(Will Save: 24)
"Oh, you think you're a smart guy faking your image over there. I knew this girl once named Dorthy." Wil begins to explain the story of a girl stuck in a tornado and taken to a new world. "Definitely an air elemental that time," he says at the end of his story.
"Can we find this water demon?"
Wil asks the archon to detect Evil.. and teleport to that location and send a Message back.
Wil summons his second Spiritual Weapon - (to anything that is near and an enemy)

Rolth growls in angry frustration at this clever trickery, and pulls out his last spell level two Anything Potion. he chugs it down, allowing him to See Invisibility. He looks around carefully and if able. will call out the location and direction of movement of our previously hidden foe. Singing Inspire Courage all the while.

(Saves and checks: Will = 29. Perception = 37, Fort = 30, Perception = 37)

Kiwina realizes he's fighting an illusion and hears what may be the real enemy to the southeast when the fiend's spell catches him. Weakened, he turns his attention to the sound of something moving through the water.

Kiwina tries to pinpoint whatever is moving (perception = 26, which might spot a creature that just relies on being invisible and he's already heard) and casts faerie fire. Any creature within 5' of where Kiwina thinks the thing most likely is, is now outlined in a pale glow.

He is able to detect the sound of a voice casting a spell moments before it hits Kiwina. and he sees a slight distortion in the water as the enemy moves...

Tsak fire previously at image of the thing, and his arrows passed through the illusion. He fires blindly toward where he thinks the thing is, missing. (Attacks with ranged weapons take a –2 penalty on attack rolls for every 5 feet of water they pass through.)
Falco casts Shield of Faith on himself.
Mak shouts out that this creature is invisible. He moves and swings blindly, striking nothing but water. (You asked the DC to see past invisibility, but there is no DC to actually see invisibility.) Mak took an action, so he has not yet consumed his potion.
Wil gives instruction to the Archon, but it stays kneeling where it is in supplication to the image. The Cleric summons a Spiritual Weapon to have it attack, but he’s not really sure what to attack.
Rolth drinks a potion that lets him See Invisibility. He calls out a general location of the creature to the north-east of the arch, about 50’ or so from the dias and up a little. (It’s pretty hard to call out a precise location in open water.)
Kiwina casts Faerie Fire, hoping to catch the beast, but he guesses wrong. (I gave you a 1 in 6 chance. In the future, please note where you center such spells, so I can let you know if you guessed correctly.)
Elyas knows the creature moved north from where he cast the yellow ray, but exactly where? I attempts to catch it with Glitterdust, and he gets lucky! There is a large creature that sparkles in the water. (That was close - Elyas succeeded in a 1 in 6 chance.) Then he directs his orca to attack. The orca misses.
Ayotnom movies to the now glittering form.

You hear again that burbling language, and suddenly the creature that was outlined in glitter is no longer there. Did it move? Probably not, you would think you would have seen the glittering form move. Did it somehow remove the glitter and move? Maybe, but Rolth cannot see it. It was there and now it’s not.

Anyway, that illusion of the creature is there and the Hound Archon is still kneeling before it. Ardian lays there, still. The five items on the archway glow a purple hue.

Underwater rules are here.

Tsak puts away his crossbow and draws his sword has his sharp eye scans the area for anything unusual.
Mak drinks an anything potion, granting him the ability to See Invisibility.
Falco looks around and waits for trouble.
Wil moves to the arch and tries to pull off one of the glowing purple keys affixed to the arch. He succeeds (which of the 5 items did he remove?)
Kiwina stabs into the illusory creature by the arch, hoping to hit anything hiding in it. (excellent idea - wish I thought of hiding in there!)
Elyas tries to tell what spell the invisible but glittering creature may have used to vanish. He concludes it was a Dimension Door spell. Elyas casts See Invisible on himself.
Rolth moves to guard Elyas, expecting the fishy abomination to return.
Ayotnom Ayotnom casts Detect Magic and uses his 60 foot magic detecting cone to look for magical auras.

As Wil removes one of the keys from the arch, the whole arch stops glowing purple, but the other four items remain affixed to the arch.

The Hound Archon continues to kneel in some bizarre obeisance, seemingly to the illusory figure Kiwina just stabbed.

Everyone can see that the illusion is a hazy insubstantial image, and can easily see through it. Rolth, Mak and Elyas all note that there is some sort of magical spot with this illusion, perhaps some sort of magical sensor or scrying point. All three can tell that this magical sensor just appeared there - it was not there the round before. (Ayotnom will be able to see this as well on his third round of Detect Magic if that is the area he is scanning. Where is he detecting magic?)

Everyone waits tensely. There is no deep voice speaking within your heads. Just the quiet rush of the ocean in your ears - kinda like listening to a large seashell.

