After seeing too their normal day to day tasks the Shields gather together in the Giggling Ghost to have dinner. As they sit there the doors burst open. One of the residents of the Fence shouts out, "Happy did you hear? The Under Lord is retiring! That means a big election. And they are going to schedule it for this coming Mask Day which is not to far off. I need a drink."
Immediately the whole tavern is abuzz. Everyone begins talking about the need to get a sure fire mask.
Knowledge Local 10: Highlight to display spoiler: {Once a year, on Mask Day, the Underlord emerges to preside over the selection of 20 new Undercrats. These undercrats must serve 20 years in servicing the machines that keep the Floating city afloat. Custom is to select a mask that ensures the gods overlook you for the choosing.}
OOC I know some of you have 'started' looking for masks already but I need to retcon that a bit because there are things that happen when you actually start looking for masks. You may want to spend a little time in the tavern talking about politics or mask strategies with the peoples.

A patron slaps Stock on the shoulder. "Sure and if anyone could meet him twould be you heroes. Nah the likes o' us. He only comes up on mask day to lead the new ones down. Until he retires, then he gets replaced by the current Overlord. Don't think the current Overlord has been serving longer th'n 4 years. Heard tale there was one Underlord stayed down 31 years."
Another patron takes the opportunity to sit next to Ohen. "You're new here I can tell. Now unless you're livin' in the Trash level, or servin' time in prison, you wears a masks to divert the gods attention. Even with the stipend they give your family 20 years is a long time to be separated. My wife's been down there 10 years. My kid don't even remember her. Tant right." he grumbles.
OOC Note, the Float map is no where big enough. I've been informed that the city population is supposed to be the second largest city in the northern Wold. So it has to be around 50,000 people. In some respect then the 400 serving to keep the city afloat is a small portion of the population.

Brittanica and Stohp share all the local points. Bartomus mentions that masks for larger types certainly will take longer to craft. Stock wants no part of politics. Zanderallen wonders if anyone has refused to wear masks or serve. Delia corrects him in his assumptions as that would mean going against the will of the gods. Ohen - is appalled __ The man Ohen is talking to shakes his head. "Not enslaved. She's serving the will o' the gods, and it's for 20 years, she's just been down there 10 so far. Just hard ya know. Sometimes thing's don't seem fair. But fair don't mix in too often. Someone's got to keep the Float floatin'." Ohen probably still wonders about the will of the gods and the fairness of it all. The Float residents in the party can tell Ohen that 'breadwinners' in the family that get chosen will have their spouses receive a stipend from the city usually which is 3sp a day.
The Shields discuss politics and masks. Yes indeed there have been mirror masks in the past, even masks with many little mirrors (think disco ball). Who can say what works. Talk lasts into the evening and the party decides that maybe they should head home and get some rest so that they can get an early start on buying masks the next day.
Deus ex machina - advancing the time line to put you in shield HQ at it being morning.
Options for buying masks. There's a mask shop in every quarter of every level of the city. (so in theory then 20 mask shops). For convenience we're just going to call them north trash mask shop, south barracks mask shop, etc. Remember the city map
Now to make things interesting, the mask vendors while also craftsmen, don't sell all "20" masks in the same store. To make sure all things are equal masks are shared between different stores on different levels. Prices range on masks from 5 copper to 1 gold. This means that families wanting to get all the same mask, must often shop multiple levels and districts to find the right masks. That way if chosen the entire family will go down together.
So ... morning dawns ... or do you get up before the dawn to start shopping?

Brittanica has a ring of sustenance and as such only needs 2 hours of sleep however as a Transmuter she still needs 8 hours of uninterrupted rest in order to mentally prepare her spells for the next day as well as an hour to study her spell book so if possible she tries to get a jump on this early in order to be able to head out as early as possible the next morning to find her mirror mask.

Zanderallen mutters at the answers given, "Will of the gods is it? That doesn't sound like something Domi would sanction." He leaves the tavern in a little bit of a funk.
Waking the next morning he joins the others for breakfast. "Think we should all buy the same mask? That way one of us doesn't get picked away from the group?"
Either way the group decides Zander goes to find Pepper to ask if she wants to get the same mask if she's agreeable.

Ohen stands up sharply, knocking his chair on the ground. "Which gods exactly, are condemning mothers to not know their children? Surely not Alemi or Domi? There is no justice in it, so Pantheon would be against it." As Stohp explains that Flower oversees it. "Flower the Goddess of love is overseeing a ritual that tears apart families, so that the Underlord can keep his secrets? I don't believe it for a second." As Stohp tells Ohen that often families buy masks together so they aren't separhted. "Are you saying children can be chosen? Surely there are others more fit to control the city? This feels deeply wrong, and I want no part in it. I will not give 20 years of my life to some backwards city if I'm randomly chosen by an absurd lottery."
Ohen will not be shopping for a mask.

