Underground, Panzer questions Silken. Zazu attempts to assist, but his attempts fall flat.
" Why kidnap the proxy to the councilor? What vote did you want swayed?"
"You haven't figured it out by now? It hardly matters. She'll never reach the council in time."
"What lies down the hallway here? How many of your guildmates will I need to kill to exit your underground sanctuary?"
"The hallway is empty. It leads to a room. The room is not empty, nor are the rooms beyond it. As I said before, every thief in the Guild stands between you and the exit."
"Do you have any value to them or do I free up my off hand now by killing you instead of dragging you along behind me? Seriously, you planned on there being a fight here, so I assume that you aren't an idiot and that you brought your best fighters along with you. They are all dead now so what chance does the rest of your guild have against us?"
"You're right, of course. You won't need me for a bargaining chip. Just walk through and defeat everyone you find. I'm sure you'll have no trouble."
" What did you give to Ena and when will it wear off?"
"I didn't give her anything. I believe Drow poison was used, but I don't know for sure."
Lothlo has heard of a secret headquarters known as the Den of Thieves, but its location and layout are a closely-guarded secret. Perhaps you're about to uncover it.
Ash suggests getting a move on. You don't know if--or when--other Guild members might come here looking for you.
Naithi suggests readying your defenses first.

Aboveground, the three companions pause and look around. Sahabiel points out that there may be ventilation shafts, and you may be able to locate them. Nightingale concurs, and Beech looks around.
[OOC: Sahabiel said night was "falling." Night fell some time ago. It is now quite dark. Humans would soon be seeking their beds, but this is an elven city, and elves don't need to sleep as humans do, so there is still some activity. The lighting is dim, though because--again--elves.]

He draws his main hand blade, grabs silken by one of the chains used to bind her. He drags her, not really in a gentle fashion, to the door and looks back at his companions. I will try my best to bottleneck them at a doorway or some other choke point and we just kill therm there. Concentrate fire and make sure each target is down before proceeding. Heal, rinse, repeat. Everyone ready?"

At Nightingale's question, looking back in the direction of the pub, and the distance they had walked from there, "Well, I'll be impressed if ya can?" She concedes that Nightingale has the sharper senses between them. "For me it wasn't all that distinctive even when I could see some of it filtering up, and that was in a kitchen where it stood out because it shouldn't smell of dirt there.. and here we are outdoors and there are patches of exposed soil all over the place?"
What Sahabiel asks the others to look for; If there is a vent or access hidden in the landscape, the contact of cold night air and any air vented from the underground complex where people are is going to mark itself with a light haze. And if the underground complex is connected directly to one of the houses, the tell will instead be that the chimney will be too active for a structure its size. Since they are searching for signs as a team, Sahabiel's perception check is an Aid Another to add onto Nightingale's. Sahabiel's passive perception > 10, so automatic success to add +2 to Nightingale's 20.

Ash takes one hand away from Ena for a moment and casts a Detect Poison cantrip. If she does in fact detect poison on Ena, Ash will then cast a Delay Poison spell on Ena. She's quickly burning through spells, but if Ena can defend herself it may help in the long run.

While the others are getting ready to head out, Lothlo decides to take a cursory look at the ceiling that caved in to get an idea of how far below ground they are, and how hard it would be to clear a path out going upwards. The dirt is likely very loose from the collapse, and it's possible that pulling down into the empty room would be a lot faster than digging out through the tunnel, especially with the help of an elemental.

Belatedly, Panzer gets the results of his Detect Magic spell. Silken had a +1 rapier and +1 studded leather armor, as well as a hand crossbow and some bolts. The halflings each had a +1 short sword and a Potion of Cure Light Wounds. They and the archers also had nonmagical armor and weapons. He drags Silken to the door and makes ready to open it.
Ash casts Delay Poison, and Ena becomes considerably less groggy--although she doesn't know where she is and doesn't remember very clearly what has happened.
Lothlo looks up at the ceiling, trying to ascertain whether pulling down more dirt would be a faster way to get out. You just can't be sure.
Naithi suggests determining a marching order. The hall is 5 feet wide, with walls, floor, and ceiling made of stone.
Zazu re-casts Message and makes a mental note to get some more scrolls.
Topside, Nightingale suggests using smell to try to find a ventilation shaft. Beech advises caution, as you don't want to look like suspicious characters hanging around peoples' houses. Sahabiel attempts to assist Nightingale in finding a ventilation shaft or an exit. You walk completely around the little group of houses, but are not able to locate anything. Either the shafts/exit are somewhere else, or they're well enough concealed that you are not finding them.

Ash slowly lets go of Ena to make sure she's capable of standing on her own. She then stands in front of the elf and looks her in the eyes, checking that she's able to focus. "Ena? It's Ash. Remember me? There's no time to explain the long story so I'll be quick. You've been abducted by the Thieves Guild and we're here to rescue you." It's no doubt a lot to take in, and she doesn't want to confuse the poor woman any more than she already is.
She looks over the pile of loot and picks up one of the suits of armor and a couple of daggers (if she can see any). Ash helps Ena put the armor on and fastens it for her. "This will protect you a bit." She then hands Ena one of the daggers. "We'll do our best to protect you but you should have this just in case. Stay next to me, ok?"
Ash looks to Naithi "It might be best if Ena and I take the rear and stay out of the way."

Pander tells Zazu that he can go first to look for traps but that he needs to vet a door and then return to a fighting spot. Pander plans on fighting on this side of any doorway to bottleneck his opponents and keep them from gaining flanking. Once they reach the first door he will set it ajar after Zazu says it is safe. He will then draw his off hand weapon and then draw attention to the door to get the people on the other side to open it.

