Blizzard

On The Road Again - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony
Sunday July 17th, 2022 11:44:59 PM

With the legalized theft, ahem, I mean business of taxation over with our intrepid band of heroes is once again ready to press on. The first day of travel seems fairly uneventful but when you wake up on day 2 you can't help but feel a chill in the air. Everything is still and peaceful one moment and in the next you are bombarded with wind and snow...a blizzard.

Survival: 23 Highlight to display spoiler: { you think you can just make out the trail. perhaps you should follow it}

Because of the harsh weather and plunging cold you must make a DC 13 Fort check each hour or suffer 1d4 nonlethal damage. (if you succeed the next check is DC 15, fail and the next check is also versus DC 13; let's start with just 2 hours and then based on what you all post I'll figure out if any additional fort saves are needed)

Clearly staying put in these conditions are untenable. What do you do?

Zeoll (AC20 55hp) | Bill the Camel (AC20 33hp) | Cayzle  d20+11=15 ; d20+6=10 ; d20+6=24 ; d4=3 ; d20+11=27 ; d20+6=11 ; d20+6=18 ; d4=3 ;
Monday July 18th, 2022 9:41:10 AM

Zeoll mutters a prayer (Guidance) and thinks about the Nature of this situation ...

Survival 15 fails.

... but he has no insight on this.

For the first two hours, Zeoll suffers 3 hp nonlethal cold damage. [failed first save, made second.] "We need shelterr frrom this weatherr," the greensinger declares. Unless anyone else has a better idea, Zeoll suggests looking for wood and a place out of the wind.

Survival to look for shelter and wood: 27.

Produce Flame will suffice to light it if we find everything we need.

Meanwhile, Bill the Camel is suffering as is his master. [also failed, then saved, took 3 nonlethal]

If NO place out of the wind can be found, Zeoll and Bill, being large and long, will make a windbreak with their bodies, so that maybe only they will have to take damage.

[OOC: Forgot to factor in my upgraded cloak of resistance, but the extra +1 did not matter, so moot]

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 64/64, DR 2/--  d20+8=21 ; d20+10=16 ; d20+10=24 ; d20+8=11 ;
Monday July 18th, 2022 7:47:12 PM

(Survival = 21; fortitude = 16 and 24)

"This don't seem nat'ral", Elron ventures, although he has no idea what to do with that thought. Natural or not, two hours doesn't leave him thinking they can simply walk out of it. "Maybe we should look for fire wood."

(Survival = 11 to help Zeoll find shelter)

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 45/50]  d20+10=23 ; d20+10=27 ; d20+3=5 ;
Monday July 18th, 2022 8:46:39 PM

Chainmail is great for blunting enemy attacks, but it's not exactly cozy. Nevertheless, Honor does all right with the cold and snow [Fort saves 23 and 27].

But she knows this can't go on. "Yes, we need to find shelter," she agrees. She looks around, trying to spot something they can use. Even a shack would do, but the flying snow makes it difficult to see [Perception 5].

Rocks and Ice falls, you know the rest - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony  d20+1=11 ; d20+7=22 ; d20+7=19 ; 5d6=16 ;
Monday July 18th, 2022 11:57:08 PM

(Survival: 11 - to help with the shelter)

Irony is immune to the cold. Asimov succeeds at avoiding the cold

He says, "not that it will help in this weather, but I can fly for a limited time now and can discharge electricity or hurl a kind of fireball bomb, but I can only pick a few of these effects each day"

Irony will help anyone who looks like they are falling behind at Asimov's behest as they get to the shelter

==================================================

(OOC: let's do another 2 hours of saves from the previous round of posting. reminder DC or take 1d4 nonlethel damage save and the next one is made at +2
Zeoll's Fort save starts at DC 15 if he makes it the second one is at DC 17
Bill's Fort save starts at DC 15 if he makest it the second one is at DC 17
Elron's Fort save starts at DC 17 if he makes it the second one is at DC 19
Honor's Fort save starts at DC 17 if she makes it the second one starts at DC 19
The twins and Mundhi have to make 4 fort saves starting at DC 11 each one they fail they take 1d4 nonlethal, each they succeed the next DC advances by 2
Asimov's save starts at DC 17 and if he makes it the second one is at DC 19
Irony is immune to the cold being a construct
)

It takes a while but the party eventually comes together to make a shelter unfortunately for the party the shelter happens to be in the bury zone of an avalanche. You hear a terrible crash one minute and the next it is if the sky is falling down around you. Everyone needs to make a DC 15 reflex save or take 16 damage; success means only 8 damage is taken. If you fail the save you are buried but if you succeed you avoid being buried.