Britannica decides to look for a mirror mask. You need to state a sector where you are going. Stock goes to open air south to look for a mask. Stohp isn't concerned and has a good breakfast. Delia asks if the party is coordinating. Zanderallen also asks about coordinating, but is determined to coordinate with Pepper. Ohen refuses to buy a mask. Bartomus?
--- Anyone residing in the Float and present on Mask Day is subject to the laws of the city. Shield members are considered residing in the Shield HQ.
Near the Open Air South mask vendor Stock spots the line. In line he overhears a few people talking. There are two men talking ahead of Stock. One says, "I hear if you visit every temple while wearing your mask the week before the event and make a donation it shows your devotion and loyalty to the gods and you will not be chosen." The other replies "I have a lucky token and only wear that token on Mask Day. It was passed down to me from my father. No one in our immediate family has ever been chosen." A woman behind Stock chimes in, "I heard you should declare Wardd to be your patron. No known patron of Wardd has been chosen for 10 years."
Zanderallen goes to visit Pepper. He catches her running toward the paper. "Hi Zander. Yes I think we should go shopping together. Let me just get this story in. The candidates for Overlord have registered. There's Drezz Dinoryn, a surface Drow that owns an art studio and gallery called The Last Inspiration. Tenoch Keenhoof: a Minotaur and the Manager of the Diamond Midway. Lord Jonas Yeager, one of the current council members. Lord Marcus Rothchild another council member, and Lord Elric Storm a council member but running more as a member of the Star Mages Guild. Give me 20 minutes and then we can head to a store. Do you have a particular one in mind? Hey maybe we can run an article on what masks the Shield buy. The gods are sure to overlook you all as you're so important to the safety of the city."

Bartomus slept in, but not intentionally. When he did finally get up and get his act together, he headed out to the lifts in hopes of finding something that might be large enough for a Taur. As he stood at the lift, he looked at the list of floors and then smiled.
"Gold level it is." He stepped on and rode the lift upward until he reached the proper point and stepped off heading towards the northern side of that level. He wasn't sure what he was looking for in the way of a mask. Maybe a turtle? Or, could he pull off one of those sunset masks?

Stohp has never been one for tradition considering how Taur tradition was what drove her and her sister to run off years ago. She mostly enjoys mask day for the parties and doesn't bother to try to find any fancy mask, grabbing whatever is cheap and convenient.

Stock has a very clear image of the mask he seeks. One he had seen previously with a smile on one half and a crying frown on the other.
He mostly ignores the commentary around him. At one point just saying, "I'm not sure anything you do really matters. I've been here long enough to know the threat is real and always feels totally random as to who is "chosen". That said, I've never known anybody personally who has been chosen."

Delia shifts uncomfortably at Ohen's outburst, "Some of the families I knew prayed to Flower that one of them would be chosen because then they and their families would actually get to eat every day. And many orphans want to be chosen for the same reason. Though... it is cruel to split up families... But that's why many families try to buy the same masks, so they'll still be together. Maybe you could help some of them find all the masks they need."
She goes to Barracks North and tries to convince Ohen to come with her. Even if he doesn't want to buy a mask.

"What happens if someone else's mother is taken from them in this ceremony, like that man's daughter at the tavern? Would I be able to live with myself if I let them take her? Could I even stop them, if I wanted? Should I stop them? It is the will of the gods after all, supposedly.
"What if I'm chosen? I would not give twenty years of my life to this city that are then wiped away. I would teleport away in the sight of everyone, and it would reflect badly on the Shields, if they could tell it was me. It is better for everyone if I am a coward in private, rather than in public."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 139/139 AC: 30 T: 13 FF: 30 CMD: 24 Friday February 25th, 2022 2:48:54 PM "I've been feeling like a bit of a trouble maker recently, how do you feel about an imp mask?" Zanderallen just stays on the Merchant level where the publishing house is.
He considers the various candidates for Overlord, no one that surprising. He didn't really know what the Overlord did anyway, but he wouldn't mind if one of the more difficult council members were busy with other duties.
When asked about running a story Zanderallen looks pensive and tells Pepper they'll talk once she gets her other stories in. Once they're off, "Don't know how that would go over actually. One of our newer members, not from the Float, is a little "put off" by the tradition. He views it as slavery and questioning how it could possibly be the will of the gods. And honestly since he started asking questions I've come to ponder how a lottery to deprive people of self-determination could possibly be Domi's will. I don't think he's planning to wear a mask at all. Maybe it's time some things around here change. That is not official Shield statement, just my pondering."
(OOC: Asking about it because of Drezz. I remember the portal gates that contained the Float to the rest of the world were ret-conned to have never existed. But what was the status of the Surface Drow city again? Have we been there? Is it reached by boat and mountain climbing? Or was that whole adventure ret-conned to have never happened either? Thanks.)

Bartomus goes to gold level mask shopping. Brittanica goes to the merchant level mask shopping. Stohp is frugal when mask shopping. Stock opts for a simple when looking for a mask. Delia goes to barracks north to shop and give Ohen some reasons why people want to be chosen. Ohen walks with Delia. Zanderallen ponders.
OOC - Well Jerry ruled that the gate to plateau city still works just that the bit about every level having it's own 'working' gate is null. Not something I agree with but he and Cazyle created the city I guess they can ret-con what they want. So I'd say the gate works intermittently. Because of this the Drow people most likely teleport/or gate to the water's edge and then ship their goods to the city. Nothing says they can't have their own gates function that way. As to Drow in the city, we're have to retcon that. Jerry says the city is a population of 50,000. Honestly there's no way that you could reasonably know everyone in the city. It's entirely possible that some Drow stayed in the city when the interment problem with the gates started occurring. Could be function of the ancient tech/magic that keeps this top heavy city floating above the water.