Zazu examines the door for traps, but doesn't find any. It would be odd if he had, since the archer already opened it once with no ill effects.
Panzer props the door open, and Zazu can look down the hall. He doesn't see any traps there, either. The door at the other end of the hall remains shut.
Lothlo grabs his bow and makes ready to leave. Ash brings up the rear with Ena.
You begin to walk down the hallway in (I think) this order: Panzer, Zazu, Naithi, Lothlo, Ash/Ena. (Please let me know if that's not right.
Panzer--tries to get the people on the other side to open the door? I'm not sure I understood what you were doing.
Up top, Nightingale wonders aloud if there's a place you can rest. Beech just tries to avoid attention.
Sahabiel gives the situation some thought, and comes up with a couple of possibilities. You know there is a location called the Den of Thieves. You don't have specific confirmation, but it seems the secret tunnel in the Blue Shutters leads into an underground area of the Den of Thieves. There is probably an aboveground part, too.
Galen told you that the location is secret, and he didn't know it. The people most likely to know it, of course, are members of the Thieves' Guild, who are not your allies. But the current Thieves' Guild took over from the previous Guild, and Galen had said that some of the former members were still around, keeping a low profile to stay off the new Guild's radar. It's possible that Galen knows some of them; he was pretty cagey about it. It's also possible that he has discovered some new information, since he is also investigating Ena's disappearance.
Of course, given that Galen is still investigating, and time is short, it's unlikely you will find him at his house. It's hard to say where you might find him, or where his investigation may have taken him. If you could find him, though, he might be of some help.
Trying to find Galen is one possibility. Another possibility is to try to hirer a mage to Dimension Door you. After all, you have a pretty good idea of where you need to be, starting either from the tunnel under the Blue Shutters or the area behind the tavern where the cave-in happened. If you could just blip into the empty space beyond the cave-in (assuming there is one), it would just be a matter of catching up with the rest of the group. If there weren't all crushed to death in the cave-in, of course.
It's getting late, so it would be harder finding a mage now than it would be during the day. But this is an elven city, and late hours are not uncommon. You might be able to find somebody, and you estimate that the spell wouldn't cost more than about 400 gold.

Panzer thought we were already down the hall at the second door my bad. Pander turns over dragging Silken to Ena and Ash since he is about to need all of his hands. He waits for Zazu to look over this door although he assumes that inside their sanctuary the thieves would have no need of traps. Once she declares the door safe he makes sure the others are ready and opens it.

She regrets that her request to Galen from last time, to get them in touch with some of the members in hiding of the 'old' thieves' guild, had not really gone anywhere yet. They needed just such a person right now...
"Mister Galen is likely not wasting the evening either, fretting over the council vote tomorrow as he was... finding him first might be... ah, we could perhaps.." The half-elf starts connecting some of the dots of the day. "Ya follow me, let's not get even further split up - I went and paid my respect at one of the larger sacred groves earlier, so I know how to get there. We are going to find the attendant priest and work from there. For one thing, I trust my own who have sworn ourselves to the Culverwood. For another, a prayer of Sending is the fastest I can think of to contact Galen regardless where he is, and get a reply for setting up to meet right away, and I am not yet initiated to that circle myself, but my order's head priest in a town this size should be."

DM Kathy Monday April 11th, 2022 10:44:35 PM Panzer waits for the all-clear from Zazu. Zazu didn't post, but the door is not trapped, so we're going to move ahead. Panzer pushes open the door.
The room beyond is set up as kind of a mess hall, with long tables, benches, and a few chairs. The rogues hanging around in the room do not seem to be eating, though some appear to be playing some kind of card game. When the door opens, a human man in studded leather armor stands up. "Well, its about ti---" he begins, then belatedly realizes you are not who he expected.
The other spring to their feet, and everyone hastily begins drawing weapons. Aside from the human who spoke, you see several other humans with scimitars and daggers, a halfling (very similar to the halflings you fought before), and a dark elf with a short sword.
Lothlo fires a shot, but there are a lot of people in the way and he can barely see a target. His shot clatters harmlessly to the stone floor.
And the map. The red guy on the map is the human who spoke, who appears to be a leader of some kind. The green guy is the halfling. The purple guy is the dark elf. The other guys are all humans.
Reminder: you can move through allies' squares without impediment.
Up above, Beech says it's not a good idea to bring in other people at this point, and that you should find Galen. Nightingale agrees, and suggests trying Galen's home. Sahabiel also agrees, but suggests that the sacred grove might be a better option, especially since the priest there might be willing to cast a Message spell for you.

Panzer most certainly does NOT step through the door. Since he plans on using the door as a choke point vs alot of people, just like we found here he actually opens the door, gets a good look, then closes the door as the leader guy realizes that Silken lost and that we are loose in their base.
Panzer readies and action to slash the first person to reopen the door and stick his nose out of it. (Power Attack and Arcane strike active) Main hand Kukri Hits AC 13 for 12 damage " I saw a guy with a bow and what looked like a dark elf spellcaster. Lothlo can you prioritize them while I smash whoever steps up to the door? If anyone else has splash weapons like alchemist fire then throw it at whoever opens the door. I might catch a little splash damage but they will not be happy. Naithi be ready to swap with me if I get mauled so that Ash can wand me back up to full health."
OOC Kathy, could we get some squares outside the door to show us how wide the hallway is? I think way more of this fight is going to happen out in the hall rather than in the room.

Zazu and Boyo move to the center of the room, careful not to provoke AoOs. Zazu casts Silent Image to create the seeming of an obscuring mist, but onely 15 ft radius, because the wizard is not high enough level to cover a 20 ft radius with a silent image.
Anyone in the mist gets a Will save vs DC 17 to realize it is an illusion.
Boyo uses the full defense action to boost his AC.