(OOC: buried: Characters take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage per minute while buried. If such a character falls unconscious, he must make a DC 15 Constitution check each minute. If it fails, he takes 1d6 points of lethal damage each minute until freed or dead.

those not buried: Characters who aren't buried can dig out their friends. In 1 minute, using only her hands, a character can clear debris equal to five times her heavy load limit. The amount of loose detritus that fills a 5-foot-by-5-foot area weighs 1 ton (2,000 pounds). Armed with an appropriate tool, such as a pick, crowbar, or shovel, a digger can clear loose stone twice as quickly as by hand. A buried character can attempt to free himself with a DC 25 Strength check.)

The hardy Twins mostly resist the cold (1 failure) and thanks to that allowing them to be extra alert they also avoid the avalanche (dex 16).

Status at start of post: Zeoll 3, Bill 3 nonlethal

Then saves vs cold at DC15 and 17:
... Zeoll makes first, fails second, takes 3 more nonlethal
... Bill makes first, fails second, takes 2 more nonlethal

DC15 Reflex Save vs avalanche:
... Zeoll rolls a 14, uses a hero point, and makes the save. He takes 8 damage.
... Bill saves, and he has evasion, so takes no damage from the avalanche.

If anyone is buried, first priority will be to dig them out. Bill is a great help here, with a max load of 900 lbs. That's 4500 lbs digging per round.

I realize that I have not been using Zeoll's skill very well. Survival DC 15 - Gain a +2 bonus on all Fortitude saves against severe weather while moving up to half your overland speed, or gain a +4 bonus if you remain stationary. You may grant the same bonus to one other character for every 1 point by which your Survival check result exceeds 15.

Zeoll rolls to ameliorate the effect of the weather ... Roll 14 fails! Ugh.

Well, after retrieving everybody, Zeoll looks again for shelter. Survival 25! Maybe that will work.

Status at end of post: Zeoll 6 nonlethal, 8 lethal damage; Bill 5 nonlethal. Hero points for Zeoll adjusted from 4 to 3.

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 19/50]  d20+10=15 ; d20+10=25 ; d4=4 ; d20+6=12 ; d6=6 ;
Tuesday July 19th, 2022 3:10:53 PM

Honor at last succumbs to the cold, taking 4 points of nonlethal damage. She manages to rally [second Fort save 25] just in time for the avalanche.

She takes full damage and is buried.

She spends a full round summoning Justice, hoping her paladin mount will help get her out of the snow. It is up to the DM how effective that is. :) In the first minute, Honor takes 6 more nonlethal damage.

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 64(1)/64, DR 2/--  d20+10=15 ; d20+10=17 ; d20+9=20 ; d4=1 ;
Tuesday July 19th, 2022 9:28:42 PM

Saves fort = 15, fort = 17, reflex = 20. . . Takes 1 non-lethal damage from the cold and none from the avalanche due to his evasion.

Elron contributes 500 pounds a minute to the rescue effort, unless someone smarter can tell him how to use a rope of climbing to help with the task.

As above so below - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony  d20+7=16 ; d4=1 ; d20+7=21 ; d20+7=18 ; d20+2=7 ; d20+1=20 ; d8=3 ; d8=6 ; d8=8 ;
Wednesday July 20th, 2022 12:58:09 AM

Save: 16 = fail; 1 nonlethal damage
Save: 21 = pass
Reflex: 18 = pass; 8 damage
Irony : 2

Asimov damage - 1 nonlethal; 8 lethal; Irony - 13 damage

Asimov gets a little impacted by the cold but manages to avoid the worst of the avalanche. Irony while immune to the cold is not immune to avalanches so the construct gets buried.

Asimov tries out his new medihaler -serious on Honor before pressing on. Honor heals 24 damage.

