An Unexpected Occurence


DM Steve -- Do you think it would like a piece of wood to burn or something?

Mortimer tries to hide his bucket of water, and asks Loryn if he thinks the elemental might like a piece of wood.
Mole hears Loryn and heads out. (2)
Loryn steps back five feet and tries to talk to the elemental, but is ready with a spell if it tries to attack.
Drack enjoys a drink until he hears Loryn’s shout. Warning the others, he heads out. (2)
Ash doesn’t hear Loryn, but he does hear Drack. He follows. (2)
Manolo is upstairs in his room, and doesn’t hear Loryn or Drack.
Torrynashkabbeth turns back when she hears the commotion. (3)

Loryn and Mortimer watch the elemental flicker and dance for a moment, before it moves away towards the hedgerow. When it moves, it’s pretty fast.

There wasn't much else to do, but make her way forward. Torryn headed towards the fairground at a steady pace. There was no point in sprinting and arriving so out of breath she could do nothing to help.

Mortimer tells Loryn to send the thing back before he casts ray of frost.
Loryn chases after the creature until Mortimer’s suggestion penetrates, then tries to use the ring to send it back.
Drack hurries. (2)
Mole heads towards the fairgrounds, but is slower than Drack. (2)

The ray of frost scores on the elemental, which flinches and turns around. The fire races up to Loryn and attacks him. It hits AC 15 for 4 points of damage and make a DC 11 fortitude save or take 1 additional point.

Employing an archaic hand sign for arcane magic, Mortimer traces a circular shape in the air in front of him while he speaks old draconic words of power. A circular form of his own shadow appears in front of him, liken to the shape of a shield.

"Get behind me Loryn!" He then taunts the fire elemental to attack him instead, "Come on Baby Spark ... Light my FIRE!" He then spits at what could be its face.

When Mortimer took a step between Loryn and the elemental, he naturally became its next target. The elemental attacks, barely missing (hits AC 16). But Mortimer’s spell thwarts it.

Drack and Ash reach a corner of the fairgrounds.

What was that light? There was definitely something strange ahead. However, at her present distance, there really wasn't much she could do other than continue her loping jog. After this, she was definitely going to be walking the rest of the way home!

Loryn was not going to simply hide behind Mortimer however, and wait to be rescued. Loryn moves back and south and fires another ray with the same results that he always has

Ash fires off a magic missile as soon as he can.
Mortimer continues to taunt the elemental.

Loryn tries another ray, but it does not connect.
Mole pauses for a breather, then starts again.
Drack draws his weapon and gets as close to the elemental as he can.

Injured by Ash’es spell, the elemental retreats into the hedgerow. (Mortimer can make an attack of opportunity as it goes, if he has a weapon ready.) The hedgerow around it begins to smoke and wilt.

Mole reaches one edge of the fairgrounds, Torryn gets to another.

Manolo is approaching from the east. He heads out of the boarding house. Next round he will pass the keep – after that, a bit of town and the road to the fairgrounds.

(OOC: The DM has seen a trend in the game. . . a LOT of splitting up the party. ;-) Leads to a good bit of running, I guess.)

She was close now, but even at this proximity she couldn't determine what all the fuss was about. Surely though, that hedge wasn't meant to be smoking like that? Whatever was happening, the hedge was the focus of Loryn, Ash and Morty's attention.

Fortunately continued to approach. As she did, she saw the burning "thing" move in the hedge!
. A living fire? Whatever next? Her first thought was to use her spear, but that would likely necessitate getting burnt. She'd use her Fey Spark once she was close enough.

Unfortunately, Mortimer wasn't armed with his sickle, so the elemental flees unscathed. By the time he reaches for it, the living flame had already entering the hedge. With bucket in hand, he starts to give chase.

Then out of nowhere, Drack charges in with a devastating attack. He looks around to see if the others were arriving.