Bartomus stands in line waiting to move forward. The person in front of him has fine if threadbare looking clothes. When he enters the shop Bartomus finds some monster masks. Makes sense that monsters might be seen as off putting. There's a werewolf, ogre mage, and bear's head at a shop the runs across. The threadbare young man steps to the vendor and asks, "Do you have a simple mask that stands out and draws attention?" The vendor nods, smiling vainly. "Aye, young Baldric I do. Still hoping to get chosen eh?"
Brittanica see's someone on a platform near the vendor making a speech. "Friends my name is Florance DeChancy. As you know there's been a lot of crime lately in the city that's why I think we need a stronger police force, especially here on the merchant level." Brittanica finds two different types of masks, one made of many square cut mirrors and one that is just a large round mirror that goes over the whole face. She wonders how you would see through it, but when trying it on can see through the other side quite well. think mirror police glasses but make it one oval mirror that covers the whole face ear to ear, chin to above forehead.
Stohp and Stock head to the nearest vendor a find relatively cheap and simple masks. As they wait in line the spot a middle aged man speaking to the crowd. "Folks, I'll be honest with your. You know the good work the Silver Shields have done to promote trade with our new neighbors. But trade needs to grow for us to expand. And to grow we'll need some more boats, roads through the forests, and much more. We can't do this without some money. As Overlord I will have to raise taxes, for the common good, but everyone needs to do their fair share for prosperity to come.
Delia and Ohen start toward the barracks level. On their way they spot some youths talking. They are early teens and one of them is sporting a black eye and puffy lip. You hear one of them talking to the bruised one, [b]"I say you report him to the police. Even if he's your dad it's no reason for you to be his punching bag." The boy responds "It's not his fault. He just got a little drunk last night." Another boy says, "I heard my dad talking about him. Tell's how your mom got chosen 'cause he took her mask that Mask Day and she had to wear his." The first boy says, "Look we've got some money, and we can buy you a mask that gets you noticed, that way you can get away from your dad and maybe get to see your mom."
As Zanderallen ponders another reporter comes running by shouting "There's some more candidates starting making speeches. This is going be a do hah of a campaign." Pepper is delayed another 15 minutes as she adds two more candidates to her total Florance DeChancy and Gerard Gilcres. Then she grabs Zanderallen. "I think an Imp mask would be great. Let's go shopping."

Bartomus stood in line, watched, waited, and shuffled forward. The young man in front of him seemed overly eager to get inside in spite of his rather poor disposition. Bartomus followed behind and stepped into the shop.
"I thought the objective was to avoid being chosen?" Bartomus asked a bit confused. "Don't mind me asking, Baldric is it, well there may be other ways to rise above your current station."
Bartomus looked over at the monster masks and tried to picture which he would prefer to be wearing for the upcoming event. "Monsters, huh?"

Delia immediately diverts to the group of youths, working hard to conceal her fury. She bends down to examine the bruised boy's face, saying gently, "Being drunk doesn't make it not his fault. You should go to the police and ask for George Miller. He's a good man. I worked with him and he'll take care of you." She pulls out her coin purse and gives him 4 gold, and each of the other youths 5 silver, "If you want to try and escape by random chance, here, this should get you any mask you want, if not, it will give you a chance to start somewhere else. I would heal you, but it would get rid of the evidence, I'm sorry..." She looks at the other kids, "Or you guys could let your parents know and see if they will help. But please, do something to help..." She trails off, looks at the bruised boy, "I'm sorry, I'm Delia. What's your name?"

"And my name is Ohen. We're with the Silver Shields, you can trust us. Would you like us to walk with you to the police? Perhaps your father feels guilty for switching masks with your mother, but this is no way to act. Perhaps we could talk to him, if you don't feel comfortable with the police?" Ohen will speak kindly to the boy, and try to make conversation while they walk. "When was your mother taken from you? I'm sure it's hard every masking day for you. Has your father ever hit you before?" (diplomacy 26)

Bartomus asks some questions. Delia asks some questions. Stohp is wary of mask days. Zanderallen goes mask shopping with Pepper. Ohen asks some questions. Britannica makes a purchase. Stock is unimpressed with the politician....on the other hand he's honest. ________
The young man (late teens early 20's) turns to Bartomus. "Oh, hey you're famous aren't you? I've heard my dad talk about you. My names Baldric Rothchild. Yeah I'd love to get out from under my dad or maybe you'd say the whole family. It's not like I'm going to inherit anything since I'm his forth son, and I might add least favorite. However, being raised in his household it's not like I've been able to pick up any useful skills." He hands the proprietor some money and takes a plain white mask with a red arrow painted toward the center.
Delia and Zanderallen confront the youngsters. They scatter leaving only poor Ulrich with the Sheilds. He stammers and seems to be having some problem putting words together. An obvious case or either hero worship or terror. I sort of vaguely remember her I'm 12. If I report my dad for anything then I'll have nothing and be an orphan and have to live in the orphanage. At least we get money for my mom being gone." Stock sees the mask he wants in the back of the shop. It has a price of 4 copper.
Brittanica is not sure where the other Shields went off to. Seems everyone split up. There's a lot of people on the streets today. Mask shopping seems to be the top of everyone's list. Zanderallen and Pepper make toward a mask shop on the merchant level. There's a line, and standing on a soap box near by is a figure Zanderallen knows well. Lord Marcus Rothchild, he is speaking "..and I say we of the Float need to put the needs of the Float first. Cutter should get back to cutting wood so we don't have to buy it from Lizardsfolk. There should be clothing tariffs on the Drow, local shops do it better. Beast folk need to pay back taxes for all the years they were in the city making profits off other people’s trash. These taxes can then go to the betterment of the people with increased services."

