DM Hugh - Perhaps some statues need to come down
Friday July 29th, 2022 3:31:54 AM

Murphy comments on how suddenly his targets vanished and goes to hit the statue.
Succotash reflects that Valerie cannot damage the statue.
Prudence disintegrates a statue.
Kezzem goes over and hits a statue as well.
Nikolai runs over to Pru.
Tali explains to the others she needs to meditate or be useless for their next encounter and asks them to find a way to press on as she assumes her meditative position
The party manages to destroy the statues that are not suppressed in a single round, interrupting the demons that were going to appear at the end of the round. Now with 20 minutes to destroy the rest they manage to do so easily.

All goes quiet in the room.

When the last statue is sufficiently ground down or disintegrated, Murphy asks, "How do we know we can get through a period of rest undisturbed? Also, what's to keep the demons we just fought from returning?" Though he figures someone determined the statues were key to this, no one has actually said so aloud, to the best of the druid's recollection.

"Well with the statues destroyed, the portals have closed, so we know the demons can't come back that way. If we need to rest, I can cast Wall of Stone, a couple of times, sealing the doorways, and I can create a blade barrier creating a protected corner of the room to sleep in. I'm sure our other casters can create additional barriers. That doesn't mean we won't be molested of course, but it may give us a better chance, also it would make it near impassable to surprise us.

Murph returns to his normal self, no longer an air elemental. "Tali." He gives her shoulder a gentle shake. "Sorry to bother you. Do you understand how the statues work? Or worked?" He then adds what he already had asked the others, "How do we know we can get through a period of rest undisturbed? Also, what's to keep the demons we just fought from returning as we rest?"

How Stuff Works!

Tali without opening her eyes points at Mister Murphy and mouths the answer for her Message Spell:

Yes, Mister Murphy...Guess I should have said this sooner... through my Arcana knowledge, I was able to determine that these portals seem to be able to resummon the demons endlessly. I saw no way to magically disrupt them, but they seem to be powered by the two statues that flank them. Tough stone statues, but very destructible ones. Of course, I did suppress them with Mage's Disjunction!

Once the answer is delivered, Tali resumes her 2-hour meditative process.

"Thank you for that explanation, Tali." He communicates via the mental bond that Prudence set up for us a few hours ago.

And through that means, he continues. "Very well. Let us set up some defenses, as some of you suggested. Yet not so stout that air cannot get through, for most of us need to be able to continue to breathe. A watch should be kept. The spell casters may need less interrupted sleep. I can take first watch, or last watch. Prudence, I sense your amazing mansion will not function here. As we have gotten deeper into Scald's realm, extradimensional options have seemed to have diminished significantly. Perhaps, though, after we all rest, and if we are lucky enough not to have been disturbed greatly, we can enjoy Heroes' Feast.

"How does that notion sit with you all?" he asks the group. "Also, some of us appear to be in need of healing. Succotash, Prudence, Pressi, I gather none of you is unscathed. I do have wands of cure light wounds. If others care to bring us back up to snuff through other means, that would be fine."

Murphy asks how do we know we can get through a period of rest undisturbed and how do they know the demons won’t come back after the statues are sufficiently destroyed.
Succotash suggests that since the statues are destroyed the portals have closed so they know they can’t come back that way. He offers to cast wall of stone and blade barrier to secure the room and give them a little chance of being unmolested as well as making it impossible to be surprised.
Kezzem attempts to summon Rumpus and then asks what would happen if they wished to suppress the suppression magic in the room
Pru says she can do walls of ice and if they can figure out how to use the conjuration magic she could do Magnificent Mansion.
Murphy returns to his normal form and asks the meditating Tali how she knows the portals won’t come back and that they can rest without being bothered by them
Tali mouths a message to Murphy explaining things before resuming her mediation
Pressi borrows Murphy’s wand to patch her up a bit and suggests maybe one day they could get better communal healing items. She also says she’s sure if they build a cabin and rest they’ll be undisturbed in a sarcastic tone.
Murphy suggests they go with Succotash’s idea and if Pru wants to try her magnificent mansion she can go ahead but he doesn’t think it would work.
Succotash casts heal on everyone before they rest and then sets up the wall of stone and blade barrier
Murphy volunteers for first watch unless Pressi has other ideas
Pressi asks Succotash if she wants to join her coven then tells Murphy to wake her for second.
Nikolai would rather press on but knows it is a bad idea to press on when overextended and instead volunteers for first watch but Murphy also volunteered for first watch

The attacks start about 15 minutes after the party beds down. A swarm of small earth elementals pop out of the ground next to those sleeping screaming in terran and smacking the party. They are quickly and easily eliminated, but it interrupts everyone’s sleep. Any attempts to adjust the security of the room don’t seem to help - per the giant’s warning the enemy can see any and all defenses you set up allowing them to summon just the right creature to bypass them.

None of the attackers are particularly strong, but they don’t have to be, they just have to be loud, annoying, and rush to harass anyone sleeping. It seems that any rest inside the base of the enemy is doomed to failure, you’ll have to retreat far enough away that the enemy can’t see your every movement.

The group hears mentally from Murphy, "Out. If we are to recover, we need to retreat. Though I would pray we will not face the level of opposition we have gone through to get back to this place, it might serve us better simply to get out, rest, and recuperate.

"Or, we could try to move forward, and at least know what next to prepare for. So:
- Forward now as we are?
or
- Strategic Retreat?
I vote for the latter, but we should all hear each other's counsel, then act."

Of course I can cast normal cure spells, and I have 6 channels left, but they just don't have the same power to them, but I will do my best."

"I appreciate your offer Pressi, and I would consider it, but I'm not sure how that will work, Don't you have to be a bloodwitch to join a bloodwitch coven?"

"I guess we have no choice but to move on. Shall we see what's behind door number two, or should we retreat, and hope we don't have to re-clear the rooms we already have?"

Succotash will dismiss his blade barrier and wall of stone spells when the party decides what to do next.

Succotash is open to either suggestion.

DM Mitch Demon Portal Fight Map
Tuesday August 2nd, 2022 8:09:33 AM

Murphy mentally tells the others that if they need to recover then they need to retreat or they could press on. He votes for the strategic retreat.
Succotash says so much for a good night’s rest as he just burned a mass heal thinking he’d get it back. He says he has 1 left and a regular heal as well as normal cure spells and channeling but they don’t do as much good. He tells Pressi he appreciates her offer and asks how that would work and if you have to be a bloodwitch to join a coven. He is open to either suggestion either door number 2 or heading back the way they came hoping they don’t have to reclear what they already cleared.
Pru says she can keep going but if they want to retreat and rest that is fine too
Nikolai says he doesn’t want to reconquer a hill he’s conquered before and that they are in a God’s domain and it is probably best not to let the God recover what was lost either. He says their destination could be right around the corner so they might as well clear one more guardian and then rethink their position.
Tali says she wasn’t sleeping but they might as well press forward if they know where that is but it won’t be easy
Pressi moves to press on though she wishes she could even the odds. Maybe she can force a monologue out of the next villain.
Kezzem suggests they might not want to face the boss fight with their current resources if that is what is ahead and asks if there is any way a wish spell could help secure the room.

Rumpus did arrive. Also several summons were able to be called in the previous fight so it seems whatever is blocking extraplanar travel is a little inconsistent.

Murphy and Kezzem are in favor of a strategic retreat to recover. Pressi, Tali and Nikolai want to press on. Succotash and Pru said they are fine with either option. With moving forward having a slight lead the party advances some.

It seems that the fight against the demons was the final hurdle before reaching the inner sanctum. The next room beyond it seems to be some sort of communal living space. Comfy chairs and couches, a few bookshelves and other forms of entertainment, etc. Murphy’s foresight warns of no danger and the party is able to quickly explore finding all of the comforts of a home in a dozen or so rooms. Kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedrooms, etc. it looks like a nice place to live if you’re a cultist bent on worshiping freeing a dangerous immortal power.

Though the living space doesn’t tip of any internal alarms one room towards the back triggers all of the party’s magical and instinctive warnings. Foresight warns of incredible danger, Kezzem can sense great evil emanating from the other side, and those that can see magic see all the signs that some incredibly powerful ritual is occurring on the other side. It seems that you’ve found your destination - are you ready for the final battle?

Holy Aura

First, each warded creature gains a +4 deflection bonus to AC and a +4 resistance bonus on saves. Unlike protection from evil, this benefit applies against all attacks, not just against attacks by evil creatures.

Second, each warded creature gains spell resistance 25 against evil spells and spells cast by evil creatures.

Third, the abjuration protects the recipient from possession and mental influence, just as protection from evil does.

Finally, if an evil creature succeeds on a melee attack against a creature warded by a holy aura, the offending attacker is blinded (Fortitude save negates, as blindness/deafness, but against holy aura’s save DC).

