Wil chides on of the Galvo and casts Sanctuary on himself, prooking at AOO from the G5. The Galvo hits him with a slam attack, inflicting 8 physical damage and 12 electric damage. (Wil needs to make a Concentration check with a DC of 10+(8+12)+1=31 to cast the spell successfully. Also, not sure what is meant by “takes a Defensive position.” Total Defense requires a standard action.) Kiwina hits G6 for 4 damage. Rolth hits G8 three times for 13 damage. Ayotnom hits G8 three times for 4 damage. Tsak takes a Total Defense action, making him harder to hit. Falco swims over to heal Tsak and heals him for 19 points (posted move also says Ayotnom.) (Falco cannot move both before and after his action unless I ‘m missing something. I moved Falco back on the board. If Falco was weighted down by 8 pounds or more he can walk along the seafloor at half speed. Otherwise he would need to make a swim check to move at one quarter speed.) Elyas casts Burning Hands at G5. Casting this fire spell underwater requires a DC 21 caster level check to pull off - I rolled 13 for Elyas so the spell fails underwater.
The Spiritual Hand Crossbows damage G8 and G5.
The water elemental hits twice G6 for 12 damage, killing the thing.
The orca swims over above G8, striking down at it for 25 damage. This kills the Galvo.
The shark misses its attack.
Only G5 remains. It moves 5’ to continue its attack on Wil, but first it needs to save against a Sanctuary spell (if Wil makes his caster check.) It saves with a 20. It attacks Wil with a bite for 5 physical damage and 10 electricity. Then it attacks with two slam attacks for 8 and 8 physical damage and 12 and 6 electricity.

Tsak walks over to grab a pearl and puts it securely in the sack at his waist. Then with the rest of the group he makes his way over to the Rose. He's looking forward to a hearty meal, but is a bit miffed when the cook serves up seafood chowder. 'Dang Eels' he thinks. It'll be a while before he gets them out of his head.
He sleeps well that night.

Elyas uses his bonded knife to use Identify, casting it and examining the husk to learn more. Spellcraft with Identify bonus and rolth's aid= 31 (wow, bad roll!)
let's gt this back to the Rose. It is certainly the thing we came for, and if we don't know what it does now we will have plenty of time as we trvale to learn more. we should get the magical compass recalibrated for our next underseas adventure
DM Mark Battle Map Friday June 10th, 2022 8:19:47 PM Rolth suggests getting back aboard the ship, and offers to help examine any enchantments on the husk. Kiwina helps everyone back to the ship. Ayotnom suggests the eight pearls may be worth 1,000 GP each. He casts Detect Magic and tries to figure out any properties the husk may have. Tsak pockets one of the pearls. He returns to the ship, and informs the cook that he’s not up for much seafood right now. Wil channels energy, healing all for 23 HP. Mak returns to the ship, making sure he has all his weapons and that none are left behind. Then he changes into some dry clothes. Falco keeps a sharp eye out for trouble as he heads to the ship. Elyas returns to the Rose. He casts Identify and then Detect Magic to try to figure out what this husk is.
As the Petals return to the ship, they are met by the crew. They offer congratulations and ale to celebrate the victory! They watched the whole thing, clearly worried both about the Petals and what might befall them if the Petals were overcome.
The husk is an odd thing. It looks like it could be worn on the back, almost like a carapace. As a magic item it would occupy the cloak slot.
Between Rolth, Ayotnom and Elyas, the Petals are able to divine that the husk grants it’s wearer damage resistance 5/slashing, and energy resistance of 10 against electricity.
The cook did indeed prepare seafood, but at Mak’s request he whips out some nice cheese and sausage, quickly warming up the sausage. He also has some cabbage he quickly cooks in with the sausage. It quite good as an alternative.
Nobody has the stomach for eels, including the crew.
They prepare the ship. ”Where to Captain Kiwina? Any special instructions? We’re still getting the hang of sailing her underwater. It’s a curious thing, but it seems just like sailing on the water. Not really sure how that works though.”

Tsak tucks into the cheese and sausage with cabbage. It's a strange mix, but hey, it's a strange wold.
He sleeps very well, but is still careful to get up in time for his turn at watch. He shares this time with Esmerelda, sitting in the crows nest, looking at the stars.
After the rest he feels very close to full health and marvels at how strong he and the group have become over their years of adventuring together.

Ayotnom says, "If the ensemble we are assembling should be worn together then all of us Taurs are out because our hooves or paws as the case may be render those flippers useless to us. I don't know if it would make sense to wait until we have more pieces of whatever it is we are collecting to figure out who may be the ideal candidate or not. I mean electricity resistance and the ability to shrug off slashing damage could be really useful in the right situation but if the items we are collecting are meant to synergize to where there is a hidden ability when you wear the whole set it might be better to wait and then when someone is wearing everything have us use detect magic again to see if we can suss out any hidden ability the entire set confers."