Mortimer chases after the elemental.
Mole surveys the scene and approaches.
Loryn makes some observations on the ring after he is again unable to force the creature back into it.
Torrynashkabbeth notices Loryn, Ash, and Mortimer are focused on the hedge, then notices the fire.
Drack charges at the elemental, striking it as he reaches the hedge.
Manolo keeps running.
Ash casts another magic missile.

Between Dracks onslaught and Ash’es spell, the fire seems to be snuffed out. The hedge has a little damage, but did not catch fire itself. Everyone is able to gather and examine the scene without the appearance of more than a wisp of smoke from the singed twigs.

Dorata, one of the four town guards, comes jogging up. ”What’s going on here? Ya’ll ran past the Keep like a pack of dogs chasing a meal,” she asks. She seems more curious than worried.

Mortimer turns to face Dorata, with his WLA badge in full view, and does his best to answer her questions; but not before giving Drack and others a wink. (Bluff: 15)

He sets his water bucket down and begins his explanation. "We were conducting a magical experiment and training exercise. All seemed to go as planned." He then turns back to the group, "By the way everyone ... EXCELLENT response time! I believe that was a new record." Back at Dorata, he adds, "Your participation, while unnecessary, was brilliant as well."

Mole realizes he ran all the way for nothing, and needs a drink.
Drack expects Loryn and Mortimer to give the explanation.
Ash smirks and makes sure there are no embers or flames.
Mortimer explains they were conducting a magical experiment and training exercise.
Manolo admits he doesn’t know what happened.
Loryn stays quiet.

Dorata is happy with Mortimer’s explanation, but offers a little advice. ”Ok, but be careful with your experiments. Don’t want folks thinking of you like they think of Heorstan.”

Know local DC 10 (can try untrained): Highlight to display spoiler: {In fact, local opinions of Heorstan vary. Heorstan is full of half-baked ideas about which he gets very enthusiastic. Frequently they work, and there is no one in town he has not helped with some unexpected notion. However, they also often do not work, and have been known to fail spectacularly. There are several people in town who feel he is more of a menace than a benefit. They point to close calls where people escaped being hurt only by luck.}

There is no fire, and not much evidence that there almost was one. Dorata heads off after being told everything’s okay. The rest of the day passes uneventfully, barring any explanations Loryn provides the rest of the group.

Torryn smiled reassuringly at Dorata. Before heading home she ascertained why she'd been running. The matter though was closed.

Donating the money was as problematic as she'd expected, but eventually she convinced her parents to accept 100 gold coins. She stayed for a meal and then went back to the boarding house.

"Shall we tackle the water gremmies once all our magic is restored or is it dangerous to leave them any longer than is absolutely necessary?"

Loryn rocks a bit on his heels as Mortimer 'explains' the situation. Clever Mortimer, very clever. Might be some gnome somewhere along the line he thinks to himself. Loryn slips the Ring back off of his finger and ponders what he knows, which is not too much, but enough to be dangerous. He steps over to the hedge and taps out a small scorched section of grass with his foot. "I wonder how far away I could get it." he muses aloud, though really to himself.

"I still suggest you get a set of Leather armor Drack. If you go in, none of us can pull you out."

Loryn heads back with everyone and plans to have a last drink by the fire and then head to bed, barring party business

“Fine” grunts Drack in response to Loryn’s suggestion. “One of you all see if you can get ahold of a net that will suit our purposes.”

Drack will head out around town to see if he can find a set of leather armor. Otherwise he will have to make a lengthy trip to the catacombs again.

Mortimer is quite proud of himself; crisis averted. He sniffs the air with satisfaction ... and catches a whiff of something delightful. Something savory, like meat cooking over an open flame. Mortimer feels his stomach grumbling as his appetite awakens. He turns in the direction of the meaty, fire-kissed delight. He sees only Loryn in that direction, tapping out the last flickers of the elemental. Loryn was slightly seared by the elemental, he thinks. Maybe with the right seasoning ... NOO, NO, he keeps telling himself. Mortimer is NOT going through that again! It took him forever to get THAT monkey off his back. Gnomes were NOT on the menu!

