Up the Tree (DM Cayzle | Zeoll) Thursday June 30th, 2022 8:37:12 AM
The door opens. Inside are two blinking harpies. They were asleep, but your lack of stealth and bardic singing woke them up. Let's say there is no surprise on either side.
That means it is time to make two saves vs Harpy Song! DC15 Will save, +2 if you have ear plugs, which is everybody I assume -- except Bill, who is still above and not in this encounter.
Let's see if we can do this one without a map, my friends.

About to throw a rock, instead Mundhildur is captivated by the duet, so stands there, stupidly, listening.

Honor, with her ridiculous paladin save bonuses, has never stopped up her ears. Let's see if she regrets it now.
Nope, all good. [Will save 17 and 28]
She draws Virtue. "Your friends are defeated or fled," she says. "You are the only two left. We do not need to slay you; I will accept your surrender if you offer it."
[Ugh. Diplomacy 14, minus whatever penally for it being rushed. Glad that wasn't a Will save, I guess.]

(9 vs 15 = fail; 17 vs 15 = pass so still captivated)
Asimov is captivated so he stands there and does nothing.
Irony knowing the drill from the previous encounter moves forward to attack one of the harpies with a slam attack being immune to their singing since it is a construct.
16 vs AC; 6 damage if that hits.

Up the Tree (DM Cayzle | Zeoll) d20=18 ; d20=8 ; Friday July 1st, 2022 6:54:13 AM
Zeoll has a +4 by virtue of bard levels and +2 from the earplugs. His base Will save is +8. So he fails only on a 1. No problem.
"What should I do?" he asks his friends. [OOC: Them what's not acting, please give Zeoll an idea on what to do. Link in header!]

Zeoll, Irony, and Honor are unaffected. Elron and Asimov are affected by one but not the other ... each by a different one. Mundhi, please make two saves so we can see if it is the first or both that have affected you.

Assuming he needs to move and has only one attack, he. . . (hmm, looks like he raged 6 rounds in an earlier harpy fight). . . berserkishly swings his whappin' stick.

The one harpy dies, and the other surrenders.
After interrogation, you find that the very first one you defeated was the leader. These two are her chief minions.
You find each has a +3 ring and a +3 short sword.
The last one asks for mercy.
Mitch - The Twins HP 65/65 AC 26/12/24 Wednesday July 6th, 2022 9:19:47 AM
The Twins let the others ask their inevitable questions. If someone suggests killing the harpy they would object, as killing foes who surrender is bad business that will just make fights longer and harder in the long run. No one surrenders once you have that reputation.

Up the Tree (DM Cayzle | Zeoll) Saturday July 9th, 2022 12:06:18 AM
The last harpy agrees to your terms. SHe gives a count of all the harpies. There is one that flew away, one you defeated and let go, two that went out to the farm at daybreak, and this one. All the others are dead. You have killed 5, reformed two, and three are out there.
She explains that they took over the former theives guild building and enjoyed it. But now they will have to go.
But for sure, the fear of you will be strong enough to prompt them to flee to easier pickings. And this one has promised to reform.
You also gain some coin that the two stashed away. The silver and copper is trivial, but there is 450 gp and 275 platinum.
You have cleared this place. What will you do with it now?
SteveM - Elron | AC 21 (19 if raging), HP 39/49, DR 1/-- Saturday July 9th, 2022 12:27:07 PM "What do we do w' th' place? If'n we don't do nothing else about it, though, we ought'a tell 'em." Zeoll's earlier protestations aside, it isn't clear if Elron thinks burning the place is still an idea. If we aren't going to keep this place for our selves as a base of operations I vote we either turn it over to the authorities or see if we can find a way to destablize these platforms and knock down just the structure leaving the tree. If we aren't going to use it perhaps the local guard could garrison some men here? If not I say we keep the tree and get rid of the structures built around the tree." Asimov says

"Perhaps these structures can be put to good use by someone other than harpies. It's given me some ideas that could be useful down the road. And, this is a fine, tall, and stout tree. I don't want to destroy a tree that a camel can climb."
After giving it a bit more thought, she says, "There are three evil harpies still out there. At least, I assume they are evil. Should we not consider what to do about them?"
Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 45/50] Monday July 11th, 2022 9:01:39 PM
"Yes, we should report back," Honor says. "Let's tell Guardsman Tarla what happened here, and what the situation is. They should be able to take it from there."
She frowns. "Can anyone make a map?" she asks. "That was a big part of the problem; nobody knew where the harpies were coming from. If we can provide them a map to this tree, they can decide what to do about it."
Up the Tree (DM Cayzle | Zeoll) d20+7=8 ; Monday July 11th, 2022 11:55:26 PM

The party worries about the harpies still at large, but it seems unlikely to you that they will be a nuisance given how soundly their compatriots were thrashed.

