Letting Pelonius and Holyhocks know they are leaving and Falco attempts to address the issue of the Fauns.
"I enjoy them because they are kind of funny. I suggest you spread the word that they, like many others species, will act different then you but have a place. In time people will begin to enjoy the different sorts of people I would think."
There is little in line of preparation for the journey other then asking for some new spells, more useful on water.

DM Mark - "In time people will begin to enjoy the different sorts of people I would think." Friday March 11th, 2022 7:07:18 PM
There is some discussion among the Petals and consensus on how to approach the Lead Stallion and the centaur leadership. The heroes turn to the fauns and warn them that they need to make sure, wherever they end up, that they are not causing trouble and follow local laws. They are reminded that guests in any place must be considerate of their hosts.
The fauns listen to this solemnly, nodding in agreement. Cael says, ”You betcha! While we wish we were traveling with you, we’re happy to stay here on Centaur Island for a while.” Tar says, ”Sure, we can behave. We always behave. Right fellas?” They all nod their heads in agreement.
Brym adds, ”Yeah, I do feel a little safer with the centaurs I guess. The liontaurs can be a little, well, sharp about things. And the minotaurs are just too serious all the time. The centaurs do seem to like music. So there’s that.” Then he looks quickly at Kiwina, Rolth and Son Imod. "Oh, ‘cept for you guys - you’re all right.”
Tar says, "And we can prolly help the centaurs with their sense of humor too!” The others nod seriously. Then Tar makes a loud farting noise with his hand on his mouth and they all fall down laughing.
If nothing else, the centaurs might learn tolerance at least.
—-------------------------------------------- The Petals head back to the Corral to talk to Pelonius. There, they find she is with Hollyhocks and several of the herd leaders. To normal folk this would be a fairly intimidating group. Not because they’re trying to intimidate the Petals, but just because this is kind of the best of the best among the centaurs, and they are confident leaders.
As you arrive Pelonius smiles warmly and invites you in, fauns and all. If the Petals suggest meeting alone with Pelonius, she encourages them to address all here unless there is a matter of particular sensitivity.
(If I understood correctly,) The Petals politely inform the Lead Stallion and all there that: - They intend to sail to Fargunia to seek more information about The Deep, which poses a threat to all of the Taur Isles.
- Since they are leaving, they can no longer guide the fauns, and hope that they will be treated well. They suggest this would bode well for future liontaur and minotaur visitors to Centaur Isles. This would also be consistent with Imod’s vision for tolerance among the taurs.
- They ask Polonius to provide the Fauns safe passage to go where they please on Centaur Islands as long as they don't cause any trouble and agree to abide by Centaur Island Laws. Suggestions include setting the fauns to some task, or perhaps even traveling with the Centaurs to Liontaur and Minotaur Isles as part of the mirror envoy.
The centaurs listen and seem to defer to Pelonius in this. You’re not sure if this is deferrance to her authority or perhaps a test of her leadership. Maybe both. She asks a few questions about the Deep and seems satisfied with your answers.
Pelonius says, ”Very well Petals. The centaurs thank you for your help in rescuing my father and the others, for returning the mirrors to us, and for working out their function. The centaurs are in your debt, and you may call on us - any of us - if there is need.
“As for your friends the fauns, I am sure we can accommodate them here. The question is if they can tolerate us? Well, my friendly little fey - what say you, do you choose to stay here on Centaur Isle? Will you abide by our rules and not cause trouble?”
The fauns nod solemnly. Tar says, ”Oh, we never cause trouble. Hey, we did find a beehive with some honey. But we need some help getting it.” Cael adds, ”Yeah, the last time didn’t go so good.”
She turns to Hollyhocks. ”My good Druid, please work with these gentle faun to instruct them in the ways of bees and in how they may earn their keep here in other constructive ways.” Hollyhocks seems a bit surprised but quickly recovers, responding with a nod.
”Farewell, Petals. I wish you Domi’s courage and Imod’s strength, for they are one and the same, in your quest regarding The Deep. Go with his blessing and our thanks.”
(Monday’s post should have you arriving in Wedding City unless you have other plans.)

It belatedly occurs to Rolth that he ought to have some level of feline affinity with Esmerelda. But when he goes looking for her, he finds her napping, so he continues to make himself otherwise useful around the ship.
Upon arrival in port, he will look around carefully, looking for unusual vessels or other potential threats and opportunities.

Mak loaded Elmer into the hold of the Rose and got him settled for the ocean voyage with fresh water and a bale of hay to start. He calculated this next leg of their journey would only be a few days, so he went to his hammock and sorted out the equipment he'd need. When he emerged on deck he had his bow, quiver, rapier, and in the place of his worn service shortsword was a fancy handaxe with gold and silver filigree.
The young nobleman seemed to be in much better spirits as he moved about deck, but anyone who was observant noticed that he had a nervous habit of touching the handaxe as he'd made certain it was still there hanging from his belt.