DM Mark- Back to Lovely Fargunia Monday June 13th, 2022 7:09:51 PM Kiwina gives the order to the crew to return to Fargunia. Wil seems glad to be alive. Tsak is ready to “sail.” He looks to get in the crow’s nest, but finds it high enough to be outside the air bubble that surrounds the ship. However, once the ship returns to the surface he is able to access the crow’s nest with ease. Rolth asks if anyone is interested in wearing the husk or the flippers. Ayotnom wonders aloud if weaning both the husk and flippers, and perhaps all the key items would have a larger benefit. He notes that taurs may be limited in what they can wear. Mak offers to try on the husk, wondering if it will resize to fit anyone. Falco seems glad to have a post battle sausage party aboard the ship. This raises some curious looks from the crew, but they are just as quick to go about their business and quickly ignore the comment. Elyas is not interested in wearing either item, and thinks spreading them among the party may be the best approach.
Mak, and perhaps others, will find that the husk can be worn in the shoulders slot. Some experimentation is that it has the same location limitations as any such item - you can only benefit from one magic item used in that location. You find the husk will resize to fit both small and large people as well.
Anyone trying on the fins will find that they also resize. Since they grant the wearer a swim speed equal to their land speed with an unnamed bonus of +10’, they could indeed benefit a land creature trying to move underwater, but they do not grant the benefit that Freedom of Movement does.
It’s still odd as the ship rises in it’s shimmering bubble of air. The sails seem to fill as if the underwater currents are simply air currents, and the crew is able to use both ropes and rudder to steer the ship as they would on the surface. Still, they are anxious to be in a familiar environment, and make for the surface. Breaking the surface, the bubble seems to vanish, and the ship moves to Fargunia.
Ramsey looks forward to getting more - and perhaps better - fresh food on your return, especially since Tsak looked a bit askance at the sausage, cheese and cabbage.
You reach the port as you did before. The Rose weighs anchor in the bay at Wedding City. You can see a dock area, but The Rose is too large a ship to use the small boat docks here. A boat is soon on it’s way out to you. You are asked if you have cargo to bring in or just passengers, and you are charged a gold apiece for transport. Ramsey comes along with a couple of crew. Your rowers are otherwise quiet on the way in, refusing to engage in conversation.
Once you reach the docs, you see it’s a bustling port as before. But this time, you are met with quiet looks of concern and mistrust. As the Petals disembark, an officious man approaches you.
”I am Algus, and I work with the dockmaster here. I do not need to know your business, but I would like your assurance that you pose no threat to our people. I presume you are here to meet with Ardian again. Again, I do not need to know your business, but what assurance do I have that you will not breach the privacy of the people of Fargunia? Ardian is a collector of lore. Can you tell me what sort of information he collects? Is he providing you with inforation about people of this town?”
The two men with him eye the Petals somewhat suspiciously, but remain quiet. None are armed. You suddenly seem to have all in earshot listening for your response, though most try to pretend they are not listening.

As far as our attention to the privacy of the people of Fargunia, we have thus far visited this place twice, and not had any claim made against us for any such invasion of privacy. We fully intend to continue to respect the privacy of the people here. In that respect, I cannot fully answer your next question, regarding what sorts of information that Ardian collects, as he is as entitled to privacy as any other here. That said, I have no reason to gainsay your characterization of him as a seeker of lore, and he has scrupulously avoided giving us any information about the people of this town. We are on a quest to thwart the threat that is The Deep from returning. Ardian has set us on this path with the lore he has collected being instrumental to our success thus far. We need to keep going on the path we are on and thusly expect to return to Ardian several more times after we meet each challenge he has appraised us of. As Rolth has pointed out in treating with us he has been observant of the privacy of those in this town and has only shared with us the information we seek in being able to thwart The Deep. Considering the risk The Deep poses to everyone, for one who is obviously concerned with the safety of this village you should be wishing us and Ardian well in this endeavor. I understand and can respect your desire for privacy and our mission has nothing to do with violating your wishes but our mission is concerned with the safety of all who could be threatened by The Deep after all."

DM Mark- Back to Lovely Fargunia d20-1=10 ; Tuesday June 14th, 2022 7:33:07 PM Rolth attempts to allay Algus’ concerns. He is very diplomatic in his response. Strangely, Algus seems somewhat satisfied that Rolth pushes back on his inquiry about Ardian. Ayotnom echos Rolth’s words, adding that the Petals are working with Ardian to defeat something called The Deep, and that The Deep poses a threat to Fargunia. (I rolled a diplomacy roll for Ayotnom since he chimed in while Rolth was trying to win them over and a 10 is a pretty neutral roll, so no harm, no foul.) Both Rolth and Ayotnom note that Ardian is only disclosing lore unrelated to Wedding City and Fargunia’s citizenry. Kiwina, Elyas and Falco remain silent. Tsak tries to remain silent, but certain elements seem to escape his digestive system, causing both sound and smell. He moves away a bit. Mak tries his hand at diplomacy, offering these men some payola. Wil mentions the victims of The Deep, and echoes Ayotnom’s warnings. He asks their concerns with Ardian, and this seems to offend them.
Ugh. These guys are kind of complicated. Sheesh.
Sense Motive DC 10:Highlight to display spoiler: {Ooof. These guys definitely noticed Tsak’s flatulence, but clearly are pretending they did not. Tsak’s flatulence is his business.}
Mak’s diplomacy roll combined with an offer of money is taken as an attempt to bribe officials in their normal course of business. The two quiet men suck in their breath at the offer, exchanging glances and looking expectantly at Algus.
Algus eyes narrow as he draws himself up to his full height. He replies to Mak, ”You are new here sirrah and your friends are kind, so I shall let this be a warning. Attempting to bribe an official of Wedding City is a municipal offense, and a rather serious one. But one that I shall let pass. This time.”
Still, the man is more intrigued by Ayotnom’s and Wil’s mention of a threat to the people here.
”We find Ardian’s peddling of secrets and lore … distasteful. But he has not broken any of our laws that we are aware of. Still, there are times when threats to the security of our people must give way to privacy. I accept your assurance that Ardian is not violating our right to privacy. Since you have mentioned it, I should know what threat this Deep poses to us? How Deep is it? I wonder that Ardian has not come to us about this matter. Indeed, if you are acting in the interests of Wedding City and Fargunia, you should be recognized for your service, even if discreetly.”