You have some down time, then. The loot for the adventure looks something like this:
three masterwork clubs three feather fall rings 350 gp 450 gp and 275 platinum ring of protection +1 pipes of the sewers potion of cure light wounds three +3 rings of protection three +3 short swords eight potions of Cure Moderate Wounds (CL3) several pieces of fine nonmagical jewelry - platinum and diamond amulet worth 2,500 gp - two mithril bracelets set with black pearls worth 1,000 each

Zeoll weighs in with an opinion on loot division. "Elrron, Honorr, and Mundhi should get the otherr rrings of prrotection. But since therre are two of them and thrree of you, roll a d12 and the two highest rrollers get one. Whoever rrolls lowest gets the +1 rring of prrotection. How's that?"
"The +3 rings are worth 18 grrand each. We keep the potions, a CMW for each of us, and Irony can carry the two extra CMW and oen CLW potions for emergencies. If we sell the swords, the total remaining loot is worth about 36,000 gp."
The liontaur makes six loot piles:
(1) +3 ring, po: CMW
(2) +3 ring, po: CMW
(3) +3 ring, po: CMW
(4) +1 ring, feather fall ring, po: CMW, 11,000 gp
(5) feather fall ring, po: CMW, 13,000 gp
(6) feather fall ring, pipes of the sewers, po: CMW, 12,000 gp
[[two CMW potions and a CLW potion to be carried by Irony? Or Bill if Irony can't?]]

SteveM - Elron | AC 24 (22 if raging), HP 58/58, DR 2/-- Friday July 15th, 2022 6:44:31 PM
Elron is an experienced traveler who has been to many lands and adapted poorly to most all of them. Plus, he hasn't had experience with revenuers and doesn't like what he has heard. ("A revenuer is someone in th' government who collects revenue, right?," he mumbles.) He leaves this to the more experienced party members, confident that he has a decent amount of currency and the guy's only looking for five of whatever.
(OOC: He has like 20 pounds of coins (1000 gp).)
Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 45/50] Friday July 15th, 2022 7:05:58 PM
Honor listens carefully to Zeoll's explanation. "All right," she says. "I'll try to remember."
"And I have something for you," she adds. She gives Zeoll and Asimov each a platinum ring. "This is for a spell I can cast now," she explains. "It will let me absorb part of any damage you take."
She smiles at Elron and Mundhildur. "It isn't that I don't like you," she explains. "But I only have so many fingers, and the two of you are pretty good at defending yourselves."
Honor is, of course, willing to pay her taxes, so she hands over some coin and some leftover harpy jewelry.
[OOC: We're a bit over WBL, so I assume that's what the taxes are about.]
Death and Taxes (DM Cayzle | Zeoll) Friday July 15th, 2022 11:10:22 PM
The nobleman explains the ins and outs of the tax law. It all seems to be in order. He is not corrupt nor lining his own pocket.
[OOC: Yes, I put in a bit too much gold so that this would not be a true pinch! LOL!]
Zeoll | Cayzle | AC20 55 hp Friday July 15th, 2022 11:53:26 PM
Zeoll is happy to pay his taxes. "Is anybody shorrt of funds? I can help."
The taur does find someone to upgrade his leather armor. Then he is ready for the next adventure.
=====
OOC: Everybody gets a hero point as they level as well.

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 64/64, DR 2/-- Sunday July 17th, 2022 11:28:43 AM
Elron isn't the sharpest mouse in the wet sack at the best of times, and when it comes to taxes not only does he not understand, he doesn't want to understand. By the time his friends have convinced him that Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Malinton has valid concerns, and the chancellor has explained and re-explained what is needed with many asides and going down lots of logical rabbit holes (that are rarely all that deep), a position is reached that the chancellor and Elron agree upon. No one but Elron thinks that the ring Elron is left with is the one he started out with, but questioning that could raise the whole issue again and Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Malinton assures all it is imminently fair.