DM Mark - Wedding City Monday March 14th, 2022 7:24:51 PM Mak gets Elmer squared away on board the The Rose, and soon the ship is underway. The Petals (and all of Wil’s unseen friends and relations) and the crew feel just a little better. Being undersail seems to lift everyone’s spirits - something about the clean air and the salt spray just makes everything right.
The Petals pitch during the two day voyage to Wedding City. Son Imod works on some potions over the time. Tsak is able to catch a few fish on the trip, much to Emerelda’s delight.
Thankfully, the voyage is otherwise uneventful.
In the afternoon hours of the second day, The Rose weighs anchor outside what you believe to be Wedding City. You can see a dock area, but The Rose is too large a ship to use the small boat docks here. A boat is soon on it’s way out to you. The Petals arrange for transport to the docks, and all (including Elmer if you whish) are on dry land. It seems to be a bustling port. But folk there are all business. Trade and commerce is conducted at the docks there, but there is not much welcome to be had beyond the dock area.
You spot an odd couple on the docks walking hand in hand, gazing out at the water. What catches your eye is that the hands they are holding seem to be tied together with a cord even as their other hand is free, and they seem to wear a mask across their mouths. But they seem pretty happy and are walking casually together apart from others.
Sense Motive DC 12: Highlight to display spoiler: { People here are not very friendly, and seem a bit suspicious of the Petals, though you’re not aware you’ve done anything to arouse suspicion.}

You are encouraged to stay aboard your ship for accommodations, though they will acknowledge there are some places to stay - but only near the dock area.
They will ask if there is a bard among you, and you will learn that bards are welcome at the inns and public houses in town.

Rolth is nonplussed but not surprised at the lack of a warm welcome here, after what we learned back at the WLA chapterhouse. He silently notes the opportunities for bards, but is more focused on our mission than on the inns and pubs for the moment. Elyas wonders about the odd couple he sees. The cord tying them together certainly looks to be something they could cut or break with some effort, and they do not appear to have any sort of minder or guard that would prevent this. Clearly, both the cord and the masks seem voluntary. The two seem to be young humans, and they are behaving affectionately toward one another.

The young couple blink as they look at Wil and at each other. At first they seem a bit unsure what to do, but they wave him off and say nothing.
When Elyas later asks their guide about the couple, their guide replies, ”Ah yes. Wedding City is special. Couples come from all over Fargunia to get married here. They come to complete their vows to each other and divulge their secrets at the Temple of Flower. It’s a special ceremony that lasts a week where the couple sits and shares everything they know about themselves and others. At the end of the week they are bound to each other with their shared knowledge.
“Until the day of the ceremony the couples move about the city with their hands bound to each other with ribbon and their mouths covered in a ceremonial gag. They cannnot speak until their vows are complete.
“Don’t worry, you’ve done nothing wrong. It’s good for them to be tested this way. Come, I will take you to Ardian’s Tower.”
The guide takes payment of 100 gp. He leads you up past the dock area and into the city. Wedding City is interesting. It seems pretty open and clean - more so than the average city. Building tend to be low, squat structures. People can be seen congregating and chatting here and there, but seem to fall silent and watch as you pass, careful not to be overheard.
Eventually, you are lead to the edge of town. Your guide gestures ahead to a tower and simply turns to leave.
Before you in a single stone tower, perhaps 20’ wide and 40’ tall - certainly one of the tallest buildings around. It appears to have a flat top surrounded by crenellations, though you do not see any guards. A short flight of stairs leads up to a large stone door with a pull rope beside it.
Pulling the rope will summons a familiar figure who greets you warmly - certainly the warmest greeting you’ve seen in this town.
It is Rainard, a Tengu wizard whom the Petals rescued at sea clinging to wreckage at the time. He seems surprised and pleased to see the Petals. ”Ahhh, my rescuers! Welcome, welcome!”