"Well ... nothing to see here! Feeling quite peckish, I am. Goin' back for a bite then off ta bed." He wonders if Heorstan has anything that would scare gremlins out of the water ... like a water moccasin or a shocker lizard or something.

Mortimer is proud of himself for handling Dorata. He’s also hungry. He wonders if Heorstan has anything that would scare the gremlins out of the pool.
Torrynashkabbeth donates money to her parents. She asks the group about dealing with the water gremlins.
Ash would prefer to recover spells before chasing gremlins.
Loryn admires Mortimer’s quick thinking and ponders the ring. He suggests Drack might want leather armor if they’re going to fight gremlins in a pool.
Drack explains about Heorstan. He talks about getting a net, and is persuaded to look for leather armor.
Manolo arrives to hear about Heorstan, which he already knew.
Mole is quiet.

The group heads back to the boarding house. They make plans and look for gear. It is getting on towards noon the next day before they are ready to head back to the caves – in part to let folks recover their spells, but mostly to find suitable leather armor. (A fishing net is not hard to find.)

As twigs and branches snap under their feet, sunlight scatters through the swaying trees above. A breeze carries with it the scent of fallen leaves and moist soil. The path takes them quickly to the top of the ridge above the cave. They navigate the steep and narrow trail down to it without mishap. Once there, they need to arrange themselves to go in.

"If you like, I can lead the way. I can call forth my Get Armour, which ought to make me difficult to hit. I can also see quite well in the gloom. Plus, as a Sacred Dancer, I can sense if there's anything profane close by.". Fortunately didn't mind if someone else wanted to lead, but felt that she should offer.

If chosen to lead she will invoke her mage armour.

Before heading out to find leather armor, Drack will lay hands on Loryn to heal up the injuries caused by the fire elemental. Doing it twice to heal 7hp of damage. "No sense you heading out tomorrow already hurt."

Drack searches around town, and finally finds a suitable set of leather armor in case he ends up going swimming. Drack will hand the seller 10 gp, and thank him for the armor.

Upon waking the next morning, Drack will pray to Domi, and recover the full allotment of his lay hands. He will then don the leather armor with the rest of his gear and ask Minerva to store his breastplate for him until he returns.

Upon reaching the ridge, Drack responds to Torry. "I'll take point Torry. I prefer it. What do you think Loryn? Manolo first to check to see if the little gremlins that escaped reset any of those traps, or made new ones? Or should I just lead on and look for them. If i spot any, Manolo can take a try and shutting them off."

"I'll go in third. I can detect natural pits and deadfalls. Any traps set by the gremlins remaining will probably be a naturally built trap. Drack, I can harden your body to give you some more defense. It only last a couple of minutes, so I'll wait until it's needed."

Once the group begins moving into the cave, Mole will cast Detect snares and pits. As they Mole will maintain his concentration forward.

Mortimer does his normal morning prep. He has a filling, healthy breakfast. There shouldn't be any unwanted cravings today. He feels good. He doesn't recall hearing or seeing any phantoms during the night. Things are looking up. That's a good sign. He only wishes he had enough money for that ultra lightweight chain shirt he saw in the Catacombs. It was so shiny; made from that special metal. It would have looked impressive ... and protect him everything that wished him harm.

When they make their way back to the cave, he is fine with Drack's and Loryn's lineup suggestions. He was glad to get out of the morning sun. It irritated him; the bright sunlight.

Ash is ready to go.
Mortimer is glad to be getting out of the sunlight.
Manolo looks for traps. He prefers to be near the back of the marching order.
Torrynashkabbeth offers to lead the way.
Mole also gets some gear. He offers to take the third position in case there are natural traps.
Drack heals Loryn before they go looking for gear, and wears his new leather armor for this excursion. He prefers to take the lead, and debates whether Manolo should look for traps first.
Loryn proposes a marching order. He also talks about how to tackle the gremlins in the pool.