As they look about the living quarters, Murphy focuses upon the books - titles, magical auras if any (detect magic cantrip). If there seems anything of interest (whether magical or not), he will drop it in a bag. Anything else that may radiate magic aside from books he will note and comment on to the others. [See note with Perception=63 roll below]

"Before we all cast several spells," Murphy prompts, "and everyone rushes the door, have any of you been informed by looking through the living quarters about what we are likely to encounter when we go through that fell passageway?"

"Before we cast any spells of short duration, would any of you want me to try scouting as a small earth elemental? If any can come along, great. Can someone could cast invisibility on me? My huge size version is too big to fit in the available rocky space, but small could work. Hold on a moment, and I'll try locally." He wildshapes into a small 4' tall earth elemental (though he has the power and strength of a medium earth elemental), and takes an explore earthgliding underneath the dwelling place, not yet venturing toward the foreboding spot. If all is well in this area, he will come up, give a telepathic report as his head sticks above the floor, then dive back down to draw nearer the place of anxiety, simply sensing what he can sense (such as from tremorsense out to 60 feet).

He reports back mentally what he discerns. If he can get invisibility from someone, he will then see about earthgliding from off to the left or right - whichever side looks more propitious, up the walls (not directly between the apartment and the ceremonial site, but rather a bit more inward), then up higher, and toward the ceremonial chamber, slowly, carefully, perhaps with just his eyes emerging from a place 50'-70' or so up and 50'-70' or so off to the side. Someone may be watching the doorway, but maybe, perhaps, will not be as likely to focus up and to the left or right. He does this with Stealth 63. Will someone notice an invisible face that slowly emerges from a wall?

Again, he reports anything of signifance to the party mentally.

----------
Notes for just before we enter, but hopefully with additional party interaction to the above before we do what is here mentioned:

This before he earthdives: "If anyone can benefit from barkskin (+5 enhancement bonus on top of any existing natural armor bonus), let me know, and I'll cast it on you," Murphy announces (telepathically, of course). [First to claim the barkskin gets it ... assume done early as preparatory spells are cast, as it lasts 3 hours 20 minutes.]

This, likely, after the scout report comes in:
The clock ticks down... Murphy encourages folks to pace things out timewise for maximum effect and duration.

"Holy aura, Succotash? That should serve as a wonderful blessing."

Succotash casts Holy Aura (20 rounds), and Pru casts Haste (20 rounds), Murphy casts Prayer to cover all party members (duration: 10 rounds)

[OOC: Please, Mr. DM - allow time for responses before assuming we open the passageway. Murphy asked a few questions that deserve answers (from the party, and DM) before we enter the Grand Stage of Imminent Exaltation. Thank you! -Kim]

Succotash observer they have reached their destination and casts Holy Aura
Kezzem hits Rumpus with Endure Elements and Resist Energy (fire) and himself with Divine Favor
Pru casts Haste
Tali asks for a spare resist fire and then starts using a number of rods on herself offering them to the others while using True Seeing on herself.
Pressi casts the requested resist spell as well as using one on herself she also recasts spectral hand and her own true seeing before taking out her rod of thunder and lightning
Nikolai accepts the stone skin and then uses the wand to heal Pressi before moving up to be near his wife. He suggests half of the party should focus on interrupting the ritual while the other half covers the interrupters
Murphy searches the area and asks some questions.

A complete search of the area turns of lots of interest but little of value. The cultists seem to be a well read lot, with a library covering everything from fiction to the history of adventuring groups to religion and philosophy. They have a well stocked kitchen and at least one of them is an excelent cook judging from some of the cookies and breads stocked for the group to snack on.

Though you find most everything needed to live well down here there is a noted lack of personal items and the few sleeping chambers seem more like guest rooms then primary residencies. Either that or the cultists abhor keeping personal belongings of any kind. No magical items of any type are evident. The enemy knew you were coming so possibly removed things of value or things that could be used against them from the area.

From the search several interesting conclusions can be drawn. By counting the number of chairs in various areas you note that there are between 6 and 10 residents - assuming a few are extra or for guests. They also must represent a wide spread of species and cultures as there is furniture for small, medium, large, and huge sized creatures. In addition to being well read they are skilled in a variety of crafts. An alchemy room, forge, magic item crafting, and stoneworking facilities and tools are all present.

Honestly the place reminds the group of their own bases of operations in many ways, being a comfortable place where a group of people long used to working with each other can live and gather. If not for the blood soaked ritual chamber you fought the demons in you wouldn't even guess they were scheming something evil.

Murphy's scouting attempt is somewhat of a bust. While he can go into the earth 5 feet down and explore the current area with no problem as soon as he tries to pass under or around the door he hits some solid barrier preventing it. it extends the entire length so there's no way to move to the side or back of the chamber to approach from another angle. Listing at the door lets him hear the sounds of a ritual underway, and his tremorsense indicates no one is walking around within 60 feet of the door, though perhaps he can feel the soft vibration of the loud chanting.

"Anyone want barkskin? Last call for one person," Murphy says (+5 enhancement to natural armor). "I can cast a bunch of invisibility, if any want it. Lasts for ten minutes, so let me do that before the last minute spells." Unless any object, he'll cast it on each person. If any don't want it, say so.

"Yup, at least I tried," he replies to Succotash. "You mind saying a quick prayer? Not the spell, just an appeal to the heavens for oversight, and succor, and 'Hey, heavenly host, watch this!' I'll talk to Eberyon." He takes a moment, and offers a quick prayer to the power whom he serves.

"You're right, Pru, albeit it is supposed to be a week-long ritual. Since chanting is still going on, we should be getting our toe in the door before completion."

"I feel ya, Kezzem. Metaphorically. But let's go with what we've got. Have fun smiting. If Ketia is involved, remember it doesn't work on her. Though, who knows, perhaps she has gone far enough over to the dark side that it could work. Her drow friend, Sashe, though, is evil, if she's involved, therefore smitable."

"Tali, what is the Cameo that this Mister DeMille gives out? Is he related to Mister Shake Spear?"

As Murphy asked people to hold off on the last-moment spells until he was able to attempt reconnaissance, I'm assuming those will be cast immediately before the party enters.

If the doorway into the next chamber is big enough for large people, or huge, Murphy will offer to enter first. If it's only medium-sized, he will squeeze through after the first people have gone through. He wildshapes back into a huge air elemental.

"I guess I'm ready. Time for last spells countdown." Murphy saves the shortest duration spells for last.

Since two people offered Tali resist energy spells, perhaps she can choose protection from two different types of energy.

He'll enter first, or toward the end, depending upon size of entry.

Succotash complements Murphy on his nice try and says he guesses they only have one option left and who would like to do the honors
Pru suggests if the ritual has already started they don’t have a lot of time to dither
Pressi thanks everyone for the healing, agrees they don’t have much time but still looks around for traps.
Kezzem uses a scroll of resist energy on Tali then remarks he wishes he didn’t use his best spells against the demon but says he still has some smites left.
Murphy offers barkskin and invisibility. He suggests Succotash offers a prayer. He agrees with his wife that they need to get in there since the ritual was supposed to last a week. He tells Kezzem he hears him but they have to work with what they got and reminds him about Ketia. He asks Tali if Demille is like Shakes Spear. He offers to go first through the large door and saves his shortest duration spells right before they go in.
Nikolai remarks he thought the ritual had started a while ago but that they’d sure to be finished if they dilly dally too long. He then activates his ring of invisibility staying close to Pru.
Tali takes Murphy’s line and Murphy complains about it

The party opens the door and find themselves in a small ritual chamber. The ceiling is only 15 feet high and it’s a big cramped for the number of people in it.

As you enter wards and traps activate and an aura of overwhelming evil washes over you.

DC 28 Fort save or take 9 strength damage
DC 28 Will save or get -2 to attack rolls, saving throughs, ability checks, and weapon damage rolls
DC 28 fort save or get -4 to attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks

As the party struggles to resist the magical traps that assault them they get a good look at their enemies who seem to be deep in the middle of some complex ritual and haven’t noticed the party yet. You recognize three of them but the other 4 are strangers.

Scaldsworn towers above the rest, his beard of molten flame casting strange shadows across the room. He wears the armor and weapons of a warrior, a breastplate of mithril and a great two handed sword, yet leads the ritual with the skill and deftness of a powerful spellcaster.

Ketia and Sashe flank the giant, evidently given places of honor at his side for the information they brought him about your group.

A halfling wearing padded armor stands next in the circle. He has red hair, amber eyes with an evil looking scar over his left eye and a very dastardly mustache and a devilish goatee. He almost looks like an evil Kezzem, even subtly radiating evil and death much like a paladin radiates hope and courage.

The next figure is a tall warrior of some sort. Covered head to toe in pale blue plate she is remarkable only in how unremarkable and indistinguishable she is from any other warrior, easily able to pass for, say, a veteran member of the Mailed Fist.

