Spiders at the end it all

DM Mitch/The Twins 43/43
Wednesday December 8th, 2021 8:05:52 AM

The party is ready. Honor says the name “Jancasis”

On saying the name ‘Jancassis’ aloud, the shadows become still, forming a solid black door that is easily opened.

The layout of this area is like that of a spider

In the center is a sacrificial slab. Manacles are attached at the top and bottom to secure the unlucky subjects hands and feet. The natural color of the stone has darkened, no doubt from copious amounts of blood.
Pacing on the other side of the slab stands a woman. Sort of. Eight spindly spider legs, flocked with coarse black hairs, stretch from the back of this otherwise beautiful black-haired woman.

“You are not what I was expecting” she says with a hint of a grin.

Standing behind the matriarch, with head bowed stands ghostly Mya.

“It seems one of my children has been very naughty. Didn’t I tell you not to talk to strangers, Mya? I’ll have to consider a suitable punishment for you”

SteveM - Elron | AC 21 (19 if raging), HP 49/49  d20+8=16 ; d4+2=3 ;
Wednesday December 8th, 2021 5:22:36 PM

Actions depend on the size of the place:

If the spiderlady can be reached within 40' of movement from where he starts, and despite his superstitious nature, Elron hastens to the attack. He tries not to wonder if she's starved to death and become a ghost, and becomes enraged himself as he moves. Since she doesn't look like a ghost, he tries to hit with his whappin' stick. He hits AC 16 for 3 points of damage.
Rage 1/10

If the spiderlady cannot be reached within 40' of movement, Elron moves to or begins to move to a position about 40' away from her. And he maintains some distance from the others, to minimize her potential use of spells.
Rage 0/10

Asimov and Irony | Hugh | AC 17/13/15 HP 45/45 | AC 18/11 + 4 vs incorporeal touch/17 HP 35/35 Hardness 2
Wednesday December 8th, 2021 9:32:33 PM

Asimov takes in the fact that the spider-woman considers the ghosts her children and sees Mya as being naughty and wonders if she has some pull over the ghosts.

In case she does Asimov activates his personal force field which should nominally give him better protection against the ghosts than his armor.

Asimov tells Irony to advance towards the spider lady as the mechanical minion does not have any ranged attack options. The construct advances 2 moves of 20 feet toward the spider lady.

Mundhildur says as she moves forward, "What then is naughty, compared to your vile wickedness, you murderer?" then hurls one of her long spears directly at the arachnid matriarch, striking AC 27 for 10 hp piercing damage. [This is her non-magical longspear, the blade of which she recently sharpened, granting a +1 for one attack.]

The giantess pulls forth her magical spear from the magical quiver to have it at ready.

(I’ll make a map over the weekend. We’ll say she started exactly 40 feet from the entrance)

The party ignores the matriarch’s attempt at conversation and charge, but she had a prepared action to cast a spell at the first sign of hostility. As soon as Elron starts his charge she blast him with a lightning bolt, causing 23 damage (reflex save 17 for half)

Elron completes his charge but doesn’t manage to hit the agile spider creature.
Asimov goes defensive and sends Irony in.
Honor advances
Zeoll summons help. Camel advances.
Mundhildur hurls a spear and lands a direct hit!

The matriarch seems unsurprised by the parties actions and unconcerned at the hit she took. Laughing maniacally, she circles the group, drawing AoOs from Elron, Irony, and Honor (camel got stuck behind them). She gives as good as she gets though as she lines them up to hit all three with another lightning bolt for 24 damage each (reflex save 17 to dodge)

(horribly rough map until weekend)

Zeoll summons 1d3 small air elementals. That's ... 2! Call them Alpha and Bravo.

Alpha and Bravo use their perfect flight 100 and flyby attacks to fly at the monster, swoop down (attacking from higher ground), slam into the matriarch thing, and then fly up and off. They end move up in the air and not near each other, so as not to be good lightning bolt targets if the enemy wants to get more than two targets. They hit AC9 and AC10!

Invisible Zeoll starts reading another scroll.

Elron attempts to strike the creature when she provides the unexpected opportunity, and misses (AC 9) with his whappin' stick.

Elron then closes with spiderlady again, and foregoes his normal flurry of blows to make a single unarmed attack using the scorpion style. . . He hits AC 22, doing 3 points of damage and limiting the creature's movement rate to 5' for 4 rounds unless she makes a DC 16 fortitude save.

Elron pursues the spider witch and triest slow her down but she twists and makes his precise strike miss the nerve cluster he was aiming for (made her save)
Asimov uses his gadgets to do solid damage but Irony misses the agile spider creature
Mundhildur wants to flank, but the layout of the map I just made prevents it (also, are you in large size right now? I assume so)
The Twins fire an arrow
Honor hits as the Matriarch flees but misses after she moves to catch up.