Manolo finds no traps near the entrance, and the others file in behind him. Mole laughs gently at something Drack says. In the first room, there are questions about Manolo’s place in the lineup, since he prefers not to stay at point. Also, the entrance is lit enough, but further into the caves only Mole is likely to see anything.

Although he doesn’t find a trap, Manolo is convinced that something is different about the area. It takes a moment to put his finger on it, but he thinks that the nest in the corner over there (in S-8) is different somehow. Mole is able to confirm this, saying that it is covered in a fungus he doesn’t remember seeing here. But he recognizes it, and it's harmless.

It seemed as good a time as any to invoke her magical protection. So Torryn did so. With her Fey Shield in place she was a far more challenging target than was Drack. It was why she'd offered to lead, but was not about to argue over it. After all, Drack was far stronger and tougher than she was.

Torryn opened her Fey Sight. This time though, she wasn't looking for magic. Others could do that and likely better than she. No, now she was seeking the presence of any poisons!

At Drack's suggestion and Manolo's perceptive eye, Loryn agrees, "We should check out what's going on here and make sure we don't have enemies at our back.

Loryn positions himself to be able to make a 5' move in and catch the nest in a Color Spray which he readies if anything comes out of the nest.

For some reason, after coming back a second time, he seems more attuned to the spirits that linger here in the dark. Their whispers tell him things he otherwise could not see.

Loryn strikes up a torch for light. He plans to save his light spell. He agrees with Drack’s suggestion to poke around this nest.

Torrynashkabbeth invokes her fey shield and looks around with her fey sight. She’s ready to check the nest if that’s what the group wants.

Drack asks about poking around in the nest with a spear, and proposes checking out the wall that the little gremlins escaped into before tackling the ones in the pool.

Torryn does not see anything poisonous in the area, and Manolo does not see any traps. Torryn pokes the nest with her spear, but does not discover anything concerning. With the lights resolved, everyone will be able to see as they proceed deeper into the caves. Several have suggested going to room where they had their last skirmish first, to look at the wall that the smaller gremlins escaped into. That wall had crevices that a small creature (like Loryn) could squeeze into, which most of the party would not be able to navigate at all. If the party wants to head directly there – carefully, of course – they remember the way well enough.

"Let us move on then. There is nothing here: at least, not at the moment. I'll keep looking for poison - just in case." Torryn was all for moving directly to the end wall in order to ascertain whether any of the tiny Dark fey yet remained.

It was interesting; so much seemed to have changed since she was last here. Enjoying as she now did the sponsorship of Eberyon and Flower, she felt more confident. So, spear in hand, she pressed on. To test her newfound abilities, she switched focus. Was there evil lurking nearby? She reached out with her senses.

Mole tells Mortimer the fungus just glows faintly if it’s disturbed. But it’s so faint that even in torchlight you can’t see it.

The group is able to bypass the chamber with the pool and make it to the chamber where their last fight was, without incident. This chamber is much as they left it, again with a light growth of fungus on the remains of the gremlins’ bedding areas.

Mortimer theorizes about mushrooms and realizes the gremlins could be hiding magically.

Torryn does not find poison or evil in the area. Mole sees no gremlins, and neither he nor Manolo sees obvious signs of recent activity. Mortimer finds no magic in the area except that he expects from his companions.

Before he has gone far, Loryn finds himself in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. Within twenty feet, he can no longer see the room the others are in, although he can still hear them easily. He doesn’t see an end to the passages in front of him as they twist and split. Clearly, the rest of the group cannot fit through these crevices, which are frequently tight for Loryn.

It was challenging to remain calm, but Torryn followed a few breathing exercises that Agratha had taught her and then feeling a little more relaxed scanned around , in a circle, seeking to ascertain if anything vile was approaching.

With one end of the rope in hand, Loryn hops back through and pushes his exploration a bit further. He tries to keep his bearing so that for the most part he is heading in one direction. Nevertheless, he only gets so far in the twisty maze of little passages before he is out of rope. There is no sign of the tiny gremlins in the area, although he tries several ways. His best guess is that this was maybe an escape route. As far as he can get, it does not seem livable.

