Mortimer shakes his hand, dismissing the spell he had cast. The flesh returns to his hand, but it seems the magic has left a slight stain upon his fingers. They appear slighter darker in tone. He hopes it wears off.
He's happy the two water gremlins have been dispatched. He sarcastically wishes they are enjoying the other side. Noting the variety of gremlins they have encountered, he tries to recall if any of them look like the first gremlin they killed. The one that almost killed him!
Mortimer starts to rummage through the pile of corpses, that were the food of these last two. He's trying to discern if there are any remains of the gremlin that look like the ones who could appear like human children; the ones from Agartha's lynching. If not, there are at least two more gremlin out there.

DM Steve -- I'll try to be less impulsive, but... Saturday April 30th, 2022 11:03:54 AM Drack retrieves the darts and swims up after Torryn. He’s a bit grumpy about a couple of points on coordinating their attacks, and being in wet leather. Torrynashkabbeth decides to leave the darts, and swims up easier than she expected. Once she’s out of the water she dries herself and later Drack with magic. She has a sense of accomplishment. Manolo checks for an ambush while cheering the successful skirmish. Ash helps Torryn and Drack out of the pool. Mole admits this is the first time he’s summoned water elementals. Mortimer dismisses the spell he had prepared, and starts investigating to make sure all the gremlins they have seen are accounted for. Loryn is quiet again.
Torryn is able to get herself and Drack passably dry with her spell – no damage is done, but they are still a little damp. Manolo finds no sign of other gremlins waiting, and Mortimer finds the creatures they killed when they were here last, but no others among the corpses. In particular, there are no bodies of creatures that could have passed as children unless magic were involved. There is the gnome-sized, clawed beast that probably killed Ballo; five thin and tiny ones of the sort that set the deadfall for the group; one of the tiny dog-like ones that escaped through the crevices in the large room. Now they have two tiny lobster-dogs in the water as well. The small creature that was with the dog-like ones left no body when it detonated. Although the group may not have killed every gremlin that lived here, there is no sign that any that may have fled have come back. As the search ranges to the rest of the cave it becomes pretty clear that the fungus growing on the bedding would not be obvious had the bedding continued to be used.
The darts, when someone checks, are not magic.

Still, whilst she was proud of what she'd achieved, Drack's words resonated. They were words that she'd heard many times before. Stop and think before you act! Mole agrees with Loryn. Mortimer gives his assessment of the gremlins, and proves that his cast-iron stomach has mastered death, or at least become inured to its grotesqueries. Loryn skips back to Minerva’s, content with the outcome of the fight.
The party makes its way back to town without further drama, at least until arriving back at Minerva’s. There in the common room is Phaedra (captain of the Windgard) and a human woman that the locals in the party recognize as Edwina Pippin, the mayor. The mayor is sitting with Minerva at a table, holding her hands and somehow both smiling and crying. Phaedra stands behind them awkwardly, shifting from foot to foot. There is a parchment scroll on the table, with a broken seal, along with a moderately full belt pouch.
Minerva seems at a loss, looking back and forth from the parchment to the mayor. When she sees you come in, she gathers herself and proclaims, ”I suppose I have much to think on tomorrow, but for now, our heroes return and need their replenishment and rest.” With that, she rises, and comes over to see what the party requires, calling for her helper to assist.

So she continued to busy herself, invoking minor Fey magic magic (Mage Hand and Mending) to expedite the clear up. She trusted the others to explain correctly. "Welcome to Minerva's Professor Crumblecore. A pleasure to have a member of the Sage's Guild here with us in Windhorne."
Loryn smiles and looks at Ash as he provides a short summary of the recent events and chuckles. That was certainly the short version.
Loryn waves his hands dismissively at the mention of the ring, "No, no. The ring was not the cause, twas the gremlins. We encountered evidence all over about them. But we firmly believe that we have seen the last of any mischief from that particular direction."
Loryn was still concerned about the man who seemed very intent on burning Agatha at the stake and his unknown associates that were lurking in the woods that night. That was something he would not be forgetting soon if ever until that mystery was solved.
His mind snaps back to the present,
"Adding to the tales, well hard to say without knowing what you heard , but there was a pair of ogres that came into town not too long ago as well. We were thinking they were part of the gremlins mischief at the time. 1 is still, I think, within the cells of the keep. He told a tale of a young human girl, who gave he and his ogre friend several casks of ale in return to come and storm the party that was going on. We know it could have been no human girl from Windhorne, or anywhere else for that matter, and so we fell into thinking a shapechanger or gremlin under a guising spell."
he glances about at his friends, "I think that covers it, right?"