Mak(JamesM)(72/72)HP|AC:25/17T/19FF|CMD 30|+1 CLB:Arrows(20)|20/15/-/-(RS)/-|(FA,WFs,WS,WT,PBS,MS)**|1d8+10(x3) Thursday March 17th, 2022 3:11:07 PM
Mak stood back and listened while looking out for guards that might recognize him.
DM Mark - Wedding City Thursday March 17th, 2022 6:00:57 PM Wil Will is fascinated by the tower. Tsak greets Rainard, wondering why there is no moat and if the kenku mage was expecting the Petals. Rolth asks his guide to explain the sites as the party heads through town. At the tower, he asks to come in to speak with Rainard and Ardian. Son Imod introduces himself to the Rainard, asking about Ardian. Kiwina asks few questions moving through the City, but makes mental notes as the party goes to make sure he can find his way back to the ship. Mak keeps a sharp eye out for guards that might recognize him.
The party finds the hired guide reluctant to share much that is specific beyond the way to Ardian’s tower. He tersely mentions this architectural addition to a house, and that difference in the paving, and points to an obvious blacksmith’s shop. But he does not mention who the architect was, or why the paving changed, or what the smith’s name is or what he makes. The lack of information is rather odd and the man seems a bit put off by even being asked. Once he reaches the tower he politely but firmly takes his leave. It occurs to you that he never even told you his name, nor asked yours.
At the tower, Rainard’s welcome is effusive. The Kenku looks to be in much better shape than when you found him adrift at sea with a strange boy. His black feathers look shiny and clean, as does his long black beak. He’s dressed in clean robes, and his long sleeves waggle as he gestures you in.
”Yes, yes, yes. Oh I am so pleased to see you all. Pleased. Come in, come in. My travels, well that’s been a story, a story, but Ardian will have my feathers if I don’t let him know, know, know you’re here first thing. Come, sit down. I will get Ardian, Ardian.”
The Kenku brings you into a large room that seems to take up half of this first floor. You see a trap door in the floor and a doorway to another room that looks to be a kitchen of sorts. There are pegs in the wall and boots by the door. And there are stacks of books here and there, as well as boxes and piles of - well, just a bunch of stuff.
Rainard leads you up a flight of stone stairs to a rather large room, a sort of chaotic library filled tables and shelves with stacks of books, scrolls, jars, carved wooden items - all manner of things that might be studied. At the far end of the room is an old, bent man. Rainard says, ”Awk! Master Ardian! They have come, they have come, come. You see! These are the Petals you seek, the ones that rescued me and the boy. Here they are!”
The man looks up. He is as unkempt and disheveled as Rainard is preened and clean. He regards you for a moment, one eye squinting, the other staring at you. ”Pedlers, eh? Well, peddlers get around and tend to know a lot of things. I’m quite glad you’ve come though! Wonderful. Thank you, thank you. You may leave us Rainard.”
Rainard nods with as much of a smile as a long beak will allow. He goes back down the stairs.
“I have been seeking you - as you no doubt know. My divinations have shown me things, and I have learned troubling things. It seems there is a power in the seas near the Taur Isles. And the more I looked and listened, the more my investigations kept coming back to you. You know you are developing quite a reputation as heroes in these parts. You even won some tournament among the centaurs! You solved a murder, earned the ire and admiration among the liontaurs, and rescued a centaur king. I sent out several messengers.” He wags a bony finger your direction as he speaks.
“But I digress - tell me, what do you know of an entity referred to as ‘the Deep’?”
His transition from welcome to a question about the Deep is a bit abrupt. He listens intently to your reply.

It is as my companions have said, the Deep is some sort of malevolent power that seems to be making a play for domination in the region. It's minions distribute magical amulets that warp the minds of their wearers, turning them into mindless, aggressive pawns. We met a chuul that used a piece of the Deep, part of a tentacle, to cursedly warp the flesh of those in its thrall, making them tentacled monstrosities. The chuul was accompanied by frog-like Deep Ones. The chuul promised us power if we joined it, and madness, despair and death if we resisted. Earlier, we encountered and defeated a sort of reverse Cecaelia named Aaroth, who told tales of a coming doom that was beyond our understanding. And on our sailing journeys, we passes a great rock formation that looked tentacled as well. So signs of this thing and its plots are all around the Taur Isles, at least. It seems to bring great peril to us all. So what can you tell us of your studies of it?"

Elyas doesn't have a lot to add to the others' description of their encounters with the deep.
"whatever this Deep cult is, we seem to be crossing paths with them quite frequently. Can you tell us, sir, about your divinations? what has been revealed to you about this enemy? and have you seen any of these amulets that my friends have described?
DM Mark - Wedding City Friday March 18th, 2022 5:54:04 PM Wil keeps his mouth closed and his eyes open. He notices something unusual in the scrolls and books in one area of the clutter - several look to be waterproof in one way or another. Some seem to be written in a scaly skin, a book has a waxy or oily look to it, there are a few stone tablets with unintelligible runes carved on them, etc. Tsak admits the Petals would like to know more about the Deep. Kiwina agrees, and he mentions the creatures the Petals have fought and the strange amulets. Rolth shares what the petals know, including warped creature, mind controlling amulets, etc. He asks Ardian what he knows. Son Imod notes creatures fought. Mak wonders if the control the Deep asserted was akin to being heartseeded. Falco listens. Elyas notes that the Petals seem to have crossed paths with the Deep often, and asks what Ardian knows.
After the party shares what they know, Ardian will produce an amulet similar to what they describe. He laughs if they are worried by it. ”No, no, I was able to sever its ties. Or something did. Anyway, it has no power now. But yes troubling indeed.”
“Heartseeded? In a way I guess, but I don’t think this thing is a god like Ga'al. No, the heartseeded submit their will to be controlled. This is more like a madness than anything else, along with a promise of power. At least I think it is. Have you encountered creatures that were actually under the control of one of these things?”
“My studies suggest this is a very old creature of some sort, an evil thing bent on destruction. So far, it has only been able to indirectly affect nearby evil creatures, but my friends - this is not the creature’s first attempt.”
He pulls over a large book, pointing to it. It’s written in a language you do not understand
Perception DC 10 and Linguistics 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {You can tell that the language is Aquan.}
”Long ago the creature had a gateway from another place into the Wold. Nearby underwater races were subjugated, and fell thrall to this thing. It seems to like to transform some creatures, which is interesting - kinda like you mentioned you saw. It sounds pretty awful.
“Eventually, heroes rose up from these aquatic folk. They fought the creature back, you see. They were not strong enough to destroy it, so they sealed it with a Teucri artifact. They broke the artifact into several items, and hid them.”
He pulls over another book.
”I have learned that the seals on this prison have begun to fail, and the power of the entity known as the Deep has begun to push back through. I am an old man, ill suited to go after these things. Would that I had your youth, I’d go after it myself.
Given the power this Deep seems to hold over others, I was fearful that if I brought this to the nobility, they may fall to the creature as the under sea races did, or try to use it for their own gain. So I needed the help of some good folk that can stand against this - some who have already stood against this. If the prison is failing now, it’ll fail again. No, I need your help to find these keys so this creature can be destroyed once and for all.”
“You’re gonna need a way to travel under the water, and I think I got a solution for that too - but it might be a little tricky.”
“Well, what do you say? Are you willing to take this on? Do you think you can?”