Your DM also reminds you that they are between you and the exit. Trying to out-wait them is probably not the best strategy.
So, with Naithi's help, Panzer rushes in and upends one of the tables, creating some cover. Lothlo joins them.

The human leader steps over toward the wall. He watches you intently, but takes no other actions.
Two of the other humans move to where they have partial cover from the upturned table. Both fire shortbows at Zazu, but both miss. Two more move to the end of the table to target Panzer with their shortbows, but they also miss. The remaining two humans double-move to the end of the room.
The halfling and the dark elf seem to like your table idea, and upend their own. They crouch behind it and are no longer visible.
Up top, Beech and Nightingale agree with Sahabiel that the sacred grove is their best option. You make your way there. By day, you had seen several butterflies flitting around the sacred circle. By night, it is fireflies, their tiny glows flickering on and off around the stone circle. There are even more people here than when Sahabiel and Nightingale visited this afternoon.
Earlier, Sahabiel had not been able to find a priest or a caretaker. Now as you look around, you still don't see anyone who stands out.

Naithi begins casting a Summoning spell.
Zazu moves to a table he believes to be unoccupied. But that is the table that the halfling and the dark elf overturned last round! They're still back there!
Since the last battle, you healed everyone, roused Ena, thoroughly tied up Silken, interrogated Silken, checked for magic, and were very cautious coming down the hallway. I'm going to say 10 minutes.
The leader (red) continues to watch and do nothing.
The two thugs in the fake Obscuring Mist completely believe it. They begin blundering around, looking for a way out. One of them blunders straight through the mist and out the other side, where he finds he has no targets. He begins working his way around the "mist." The other blunders past the end of the table and into the clear. He is able to take a shot at Naithi, which misses.
The thug that Panzer attacked draws his scimitar and returns the favor. He misses, and takes a 5-foot step back. The other thug draws his scimitar and takes a 5-foot step forward, also attacking Panzer and also missing.
The two remaining thugs adjust their position slightly to avoid the "obscuring mist" and shoot at Lothlo. One hits, and Lothlo takes 2 damage.
The halfling and the dark elf move to surround Zazu, who gets an attack of opportunity on the halfling. Both attack. The dark elf hits for 17 damage
Up top, Nightingale begins singing and dancing, drawing some disapproving frowns from elves who came to commune peacefully with nature. Sahabiel begins asking around for a priest or druid. Beech pretends not to know either of them.
"She's probably in her cottage," one of the elves tells Sahabiel. "That way, through the trees. There's a path."

The path winds through some bushes and young trees, leading to a cottage. Well, a lean-to. The nature priest apparently takes her calling seriously. Her dwelling has only three walls, the fourth wall being open. A small, smokeless fire burns just inside. Belongings are arranged neatly inside the small space. An elf woman is sitting near the fire, using a pestle to grind something in a bowl. She looks up as you approach, but does not speak.

The priestess nods, frowning. "I can cast the spell," she says, "but as you probably know, people react better to a person they already know. An unknown voice suddenly speaking in your head is unnerving to say the least. I think I have a scroll around here somewhere. If I find it, will one of you be able to cast it?"

(ooc: Just to check if I am right to be so confident - the roll to not incur a mishap after failing to read a scroll properly is not a saving throw, but a regular ability check against DC 5. The crucial difference between a saving throw and an ability check being that as long as Sahabiel is not under attack or equivalently threatened, she can just do it formulaic and Take10 on the latter so she'd only really risk a scroll mishap if she was in combat, trying to read the scroll while falling, or something like that, right?)

Last round, Ash cast Cause Fear on one of the thugs. In a delayed reaction, he now freaks out and starts running away. He flees out the door and down the hallway where you entered.
This round, Panzer attacks the dark elf, hitting once.
Ash casts Cause Fear again, this time on the leader. He freaks out and begins to run toward the opposite door.
Lothlo fires two shots, but his intended target has fled, so your DM will apply the attacks to the dark elf.
Camalayas inflicted damage on the thug last round. This round, she pins the thug, and Naithi attempts a Coup de Grace. She succeeds, and the thug dies. [OOC: You don't have to roll to hit to inflict damage while grappling. If having Camalayas grapple is going to be a frequent combat tactic, you might want to review the grapple rules which are part of the combat maneuvers description.]
The blind thug flails around some more, but can't connect with a target. The remaining thug moves up to attack Panzer, but misses.
The halfling double moves again. The dark elf takes a 5-foot step so that Panzer is flanked. The dark elf's attack hits, and Panzer takes 9 damage.
At the cottage, Beech explains that he might be able to make the scroll work even if he technically doesn't have the magical ability. Nightingale asks about the spell. It is a sending spell.
Sahabiel explains that she has the magical ability, but perhaps not the strength.
[OOC: Sending is a 4th-level cleric spell, which means a cleric would need to be 7th level to cast it. A lower-level cleric would need to make a caster-level check (1d20+caster level) to activate the scroll. The DC is the required caster level +1, or 8 in this case. So you need to roll a d20, add your caster level, and get at least 8. You can use hero points if you have them. You might want to look over the "using hero points" section, as there are some tricks that aren't commonly used, but which might come in handy here.]
Sahabiel also explains that she cannot pay for the scroll. "It seems to be urgent," the priestess replies. "So I will not require payment from you. However, I would ask that sometime in the future, you extend a similar favor to someone in need."