It looks like you’ve done a solid amount of damage to her but the Matriarch still seems confident and like she’s enjoying the battle. Her laughter rings through the chamber as she takes a 5 foot step back and declares ”You call that summoning?! This is how you summon!”

With a wave of her hand and a few spoken words the shadows swirl around the party before solidifying into solid shapes. Spiders. As tall as a human, fangs dripping with poison, they swarm into existence surrounding the melee fighters, blocking their ability to advance on the Matriarch.

Irony finishes off the spider Mundhildur hit and Asimov goes for another rocket (you can hit, but only if you move around to be in line of sight. Since that puts you in no danger I moved you)
The Twins miss the matrarch.

The spiders all press the attack. One manages to get Elron somewhere tender (crit for 7 damage), another catches Honor while she’s warding off the second behind her (4 damage). All of them take 5 foot steps to close ranks and keep the party stuck.

Honor and Elron find themselves affected by poison. It’s a DC 14 constitution save or take 1d2 strength damage. On a succes the poison is cleared from your body, otherwise it continues for 4 rounds.

With the melee fighters bogged down in spiders the Matriarch turns her attention to the ranged characters still pressing the attack. She casts blindness on Asimov and the Twins - DC 16 fortitude save or be struck blind until dispeled (literally, the duration just says ‘Permanent (D)’ O.o )

Asimov is not blinded. However he is out of wrist rockets and the rest of his devices are either for healing, damaging undead or require him to get too close for comfort so Asimov takes out his repeating crossbow.

Irony attempts to slam into Spider 6 but misses.

Asimov and Irony both miss their targets.
Elron feels cocky but misses
Mundhildur stabs and throws a stone. She wants to hit the matriarch, but has no line of sight since she’s 10 feet around a corner so ends up squishing a spider instead.
Honor kills a spider with a single blow
Zeoll tries to shuffle around to get in a healing spot and his elementals finish two more spiders

The matriarch sees her defensive wall of spiders going down and repeats the incantation she used to summon them. This time though a single, gargantuan spider forms out of the shadows looming over the party while a single medium one forms between her and Honor.

(Reflex save = 28, Elron escapes the lightning bolt; Fort save = 24, Elron eeks by with no strength damage -- however, a 27 HP bite seems plenty to worry about)

Elron doesn't know what it takes to hit the gargantuan spider, and doesn't think he can get close enough to attack it without too much risk. He feels hemmed in, and can't go for a potion without risking an attack either.

He decides to ready an action contingent on the big spider's action -- if it attacks Honor, he will defend her; and if it attacks him, he will defend himself. (If it is not possible to ready in this manner, he will simply defend Honor so she can pursue the Matriarch.) Defending Honor: Aid Another, succeed at hitting AC 10 in order to provide Honor a +2 AC bonus against the gargantuan spider. Defending himself: Total defense, +4 dodge bonus in lieu of his normal +1 dodge bonus, increasing his AC to 22 while raging.

"Pull Honor and yourself out of the way, Zeoll! You too, Elron!" Mundhildur yells. She does not quite understand how they figure it's been a good idea to stand directly in the path of three lightning bolts - though she is about to place herself in said path.

She moves forward (W17, also covering W16, X16, and making sure she does not step on Honor at X17), and sings at the spidery Matriarch, "You . Need . To . Go . To . The . Place . Of . Perdition!" the final word of which she heroically punctuates by hurling a stone at the wicked manipulator, hitting AC 29 and doing 19 hp bludgeoning damage to her.

Mundhildur tells people to stop standing around in a line before moving up to hit the Matriarch.
The Twins move up for an angle on the matriarch and shoot at her.

The Matriarch finally loses her confident attitude and snarls at the giant as she’s pinned into her corner. She quickly casts blindness on Mundhildur and on Honor - both must make a DC 16 fort save or be blinded.

The giant spider goes for the nearest threat, in this case one of the air elementals, critting and dispersing it.

Zeoll sends his two remaining elementals to help his friends fight the Matriarch.

Air Elemental Alpha flanks with Mundhi and Aids Another on her attack. Roll to Aid Another is a 15, so that's a +2 on Mundhi's attacks and a +4 on the first one. If the DM is very nice, that means Mundhi's first attack, of a 19, becomes a 23, enough to hit!

Air Elemental Bravo offers the same benefit to Irony if it attacks the big spider. +2 to all attacks flanking, and +2 to hit on the first attack (+4 total on the first attack).

And remember to add +1 to hit and damage with Zeoll's singing.