Then as she looks back at Ulrich, she stares a little too intently at the boy for a moment, seeing past the bruises to connect the resemblance to the drunk man Ohen talked to the previous night. Knowing she can't hide her emotions, she kneels down to at least not tower over Ulrich, "My parents died when I was around 8. So I know growing up without them isn't easy. But if money is the only thing stopping you from reporting him... I vow to Serenbeth I will see you cared for. Do you have any siblings?"

Being adopted and such by the tribe, they all used a name and then might use something to distinguish each of those that shared a first name. "Bartomus, of the Silver Shields. Well, what can you do? Anyway, you can turn that into something that makes you you, rather than trying to be what your dad wants? There's everything from the guard to working for one of the merchants that travel the float?"
The shop owner handed Baldric a mask that definitely shouted "PICK ME" and Bartomus gave it a nod not really sure what else to offer the younger man. He glanced at the three masks that might fit him and shrugged. He wasn't certain if any of them really was working for him.
"Just those three in my size?" He asked to be certain.

Finally unable to put up with it anymore Zander says just loud enough to be heard to no one in particular, "Taxing innocent people for a service they used to perform. What nonsense."

Ulrich replies to Delia and Ohen. "No siblings. So you think an orphanage isn't bad. I'm 12 maybe I could apprentice somewhere?"
Brittanica and Zanderallen (and Pepper) are rounded on by Rothchild. "Well look it's a few of the Silver Shields. Our brave heroes, that never have to pay taxes for wealth they 'earn'." He smirks. "Taxes pay for services, pay for the requirements to run the gate to Plateau City. It's not like these things run themselves." Baldric nods and shrugs. "Trouble is I'm not sure what I want to do, and I'm not sure what I could really be good at...or even adequate." Baldric accepts his mask and heads out. The shopkeeper responds to Bartomus, "Oh No my good sir. It's just that people of your...size aren't common. There's a few more I have of a large variety. Some of all of us have something in larger sizes. It's required you know." He shows Bartomus a few more to choose from.
Brittanica flashes Rothschild the sweetest looking smile she has and says to him, "Actually as a student of magic and so much more I can indeed inform you that the gate does run off of the inherent magic of the Float itself, no taxes needed."
She then continues, putting a more serious look on her face "Now if you want to talk about taxation or lack thereof I do not believe that the float currently has an inheritence tax and unless I am confusing my nobles,royals, and otherwise elite I believe that from what I know of you, all your wealth is inherited and I must say as a member of one of the old founding families of the float you've managed to stretch that wealth impressively far, that is unless you have an additional revenue stream which depending on its nature may or may not be subject to taxation. For example, I believe common parlance is the black market is the freeest market and the thing about the black market is there are no taxes. Just a hypothetical example of course. There is also smuggling, where one can save overhead by not have to worry about taxes in the form of tariffs or other import/export fees, racketeering, loansharking, money laundering, and several other less savory enterprises that due to their illegal nature also pay no official tax, but I'm sure someone from an upstanding family like yourself knows nothing about any of these things. The reason why I know so much about these things is I collect knowledge, I'm somewhat of a student of magic and all things and very soon I will be publishing my first edition of the Encyclopedia: Britannica in order to advance in the Star Mages guild. I don't suppose you are a book collector? When this tome comes out I have a feeling it will retain and mature in value as time goes on. It could be a very worthwhile investment."

Stohp heads home and finds a mirror to look at how the cheap mask she bought looks on her. She’s just not feeling it. Nor does she feel like searching up and down for a mask she likes to wear. As she stands there scowling at her reflection she struck with inspiration and smacks her forehead for not thinking of this before. She’s a craftswoman, she doesn’t need some other person‘s work she should just make her own. Knowing Stock is in a similar cheap mask situation she sees if he’s interested in collaborating to make them both masks.

He returned his gaze to the various masks that would be able to fit a Taur. He looked them over and kept having to remind himself that really, the masks had such a juxtaposed purpose that kept making him hesitant to pick one.
"You know what, how about the bear one. I keep thinking I should wear something that looks like what we had to deal with on one of our adventures." Bartomus explained. He reached into his pouch and offered up a gold piece and waited to see if that was enough for the mask.
"Enough? Oh, and where is a good place to grab something to eat for ride back down."