Nothing untoward had happened. There were no panicked shouts or cries of pain. Perhaps more importantly, she'd detected no encroaching evil. So Torryn did her best to wait patiently. Waiting though, wasn't her forte. She decided to head back, away from the wall, not far, but ready should anything approach from the path they'd taken. Really, it was just being active that helped quell her restlessness and impatience.

Loryn heads back and tells the group what he found. As they head to the water gremlins, he prepares a few spells.

The group prepare to creep toward the pool with nets and extra light. At this distance, they can make out a pile of something at the water’s edge that had not been there before.

Torryn studied the pile of debris. It sat in the gloom near the edge of the torch's light, but that wasn't an issue for her.

Mole moves up to the wall (See map). He takes out a piton and his hammer and drives the piton into the stone (noted by map). Making sure it is completely secure, he turn to the others "Run some rope through the piton, that can be our anchor. Then Drack and Manolo move closer while me and another holds this end. We give'em slake as they need it." He says gauging the groups response. "Manolo can check for traps and other dangers, and Drack....well, is there to do Drack things."

Mortimer was assuming they were going to use a hand-thrown fishing net. Like what the fishermen use along the shoreline. He isn't familiar with this type. He watches, from a distance, as the others set it up. It looks like they are planning on bringing in a huge haul, but these tiny gremlin can't weigh more than 10 pounds a piece soaking wet. He could be wrong. He doesn't know enough to offer any advice, so he trusts that his friends know what they're doing.

Mortimer decides to ready his own plan of attack. (Perception: 9)

Mole fastens a rope to a piton he stuck in the wall, so that they can use it to pull Drack away from the pool if need be.
Manolo look for surprises, but prefers to be further back than Drack requested.
Loryn has the nets prepared and casts dancing lights above the water.
Mortimer watches the preparations of the others, a bit unsure of the plan, and readies a spell himself.
Torrynashkabbeth studies the pile of debris.
Ash helps hold the rope.
Drack ties the rope off and asks Manolo to check the area from behind him.

As the party approaches the pool, Torryn realizes the debris near the pool is the remains of gremlins, some half eaten. Probably the ones they killed last time they were here. So the bedding has become food for the mushrooms, but the gremlins themselves have become food for their own kind.

Torryn also notices some eyes break the surface of the water. These water gremlins are an ugly combination of lobster and dog. She barely has time to shout a warning before Drack is covered in a thin layer of water that appears from nowhere.

Drack must make a DC 10 Reflex save to evade the water. Failure means Drack is encased in the stuff and effectively entangled.

Mortimer may cast his spell if he wishes prior to other actions.

The creature ducks back under the water.

Now was the time for the Fey Shield. Torryn would trust to her magic. With the spell in place she intended to snatch up a net and ensnare a water gremlin.

NB: I've not adjusted the header yet. AC will become 24 if the spell comes off.

At present Torryn was only average at best in a fight. She wasn't tough. She wasn't strong. Yet she was swifter than most and did not lack courage. So she again unhesitatingly launched herself into the fray.

Drack sidesteps the watery goo trying to encase him(reflex save 20), and assuming he isn't yanked backwards by Mole, will cast the net where the gremlins had popped up their heads, in the manner they had hopefully been instructed when they got the net.

Mortimer's shield materializes as soon as he sees their eyes staring back at him. And there they were ... the bodies. His instincts were correct. No one leaves around that much meat and not expect others to show up for dinner.

He eagerly moves up next to Manolo to get a better look. IF he can see the water gremlin, he will shoot a ray at the aquatic, bog feeder ... but not the usual frosty one. A black, coruscating ray springs from his hand.