As for Zeoll, he backs off five ft and uses his new 5th level Greensinger Ability!

Fey Friend: As a spell-like ability, you use Planar Ally spells to call fey folk and magical beasts. This SLA takes one full round of singing to activate; there is no gold cost; and the duration is one minute per character level. The creature only appears if it likes your song: make a Perform (Sing) check vs DC20 + HD called. At level 5, use as Lesser Planar Ally, 1/day; at level 10, up to Planar Ally, 2/day; at level 15, up to Greater Planar Ally, 3/day.

Zeoll spends the round singing. I'll roll to see what I get next post.

Grateful for the aid of the air elementals, yet sadly her first slam attempt had her instead bashing against the wall. Danged narrow space! [nat 1]. Her next two attacks were progressively closer to the mark, but none quite enough (AC 17, 19). Her reflexes at the moment of the lightning bolt were, however, spot-on (Reflex save 24 - nat 20, thus 18 hp damage).

"Stop moving so trickily!" she tells the Matriarch. "How many people did you end up sacrificing, by the way, in your quest for power?" she asks as she continues to attempt to end the life of this evil spider woman.

Kim edit: Corrected damage received from 17 to 18. Unless the two air elementals or others manage to do at least 15 hp of damage, in which case the lightning bolt will have failed

2nd edit (didn't change what's written above, just noting difference here): Her 2nd attack hit AC 19, her 3rd slam hit AC 21. 2d6+5 would be damage dice if AC 21 somehow works... if so, our DM may roll for Mundhi on that :-)

Elron steps back where the matriarch can see him, still raging. "Hey, bug-lady, get your popcorn ready, 'cause I'm gonna put on a show.! You seen my friends beatin' you and you seen us destroyin' your spiders. You ain't touched me with a bolt! See this stick? When I apply it to your backside in your house, remember it's all on account o' what you did t' those innocents!"

Attempted intimidation: +8 skill, +8 hero point, -4 as a smaller creature. . . +12 total. Rolled 27. This will leave the matriarch shaken for a round if her HD + wisdom bonus total to 17 or less (two rounds if 12 or less). A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Zeoll's calling is based on his singing check. It functions like lesser planar ally. Zeoll does not know the name of a creature to call, so he has no idea what will appear [OOC: Sorry, shoulda mentioned that yesterday. I forgot how the power works.]

Zeoll's sing check is a +13. He needs a roll in the 21-26 range. If he falls up to 4 short, he'll use a retroactive hero point. The check is a ... 28, sweet!

The creature that answers is a fey or magical creature with hit dice up to 6 hit dice. Whatever it is, Zeoll directs it to attack the matriarch, or if that's not possible for some reason, the big spider, or if it can, to heal his friends.

Zeoll is still singing, so everybody gets a +1 to hit and damage.

Finally, Zeoll's actual action for this round ... he backs off and casts produce flame. he tosses a flame at the big spider. he hits touch AC 8, but who knows, maybe that's a hit. If so, that's 12 fire damage.

OH WAIT Zeoll is invisible. That's a +2 to hit, and the spider loses its dex bonus. A ranged touch attack vs touch AC10, given the monster's size, may well hit!

But that ends the invisibility.

The two air elementals repeats the actions from last round, giving Mundhi +4 on her first attack, and +2 on the others.

She is glad Elron is there to help out. He does seem to look a little bit woozy, though. And Zeoll's encouraging song helps lift her up.

Then the wounded Jotun warrior grunts as the Matriarch's sword wears her down further. "Just fall down and die," she urges SpiderMother as her own first attack goes wide. In her second attack, she manages to give better than she got. Hit AC 24 for 16 hp damage. Her third try at slamming goes awry (nat 1).

Zeoll is still singing. [I've used like 10-11 rounds of 21 per day]

Bill the Camel leaps from the shadows and spits on the big spider! (Maybe he suffers an AoO coming in?)

The camel spits, hitting touch AC16! This sickens the big spider, and it suffers a -2 on attacks, damage, saves, and checks.

Zeoll throws a flame at the giant spider, hitting touch AC12 for 11 fire damage. (that's 3 of 5 flames from this spell).

Finally, the fey creature tries to blind the big spider. Fort Save 16, with a -2 penalty for being sickened.

Oh, and the spider is sickened for 1d4=4 rounds.

[OOC: Bill is AC13 with 24 hp]

Honor Bright [AC 19; HP 25/42] (Kathy)
Friday January 7th, 2022 9:30:56 PM

Blinded, Honor is effectively out of the fight. But she can get reinforcements. Well, one reinforcement anyway.

She begins summoning her paladin mount.