Zander's eye's flash with the briefest hint of anger, and in the moment it takes to compose himself Brit launches into a taxation tirade that brings deep joy to Zander. He doesn't think he could have expounded upon it so eloquently.
He does have one thing to add as he rolls up a sleeve to show his scarred arms, "While the state of your taxes and wealth may be in question Lord Rothchild. Here are the taxes of the Sheilds," he traces a more visible scar from an orc axe on his forearm, "Paid in blood for the safety of the people of the Float. But for the grace of Domi and Gargul paid with my life." He pulls down the shoulder of his shirt and tunic to reveal the life scar the Deep One left above his heart. Brittanica scores a hit and gets a hero point. Stock starts back home. My bad I meant to have you interact so.... Stohp considers making her own mask. Bartomus makes a purchase. Not sure what you mean by ride back down, the flying carpet service is not something most people afford, they just take either the central staircase or one of the staircases around the corner towers. Ohen is inquisitive. Jacob, you need to level up your character sheet, should have 372,700 xp I think. Delia keeps up the dialogue. Zanderallen fires a shot and gets a hero point. ________
Zanderallen and Brittanica see Lord Rothchild turn red. He responds. "That's what you're paid for Mr. Baker. The orphanage here is run by the city, paid for with taxes. The Bakers apprenticed you as part of a program run by the city, also paid for with taxes. As to your scar's...I see you need to have a better cleric in your little group." HE turns to Brittanica, "As for you, well at least you're human. You'll learn." With that he turns and leaves. Zanderallen and Pepper can now enter the mask shop.
Stock starts back home when the politician accosts him coming out of the shop. "Excuse me I overheard your comment. My name is Gerard Gilcrest. Yes I know raising taxes may be a hard road to follow, but it's an honest one. I've heard from some that the beast folk have settled in the forest but need a road to get goods from us and to sell to us. There's been a lot of expansion since the Crying Wood retreated to the plateau. Frankly there's a lot of tail chasing by the current city council. Would you consider campaigning for me?"
Stohp considers returning home and making her own mask but then realizes that this would go against Float law. {The choosing is done by the Gods overseen by Flower. Mask venders are prohibited from making more than 20 of the same mask. Each vender spends the year between each mask week working on making quality and unique masks.} This is because each year 20 of the same masks are chosen and they must 'report for duty'.
The vendor hands Bartomus 5 silver pieces. "Well depends if you want a full meal or just something to much. There's 'Falafel's Dogs and Tacos'. It's a little food stand about 20 yards north of here. Then there's 'Some Likes it Hot' cantina about half a block west of here."
Poor Ulrich's head is a spinning back and forth. He tells Ohen "Honestly I don't remember much. She had red hair like mine. Her name is Rebecca Morria. Well I wouldn't say he's mean, he just doesn't have much control, and he drinks a lot, doesn't really have a great job when he does go to work. He's a teamster down on the docks, but he doesn't work a lot. Good thing we get that stipend from the Float. Yeah food would be good, though I ate some yesterday so I can go a bit longer." He turns to Delia "Well I'm pretty good with my hands, mostly."

Stock stops and looks at the man. "First off, you don't want me politicking for you. I'll say the wrong thing...even if you tell me to just keep my mouth shut, I won't.
Second - I'm not just going to stump for you because you asked nicely. I'm not the wisest Shield but my mother didn't raise a dummy.
Now - I hear what you are saying about development that's needed. All that requires money and money comes directly from taxes. Where adults can agree to disagree is how all of the town's tax money is spent today and who pays it. Aye, economic expansion is a noble goal and supporting the beastfolk as well.

Zander let's Rothchild leave the field in disgrace thinking to himself, 'I had one of the best clerics, that's why I'm scarred and not dead.'
He turns to Brit, "That was well said. Rothchild is nothing more or less than a self-adsorbed prick. Anyone who is not him is beneath him. Non-humans are easier for him to bully because he can point out differences. He's a child who unfortunately wields a fair bit of power. Him becoming Overlord would probably make things in the city quite a bit worse for everyone not on the Gold level."
Offering his arm to Pepper with a smile, "I guess I can't ask any of that to stay out of the paper can I, dear? Ready to get our masks?"

He smiled at the merchant thankful for the recommendation and headed out of the shop with his bear mask. It was growing on him. He had once seen a great bear on the plains, it was a massive creature. Bartomus wasn't certain he could pull off the look of such an animal.
He walked over to the food vendor with a rumble in his stomach.
"Your fellow merchant over there said this was a good place to grab a bite." Bartomus smiled as he took a look at the offerings. "How about I get four of your favorite tacos, but savory not super tongue burning spicy, alright?"
Bartomus jingled the five silver in his closed hand. His stomach grumbled again.

Once they are situated with food, Delia looks intently at Ulrich, "So. Your father has a pattern of drinking, losing control, and hitting you? But when he's sober he's not mean he just doesn't work hard?"

Ohen will slow down with the questions and try to make the boy more comfortable as they get food. "My father is a merchant, perhaps you could help him unload boxes. Or maybe apprentice with the Smiths. They are good friends." He will take Delia aside at some point away from the boy while he's eating. "I may not know very well how to make a small amount of coin last, but I'm pretty sure 3 sp a day is enough for simple food and lodging for two, let alone whatever he makes as a forerman. I suspect to much is going to drink, and he's neglecting and abusing his son. We can't exactly kidnap him though, perhaps we should talk to the police after all."

