Summit at Elvengard

DM MikeK - Doing relevant things
Monday November 29th, 2021 8:17:38 AM

Several of the Shields experience deja vu climbing up the interior of the tree, but no hobbits appear, and Brittanica realizes this is a much smaller version than the Tree of Parting.

After 10 or 15 minutes in the waiting room, the group is joined by a trio of elves.

The two male elves are unfamiliar to the group, but many recognize the third.
Jella Jandeth quickly steps over to embrace Zanderallen, Stock, Stohp, and Bartomus.

"How did you get here?" she wonders, clearly surprised, but pleased, at the group's appearance.

"More to the point," adds a taller elf with shoulder length black hair, "Why did you get here?"

Jella quickly intercedes.
"They are friends. These are the Silver Shields of Floating City. She quickly introduces the four members of the group that she knows.
Looking at Ohen, Delia, and Brittanica for a moment she adds, "and friends" before turning to her two companions.

"This is Tionel," she says, indicating an average sized elf with short blond hair.

"And this is Evandale, our Reeve," - the one with the long black hair.

Evandale has relaxed a little with Jella's announcement that she knows the group.
But, he's still cautious.

"Well met," he greets the team with precise politeness. "But, surely you did not contemplate such a dangerous journey to catch up with old friends."

Evandale waits expectantly.

Instead he focuses on the Reeve, noting his direct nature and looking for any signs of tension in the man.

"It's an honor to meet you all," Bartomus said and added a respectful bow. He took a moment to look at each of the assembled elves and then continued. "Our new friends and colleagues are Ohen, Delia and Brittanica. All quite deserving of being considered part of the Shields as they have demonstrated repeatedly these past few weeks."

He smiled as he pointed at each of the newer members of the group and then cast a glance towards Micah and Zander with the expectation that they would do their leadership thing.

Zanderallen smiles when he sees Jellah and warmly returns her embrace. "It's good to see you Jellah."

As they are introduced Zander bows respectfully to the Reeve, "Well met Tionel, Evandale. We are responding to a request for help. The WLA sent us after our local chapter house received a message from Bralin Stoneminder saying he had received visions from Florin Jandeth requesting aid." He pauses a moment, knowing the distress that statement is likely to cause before continuing, "After talking to Cathbad and learning the situation here we came to offer whatever aid we can."

Brittanica introduces herself
"Well met. I am Brittanica Mundy, the newest member of the Shields. I joined right before we set off to provide you aid. I am a student of magic in both the Wizard and Bloodwitch traditions after a fashion being a Theurge I am both but yet I am kind of neither considering while my spell power has grown my individual abilities native to either discipline do not really advance though I can do things like use my unused bloodwitch spell slots to recast wizard spells I have prepared so it is a decent trade off in my humble opinion."

Brittanica says to Jandeth, "You ask how did we get here well Lady Cathbad let us borrow that gem that is tied to the Guardian Spirit that used to be your father. Technically she used it to get some of us here then immediatley returned so Bartomus could take the rest of us. I had wanted to try to Shadow Walk here as I could have brought all of us in one go of it but it was deemed to be too risky so we traveled by tree. You should consider using a feather token to create an Oak tree within the confines of the protection that the spirit offers that the druids could use rather than the Sequioas outside the range of protection that are being used. We had to fight multiple waves of plant creatures on our way in. I believe the Druid known as Murphy from Humbles Ford uses the feather token trick a lot to allow his group to travel great distances to places they have been before, but I digress. I must admit I have my own curiousity about the effects this place has on transportation magic and with your permission would like to make a study of it while I am here. Has anyone tried to cast a teleport spell within the confines of Elvengard without the gem? What happened to them?

DM MikeK - Rushing headlong into danger
Tuesday November 30th, 2021 8:37:23 AM

Stock, Bartomus, Ohen, Stohp, and Delia return the greetings of the elves.

Stock focuses on the Reeve, noting his direct nature and looking for any signs of tension in the man.
There is tension aplenty, Evandale's weary eyes and a slight slumping of his shoulders give away the elf is operating under great strain.