Sahabiel was already more than willing to repay the favor in kind, so the promise is easily made. Of course, that means surviving the night, and she is quite aware they are likely about to poke a proverbial hornet's nest... so as a back-up plan she still writes that note that should she fall before having a chance to return the favor, the priestess can take Kohlrabi. Of course that is just an insurance policy.
"Now, let's see about the message to Galen.. how about something like; 'Galen - found where Ena held underground but scout team trapped, need alternate entrance into Den of Thieves NOW. Meet us at once, where are you?' " She pauses, and looking to her companions thinks out loud.. "I believe it would be good if we could propose a place to meet of our own, since if we leave that entirely to Galen, we will not get a chance to reply to his reply to let him know we can or can not get to his... would either you have any ideas for one?"
Ash casts another Cause Fear, this time on the halfling. He fails his save and flees, provoking an Attack of Opportunity from Panzer. Panzer, meanwhile, attacks the dark elf. He only hits once, but he does enough damage to put the rogue down.
Lothlo lines up his shot, only to have Panzer take his opponent down. He switches targets to the non-blinded thug, and hits twice.
Naithi attempts to grapple the non-blinded thug. First, she must succeed at a melee touch attack. A 23 is enough; however, Naithi does not have improved unarmed strike, so her attempt provokes an Attack of Opportunity from the thug. The attack misses. Next, Naithi must succeed at a Combat Maneuver check to grapple her opponent. You didn't roll one, but I'll use Camalayas's check, since that opponent is down. The grapple succeeds. [OOC: I strongly recommend that you review the rules for grappling if you're going to make this your go-to combat tactic. I had been assuming that Camalayas had some kind of special grappling ability, but she doesn't. So you both have to follow the standard grapple rules until you get more feats and/or abilities.] Meanwhile, the spider shoots a web at the fleeing leader. It hits, but the rogue nimbly dodges out of the web and is not entangled.
The grappled thug attempts to escape the grapple, but does not succeed. The blind thug continues to flail around, and actually manages to clip Ash for 7 damage.
The leader yanks open the door and disappears through it. From the room beyond, you hear people calling out in surprise.
In the grove, Nightingale believes she can cast the scroll. Beech does some math, then realizes that Nightingale and Sahabiel have a much better chance of activating the scroll than he does. He recommends composing the message beforehand. Sahabiel tries to compose a message, then realizes you need a place to meet. The closest landmark you know of is the Blue Shutters, and for obvious reasons, that may not be the best idea.
"Have him come here," the Priestess suggests. "Most local people know the Meadow Glade; I'm sure he could find it easily enough."

The halfling continues to flee, reaching the north door.
In the glade, Beech agrees that it would be a good meeting place. Sahabiel finishes composing the message. Nightingale prepares to cast the spell, but Sahabiel may have a better chance at it. All that remains is to decide who is casting and make the attempt.

We are not using this scroll to attempt to contact our friends who are in need of our aid, much as I too would wish to hear how they are faring. Naithi and Camalayas continue to grapple and tie up the rogue in front of them. In doing so, Naithi discoverers a way to tie up enemies now quickly in the future! (I just discovered that a grappled opponent doesn't need to be pinned before tying them up, but there is a -10 penalty. Might be worth usinga hero point at some point!)

Panzer moves to attack the thug that fled. You do have to double-move, passing by Ena lugging the bound Silken up the hallway.
Lothlo puts two arrows in the fleeing halfling, but it is not enough to stop him.
Naithi ties up the thug she and Camalayas captured.
The halfling continues to flee, heading through the door. A few seconds later, the door shuts behind him.
The thug who fled seems to recover his courage, and turns to face Panzer, but he has no more actions left this round.
And the map. I put Panzer and "his" thug off the map to the south; they're back in the room where you found Ena. I don't think I need to map that unless the rest of the party gets involved.
In the glade, Sahabiel reminds Nightingale that you are trying to reach Galen, not the rest of the party directly. But since your ultimate goal is to get help to your friends, Nightingale's point still stands. At any rate, Sahabiel successfully casts the scroll and delivers the message to Galen. A moment later, you "hear" his voice in your head. Understood. Stay where you are. We're on our way. He does not, alas, say who "we" are.
Beech does some mental inventory, and realizes that this one spell he's been working on is a lot closer than he'd thought. With a few minutes' concentration, he might just master it. [OOC: We'll say that Beech has time to figure out the last bits of the new spell while waiting for Galen and whoever he's bringing.]

Either way he wanted to know what his chances of out fighting the group was or he wanted to talk. " WEB THE DOOR SHUT, BUY US A FEW MOMENTS! I am not leaving a foe behind me." 2 healing makes Zazu conscious and at 10 hp with 10 non lethal, essentially at zero, from what I am reading. 10 more healing after that puts him at 20 with no nonlethal and 5 more makes him full. With what you rolled he should be at 24 hp. Please keep track of how many charges you use so I can mark them off. The wand was full when it started out. I have lost track of it because I have to keep committing math to figure out my to hits 8).

"Well, the Illusions were both scroll provided, and my mage armor earlier is all I've cast so far to day out of my own reserves, of course I'll be needing to refresh it before we head in.... I don't have any serious damaging spells, I create rolling balls of fire and can fan flames up close, but that's about it. I also prefer to attack from range, with arrows, eventually, I hope to be able to deliver spells that way... And the reason I didn't go with them, besides making sure there was someone keeping watch, but I'm not so comfortable in small places." As he looks at his big backside... "Oh, and yeah, I'm fine... I had a spell come into focus in my mind, it just wasn't the spell I had been planning on is all. Not that it's not useful, in some cases super useful, I just thought something to assist offensively was in order and I got defensive... Maybe my Mother played with the magical threads and made sure I was protected. I wouldn't put it past her."

