sure and make some space for our more fragile companions. Alright everyone, we're going in. Unknown enemies waiting on the other side, stay together and Domi strengthen us all."

Right before going in Zanderallen casts Protection from Evil on Stock and calls his Divine bond into his sword, adding +1 Holy to it.

The Shields take care of last minute spells.

Then, in accordance with Zanderallen's plan, he, Stock, Stohp, and Delia join hands with Cathbad.
The elven druid takes out the gemstone, and casts a spell.
With a nod, the group walks into the tree.

And then steps out.

The quartet find themselves in the heavy overgrowth of a jungle.
Broad leafed plants and vines sit in clusters, while decaying vegetation litters the ground. The air is heavy with moisture.
Visibility is limited to about 30'

Everything is completely silent. There is no insect chatter, no bird calls, not even wind. Without warning comes a gut feeling of shock, intense hostility, and the certainty that The Crying Woods is aware of the party’s presence. Those that have experienced the feeling of malevolence in the Woods in the past are certain the feeling is much worse now.

Everyone make Will Save DC 15 or be Shaken (fear effect).

There is a rushing sound in the undergrowth, and the group find themselves under assault by what look a lot like small purple orcs.
The creatures attack with two appendages, ending in claw tipped 'hands'.

Each of the four are attacked by a pair.
No one is hit.
But, everyone can see more are on the way.

Bartomus waited a couple of minutes and then cast the spell to take the rest of the party through the tree. He took his time and stepped into the tree and felt himself move through the bark and he continued walking.

When he stepped out of the tree, or rather the other tree, it was warm, humid, and hostile. They were not welcomed at all. If that wasn't felt, the approaching swarm of purplish hued orcs were reaffirmation that this was a hostile land.

Britanica says to Bartomus, "Wait! We need the crystal of Jandeth if we are to safely navigate to Elvengard. Without it who knows what will happen to us? I would suggest waiting for Lady Cathbad and if she doesn't show then maybe we need to mount a rescue expedition using more reliable and slower means of transportation. I'd advise not using the spell without the presence of the crystal to get to Elvengard reliably.
Who knows what the guardian spirit of Jandeth would do to us without it?"

(OOC: Brittanica attempts to interrupt Bartomus from casting his spell without the crystal that will allow them to arrive safely. If he persists in casting the spell without the crystal she will find other means to get there as she doesn't want to chance it and will not travel with the others)

Stock stumbles out of the tree with the smell of wood chips and moist earth in his nostrils and feels the impact of the woods. He shrugs it off though and goes to work on the orc-like things. He's slightly dizzy from his trip though and his swings lack the power and grace they usually have.

Zanderallen shudders a little as the will of the Crying Woods turns it's focus on them. His aura of courage protects him from any fear and bolsters his allies. "Back you go Cathbad, we'll be back as soon as Elvengard is safe." That's about all the time he has to focus on the druid before purple orcs come rushing out of the thick undergrowth. "We've got to hold an opening for the rest of the Shields." He calls out as he engages the orcs in front of him.

All PCs earn 10,000 xp for making it to the Crying Wood!

Stohp trips both of her opponents.

Zanderallen and Stock discover the 'purple orcs' are pretty squishy. All of their attacks destroy the creatures they hit.

Cathbad calls out, "Elvengard is about 150' due north!"
She then casts her spell, and steps into the the tree.

Bartomus is about to cast the spell, but is stopped by Brittanica.
Good thing, too. No telling where they would've ended up.

Cathbad appears almost immediately, and turns over the gemstone to Bartomus.
"Your companions are under attack," she tells Bart, Brittanica, and Ohen. "Be ready."

Note - Transport via Plants is a round long spell, which is spent travelling. Bart, Brittanica, Ohen, and Hawky may only take a free or swift action as part of next post.

The quartet in the Crying Woods find that while the 'purple orcs' die fast, there seems to be an awful lot of them.
The woods rustle as yet more appear, flinging themselves at the party.

Stohp's original two rise from prone, and join the fray.
Unless she has a way for more, Stohp gets an AoO on only one foe

The creatures pack in, clawing away.
Mostly, they do nothing but scratch at armor.

But one breaks through, and Delia is hit.
Delia takes 5 hp damage, plus must make Fort Save DC 11 or be paralyzed d4+1 rounds.

Unless Brittanica falls out of the air and needs to use feather fall there is nothing she can do but take in her surroundings as she does not have a means to cast quicken spells.

She resists the fear effect though easily enough. Still though she would hope being under the effect of overland flight she is somewhat off the ground and hopefully out of the range of the little purple orc people.

Stock keeps working over the little purple orcs moving from left to right, rhythmically swinging his flail at the little guys. The shear number and feracity of them throws Stock off his game though.