Rolth is conflicted over whether to roll his eyes at Mak's effrontery, or give him the side eye to shut him up, but in the end does neither. He gives thanks that his olfactory senses are not as keen as a full lion's, given Tsak's proximity, and focuses back on Algus and his companions. Those worthies are clearly concerned about the threat, but put off by the public discussion, overt bribes, and more.
"We are glad that you accept our genuine assurances, and appreciate your discretion in all these matters. As far as the Deep, perhaps it would be best to discuss that more discreetly as well. I should not like for frightening rumours to get about, should someone inadvertently overhear a few of our words on the wind. Is there some suitable place nearby where we could privately trade current information about this threat for recognition or future information about this threat, so that we all emerge equally better off? I think we could spare a little bit of time for that before returning to Ardian. What say my fellows?"

Kiwina thinks these men would like to know more about the Deep, but wonders if their culture would permit them to trade information with the Petals when the Petals have already said they are trading such information with Ardian. It almost gives him a headache wondering whether Ardian would morally have to be included in the conversation to avoid anything they might consider a conflict of interest -- and which Kiwina would no doubt consider idle banter.

Tsak senses some conflict in the men, presumably between the local customs and the requirements of leaders in the community. He also senses that most of the group are aware of his current predicament, and choosing discretion. He's glad Mak hasn't picked up on it yet. Looking around he is relieved to see no naked flames in the vicinity.
Rolth's suggestion of a discreet meeting place makes a lot of sense, Tsak will go along with that assuming its well ventilated.

DM Mark- Back to Lovely Fargunia Wednesday June 15th, 2022 7:42:59 PM Ayotnom tries to convey how serious a threat The Deep is without going into detail. Rolth suggests to Algus and the Petals that they have a discussion with the man in private. Kiwina tells the children there that he is not a horse but a centaur, and that there is an island with many centaurs a few days away. Tsak is fine with a private meeting, so long as it is well ventilated and free of open flames. Mak shocked that his offer of money was so abruptly rebuffed. Falco shows off his owl-like head turning for the kids. Elyas also suggest a more private venue for discussion, but says he understands if these men would rather not know and simply trust the Petals in this. Wil assures the men that the Petals only want to help.
There are a number of busy workers, a few and gagged betrothed couples holding hands, and a few folk simply enjoying the day and the nice weather.
The children seem impressed and intimidated by the HUGE horseman there. An older girl pipes up in response, ”Oh, yeah, shure. A centaur. I’ve heard of centaurs, just never seen one. So, that must be a minotaur and that one a liontaur. Wow.” Several seem to want to draw near, but nervously look around at the adult nearby.
A couple of the kids move up to Falco, and laughs as he says, ”You’re a funny birdman. I like you. Can you fly and stuff? Can you see in the dark like an owl.” The other child elbows him and give him a look like he’s being rude.
Algus absently shoos the children away as he says to the Petals, ”Yes, a more private locale would be better.” As you go, you sense that these three are known here, and given some difference. People try not to be obvious in their observation, pretending to not notice even as they scurry out of the way.
Ramsey mutters, ”This place is weird.” Then he says to the Petals, ”I’ll go see to some supplies, and some better food for master Tsak and his kitty.” He trots off with his two crewmen.
Algus leads you to a nearby warehouse, and as he enters with his two companions he directs several workers to leave and give them the place. They comply without complaint. You also notice neither Algus nor these two men appear to carry any weapons. Their clothing is serviceable but well made, and they wear some understated jewelry and fur trimming that suggests people of wealth and importance.
Does everyone go?
Algus addresses the Petals that come with him, ”While we in Wedding City do value and protect individual privacy, you speak of a threat to us which makes this a matter for the City. ”Now then, what is this Deep and how is it a threat? Do you have anything to back up this claim? I do not mean to impugn your character, but this is indeed a big claim? Is Ardian the cause of this? We have no quarrel with him, other than the fact that he seems to buy and sell information.” This last bit is said with some distain.
His two companions seem to nod in agreement, listening intently to what the Petals have to say. It seems odd to you that they have neither asked your names, nor offered theirs beyond this Algus fellow.
How do you respond?
Ayotnom Ogini Hugh C 51/76 | AC : 28; Touch 17; Flat 23 CMD 27 Wednesday June 15th, 2022 8:44:48 PM
Ayotnom goes to the warehouse stopping to get the husk and the flippers before he does so.
When he enters the warehouse and it clears out and he is asked about the Deep he says, "Ardian told us that long ago the creature had a gateway from another place into the Wold. Nearby underwater races were subjugated and fell thrall to this thing, some even becoming transformed. Eventually heroes rose up from these aquatic folk and fought the creature back, but they were not strong enough to destroy it, so they sealed it with a Teucri artifact and broke the artifact into several items and hid them. However the power of the seals is beginning to fail and The Deep, this creature, is beginning to push back through. Ardian became aware of this due to his divinations but he was an old man and he sought us the 8 Petaled Rose to deal with this threat as we have experience with similar things in the past. Therefore he wanted us to set out and retrieve these keys so we can vanquish the Deep once and for all and prevent others from falling thrall. We already have this husk and these fins. There are several other items we have been instructed to collect hence my remark earlier about needing to make several trips back and forth from her and other ports of call but as I said we mean no harm to Wedding City or the privacy of its denizens. We just wish to be free to go about our business and collect the rest of the keys we need to put an end to The Deep once and for all."
At the mentioning of the husk and the fin he shows the Wedding City folks the 2 items.