This seems to be something of a final straw for Ena. She leaves Silken tied up in the corridor, and moves to sit at one of the mess hall tables. "I'm done," she announces. "You want her in here, you go and drag her."
Zazu inventories what spells he has left.
Lothlo isn't sure about the idea of a barricade; he'd rather have a clear shot at people coming through the door. Which rather assumes that people are going to be coming through the door.
Meaning your DM has done a woefully bad job of explaining the situation. You are trapped here. The way out is ahead of you. Ena needs to be at that meeting in the morning, or the Thieves' Guild will score yet another victory. The Thieves' Guild is aware of all of this. They have no reason to try to come in here; as long as you sit in here, they win.
In the glade, Nightingale works on sobering up, while Sahabiel and Beech discuss strategies and resources.
About 15 minutes after you sent the message, you see Galen approaching you, accompanied by an elf man and an elf woman. "We're here," he announces, perhaps unnecessarily. "I believe some of you met Lamruil," he continues. Indeed, you may remember the elf wizard who you met briefly at Galen's. "And this is Naralyn Aerona," he says. Looking relived, he adds, "Naralyn is a former member of the Thieves' Guild."
"And I know how to find the Den of Thieves," she says. "So if we're ready, I think it's time for a rescue operation."

Ash is careful not to say any names in front of Silken "... asked us to investigate your disappearance. We located you here - in a basement area of the Blue Shutters tavern. Our party is currently divided so we are doing our best to get you out of here safely. What that means is that we all need to work together."
She places a hand on Ena's shoulder.
"So, you have a choice. You either help us by dragging Silken or you help fight. I don't know how skilled you are in combat, but if you think you'd be better suited up front then I can manage Silken. We're all in this together now and need to work as a team to get out of here"
Ash uses the cure wand on Panzer and herself.
"Let's gather what gear we can from the fallen. We might still need it for what lies ahead". She'll pat down any nearby bodies for anything useful and stow any valuables.

Panzer looks at the barricade, thanks Ash for the healing and then heads back and drags Silken to the door. He then questions Naithi's prisoner. " How big is the room beyond that door? How far to the exit from the Den of Thieves?" Once he has the answers to these questions he decides to try and come up with a plan. They could keep opening the door and taking shots at the guild until the rogues get tired of it. They might be able to replace the door with Zazu's silent image and shoot 'through the door'. They might be able to replace the door with the silent image and gauge the distance to the exit and then use the obscuring mist to make a break for it. He mentions these ideas to the others and waits to see what they think.

"Seems to me," Zazu whispers, "that if the door swings in, I could make an illusion of the door just a fraction of an inch beyond it. Then when we quietly pull the door open, the illusion will make it seem like the door is closed when it isn't. That could give us an edge."
Zazu looks closely at the door, checking for traps, looking for a keyhole, trying to stealthily figure out if the door is locked. (Perception 25) Putting an ear to the door, the keen-eared elf tries to hear anything beyond. (Perception 14 oh well).

The man snorts. "Farther than you'll get. Three more rooms, all full of thieves. And that's just to get to the stairs."
Zazu examines the door. It does open toward you, with the hinges on this side. Zazu suggests creating an illusion of the door, so the thieves might not notice when it is opened.
Lothlo looks around. Although the walls, floor, and ceiling are stone, you're pretty sure you're still underground. You came into the basement of the tavern to find the secret door, and you don't think you've gained any elevation since then. You'll need to go up--either stairs or a ramp--before you can get out.
In the glade, Beech is ready to go, so you depart, heading toward the nondescript group of houses where you think the tunnel was heading. As you travel, Nightingale fills the others in on what has happened.
This time, when you get to the houses, Naralyn knows exactly which one you need, and leads the way to it. A few lights are on inside, though by now it must be after midnight. "This is the one," she whispers, crouching to hide in the shadows. "The only way in is the front door. There's probably a password, but we don't have it. We should expect trouble right away. Are we ready?"

Naithi pounders the situation. I think as long as they are trying to delay us the battles will be more likely to go in our favor, but we should be prepared to use a spell to get Ena out of here if we get overwhelmed.
As for combat, Camalayas and I are in transition at the moment. I'm a druid, but fate has led us to become more combat oriented.
(We took the Lost Child path are more grapplers at the moment. I'll be taking 5 levels is morphling in the future. Picture a fairy in mounted combat riding a di dire rabbit and using fey tricks. Not many spells left. It looks like my summoning spells are worthless in Cindy's unless we are using a special ability they have. Also Camalayas and Naithi share a hit point pool.)

She then turns back to the current situation. "I'm guessing by now the others are working to get us out. If there's another way out of here - and it sounds like there is - then they'll probably find it and work to reach us. Let's push on and hopefully meet them in the middle". Ash would really like another Locate Creature spell right now to work out where the others are, but she's out of witch spells for the day.
She's happy to go with Zazu's plan of an illusion before opening the door. She'll stay in the back with Ena and help drag Silken along.

Zazu casts Mage Armor from two scrolls on Boyo and Ena. "This will last a few hours and may help save your life."
When the party is ready, Zazu ponders the plan. Twiring a strand of hair around a finger, deep in thought, the rogue thinks about those hinges. Will they squeak? Will they stick? Zazu will first use the Disable Device skill ... in reverse, if that's possible. Maybe it might be possible to Enable Device, so that the hinges will be more smooth and less squeaky? Using masterwork picks to flick away bits of rust, say?

Then it is time to cast the Silent Image. Zazu assumes the other side of the door will look much like this side. But the jig will be up, for example, if the other side is painted red, say, or has a sign on it reading "Torture Chamber."
Therefore, Zazu will listen intently, pick a time when there is a burst of talking or noise from the other side, then cast the spell and open the door. As the door opens, the wizard looks at the door and immediately makes the illusion into a better match for it.
The rules say, "A failed saving throw indicates that a character fails to notice something is amiss. A character faced with proof that an illusion isn't real needs no saving throw. If any viewer successfully disbelieves an illusion and communicates this fact to others, each such viewer gains a saving throw with a +4 bonus."
I'm hoping that seeing the real door open, and knowing the plan, the party will not need to make saves to see through the illusion.

She expects they will need to take care of those before descending into the underground section.