Bartomus looked embarrassed when he got pulled back and had to wait for Lady Cathbad to return with the essential gem. He also gulped when she informed them that the party was already under attack. The best he could do while focusing on the casting of the spell was to hold his glave and focus his attention on what would be awaiting them on the other side of the tree.

As they passed through the bark along the way that Lady Cathbad had taken, he shouted "Thank you. We'll be back!"

As more and more of the orcs swarm from all sides Zanderallen really hopes Ohen and Brit brought plenty of fireballs. But no one in the vanguard seemed to be being overwhelmed just yet. He focuses on killing the ones in front of him.

Delia was still hit. And yes, Woodland Stride would allow a PC to move without hinderance.

Delia steps back and kills four of the 'orcs'.

Stohp trips two, and then kills one of those.

Stock kills one.

Zanderallen obliterates one.

Bartomus, Ohen, and Brittanica step/float from the tree into the craziness.
Ohen - Still need a Will Save DC 15 or be Shaken (fear effect).

The creatures seem unconcerned about their losses.
More disturbing is they make no sound, not even when dying.
They come on, and another wave can be seen behind them.

The prone 'orc' in front of Stohp rises again, triggering an AoO.

The rest of the creatures continue to attack, claws scratching against armor.
This time, none find purchase.

Bartomus stepped out from the tree and found even the air heavy. The battle was fully engaged and he saw a small gap straight ahead of him where a purple, snarling orc was standing within the reach of his glave. He focused his attack on the creature and took a slashing stab at its vital organs. The glave struck hard.

Attack on 29 with feat vital strike using the reach of the glave. Hit with a 22 for 19+2 damage for a total of 21 points.

Bartomus was relieved that the ice storm did what he was hoping it would. It also provided some protection, albeit a blind spot as well, to their left flank. Ahead of him, Stock was well engaged in a whack-an-orc event raining down blows on the two purple orcs in front of him with such vigor that Bartomus realized that there wasn't anything he could do to be of any help.

He took a moment to look beyond the last few remaining purple orcs and try to see who or what might be the one(s) ordering them into the massive assault on the Shields.

More precisely, they appear to be some kind of mobile seed. What looks like a head with orc features is a result of shading and coloring, perhaps a camouflage or defensive adaption - there's not enough data to say.

Regardless, they are conclusively plants. Brittanica would know plants are immune to mental effects, such as fear.

Each appears to be a carpet of white fungus encasing a dense mass of vegetation. The creatures are 6' tall and heavy, crashing through the underbrush just like Stock.

Brittanica recalls an obscure treatise on rare plant creatures found deep on the Monster Sancutary in New Elenna.
It is called a psychepore, and is a symbiosis of two different plant creatures—a lurching bit of undergrowth distantly related to the shambling mound and an intelligent cluster of hard fungal growths that possess a malevolent hive mind.
She also relays:
-when hit with a slashing or piercing melee weapon, it releases a cloud of spores, exposing the attacker to the psychepore's poison.
-they can can launch three fragments of its razor-sharp fungal covering as a standard action
-A creature affected by the psychepore's poison has its mind clouded with visions of alien intent. The victim becomes confused for a short period of time.

After relaying this information to the party, she prepares a spell.
There are 10 Prying Eyes remaining, presumably still watching the woods.

Delia moves back to the party, and readies an arrow.

Ohen waits.

Zanderallen steps toward the threat.

Stohp opines that maybe they should just leave.

The psychepores appear to the right rear of the party.
Zanderallen calls out the appearance of the lead creature, but it advances another 15' before Brittanica can see it.
By then, Zanderallen can see several others, and calls out the general central position of the group.
Brittanica obliges, casting Black Tentacles at that relative position.
The paladin can see four of the creatures are enveloped by the spell.

Delia can hear the commotion, but cannot fire as she sees no targets.

#1 remains grappled, but launch three fragments of its razor-sharp fungal covering toward Stohp.
One buries itself deep into the taur's flesh.
Stohp takes 21 hp damage, and must make a Fort Save DC 18 - If failure, roll a d6, and make a Will Save DC 18 or become Confused.

Bartomus was lost in his own thoughts and hears the commotion behind him. As he starts to piece together that they are in fact being attacked and shakes off his own mental focus on where he was stepping and if they were getting closer to Elvengard. He was starting to really hate this type of forest.

He shifted and turned about coming up to the side of the Stohp. At which point he is able to see something white and creeping kinda in the brush. He moved his mouth and fingers, and then flicked his fingers down towards the creature behind Stohp.

Bart moves to the sound of combat. Spying one of the creatures, the taur calls down a lightning bolt upon it.

Stock powers throught the undergrowth to reach a plant creature.

Zanderallen moves to Stohp, and casts Delay Poison on her.
Stohp feels much better.

Delia scoots closer, and then unleashes a fusilade over Stock and into #1.
Three of the attacks hit, though the arrows don't do quite as much damage as she expected.