As Brittanica waits for Zanderallen a man approaches her but stops part way toward you. He is half elven, pale complected, white hair. He is not old, rather somewhat an albino. He’s perhaps in his late 30’s. Though well dressed you can tell his clothes hang somewhat loose on him, though they are well made. He looks at a scroll of paper and then approaches you. "Good day, Lord Elric Storm currently serving on the city council and member of the Star Mages Guild. I would like to solicit your support in running for the position of Overlord of the Float. I feel magic is both taken for granted in the Float and ignored. We have many find craftspeople in the Float and I think that having the guild work with them we can create magical appliances that would in turn find markets abroad. This will help the Float's economy and establish the Float as a place of magical craftsmanship and hopefully draw more users of magic to bolster our guild."
Bartomus looks at the cart. He seems to remember a similar one down on the fence. The proprietor seems familiar. "Oh, yes, we have several new flavors. In fact I've recently created the taco dog. Would you care to try one on the house?"Nothing really to see otherwise. The taco's are okay but the taco dog doesn't work at all rolled a 2 on cooking.
The man looks at Stock for a moment. "Well because I think I could make the Float a better place. being a merchant myself I can see the best ways to make the Float an economic powerhouse and self-sufficient. My name is Gerard Gilcrest. And I think honesty is best, so if you're blunt that's fine. What I need is some campaigners that are brutally honest to drive the points home to the people."
Ulrich shrugs at Delia, clearly not wanting to really say it that way. He says "I could try to load boxes but I'm not that strong.". Remember he's been missing meals. He is a bit thin and scrawny looking for his age. He seems intelligent enough, any jobs that might just use brains?' He digs into the food. As Ohen correct in your assessment of the dad and Delia ponder what to do they hear a call from outside the cantina. There is a tall skinny surface drow standing on a soap box in the street. "Citizens, my name is Drezz Dinoryn and I'm running for Overlord. Now many of you will undoubtedly be asking what can I do for you. As you know there is much needed structural work on the lower levels. One of the corner pillars is decaying from the inside out as evidenced by the collapse of the stairs on the pillar 2 years ago. It's been two years and still that tower is out of commission. I would like to see work done on these lower levels instead of continued investments on the upper levels. In addition I would like to make the giant turtles a protected species and have monstrologer clerics on hand to better take care of them. Too often they are overworked in trying to cope with the increased shipping in the area." You can see a bit of a crowd gathering around him.

Delia mostly tunes out the politician, occupied by Ulrich's situation. She lets him eat mostly in peace, asking more benign questions about the things he likes to do and is interested in.
When Ohen pulls her aside, her anger rises to the surface, "Three silver a day is more than enough to keep yourself and your kid fed. That's enough for good food and nice shoes... "When we get him away from his father, I think asking Micah and his family to care for and apprentice him would be good. They could let him help out with book keeping or something while he built up his strength. And if Micah was there, he'd be safe from his father. Or..." She stares off, saying carefully, "I know what he looks like. I know where he works now. I could find him."

Brittanica takes a moment to think of all she knows of Lord Elric Storm from an arcane, local and nobillity perspective.
Providing she doesn't remember anything negative from her knowledge Brittanica curtsies and says to Lord Elric Storm, "Good afternoon my Lord."
She says, "I just had an encounter with some of your competition and as for magic being taken for granted and ignored well would you believe a member of one of the Founding Families of the Float thinks taxation somehow runs the gates and not the Float's inherent magical nature? What are they teaching people these days? I digress."
She looks at Elric's Star Mage pin to try to get an idea of what rank he currently is. Brittanica's pendant itself has been upgraded though the fulcrum gem has not and she has not yet gotten a memory stone that the guild gives to those who have attained the rank of Star Mage being Brittanica is only a Grand Mage.
She asks him, "From a guild perspective what is your opinion on someone without wizard training being able to advance beyond the rank of tier 3 grand mage? I admit I am somewhat of an odd duck being that I have advanced both my wizard training and bloodwitch training being a Theurge and I have thoughts on what I will do after I can go no farther as a Theurge in order to keep advancing but if the goal is to grow guild membership I wonder how many spontaneous casters without wizard training are putoff by the advancement limitations that the guild has. I know that some folks in the guild don't really care much for those who mix their wizard training with other disciplines or those who adventure and for much of my career I did stay in the tower as it were where I believe I proved my worth despite being a multiclass wizard but now that I'm adventuring too well I imagine there are those who look down upon me. Also I like your magical appliances idea. I just came back from a recent trip to the Crying Wood where I had an interesting conversation with some of the elves there concerning their winemaking techniques and I imagine some sort of magical winemaking tool might sell there."
"I do wonder how your magical appliance idea squares with some of the ethos of the guild I mean I guess since you would be selling the magical appliances it wouldn't be a spell casting service given to the public for free but if we were in joint ventures with craftspeople how would we keep the knowledge of the spells we used on the appliance from them since they are not Star Mages. I almost wonder if we do want to move forward and grow the guild if perhaps we could let non mages join and learn but restrict their advancement. I know this might be controversial but if the craftspeople we worked with on the magical appliances were guild members there would be no conflict with the ethos, right."

She listens to his answers to all her questions and as long as nothing she hears from him seems stupid, immoral or otherwise wrong, she tells him, "I'll consider your request but I don't believe I'm ready to provide an endorsement at this time. As a new member of the Shields I'm not really sure what our party position is on local politics. I can at least tell you I don't think I'll be endorsing that member of one of the founding families I ran into earlier considering he was rude to a member of my adventuring party and seemed to have a problem with some citizens of the float for something they have no control over at least. If I do decide to provide my support how should I get a hold of you in order to coordinate?"