Zanderallen replies to Evandale's question. Tionel blinks in recognition of Bralin Stoneminder's name, and all three are shocked at the revelation of Florin Jandeth requesting aid.

Brittanica describes who she is, the elf's eyes glaze over as they attempt to follow.
She then describes how they arrived, which is met by slow nods.
She then offers a suggestion on how to improve that method, met by scowls.
She then asks for more detail on the teleportation effect, met by impatience.

Tionel was about to say something to Zanderallen, but by the time Brittanica has finished, he changes his mind and defers to Evandale.

The Reeve regards the mystic for a moment, takes a deep sigh, and indicates the chairs.
The trio sits, and Evandale tells his tale.

"For centuries, our town lived more or less in harmony with the Crying Wood through a ceremony called the Entwining. One of our own would merge their soul with that of the Crying Wood, creating a symbiotic relationship, which resulted in the town and its citizens being regarded as members of the Wood.

The last Entwining ceremony took place twenty odd years ago. My sister was privileged to be our guardian. An adventuring group (he indicates Tionel) attended, including the paladin Florin Jandeth. The ceremony was attacked by a group calling themselves Darkwood Druids. My sister was killed seconds before the Entwining Ceremony concluded. Florin Jandeth rushed to take her place, and successfully joined with the Crying Wood.

All was well, until the Sargrass Event. The Crying Wood changed. It grew stronger, and the symbiotic relationship we enjoyed shattered. Florin is no longer entwined with the Wood, but rather exists as a split personality within it. He is concentrating all his power on our village, creating a haven free of the Crying Wood's emnity.

The gem we use is a focal point. Florin recognizes it, and lends his power to transport spells cast with it as a focus. I imagine it would work with any transport spell, but our most powerful townsfolk are druids, and thus we use druidic spells.

Until a week ago, the tree was within the boundaries of the town.
We can create a new one, as you say.
But the tree is not the true problem.
The problem is Florin's strength is falling.
Unless we find a way to help him, the Crying Wood will soon overpower him and consume the town."

Bartomus listened to the explanation of the challenge facing the elvish community they were visiting. He looked about again and tried to get a sense of how the entwining occurred and where did it occur.

"Excuse me, but is it fair to assume that the ceremony took place some place other than the village? You mentioned that there was an adventuring group, very sorry to hear about your sister, that got attacked. That didn't happen here in the town, right?"

He first kept his gaze on Evendale and then turned to look at the other elf, Tionel.

"Certainly the whole Crying Wood changed with the Sargrass event. It strengthened here but disappeared elsewhere. I hate to be the blunt one...but I'm the blunt one. Have you considered moving your settlement elsewhere? It's a big Wold out there and most of it isn't surrounded by evil forest.

Do you have a way to directly communicate with Florin? Or are these just observations you've made of changes?

Do you have a way of travelling through the Wood without being ambushed every other step?

Have you been able to hypothesize any ways to bolster the protection of your city?"

Zanderallen gasps in shock at hearing the teleportation tree was in safety bubble a week ago. For the Crying Wood to have pushed so hard so fast, how was Florin supposed to hold back an entity with that much malice?

"I apologize if this question is out of line but please indulge me. What is the Crying Wood? You say the practice has been for someone to sacrifice themselves to the Crying Wood to trick it into letting you live here. What if someone could put an end to malice and hate for good? You've lived alongside it for longer so please correct me if I'm wrong but the malice of the Crying Woods does not seem like a good thing.", Zander pays extremely close attention to the reaction to his questions.

DM MikeK - Twenty questions
Wednesday December 1st, 2021 8:49:05 AM

After Evandale's explanation, the Shields have a lot of questions.

Bartomus asks where the Entwining Ceremony took place.
"A pyramid stands within a clearing some distance from here," Evandale answers. "The ceremony takes place on top of the pyramid, and that is where the attack took place."

The taur keeps focused on Tionel, but sees nothing alarming.

Stock asks why the elves don't just go someplace else.
"It may come to that," Evandale answers. "But...."
"NO" Jella interjects forcefully. "Leaving Elvengard means leaving my father. I will not do that. If he called out, there must be a way. We must find a way."