Neither Asimov nor Irony have a good way to get at the Matriarch as she is fighting with their friends in the corner so both keep up their attack on the spider. Both miss this round.

Elron manages to punch the spider lady in the face.
Mundhildur requests politely that the Matriarch die. The Matriarch obliges her - Mundhildur’s blow crushes her skull in.
Zeoll sings, throws fire, and has his minions apply debuffs.
Honor summons reinforcements
Asimov and Irony have no luck against the spider.
The Twins close in on the spider while it’s AoO is used up.

Bill the Camel’s approached is ill-fated. It strikes swiftly at his approached and drops the camel in a single blow (31 damage). It then goes for the Twins again but they continue to prove resilient to it’s attacks.

"Thanks, Elron." Mundhildur then hears a loud smack behind her, and sees poor Bill the Camel being knocked down violently. She switches her focus to the gargantuan spider. "I'm really getting to hate spiders," she says as she tries, without success, to damage this last assailant.

SteveM - Elron | AC 21 (19 if raging), HP 19/49
Monday January 10th, 2022 8:02:16 PM

"Told you so," Elron tells the dead spiderlady. Then he looks around to see how his friends are fairing against the giant spider.

He's got the same problem with the big thing as before -- closing on it. And it does a passle of damage with each attack, too. He decides to see if the spiderlady has any useful and clearly labelled trinkets that might come in handy right now, perhaps in a pouch.

Honor Bright [AC 19; HP 25/42] (Kathy)
Monday January 10th, 2022 9:35:34 PM

Justice, her paladin mount, appears next to her, and Honor mounts with some difficulty. She is a practiced horsewoman, but not being able to see makes the task more challenging.

"Hello, my friend," she says. "We need to vanquish that spider over there,"

Justice obligingly moves up to the spider, but can't attack yet because he had to wait for Honor to mount before he could move.

Mundhildur forms some strong opinions about spiders.
Elron digs for useful items. He doesn’t find anything useful, though she had one of those spiny stone things that floats around your head.
Honor mounts and approaches the spider.
Zeoll hits the spider in an eye for a lot of damage. The lurker is also successful.
Asimov heals Bill. Irony still has trouble hurting the spider.
The Twins also do a respectable chunk of damage.

The spider gets an attack of opportunity against Justice, sending the poor horse right back to the wherever it gets summoned from (30 to hit, 27 to damage). It also finally lands a hit on the Twins for over half their HP.

The Twins grimace as they're hit hard and note how tough everyone is having it closing in. Given how difficult it's been for the spider to hit them and how consistently it's hit everyone else they decide to risk drawing it's attention so everyone can close in rapidly and slay it.

They move back and forth in from of the spider, drawing it's AoO for this round. The spider misses them. They go for an attack of their own but fail to hit this time.

Honor tries for a soft landing when Justice disappears from under her, but she fails and falls prone in front of the spider, taking 5 damage.

So now she is prone, and blind, and in melee range of a giant spider trying its best to murder her. This isn't her best day ever.

Her chances of hitting the spider are vanishingly small, but hopefully it doesn't know that. From the ground, she makes a great show of swinging Virtue about, hoping it might help Irony hit the thing.

[Use the Aid Another action to help Irony's attack roll. Succeed with a 22, and I don't think the 50% miss chance for being blind factors in to Aid Another. Though, of course, that's the DM's call. :) But I think Irony gets +2 to hit the spider.]

Last round of Produce Flame: hits touch AC16 for 10 fire damage.

The Lurker backstabs the spider with two claws, flanking and inspired, hitting ACs 32 (nat 20 follows up with a 29, so a crit!), and a nat one, LOL!

The crit inflicts 2d3+2+3d6sa = 16 damage.

Bill the Camel spits at the Spider! He hits touch AC15, and the monster is sickened for 3 rounds. Sickened: -2 on attacks, damage, saves, and checks.

Then Bill lurches upright.

With the Twins drawing it's AoO everyone piles onto the spider and most manage to hit. They does a total of 48 damage, more then enough to finish the already weakened creature. It collapses and fades back into nothingness, leaving the party alone in the chamber.

"Courage, Honor," Mundhildur tells the valiant aasimar. She reaches down to help her stand again. "We will find a way to let you see again. I think she tried to blind me, too."

"I'm going to look at the murderer," she announces and walks over to the fallen Matriarch as she shrinks down to normal size (7'4"). She takes the sword. Not particularly aware that Elron already had searched, she goes over the bloodied body to see if there may be anything of use to the party.

"I wonder if she should burn her body on that altar she used to slay so many," the giantess says to her companions as she drags her out to the general area from the leg of the room she had gone into.