Rolth nods as Ayotnom does a fine job of telling the most recent lore that we learned about the Deep and what must be done. He adds, In our adventures across the Taur Isles, we have run into signs and minions of this evil power known as the Deep. The Deep is some sort of malevolent power that seems to be making a play for renewed domination in the region. It's minions distribute magical amulets that warp the minds of their wearers, turning them into mindless, aggressive pawns. We met a chuul that used a piece of the Deep, part of a tentacle, to cursedly warp the flesh of those in its thrall, making them tentacled monstrosities. The chuul was accompanied by frog-like Deep Ones. The chuul promised us power if we joined it, and madness, despair and death if we resisted. Earlier, we encountered and defeated a sort of reverse Cecaelia named Aaroth, who told tales of a coming doom that was beyond our understanding. And on our sailing journeys, we passed a great rock formation that looked tentacled as well. If you have seen or later find any signs of such things, like tentacle amulets, folk behaving oddly or aggressively, and the like, please share that information with us in equal measure that we might use it to be successful in our quest to defend this whole area from the threat."

DM Mark- Back to Lovely Fargunia Thursday June 16th, 2022 11:38:14 PM Ayotnom summarizes (rather efficiently) what he knows of The Deep, showing these men the husk and the fins that have been found. Rolth adds details about The Deep the Petals encountered before Ayotnom joined the party, including the offer of “power if we joined it, and madness, despair and death if we resisted,” and a promise of coming doom. He meetions the tentacles amulets and strange rock formations, asking these men to let the Petals know is they encounter such things. Kiwina worries about the nuances and mores of this culture, fearful of missteps. Tsak nods approval at Ayotnom’s summary. Wil goes in search of a pub to see if he can find more information. Mak goes with Wil, trying to bring Tsak along. He tries to assure Rolth everything will be fine.
In the Warehouse, Ayotnom, Rolth, Kiwina and Tsak share some information. The three men take all this in, listening intently. They are interested in the husk and the fins, though only Algus touches them after politely asking to see them. He examines them in some detail before handing them back. The other two men recoil at parts of the tale, though Algus seems to be made of sterner stuff.
Algus replies, ”As I said I am Algus, assistant Dock Master in Wedding City. My friend here is Nevent, trader and Captain of the vessel Silent Kiss. This is Herol. He owns the cooperage works, and oversees packing of a good many things for shipment. I have heard tales of tentacled amulets relating to nearby isles populated by the Tauric races. I chalked these up to just sailors’ tales. But I see they may have some truth. Assuming what you are saying is true, we urge caution. Ardian’s information seems to sell his information, which we detest. While there are times when information has value, but it needs to be a trade of information not sale to the highest bidder. In any event, you are free to go about your business.”
“You have given me much to think upon, and I thank you for that. Should you run into any trouble here, you may give them my name or send for me. Tell them you go with my knowledge and you should have free reign here. But do not pry into private affairs while you are here - I cannot protect you from that.”
“Tell me, is there information that I can provide you?”
The other two men curtly echo Algus’ acceptance of the Petals and their information.
Algus adds, ”I tell you what, should you defeat this Deep thing please inform me of this. If you can show that it posed some threat to Wedding City or Fargunia, I would appreciate knowing that as well. We take threats to our way of life seriously. And nobody like things with tentacles.” The others nod their heads in agreement.
—-----------------------------------
Wil and Mak look around. Curiously, there are few signs or pieces of written information. They do some a place with rough men coming in and out, and a huge wooden tankard fixed above the door. They go to this place, and enter.
It’s a busy tavern. Servers move about the place. It falls silent for a moment as Wil and Mak enter, but soon a bard in the corner pipes up, making his words into a song.
“Newcomers are here with tales to tell. But do they bring gold for their ale as well? Perhaps they come seeking marital bliss, No gags and a bond? It seems something’s amiss!”
The crown roars with laughter, cheering the bard’s jeers of these new comers. They seem to welcome Wil and Mak to join them.

DM Mark - Getting the Party Back Together Saturday June 18th, 2022 3:02:15 AM Tsak doesn’t spend time in the warehouse, and heads out to find Wil and Mak. He spots them going into a tavern and rushes to join them. Mak welcomes Tsak and half-jokingly warns him about the bard. Wil thanks the bard for his song and asks for another. He also manages to keep the crazy in check. Kiwina is both pleased and puzzled things seem to be going well with Algus, Nevent and Herol. Elyas assures Algus the Petals will keep him informed, and asks him to be on the lookout for any tentacled amulets. Falco responds to the children before casting light on the shoe of one. The children squeal in delight, and the one with light on his shoe feels quite special. In the warehouse, he asks about the privacy rules in Wedding City hoping they are written down somewhere. Rolth thanks Algus for his cooperation. He asks if there is anyone else in town that might help in the Petals quest?
The bard responds to Wil. ”Ah my good cleric. There is always another song. What say you? Is a song worth buying me a drink? You can be the judge of that. He launches into a song about Fargus the founder of Fargunia. You learn he led his people here to safety from their old home away to the north and the west in the Cursed Lands, “far from prying eyes and grasping hands.” The crowd seems to know this song and joins in on the chorus.
The drinks are good and the company turns out to be more relaxed than you’ve encountered elsewhere. Raucous, unfamiliar, and odd at times - but decent company here at least.
After a bawdy song about a woman that sells seafood by day and herself by night, he then sings a song about the current ruler of Fagunia, his Lofty Grace, Barmurg, Archbaron of Fargunia. It’s mentioned that he is the son of the Adopted son of Fargus, and that he rules well, and steady, asking little and giving little in return.
The bard asks from across the room who Wil, Mak, and Tsak are - where are they from, why are they here, what do they seek here in Wedding City? This questioning seems rather odd given what the party has encountered, and the bard is the only one asking questions of the three.
—----------------------------------------------------- In the warehouse, Algus responds to Falco.
”Certainly we have many written laws, rules and exemptions to protect the privacy of people in Fagunia and Wedding City. But really, it is just common sense - a person’s secrets are his most valuable possessions, are they not? You must understand, people do not buy or sell information in Fargunia, rather it is exchanged. Buying or selling people's information would dehumanize them! No one asks for information or digs into someone’s past without giving equal information about oneself or a subject desired by the others involved in the exchange. If we are friends, we share information with each other and in doing so enhance each other's lives.”
The other two nod in agreement.
Having misunderstood Rolth’s request for anyone that might help in the Petal’s quest, Algus replies, ”What sort of help do you seek? All are free to pursue commerce here in Wedding City. Goods may be bought, ships may be hired. So long as no questions are asked that would pry into personal matters of course.”
Herol eagerly adds, ”Yes, tell me what it is you need, and I should be able to help you get it."
Assuming those in the warehouse are finished, Algus and his friends will usher you out of the warehouse and back into the bright sunlight outside. You think you know the way to Ardian’s tower.