Son Imod is torn. He had taken up with the Petals in order to fulfil Imod's vision of seeing his children united and up until this point Son Imod had done things in furtherance of this goal.
Destroying or Reimprisoning the Deep while a noble cause does not necessarily further Imod's charge to Son Imod.
He says, "I am not sure. I took up with the Petals in orde to see that Imod's will be done with respect to unifying his fractured children. Everything we have done until now was in furtherance of this goal. We have come and heard you out about the Deep and it really does sound like a task worthy of heroes but I am unsure if I personally can undertake it or if I should try to return to Centaur Island and help Pelonius with her cause. It has a lingering aura, but nothing suggesting any current enchantments. He asks where these items are, and how the Petals might travel underwater. Falco is ready to accept the risks and adventure, even as some of his companions hesitate.
Regarding the amulet, the mage says, ”Yes, I had heard this amulet pulled at the minds of those that possessed it. All I can tell you is that it no longer seems to hold any such power.”
As Wil and Rolth ask to examine the sage’s writings, he does not grant such permissions and becomes a bit defensive. ”Yes, yes, I understand. You adventurers tend to want to control things and often seek to wrest knowledge and power from others when you cannot. You think that if you didn’t figure it out yourselves, well, then, it’s not worth the risk. Use care though - arrogance has been the downfall of many - from the mightiest rulers to the lowest fools, though you strike me as too clever to be either.
“I suppose you think you could simply overpower me. Perhaps you could, perhaps. But what do you know of the Teucri? What do you know of ancient writings, and the ancient power structures in the aquatic realms. What have you read of Floushwiz’s philosophies or the teachings of Salshisithas? Did you think that one of these writings here simply lays all this out? I wager it would take you years before you could work out from these varied histories, heresys, and histrionics what must be done. And I promise you the local authorities would not look kindly on you taking secrets from a sage by force.”
He regards Son Imod’s statement. ”Your personal motivations are you own my bullish brawler. And I think your stubbornness will serve you well. But know this. This creature used to be a threat to the aquatic races. But as you appear to have found out, it is now a threat to the Tauric Isles. It intends to unify them in ways you will not appreciate. And make no mistake, I doubt this creature would be content to stop there.”
He continues, "Now then, you ask about underwater travel. As for the simple matter of breathing underwater, I imagine you to be skilled enough to accomplish that. No, I am talking about allowing your ship and crew to travel beneath the waves - that is another matter entirely! I know a merman wizard named Jennis that can help with this. Yes. But Jennis can be touchy and only deals with those strong enough to show they are worthy of his time and attention.
“I can show you how to find him. You do that, and secure his help in enabling your ship to sail beneath the waves, and only then will I tell you of the keys we seek are and where you can find them. Why, if I gave you all this information at once - that would indeed be foolish of me! Understand that here in Fargunia, sages are trusted more for the knowledge they keep secret than the knowledge they share or sell. You’d be wise not to share what we’ve discussed with anyone here. I know not if there are agents of the Deep at work here. But I tell you this - if I can discover this information, well, so can others!”
“What say you, will you take this on? You seem hesitant. Shall I send you to find Jennis in his underwater home?”
(By the way, it doesn't take much of a Sense Motive skill to know this sage has a pretty low charisma. He may be smart, but diplomacy and smooth talking is not his strong suit.)

I think the evidence is convincing that a more united taur culture, though still providing differences that the Deep could play upon, would be more difficult for it to use for its purposes. I fear the Deep would work to stop taur unity in order to promote the chaos it seems to thrive on. Certainly suspicion is a weapon in its arsenal."