Asimov helps Zeoll build a new shelter (Survival 20)

=====================================

Everyone manages to avoid being buried by the avalanche except for Honor and Irony. Honor summons Justice and between Bill and Justice as well as everyone digging the construct and paladin are free of their icy prison in very little time.

The party starts looking for a new place to make a shelter but they have to move a bit away from the avalanche as there isn't really anything promising that can be used.

After a little bit of searching you find a relatively flat area a ways away from where the avalanche happened for you you to construct a new shelter.

(OOC: lets do 3 times the cold save this time so
twins start at 17 and need to make the fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal; success means next dc raises by 2
Zeoll starts at 17 and needs to make the fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal success means next dc raise by 2
Bill starts at 17 and needs to make the fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal success means next dc raise by 2
Honor starts at 19 and needs to make the fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal success means next dc raise by 2
Justice starts at DC 11 fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal; success raises dc by 2 for next roll
Elron starts at 19 and needs to make the fort save or take 1d4 nonlethal success means next dc raised by 2

You just get settled down in the new shelter when you hear another cracking; this time coming from below you. It would appear you have constructed your shelter on an ice plane over a frozen river and the weight of all the snow from the blizzard combined with you and the shelter is proving to be too much

The area the characters built their shelter upon suddenly breaks and they fall. Reflex save: DC 17 to avoid falling in. Those who miss it must make swimming checks at DC 10 (+1 for every 20 pounds they carry!) in order to get out, and must repeatedly try until they get out. Each person who fails the swim check must make a Fortitude save at DC 15, or take 2d4 nonlethal damage. Those who make it take only 1d4 nonlethal damage. Further, until they get warmer, the DC of all their saves against the blizzard increases by four starting next DM post

[Didn't notice trail: Survival: 10]
Save vs cold: 14; 27, 26, 13 (last one a fail, takes 4 hp nonlethal)
Survival - wood and shelter (with Zeoll): 23 - adds +2 to his 27, for 29
Reflex save vs avalanche: 20 (thus 8 hp damage)
Reflex save vs falling into river: 15/17. Technical fail, but she has a ring of feather falling and can levitate, so with a roll that close, I think she barely escapes the plunge.

Mundhildur helps out any friends who fall into the river and lowers one of her knotted ropes down for them to be able to climb out.

The Twins continue to prove to be hardy against the cold (made all saves). They don't manage to avoid taking a dip (reflex 8) but despite their heavy plate armor they prove adapt swimmers, quickly getting out of the cold water (swim 24, fort 23)

Anyone else who falls in the Twins can help get out (STR 6 to help pull people out)

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 40/50]  d20+10=15 ; d4=1 ; d20+10=12 ; d4=2 ; d20+8=18 ; d20+8=11 ; d4=2 ;

When she is dug out from the avalanche, Honor thanks her friends for their help, and thanks Asimov for the healing.

"We need to retreat," she says. "This storm isn't natural. Someone has magicked it up to kill us, and if we don't retreat, they'll succeed. We need to get down off the mountain and regroup."

She fails her next two saves against the cold and takes an additional 3 points of nonlethal damage. Justice makes his first save, but fails his second and takes 2 points nonlethal damage.

Since Honor has suggested a different course of action, one that doesn't involve building shelters, I'm not sure whether to roll the reflex save or not.

Zeoll (AC20) | Bill the Camel (AC20) | Cayzle  d20+7=26 ; d20+7=12 ; d4=4 ; d20+6=10 ; d20+6=16 ; d4=1 ; d4=4 ; d20+9=19 ; d20+7=26 ; d20+10=22 ;

Saves vs Cold Damage:
... Zeoll saves and then fails vs the deep chill, and takes 4 nonlethal
... Bill fails twice and takes 5 nonlethal

Then the ice breaks!
... Zeoll saves with a 19.
... Bill saves with a 26.

Zeoll tries to help his friends resist the cold as we follow Honor's lead and try to flee the storm.

Survival 22 gives all a +2 on saves vs cold for the next DM post.

HP Status at end of post: Zeoll (max 55 hp) 10 nonlethal, 8 lethal damage; Bill (max 33 hp) 10 nonlethal.
Hero points for Zeoll adjusted from 4 to 3.