The final figure is A small figure wearing dark cultists robe with a cloak, bracers, belt and headband that stand out. Though humanoid his face resembles that of a tan and white shiba inu doggo. (which would be kinda cute if it wasn’t so evil)

The artifact sits in the middle of the ritual, a chuck of earth seemingly filled with liquid that seeps from it. Half of it glows red with lava, seemingly indicating it’s attunement to Fhorge, but the other half now pulses with water as it is re-attuned to Scald.

True Seeing Highlight to display spoiler: { The figures look slightly transparent to you, indicating that the scene before you is a mere illusion}

We are now in combat. Please place yourself on the map and make your 1st round actions. Map in header.

Some of us have SR, like everyone that has that Holy Aura on them, and Nikolai has SR as class ability.

Spells in effect: Mage Armor, Ring of Invisibility (active), Iridescent Ioun Stone (sustains without air), Ring of Freedom of Movement, Haste, Hero's Feast (+1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and a +4 moral bonus on saving throws against poison and fear effects for 12 hours.)
Hero's Feast HP = 18, {Bless (+1 att, +4 vs fear), Prayer.(+1 att, +1 dmg, +1 saves, +1 skills)}
Holy Aura: +4 deflection bonus to AC and a +4 resistance bonus on saves; spell resistance 25 against evil spells and spells cast by evil creatures; protection vs possession and mental influence; if an evil creature succeeds on a melee attack against a creature warded by a holy aura, the offending attacker is blinded (Fortitude save negates, as blindness/deafness, but against holy aura’s save DC).

Seeing Pru crumble (assuming the Holy Aura SR 25 is fails or is not effective vs these types of spells), Nikolai quickly adds to the Bull's Strength spell by using the Staff of Healing's Lesser Resotration power to bring back some of Pru's strength:

Succotash enters the room casting Divine Power and Righteous Might on Valerie as he does so.
Tali recognizes the folks arranged around the artifact as an illusion and suggests they look for a secret door or something while asking if Murphy or Pressi have passwall. She cautions the others to speak telepathically
Pru falls unconscious
Pressi wishes she had a chance to detect the traps before they went off. She bluffs as she reaches into her bag. She concurs with Tali that the ritual is an illusion and says they need to thinks things out as she only has one shot with her wand of passwall. She looks for other traps. Pressi also casts lesser restoration bringing Pru back from being unconscious
Murphy casts bull’s strength on Pru and then goes to the opposite of where the illusionary ritual is examine the wall

Mezzek’s Fiendish Trex companion bites at Rumpas hitting AC 31, a miss.

The warrior arrives and draws a bow sending an arrow zooming towards Kezzem hitting him for 21 damage

The beastfolk cultist arrives with 5 Erlking skeletons in tow whom fire a volley of arrows at Kezzem, but his agility and armor keeps him safe from the attacks.

The Final Disjunction

Tali, speaking telepathically to her companions, thinks, "Before I die again, I want to try to disrupt this artifact or the rest of them; I wanted to do it last round, but I paused. Fortune favors the brave! thinks Tali as she lets loose another Mage's Disjunction detonating on spot S17. Hopefully, it catches the Artifact as well! 20% chance!"

After casting, Tali rises to just 3 1/2 feet from the ceiling.

Everybody was so enthusiastic about helping Pru that she is now stronger than she normally is. [Nikolai and Pressi each restored 3 strength; Murphy added 4 with the Bull's Strength, so now Pru's strength is 10 instead of 9. Pru is mighty!]

Hey, does anybody know what Foo's Forbiddance does? Pru asks. 'Cause that's what he just cast.

Pru feels the Confusion taking hold, but she makes a heroic effort to resist it, so she is only staggered. [Rolled a 23 Will save; used a Hero point to give it +4]

Since there's a T-Rex in her face, Pru casts defensively. Even with her penalty, she is able to get the spell off.

A Prismatic Wall springs up, blocking Sesha, Ketia, the beastfolk, and the skeletons from the party.

Tali casts Mage’s Disjunction centered on S17. It impacts all of the enemies and Murphy, Kezzem and Rumpus as allies. It also suppresses those auras that were negatively impacting the party

(OOC: Any active spells and spell-like abilities on Murphy, Kezzem, Rumpus or the enemy end and Murphy, Kezzem and Rumpus need to make DC 39 Will saves for each magic item they own or have them be suppressed for 20 minutes as we have done this with the enemy; also any active supernatural effects in the area are suppressed for 20 minutes; since fiendish servant / paladin’s mount are spell like ability we ruled that the T-Rex is sent back, I guess that would mean Rumpus is too?)
Pru throws up a prismatic wall around Sashe, Ketia, the beastfolk cultist and his cadre of skeletons
Kezzem is staggered and makes a single attack on Skaldsworn. Rumpus would have attacked the T-Rex but the T-Rex got sent back by the disjunction
Nikolai goes for a stunning fist and hits, but Scaldsworn doesn’t even seem to notice the stun attempt (made his save). His invisibility purge does not reveal the hidden caster.
Murphy banters some and attacks the dinosaur

Skaldsworn attacks Kezzem 4 times but he only hits twice (60 vs AC; 47 vs AC; 35 damage; 34 damage). He fails his concentration check to keep fool’s forbiddance up (Sadly even with all his bonuses can’t roll a 76)

Mezzek says, “Disjunctions are no fun” and then goes to attack Kezzem with a smite good taking a 5 foot step but he misses on every single attack

The beastfolk cultist casts Cone of Cold on the Prismatic Wall taking out the Red layer, the skeletons just stand there.

Sashe casts Gust of Wind on the Prismatic Wall taking out the Orange layer

Ketia casts a spell then disappears unless you have see invisibility or true-seeing spellcraft DC 23/true seeing/ see invisibility Highlight to display spoiler: {Etherealness}

The warrior unleashes her full attack at Kezzem but the disjunction and her inability to roll higher than 5 means she only hits once for 21 damage.

Pressi easily recognizes the teleportation circle and a number of the spells being thrown. To Tali, "Fool's Forebearance. It's another way to keep people from getting close, this time with a confusion field. Tell me, is being the coward your true nature or just the thing you want to do?"

To Kezzem, "Well, hey, your opposite counterpart is as bad at the jokes as you are. Maybe he lives underwater."

Pressi sees where the fairy fire comes from (Perception 51+true seeing, she should be able to see its nipples).

"Remember, it's Scaldsworn we want, so concentrate all fire on him. They're going to fight defensively and with casting, prepare to match that, keep the rest tied down. And one final thing...."

Pressi runs to Scaldsworn, uses her Lore Keeper Ability on him (Attack roll Nat 20 vs touch AC, Know Roll 36), and uses her feats to spring back to her original position. "Since you know so much about us, how about you tell us a little bit about yourself."

Succotash easily brushes off the Fool's Forbiddance, and is only staggered for last round. (He could only have failed if he rolled a 1, and he rolled a 16)

Valerie makes a heroic effort to avoid the confusion, and is successful, and is only staggered for last round (burned a hero point before the roll, and rolled a total of 32)

Valerie goes into a full round frenzy and attacks Skaldsworn. (Note, Valerie has giant's bane applied to her natural weapons)

Left talon hits AC 53 for 34 damage plus 6 bane, 1 frost, and 6 shock
Right talon nat 1 - miss
Divine Talon hit AC 44 for 34 damage plus 6 bane, 4 frost, and 5 shock

Pru casts defensively. It's a poor effort, but it's good enough for the 6th-level spell she's trying to cast. She casts Chain Lightning with Scaldsworn as the primary target, and Mezzek and the orc warrior as secondary targets. They each take 61 damage, Reflex save for half. The Reflex DC is 23 for Scaldsworn; 21 for the other two.

The Final

Tali casts Wall of Force trying to encapsulate all but one of the enemies into one section + a fly. The wall goes from S21 through to X21 and from X21 through to X17. The wall extends to the ceiling as best it can. {What are the dimensions of the room?}

Tali uses her True-seeing spell (Spellcraft DC 23: Rolled 29) to determine where Ketia went to; Tali tells her friends telepathically, "Ketia is now Ethereal, but I think I got 'em, as I cast Wall of Force to box them in behind the Prismatic Walls."

Murphy is highly irritated at being struck by mage's disjuction. He does not waste time fulminating about it, though. Rather, as a free action he activates haste from boots, then casts chain lightning, focusing the initial lightning bolt on the pesky housefly elf (which is discerns: Perception: 58).

Housefly Elf takes 80 hp electrical damage, or 1/2 that, 40 hp, if he makes a DC 35 Reflex save.
The next set of people it goes after as it forks off will take same damage (80, or 40 w/save), but only need to make a DC 33 Reflex save:
- Scaldsworn
- 'HB' - Mezzek Halfling Bane
- 'W' - Orcish Warrior

=============
The following permanent magic items failed the DC 39 will save, and are dampened for the next 20 minutes. Dampened: Pearl of Power +1, PoP +2, PoP +4, Necklace of Adaptation, Constitution gear, Strength gear (the latter two from the old Iron Giant).