'A gnome of no great importance,' Mortimer holds back a laugh and takes a long sip from his pint. He sits back and lets the others engage the stranger. He's never trusted these blatherskiting toffs and their secret societies. He's after the ring, plain and simple. He called out Loryn by name ... how did he know he had the ring? He knows more than what he's letting on.
(Sense Motive: 1)
However, Mortimer can't get a proper read on the stranger. Either he's got magic blinding his senses or he's had too much to drink. So he'll have to rely on his previously established prejudices.
(Backstory: Mortimer knows nothing about his family history, but much of his mistrust was bred into him by his bloodline. Most of his family history has been lost to time. There may be a written records still in existence, in some ancient tome or scroll. However such knowledge of the Margrave family and their descendants are locked in the libraries of loremasters or tucked away in hidden places. Mortimer simply has no idea that his once great and infamous family were hunted down and slaughtered by people like this.)

DM BatMark -- Yes, offer me the ring, small one... Monday May 9th, 2022 8:45:24 PM Drack watches and holds his tongue, lest he disrupt the proceedings in a way incompatible with Domi’s will. Torrynashkabbeth busiedf herself with cleaning (magically!) and trusted some of the others to carry on the discussion. Manolo asks what ring the fellow is looking for and what makes it dangerous. Ash follows Torryn’s lead and watches her magic. He describes some of the quest against the gremlins. Mole continues to observe the situation. Mortimer is suspicious, but unsure, of the stranger. Loryn welcomes the Professor, and describes in more detail some of the threats to the hamlet. He asks how the Professor knew of him.
The Professor amiably if succinctly answers your questions. ”Well, I wasn’t looking for Master Glitterfall here originally, but various rumors came to my ears and so I came to investigate. A ring found, mysterious fires, fey all around–I thought perhaps there was a curse at work, perhaps connected to this ring. It is a trope in all those plays for a reason, after all! So you did find a ring then? Would you like me to examine it, in order to make sure that it is not one of the sources of mischief here? Such lore can be dangerous when the fey are involved, after all. Do you wish you had never seen the thing? Or ask why it came to you? Or why you were chosen? Such questions can be answered. If it is a menace, I am authorized by the Guild to offer you a fair price for it, that the dangerous lore be removed for safekeeping, unused. Knowledge is generally to be shared, but even that principle has some limits–some things are not meant for mortal folk. The decision lies with you, but I will help you with this burden, if you allow it.”

Most likely she'd got entirely the wrong end of the stick. It wouldn't be the first time that had happened. Her intuition seemed largely limited to musical interpretation.

"Well we were gifted the ring, it was not a found by us and i have been able to deduce that is can summon a small elemental of fire and we were able to determine that there is a necromantic tint on the ring. Haven't gone much further than that."
Glancing over at Drack, "Inclined to agree."
Then over to Ash and he pauses a moment, "A good point as well," Looking back, "this is odd and my question is what rumors? It has been less than a week since we came into possession of the ring and only a couple of days from the elemental summoning."
"I have no qualms with you looking at the ring. After all you are a member of the Sages Guild and several of us are with The Woldian League of Adventurers and there should be cooperation between us I think."
Loryn produces the ring and places it on the table, "But I think we should hear more detail on what brought you here."
Loryn thought the man was making far more of the thing than need be, phrases like Chosen, mortal folk and burden seemed a bit over dramatic to the sensible gnome.

That was definitely a spell he was casting. Yes, she was pretty sure of that, but what it was, she not a clue. Loryn offers no objections to the casting of a spell, it was a prudent measure. He certainly would before picking up an unknown magic item. The gnome recognizes the spell and when completed he asks with a raised eyebrow, "So were you able to detect a curse upon the ring?"
"I should tell you that I have worn it of course, and as stated earlier, activated the summoning aspect. But do tell, what do think?" Loryn asks pleasantly. By nature, Loryn trusted the noble races. Loryn perceptively asks whether the Professor detected any curses on the ring.
The Professor continues to concentrate for a few more moments, then nods to Loryn. ”Yes, quite right, Master Glitterfall, the ring is indeed cursed. A whiff of enchantment and necromancy, I think. Fortunately, these sorts of gremlin curses–I suspect jinkins, by the way–they do not tend to transfer from the item to the bearer. Rather, they make the item malfunction in potentially dangerous ways. I did not detect any curse on you or your companions, so that is something to be thankful for. Such curses are not easily reversed. So let me make you an offer on behalf of the Guild. She immediately covered her mouth with her hand, but the smile never left her eyes. What the mage said made sense: the item was cursed. She would have given it to him for safe keeping and been grateful enough of that. Being given money for it and so much seemed preposterous. Perhaps the others wanted the money. Torryn had no great use for it. It had been hard enough persuading her parents to accept the coins she provided. There was no possibility that they'd accept more. Torryn composed herself as best she could.

Drack was already in, as was Ash and Torry and he knew Mortimer would certainly be for selling the ring for such an amount and so was Loryn himself.
Oh why couldn't the offer had been some trivial amount so he could turn it down and keep the ring.