DM Mark - Getting the Party Back Together Monday June 20th, 2022 6:36:21 PM Wil offers to buy a round of drinks. This makes him popular, and costs him about 50 gold. Tsak announces you are adventurers who like to adventure and are committed to adventure. Rolth asks Algus where the nearest tavern is. Kiwina echoes this, adding any nearby bars might be good to know about as well. Ayotnom thanks the men for better explaining some of the culture and mores of Wedding City. Falco also seems glad to have some insight into Fargunia’s rules.
Rolth, Kiwina, Ayotnom, Falco and Elyas are directed by Algus to the nearest tavern - which seems fairly straightforward. The men also try to describe where some better taverns could be found, but without good signage, the Petals are entirely sure they could find these places without help.
Fortunately their first stop is the one they need.
They approach a noisy tavern and they have a hard time squeezing in. The place smells of sweat and beer. There they see Mak, Wil and Tsak are the focus of attention - and they seem to be rather popular just now, as a bard makes some good natured jibes at the three.
The trio are asked by one of the only people in town that seems actually ask questions why they are here. They limit their responses to vague reference to being adventurers, but seemingly adventurers that have gold as Wil buys everyone drinks. The patrons there are grateful, and cheer as they slap Wil on the back. But they never actually enter into conversion with the Petals.
As the other heroes enter, the bard calls to them too. ”Ah, more of you, eh? Why this place seems to be crawling with adventurers seeking, well, adventure? I wonder what has this armed and armored crew has been up to? You don’t look like you seek weddings here in Wedding City. What are you here for? What tales do you have to share?”
He smiles as he says, ”Perhaps you would make a good song. Well, you’ll make for a song either way. But I cannot sing you heroes if I don't know your heroic deeds.”
The crown cheers again as they look to all them Petals for an answer to the bard.
(We don’t need to drag this out - I’m just wondering what, if anything, you all share with this crowd.)

Well then, consistent with local custom, let me trade you a song for your song. Here's one from the middle of our time together, called The Demon Went Down to Imod City." Rolth unslings his sargrass lute and begins with a flourish.
The demon went down to Imod City He was lookin' for a ship to steal He was in a bind 'Cause we were close behind And he was willin' to make a deal
When he came upon this young taur Strummin' on a lute and playin' it hot And the demon jumped Into the back room And said, "boy, let me tell you what
I guess you didn't know it But I'm a fancy lute player too And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you Now you play a pretty good lute, boy But give a demon his due I'll bet a the Herald whole Against your soul 'Cause I think I'm better than you"
The boy said, "my name's Rolth Niheow And it might be a sin But I'll take your bet And you're gonna regret 'Cause I'm the best there's ever been"
Niheow, tune up your lute and strum the catgut hard 'Cause hell's broke loose in Imod City, and the demon deals the cards And if you win, you get this ship that elementals hold But if you lose, the demon gets your soul
The devil opened up his case And he said, "I'll start this show" And fire flew from his fingertips As he struck a chord down low Then he pulled his claws across the strings And it made an evil hiss And a band of demons joined in And it sounded something like this
{insert cacaphony}
When the demon finished Niheow said, "well, you're pretty good, old son But sit down in that chair right there And let me show you how it's done"
He played Hell Hounds on the Trail, run boys, run The demon's in the House of the Violet ones Halfling in back room pickin' up dough Beat the Eight Petaled Rose? No demon, no
The demon bowed his head Because he knew that he'd been beat And he laid that golden instrument On the ground at ol' Rolth's feet
Niheow said, "Aaroth, don't come back If you ever want to try again I done proven it once you son of a bow I'm the best that's ever been"
Once done, Rolth offers thanks and good night, and tries to get the party out of there and back on the quest, heading for Ardian.