The rest of his stuff saves, and, since a bunch is stored in his magical containers (handy haversack, Bill's Splendid Pant's of Plenty, and the portable hole) which saved... Murphy is lucky. He did lose 17 spell & similar effects, which protected him, and enabled a whole bunch of abilities. [I'm in mourning :-) ]

P.S.: Special appeal: I started writing this post early this morning, but with the mage's disjunction, there was a ton of math I had to do to make a ton of adjustments, page after page, line after line of equipment and spell effects to calculate and write down, plus handling my paying job and new business. I request the right, in this case, despite J-P posting before me, to have Murphy's actions take place before Tali's actions, and get the spell off before she puts up her wall of force. Because it wasn't there this morning when I made my plan to cast it, and I don't have time to figure out something entirely different.]

Kezzem goes for an attack but Scaldsworn is down. He presumably makes sure he stays down (by the numbers you rolled I don’t think you have accounted for the disjuction - if nothing else your haste would be down. Please roll vs Pressi’s disjunction)
Murphy goes for a chain lightning slightly too slow to hit everyone. (decided to flip a coin on it, bad luck).

"Take down this blasted wall of force, Tali!" Murphy says aloud. He no longer is part of the group able to communicate telepathically. "We have to be able to hit them, and you just blocked me from doing so!"

"Kezzem, the housefly behind your left ear is really an elf."

I presume that the chain lightning last round was able to hit the housefly elf and Scaldsworn (even if the latter is down). Murphy had line of sight to Scaldsworn.

Also, with Perception 61, there is a chance that Murphy can discern someone who is invisible if her stealth roll is not high enough to beat his perception. If so, Spellcraft 41 - and Murphy lets people know where Ketia is and what she is doing.

Will have Murphy take action... but I must to race off to work.

"Well, these guys are persistent, I'll give them that much."

Pretty much any choice that Pressi had pretty much ended as Prudence fell. Moving next to her, Pressi reached down to cast heal (for 150 pts).

But with the fight winding down, she figured she could afford a quickened command undead (on the skeleton between the beastfolk and Ketia. (SR roll 35, no save unless the skeleton is intelligent). She orders it to attack Ketia through the anti-life shield.

Succotash casts implosion on Mezzek but the antipaladin makes the save (39 vs DC 31)
Meanwhile Valerie waits
Murphy calls for Tali to take down the wall of force. He also tells Kezzem about the housefly behind his left ear being an elf
Pru takes 200 damage from the finger of death and falls unconscious
Tali drops her wall of force and casts chain lightning on the Halforc and Mezzek. Mezzek makes the save (45) but the half orc doesn’t (16)
Kezzem says that all’s well that ends wall and then attacks the fly druid hitting twice and getting him with the rend. He then uses lay upon hands and heroically restores his holy sword
Pressi casts heal on Pru and would have cast a quickened command undead save for the fact that the indigo portion of the prismatic wall which blocks all spells is separating the cultists on that side of the wall from the party so the spell would do nothing.
Nikolai tries to swat the fly but it easily dodges around his strike.
Murphy opines that Scaldsworn should be made truly dead, but the deed is already done from the lightning and previous attacks. He makes sure he's extra dead.

The beastfolk cultist casts daylight on the wall bringing down the indigo layer.

With the only layer of the prismatic wall rendered useless by the special properties of the cave Sashe advances out from behind the wall and casts a spell targeting Murphy which misses

Ketia leaves her ethereal state and casts Quickened dispel magic on the Faerie Fire so her party healer can stay hidden.

The skeletons fire a volley of missiles targeting Murphy. He gets hit once for 8 damage (vs AC 42)

Mezzek activates another aura

The Half Orc full attacks Kezzem for 127 damage.

The Fly heals his entire team 44 hp then buzzes over towards the skeletons. DC 41 perception to figure out which one he’s hiding behind.

"Ugh. Thanks, Pressi," Pru says. She scrambles to her feet.

Pru dismisses the last pathetic scraps of her Prismatic Wall.

She makes a heroic effort [spend a Hero Point] and uses her Elemental Blast spell-like ability. It has a 20-foot radius, so she can get Sashe, Ketia, the beastfolk, the skeletons, the warrior, and Mezzek. And the stupid fly because Pru does not care which skeleton it is hiding behind. All of them take 84 points of damage, DC 27 Reflex save for half. Any creature that fails its save gains vulnerability to fire until the end of Pru's next turn.

Not wanting to lose that advantage, she casts a quickened Fireball in the same spot. The same targets take 34 points of fire damage, DC 20 Reflex save for half.

Let's figure that last round, as Scaldsworn was already dead-dead, that Murphy spent his time that round doing what he could to strip his body of as much armor and gear as he could, keeping haste in mind toward that effort.

5 points of the 8 damage the skeletons did against him were mitigated by DR5/- - so he took 3 hp last round.

"Thanks for thinking of me, Sashe. Had you not helped kill Tali and Succotash and worked to kill the rest of us in the Iron Giant, and then joined in this ill-advised ascension support group, we might have been friends." He casts finger of death, as that seems to be among the popular spells for this combat. If she makes a DC 37 Fort save, she takes 29 hp of damage. If she fails the save, she takes 200 hp of damage. He adds after the finger of death. "You have enormous talents, drow lady."

He heroically casts flame strike to include Sashe and Ketia. They each take 59 hp of flame/divine damage, Reflex save DC 33 for half damage. "No, Ketia, I did not forget you."

The other one is animated by the beastfolk and under his control so you have to make opposed charisma checks to give orders. Nikolai takes a moment to insure Pru is ok, and that there are no other squirming enemies, then stomps on the fly-not-fly, pressing down real hard.

"The ritual. This was an illusory ritual room. Need to find the real one."

Murphy Halfling Druid (KimMc) AC 40/T31/F31 HP 216/219
Friday August 12th, 2022 2:47:31 AM

The smell of blood and cooked flesh strong in the air, Murphy looks about him as the last foe is being cut to ribbons. All the cultist foes in this room are dead. All his friends are alive. Elation at victory is tempered by sorrow. Why do people walk such paths as these have chosen - to try to unleash so great a power of destruction as the one whom others wisely imprisoned?

Murphy takes a few moments to complete the exercise he began a few rounds earlier. He strips Scaldsworn of the remainder of his gear, places it in a pile. As he does so, he prays aloud. "Thank you, great powers above, for helping to equip us for this fell task. Grant us wisdom for whatever steps we next must take. Selah." Ever somewhat modest, he leaves the giant's loincloth alone.

"Perhaps some of us can continue to gather the gear of the fallen," he suggests to his friends. "I'd be surprised were they to have need of it again."

Then he comes out of wildshape. "Friends, gather here together with me in the center of this room," he asks. "Nikolai is correct. Likely we are seeking a chunk of earth with lava and liquid seeping from it." He recalls the image Sashe prepared for their benefit.

"Before we do that though: Thank you, each one. Everyone did things that made the difference." As he goes through the group, commenting on a few of their contributions, he gives a hug here, a clap on the shoulder there, a grin, or a countenance reflecting appreciation for this group of halflings, and honorary halflings. "Tali, despite you including me - and Kezzem? - in the scope, your casting of mage's disjunction stripped our opponents of so much of their offensive and defensive capabilities. That helped turn the tide. Pru, you did so much, then took a huge hit - I saw you collapse. Press - you brought her back, besides bringing helpful knowledge and filling in so many gaps during the fight. And Pru, hardly missing a beat, did more to bring them down. Nikolai - I don't understand all the monkish things you command, but when I glanced at your face I could tell you laid something of deadly intent on our largest fell foe. Besides that, from now on, you are in charge of ridding our area of houseflies. Succotash - spells and Valerie, an effective combation. And General Kezzem, you met and bested your evil counterpart. Excellent job of trading punchlines. And I never want to get in the way of your blades."

"Good question, Tali. Who needs healing? And then, how do we find the artifact?" Murphy pulls out paper and pens, using inks of appropriate colors, and sketches the item of which he got a very good look from two angles - earth, lava, liquid.

When Talia is almost about to cease her searching, she turns to her companions and starts firing off questions:

"Is there any way to use magic to discover where Scaldsworn teleported from to get here?
Would a Wish
be able to solve that for us?
Is it possible to animate them enough to get that information out of them?
What can we do to track the artifact down?
So, I thought Teleportation was not possible this far into their "Space" but they teleported into this space, so it is possible, yes? If they "beat" us in the fight, they would have teleported back to where the artifact is, yes?
What's the chance that the artifact is inside another "pocket dimension?"

The Beastfolk falls quickly. Now that combat is over and the illusion is gone the party is able to see a door in the back wall that looks much like the stone around it. It was blocked by the illusion and then just unnoticed in the chaos of combat. Looting the corpses prove that Scaldsworn's group was about as well funded as the party, with magic items on par with their own.