Stock asks some more questions.
Jella answers the first. "We can't speak directly with my father. I can feel him, though. I can feel him struggling."
Evandale adds, "Jella's connection along with our own observations tell us Florin is fighting, and weakening.

"We have a few beetles left we use to travel the Wood without detection."

Tionel answers the last. "Florin is our best bet to protect the city. Through his connection to Jella, and now apparently reaching out to Bralin, we are getting indications he is looking for help. I have to assume if there wasn't a way to do that, he'd be pushing Jella, toward, uh, a different alternative."

To Zanderallen, Evandale answers, "We did not trick the Crying Wood so much as co-exist with it. Our ancestors came to this place escaping from the minions of the green dragon. What safer place than within an entire forest bent on the exclusion of outsiders? And the person entwined with the Wood lives on. Those closest to them can feel their presence all their waking lives. As for ending the malice and evil, if you know how, by all means do so."

Delia asks about the Darkwood Druids.
"We haven't seen them since the attack," Tionel answers. "If they were still in the Wood after the Sargrass Event, well, good riddance I say."

Ohen and Brittanica focus on the nature of the force contending with Florin.

"The Crying Wood is everywhere," Tionel answers. "I think its a Power, similar to Culverwood, but meaner."
He pauses.
"I'd never considered the possibility that there might be more than two spirits entwined - the Crying Wood and Florin."
Tionel's eyes drift as he starts getting lost in that train of thought.

Meanwhile, Jella latches onto Brittanica's final comment.
"Repair the fracture. Retwine the souls. If father reintegrated with the Wood, rather than having to fight it....that could work."

Brittanica comes to much the same conclusion.
Any magic performed once should, theoretically, be able to be performed again.

"So, we get to ride the big beetles? Now that sounds like fun." Bartomus said with a bit of childlike excitement.

He went silent and listened to the rest of the discussion as he contemplated whether riding a beetle was anything at all like riding a turtle. He followed the conversation and looked a bit puzzled as it seemed that there was a need to do a rebinding.

"So if we get the right druids to the pyramid, they can perform the entwining spell again and that works to save this community?"

Zanderallen (Zachary H) 97/119 AC: 30 T: 13 FF: 30 CMD: 24

Zanderallen follows along with the questions and answers, some of them beyond his full understanding. He nods at Bart, "It sounds like that might work. Get to the pyramid and try to re-entwine Florin with the Crying Wood. The Sargrass event may have simply shaken the entwining apart. Evandale, Jella do you think under our escort that is possible?"

He muses on ending the Crying Wood. Somewhere there must be a heart or a locust of power, but that was probably for a different day. The Entwining seemed to be the best solution for the current situation.

Much as she tries, Delia's eye glaze over for much of the magical conversation, but she understands enough to have a few questions, "Do we know that fixing the Entwining won't take another sacrifice, er... guardian to repair? And if it does, are we willing to take that loss?"

I know it is asking a lot but I'm trying to figure out if this is something your people would be doing or our people. I'm not sure when we came out here if becomming one with the Crying Wood was something any of us signed up for."

"Do you have any writings detailing the ritual? Perhaps because Florin Jandeth yet exists in some form a new sacrifice isn't needed or there is a way to modify the ritual so that in this case it isn't needed?"

She thinks on what she knows concerning rituals in general.

Thursday December 2nd, 2021 8:44:14 AM

Most of the Shields land on traveling to the pyramid and performing the Entwining ceremony again in an attempt to reintegrate Florin with the Crying Wood.

Bart thinks about riding beetles.

The elf trio have no issues returning to the pyramid, but appear dubious about the prospects of the plan.

"We have not been to the pyramid since Florin," Tionel answers Stock. "But, checking it out might be worthwhile."

Evandale answers some of the other questions.
"We have no writings of the ceremony. It is an incantation passed from Reeve to Reeve. But, to be Entwined requires a corporeal body. The Chosen lies upon the altar. The incantation is spoken. Then the Chosen becomes Entwined, and the previous person is returned to corporeal form - a body, which we then bury. Without Florin's corporeal form, I don't know how we would repeat the process."