Elyas tries to come up with an appropriately vague answer to what the adventurers are doing here, but before he can come up with something that sounds good rolth bursts into song. Elyas smiles and claps along with the song then orders a drink.
DM Mark - "We've got secrets." Tuesday June 21st, 2022 1:40:07 PM Wil finds his judgment is becoming impared. So he buys another round for everyone. Rolth’s eyes light up at the opportunity to perform, and he does not disappoint. Ayotnom says that Imod himself has called him to his current task, though he hesitates to say more as there are spies about. Then he mentions his personal quest to kill someone in revenge. At this, people pull back from Ayotnom. Nobody wants to be mistaken for whomever he seeks to kill. Kiwina remains quiet, keeping an eye on Wil. Tsak moves to Wil to get him up and moving. Mak rises to leave with the others, careful to keep a hand on a table to steady himself as he says, "We've got secrets. We shouldn't share them." Falco throws back a jibe at the bard. One look at Wil’s state tells him another round of drinks may not be a good idea. Elyas claps along to Rolth's song.
Rolth’s singinging is on point, and even his lute playing is good. The crowd erupts and several patrons use Wil’s money to send drinks his way. The bard takes off his hat and bows to Rolth, ”You have taught me a new song this day, one I shall remember. May I know your name so I may give you credit when I perform it in the future? Also, where do you hail from and where are you going?”
As the Petals make their way out of the pub, the three more inebriated members in tow, the bard asks, ”If indeed you are adventurers, what is the name of your group and the ship you sang about? How shall I sing of your exploits? I can always make up an entertaining name for you, but that is usually not appreciated.”
The crown cheers Wil out as he leaves, many there raising multiple tankards as he stumbles out.
Once out, the Petals are able to recall where Ardian’s tower is. They make their way there. Knocking on the door, they are met with a call asking who is knocking. Once they identify themselves, they are let in by Rainard who is clearly relieved to see them. ”Ah, you have returned. Master Ardian was becoming a bit agitated, which made me a bit worried for your safety. Come, come. I will let him know you are here.”
Soon you are meeting with Ardian. The old man is bent with age, and he gives the Petals an appraising stare for a moment. ”You’re back. I am quite glad, though I was a bit worried. Long has this prison been in place, so these are no easy tasks. But it’s clear that you were the right ones to answer my call. Come, show me the next key you have found.”

Realizing he has been seen, Rainard begins to stutter, "I-I-I'm s-sorry, I-I just find this so fascinating, and my curiosity got the better of me." Turning to Ardian he says, "I-I'm Sorry master, please forgive my intrusion." Turning to the Petals, Ardian calms down and says "I apologize for my apprentice. He is a fool, but he does show promise at wizardry. Now which challenge would you like to do next? Tsak wonders if the interaction between Ardian and Rainard, as well as the Petals's reaction is the challenge of discernment, but than he remembers that he is dry.
Elyas votes for Discernment, and asks if Ardian may have any insight.
The Challenge of Discernment - The Guardian will offer a question, you must find a solution. The heart is what you seek.
At first it appears that Ardian is going to get into an argument with the Petals over how a master should teach his apprentice, but instead he starts to chuckle, "Old gruff man you say? I suppose I fit that description, but that is no excuse for eves dropping, and while curiosity is helpful for those who wish to obtain mastery of the Arcane Arts, knowing when to ignore such urges can increase ones life span. Rainard is smart enough to know that the use of magic to clean the bathroom while under punishment would be a bad idea, but don't worry, I'll probably forget about this whole thing by the end of the day." He says the last bit with a wink, indicating that his bark may, in fact, be worse than his bite.
With that, the old Wizard puts his hands in front of him, touching his finger tips together, with his fingers separated, touching his lower lip with his pointer fingers, as though in thought. So you've decided to attempt the Challenge of Discernment. I wish I had more insight than I do but like before, my knowledge about the challenges is limited to the cryptic clues I've ascertained in my studies. I have complete faith in your abilities, and trust that you will have little trouble defeating this challenge, like you did the previous two. I must confess I was skeptical of your abilities at first, but you have twice proven your ingenuity. Adjourn to your ship, and I will arrive in the morning to reset Garmin."
Is there anything anyone wishes to do before departing on the next challenge?

Falco briefly wishes he wasn't warped into a beastfolk, but is certain the Petals will prevail.
Mak complains about how ineffective he seems to be underwater.
Wil is ready for a vacation.
Rolth suggests Mak use the flippers to become more mobile underwater. He also makes some spell prep suggestions.
Kiwina offers to make Mak a weighted belt out of some rope and some sledgehammer heads. He offers to make one for whoever wishes to have one.
Kiwina makes as many weighted belts as needed for the party, and then everyone adjourns to their bunks, for the night. Everyone awakens to a a light rain, though they feel well rested. Ardian arrives shortly after you have broken your nightly fast, and makes the now familiar recalculations to Garmin, grumbling under his breath about the rain, the whole time. Once finished, Ardian says his good byes, than vanishes. It doesn't take any training in the knowledge of the arcane to discern that he just teleported away, apparently he was done with standing in the rain.
You sail for a few hours in a light rain, the kind that is almost pleasant, especially since the temps are comfortable, but after a few hours, the weather breaks, as the clouds disperse and the sun presents itself.nothing of interest happens through out the day and you go to bed that night wondering how long it will take to arrive at your new destination. Your question is answered around noon the next day when you here the cry "Land Ho!". You look ahead and you see a small island ahead of you. Garmin seems to be pointing directly toward the island. You are too far away to make out any details of the island, but it does seem to extend fairly high into the air, indicating it may have or be a mountain.
How do our intrepid heroes wish to proceed?