Proceeding into the door you find mostly storage rooms. Large amounts of food are stored here and it looks like everything valuable was removed from their rooms to this part of the base once they knew you were coming. You find a room identical to the one you were in with a magic circle of teleportation in it, no doubt where the ambush was planned.

In the back you find the true ritual room. It's a bit fancy, with abstract carvings in the walls and lit braziers providing light. The artifact rests in the middle of the room surrounded by arcane items and ritual materials. It looks exactly like the illusion of it did - a chunk of earth infused with lava on one half, glowing water on the other. A search reveals no traps or other obstacles to your goal.

"Nikolai, and others who thought we should move forward - you were right to choose to press on. Thanks. Wasn't my preference, but I'm glad for that choice."

"So, here we are. There's the artifact. Might this be considered an unhallowed area? Or was it just on the way toward becoming so? Ideas? Suggestions?" Murphy speaks aloud, as he and Kezzem are now out of the mental communication loop with the rest of the group.

He looks at the goods the cultists brought into the back area, casts detect magic just to get a feel for the quantity and perhaps the potency of the various items.

Succotash continues with the detect magic in the ritual room. After getting a feel for which items were magical, and which mundane, he drops the detection. He considers his knowledge of the planes (13) to see if anything pops into his mind on that topic. Then knowledge, religion (21).

Murphy says those who wanted to press on were right and asks what is the next step for the artifact and ritual room and if it is an unhallowed area
Succotash praises Valerie, does some healing and then starts examining things with detect magic. He says he could cast hallow after a rest but he doesn’t know if that is enough to stop the ritual. He examines the instruments used and asks what do they do if Skald shows up.
Tali suggests they interrupt the ritual by moving the artifact, messing up the glyphs, the candles and pretty much everything there. She uses her knowledge of the arcane to try to figure out the best way to interrupt the ritual.

Tali Highlight to display spoiler: {The ritual was one to attune the artifact to Skald. Thus allowing Skald’s influence to expand beyond the Scab and Flood Humble’s Ford and the other areas in their valley with boiling water. The attunement is a long, labor intensive process and ends with the final ritual to break the prison. The appearance of the artifact indicates they only got about halfway done.

Since the ritual is only halfway attuned neither Skald nor Fhorge can take advantage of it. The easiest way to stop the ritual is probably to take the artifact back to the Giant high priest of Fhorge like you said you would thus saving their pocket realm after the artifact is fully attuned to Fhorge again. There should be no danger in just picking up the artifact and carrying it off.

And with that shared, Tali walks over to the Artifact and places it into her Handy Haversack, slinging it over her back and stating she's ready to greater teleport to the entrance to the Fire Giants' pocket realm.

Murphy helped stow a portion of the gear the group found, figuring the party was going to distribute the loot among themselves. "Don't put all eggs in one basket, right?"

As Tali goes to pick up the artifact, Murphy forestalls her. "Let's see what temperature it is at, first, all right?" He places his hands near it, and draws closer, to sense its heat output. If the glowing lava is not likely to burn the hands or inflame a sack, then he gives her the go-ahead. If it is quite hot, though, he says, "We need to figure a way to carry this."

"Rush, rush, rush, Saccotush," Murphy says with a smile, inverting the vowels from his friend's name to make it rhyme. "We need to find Harper. And I want to take maybe 15, 20 minutes to map out this place, and double check nooks and crannies. If that's all right, I'll go ahead. After I check the area, we might want to go back the way we came, and get to the entrance, since that's where Harper disappeared."

He adds, "Once that happens, I suggest this: Prudence, once we are clear of the entrance, would it be all right if you could set up your magnificent mansion? Despite promises made to us, I want us to be fully prepared and spelled-up before we return to the pocket plane. Because not all of the giants may have been made aware of how they are to treat with us. And, who knows, someone may try some tricks. Let us rest, prepare, then teleport. Does that sound reasonable?"

If there are no serious objections to going back the way we came:
Murphy casts his second instance of Foresight, then wildshapes back to a small earth elemental and as quickly as he is able explores that area, checking to see if the usable depth of stone is still about 5' - 10', including in his journey the area above the ceiling. Once done there, he takes out paper and ink, and begins to make a map. If it is acceptible to the rest of the party, he will map from the ritual room, to the living quarters, and through each of the chambers they came. "For our records, and the WLA," he comments. Just in case the obliteration of the statues did not preclude the return of the demons, he suggests the party be prepared. As they go from room to room, he puts away his paper and ink, prepared for surprises, wild shaping as necessary, then takes it out to continue his map. He does not take it out at all as they head back through the water.

If there are serious objections:
Rather than retrace all of their steps, Murphy does as described above only for the ritual room and the living quarters. From memory he should be able to create maps of their pathway, which he will fairly quickly sketch out. And, he will suggest, at minimum, getting - by teleport, if deemed necessary - to the entrance, hoping to figure out from there how to retrieve Harper. "I can plant an oak in this room, and see if I can get some of us out near the entrance. Those of you with the right skillset can try from there to figure out how to get Pressi's cat back." [He does not know that Harper is just waiting there, but rather thinks he got sent to another dimension.] If the party chooses this option, he makes sure an area is clear and uses his feather token to create a full-sized oak. "I can take up to six with me... if this spell works from here."

She wonders whether any of those evil seeking daggers will do anything to her. She did have a few things in the pipeline.

As she assists in the search, she thinks carefully about what the fire giants might do if they ever get the artifact back. "Might those who wish to reverse the ritual benefit by knowing what instruments were used in the making of it?" Murphy asks. He works to memorize what he sees laid out before him.

"Perhaps fireballs may wipe out these instruments which survive the high heat of this area, Nikolai. Is it possible that cold, and hammers, and acid may also help do the trick, with fire to lick up the remaining dust?" He pauses, then adds, "But, if you want to start with fire... we might see how that does, then take what remains for further destructive ministrations.

"Please, though, let me first explore as I suggested, beginning in this room. Oh, and Succotash? Earthquake is a good ingredient as we leave."

Murphy becomes a small tough earth elemental, and circumnavigates the stoney walls, ceiling and floor of the ritual room. His permanent link with Pressi cut off by the mage's disjunction, he will occasionally pop his head out and give updates as to what he is discerning.

Tali explains what she gleaned to the rest of the party. She asks if they want to take anything else with them before she goes to pick up the artifact and put it in her haversack but Murphy stops her
Succotash thanks Tali for her insight and offers to take the rest of the party back to the entrance to the pocket realm with a greater teleport though a normal should suffice since they have been there already.
Murphy helps stow the confiscated gear and forestalls Tali from picking up the item making sure the lava isn’t going to burn hands or set fire to the haversack. Despite looking half lava-ish the lava is perhaps a magical metaphor and doesn’t actually feel hot so Murphy helps Tali put the artifact in her haversack. He then suggests that Succotash is in a hurry and explains he wants to go back the way they came, mapping as they go. After they are out again he wants to find Harper and then have Pru cast a magnificent mansion so they are prepared in case there are any surprises or the word of the giants aren’t any good
Pru says if a Magnificent mansion will work she’s happy to cast one as resting up seems like a good idea
Pressi notes that Kezzem threw something at her husband but lets it go for now. She wonders what the giants might do if they get the artifact back and if they possibly should wiggle out of this one. She also wonders what happens if they head back to find Harper.
Kezzem points out they already stopped the ritual by killing all the ritual people
Nikolai doesn’t want to take any chances and points out that they can’t just leave all the ritual items untouched for the next followers of Scald that comes along to misuse and suggests Pru firebombs the room with some fireballs
Succotash suggests he cast earthquake the next day and agrees with Nikolai on destroying the ritual objects.
Murphy is ready explore.

The party’s discussion about searching the place is interrupted by a deep rumbling and the roar of rushing water. Some might remember a previous knowledge roll revealed this entire cave system should be underwater if not for Scalds power. With the death of his followers it seems the immortal power no longer has a reason to use his limited power to hold the water back. The entire complex will probably be flooded out in less than a minute.

The artifact is hot to the touch on the lava side but seems safe to carry with the fire protection already cast on the party (which also affects your belongings so you can stuff it in a sack if you want).

The effect preventing the party from entering the earth or teleporting deeper into the complex seems to still be in affect, though it shouldn’t prevent you from teleporting out.

Murphy remains behind as Succotash takes several party members, clicks his heels to activate haste, scoops up the ritual devices into a sack and thence into his portable hole, and says to any left behind, "All right, let's skedaddle!" If for some reason both Tali and Pru left with Succotash (unlikely), he makes sure others step aside so he can toss down a feather token to form an oak tree, and takes the remainder with him through the oak using the transport via plants spell to the oak he planted a ways away from the entrance a few hours ago. Otherwise, he joins in with the second group to teleport out.