Brittanica asks Jella if she'd be willing to become the sacrifice, taking Florin's place.

The stunned looks on the three elves make clear none of them had thought of that. Their stunned visages turn troubled as each considers the implications of the request.

"I..." Jella begins.

"We shall think on that," Evandale cuts her off. He faces Jella.
"Take the evening to meditate. Think on what is being asked, and answer in the morning."

He turns to the party.
"Regardless of Jella's decision, we will have the beetles ready in the morning for your use."

Mediate as you must, but there must be other options on the table. I think visiting the ritual site may give us some paths forward. Something else may be going on. Thank you for the use of the beetles."

Once the party is alone Zanderallen talks of plans, "Looks like we get an evening to rest and prepare. Like Stock said the Crying Wood will probably not react positively to us poking around and I'm wondering if there's a chance the Darkwood Druids may have damaged the ritual site. I don't think any of us signed up to be one with the Culverwood when we came out here and everyone else we spoke to was considering relocating the city but Jella would not. I am a student of magic and one of the things about magic is you need to be precise. If the only way to fix what is broken is to perform the ritual then someone has to be the sacrifice. She obviously feels strongly about this place so from their side she would make the best candidate. From our side I personally think I would be a poor choice. I have much work left to do and I do not think I could do it as an incorporeal forest-spirit thing. For the one thing how am I supposed to publish my research or teach classes in that form? It simply will not do. As for candidates from our group perhaps a certain Dragon Blooded Sorcerer would be a better option. I mean with sorcerers the magic is just innate so I imagine channeling the Crying Wood would be similar to channeling the magic in their dragon blood, though I wonder if their might be a conflict. Do they make a type of sorcerer who had some sort of plant creature in their family tree? That might be the best choice if we are going with a sorcerer, then again dragons are long lived..."

Stohp has strong opinions on the subject and voices them. "It's stupid to sacrifice someone's life just to keep a place settled. The orginal sacrifice made sense, because it was the only option to keep the townsfolk alive, but now there are other, better options.

Lets investigate the pyramid and see what we can learn. If possible we'll strengthen the spell for the person already entwined. But if it is not possible for the already entwined to calm the forest and make things safe again then it's foolish to sacrifice a life just to delay the problem to a later time when everyone can just leave the area and settle somewhere without insanely murderously plant life."

She thanks Zander for the healing.

DM MikeK - We'll have to be ready
Monday December 6th, 2021 8:34:02 AM

Discussions continue.

Stock asks if the pyramid was built by dwarves.
Evandale shakes his head. "Neither dwarves nor elves. We have no idea."

Bartomus asks about the beetles.
"I've not seen beetle attack plant creatures," Jella answers. "But the plants don't attack the beetles either. They've some kind of adaptation that allows them, and anything on them, to travel unhindered."

Zanderallen cures Stohp.

Ohen asks some questions around the entwining.
Evandale shrugs. "There have only been three since we arrived, and my father in law conducted them all. He died a few years ago, and the next falls to me. I don't really know how we tell its time. I'm told there will be a sign.
Florin Jandeth is human."

Jella looks down.
"I'm adopted," she clarifies.

To Ohen's remaining question, Evandale looks skyward and then responds.
"We have a few months, I suspect, before Florin is overpowered."

There is also some sniping about Brittanica's suggestion.

Ultimately, the group decides to take the beetles to investigate the pyramid, and see what can be discovered there.

Brittanica gives more thought to ritual itself.
It is possible, she considers, that this ritual is not unlike the reverse of several she knows that seperate a person from a captive entity or plane.
And in those cases, sometimes the spell was performed using an object of deep personal connection rather than an actual body.

The Shields are escorted to quarters for the evening.
Evandale, Tionel, and Jella bid the party good night.

Please record any preparations, such as spell lists, for the morning

Stock Spends his prep time cleaning his flail. Removing the plant guts from the barbs on it is surprisingly tedious. He then wanders along the extent of Elvengard's protections, scanning the forest.