Ayotnom turns his magic detecting cone firstly towards the area where the glittery thing was last spotted. If he doesn't get anything there then starts essentially turning the cone in a search arc till he finds a magical aura in which case he focuses on it to learn more. Mak wonders where the creature went. He reaches out to touch the magical sensor he can see. Just like the illusory creature, his hand passes through this magical sensor as if it wasn’t there. He suggests someone check on The Rose.
Wil removes the Braid from the archway. It no longer has a purple glow. He keeps his Spiritual Weapons close, and casts Shield of Faith on himself.
Falco prepares to cast Dimensional Anchor if the creature reappears.
Elyas worries the creature has been loosed on the Wold. He moves closer to inspect this sensor.
Kiwina worries the creature is around and may seek the keys. He moves.
Rolth moves to the arch and removes the Heart item. The purple glow fades from it as he does. He asks if anyone can dispel the sensor within the illusion.
Ayotnom moves his cone of Detect Magic where the creature was, but gets nothing this round intending to look somewhere else next.
Tsak suggests getting the keys and getting back to the ship.

The illusory creature vanishes from it’s location by the arch. Rolth, Mak and Elyas can still see the invisible sensor where the illusion was.

With the illusory creature gone, the Hound Archon stands. It looks to Wil, shame in it’s eyes. ”I am sorry I failed you. What are your instructions?

Suddenly, the fishy creature appears again, floating in the water about 15’ off the ocean floor. Falco has a readied action, and the green ray of his Dimensional Anchor shoots through the thing. DC 14 Will Save: Highlight to display spoiler: {This is an illusion.}

Thursday August 11th, 2022 12:36:49 AM

Rolth recognizes this image as an illusion, and looks around for an actual threat.
Falco isn’t so sure about the illusion part, but keeps a sharp eye out.
Mak calls out the illusion and looks around for the caster. He looks carefully at Ardian’s body.
Wil instructs the Hound Archon to defend him. The guardian nods silently. Then Wil taunts the seemingly absent fishy foe, daring him to attack.
Elyas confirms the illusion. He looks around for a foe, and he tries to communicate with the orca he summoned. The great beast looks at the mage, but remains vigilant.
Kiwina thinks that perhaps the five items must be worn or used by the same person. He looks and notices that the ghostly tentacles that seems to be poking out of the archway are no longer there.
Ayotnom calls out that illusions are long range spells and the caster could be anywhere. Ayotnom moves to search for the caster, but where? I’m not sure where he goes or where he aims his Detect Magic, but he detects nothing right now ( I assume he aims away from the party and the orca, since those would ping his spell.)
Tsak moves toward the north-west edge of the dais and continues to look in those directions.

Ardian lays where he fell. It is still, and oddly desiccated for being underwater. The body and the clothing shift slightly in the gentle movement of the water here. He looks a bit ghastly, which his eyes open and his mouth drawn back in a slight snarl.

Only three of the five key items are affixed to the archway. They are each sheathed in a purple glow, though the archway itself no longer glows purple.

Without warning, the illusory creature vanishes. On the other side of the dias, a form appears about 20’ off the sea floor. It has the same shape as the large, fishy, tentacled creature you’ve seen. But it’s invisible as you can see from the “bubble” it makes in the water. And it is outlined in a glittering light (Glitterdust.)

It speaks aloud in the water in common, ”Destroy the arch. It no longer serves our purposes.” Elyas, Falco, Wil, Rolth, and the Hound Archon need to make a DC 22 Will Save. If you fail this save, you will attack the arch with a weapon and spell as best you can, seeking to destroy it. (Mass Suggestion)

Then it casts another spell (Quickened Ray of Enfeeblement.) This ray hits the orca and the orca loses 7 point of strength (DC 22 Fortitude Save for half.)

Underwater rules are here.

(I made a mistake. The entity cast Projected Image, so it could not have also cast Suggestion. This means no one failed against the Suggestion Spell, and Rolth’s Hero Point was not used. My apologies - this makes my second error this combat. This would really be a lot easier around a table. *Sigh*)

Tsak is frustrated to see their foe jumping around the area. Still, he stays where he is to guard Falco.
Mak is just frustrated. He moves toward this new threat.
Wil casts a third spiritual weapon to the creature. He also moves one of his existing Spiritual Weapon (SW1) to attack as well. (Wil must expend a move or a standard action to move/redirect an existing spiritual weapon. He may make only one attack in the round he he moves/redirects a SW.) SW3 misses. The ranged attack from SW1 seems to move through the thing with no effect. Without direction, the Hound Archon moves to attack, its greatsword moving though the image.
Falco cast a Detect Magic at the thing. It vanishes when he does so (good job!)
Elyas does not cast his Dimensional Anchor and he does not expend a Hero Point, since Falso made it go away.
Rolth was ready to rush to attack the thing until Falco made it go away.
Kiwina was ready to charge the illuminated outline of the creature, but stops when it vanishes.
Ayotnom was ready to cast a spell, but Falco dispel saves Ayotnom’s spell.

No need to offer a save against the illusion that has vanished. However, speech and spells did originate from the image, so you may conclude this was a Projected Image. Project Image is a powerful spell, but it does have some limitations.

Once again, an image appears as before - an invisible creature that forms a bubble, limed by glitterdust! Once again, it casts a quickened spell at the orca. And once again this ray hits the orca and the orca loses 11 point of strength (DC 22 Fortitude Save for half.)