The party emergers from their teleport spell just outside the cave to reunite with each other and with Harper. Nikolai remains fairly quiet. No one has made any comments about the two that had been with them, then against them. As the repeated adrenaline rushes experienced wane after running so deadly serious a gauntlet, so challenging an obstacle course, and though healed up, Murphy feels a weariness settling over his body. Though he could eat quite a bit were he to let himself, sleep calls out to him louder than food. He is pleased when the mental link between him and Pressi overcomes the dampening of the spell that helped to neutralize so many of their foes' defenses earlier.

"Tonight would be a good night for stories, I'd wager. But friends, perhaps we can let our dreams counsel us this evening, then tell what stories will fit over the morning's fine feast. Before we retire for the evening though, I shall require a hug or handshake from each of you, good and boon companions." And he goes to each member of Humble's Sword, to offer and receive warm embraces. To Tali, he asks, "Can you summon Rayya?"

Nikolai points out that this will only truly put in good terms with the fire giants in the pocket realm and maybe a few outside. But for the most part, fire giants over on the other side of the Wold won't care a flip about what some halflings do over here.
"Just don't assume all fire giants are going to be friendly or civil. If they don't have an allegiance to the fire giants in the pocket realm, then you are just as much dinner to them now as you were to them a week ago."

"No one wants stories this morning, I guess," Murphy states, then sighs. So he writes on a parchment as he shares a wonderful breakfast, and makes a copy of what he wrote for the party's own records.

"Succotash & Nikolai, I hope I have few illusions about the Fire Giants. And you both are right - this would be an agreement with this specific set of their kind, not necessarily binding on all fire giants. Yet they are a lawful people, in their own way. Not particularly good on the whole, yet lawful. I think if we establish a treaty, with some ways of ensuring its maintenance - perhaps an annual ceremony established by law, a small tribute and exchange of gifts - who knows? - and the understanding that by our efforts, their pocket plane will stop deteriorating, and they can continue living their, well, odd ways of life." He shrugs his shoulders. "Nikolai, you seem to have a good head for legalities, as witness your learned discussion on laws relating to the arts and literature. Perhaps you can be thinking about a good framework for a treaty."

Before they leave, Murphy says, quietly. "We are Humble's Sword. We serve the Wold in various ways. Yet we began in Humble's Ford, from which comes our name. Allow me, if you will, a short time to alert the authorities as to what is going on. We've always had an understanding that we will keep them informed. So I've written up a summary of our situation to give to the Mayor, and will stay a few minutes to give him, Constable Rosco Hornblower, and a few other dignitaries and leaders a chance to hear a word from our lips, and answer a quick question or two. If any would like to come with me, you can join me at the oak tree. In about 20 to 25 minutes, I, and whoever joins me, can meet up with the rest of you at the oak tree in the Scab hidden a short walk up the hill to the teleportation dais. From there, to the dais, and on to the pocket plane.

Meanwhile, before I leave for Humble's Ford, perhaps we can cast a few long-lasting group spells to help us once we get to the Fire Giants' realm. Or, we can save the bulk of them until just before we teleport from the dais. Your call on that. With one spell requested - Pru can you cast telepathic bond just before we split up?

"Does that sound agreeable? Any care to join me for this short return to the Ford?" He is happy to take any who agree to join him, up to six, besides himself - though one to three might suffice.

Succotash makes sure everyone was healed before turning in. He enjoys Pru’s hospitality and finds a nice quiet place in the morning to pray and meditate. He prepares his spells and goes to the cave entrance and casts earthquake collapsing the entrance to the underwater cave system. He tells the others he is ready to be done with this adventure and hopes the Fire giants will see halflings as friends not food.
Kezzem remarks he’s for free food except when he’s the food
Tali agrees with Succotash’s sentiment having mediated, relaxed and recovered as well as fueled up on food
Pru dismisses the mansion in the morning and suggests they deliver the artifact and finish the assignment
Pressi nods in agreement
Nikolai rightly points out they would only be on good terms with the fire giants in the pocket realm and any outside who owe their allegiance to the pocket realm considering from what they learned the fire giants of the pocket realm sometimes go on sorties outside the pocket realm.
Murphy wants to report back to the authorities back in town and has no illusions as to the attitudes of fire giants.

Those who head back to town find that everyone is deep into festival preparations still. It takes about a half an hour to even track down anyone who could be considered an authority figure, and the response to the long scroll explaining the situation is for them to shove it under an arm. A verbal explanation just gets, ”What? Giants? Whatever, I’m sure you’ll do what’s best - don’t drop that it’s expensive!”

Unless you want to wait a week no one is going to have the time or interest to read your report. They trust the party to deal with the problem themselves and have important festival set up to do.

The party teleports to the outside entrance of the cave housing the dais that will allow them to enter the pocket realm. Positioned at either side of the entrance are 2 Fire Giant guards. They challenge the party, “Are you Humble’s Sword? If so we were told to escort you through the portal directly to the High Priest of Fhorge unharmed and unmolested”

In Humble's Ford
Murphy, who grew up in Humble's Ford, will not require a whole half hour to find anyone of consequence. Since it seems none came along with him, he can wild shape into an air elemental and travel with due haste then wild shape back for conversation. He knows some of the decor and fuss will be around the two rival inns.

He takes back the one-page (not lengthy scroll) he had written up at breakfast from the anonymous villager. "I suppose you don't care about floods of boiling water washing over the town. I'll give this to someone who cares, and who will lend an ear." He is not interested in causing panic, but will not suffer this fool.

Pirnook's General Store will have folks picking up things. "Pirnook, would you like to have 30 foot waves of boiling water pouring over your building, and the whole town? Thought not. Don't worry - I think we have prevented that. I'm going to post this page outside your door. We'll be back maybe in a day or week from now. If it's missing when we get back, you and I will have a talk." He asks if he knows where the Mayor might be. He leaves with the words, "May you prosper, merchant."

He stops at the Dancing Pig. He himself favors the Belly Buster, but his wife's favorite place will likely be better at getting the word out. He pulls the fellow who runs the place outside, knowing that conversation inside has too much aural competition. "The Dancing Pig's co-owner, Pressi, says hello. And on my wife's behalf, we are asking you to root for us, for Humble's Sword. We are going up against Fire Giants... and may turn them towards long-lasting peace with us. So long as we don't muck it up. So, this week, at least once a day, ask everyone to raise a glass to remember the Sword, and I hope we'll be back soon to raise a glass with you all."

He knows he'll never hear the end of it if he does not stop at the Belly Buster. He reminds them of his family's long patronage to the inn, gives him a quick rundown as he did at the Pig, gives him a pouch with about 25gp, and says, "when the Buster is full in the evening, tell them this round is on Murphy and Humble's Sword. And raise a glass for us. We'll join you when we can."

The temple of Flower and Ffloy (does any other town have a temple made up of devotees of these two so disparate deities? Murphy asks himself) will have high priestess Sarabella there, and perhaps the priest of Ffloy as well. He stops in long enough to give a two-minute report, asks for prayers to Flower on behalf of the party. If a Ffloy representative is about, he asks the same of them to intercede with the Lord of Merchants.

Constable Roscoe is likely to be out and about, for he spends only a bit of his time at the constabulary. If he sees him or the Mayor, he will give that one his other copy of the document. He explains it briefly, and asks for word to be sent to the Sanctuary of Humble's Sword - specifically to Hazel and Alouryn, or to Kendry Leafwin Pipewood, his brother and cohort.
Executive Summary of the 1-Page Document
The entire Crescent Valley was to have been flooded, covered over by boiling, steaming water perhaps dozen of feet deep. A wicked cabal were summoning and freeing the long-imprisoned Power known as Scald. Giants and dwarfs and drow and beastmen and elves of a wicked bent and even a twisted halfling and others had gathered to perform their foul ceremonial ritual.

Humble's Ford would have been washed away, with nearly all to perish.

Humble's Sword interrupted the wicked ritual when it was only half finished, and slew or banished all except one of their opponents, a steamy water elemental.

The adventurers go now to a hidden enclave of Fire Giants, who will work to reverse the ritual. Pray to the heavens that Humble's Sword will have the skill, mettle and wisdom to ensure a long-lasting treaty of peace between those of Crescent Ford and these Fire Giants.
And that we all return in one piece, to celebrate with our brothers and sisters of Humble's Ford.

--Murphy Leafwin Pipewood, co-founder of Humble's Sword

Spells cast and requested before while at the Oak in the Scab, before going to the Cave with the Dais
Murphy gives Pressi an occasional update as to his quick journey through Humble's Ford. Fifteen minutes in, he says, "Probably another 15 minutes before I can leave here. So, half an hour after I left via Oak."

And, 30 minutes after he left, he shows up at the oak. Hopefully, the rest of the group will be there.

"Got the message to Humble's Ford, more or less. Before we walk up to the entrance, let's have at least a few spells going. Prudence, as I asked before leaving for town, can you cast Mental Bond on the group? There are important things going on here, and we don't want to spill beans that don't need to be spilt. With this spell, we can confer privately, and have a united front when dealing with the fire giants.