As he did so, Bartomus quickly realized he would need to find something else to eat. When the man put everything together, Bartomus made sure to pay a two silver to the man and did so with the flip of both coins into the air with a lot of force. He made it appear at the same time that he had taken a bite of the vendor's new creation and gave a very satisfied nod of approval that a thumbs up reaffirmed.
Then Bartomus spun about juggling the mask and the food. He waited until he was a good deal away from the vendor's stand and had turned a few corners before he dropped everything into a trash container.
His stomach growled and was not satisfied in the slightest with the mental promise to find something else. Bartomus headed back down to the Shields HQ.

Oddly enough, both parts start with talking to Micah." He will pat Delia on the shoulder, then return to Ulrich. Whenever Ulrich is done eating, he plans to go to Micah.

Brittanica I'm going to say that there has never been a star mage for overlord asks what they are teaching people. "Mostly the essentials, magic is touched on buy glossed over." Elric's standing is an Arcanist. Elric comments, "I'm certainly not the leader of the guild he's in Plateau City, so I really can't pronounce guild policy. Though I do have a vote in things. I would think you'd have to apply some of your questions toward the head quarters in Plateau City. As to using magic in appliance creation, the crafter doesn't have to be present during the casting. Bartomus headed towards the lifts and worked his way down towards the HQ. His stomach continued to rumble and then he remembered that there were free meals down in the Fence level. He watched the lift and then continued on down to the Fence level.
He got off at the Fence level and let his nose guide him hoping that he might find things to quiet his stomach. He tried to keep some focus on the crowd, smiling and waiving at someone who he might have recognized. Yet, he needed to eat something.

Zanderallen spots the two other Shields and motions Brit to follow as he moves to join them, "Let's walk and talk. There's a lot of history but the short answer is, Yes our opinions carry a lot of weight around here. From stopping a zombie plague on the trash level, to helping save this corner of the world during the Blood grass crisis, to saving the Fence level from mind control bread, to rooting out a major criminal organization that ended in a public trial of one of the council lords, we've become very well known and respected in the city. If you asked to be carried in a palanquin on Fence level people probably would, not that we abuse our reputation like that. As to our stance in local politics, we've always taken a stand for the common people and the good of all. This has put us at odds with certain members of the council who would love use their position to boost their own endeavors. We have a lot of friends on the Fence and Merchant levels because of the opportunities our actions have brought them. It's also part of the reason our headquarters and living space is on the Fence level rather than having moved up to something more prestigious. We've been in it for the common people. As for the elections themselves we've never really stepped foot in that arena. I would advise caution. If you endorse a candidate as a Silver Shield people will take notice."

Bartomus goes in search. Delia leads the way. Stohp looks around the HQ. Brittanica asks about politics. Stock has a strong opinion about politics. Zanderallen gives a short speech. Ohen looks for the Smiths. um, no way are the gods going to reveal the mask, and see below.
Okay I had to talk to the Powers That Be about a former PC that retired into the city being used as an NPC. The general opinion was, well is there a different way to do it. So... read below. Also, politics is going to take a side seat as soon as I can move the scene. It's not going away, but ... you'll see.
Delia and Ohen are not able to find the Smiths.Also some one may remember that Micah is out of town on a raw material buying mission. However they spot another smithing family that lives a few houses down. You know they have a son about Ulrich's age. These are the Paddock's. Hearing of the boy's misfortune Felicia Paddock says "Why of course he can stay with us." The father Jim Paddock says, "Whatever we can do to help." When Felicia leads the lad away he leans in a bit. "He looks a little peeked. Not sure how much help he'll be at the forge, but then it's not like we make the armor or weapons, just good solid cooking gear." He waves to you as he rejoins the missus. Pepper asks, "What's for dinner I'm starving?"
Back at HQ, Bartomus and Stock meet up with Stohp. Stohp appears to be non responsive as she appears to be having a waking dream, or epileptic episode. Stohp only Highlight to display spoiler: {Stohp is floating above the Float. Somehow she see's down into and through the levels. All the people are gathered on the streets and the Underlord starts at the top walking between the people lined up. The old UnderLord gives his crown to the former OverLord. She walks the crown he wares arches out a brand of multicolored light hitting people masks. But none join the procession behind her. It is apparent that none will join. Then the city begins to tilt. The magic apparatus in the bottom of the Float begins to fail. Soon people are falling off the sides of the Float into the water. The fence level drops below the water level. The there is a cracking of the pillars, the levels begin to topple in on themselves. The city rapidly sinks and sucks many that tried to swim away under. Then she hears a voice. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. There can be no good without the bad, no joy without sorrow, no peace without war, and no love without hate. Even we gods are bond by duties and oaths."}
Seems like an opportune time to go get some dinner and reform the group.

She doesn't care what crafting discipline they get Ulrich involved in, just a family where Delia is confident that should the abusive father return, the family would be able to fend him off and wouldn't be abusive themselves. Delia leans towards Ohen, saying quietly, "This still needs to be reported to the police before those bruises fade. Otherwise we and then this family just kidnapped Ulrich..."