“Join with me. Resistance is futile, though it does speak well for your kind. All will fall before me eventually, and I am sure you do not wish to share Ardian’s fate. You may begin by destroying the arch. It serves no purpose and it offends me. Gather up those five items - I may find use for them.”

DM Mark - "Looks like a projection."
Monday August 15th, 2022 2:09:12 AM

Mak charges the glowing outline of the creature. He sinks his rapier into it and meets no resistance.
Falco prepares to heal anyone injured.
Elyas warns his friends this is a projection. He mentions line of sight, but thinks to himself about line of effect. (However, the DM will note that you can have line of effect without line of sight.) He casts a web spell between the arch and the dias to cover the magical sensor.
Kiwina charges the glowing outline of the creature, missing twice.
Wil says he will join this creature if it will show him where it is. Wil casts Detect Magic (60’ cone) in the direction of the glowing outline of the creature. The Hound Archon uses his Detect Evil ability in the same area, but detects nothing.
Tsak pays little attention to the glowing outline of the creature and moves across the dias.
Rolth attacks the glowing outline of the creature, and his morningstar passes through it.
Ayotnom moves and uses his Detect Magic 60’ southeast of his position. He does not detect any magic.

Sticky webbing appears underwater, cast by Elyas. It is anchored between the archway and the dias, and also fills the archway. (This will provide cover to the magical sensor, but not total cover.)

The orca attacks the glowing outline of the creature, but misses.

A voice comes from the glowing outline of the creature. ”If you would follow me, attack the archway.”

Then it casts one spell and another quickened spell.

Rolth must make a DC 25 Will Save. If you fail:Highlight to display spoiler: { you are subject to Dominate Monster, you will do your best to destroy the archway.}

Mak must make a DC 22 Will Save. If you fail:Highlight to display spoiler: { you are subject to a Quickened Dominate Person, you will do your best to destroy the archway.}

Rolth, Mak and Kiwina may make attacks of opportunity. If they hit AC 30, they will find their attack does not disrupt the spell and simply passes through the glowing outline of the creature.

DC 19 Will Save to know this is a Projected Image, but you are also free to make some assumptions about weapons passing through it.

Underwater rules are here.

Here is your map.

The orca moves away from the dias, seeking an enemy. it has blindsight 120, but it is likely that the real enemy has moved too far away to be fought now.

Elyas is surprised that his spell didn't stop the sensor. with a 20 foot radius centered on the object it should have been enough to block line of effect, but it didn't work. he will spend this round dismissing the web spell so that he can try to figure out somehting else to do with the thing.

Falco casts Detect Magic, focusing north.
Elyas tries to tell the orca to seek out other enemies, but he lacks the ability to communicate with the creature. He is disappointed his web spell didn’t seem to completely block the invisible sensor. (Web “must be anchored to two or more solid and diametrically opposed points.” He can get a diagonal between the arch and the dias, so I guess it’s partly blocked in some directions?) He dismisses the web and asks for help covering the sensor.
Wil tries to interrupt the Projected Image by disabling a device. He looks around for a device, but cannot see anything that would be a device. (What device do you mean?) His two spiritual weapons stand at the ready.
Rolth fails his save and begins his assault on the arch. Bits of rock drift down in the water as he strikes with his morningstar.
Tsak suggests that Wil throw the device through the archway. (I’m not sure what device.)
Kiwina tries to talk Rolth out of attacking the arch. He moves to interrupt the attacks where he can. (Unsure what action he takes? Disarm? Bull rush?)
Ayotnom moves south, sweeping more area with his Detect Magic, though he finds none there.
(Mak still needs to make a save.)

The orca manages to make his will save against the illusion. It remains vigilant and takes up a guarding position near Elyas as it searches the waters nearby.

A voice comes from the image, ”Few have defied me, and those that did have long since passed to the sands of time. Rule with me over the seas and the land. If you cannot see the opportunity that lies before you, you are indeed blind.”

Elyas must make a DC 18 Fortitude Save. If you fail:Highlight to display spoiler: { you are blinded per the Blindness/Deafness spell.}

Then another image appears about 15’ above the dias. It looks the same as the other, a glowing outline surrounding an invisible “bubble” in the water.

(OOC in my head the 'device' was the sensor thingy, I think that's the thing we are trying to disrupt.)

Tsak is confused. There has been no sign of the tentacled creature, but it seems to be around somewhere. It seems to want the portal destroyed, so that must mean that a) it's on this side of it, and b) it can be sent back. If Tsak was the creature he'd be high-tailing it outta there, so why isn't it? And where is it?

He leaves Wil to deal with the sensor and goes back to guarding Falco. Until they can find something to hit then the mages, with their big brains, are their best weapon.

Mak moved from the projected image to the arch, but the compulsion was only to destroy the arch and not in how quickly that was accomplished. So, while he ran towards the creature, he merely walked to the arch (arriving in the current round) and drew back his sword and struck at the arch.

With his adamantine weapon Mak was likely the worst of them to be doing this as his blade cut large chunks from the stone.