"Also, Pru, your spell that allows us to survive and thrive in the heated and slowly deteriorating environment of the pocket enclave will be sorely needed. Does it sit will with you to cast those two spells upon us prior to meeting with the giants? The high priest told us he - she? - would have a guard waiting for us. If you please, let us do this before we meet with them."

He also casts his complement of long-lasting spells, such as longstrider, freedom of movement, and others. He asks Pressi and Tali of their spell recommendations.

"I am thinking we will want to ask that a couple of us at a time take to serving as witnesses to the ritual to reverse the work done by the cultists. They may balk at that. But before they know which of us carries the artifact, let us not tell them. Indicate that the oversight will be part of the agreement. If any disagree with this tack, please say so now."

Once all are ready, the druid says, "Shall we climb to the entrance?"

Where they are greeted by the guards, Pru and Tali say what they say, and Murphy mentally reminds the party, "We need not tell our escorts more than they need to know. Who knows whether they were even aware of an artifact until this moment. Let us reserve open communication for the high priest, whom I believe we can trust more fully."

He says aloud to the guards, "Thank you for your escort."

Nikolai is moved by the Humbles Sword's request that he have a hand in writing up a peace agreement with the pocket real Fire Giants. His mind starts racing through the details until he realizes he'd better just wait and see how things turn out.

Once teleported to the entrance of the cave to the pocket realm, Nikolai stays to the back and lets the halflings take over the negotiations. And crosses his fingers and says a prayer.

Murphy is able to find who he’s looking for eventually and pass on his message. The general consensus seems to be they trust Humbles Sword to fix the problem, though a few people get annoyed that Murphy tries to scare them with a problem the group has already prevented.

The party is escorted inside the demiplane by the giant guards. Upon entering one uses some item to communicate your coming to his boss. Murphy will not get on the dais to enter the pocket plane, until and unless we have Telepathic Bond and Planar Adaptation. We already know the environment we are about to enter, and it is important for the party to be able to communicate privately in the presence of others.

Let us be no more hasty than circumstance actually requires. This is not a race. It is a negotiation, with hopes for a treaty. To set proper parameters can take time, and patience, give and take. So let us be smart. To get the full flavor of wine, one ought not glug from the spigot of the wine barrel, but rather pour into a decanter, allow it time to breathe, and serve it with the complementary foods.

During the walk from the dais to the front gate, which will take a bit of time, Murphy wants the party to take time for the group to talk things over telepathically, and develop a strategy.

Let us not be bum rushed into this.

If those two spells are not cast, Murphy will not be on the platform, and asks Tali, who bears the artifact, not to enter on to the dais, either.

Diplomacy starts out fairly good until Kezzem opens his mouth. Through the telepathic link Nikolai literally yells at Kezeem, "THAT DID NOT HELP!"

More calmy he emphasizes that in order for diplomacy to work the best you can't have everyone blurting out their heroics killing giants. You have ONE spokesperson stating the mission accomplished and some of the dangers they faced. If they want to hear more, then fine.

"Fact is, Scaldsworn had quite a mix of cohorts, him being the only Fire Giant. So it would seem that Fire Giants honor Fhorge and Scaldsworn the only rebel. At least he didn't want to include any in his 'inner circle'. So if there are any others swayed by Scaldsworn, maybe the knowledge that Fhoge showed favor to us non-Fire Giants in this quest, maybe they'll reconsider their choice."

Succotash's words were good, and he says so through the mental link.

If they concur with it, then he takes a step forward, and says aloud, "To your request to see the artifact, we can do that. Succotash says they’d be happy to do nothing less than deliver the artifact and be gone. He hashes over some of the past history between the giants and the halflings and stipulates they will no longer threaten Crescent Valley and do what they can to spread the word to other giants outside of the Pocket Realm
Pressi casts her normal buffs and adds planar adaptation. She also observes the giants and casts detect thoughts.
Pru casts Telepathic Bond and suggests that word of their deeds could perhaps persuade some that negotiating rather than fighting has advantages.
Kezzem points out he stabbed the bad giant and admonishes the giants not to be bad giants.
Tali enters the pocket realm since the spells have been cast
Murphy enters the pocket realm as Pressi and Pru casts the spells he detailed he wanted cast before he would go
Nikolai points out diplomacy started out fairly well until Kezzem opened his mouth. He then emphasizes that typically the party has one spokesperson and everyone doesn’t typically give their heroics. He points out that Scald had a variety of minions and the majority of Scald’s minions were non Giants so that could dissuade others from joining Scald’s cause in the future
Murphy requests that the party carry the artifact to it’s resting place and wonders about the ash cloud.

As the party walks they consider the demiplane. The sky of ash clouds seems to be permanent. It is higher up then last you where here, so seems to change depending on the activity of the volcano and the forges, but logically there’s nowhere for the smoke to go so it must be part of the demiplane that doesn’t follow natural rules, likely always existing and merely growing or shrinking depending on how much smoke is being generated.

The party tries to get a read on the various giants. A crowd is starting to form on the ramparts, looking down with interest. A feeling of tension starts to build. The giant priest is too powerful for his thoughts to be easily detected, but feelings and thoughts of uncertainty, excitement, and curiosity are evident both to regular sense motive and the magic used. The giants are anxious at the arrival of outsiders but also curious as to what is going on and hopeful that this may be a good thing since their high priest is calmly talking to them.

After considering the party’s words the priest speaks. ”You ask about assurances and say other things that indicate a lack of trust that you have for us. My response is that if you do not trust us to keep our word then no assurances we could possibly give you will matter. I have extended you more trust than has ever been given to outsiders by my people. At our god’s decree I have entrusted you with the safety of our home, our people, and our most sacred relic. You may dislike my methods and those of my people, but many of my people would in turn decry yours. If we are ever to reach an accord then I must ask that you return the trust I have placed in you with your own trust that I and my people will keep to any bargain struck.”

The high priest continues, “As for that bargain I will make clear what it is we offer in exchange for the return of what is ours. Any treaty we enter with The Crescent Valley would only apply to the Denizens of this Demiplane as you surmised. We do not hold any sway over the tribes of giants that choose to live outside of Fhorge’s Realm. We can of course share anecdotes of your people assuming our encounter with these other giants do not escalate to blows but many Giants do not take little folk seriously. We however do take you seriously and are prepared to recognize your entire party as Friends of Fhorge. This is the highest honor we can bestow upon an outsider and it effectively recognizes you as an honorary member of our Tribe. You have done us a great service and we are prepared to accept your terms of peace between our Tribe and your Crescent Valley if you can accept that we are not responsible for the behavior of Giants who are outsiders to our tribe.”

”Now I ask you; return the artifact. Fullfill our bargain. Until it is back in it’s rightful place there is nothing further to discuss.”

Talk of the artifact sends whispers all through the crowd above. You get the feeling that they are starting to guess what this all means. The various people trying to read the high priest sense no deception from them. They are totally focused on the return of the artifact and firm on their position that they will discuss nothing else until it’s return. You also have no doubt as to his sincerity that he will pretty much bend over backwards to give you any deal you want once it has been returned as long as what you want is within his power to give.

Murphy joins in the telepathic conversation. "First, thank you, Succotash, for asking us all before offering.

"How about this approach? We give them the artifact here, which they may bear through the city. When we arrive at the temple, the high priest will hand over the artifact to you, high priest of Humble's Sword. You would then bear it into the temple, each of us would place our hands up it for a moment, say a word or two, then return it within the temple into the hands of the priest and his assistants. That would demonstrate mutual trust, and also recognize the roles of each - the halflings - and honorable halfling friends," he says as he nods his head in the direction of Pru and Nikolai, "and the fire giants of this realm - trust, and friendship, and a peaceful working together."

"If we do it this way, let me begin, as the crowd has gathered together, by introducing myself as one of the founders of our group, then each of you tell your name, a bit about who you are if you wish, then Succotash makes the proposal as I have laid out, or as we otherwise agree. Thoughts?"

"Okay, gang, let's improvise a bit. I'm good with going along with your general recommendation to turn over the artifact," Murphy communicates mind-to-minds. "Each of you might take a moment to speak, or offer some sort of non-threatening demonstration of good will, then let's have Tali give the item to Succotash, who can then, with a few well chosen words, place the artifact in the hands of Delos, the high priest. Sound good?" the druid asks. If it does sound good, he says, "Let's do this!"

After turning to the halfling group to consider the issue, Murphy turns toward the high priest.
"Delos, High Priest of Fhorge, we have heard your words, and choose to trust you in this. Recovering the artifact stolen from your temple is what we chose to do, costly though the effort was. To return it will be good for you and your people, and, we now know, good for us and our people.

"This day shall mark the day when your people, and our people, different though we are, may live henceforth as Friends.

"Our dauntless companion Tali has borne the artifact hither,"
he says as he points to the beautiful sorceress.