“Anyhow, the first task will be getting Jennis to help by enchanting your ship so it can sail underwater. He doesn’t live here in Fargunia. Nope, Jennis is a merfolk. And a powerful wizard. He lives underwater off the coast here a bit. You’ll anchor there and need to go below. Like I said, he will respect you if he thinks you’re worthy. No doubt he’ll test you first.
He gives you a pearl encrusted gold medallion. ”Give this to Jennis when you see him. He will know that I sent you, and will hopefully help us, but you’ll need to be persuasive. He lives in a large coral tower there.
“Here in Fargunia? “Now to get you there, I got this.”
With a bit of dramatic flair, Ardian pulls back a cloth from a brass device about 2’ in diameter and about 3’ high. It’s a complicated device, made up of gears and some dials. It weighs about 150 pounds.
”This is pretty cool, if’n I do say so myself. With this, I can set it and it will guide you to where you need to be. Let’s get this thing fixed on your ship - Rainard said you folks have your own ship. I’m gonna need some help lifting this thing, it’s pretty heavy.”
“Hey Rainard, bring a cart around!”
Assuming you agree, you all return to the dock area. Ardian will hire a large boat to take you all and the device out to your ship. He will see to bolting it on, suggesting a location near the ship’s wheel. If you are ready to leave, he will seem to cast a spell and the dials and gears will fly to a new heading as a large brass arrow continually points in a specific direction.
Once this is done, Ardian and Rainard look ready to leave.
Ramsey looks quite puzzled by all of this, but remains quiet and ready for your orders.

Kiwina is beginning to suspect that Ardian's outburst at the notion of his friends going through Ardian's texts was a convenient distraction letting Ardian avoid answering serious questions about the Petals risking their lives and those of the crew on some wild artifact chase. There's a simple way to cut through the doubt. "Ardian, we have a fine crew and I do not like risking their lives on a rather flimsy story. Would you answer a simple question and let Pantheon advise me as to your honesty?"
If Ardian agrees, Kiwina will present his holy symbol and attempt a truth test, asking, "Is the course of action you are advising us to take to the best of your knowledge the action most likely to enable us to successfully defeat the Deep?"

However, the justicar must be holding his holy symbol and concentrating on a target creature for this ability to function. If the target is deliberately lying or trying to mislead the justicar, the symbol glows with a pure white light. If the target is telling the truth, or wins the sense motive check, or unknowingly tells a lie, the symbol stays dark.

Mak saw to Elmer but as he did so he thought to ask. "Once the ship is beneath the waves will it's crew and cargo be able to breathe?"
DM Mark - Ardian and Jennis Wednesday March 23rd, 2022 1:44:37 PM Wil asks how long it will take to reach Jennis and what the test might be? Elyas asks, "Are all of the missing keys underwater? Why is it so important that we get the ship enchanted first instead of searching for the missing keys?” Later, he watches intently as Ardian sets the device and tries to discern what kind of magics are being used and if he could replicate this. Rolth ticks off the steps to finding and defeating the Deep as Ardian has proposed them. Kiwina says he is worried this is a flimsy story and asks permission to cast a spell to discern the truth of what Ardian is saying. Son Imod feels a bit rushed and says he too would like to know the result of Kiwina’s divination. Tsak competes with Mak for the most impressive stance award. Falco also feels hurried. He asks Ardian how long the party might be underwater. Mak checks on Elmer and finds his horse is fine. He asks how those on the ship will breathe while it is underwater?
Responding to the questions he says, ”There are five keys. Or more precisely, the key that seals the creature's prison was broken into five items. And like I said, I think that prison is failing. Why get the ship enchanted? Well, some of these places are pretty deep and hard to get to. You’ll need to be underwater to find what you’re looking for and I don’t think it’ll be enough to just sail to a place and dive down and look around. Breathing shouldn't be a problem so long as you stay on the ship. Once you leave the ship, you’ll need to hold your breath or have some magical means of surviving. How long? Beats me.”
Ardian replies to Kiwina’s request for permission to cast a truth telling spell. He waves at Kiwina’s holy symbol as he presents it. “Bah - put that away.”
He continues to both Kiwina and Son Imod, ”Flimsy story? A flimsy story, you say. Well, tell me what you know about this thing and where to find it! And you think I’m lying to you? You’d better think twice about using any divination magics on me or on any folk here in Fargunia - you can wind yourself in jail right quick for that you know. I oughta know. They don’t look too kindly on people that keep a lot of books and knowledge and try to find out secrets in this place. And they watch folk that come to see me. They already mistrust me here, but they won’t think twice about goin’ after you as newcomers - at best they’ll send you packing.”
Note that this does not prevent Kiwina from still holding the symbol and concentrating - Kiwina does not actually have to cast anything. If so, it does not glow but the effort is obvious to all. But you asked permission and this is his response.
(If things stop here, just let me know. I’m not trying to rush things - just trying to keep them interesting. Dialog in a play by post game has its challenges.)
If you still proceed, once on the ship, Elyas can tell: Highlight to display spoiler: { this is some sort of spell. It’s similar in ways to Find the Path, but it is not a spell he is familiar with. Once he is done, Ardian says, ”Ya see this big arrow? It’ll keep pointing to where you need to go. If you go too far, it’ll point back and that’s how you know you’re where you should be. Now, it won’t direct you back to me, but I figure you can handle that part.
“I haven’t been to Jennis’ tower myself, but I read about it. Not sure what sorta test he has. Maybe a puzzle. Or maybe just getting in to even see him is the test. Once Jennis enchants your ship, assuming he does, come back and I’ll tell you what these keys are that you gotta collect and set this for the first one you choose to go after.