Bartomus found the place he was told to sleep and enjoyed the fact that he was sleeping high up in a giant tree. When morning came, he wandered about and found a place to undertake his daily meditations. He gave a good deal of thought to the day ahead and asked for guidance on the dream he had had the night before filled with dropping flames, rising stony spikes, and plants snaring other plants. His meditations gave him additional thought as to how to make those things he dreamt about happen. He made his peace with his inspiration, Eberyon and called upon the fey court to be helpful in the Shield's efforts.

Here's the spell list I came up with 6th-3rd
Fireseed, 6th
Stoneskin, Cure Mass, 5th
Ice Storm, Call Lightning, Flame Strike, Spike Stones 4th
Call Lightning, CMW, Snare, Flaming Sphere -3rd

Apologizing and asking for the same aid in the morning. With his gear off and cleaned his settles in for rest. He is up early in the morning, praying to Domi he prepares for the threat of poison. He is fully ready almost before the sun comes up over the horizon.

Brittanica tells the others, "We might actually not need to sacrifice anyone. Stohp is right. Apparently if it is similar to other rituals I've studied the body can be replaced with an object of personal significance. Perhaps Jella has something of Florin's that fits the bill that we could take to the site and put in ritual compartment in lieu of a new candidate?"

Brittanica scrawls the following note and gives it to the elf that escorted her to her quarters. She gives the elf a gold coin and says, "Make sure Jella gets this message":

Jella,

I'm sorry I asked you to make a sacrifice I myself am not willing to make. I had no right to do that and sometimes I forget I'm not in the lab anymore discussing magical theory. Anyway, I've been thinking about ritual magic and I think in order to repair the entwining we might not need to sacrifice anyone. If the ritual is like other magic I am aware of we might be able to replace a body with an object of personal significance. Do you have anything of Florin's left that he treasured or cared much about? Perhaps if the ritual was attempted using that object in place of a noble race sacrifice that the entwining may be repaired without anyone having to die. I hope this helps us to fix the problem with the Crying Wood.

Sincerely,
Brittanica Mundy

Grand Mage

After that is done Brittanica spends her customary 4 hours in the fast forge putting in another 2 days work on her amulet of natural armor putting her at 12 out of 18 crafting days complete.

She takes her customary shortened rest thanks to her ring of sustenance and thinks on a lot of things.

The next day she prepares the following wizard spells:
0th: Toros Taur Try, Read Magic, Acid Splash, Detect Poison
1st: magic missile (takes 2 slots) , mage armor, shield, grease, reduce person + feather fall
2nd: acid arrow, glitterdust, false life, Owl's Wisdom, flaming sphere (2 slots) + pyrotechnics
3rd:summon monster III, arcane sight, fireball(takes 2 slots), slow + haste
4th:summon monster IV, black tentacles, ennervation, dimension door + elemental body 1
5th:summon monster V, telekinesis+ overland flight

She then uses her spirit cauldron to contact the 'Arrys and perform her ritual of Warding without the bonus they provide in person. (OOC: all other cauldrons within 50 meters of Britannica vibrate)

She casts Toros Taur Try and Owl's Wisdom giving her a cumulative +4 to her survival role for the ritual

Survival Check: 36 vs 20 = success; +1 to AC and Saving Throws

Immediately before heading out she casts the following spells on herself:
Mage Armor - 9 hours; +4 AC
Overland Flight - 9 hours; 40 foot fly speed (good) +4 bonus to Fly Checks; Can hustle
Threefold Aspect - 24 hours; +2 Dex; +2 Con; -2 Wis; Brittanica appears as a young adult maiden
Barkskin - 100 minutes; + 4 natural armor to AC

If they are truly setting off for the day and are on the trail she will add Prying Eyes to the list giving the same instructions she did last time "scatter, fly out as far as you can while maintaining a visual on me. Keep pace with the group. Tell me of any threats"

Prying Eyes - 10 hours; 12 semitangible, visible magical orbs (called “eyes”) that move out, scout around, and return as you direct them when casting the spell. Each eye can see 120 feet (normal vision only) in all directions;

DM MikeK - Could you help me with this armor?
Tuesday December 7th, 2021 8:39:31 AM

Brittinica scrawls a note to Jella, and then the Shields turn to evening preparations.