He then sweeps his hand to encompass all members of Humble's Sword. "My companions now will each make a brief comment, then Tali will hand the object to our High Priest Succotash. He will say a few words. And then, so you can restore it to its place, he will pass the artifact, from priest to priest, into your hands, wise Delos, for the benefit of your people, and this place, and the good of the Wold."
Druid Murphy steps back, and motions forward his friends to play their roles in the hand-over.

Mentally, he lets his friends know, "After all have finished speaking, and the item is handed over, let's have a cheer, saying: 'Three Cheers For The Fire Giants, And This Their Land! Hip-hip, hooray, Hip-hip, hooray, Hip-hip, HOORAAAAAY!'"

"Also, let's see about accompanying them back to the temple. Perhaps one of you can suggest that. I have something else to give them, but want to wait until we get there.

Succotash mentally asks his friends what they think. He points out that the high priest seems sincere and the giants are an honorable lot if a little dark and suggests they present the artifact.
Murphy asks the high priest for a moment for their group to confer with each other. He then comes up with an elaborate way of managing the hand off and illustrating the mutual trust between people and who Humble’s Sword is.
Tali telepathically laughs at some of Murphy’s idea and suggest that things like that might be the reason most giants don’t take them seriously. She casts overland flight while waiting and hovers above the ground.
Succotash asks Murphy about the idea of referring to Succotash as the High Priest of Humble’s Sword
Pru suggests the giants are prepared to offer Humble’s Sword an honor known as Fhorge Friend which probably comes with its own ceremony so probably a better idea to let the giants take the lead.
Murphy preposes a compromise.

The high priest narrows his eyes at Murphy’s suggestion but makes no objections. He doesn’t seem to care what happens before he is given the artifact as long as he’s given it. The giants on the wall wait tensely to see what is going to happen.

The giant priest and his entourage do not fall to their knees but look at the it with incredible reverence. The watching giants cheer, though not a long drawn out one that might be expected, rather the short, disciplined shouts of trained warriors from a hundred or more throats made all the louder by their huge size. ”These heroes, known as Humbles Sword, were sent by our god to restore to us what is rightfully ours! They and their people will forevermore be known as Friends of Fhorge. Let it be known throughout the realm that no faithful shall harm them and that any plea for aid from them shall be answered with the full might of Fhorge’s Faithful!”

Another sharp shout echoes from the wall, somehow even louder. Lowering the artifact the giant priest turns back to the party. Their voice again lowers to the relatively soft, high pitch voice surprising from so large a creature. ”We would be honored if you would join us to see the Heart back to it’s resting place. Should you wish a more formal ceremony and treaty be made we will be happy to arrange it, but know that our debt to you will not be forgotten and will be repaid regardless. Also typically becoming Friends of Fhorge entails some tribal paint, an induction ceremony and feast. Let me know if you’d like me to arrange that. With respect to the tribal paint we use magic pigments that only show up when you are here in Fhorge’s Realm and while here the tribal paint bestows enlarge person, resist fire 20 and planar adaptation”

"I can't speak for my friends, but I for one would love to partake in the paint ceremony, and well, halflings aren't known to turn down food. Of course, I will go along with whatever my friends wish to do. I would also very much enjoy watching the Heart returned to its proper place."

Pru is already immune to fire, and being larger wouldn't necessarily be an advantage for her.

But planar adaptation would be nice, and the paint sounds fun, and anyway it would be rude to refuse.

"I'd be honored to accept tribal paint," she says.

Tribal Paint

Tali again curtseys before the high priest saying, " As I can't speak for the rest of my companions, but I would be honored to join you to see the Heart back to its resting place. As for the gifts associated with the title of "Friend of Fhorge"; the tribal paint, an induction ceremony, and a feast, I would be most appreciative, if you would arrange that for us. I'm sure my companions would all agree on that point."

Tali curtseys again before the High Priest and his brethren.

Nikolai accepts the honor of being 'Friend of Fhorge' and bows to the priest. "I will speak highly of you and your kingdom here to my friends of the Mailed Fist so they know of your honorable word and record them in their annals."

Nikolai can't wait to see what paint Pru will get!

As Pressi bows, Murphy joins his wife in the gesture. Some phrases come to mind as he stands before Delos, the attendants, and the throng of giants who witness the transfer. Using his ability to alter self, the druid simply grows to about twice his normal height, which is still relatively small among those surrounding, and, gesturing with his hands, Murphy chants:
"The Heart of the Mountain,
The Heart Restored,
The Heart of New Friendship,
The Force of Fhorge!"
He never really thought he would be leading a cheer for Fhorge, yet the druid feels quite drawn into the moment. He remembers earlier occasions when opponents turned toward friendship. It seems one of the themes that has run through the experiences of this little adventuring group. He recalls the ant people who had invaded the moon of Kerracles.

When things get a little quieter, he adds his voice to those who would enjoy the honor of receiving the paint, going through the ceremony, and sharing in the feast.

He considers whether there might be enough time between now and the feast to arrange for the baking of a huge number of bread surprises from Humble's Ford to share them with the giants.

Via telepathy, he asks all, but addresses Nicolai who had thought to destroy the ritual instruments, whether it might be a good idea to turn them over to the giants. Knowing a bit about how the Scaldians sought to change the artifact may assist them in reversing the course. The group can discuss that option as they travel through the city.

He does look forward to the walk through the city.

Succotash says he can’t speak for his friends but he’d love to partake in the paint ceremony and he points out that halflings aren’t known for turning down free food. He also said he would be happy watching the Heart returned to its proper place.
Kezzem says there is only one thing better than food and that is free food
Pru says she’d be honored to accept the tribal paint.
Pressi says they’d be honored to partake in the ceremonies and the gifts are appreciated.
Tali agrees about seeing the artifact returned to its resting place and that she’d be most appreciative it if was arranged for the gifts associated with the Friends of Fhorge title were arranged.
Nikolai is honored and talks of telling the Mailed Fist about the giants honor.
Murphy says a little chant, grows a little, and mentally discusses options with the group.

The gates are opened the the high priest and his entourage walk into the city with the party. Everyone they pass, from the lowest slave to the most mighty of giants, falls to one knee in respect or awe as the artifact passes them. Now that they don’t have to avoid the giant patrols they can take a more direct path to the temple district. They walk through the mazelike shantytown near the wall, the priest havigating it easily, then through the parade grounds where giants stop their drills and training to pay respect to the artifact only to instantly restart once the party has moved on. Passing through a gate and a corner of the noble district, where an entire family of fire giant nobles falls to a knee, the party makes it back to the temple.

Once inside the party gets to see the temple district when it’s active, instead of when it was quiet. Dozens of shrines and temples to various gods are represented, each with a priest or caretaker. Every god and many immortal powers are represented, but all fall to a knee before the high priest, and all temples pale in comparison to the many that represent Fhorge. From what the party can gage by what they hear (or thoughts they spy on) it seems that worship of other gods are allowed, but only insomuch as the services of other gods can improve the service to Fhorge, IE a priest of Alemi may preach healing and unity in service to keeping Fhorge’s soldiers organized and ready for battle.

Finally the party returns to the main temple, passing through it to the underground area where the artifact is kept. With an actual giant escorting you you don’t have to take the roundabout way Scaldsworn’s notes directed you to avoid all the traps and are able to quickly return to the great room where you fought the hIgh priest before. The priest returns the artifact to a pedestal, and suddenly it’s like a great tension in the air that you didn’t notice before is lessoned as the artifact again starts to support and sustain the demiplane. Lessoned, but not gone; you can sense the tension still, a subtle feeling in the back of your mind. It will likely stay until the artifact is purged of Scald’s influence.

”There. The Heart has finally returned to it’s resting place. We again thank you for your services. You may stay here in the temple until tomorrow when we will be ready for your ritual induction into our tribe. Until then we can discuss whatever written treaty you want and you may explore the city. Take these - they will mark you as friends of Scald so that none will impede you. Your rooms will be ready within the hour”

He gives each of you what to the giants is a small pin, but is about the size of a dinner plate so very large to the smaller creatures. It depicts the mountain erupting and is made of some light metal of exquisite craftsmanship.

Friends of Fhorge

Tali hovers up to receive her dinner plate-sized pin that will allow all giants within the realm to recognize her as a "Friend of Fhorge". "Kinda like a "get out of jail unscathed" card" giggles Tali.

"Friends, I need someone who can come with me. We need to pop over to Humble's Ford, and ask for emergency baking of hundreds of Bread Surprises. I'd say thousands, but that is an unrealistic number on such short order. We then can return to the Ford on the morrow, and bring them to add to tomorrow's feast. We're talking a one-hour round trip. If I tell my mother, she can roust up the women and other bakers in the town to the effort."

A bread surprise consists of bread surrounding something else inside. Sometimes meat, or a vegetable mix, or fruits, or other sweets. Murphy's mother is an excellent baker. Murphy and his younger brother used to sell them at the market, or during fairs.

"Who will join me?" he asks. He has one transport via plants left he can use today, but needs at least one person who can teleport one way.