Torrynashkabbeth casts her fey shield and grabs the second net, ready to use it when she can.
Mole pulls the rope to assist Drack, but slacks off before pulling Drack back a step
Drack easily avoids the watery goo. He tries throwing a net at the gremlins. Let’s assume this is the net with the light spell.
Manolo gets in a defensive stance.
Mortimer moves up and casts a ray of enfeeblement spell.
Loryn is quiet.

Drack throws the net. As the lighted net enters the water, those with a decent angle can see into the water clearly. Mortimer tries his spell on G1, but misses.

A second gremlin pops up long enough to try the water trick on Torryn. Ash releases his spell.

In addition to actions this coming round:
* Drack needs to make a roll to hit the gremlin. The net is an exotic weapon and the target creature is underwater. So apply a non-proficiency penalty and a 20% miss chance. At least it’s a ranged touch attack, which will help.
* Torryn needs to make a DC 10 Reflex save to evade the water. Failure means she is entangled and encased in the stuff.
* Ash needs to roll damage on G2 for his magic missile.

Ash casts a second magic missile.
Mortimer tries to snap Manolo out of his panic, and tries to help Torryn.
Manolo starts to panic.
Drack confirms that he missed the gremlin with the net, and hauls it back. He checks to make sure Torryn isn’t in trouble.
Torrynashkabbeth tried to evade the water, but failed. Not panicking, she now plans how to escape it.
Loryn casts ray of acid, but misses the gremlin.
Mole is quiet.

Ash’es two spells leave the one gremlin floating in the water, unmoving. It appears to be dead.

Aided by her companions, Torryn may make another DC 10 Reflex save, this one at +2. Success means she has escaped he water.

When Drack pulls the net back, he brings the light out of the water. People can no longer see what’s beneath the water surface in the pool. The surviving gremlin does not show itself this round.

He turns back to the remaining water gremlin and attempts to do the same. A frosty rays shoots from his hand.

Drack gets his net ready for another throw, although he will use it to light the pool again if asked to.
Ash picks up a rock, casts light on it, and tosses it into the pool.
Mortimer worries about Manolo. He casts ray of frost at the water gremlin.
Loryn has the dancing lights dip into the pool to light it.
Torrynashkabbeth, with Mortimer’s help, escapes the water. Sensing evil in the water, she knows the general area to throw the net.
Manolo tries to calm himself. The others are okay.

With multiple sources of light in it, it is once again possible to easily see into the pool. As Ash’es rock sinks to the bottom, he realizes the pool is quite deep – at least thirty feet. There’s a shadow in one corner of the pool, where it recedes under the wall (darker blue on the map).

As Mortimer’s ray connects with the gremlin, he realizes he did well to hit it. Where the ray intersected the water, it appeared to bend.

For its part, the gremlin retreats from the dancing lights, sinking lower into the pool. Quite probably, it realizes what happened to its companion could happen to it.

Thirty feet deep! That was undeniably beyond the reach of her net. yet it wasn't beyond her reach; not with her spear. Torryn smiled. This was exciting. More then that, it was what Sacred dancers were meant to do: stop evil from threatening the innocent. She took a deep breath, ran forward and dived into the icy water. Luckily she'd been training with Agratha and did not expel the valuable air she'd taken in as the shock of the cold hit her. She was equally fortunate that she wore so little: there was less to slow her progress downwards.

Sadly Torryn's enthusiasm had once again surpassed her abilities: at least in so far as swimming was concerned. It really wasn't her strong suit. However, her confidence in the protection accorded to her by her patrons was unflinching. What choice did she have but to risk her life for those that had done no ill? Whilst that sounded all very grand and noble, the truth was, Torryn hadn't even considered such things. The gremlin was eviul. It needed to die. Her spear would accomplish that task.

Loryn quips, "That's the spirit Drack." as the fighter grumbles and dives in. He might complain, but there was no questioning the young paladin's heart. Torry as well, but there was also no questioning her forward thinking, it apparently didn't exist.

Loryn smiles, the next few years or decades were going to not be dull.

The gnome lowers the Dancing lights spell to the bottom and moving up to the edge of the pool, he slides them back as the pair swim down.