Fort = 22, so no cold damage; reflex = 15, so fall; swim = 1, so wet; fort = 12, so 6 non-lethal damage

Elron's mad as a wet hen, by the way.

(Not that Elron's disputing Honor's suggestion to retreat, but retreating down a mountain and finding a river is plausible.)

Don't Break The Ice - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony
Thursday July 21st, 2022 12:41:59 AM

Asimov and Irony backtrack with the rest of the party.

======
(OOC: whether you made shelter or not, the river is supposed to be an encounter for this blizzard scene so Steve M is right the circumstances just would have changed and you would have encountered the river as you moved; please note I am only following the module I was given)

Since you decided not to take shelter you instead beat a retreat trying to go away from the mountain where the avalanche occurred. After a gradual slope you come across a relatively flat stretch of land or is it not land but something else?!?

The area the characters step upon suddenly breaks and they fall.

(OOC: I'm not sure the outcome of this one as not everyone rolled to avoid drowning so we will play it by ear. Those that already rolled can keep previous rolls; those that haven't will roll including Asimov and Irony in the next post. The rest of the module isn't like this but there are some things that are supposed to happen in this first scene, We will not do the saves vs cold as we are presumably on a minute scale not an hour scale depending on what happens with people vs the water; if everyone manages to get out in time then we will resume the hour scale)

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 40/50]
Thursday July 21st, 2022 1:17:22 PM

Honor wants to use a Hero Point for a luck bonus on her Reflex save. Since she's spending it before the save, she gets +8.

Mundhildur Karadottir, Jotun singing giant (7'4" or 10'5" as needed) (Kim) AC 19 Touch 13 FF17 HP 61/69, also 4 non-lethal  d20+4=22 ;

Mundhi, becoming a bit more cautious in this treacherous environment, manages to quickly step back as she hears the ice cracking. How many segments of the ice-covered river are there around here, anyway?

She again uses her ability to levitate, and her knotted rope, to help fish out any friends who do manage to fall into the cold waters. "Grab the rope!"

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 37/50]  d20+14=16 ; d20+2=10 ; d20+10=13 ; d4=2 ; d4=1 ; d20+2=16 ; d20+7=11 ;

And she still fails. Lovely. I would be inclined to say she just lets herself sinks and walks across the bottom of the lake until she can get out, but this is probably one of those bottomless lakes.

First swim check, fail. Ensuing Fortitude save, fail. 3 more damage.

Second swim check, succeed.

Justice also fails his Reflex save, but does not have to make swim checks because Honor immediately sends him back to the Celestial Realms, wishing she could go with him.

Having not drowned, Honor looks forward to dying of exposure.

Zeoll (AC20) | Bill the Camel (AC20) | Cayzle
Thursday July 21st, 2022 4:00:33 PM

Zeoll quickly gets ourt his 50 ft of rope, ties one end to Bill, and tosses the other end to Honor. He sings to inspire her to great competence -- a +2 bonus on skill checks.

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 64(19)/64, DR 2/--  d20=4 ; d20=3 ; d20=14 ; d20+10=22 ; d20+10=13 ; d20+10=24 ; 2d4=7 ; d4=2 ; d4=3 ;
Thursday July 21st, 2022 9:38:35 PM

In the previous post, I had an extraneous d20 which would have failed a swim check, and with these rolls Elron failed two more times. That's three more saves at DC 15 -- one of which fails causing another 7 non-lethal damage. I think. No, wait -- there's damage even on the successful rounds since this was not a reflex save, another 2+3. Unless grabbing at a handy rope helps.

A more logical variant is mad as wet Elron since hens aren't normally distressed by water,

Asimov: Reflex Save: 18
Irony: Reflex Save: 15 - bumped up to 17 with Hero Point use by Asimov

Asimov uses a hero point to reach out and prevent Irony from falling into the water as no one wants to deal with having to pull a heavy mechanical minion out of the water.

The pair then help Zeoll and Bill get Elron and Honor out of the cold and wet.