He chooses to table the discussion for a later time. For now he wants to be shown the shinnies.
A different question creeps in past the cheap women ... "Umm, minus the pesky curse, do you know what this type of ring is called?"
DM BatMark -- Done! Thursday May 12th, 2022 10:24:37 PM Drack looks forward to some gear upgrades. Torrynashkabbeth manages to compose herself, and thinks about who to donate the windfall to. Mortimer has various fantasies about what the gold might bring, and asks what the ring is called. Loryn accepts the offer with some reluctance.
The Professor opines that the ring is a ring of elemental summoning, just a fey-cursed one. He is not aware of any similar recent gremlin infestations in the area, although of course over history, there have been such. He reaches into a small haversack and draws out a bag that hits the table with a satisfying clink. Upon examination, you find that it has the promised amount of gold.
With that, he rises, thanks you for the stories and trust, and wishes you well in your next, better-equipped quest. ”Well, I must be back to the business that originally drew me to the nearby region. Loryn will also head to the Catacombs. Torry was correct, of course, magic was quite expensive, but he could think of several potions that could come in handy or that might be very prudent to get his hands on. being a hero was dangerous business, else everyone would do it. A friend of the family once told him 'Being an adventurer or hero, or relic hunter is great and has a wonderful retirement plan. Trick is to live long enough.'
And so Loryn was off to buy a healing potion or 2

Seeing no response from the sage he decides to return back and just eats a little meals and goes to sleep again.

Perhaps a healing potion was a good idea. Torryn decided not to make any firm decisions until she got to the catacombs and saw what was available and at what price. Those prices though, would likely be horrific!
Mortimer Margrave (Stephen F.): ac:13/13/10. hp:21/21. Monday May 16th, 2022 8:33:54 PM
Mortimer continues to wait patiently at the Catacombs. While there is time, he does peruse the Catacombs inventory catalog. His eyes bug out at the prices. He can't imagine ever being able to afford such things.
DM BatMark -- Playing for Keeps Monday May 16th, 2022 8:48:34 PM Drack heads to the Catacombs. Torrynashkabbeth goes window shopping in the Catacombs. Manolo eats a bit and naps. Ash also heads to the Catacombs. Mole heads to the Catacombs too. Mortimer gets lost in the Catacombs for a bit. Loryn shops for some potions and such.
Mole shows back up with a nifty looking haversack, while Drack has something sloshing in his pouch. As the party wanders back into the boarding house in the afternoon, a young lad with a determined look enters as well. A little out of breath, he says, ”Captain Phaedra requests you heroes attend a meeting with her at the Keep. At your earliest convenience, she said.” With a clumsy bow, he rushes back out the door.

The 'window shopping' turned into a little bit more than that. It was partly the design and partly her desire to be useful that propelled Torryn to again act impulsively. This impulse purchase was of a necklace. It was very pretty, having three small roses heads hanging from it. Two were yellow, the middle one was red. It was explained to her that this item was in fact magical. More than that it was a Necklace of Fireballs. Each "flower" could be plucked from the chain and thrown. Where it landed a ball of fire would erupt! Of course there were risks - you really didn't want it blowing up whilst you were wearing it. Nor did you particularly want to catch your friends in the blast area, which was by all accounts, not insignificant. Still, it was pretty and Torryn bought it for 1650gp.
Back in the hamlet she donated 200gp to the church so that they might distribute it to best effect to help those in need.
(OOC: Torryn saved 150gp)
Message received, Torryn understood the urgency. "That's a summons if ever I heard one." She said as soon as the young man had left. No doubt Mole considered the youth little more than a boy, but truthfully, Torryn wasn't that much older - so to her, he was a young man.
With her new necklace proudly on show and her iron headed spear in hand she declared herself ready to answer the summons.
Drack (Chris J) - hp 30/30 - AC 15 d20+4=7 ; Tuesday May 17th, 2022 8:59:17 AM
Failing to catch that it was an immediate request, Drack will follow Torryn's lead.
"I'm going to throw my gear on now, in case this is an urgent issue."
Drack will throw on his breastplate, and grab the rest of his gear before heading out with the others.

Mole recognizes the order and not a request. He gathers his things in his new haversack before waiting outside the inn.

Ash didn't need to be keen in local customs to know what that summons meant. He headed out with the others, making note of his money. (Ash didn't buy anything at the Catacombs)

Loryn was not overly paying attention as the young boy entered. His mind had returned to the apparent fact that the group was in charge and possibly would become the defacto owners of what was Minerva's
The bustle form Drack and Torry brought him back to the current situation and as the rest of the group is heading out, he falls in line to see what is so urgent

Manolo wakes up quite refreshed but still in sleepy drowsy mode of thinking. Asking the others still confused "What do captain Phaedra wants from us?.....it can wait till I wake up ," he says and continues as he stretches a little bit.

Torryn explained patiently before not so patiently prodding his outstretched leg with the butt end of her spear. She gave him a winning smile to mitigate that less gentle encouragement and then set forth to the meeting.