Ash has other ideas, however, and thinks a prisoner might be useful. You can't see Silken's reaction from here, because Ena still hasn't brought her. She is heading back to get her, however.
Panzer has an idea for creating a turtle and moving through the next room, though it will be heavy and difficult. Lothlo likes the idea, but isn't sure you have time.
Zazu casts Mage Armor on Ena and Boyo. Ena thanks him. You listen at the door, wanting to time your ruse for a burst of noise from the other side. You do not hear one. Minutes tick by. How long are you prepared to wait?
Beech and Sahabiel indicate that they are ready. Moving quickly and quietly, Naralyn takes out lock picks and begins working on the door. She nods to indicate it is unlocked, then steps back to allow Galen to open the door.
Beyond the door, you see a good-sized room, devoid of furniture. Five rogues stand there. They were ready for trouble, but not quite this soon--and not from this direction. They whirl to face the door, drawing weapons as they do.
[I ran out of time to do a map. I'm really sorry. I'll try to get one up tomorrow; in the meantime, just do your best to describe what your character does. Remember that the door is kind of a bottleneck.]

Panzer now has something to do. He uses the upended tables and whacks away at their legs with his adamantine kukri. The leg probably aren't tough enough to have a hardness the Kukri can't beat so all damage should go to the leg. His minimum damage is 12 on his main hand. Within a minute (hopefully) he will have them dragged up to the door minus the legs. He whispers to Niathi. "It will fall to you and I to carry this, I think the others are too weak. Keep the tables to a point in front of you and I will keep them open at the back so there is room to fit us all inside. Some arrows might get in the back but my armor should stop some of them. we head to the door and try to just get through it and move on. Lothlo, try to kill them before they make me look more like a porcupine than a badger."

When Naralyn proves able to pick the lock on the door, Sahabiel takes a small piece of parchment from her pouch. On this, during one of her morning prayers the week before, she had prepared a copy of the prayer or praise to the resilience of the Culverwood. As she speaks a few words of power in Sylvan now while holding it, the parchment and its text break apart into faint motes of light that form a shimmering screen around the green half-elf.
Shield of Faith: +2 Deflection bonus. Rounds remaining: 50
"A choke point is only a choke point while it is in front of ya.", she sums up her thoughts to Beech. Feeling that her place is to make and hold a front line while the liontaur causes havoc from range and Nightingale does her own thing, the armored warrior-priestess follows into the room in Galen's wake, shield held in front of her to hopefully provide some small amount of cover for her allies to come through the door behind her and Galen.
Sahabiel's move is not enough to reach any enemies, so she just focuses on defending against any attacks thrown her way - using Total Defense, +4 dodge bonus to AC until next round. Shield of Faith: +2 Deflection bonus. Rounds remaining: 49

Perception check = 32 ooc: Naithi can hear if a bow of being drawn 20 feet away through a closed door or 70ft away without a door. Hopefully her hearing is able to detect something in the other room.... Not sure if that is where the others are or not.

Ash scans the room with a quick Detect Magic. The thugs didn't have anything magical on them; the dark elf had a magic short sword and a potion.
Ena finishes dragging Silken into the room. The rogue is struggling, making the task more difficult. The dragging has also opened some scrapes on the prisoner, some of which are bleeding slightly.
Naithi listens. You hear some very small scuffling noises from the other side of the door, as if the people there are getting a little impatient and shifting around.
When everyone is ready, Zazu casts his illusion and you open the door.
Beyond the door is a training room. As your prisoner had reported, it is long and thin. A couple of archery targets are visible on the far wall. There are weapon racks on the left wall, and three training dummies toward the center of the room. There is a pile of training mats in one corner.
Arrayed in the room are four more thugs, two archers, and a gnome who looks like some kind of caster. There is no sign of the leader or the halfling who fled in here earlier. For now, they do not seem to notice that the door opened.
Here is the training room map. I've kind of scattered everybody near the door; feel free to re-position yourself and then take your action. The tables are both heavy and awkward, so those carrying them move at half speed.
In the Den of Thieves, Beech places a Flaming Sphere next to one of the rogues. Sahabiel casts Shield of Faith and steps up to be part of the front line. The other two elves rush in as well.
The elf woman Beech targeted with the Flaming Sphere makes her save. She steps back and casts a spell. DC 18 Spellcraft check Highlight to display spoiler: {Displacement}. Once her spell is cast, it becomes very difficult to tell where she is actually standing.
A human rogue steps forward and drinks a potion. He embiggens.
Another human woman steps forward and drinks a potion. Its effect is not immediately obvious.
The remaining rogues move forward in tandem. One attacks Sahabiel and hits for 2 damage. The other attacks Lamruil, and hits.
"Take care," Lamruil calls, staggering a bit. "His blades are poisoned."

Before going through the door into the training room Panzer pummels Silken into submission. He then casts Shield on himself, raising his ac by 4.(Spell failure OK) With a nod to Niathi he moves the tables 15 feet into the room. This should split the thugs and screen the door kinda well from the gnome and archers. Where he stops he draws 1 kukri and waits. If this goes the way he thinks it will, the thugs will come around the table to assault them and Lothlo will get primo shots at them, Zazu too if he can shoot and maintain the illusion. AoO hits Ac 21 for 14 damage