Asimov strength check: 8
Irony strength check: 20

Asimov isn't really a help but Irony is at great at getting them out

After they get everyone out Asimov uses his lighter to start a fire to try to help Honor and Elron out

Asimov damage - 5 nonlethal; 8 lethal; Irony - 13 damage

================================================

Working together the team manage to get Honor and Elron out of the water. The Twins were able to swim out on their own. Everyone else manages to stay dry.

Asimov builds a fire a ways away from the river near a sheltering tree that provides enough protection from the wind and snow for it to have a chance to ignite.

(OOC: How about it takes 2 more hours for the Honor and Elron to dry off so that means 2 more rolls; but the warmth of the fire provides a circumstance bonus of lessening the failure penalty of rolls by 1)

So 2 more saves versus cold from everyone except Mundi who I forgot in one post who needs to make an extra 3 to catch up
Mundy start DC 13 Fort, each time you succeed DC goes up by 2 for the first 3 that are catchup and 1 for the second 2 since you are near the fire, each time you fail you take 1d4 nonlethal
Twins start at DC 23 Fort, each time you succeed the DC goes up by 3, each time you fail take 1d4 nonlethal
Honor start at DC 19 Fort each time you succeed the DC goes up by 3, each time you fail take 1d4 nonlethal
Zeoll start at DC 19 Fort save each time you succeed the DC goes up by 1; each time you fail take 1d4 nonlethal
Bill start at DC 17 Fort save each time you succeed the DC goes up by 1; each time you fail take 1d4 nonlethal
Elron start at DC 21 Fort save each time you succeed the DC goes up by 3; each time you fail take 1d4 damage
Asimov needs to play catchup 2 starting with 3 starting at DC 19 which I will take care of now and he failed 2 so he needs to make 2 more at DC 21 for next post

The party huddles together by the fire for warmth while Elron, Honor and the Twins dry off. In the distance a howl is heard.

They should help those chilled warm more quickly, and help keep those wrapped in them from losing valuable body heat. She also has 24 flasks of oil, and 3 or 4 lamps. She has a 30'x6' canvas sheet. She has a few spears, 4 staffs, and along the way, going into the cold, she would have thought to gather up additional sticks, branches, and such, to make poles, and to build a wrap-around tepee of sorts. Canvas to keep out most of the wind, a fire - with a hole in the top to allow for smoke to exit, blankets, and food. She carries food. With the fire, she cooks. She has teapots and a good coffee pot. She puts them to use.

"Cold is our common enemy. I have brought things to serve as a remedy," she says.

Would not these devices and measures serve to mitigate the effects of the cold? Say, taken together, perhaps a +4 to people's saving throws?

"Something else that helps. We lie together, body to body. We girls can do so. You boys can do so with each other. That keeps us warm, too. I grew up in the mountains. You give up shyness to save your life."

Bill and Zeoll both make a save and fail a save. (Zeoll takes 4, Bill, 1)

Zeoll is actually wounded, and casts a cure moderate wounds spell. Usually that restores lethal and nonlethal damage to the same degree. We'll see if that also applies to this cold damage ... cures 19 lethal and (hopefully) nonlethal damage.

[Honor only failed her first swim check, so by the time the others organized to pull her out, she was probably swimming to shore.]

At the fire, Honor removes her armor, which is not helping at all, and concentrates on getting warm and dry. It must have worked because she makes her next two Fort saves.

The howling makes her look over, and she spots the wolves.

"Uh, we've got wolves," she says. Dry or not, she begins donning her armor.

Two more saves from the cold both fail, at 1d4 (-1 for the fire, not in the roll) each that's 2 non-lethal damage.
Perception = 29

Elron notices the wolves. "A bit of whappin' is just what I needs to warm up." He prepares for the inevitable attack.

Asimov says, "Should we maybe press on? The cold is bad enough but now there are wolves to contend with?"

(both saves pass)

=====================================================

Mundhi suggests they huddle together for warmth
The Twins are not one for modesty so they agree with Mundhi's plan
Honor takes her armor off then puts it back on when she notices the wolves
Zeoll casts a healing spell (OOC: it also worked on the nonlethal damage) and then volunteers to handle the wolves by singing them a song
Elron stretches a little thinking whoppin' on wolves might be a good warm up

Whether it is the camp fire or Zeoll's singing the wolves are content to stay where they are and watch you from various positions. Although the tree provides a windbreak of sorts it is still exposed on several sides and not a very defensible position should the wolves decide to attack. Additionally if you huddled together under Mundhi's blankets how would you be able see to know what the wolves were up to?