(OOC: Yes, sorry it is the sensor that Wil is after)
Wil is concerned that Mak will destroy the dias while he is within it. He tries to speed up by searching the building for a sensor, switch, or anything to disable. It seems to interrupt his ability to search.
"Can we do something about Mak? I can't concentrate with him trying to destroy this thing?"

There is nothing for the weapons to do so Wil lets them dissipate.

Elyas shrugs off the spell from the enemy caster. (Fort save = 25)

Elyas wants to try something else to disrupt the sensor, but there are too many things happening at once!

Elyas spares a glance at the sensor (still able to see invisible things). how big is the sensor? Elyas tries to remember what he can about scrying spells. could dispel magic affect it? (knowledge arcana = 26)

The immediate threat right now is Mak moving to attack the arch with his adamantine weapon. Elyas casts Protection from evil on his ally. (new save with a +2 morale bonus, cant be affected by further mind control)

DM Mark - "Rolth, you're letting it control you!"
Tuesday August 16th, 2022 5:11:58 PM

(Not that it matters much, since the focus has turned to this second image, but the original image would have vanished - I forgot to edit the map for this. I'll remove it from the map.)

I assume the orca would have used the charge action to attack this new image, which will give him +2, just enough to actually tear into whatever this new image/thing is.

I mention this because sequential actions are hard in this play-by-post environment, and players posting if-this-then-that actions are a pain for the players to constantly do.

I will also say that you have handled a very difficult and elusive opponent pretty well.

"How big is that sensor, and where is it located?" Kiwina asks those who can see the invisible effect. Since Elyas is targeting Mak, Kiwina tries to slow Rolth's attack. His options for doing so aren't good, but he tries to disarm Rolth. But first, he takes an action to convert the lance to a trident and light mace.

(If I'm reading this right, he gets one chance to disarm per normal attack. If I read wrong, just take the first one.) Vs CMD 26 Kiwina rolls 17 with the trident and 26 with the tail lash from his cloak.

Tsak is puzzled that this creature would even stay around here, having been released from some sort of prison. He guards Falco.
Mak dutifully moves to attack the arch, cutting into the thing with his adamantine rapier. (Mak is under a Dominate Person spell and will destroy the archway as quickly as he can.)
Falco calls for someone to stop Mak.
Wil also calls for someone to stop Mak. His Spiritual Weapons dissipate.
Elyas does not need to tell the orca to attack this new image - it instinctively does so when it appears. Elays casts Protection from Evil on Mak, but alas, Mak does not make this new saving throw and continues his attack on the archway.
Rolth attacks the archway with weapon and claw, though Rolth quickly realizes his claws are ineffective against stone. He also knows biting it would probably damage his teeth.
Kiwina asks how big the sensor is (I suppose it would be about 8-10 inches around.) He changes his weapon and tries to disarm Rolth. I believe his attempt with the trident is successful, and since he is Dominated to focus on the arch, I don’t think Rolth would have to make an attack of opportunity in response.
Ayotnom moves west, desperately looking for a source of magic that might indicate the creature creating these images. He detects no magic in this area.

Having been disarmed by Kiwina, Rolth’s morningstar lands in the liontaur’s square and can be picked up this round.

As he acts, Elyas tries to puzzle out what is going on with this sensor. His Knowledge Arcana tells him that such sensors are usually the manifestation of some sort of scrying device or spell. He thinks that casting Dispel Magic may end a spell, or it may temporarily shut down a device. But more importantly, as he looks at this sensor he thinks it’s the sort of sensor associated with a Clairaudience/Clairvoyance spell - and he is familiar with how that spell works.

The orca has 10’ to charge, so the added +2 from the charge allows him to hit the creature. He tears into … something. It’s still a glowing outline surrounding an invisible “bubble” in the water. As the orca moves, it provokes an attack of opportunity. It bites the orca for 16 damage. The orca must make a DC 26 Fortitude save or lose 1 level (-1 to attack, -7 hit points?) The orca must make a second DC 26 Fortitude save, failure means after 3 rounds its skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing it to lose 4 CON.

The creature moves 5’ and attacks. It has a bite, two claws and four tentacles that lash out. The ends of the four tentacles begin to glow.

It bites the orca for 11 damage, causing another DC 26 Fortitude save or lose one more level.

It claws the orca for 9 damage.

It claws Elias for 8 damage. He must make a DC 26 Fortitude save, failure means after 4 rounds his skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

It touches the orca twice with tentacles, inflicting 8 and 7 electricity damage. The orca must make two DC 24 Will saves or be staggered for 1 round each.

Two of it’s tentacles snake though the standing arch to touch Wil 20’ away, inflicting 7 and 6 electricity damage. Wil must make two DC 24 Will saves or be staggered for 1 round each.

The area around this creature is filled with a 30-foot-radius cloud of transparent mucus. Wil, Rolth, Kiwina Elyas and the orca must make a DC 26 Fortitude save or lose the ability to breathe air, and must instead breathe water. (This has no real effect on them now as they are already breathing water.)

In a commanding voice the glowing outline says to Elyas, ”Heed me now mage or your life will be forfeit. Join me and you will be spared!” This has no magical effect - it’s just bossy.