Since Brittanica was with Zanderellen and Ohen caught up to them I will also assume she is aware of Ulrich's plight and says to the other two, "You know I met person named Elric today and he is one of those types stumping to be Overlord. The funny thing is he wants to be Overlord so the star mages and craftsfolk can work together to create magical appliances to sell abroad to boost our economy here in the float. It would seem to me that if these smiths you are thinking of apprenticing Ulrich to make cookware perhaps they could be part of Elric's initiative should he be elected. I mean I like his idea but I am not sure if I know enough about him to make an endorsement nor if I should necessarily endorse anyone except perhaps to endorse that folks not vote for Rothschild as he kind of seemed like a shady creep who didn't like nonhumans."

Stohp shakes off the vision and frowns. That was too vivid to just be random imaginings. The question is why her and why now. The only answer that comes to mind is that something's going to happen related to the elections and underlords that the shields will have to fix. With an exaltation of annoyance she asks Stock and Bart what they heard about the elections.

Zanderallen crouches down to Ulrich's level and holds out a hand to greet him, "Well met Ulrich, you can call me Zander." When they run into the Paddocks he greets them warmly and as he hears of the boys plight he takes Jim aside, "You want out for Ulrich, Jim. Let me know if any trouble gets made I'll clear things up with the guard.[b] He hands the man a pouch of coins for the boys immediate care.
Noticing Delia's worry he assures her, [b]"The Paddocks are good people, I know them from my association with the Smiths. Jim will watch out for the boy. We have one stop to make and then we'll meet everyone at the Fatted Calf for some dinner, all this politicking has me starving." As they make their way down Zander leads the group to the Barrack's guard post where he knows an old friend is stationed. "Lukas, I need you to keep an eye out for me. Shields found a boy on the streets, abused by his father, mother taken away by the Underlord years ago. Ulrich is his name. We put him in the care of the Paddocks to learn a trade and be taken care of. If there's trouble it comes to me, understood? Thanks."
(OOC: Lukas is technically a Smith but is also part of Shield's contacts, if he needs to be replaced it's by whatever guard lieutenant we know on the Barracks level instead of him.)
Stopping by the headquarters to group up he suggest everyone head to the Fatted Calf for some supper. "I don't know about the rest of you but you can't walk half a block without stepping into some political crap up in the Merchant level. Anybody else have an exciting day?"

Bartomus worked his way back to their headquarters with a full stomach and his bear mask. He saw Stock and offered up a greeting as he got himself settled in their common space. He glanced about and saw Stohp moving about oddly.
"Hey Stohp? You ok, buddy?" Bartomus asked a couple of times getting more and more worried as Stohp did respond right away. He started walking towards her when it appeared she snapped out of what ever and looked rather annoyed. She instantly asked about the elections.
"Not a whole heck of a lot about it. Seems that they pick all of the same folks with the same mask. One youngster I ran into, a fourth son, was buying a red arrow mask basically screaming "pick me." Bartomus shrugged and added a disbelieving shake of his head.
"Not sure the rebirth after 20 years is worth all of that."

The party goes to the Fatted Calf and sees it's bustling. Grokk sees you and waves you in. People see you coming and a table clears as patrons redistribute themselves. "Now you lot let them eat in peace. You can do all the yammering and what not afterwards." He nods to you all. "There you go friends, today's special is gulash, crusty bread, and purple cabbage. As you sit you notice a bard tuning up in the far corner. He then begins to sing a song. "Oh dark days are here, but we can make them better. It's a big deal with all the priests of the gods present. At the end of the ceremony everyone is supposed to don their masks for the upcoming couple of days.}

(OOC: I don't suppose there is another candidate with a slogan like Fix Float Faster or No Baloney we'll get to hear about too who is also disliked perhaps historically so, though really that part comes later, or potentially has seemingly a lack of support or excitement behind him but "wins" nonetheless? Brittanica realizes the Bard's playing would make it harder to be overheard and figures since their words carry weight in the Float it probably would be best not to be misinterpreted so Brittanica says to the Bard, "Why not play something a little less controversial? Do you know any ballads about King Claudia? I'll give you 10 gold if you replace your political commercial with songs that are more entertaining, should be more well received and for you to stick around the restaurant for a bit singing them, at least until we, the Silver Shields are done with dinner. Pretty good pay for an hour or two of work tops. Don't you agree?"
She asks the other members of the Shields, "On Blessing day, just how does the head preist of Flower determine which candidates would be best for the prosperity of city? I mean I'm not looking to impugn the head priest of Flower's reputation or anything but given Rothschild's supposed deep pockets is there anything he could do to subvert the process? The only thing I am convinced of so far is that of all the candidates I have spoken to or have heard you guys talk about Rothschild is definitely not good for the Float and I don't put it past him to try to gain any advantage he could because he rubs me the wrong way."

Delia notices some nearby patrons trying to listen in and fixes them with a stern glare intimidate 19 (yes that was a nat 20), holding each person's gaze until they look away. Hawky tries to look menacing too, but just looks fluffy.
Once she is satisfied that they won't be eavesdropped on, she says, "I was occupied with Ulrich, so I didn't catch his name, but the politician near where Ohen and I went seemed to be interested in helping the common folk. Is endorsing people something the Shields do? Or do we just do the gigs and stay out of politics?"
She smiles at Stock's description of their last encounter with the council, "Someone might lose a finger if they tried to muzzle you."

I never paid much heed to Mask day, it was just something that happens. But with an outside perspective I'm not sure Mask day is a good thing. There must be a better way to run the city than enslaving 400 people by lottery."