The party seems divided.
Wil, Elyas, Rolth and Falco want to leave now. Son Imod, Tsak and Mak seem to want to wait a day or so. Kiwina seem to draw a line in the sand. He calls Ardian a stubborn, touchy old coot and says he should just take his navigational device back if he will not submit to the centaur’s divinations
Rainard looks very uncomfortable, glancing back and forth between Ardian and the party. ”No, these - these are good people. Good people. Saved me. I’m sure this can be….”
Ardian blinks a bit at Kiwina’s stance, and waves Rainard to silence. ”Well, I am old, I’ll give you that. Touchy and stubborn - that’s fair. But I’m not going with the coot part. Not quite sure what a coot even is, but it always sounds bad when folks say it.
“I’ve dealt with you adventurer types before. You all tend to be different. Some are nice, some are altruistic, some just want money. But if there’s one common thread, it seems to be this sort of arrogant self-righteousness - you just can’t handle not being in control of everything. You demand everyone submit to your will.
“Maybe this is good for you - to not know everything. It might even give you some humility. Truth be told, I could probably use some too.
“Well, you tell me what you want to do then. If you want more time, I can set this thing tomorrow or the next day. And if you want me to take it off your ship I will. I can probably give you directions to find Jennis without it - you any good with maps and charts? But finding them keys without this thing, yikes. I don’t really know how to give you underwater directions. That’s why I rely on magic.
“Maybe after you see Jennis, if you can get him to even help, maybe then you’ll trust me. Or maybe not.
“And if you’re just not up for this, I can probably see if maybe some of the Taur leaders want to take this on. From what I can tell, they stand the most risk from this thing. But I don’t trust political leaders. They tend to be worse than adventurers, and usually only seek their own ends.
“Well, what’ll it be?”

As you bring the ship around, you seem to at least be where this device has directed. You peer down, and all you see is ocean. Ramsey takes a sounding. ”Well, Captain Kiwina, ‘tis about about 80 feet deep here. But too deep to see what’s down there from here. Shall we set anchor?”
What preparations are made for your descent into the watery depths?

Tsak decides to leave Esmerelda aboard for this bit. His swimming is pretty good, but he's not really sure how far he can swim, 80' sounds a bit far on one breath. Tsak strips out of his armour and down to his breeches, boots and belt. He leaves his crossbow and backpack in his quarters. In his belt pouch he has the acorn and luckstone and a lv1 anything potion. His kukri is on his belt and his falchion is in it's scabbard as usual. He empties his sack and fastens it using a piece of rope across his chest and back in case he needs to carry anything back with him. Then he stands around looking nervous as he's not sure what to do next...

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (89/89HP | AC: 20; Touch: 14; CMD: 26) | Sunday March 27th, 2022 2:17:14 PM
Rolth recommends not dropping the anchor, because we don't know what is below and an anchor dropping through the ceiling of a wizard's coral tower probably will be unwelcome. The ship can use the steam-powered fan to sail in a very tight circle and maintain position here, while we dive down to the bottom. He is keen to have free action cast upon him, in case we need to fight or otherwise overcome physical obstacles, and of course will need water breathing. He reminds the Petals that we have some potions that can help in this situation too.

Kiwina chose his armor to be the best he could afford that would not impair his ability to swim. And he's not a bad swimmer. But Rolth's right that they need to have magic to help them underwater. "Rolth, I thought you and Falco claimed the potions we found for breathing underwater." Since he seems to recall someone saying they have the spell, that shouldn't be a problem.
His spells are not the usual, some of which won't work underwater (and some of which he must take anyway). Ranger 1 - Read magic, speak with animals Druid 0 - Detect magic, flare, guidance, light 1 - Obscuring mist, cure light wounds, faerie fire, shillelagh 2 - Fog cloud, chill metal, delay poison