Before stepping through the door, Panzer pummels Silken into submission and casts Shield. He moves through the door and draws a kukri.
Once through the door, you see what became of the leader and the halfling who had fled from the earlier fight. They are to your left, pressed against the wall so you could not see them from the doorway. Luckily, though, Zazu's illusion kept them from reacting in time to surprise you.
Lothlo fires two shots at one of the thugs, hitting both times. Ash follows up with a ray at the same target.
Zazu maintains the illusion and pulls out a scroll.
The thug Lothlo fired at fires back, but misses. Another thug moves up to him--having to double move to do so, so he gets no attack.
Another thug moves up to the table and pulls it down, so it is lying flat on the ground. The last thug moves up to Panzer and gets a kukri in the shoulder for his trouble. He strikes back, but misses.
The halfling moves up to flank Lothlo with the thug, and attacks with a short sword. He scores a critical hit for 22 damage.
The leader from the previous fight once again takes no action.
The archers fire. It's difficult to say who they were aiming at, but they didn't hit anybody.
The gnome casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 17 Highlight to display spoiler: {Mirror Image}. Where there was one gnome, suddenly there are five, shifting about.
In the Den of Thieves, Nightingale attacks with a flurry of blows, hitting once and doing damage.
Beech rolls his sphere into the female rogue's square, but she easily dodges the damage. His follow-up shot misses.
Sahabiel strikes one of the rogues with her morningstar. He seems unfazed by the damage.
Galen steps up next to Sahabiel and attacks the same target. He seems to have found a vital area; his attack does a lot of damage.
Lamruil steps back--placing him also next to Sahabiel, and casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 21 Highlight to display spoiler: {Chain Lightning}. Lightning crackles through the small room, hitting each of the enemy rogues. Of course, there are drawbacks to using reflex attacks on a roomful of rogues. Only the enlarged rogue and the caster take any damage at all.
Naralyn steps up next to Nightingale to attack the enlarged rogue. She attacks twice with the rapier, hitting once.
The poison rogue and the female rogue move up to catch Galen in a flank. He is struck once, for a lot of damage, but manages to parry the second blow that would have hit him.
The other rogue on the left side steps up and attacks Lamruil, hitting once for a small amount of damage.
The enlarged rogue strikes twice at Naralyn and once at Nightingale. He hits Naralyn once, missing Nightingale altogether.
The caster sends Magic Missiles flying at Galen, who takes more damage.
And the Den of Thieves map. It's pretty obvious that the enlarged rogue is the most badly hurt of the group.

These rogues are very skilled, Sahabiel has to acknowledge. Much as though she might wish they were not so. (I am taking the +bonus numbers on the enemy attack roll as a rough indicator of how competent their attacks are executed)

Sahabiel is not sure what magic it is that Lamruil unleashes, but the sheer effect of it tells her enough to know that it is far beyond the limits of what she could channel herself. She wonders if herself, Beech and Midnight together could have stood equal against Lamruil if he has such power at his disposal.. and yet these allies were still apprehensive about taking on the thieves' guild? Not a good sign about what they may find themselves up against in here... she senses that they may be rather small fish in present company, but it matters not - even small fish had a part to play.

Panzer attacks the thug flanking Lothlo. He hits with both kukri and teeth. You take a moment to watch the leader from the other room. He is human, not elf. And you notice that, just as you are studying him, he is studying you. Very intently. It creeps you out a little.
Zazu targets one of the thugs with a Scorching Ray, finishing him off.
Lothlo fires twice, hitting once, further damaging the thug flanking him.
Naithi and Camalayas each grapple an opponent. Each attempt provokes an attack of opportunity. Naithi is hit for 3 damage.
The grappled thug stabs at Camalayas with his dagger. He hits for 5 damage.
The remaining two thugs approach Panzer. One pushes over the remaining table and double-moves in a wide arc, avoiding any attack of opportunity. The other thug attacks, hitting Panzer for 11 damage.
The grappled halfling pulls a potion out of his belt pouch, then tries to escape the grapple. He does not succeed.
The archers fire at Naithi, but misss badly.
The cluster of gnomes moves forward slightly and casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {Phantasmal Killer}. Ash suddenly sees the most fearsome creature she can possibly imagine. If she succeeds at a DC 21 Will save, she is able to disbelieve. Otherwise, she must make a DC 21 Fortitude save or die from fear. If the Fortitude save is successful, she instead takes 11 damage.
Meanwhile, Beech fires two shots but does not hit.
Nightingale turns her fists to wood and continues flurrying, hitting once.
Sahabiel unleashes a powerful swing, which doesn't quite connect. She realizes that these foes are quite skilled.
Galen attacks his foe twice and hits twice, both critically. The man drops. "One down!" he calls exuberantly. He shifts over to support Nightingale and Naralyn.
Naralyn also shifts, perhaps trying to get in a position to flank. She attacks twice and hits twice, once critically. The enlarged rogue is now badly wounded.
Seeing this, Lamruil casts defensively to give him a full spread of Magic Missiles. The large man goes down with a thud. "Killjoy!" Naralyn calls. "You're welcome," Lamruil replies.
One of the remaining rogues shifts to attack Sahabiel. He attacks twice, hitting once for 1 damage.
The female rogue attacks Galen, hitting twice.
The caster shifts position and casts a spell. DC 20 Spellcraft Highlight to display spoiler: {Waves of Fatigue}. Nightingale, Sahabiel, Galen, and Naralyn are now fatigued.

Zazu and Boyo move up to the door, flanking Ash. If Ash takes damage, Zazu administers a potion of curing for 13 hp curing.
If Ash does not need curing, then Zazu casts Ray of Frost at whatever enemy is in sight, missing with a nat 1.

Panzer takes the hit and realizes that the thugs can sneak attack too. None had as of yet but probably none had been able to flank him thus far. This is...bad. He counts on Camalayas to finish the downed thug, unless the jolt from Ash already did. He moves through Naithi and Camalayas( provoking an AoO from the top thug) and draws his second Kukri. Stopping near the halfling he attempts to finish the halfling before it can drink the potion or escape from the grapple. (Power Attack and Arcane Strike active) Main hand kukri hits AC 18 ( not counting grappled condition) for 13 damage

Sahabiel feels something weakening come over her, but she still has her experience with the giant scorpion fresh in mind and this is not actually quite as bad as that was. She sees an opening to reposition herself favorably, and takes a 5' step before her attack so that she and Lamruil(?) now have one rogue flanked between them.