He steps back, vanishing into stone of the dias, popping back up on the far side of the platform.

Tsak rushes up to the creature and attacks, but misses. This provokes an attack from the creature as Tsak moves up. The creature misses Tsak.
Mak damages the arch, as more chips of stone fall at the base of the arch. (Why would Mak be flat footed?)
Falco moves to a new position and yells at Rolth to stop, but takes no other action.
Wil saves against the two attacks, so he is not staggered. He does not save against the mucus in the water, but the only effect this has is that he can only breathe water and not air which has no effect right now. He wants to summon a Spiritual Weapon, but for some reason he does not. (Nothing is preventing Wil from casting this spell, but he may be subject to an attack of opportunity unless he is casting on the defensive, per the Pathfinder rules on spellcasting.)
Elyas realizes he is less effective right next to this monstrosity, and uses Dimensional Steps to move out of its reach.
Kiwina stays focused on Mak. He tries to disarm the man, but does not succeed.
Rolth picks up his morningstar and attacks the archway.
Ayotnom moves in and attack the creature, but misses with his rapier.

The orca continues its attack against the creature. It fails to hit the creature’s AC.

Even though this creature is just a Glitterdusted outline of a bubble in the water, you can tell it’s angry. A deep voice booms in each of your heads, ”This is foolishness! Madness! I offer you all the ability to rule under me. Only two of you obey my commands, and they will be rewarded. What of the rest of you? Will you throw away this golden opportunity? Will you let riches and power slip through your hands like sand?”

The glowing outline almost seems to hesitate, weighing its options. Then it moves 5’ toward the arch and attacks, arms and tentacles lashing at the Petals.

It bites Tsak for 12 damage. The bite sucks some of Tsaks memories in the process - make a DC 24 Fortitude save or lose one level. Tsak must also make a second DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 2 rounds his skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

It claws at Ayotnom twice, hitting once for 12 damage. Make a DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 2 rounds Ayotnom’s skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

Then, in unison four glowing tentacles touch the orca and electricity lances through the killer whale’s body. The orca takes 9, 5, 8, and 9 damage, killing it and the orca disappears.

Mucus Cloud - The creature exudes a 30-foot-radius cloud of transparent slime. All creatures in this area must succeed at a DC 26 Fortitude save each round or lose the ability to breathe air (but gain the ability to breathe water) for 24 hours. Renewed contact with this mucus cloud and failing another save extends the effect for another 24 hours.

Falco is really at a loss for what he can do besides heal. He moves into the mucus cloud, only gagging for a second, and somehow fights off the effect. In a better position he calls on the warper-sar to heal the petals.

Through the voice in his mind and the red fury of his rage, Rolth is dimly aware of Elyas casting a spell. He latches on to the thought that this might save him, and prays for Domi to bring him back to the light. Sure enough, it is like snapping out of a bad dream, as everything suddenly comes into sharp focus and the sinister, slimy voice is locked out of his head. With a furious song of triumph, he moves around to flank the Deep at reach across from Tsak, and makes a lunging swing of his morningstar at the nasty thing.

(I’ll rely on you to keep track of your characters' failed saves and subsequent effects. Also, bear in mind the hero point rules state, “You cannot spend more than 1 hero point during a single round of combat.”)

Mak ignores Kiwina’s attempts to disarm him and continues hacking away at the arch.
Falco channels energy to heal his friends for 14 points, but this also heals the BFD (unless Falco has a way to prevent this.)
Tsak Tsak pushes back on the BFD, trying to intimidate him, though he is unable to do so. He slices the creature for 7 damage.
Elyas casts Protection from Evil on Rolth, giving him another save against being Dominated.
Wil laughs at the creature's mention of madness, considering himself to be an expert in the subject. He summons a Spiritual Weapon. It strikes at the thing but misses. (This creature has Spell Resistance 25. Please roll to see if your Spiritual Weapon can affect this creature. If you fail, that particular Spiritual Weapon cannot affect him.)
Kiwina abandons his attempts to disarm Mak, and instead moves to fight the thing. He casts a spell, but this prompts an Attack of Opportunity from the BFD. The thing lashes out at Kiwina with a claw, damaging the centaur for 7 damage. Kiwina must make a DC 18 Concentration Check to avoid losing the spell. Then he moves up to attack the thing.
Rolth manages to snap out of the Dominate Monster spell he was under. (Bear in mind, this effect is only suspended for now.) He moves to attack the thing, but misses with his attack.
Ayotnom was not hit previously, so he did not need to use a hero point on the save. One image is gone, and three remain. He strikes and misses the creature.

The thing says, ”Sea slug? Do you know what slugs do to Petals?” To that end, it bites Tsak for 13 damage. The bite sucks some of Tsaks memories in the process - make a DC 24 Fortitude save or lose another level. Tsak must also make a second DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 4 rounds his skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

A claw lashes out at Kiwina. It hits for 11 damage. Make a DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 4 rounds Kiwina’s skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

A claw lashes out at Rolth, hitting him 12 damage. Make a DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 2 rounds Rolth’s skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

Then 4 glowing tentacles strike Ayotnom, the first three touch attacks destroy his remaining images. The last one shocks the minotaur for 3 electrical damage. Ayotnom must succeed at a DC 24 Will save or be staggered for 1 round.