Mortimer is a bit shocked by this unexpected turn of events. He just got through saving Torryn from some water magic ... then jumps right into the pool. He looks back at the others with disbelief. Of course, Jack goes tumbling after ... 'or was it Jill,' he thought. "I don't know," he blurts out to no one in particular? It's been a long whil since he read poetry. 'Jack grew teeth and bit her feet 'cause Jill's blood tasted sweeter.' "Yeah, that's it!"

He hears Mole speak a language he's never heard before. However he can hear the power in the words. The water begins to ripple and undulate before rushing off, leaving a swirl in its wake.

"Mole .. what was THAT?!"

Mortimer walks up to the waters edge and looks down, trying to spot who he can. He begins to cast a spell of his own. The words puff of frost on the air. The flesh of his right hand bursts into a dull blue and bitterly-cold energy. The black silhouette of the bones in his hand and wrist can be seen within.

Drack dives into the pool after Torryn, but first tells the others to be ready to pull him out in a few.
Ash readies a magic missile.
Torrynashkabbeth takes a deep breath and dives into the pool. She intends to strike the gremlin with her spear, but remembers too late that she isn’t practiced at swimming.
Loryn, seeing Torryn and Drack, realizes his life is not going to be dull. He lowers the lights in the pool in a bid to help.
Mortimer is shocked at Torryn’s act. He casts chill touch and holds it ready for use.
Mole surmises his friends might be in trouble and takes the time to summon a water elemental.
Manolo is quiet.

The others can clearly see Torryn and Drack in the water, along with the lobstery monster and some sort of distortion of the water. The scene is brightly lit from below by the rock Ash threw in earlier, and from above by Loryn’s lights.

The gremlin gestures as Torryn and Drack approach, casting a spell. Drack is held back by the rope, only able to get halfway down into the pool. The gremlin moves back toward the far corner,

Torryn, make a Will save vs DC 10 or be affected by sleep. Under present circumstances, if she fails the Will save she will be unable to act this round and will also need to make a DC 12 Constitution check. If she makes the Will save, she may try to attack.

Drack and Torryn are underwater. To attack, each must make a DC 10 Swim check. This check will also allow them to move at one quarter of their normal rate. Attacks with a piercing weapon are normal; those with other weapons take a -2 penalty to hit and do half damage.

The gremlins gesture did not affect Torryn in the slightest. The water itself though; that was a different matter entirely. She thought that she'd just sink. After all, staying above water was difficult. yet with her lungs full of air, descending was not the easy matter she'd expected. Plus she also had one hand decidedly occupied in clutching her spear.

Mole has the water elemental attack the gremlin.
Torrynashkabbeth shrugs off the gremlin’s magic, but has trouble swimming.
Manolo shouts encouragement to Drack and Torryn.
Loryn confirms that Mole summoned a water elemental, and wonders how Drack will react.
Drack cuts the rope holding him so he can help Torryn.
Mortimer and Ash are quiet.

The gremlin recoils, though the group can’t really see what from, and heads down into the dark corner of the pool. It moves faster than Torryn or Drack can in water, but slower than an elemental.

Torryn and Drack are in no danger from the water yet, just having a little trouble getting their bearings.

Progress! Finally Torryn was able to comprehend some of the mysteries of moving through water. She moved deeper. She figured that if she got to the bottom, she'd be able to kick off to get back to the surface quickly. That however could wait. She still had enough air in her lungs. So with her spear leading the way she pressed on.

(OOC: It was stated that the gremlin was faster than Torryn, so I'm assuming that she cannot yet attempt an attack.)

Drack watches the gremlin go deeper, and hopes that just trying to get to it won't kill he and Torry, but since she continued, he has no choice but to do the same. He continues swimming downward after Torry(swim check 20), and makes some progress, staying right behind her. He tries to gauge how long it will take him to get to the gremlin, as he's not sure they will have enough air to make it back to the top if they get there and fight it.