Naithi and Camalayas mewl with pain and frustration as they tighten their grips on their prey and pin them down.
Ash shrugs off the hostile spell, and calls on her companions to attack the gnome (who is female, but maybe it's hard to tell from here). This time, Ash does not miss with her touch attack, and jolts the grappled thug.
Panzer realizing the group may be in a bit of trouble, re-positions, provoking from one of the thugs, who misses his attack. He attacks the halfling, finishing him off.
Lothlo fires two arrows, finishing off the grappled thug.
Naithi and Camalayas find that the foes they were grappling are dead now.
The two remaining thugs step up to flank Naithi, so they probably have grapples in their future. Both miss their attacks.
The leader from the other room pulls out a potion, drinks it, and disappears.
The two archers target Panzer, and both hit. Panzer takes 5 and 2 damage.
The gnome casts a spell. You can roll Spellcraft if you like, but the Magic Missiles that slam into Panzer make it kind of obvious. Panzer takes another 12 damage.
Beech rolls the Flaming Sphere into the caster's square. He follows up with Magic Missiles at the same target, who is the only remaining foe with any damage at all.
Nightingale casts Hold Person on the caster.
Sahabiel moves to try to flank her opponent with Lamruil. She doesn't quite get into a flanking position, but nonetheless, Sahabiel scores a solid hit.
Galen and Naralyn move to flank the female rogue. Galen attacks twice, hitting once for a small amount of damage. Naralyn only attacks once, but her strike hits and does a lot of damage.
Lamruil steps back and casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Baleful Polymorph}. Nothing obvious happens. (The target made their save.)
The caster dodges the Flaming Sphere and resists the Hold Person. She shifts away from the sphere and targets Naralyn with a Scorching Ray. Well, two scorching rays, but only one of them hits.
The woman (who I've just realized is a fighter, not a rogue; sorry about that) and the remaining rogue move to flank Lamruil. The rogue attacks twice, hitting once. The fighter attacks three times, hitting all three times. Lamruil is now bleeding from several wounds. "Galen!" he calls.

Panzer saw the look on Ash's face when she saved against the spell from the gnome. She was terrified and clearly put her all into saving from that spell. Then she pointed out the threat. Panzer nearly soiled himself when he saw that swarm of Magic Missiles coming at him, then he remembered he had cast shield and relaxed as they pattered harmlessly against it like rain. That gnome had to go. The grapple twins seemed to have things here under control and Panzer could handle a little damage if the thugs managed to hit, so he ran through Lothlo and provoked them both to attack him, setting them up for Niathi and Camalayas to grapple. As he moved past the archer he said " I need as many of those gnomes to disappear as possible , can you help me out?" He keeps running and tries to put one of the training dummies to work as cover from the gnome and the archers.

Ash sees Panzer run by, off to make the gnome sad. She pulls out the healing wand and steps next to Lothlo, tapping him and healing him for 4 damage ( bringing him to 25 hp, you need to take that crit from the halfling a few rounds ago bud. Keep the hp accurate so you get heals when you are hurt.)

Sahabiel circles around to get back behind the rogue (on the map, SW and then SE rather than S S, to avoid provoking AoO), because she does not like how Lamruil is getting boxed in. Now, taking repeated swings at her opponent might not be the most creative, but if it connected is was fairly effective -- and as long as she kept herself at least potentially dangerous, her target might have to focus on her instead of on her ally that had been taking far too many strikes to her liking already...

Lothlo thanks Ash for the healing and looks around the room for signs of the vanished leader, paying extra attention to the back door to see if he is sneaking away.

If the grapples have made it safe to move, Lothlo gets line of sight on the gnome and send an arrow towards them. Otherwise he will send a pair of arrows flying towards the thug that isn't grappled

One of them manages to hit him for 6 damage. Panzer takes up a position partially covered by a training dummy.
Ash heals Lothlo.
Zazu misses with a Ray of Frost.
Naithi and Camalayas attempt to grapple the thugs, provoking from each of them. The thugs miss. Camalayas grapples her target, but Naithi misses hers. Lothlo, however, comes to the rescue and finishes off the thug.
The archers reposition to get a better angle on Panzer. They fire, but miss.
The gnome casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 17 Highlight to display spoiler: {Hypnotic Pattern}. A 10-foot radius burst of pretty colored lights appears near the door (the lavender circle on the map). Those closest to the center are affected first, so Boyo and Lothlo need to make DC 19 Will saves or be fascinated by the pretty, pretty lights.
Nightingale attempts a Stunning Fist, but isn't able to land it.
Beech repositions the sphere and fires more Magic Missiles. [OOC: you've placed the sphere near the fighter, not the caster. Was that deliberate?]
Sahabiel moves to the other side of the rogue and attacks, but misses.
Galen steps up to give Sahabiel some help. He hits with his rapier, and must have found a vital spot, because he does a lot of damage.
Naralyn has a flank with Nightingale, and she takes full advantage, attacking twice. Only her second strike hits, but it does a lot of damage.
Lamruil steps out of melee and casts a spell. DC 17 Spellcraft Highlight to display spoiler: {Hideous Laughter}. Nothing visible happens as a result.
The fighter fails her save and takes damage from the Flaming Sphere. She shifts to attack Nightingale. Three times, her rapier flashes, but only one connects. Nightingale takes 13 damage.
The rogue attacks Sahabiel, but misses.
The caster repositions and casts a spell. A Lightning Bolt sizzles toward Galen, but he makes his save. And, apparently, has Evasion.