Stohp grabs her weapon.
Fortunately, Zanderallen's Delay Poison spell allows her to avoid damaging herself.

The Black Tentacles continue squeezing the trapped psychepores.

Brittanica drops a fireball on them.

Ohen follows up with a fireball of his own.

The air sizzles with burning plant.
One of the creatures is dead.

The spellcasters note the wetness of the vegetation appears to have dulled the fire's effects somewhat.

Bartomus suspected that there were more of the creatures advancing just from what he could see. But, he couldn't see far enough from his current vantage point. So he shifted about Britannica and Ohlen and watched as Zander and others unleashed on a couple of the trio coming their general way. He took a brief blink of an eye and snapped his finger downward at the third one in the set calling forth a bolt from the sky.

Stock moves again, this time reaching #2, and slamming it with his flail.
The creature dies, squashed flat.

Zanderallen steps over the squishy remains, and slides in to attack both #3 and #6.
He notes his sword's flame seems to have no effect.
The blade end works well, though. #3 is in bad shape, and #6 is barely hanging on.

As the paladin's blade cuts through the psychepores, clouds of spores are released into his face.

Coughing out the last of the spores Zanderallen backs away from the fungal masses. "Agreed, we should be real close. Can't see anything through these trees. Brittanica holds the party a few rounds to receive the report from her Eyes:

To the north, about a quarter mile away, a grove of large trees sit in a semi-clearing.
A village is built into the trees. From small flower decked homes to large multi-family dwellings, all are suspended above the ground. Some are no more than twenty feet up while others are over seventy five feet in the air.

To the southwest, about a quarter mile before the Eyes turned to return, more plant monsters advance.
Four creatures, some kind of large plant composed mostly of vines and thorns, are zipping along the ground toward the party at good speed.

Meanwhile, Hawky bursts in from the canopy, lands on Delia, gives her another 'found something' screech, launches back through into the sky, and gives another screech as she heads north.

Listening to the reports come in Zanderallen looks around, really not enjoying the extremely limited visibility of the woods. "North, very, very much north!" Bartomus said with a great deal of gusto. He headed that way staying a bit behind to help Zander to put a defense up against the creeping running vines.

"I say we try to hold them off at Elvengard in the clearing, better where we can see them rather amidst all of this brush."

While Brittanica was receiving the report from her eyes, Delia took the opportunity to cast a spell, and speak with Hawky.

"Safe air," she responds to the ranger's question. "Safe air. And people. People/hunters hide in trees."

Brittanica believes the oncoming creatures are known as Blood Brambles. She can't recall much about them other than they are Large Plants with razor sharp thorns, and nastier than either the purple orcs or psychepores.

The party consensus is to move north.
And so, after a bit of marching order reorganization, they do so.

After a mere 60' of travel, things change dramatically.

The undergrowth lessens considerably. The party is still in a forested area, but the trees are more spaced out, and undergrowth is non-existent. It is possible to see 60-80', with an actual sunbeam occasionally breaking through the canopy.

More critically, the oppressive presence of the Crying Wood is gone.

It feels as if emerging from beneath a heavy load.

Bartomus followed along with the others taking more of a rear position as he didn't have to worry about the nasty underbrush as much as everyone else. When they got to the change point, where the oppression of the Crying Wood gave way, he stood a bit taller and took a large stretch.

While he stretched, he took a look about for any of the hidden warriors that they had been warned about.

"Do we just yell out hello?" He asked Zander and Micah.

Delia asks Hawky if he can point her to any specific people and scans the trees and houses for any of these hunters. As she looks around, she pets his head and tells him how much of a good boy he is for scouting.

When Brit shares what's following them, she remarks, "Didn't we have to face some of those when Jasper and his friends were under siege?" She shares what she knows/remembers about the Blood Brambles too.

Still nervously glancing at the direction the blood brambles are coming Zander lets out the breath he didn't know he been holding as the presence of the Crying Wood is gone. He nods at Bart and hollers out, "Hello Elvengaurd. This is the Silver Shields, Cathbad sent us to help. There are Blood Brambles coming after us. We can deal with them if they are a problem."

Presumably the 8 remaining eye constructs are still following orders at this time and keeping an eye out for threats despite the fact that they have reached Elvengard and are out of the crying wood.

Britannica says, "You'd think someone would use a feather token to create an oak tree inside the bounds of Elvengard proper so that the druids wouldn't have to cover all that distance to get here from the tree species they are using. Despite their nature lore they obviously are ill equipped to deal with whatever has the Crying Wood so agitated these days and one thinks they would have taken measures to create a safer passage to the city before things got this bad. I think when we get back we should raise the prospect of using a feather token in this manner with Lady Cathbad. It may save them future grief. Plus if we have an easier way to get here mayhap Bartomus could borrow the gem and we could visit Elvengard frequently enough that I could become familiar enough with the city to teleport here without so much of a risk of mishap. Theoretically if the gem has some energy signature that is recognized by the guardian of this place then as I've speculated applying it to other spells should convey the same message and he should let us through."