Rolth suggests sailing past the island to verify that the island is the destination and not something beyond. He suggests prepping climbing gear
Tsak is hopeful that this challenge may be on land, but still likes the idea of putting the weights on Mak. He climbs into the crow nest for a better look.
Mak is convinced that the island is some sort of beast, weighting to sink them as soon as they are on it. he doesn't desire to be encumbered by Kiwina's weighted belt, and instead claims the flippers. (OoC... While underwater, encumbrance actually works differently. The first 50 lbs of weight is used to keep you at the bottom of the body of water, and doesn't count towards encumbrance due to buoyancy. You still only move at half speed, since it is difficult terrain though.)
Elyas feels that an island destination would be strange, and things may not be as they seem. He agrees with Rolth that they should sail around the island, to make sure Garmin is pointing toward the island.
Wil finds the cry "Land Ho!" to be comical, and asks his "Friends" if this could be trully a land based challenge.
Kiwina orders the ship to circle the island, than set the proper course based on their discovery. He teases Mak, lightheartedly.
Ayotnom wonders if it is a giant turtle and mentions the need for a heart. He wonders if they need to enter it somehow.
Falco is happy for the prospect of being on Terra Firma, but his excitement wanes with the prospect of a potential climb.
The Rose sails around the Island, and the whole time Garmin's needle remains pointing directly towards it. You proceed to sail a little closer, taking soundings to find the water depth, and you discover that the water is plenty deep for safe sailing, and you notice that the island has 100+ ft sheer rock walls all along it's circumference. The whole thing looks like a mountain jutting out of the water, with it's rocky peak so high it is covered in snow. The whole mountain appears to be nothing but a giant rock outcropping, with no noticeable flora or fauna. Ayotnom is the first to spot it, but Tsak sees it a split second later. There appears to be a cave entrance at water level. Upon further inspection, it appears that Garmin isn't pointing at the island, but the cave entrance.

Mak suggests diving to determine if the mountain island is in fact just that, an island. as well as how deep the water is in the cave.
Elyas likes Mak's idea, and wonders how large the cave is.
Wil wonders if the Rose will fit in the cave.
Rolth agrees with Mak as well, and he also wonders how large the cave is.

Ayotnom keeps alert as they submerge.
Tsak suggests painting the Rose yellow, as he climbs down from the crows nest.
Falco is all in on submerging as the novelty hasn't worn off for him yet.
As the Rose submerges, and gets closer to the island, It is clear, that unless it is a massive allusion, this is an island of sorts. it's very narrow maybe a half mile in diameter at the most, and almost perfectly round. If it wasn't for the fact that it is made of stone, and the rock faces are of a natural appearance, you would swear that some god or immortal power decided to drive a spear, butt first, into the ocean. even the snow caped top resembles a spear head of sorts. A DC 15 knowledge nature reveals: Highlight to display spoiler: {It is defiantly a natural, though unique, phenomenon}
Underwater, the island continues down, as far as the eye can see, in it's "spear shaft" appearance. The cave has the appearance of a natural cave, and is easily big enough to sail the Rose into.

Wil recognizes the the sand sculpture is actually a sphinx, and he keeps an eye open for traps, as well as asking his archon friend for updates.

Rolth doubles down on the idea of casting eagles splendor (Sorry I couldn't help myself")
Falco likes the idea of taking a boat over to where the androsphinx sand sculpture is. He debates whether to cast water breathing on the party, but decides that it would be overkill.
The soundings, performed by the crew, reveal that it is safe to bring the Rose right up to the sand sculpture's ledge, which is good because the ledge is at the same height as the Rose's deck. The ledge is roughly 20 ft by 20 ft, with the 10ft by 10 ft sculpture sitting right in the center. You can bring the Rose within 10 ft of the rock wall, and can easily use the gang plank to cross over, if needed. Tsak doesn't see any places here ambushers could be hidden.
As you approach the ledge, a crack appears in the sand sculpture, followed by another and than another, until the whole thing is riddled with cracks. A moment later, the sand begins to fall away, revealing a living breathing androsphinx inside.
As the androsphinx is released from the sand encasement, it looks down his nose at the Petals sizing up each of you, before saying:
“I am Yaron, guardian of a key. But before you can have it, you must first answer me. One of you must answer, there are only two answers that may be given, and they involve a choice you would make to decide who’s still liven.
“You are overlooking a cave. You can see that there are five people you do not know trapped in one room, and your friend trapped in another. In front of you is a lever, and you can see that there is water rushing into the room the five people are in. The lever redirects the water to the room with your friend in. Wherever the water goes, everyone in that room will die and all you control is the lever.

Rolth turns to the Petals and says, "We must discuss this amongst ourselves before answering, so please don’t just blurt out an answer to the sphinx. Here are my first thoughts on the matter:
—All else being equal, a hero would choose to save five over one. —We don’t know whether all else is equal, though. If our friend would save hundreds of people in the course of an adventuring career, then maybe that would be the right choice. But because we can’t know that the other five aren’t also heroes or otherwise important to survival of people, then we probably can’t use this as a decision criterion. —The choice of answers is only implied, not explicitly stated. Nor is it stated whether or not we could affect the outcome by doing something in concert with the answer that we provide.Hypothetically, one choice could be to teleport into the room with our friend, teleport back out, then divert the water into that room to save the other five people. So the choice would be "to save everyone in both rooms" rather than "save everyone in a single room."
But I may be overthinking this :)

Alternatively can you get to your friend with a touch spell before the water engulfs their room? If so you touch them with water breathing"

Further, Kiwina is a pretty good swimmer and could go down to help -- although in either case it would be easier to save one person than five.
Although the pega-thing said they could only give one of two answers, Kiwina wonders about how the lever works. For instance, if it opens a gate, then could the friend not be asked to swim against the flow for a moment while the level is switched to his cave, then released into the cave with the five, and then the water diverted to the empty cave?