Armor and weapons are cleaned, meditiation and sleep taken, and some wandering around of the premises taken.

In the morning, the group are escorted back to the base of the tree.

Stohp finds that after a good sleep, she is no longer Shaken.

Jella and Evandale are waiting, along with three enormous beetles, each sporting an elf 'driver'.
The beetles are black, with forest green colorations.
Other than they are big enough to carry six (medium sized) people, there's nothing all that special looking about them.

Jella rushes over, and takes Brittanica by the hand.
"Thank you for your note," she rushes. "I was thinking on it all night, and felt Father's presence, and an image. A silver bracelet, fashioned as three entwining cords."

Evandale nods.
"A gift from my sister to the adventurers for agreeing to stand with us during the entwining. Florin accepted for the group."

With that, the party is ready to move out.

They split up onto the beetles, along with Evandale, Jella, and the three drivers.

Brittanica sends out her Prying Eyes.

And the group is off.

DM MikeK - It keeps the forest from murdering you horribly
Wednesday December 8th, 2021 8:23:51 AM

The Shields have differing opinions about riding giant beetles through the middle of the Crying Woods.

Stock makes very sure he's with the lead beetle, and remains hyper vigilant.

Bartomus is a kid in a candy store.

Zanderallen, Owen, and Delia are businesslike.

Brittanica asks whether she could simply fly rather than ride the beetle.
Stohp is quick to answer, "Stay on the beetle. It keeps the forest from murdering you horribly, but only if you're on it."

Evandale nods along with the taur's statement.
"Neither the Wood, nor the plant creatures, detect the beetles or those in contact with the beetles. If you fly, you will be detected."

Evandale indicates he knows the ritual, answering another of the mystic's questions.

The group sets off, and Brittanica quickly deduces she can easily keep up with the beetles if she flies.

The question is, does she?

Stock hums a dwarven marching song as they ride. It is low pitched and sounds almost like soft humming broken up by sharp consonant sounds.

Bartomus listened to the tune Stock worked on while they continued their ride on the beetles. When that song ended, he vocally stepped into the silence of the circle. Bartomus began humming a song that the riders that had originally adopted him would sing. The song was about traveling with a group of friends and exploring new places while creating new songs and such. He tried keeping an eye out on the forest, and for the most part, didn't completely lose himself in the mental memory lane the song brought him on.

DM MikeK - Has anyone studied this phenomenom in depth before?
Thursday December 9th, 2021 8:58:29 AM

Both Brittanica and Hawky remain grounded on the beetles.

Brittanica asks about in-depth studies on the beetle's ability to evade the woods.

Stohp offers a suggestion.
Ohen rolls his eyes.
Evandale shakes his head.
Jella sighs.

"There have been attempts," she replies. "Most recently a noble from the float captured and dissected as many as he could find, kidnapped me, and had some crazy halfling botanist perform your in depth study."

She shudders at the memory, then brightens.

"Thats how I met most of your companions.
At Elvenguard, we do not perform experiments on the beetle's abilities. We simply accept they exist."

The journey takes most of the morning.
Occasionally, a Prying Eye will return to Brittanica to report on encountering one plant creature or another.
But, nothing shows up to threaten the small convoy.

Brittanica attempts to discern more about the beetle's ability. But, so far as she can tell, its not doing anything. Whatever it is, appears to be innate.

The progression of beetles through the woods makes a good deal of noise. The forest is filled with the crunch and break of trees and greenery as they eat their way through the woods. The elves themselves make their share of noise, chatting, at ease, as though this were a picnic.
Plus, there is the odd duet between Stock and Bartomus.
And yet, within the great and terrible Crying Woods, nothing attacks.

The journey takes the entire morning. It's difficult to tell because the thick canopy of trees above allow no view of the sky, but it is near noon when through the trees ahead a bright light can be seen.