While the elemental continues, Mole begins another chant "As an tìr, an t-uisge, an speur, agus an teine thig gu m' chòmhnadh..." As with the other chant, a small water elemental appears in the water once the chant is done.

Mortimer is looking around the pile of rubble for a hefty piece of stone, no more than a 20 pounds or more. One fit to hold that would send him quickly to the bottom of the pool. As he looks down into the water and makes ready to jump, he notices some distortion in the water beating the muck out of the gremlin. (Perception: 11).

He then looks back at Mole who then appears to summon another one of his water-based friends. With a shrug, Mortimer tosses the stone back into the rubble pile and states, "NOT on your nelly am I gettin' in the water with those two devils!" He is satisfied to stay on dry land and watch the beating from a distance.

Torrynashkabbeth finds her bearings and manages to swim about fifteen feet closer to the gremlin.
Mole summons another elemental while the first one attacks the gremlin.
Drack follows Torryn. He figures they will be on the gremlin after another round of swimming, and feels no ill effects from holding his breath as of yet.
Manolo looks to see what’s happening.
Mortimer picks up a heavy stone to weigh him down, then decides against jumping in the water.
Ash casts sleep on the gremlin.
Loryn is contemplative.

The cold cave water is very clear, and with the light at the bottom of the pool it is easy to see most of what goes on. The tiny gremlin in its dark corner is not as easy to see as Torryn and Drack, but Ash is easily able to target it. However, the sleep spell does not affect it. It is trapped, though, as Torryn and Drack close it. The elemental tosses the smaller gremlin around in the water, but does not seem to do a lot of damage. For its own part, if the gremlin is striking back it does not seem to have any effect on the elemental.

Torryn somehow maintained her progress. (Swim:18). Attacking in the alien element was another matter entirely. Her spear stabbed in roughly the correct area, but the gremlin was fast and easily avoided it. (AC: 11.)

She did her best to relax any muscles that she didn't require. The meditation training that she'd done with Agratha sprang to mind. There was no need to panic. Yet it wasn't panic that was ever the issue for Torryn. It was her over enthusiasm. She had a marked proclivity to act first and think second.

Loryn wills the Dancing Lights to move in right on top of Drack and Torryn. The pair have only been down there for about 20 seconds so he is not worried about them as long as they are moving and not asleep.

"Not much to do here but hope they can finish this in time." he supposes to mostly himself

Drack continues to try and swim with Torry, but doesn't go far (swim check 7. die roller is killing me.)

As he tries to swim deeper, and fails, he tries to pay attention to what is going on with the gremlin as it gets tossed around. Perception check 25.

Ash is a little pressed.. unsure if the gremlin was immune to sleep, or if it was strong vs the spell, the mage decided not to waste another spell. Plus he was sure the others had this under control.

At the water's edge, Mortimer is content to be a spectator in the remaining moments of the fight. In fact, he positions one of the larger stones in the rubble pile and uses it as a stool to sit upon. He occasionally turns his attention away from the pool because moments like this is when big bads like to sneak in behind them.

Ash, unsure why the sleep spell didn’t work, doesn’t cast more.
Mortimer sits and watches the fight. He also does a quick scan behind the group, to be safe.
Manolo shouts suggestions about where Drack should swim.
Torrynashkabbeth continues making progress, and is in position to attack.
Loryn sends the dancing lights to help Torryn and Drack.
Mole lets the elementals attack.
Drack tries to swim deeper, but ends up watching the gremlin.

As the corner where the gremlin is gets lit up, the group sees that it has more crevices like those the other gremlins escaped through in the previous battle. This gremlin may have been headed for those, but the elementals proved too much.

The gremlin continues to take damage as it is tossed in the water – more slowly than Mole would have expected. It fighting with a creature made of water in water makes the scene a bit confusing. Drack is able to make out where the elemental is by concentrating. By his estimate, the gremlin is almost done for. Meanwhile he can tell that it is fighting back, just not effectively.