Falco stares for a moment in disbelief that this is the riddle. It is no riddle but it is the type of judgment call that the Petals could be called on to make. Working though the situation he starts to mumble to himself.
"A riddle with no correct answer is not a great riddle but I doubt we can use a trick answer. It is a classic moral dilemma so casting a spell or splitting the water cannot be the answer. With two choices each is correct and incorrect. You save the many over the one because that matches your personal moral framework. The same goes for saving the one over the many, unless there is more information. Is it one baby and five people on their death beds? Are the five family and the one a stranger? Is there time to detect alignment?"
As he mumbles he starts pacing back and forth, clearly upset that the question is an ethics problem. He pauses with a sigh.
"We should never make our ship self sailing! We don't need non-sentient vehicles having to decide if they should run over one or five people... Neverminded. Who feels most confident in defending both choices?"

Kiwina addresses his objections to the Petals -- aware that the sphinx will hear if it listens, but plainly still in discussion with his fellows. "If we lived in some strange world where a person's life is a person's life and is no more or less valued than another person's life, there would be merit to sacrificing one person to save five. But we live in a world where some people are good and others evil. We would be sacrificing one life of that we might estimate a value for in order to save five that cannot assess, just guessing whether some average result should be the basis for our choice. I don't think it should. We could give the decision over to the gods, but our experience with Domi leads me to believe that they would not answer in time even if they answered clearly. The decision remains ours. The details of the choice matter a great deal to what should be done -- yet we are given no details. Therefore, I reject the obvious choices."
"This is a situation that we have come upon, not one that we created. I know people who would argue that we have no moral stake in a situation that we did not help to create. If we move the switch, we involve ourselves morally in the situation and would be responsible for the death of the one. Yet we would not be responsible for the death of the five. However, I think this is also a position that I must reject. Seeing five people in need, I should help them if I am able. But the decision as to my ability is mine." If the other Petals poke into it, Kiwina may explain that there are things that he would accept as rendering him unable to help that others -- and especially anyone he did not help -- might consider immaterial. He agrees that Mak addressed the very important need to let their potential victim participate in the choice.
"We are here for the test of discernment. I think that the answer to the riddle is not what is important, but the character that the guardian of the key discerns in us as we debate it. He may or may not know that the Deep is beginning to break through the seal that holds it, or what we intend to do with the key. It may not influence him that we are fighing the Deep if he holds out a hope there may be others better able to fight the Deep."
"I say that the details of the situation determine whether we move the lever -- the ones this beast hasn't told us. But whether we move it or not, we will do what is in our power to save all six. I don't care if it's hard, or unlikley. If I am forced into a situation where people will die, and I have no ability to stop it, then I should next find and appropriately deal with whoever created the situation."

Of course the answer is purely in theory, because if we really found such a place, we would do everything in our power to ignore the requirement to pull or not pull the lever and we would use our combination of skills and magic to attempt to save all 6 people, not stand around debating while the water fills one of the chambers.
On my own I know at least 2 or three spells that could potentially save the person in the room that is filling with water. but i do not think 'save everyone' is one of the answers we can give here.

Mak wonders whether one of two answers means one of the given answers. He digs deep searching for some heroic insight, and realizes that the given answers are really their only options based on the situation, as described to them.
Falco realizes that both answers are wrong as well as right, based on the given scenario. He points out that if they knew more about the individuals, it could change their choice as well. He suggests never giving the Rose intelligence, and asks who feels most strongly about the answers.
Kiwina is still convinced there has to be another option.
Rolth agrees with Mak's original idea of getting the, hopefully, heroic friend's permission to sacrifice him to save the others.
Wil's "friends" are undecided as to which is best, giving a terrible answer, or killing Yaron.
Tsak feels that the heroic thing would be to save the 5, and is OK if someone answers accordingly.
Elyas feels saving as many as possible it the right course of action.
Ayotnom wonders if an alter ego may be able change the outcome, and wonders if Wil would be able to disable the water mechanism.

Mak is beginning to understand how Wil feels. He doesn't know which of the two answers is right, but he is certain that they will be attacked by an undead version of the deceased. Due to some heroic insight, he isn't sure if there even is a right or wrong answer, but he is sure one room or the other that has to be flooded. (OOC... Kiwina doesn't like the options, and in spite of Wil's insight, is convinced that they are both wrong, and Yaron is messing with them.
Ayotnom reiterates the riddle and points out the wording of the first part, wondering if there may be a clue in there somewhere. He mentions that since they don't know the 5 people, they could easily be horrible people, sentenced to death. After some mental gymnastics, Ayotnom agrees with Mak's insight.
Tsak lets Mak know that attacking or threatening Yaron is the opposite if discernment.
Mak shares his frustration with Tsak and even comes up with his own riddle. He does however keep his bow pointed away from Yaron.
Elyas tries to calm Mak, reminding him that Yaron hasn't threatened them yet, and that he probably isn't someone they want to tangle with.

Yaron continues to offer no emotion, even with Mak preparing for battle.

You’d think a sphinx would have a better riddle than that. He’s obviously not a very good sphinx or his riddle might have made some sense. Let’s get on with it and see what happens. Yep we are going to be transported into one of those rooms to fight undead while the area floods. I just know it. Perhaps we should ask the sphinx to actually ask us a riddle and not whatever that is he asked...a dilemma perhaps” Mak mumbled.
OOC: I totally feel robbed, but at this point I think the fault lies in the formulation of the problem. Riddles have answers, what we've been presented with is a dilemma. Flubbing the hero point revealed that at least, so I guess not a total loss. :)
"We should say something like this. While the dilemma you presented is thought provoking, it is not a riddle with a correct answer. If you require a response then we'd choose to save the most people and hope our friend understood our position."