Finally, Ayotnom must make a DC 22 Will Save. If you fail:Highlight to display spoiler: {you are subject to a Quickened Dominate Person, you will do your best to destroy the archway.}

Those subject to that CON loss cannot be affected by this loss twice, and please track when you character will have that happen after a failed save.

Everyone within the mucus cloud of the creature must make a DC Fortitude Save each round. Each failure means one day of water breathing, and each subsequent failure means one additional day after this. Please keep track (though it will probably be little more than an inconvenience in the long term.)

Ayotnom heroically tries to resist the will of this Veiled Master, but succombs in the end. He breaks off his attack and moves away from the creature to attack the arch. Ayotnom strikes the arch, but does no accual damage (unless has a way to bypass it, the stone arch has a hardness of 8.)
Mak strikes at the arch, damaging it. He manically encourages the others to join him.
Falco again tells Mak to leave off, that the arch may yet be needed.
Elyas is disheartened to see another of the Petals fall under the Veiled Master’s spell. He begins another summoning spell.
Wil swings at the thing twice, and though those attack would have missed, he is nowhere near the creature. He finds that his Spiritual Weapon is able to affect the thing, though it misses the creature.
Rolth attacks the Veiled Master, doing a fair amount of damage. (Thanks for the reminder about the Mirror Images. So to fix that, let’s assume he did not take 12 damage, is not subject to the CON less and he has one less image.)
Kiwina attacks, and manages to damage the thing with a tail spike.

(To answer Matt’s question, I think the rules for Spiritual Weapon address this. Let me know if not.)

An interesting thing happens to the arch. Was it Mak’s blow? Did Ayotnom help? The three remaining key items stop glowing purple as stone of the arch crumbles where it’s been damaged, causing the rest to fall. As the arch falls apart, a greasy, dark purple substance seems to seep from the stone and dissipate into the surrounding water.

An interesting thing happens with the creature as well. It becomes visible, still covered in Glitterdust. This monstrosity has a long, fish-like body. It has a great maw of sharp teeth, six eyes and six long tentacles—four that end in glowing spheres, and two with what look like hands.

It says to Mak and Ayotnom, ”Well done my servants. Obedience will be rewarded. And disobedience must be punished. Now - kill this tauric abomination, kill the liontaur. The rest of you watch and learn. I may need to leave you soon, but if I do, rest assured that I will be back.”

Mak and Ayotnom are both directed to attack Rolth now that the archway is down. Since it is against Mak’s and Ayotnom’s natures to attack a fellow Petal, you both receive a new saving throw with a +2 bonus.

And since redirecting a Dominated person is a move action, the uses it’s move and standard actions to do this.

Then it directs a quickened Blindness spell at the Kiwina. DC 18 Fortitude save or be blinded.

(OOC Tsak has lost two levels - what would this be affecting in terms of his character sheet? Is he actually rolling back levels and losing spells, skills and abilities or is he losing memories and a sense of self and connection with the petals etc? Or both?)

Mak turned to look at Rolth as the command to attack him resonated through his mind. Yes, Rolth was opinionated, filled with Hubris, and overbearing, but he was also a kind of mentor to the young nobleman. Attacking the liontaur didn't feel right. Mak looked to the visible Deep thing and to Rolth and back again as his mind reasoned out his dilemma.

"I don't think that I will." Mak sad to the Deep fish as he instead pulled out a potion and drank its contents. I'll not be subverted to your will again, Mak thought to himself as he squared himself and took a five foot step closer to the creature.

Monday August 22nd, 2022 11:14:12 AM

What this creature does with it's bite is to actually bestow a Negaive Level.

Negative Level - For each negative level a creature has, it takes a cumulative –1 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, the creature reduces its current and total hit points by 5 for each negative level it possesses. The creature is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. Spellcasters do not lose any prepared spells or slots as a result of negative levels. If a creature’s negative levels equal or exceed its total Hit Dice, it dies.

Oh no, you're not going anywhere... Elyas replies mentally when the creature says it might have to leave soon.

He finishes the summoning spell and another Orca appears right behind the fish monster. it appears ver similar ot the previous orca, bu the spot near its eye is a different shape and slightly larger.

Wil swings at nothing like an idiot till the dias came crashing down. He could imagine all the voices in his head shaking their own heads. This gave him an opportunity to load one of his hand crossbows. He takes a 5 foot step over the mess left by the crumbling dias.
"You should tackle one of the cursed one?" he tells himself.
"That wouldn't work. Then we will have two people out. I don't think it's a good idea." He argued.
"They are going to take out Rolth. I think Wardd has stepped from me. The weapon is not hitting the monster."

Wil fires at the deep with his hand crossbow but it gets lodged in some of the stones of the remains.
"This is exactly why weapons do not work for me," he spat. "I'm running out of offense."