A suggestion has been made to press on. Do you hold your position around the campfire and wait for the wolves to act or do you do something else. (OOC: let's do a single Fort save for this next post; if we don't advance too far timewise with actions we can skip next post; failure is 1d4 nonlethal; success is next save at +1 due to fire circumstance lessening penalty)

The twins fail and take a minor amount of damage. They think holding up for the night is best as trying to move in the blizzard just exposes them to more dangers.

Zeoll and Bill take 1 hp nonlethal cold damage.

Zeoll says, "The wolves arre plenty natural, Just leave them alone and back away, then trry to get out of this weatherr."

Zeoll continues to try his musical diplomacy. Another Perform Sing check (treated like a Diplomacy check to change atitude to another seven wolves) -- 35!

HP Status at end of post: Zeoll (max 55 hp) 1 nonlethal, 0 lethal damage
Bill (max 33 hp) 12 nonlethal.

Asimov says, "Yes, the storm does appear unnatural and the wolves I am unsure about but can we really afford to sit here and slowly freeze? At least if we trudge on we can at least potentially eventually find a way out of the storm. It can't go on forever."

(OOC: Asimov fails his save)

Asimov damage - 8 nonlethal; 8 lethal; Irony - 13 damage

=======================================
The twins think holding up for the night is the best option

Honor agrees they should stay by the fire

Elron thinks his damp feathers aren't enough to protect him

Zeoll tells the others that the wolves are natural and attempts to use his musical magic as diplomacy.

The wind shifts, the fire starts to become effected by it and it sputters out. (OOC: staying put as is will no longer confer the reduction in penalty for making the save. Penalty is back up to 2; OOC2 the fire lasted long enough to dry Honor Elron and the Twins to where they no longer face a +4 penalty to the next save if they succeed on the save versus the cold)

The wolves continue to watch the party, neither running off nor venturing closer. If Zeoll's music had any impact on their attitude toward the party it doesn't show considering they are still keeping their distance

Mundhi fails her save, takes 2 more hp of nonlethal damage.

"If we get moving, then our movement may help warm us somewhat. Let's just try to keep from falling into rivers or the like again. And if we kill us some wolves, and drive the rest away, we'll have some warm carcasses to gather a tiny bit of warmth from. I have a bag with lots of rocks, and my longspears. The fire is out. Let us leave."

It's a blizzard so there's plenty of snow. The Twins suggest they dig out a shelter in the snow and/or build one to block the wind and rebuild the fire rather then blindly stumble into more danger. They have no grantee they'll find any shelter anywhere, but this spot seems relatively safe and if they can get an igloo or other working shelter made it'd be safer.

If someone actually has points in survival then the Twins will listen to their recommendation and do what they suggest to do.

Zeoll scowls and his tail twitches. "Yourr parrty drruid does not much like this talk of killing non-hostile animals to benefit frrom the warrmth of theirr dead bodies. Heck, I can charrm a couple and they'll lay down with us nice and cozy! But the betterr courrse is to just leave! Go back the way we came!"

"Why are we dithering? Come on!" The liontaur and his camel pal start leading the way back.

Survival check to find the best way back / out of this weather: 19.

Survival check to mitigate the cold: 11

Zeoll save vs DC22: fails, takes 4 nonlethal.
Bill save vs DC20: succeeds.

Honor's DC is ridiculously high by now; even her crazy paladin bonuses aren't enough to save her. She takes more damage.

"Yes, you're right," she says. "We need to get out of here before this storm succeeds in killing us."

She follows her companions.

(OOC: Unsure whether cold damage is this post or if this is a skip, so -- save roll is 14, if damage taken it is 2. . .)

Elron trudges after the rest. He tries to think of a joke to cheer everyone up, but it's so cold that the words freeze before anyone hears them. On the other hand, he's pretty sure that the snowflake that fell on his beak had goosbumps. "Say, Zeoll, we don't need to kill th' wolves -- just ask if we can borrow their coats."