Occasionally, a Prying Eye will return to Brittanica to report on encountering one plant creature or another.
But, nothing shows up to threaten the small convoy.

The trio of beetles emerge from the woods and into the light. An enormous clearing stretches out before. Broad avenues converge, from the four cardinal points of the compass, upon a giant stone pyramid. Each of the broad avenues meets the pyramid at a set of stairs, equally as wide as the avenue and ascends to a height of fifty feet. Between the radiating avenues lie the rubble of what once might have been buildings. The rubble, the roads, as well as the pyramid itself is formed from blocks of a pale grainy sandstone that paints images of dry sunbaked plains, a sharp contrast to the dark and brooding Crying Woods. In the blocks that are intact can be seen designs of large whirling concentric circles.

Evandale and Jella dismount, and indicate for the Shields to do the same.

Bartomus looked about as they left the forest and rode into the giant clearing with the pyramid in the center of it. He found his eyes and his mind bouncing from the different aspects that he was seeing and particularly the circles carved within the sandstone blocks of the pyramid and the rubble that was extending in every direction.

"Was this a giant city then? Who use to live here and when did they leave?" Bartomus asked as he dismounted from the beetle. He turned and looked at the giant creature and patted its hard surface and expressed quietly his thanks for a wonderful ride.

"Where exactly did the last attackers come from when the former entwining didn't go as expected?" He added to his earlier questions and tried to think as to whether anything within the Guild's library might have mentioned a giant city here.

Zanderallen shudders at the remembrance of the noble in question, a moment of sadness for the friends lost to his murderous hand. Unfortunately the presence of the Woods makes it easy to stay in such a brooding state. He instead distracts himself with asking Jella how things have been and catching up with her and sharing the Shield's adventures.

When the pyramid comes into view he stares in awe. Looking carefully around he gingerly dismounts from the beetle. "As much as I'm sure some of us would love to investigate further we should probably get moving towards the top. This place might be safer but from what the last entwining showed, safer is a very relative term in the Crying Woods."

If someone could cover themselves in flora similar to what beetle's possess or build a craft that is covered in it perhaps they too could move around the Crying Wood unmolested if Stohp's theory is correct. I mean if it isn't the plantlife as Stohp suggested than whatever it is it is innate to the beetle but rest assured I won't go so far as to dissect one and offend your sensibilities to learn more as some mysteries are meant to be left unsolved...Unless did this crazy halfling biologist leave any papers behind? DM MikeK - We may want to keep moving here
Friday December 10th, 2021 9:02:51 AM

It has been four hours since the party left Elvengard.
In that time, six of Brittanica's twelve Prying Eyes returned with visions of plant monsters, but the party traveled unmolested.

In spite of Stohp's insistance that a plant fungus is the reason for the beetle's Wood immunity, Brittanica finds no trace of such a thing on the beetle's exterior.

She asks about the halfling biologists papers, and Jella shrugs.
"After the Shields rescued me, the Crying Wood destroyed the complex where I was held. I've no idea what became of the halfling."

The appearance of the ruins and the pyramid, as well as the instruction to dismount from the beetles, brings another round of questions and concerns.

Brittanica thinks of what she knows of the area, but comes up empty.

Multiple Shields wonder about plant attacks, but find upon dismounting from the beetles that the Crying Wood cannot be felt.

Evandale shrugs again at questions regarding the ruins.
"It is as it was when we first came, centuries ago. Whoever built it have been gone for a very long time."

Bartomus asks where the attacks came from during the last Entwining.
Evandale answers, "From the surrounding woodline at first, then earth elementals from the ground, and finally a gigantic earth elemental from the interior of the pyramid itself."

In response to Ohen, the elf shakes his head.
"The plants don't come in here. We were attacked by people and elementals."

At Zanderallen's suggestion, the group moves down one of the wide boulevards, and arrive at the base of the pyramid.
It is not a true pyramid, as the top, fifty feet above them, is flat (think Mayan rather than Egyptian).
A set of stairs climb to the top.
Both Evandale and Jella start to climb.