Tsak attacks the Veiled Master, but misses the thing. (I made an post about the Negative Levels.)
Mak finds that his loyalty to his friends is stronger than the compulsion from this thing. He drinks a potion to further strengthen his resolve.
Falco tries casting Silence in the Veiled Master, but does not overcome its spell resistance.
Elyas finishes his summoning spell and calls another orca. The creature attacks but misses. (I’m not aware of any rules that a summoned creature use a hero point for their attack. But at least Elyas still has his hero point.) Elyas is not having any more blipping out, and casts Dimensional Anchor (I rolled Elyas’ spell resistance check and he succeeded against the Veiled Master’s SR.) The creature is covered in a shimmering emerald field.
Wil misses the creature with his hand crossbow, and his Spiritual Weapon misses too.
Rolth hits the thing twice.
Kiwina shakes off the Blindness spell, and attacks several times but misses.
Ayotnom likewise throws off the Veiled Master’s control and hits the thing.

The Veiled Master is now glowing green and still sparkling from the Glitterdust spell.

It seethes, shaking in rage as it speaks. ”It seems you are actually bad servants to turn on your master. Still, you should despair as you are all becoming aquatic creatures and will be left behind as I venture out on land to enslave your peoples. I shall start with the tauric races I think. They are a mockery of other land-dwelling creatures, some god’s mistake - an abomination of animals and humans that should not even exist.”

Again, it attacks.

It starts by touching Rolth with its electrically charged tentacles. Though the first attack would miss Rolth, it hits an image and dispels it. The second tentacle hits an image, ending the last one. Then two more tentacles strike Rolth for 8 and 8 electrical damage and blast his mind with waves of mental energy. Rolth must make two DC 24 Will saves. (A creature touched by one of these tentacles (regardless of whether the touch deals electricity damage) must succeed at a DC 24 Will save or be staggered for 1 round. Additional touches increase the duration of this effect by 1 round. While a creature is staggered in this manner, it must attempt concentration checks to cast spells as if it were experiencing extremely violent motion while casting (DC = 20 + spell level). )

It bites Rolth for 13 damage. The bite sucks some of the liontaur’s memories in the process - make a DC 24 Fortitude save or gain a negative level. Rolth must also make a second DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 4 rounds his skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

Then, it’s two claws rake at Mak. It hits once for 11 damage. Mak must make a DC 26 Fortitude save - failure means after 4 rounds his skin will become slimy, translucent and tender, causing him to lose 4 CON.

Everyone within the mucus cloud of the creature must make a DC Fortitude Save each round. Each failure means one day of water breathing, and each subsequent failure means one additional day after this. Please keep track (though it will probably be little more than an inconvenience in the long term.)[/i]

Veiled Master - AC 30, SR 25 - Damage 68+6+6+10

Mak took a five foot step so that he was flanking the fish monster with Elyas' second orca. As he moved up he choked on the mucus a little more which must have distracted him enough to take that claw attack. He could feel the change coming over his body as he ducked and weaved with a lunge. Mak surprised himself as he scored a hit directly on the things body with his rapier sinking deeply into fishy flesh.

"Says the octopus, lobster, fish thing. A ha! Take that, you slimy abomination!" Mak yelled out triumphantly.

(Attack1=25)

The weakening effects of the creatures attacks are making life really difficult for Tsak. He realises that he needs a critical score just to succeed in hitting it so he decides to perform one vital strike each round. Unfortunately this round he misses. But he didn't get hit again, so that's a win. So is the fact that the magic users seem to have anchored it, and all the Petals seem to be on the same side again. Go team!

DM Mark - "Take that, you slimy abomination!"  d20+30=38 ;
Wednesday August 24th, 2022 2:06:59 AM

Mak moves to hit the thing with a critical hit and a shout of triumph!
Falco tries to cast a curse on the Veiled Master, but the creature seems unaffected.
Elyas begins another summoning spell, while his orca attacks.
Wil casts Aid on Ayotnom. (Wil is Enlarged, right? He would need reach to actually be able to touch Ayhotnom.) The cleric’s Spiritual Weapon attacks but misses.
Rolth pushed through the effects of the creature and hits it for 15 points.
Kiwina manages to hit the thing, in spite of its high AC.
Ayotnom manages to pierce the creature’s defenses for 13 damage.
Tsak misses.

The orca hits the thing for 35 damage.

Oof. This thing looks beat up (it has 8 hit points left.) And desperate. And desperate times call for desperate measures, so it takes a big risk.

”You are nothing, worms. Kneel in despair and contemplate your insignificance!”

Casting on the Defensive, it successfully casts Mass Suggestion. Everyone except Elyas and the orca must make a DC 22 Will save or fall to your knees for an hour. Then it attempts to flee, moving 80’ to the east. (There are now two of them on the map to show where it will be if it survives.)

Anyone that makes their save and threatens the creature may make an attack of opportunity. The Orca is not affected by this language-based spell and may make an attack of opportunity.