DM Mark - "I have this sinking feeling." Monday March 28th, 2022 4:22:18 PM Tsak readies his gear for going underwater, leaving some items aboard the ship. Wil has some questions. He seems to think he’s going to stay on board and the ship will somehow sink. Rolth counsels against weighing anchor, lest it damage anything below. He goes over spells needed and potions available. Kiwina notes the spells and gear he and hte others have. Son Imod notes his helpful spells and tells the others what potions he has available as well. (Please make sure these potions are all listed on your character sheet - I could not find them. Also, it does not appear that he has any lifewood flasks on this character sheet. Did I overlook this?) Mak stowes his bow, intending to rely on hand weapons underwater. Falco likewise notes his spells. Elyas laments his lack of underwater spells, but notes what he plans to cast.
The Petals discuss various options and spells that could be cast. Ramsey asks Kiwina, ”Captain, you want I should drop an anchor or should we try to sail in circles while you’re gone? Also, how long will you all be gone?”
How heavily or lightly are each of you weighted down as you enter the water? Also, please note if you have a swim speed granted by some spell or ability. Be sure to note for your character what spells are active on you.
Each PC may make one roll, either Survival or Knowledge Nature, to reveal the following:
Survival DC 15 or Knowledge Nature DC 12: Highlight to display spoiler: {Unless you are weighed down by 20 pounds or more in gear, you will need to swim down to the ocean floor. This will also be needed to “walk” along the ocean floor instead of swimming. See swim checks and movement under Aquatic Terrain.}
Survival DC 20 or Knowledge Nature DC 17: Highlight to display spoiler: {You know there are usually currents underwater just as there are winds and breezes on land. Characters descending to the ocean floor may become separated unless they have some means of staying together. Unless you have some anchor point (anchor line, heavily weighted rope) descending to the ocean floor may not place you where the ship stopped. Similarly, ascending back up to the ship may place you rather far from it when you reach the surface.}
Actually, dropping the anchor might make it easier for us to swim down to the bottom and navigate back to the boat. I'm sure any wizard worth his salt has a way to make sure we don't wreck his castle with our anchor. Also should we tie ourselves together, loosely in a line so no-one gets lost?
Seeing the others get ready Tsak is now wondering whether he should actually wear his mithril breastplate. Has anyone done this before? My first time. Not sure what equipment I should take...

Son Imod is carrying 96 pounds of Gear but still at a light load being a strong large minotaur with double carrying capacity. He removes anything that will be ruined by exposure to the sea water from his pack but that should still leave him with at least the 20 pounds of gear needed to reach the bottom.
He says, "Two things. Firstly if we aren't going to swim / walk along the ocean floor we will need at least 20 pounds of gear each. Secondly we need either the anchor line or some kind of weighted rope so we don't get separated in our descent down or separated from the Rose when we want to come up as there are currents down there."

DM Mark - “Anchors away." Tuesday March 29th, 2022 8:06:39 PM Tsak wonders a bit about what gear to bring. He advocates for dropping anchor and perhaps using a rope to keep the party together as they descend. Kiwina agrees and directs Ramsey to drop anchor. Rolth and Mak are ready to go. Son Imod tells everyone to carry at least 20 pounds of gear to allow them to walk along the seafloor. He casts Freedom of Movement on himself, offering to others as well. Wil gladly accepts Freedom of Movement from Son Imod. He casts Water Breathing on himself. Falco casts Freedom of Movement on himself and Rolth, and then casts Water Breathing on all but Wil and Kiwina. Elyas grabs a few things to make sure he has enough weight on him to walk along the seafloor.
Ramsey says, ”I’m glad we’re dropping anchor Captain. I didn’t look forward to sailing in circles with only that brass contraption to rely on.” He directs the sails furled and drops anchor. With a splash the anchor sinks pulling the anchor chain along with it.
Each hanging on to a rope, the Petals jump into the water. Well, all by Kiwina hang on the rope. As the centaur enters the sea a strange thing happens - he transforms into a manta ray, gliding gracefully through the water on wing-like fins. With a swim speed of 60’ and both blindsense and low light vision, he has no problem keeping up with the rest of those whose descent is guided by the anchor chain.
As you sink, you find you are on a rocky and sandy floor. Small poofs of debris are stirred where you feet fall, though not enough to cause any problem visually. You look about and rocks loom out of the murky depths here and there.
Kiwina in particular seems very at home in these depths. Gliding effortlessly, the ranger swims ahead a bit. His expertise in this terrain is rewarded and he soon notes what appears to him to be an unnaturally uniform mound of coral.
It is a large, squat structure, roughly 80’ in diameter rising 40’ above the sea floor. The whole thing appears to be made of living coral and wrinkled stone, with bits of plant life clinging to it and small fish darting in and out of little crevices here and there.
There is a clear entryway with two large stone doors. Carved into the coral are two large images. Each seems to resemble an underwater creature with large eyes and gills on the sides of their heads, though they lack careful detail. They have carved arms at their sides, one arm downward, the other bent so that a webbed hand is held flat, about waist high with the palm facing up.
Just to be clear, this is a magical world. We’re not going to worry about pressure at these depths nor getting the bends as you ascend. While it is true that salt water will rust iron weapons and generally wreck leather and such over time, with spells like Mending and Prestidigitation this is easily remedied.