He continued to scan about as they made their way to the base of the tall pyramid and he took a moment or two to look at the structure. He looked over at Zander and Micah and asked, "Hurry to the top and then defend them while they do their thing? Try to spread out as we have four ways to come at us from the ground not counting what could come at us from the air?"

He followed their lead watching his step as he climbed the stairs.

Zanderallen is a little wary about the great interest in the beetles, remembering where that line of research went last time. But he shares what he knows, "The halfling, Briadoc, now resides with the Beastfolk where he is putting his talents to better use in discovering new crops to grow in the woods. As Jellah said, at the time the Shields felt like the research was dangerous and unethical so we left it for the woods to destroy."

Viewing the pyramid Zander makes a tactical call, "I think most of us should be at the top. Those who feel they can be of more use in secondary vantage positions should do so but if something is going to try and stop the ritual it's going to have to get to the top of the pyramid, so that's what we need to defend." He moves alongside Evandale and Jella, opening his divine sense to scan the area now that the presence of the Crying Woods is no upon them.

Stock and Ohen ask about the ceremony.
"The full Entwining takes about an hour" Evandale answers. "Although the crucial part lasts only a few minutes. And, I'm not sure how long it will take in this case. The last Entwining was attacked by a group calling itself the Darkwood Druids. They seemed to be humans that worshipped the Crying Wood, and wanted to rid the Wood of all people while also wanting to live in the woods themselves. I never understood the dichotomy."

Bart considers the pyramid, and realizes that while the composition is different, it, and the surrounding area, remind him a bit of the beastfolk's ziggeraut.

But the hawk is circling the top of the pyramid, to which Brittanica does not yet have line of sight.

That being said, the entire pyramid appears to have a magical aura.

The Shields stand by, 20' below the top of the pyramid, waiting for Hawky's report.
None can see anything amiss above them.

However, once she lands on Delia, she neither trills nor bobs her head.
Hawky cocks her head at Delia, and gives the 'found something' screech again.
Which is quite the earful at point blank range.

Having interpreted Hawky's response as 'no immediate threat', the party climbs (or flies) to the top of the pyramid.

The top is a flat area, 40' square.
In the middle is a solid looking stone slab, 5' high, 5' long, and 2' wide.

Of more interest is an enormous hole at the intersection of the top and the north face of the pyramid (opposite the party. Weeds, moss, and grasses grow in and around the eroded opening. The hole has been there for many years.

Evandale nods. "I remember. The last elemental erupted out of the pyramid itself."

Brittanica aims her Detect Magic spell down the hole.
Again, the pyramid is radiating magic. It does not appear that the hole itself is magical.

Still looking down the hole curiously, Delia asks, "Recon is always useful. But did the bracelet go missing or was it just not brought? It's not a very long trip, so establishing a presence here before attempting a ritual that miscellaneous jerks might want to interrupt isn't a bad thing."

"I was under the impression we brought the bracelet along. Was I incorrect?"

"The hope was that there'd be some obvious sign as to what's causing the weakening of the previous entwinning. Some change to the pyramid or group that was causing trouble." Stohp peers down the hole, careful not to fall in. She gets a torch or something and drops it in so as to see if anything is illuminated, like a chamber or tunnel the hole passes through (perception 18)

"Does anyone know if there are chambers inside the pyramid? If there is evidence of tampering it might be inside. The missing bracelet indicates someone or something moved it, which is good because if something caused the problem we can stop them and fix it."

At hearing we are missing the bracelet, Stock snorts. "Don't tell me you dropped it on the way!

By the way, this hole is pretty deep. I remember seeing a trick once upon a time where a wizard lit up a stone and dropped it in a well to show how deep it went. Can either of you do that?"
, he says looking at Ohen and Brittanica.

Zanderallen kind of growls at those pressing Jellah with such pointed questions and speaks up, "Seems like Florin needs us to find the bracelet. I wonder if the Crying Wood Druids could have taken it to try and break down the Entwining?"

After Stohp finishes examining the hole she looks around for other possible entrances to the pyramid.

Stock looks at the more magical party members and then drops a loose, not lit up rock down the opening and listens closely for it to hit bottom