Emerging from the oppresive atmosphere of the Crying Woods is a breath of fresh air.

Stock, Delia, and Bartmous look about for the guards Hawky alerted on.
All three pick out a couple of figures in two nearby trees.

Everyone notices there is no tree city at this location.
Brittanica would be able to do some math and realize it is likely another quarter mile ahead.

The mystic also comments on the efficiency of a mode of transport subject to attacks such as they just experienced.

Zanderallen calls out a hail.

There is a pause, then an answer.
"We hear you, Silver Shields."

Two elves (the ones already spied by the group) drop gracefully down, and approach the party, hand raised in the universal "I come in peace" sign.

"I am Aeron," one says.
"The plants are not a threat. They will not pass the barrier."

Aeron, and his companion, are dressed in simple green jerkin and breeches, and carry longbows and a dagger.
Both regard the group with curiosity, and mild suspicion.

"Why are you here?"

Stock puffs out his cheeks and exhales. "Well, it isn't the easiest to explain but see we were 'waiting for the other shoe to drop' - that's what I call it when we have a little downtime and we're just waiting for the next calamity to befall us - when we received a message that a guy who I guess is a ghost or a spirit or something sent a message to another guy - Stoneminder I think was his name - who sent a message to a Dwarf in the Float named Deepforge - I haven't decided if I trust him yet - that you all needed our help. So we jumped into a tree and killed some purple not-orcs."

Zanderallen accepts the elves' assurance and sheathing his sword returns the raised hand gesture. "Simply put, we're here to help. A message went out to the WLA and Cathbad told us the last supply run had been attacked and unable to get through. We're friends of Jellah and would like to see her if possible." He awaits a response from the elven warriors, trying not to look over his shoulder where he knows the Blood Brambles are.

"Plus, we have a bit of a history with the Crying Woods further south," Bartomus added without any real malice still trying to jump all of the mental hurdles that Stock ran through in a mere few seconds. He gave Zander a nod and added. "He knows the best approach for some of these assist things."

"Oh, um, anyway we can have a mobile version of whatever it is keeping those nasties away? I would love to know how you all do that."

The elf is completely baffled, furrowing his brow as he vainly attempts to follow along.

At Zanderallen's summay of the situation, the furrows ease.
"Welcome then. Help is surely appreciated"

Bartomus and Brittanica add some questions.
Aeron's companion takes a breath as if to answer, but Aeron raises a hand.
"We will escort you to the Reeve. He may address you questions."

Aeron's companion turns, and heads north.
Aeron indicates for the party to follow.

Stock looks at Z and then at Stohp and says, "Maybe next time when somebody asks why we're here, I'll just say we're here for 'Hero Stuff'. Maybe these guys would have understood me better if I had been speaking Elvish. All Sid taught me was the swears though."

Stock dutifully follows along, happy that things seem to be calming down.

The presence of the Crying Woods is quite heavy outside your community." He follows along behind the elf, eager to learn more of the situation from the Reeve.

There is some good natured bantering regarding Stock's 'explanation'.

Zanderallen notes the presence of the Crying Wood outside the community, and Aeron grimaces and nods, but offers nothing else.

He does respond to Brittanica's question.
"Yes, the Reeve is leader of Elvengard."

With that, the group takes a short 5 minute walk northward.
On the way, Brittanica's Prying Eyes return, all with sights of various plant monsters at various distances moving toward where the party was when she cast the spell.

The elves guide the group to the base of a giant tree, and, at the base, they find cleverly hidden stairs grown by the tree itself into the bole. They climb up, up and up.

All around the group appears a town built into the trees. From small flower decked homes to large multi-family dwellings, all are suspended above the ground. Some are no more than twenty feet up while others are over seventy five feet in the air. The buildings celebrate nature at the same time that they are embraced by nature.

The quick and easy climb ends at a large meeting room.

Elf sized chairs are spread throughout, in general around a large table.

"Please wait here," Aeron says. "I will alert the Reeve."

Aeron leaves through an opening on the other side of the room.
His companion stays.

As they climbed, Delia looked around at the city in the trees, smiling softly at the community so deeply integrated into nature. She trails a gentle hand on the giant tree, resisting the urge to cast Speak with Plants and having a nice chat with it.
Once they are in the meeting room, she leans against a "wall" and keeps watch.

"Well, this is pretty spectacular. Kinda like the Float, but in a giant tree in the midst of the forest, Bartomus said as he followed along with the others. He tried to see out into the Crying Wood to get a sense of what it looked like and also to see if any of the giant beetles could be seen. He remembered those.