DM Mark - "Do we just knock, you think?" Thursday March 31st, 2022 10:58:18 PM Rolth casts Detect Magic, concentrating on the structure before him. Kiwina, Falco and Son Imod abandon the rope tying all together and move up. Tsak and Mak remain secured together and also move up. Elyas also moves up, lagging in the back and secured with the others.
(There was an error. That was not a summoned shark, only a shark that happened by and moved on.)
For the sake of brevity, three rounds pass. Rolth can tell that there are a few sources and several auras. He can sense abjuration magic all around the building and the doors. He can sense abjuration, enchantment and universal magic associated with the carved figures that flank the doors. (I skipped the spellcraft rolls since Elyas could also cast this, as could others.)
The currents here are not strong enough that you need to remain roped up, but you may if you want to.
Please move yourself as appropriate or let me know where you are - I will assume you are where you are on the map. Please note if you are under the effects of Freedom of Movement.

Tsak (with Mak, who he is tied to) makes his way slowly toward the structure, staying a little further away than Kiwina and Rolth. (OOC I moved both of us on the map) He's still getting used to the movement under water using the spell, and kinda wants to get his falchion out and swing it around a little - but that might look bad if any guards spot it. He settles for waiting, sure that Son Imod, Rolth, Kiwina or Wil will do something soon.

Rolth is fine with Wil looking for traps, then someone knocking on the door as a first step in figuring out what comes next. He waits patiently to see what happens, hoping that no one gets blown up.
DM Mark - Investigations Friday April 1st, 2022 10:52:03 PM Son Imod wonders if the carved figures should be talked to or checked for traps. Tsak and Mak move up, ready for a threat. Wil move up to 10’ from the door. He checks for traps, looking at the door and the entryway, including both carved figures. He does not detect any traps. (I moved Wil up as I had said three rounds had passed.) Elyas prepares to cast Haste if “something comes up.” (Note that this does not count as “readying an action” which requires specifying the specific conditions that would trigger the action.) Kiwina thinks knocking on the doors is a good idea. Rolth agrees that someone should knock on the door.
The party stands arrayed before what appears to be an entryway. With the departure of the shark, the smaller fish reemerge from the clefts and crevices why hid in. The ocean around you all is relatively quiet, save for the soft “whooshing” of the gentle currents here.
Though these currents here are not strong enough that you need to remain roped up, you may if you want to. As far as I can tell, only Tsak and Mak are tied together.
Please move yourself as appropriate or let me know where you are - I will assume you are where you are on the map. Please note if you are under the effects of Freedom of Movement.

Mak isn't to fond of the welcoming party, and shows his displeasure by stabbing CG 2. His first attack misses, but he lands his second blow.
Elyas begins summoning some back up.
Wil suggests finding the trigger, and than begins summoning also.
Rolth gratefully drinks the tonic Son Imod gave him, and suggests pulling away from the door. He wonders if doing so will stop the golems from attacking.
Kiwinas suggests that the trigger may have been just stepping towards the door. He looks for another entrance, but fails to find any. Of course a powerful wizard, like Jennis, doesn't necessarily need doors.
Son Imod tells Rolth to hold onto the flask so he can refill it later. He takes a 5 ft step back, and joins the summoning party.
Falco wonders if this is the test, than casts Bless on his friends.
Wil is perceptive enough to realize that the golems are protecting the doors, as Kiwina suggested. He can easily surmise based on how the events have unfolded, that they were activated when Rolth approached the doors. Whether or not they will stop attacking if the Petals retreat, as Rolth suggested, is hard to say since the Petals are still engaged in combat.
CG 1 continues to attack Tsak and manages to land both claws. His left claw does 13 damage, and his right claw does 15 damage.
CG 2 sees Wil and Son Imod casting spells, so it takes a 5 ft step towards them, and takes a swing at each, however, both claws fail to hit their target.
Tsak and Mak each take 6 bleed damage, since they haven't stopped the bleeding yet.

Mak was ticked off and knew he wasn't fast enough to run away or step back out of combat, but his sword arm was still in good shape so he lashed out at the Golem again. His sword scored against it twice as Mak faced off against an opponent that he could not escape. As his resolve hardened it was clear he was an Asilduran with death on the line indeed.

Mak is ticked that he can't retreat, so he stabs at #2 again.

(DR 10 adamantine) However, the elemental does manage to entrap the golem, sadly since we are underwater, it only lasts for 1d3 rounds, and I rolled a 1. Falco channels energy and promises more healing to Mak next round.
Elyas's ice elemental lands one of it's two slams, and even though CG 2 doesn't seem to take any physical damage, it does take the cold damage and the golem is staggered for a round. Elyas fires off some magic missiles against CG 2
CG 2, being both staggered and entrapped, even if it is only for this round, can't do anything this round.
CG 1 decides to attack the larger enemy found in Elyas's Ice Elemental. The golem lands both claw attacks, though the elemental's DR does absorb some of the damage. The elemental takes 7 damage from the first blow, and 11 from the second. Since all elementals are immune to bleed damage, the ice elemental doesn't take and, thanks to Falco's channel, Mak and Tsak don't either.