Everyone within the mucus cloud of the creature must make a DC Fortitude Save each round. Each failure means one day of water breathing, and each subsequent failure means one additional day after this. Please keep track (though it will probably be little more than an inconvenience in the long term.)[/i]

Rolth feels the power of the Deep wash over his mind, and starts to fall to his knees. But then he hears (or imagines?) the voice of Queen Maab scolding him in his mind, "Now, Rolth, that would not be very heroic, would it?" and feels the nettlesome prick of an acorn cap gouge into his flank. He snaps out of his fugue, and takes an attack of opportunity against the fleeing Deep! His blow strikes home, and he pursues the Deep if necessary (50' move).

(Will save vs Mass Suggestion fails. Maab's Acorn consumed to act as hero point for a reroll on the save. 22= success!)

DM Mark - "Take that, you slimy abomination!"  d20=4 ;
Thursday August 25th, 2022 2:14:07 AM

Rolth remembers his gift of Maab and is ready to use it, but the creature’s command seems to have no effect on him. He strikes at the creature as it tries to flee.
Mak’s rage seems to overcome mental control from the thing. Or maybe it was the Protection from Evil spell. In any case, he too strikes at the fleeing monster.
Elyas is likewise protected. He readies a spell against the Veiled Master should it survive.
Ayotnom is ready to chase the thing if it flees and to even cast a spell on it.
Falco, Wil, Kiwina and Tsak fall to their knees.

Was it the blow from Rolth or Mak that felled the beast? Maybe both. In any case, the great fishy beast falls to the edge of the dias as the electric glow fades from its tentacles, seemingly dead. Or is it? Or is this another feint from this master of illusion and control?

The orca swims around, ready to defend Elyas. You hear clicks from the creature as it uses some kind of sonar to look for hidden foes.

The mucus cloud around the fallen creature begins to dissipate. Falco, Wil, Kiwina and Tsak are suddenly released from the compulsion to kneel in despair.

Those that failed a DCC 26 Fortitude Save from a bite or a claw will find that your skin and flesh has transformed into a clear, slimy membrane, and the new flesh is soft and tender (along with a CON loss.)

Those that failed one or more DC 26 Fortitude saves from the mucus cloud are able to breathe water for a total of one day per failed save, though this is hard to notice while you’re under a Water Breathing spell.

The archway appears to be a pile of stone rubble, as the sea falls quiet.

Mak was there when the monster was slain, so it would have to be really good at faking it if it were still alive. So he stood there for half a moment before his legs gave out under him and he floated to the bottom where the stone platform rested. There he just stared up at the monstrosity they had just defeated.

"Well." Mak started with a fatigued voice. "at the very least we don't have to worry about the Deep any more, though I wonder why it had us destroy the arch. Didn't want to be sent back? Near as I can tell no more can come through either. I do have a feeling it's not done with us just yet." he said looking at the translucent skin of his arm.

Rolth releases his rage and fatigue sets in. He reminds everyone to recover the items that were used to activate the arch and search the area.
Wil is relieved to be released from the Mass Suggestion spell, and wonder how to be released from his other conditions.
Kiwina worries more than just this creature may have been released from the arch. He also worries that his skin condition may progress further. He suggests a return to the Rose after checking things here.
Ayotnom takes no chances and performs a coup de grace to ensure the thing is dead. It does not move or react as he does so.

He touches the tattoos on his wrist and says a brief word of prayer to Domi, providing the benefit of a lesser restoration to our doughty wizard. That done, he asks Mak what he found on Ardian's body, and suggests that going back to Wedding City might be worthwhile to see what else the fellow might have hidden in his lair, after we report back to the authorities as promised. Might even be a reward in that for us!

DM Mark - "Can anyone remove this slimy condition?"
Monday August 29th, 2022 1:40:42 AM

Mak notices the gemstones in the archway. He asks that someone to check on them while he checks Ardien's body. He finds two rings and a necklace.
Falco channels energy to heal everyone for 26 points of damage. Then he moves to Kiwina and casts Lesser Restoration hoping to restore some of his lost CON, however this has no effect on the centaur
Kiwina thanks Falco for his help but notices his skin condition has not changed. He keeps a sharp eye out for trouble.
Elyas looks at his skin condition to try to puzzle out what's going on. He's not sure but he knows there's nothing natural about this, something seems to have been permanently changed.
Wil moves to Arden's body and commends his soul into gargles care.
Rolth uses his tattoo to cast lesser restoration on alias but again it seems to have no effect on the wizard's condition. He suggests that the party returned to Wedding City to report back to the authorities there.
Ayotnom casts Detect magic on the rings and necklace as well as the shiny emeralds in the remains of the gate. He tells the others these are a Ring of Freedom of Movement, A Ring of Protection +4, and a Necklace of Adaptation. The gems and the remains of the arch have some residual magic on them but there are no longer any permanent enchantments.
Tsak agrees with Roth about returning to Wedding City to talk to the officials there and to seek out this apprentice. He worries a bit about his condition.

The party is no longer pressed for time. Removing the gems would ordinarily take some strength and skill checks but since you have the time, with careful work you're able to remove eight rather large emeralds that were incorporated into the stone of the gate. You also find the remaining three keys/items that were used to open the gate.

Elyas has absolutely no idea what is causing the skin condition. he has limited knowledge of medicine, and is drawing a total blank (natural 1 for a 3 on heal)

"I know this is not a natural effect. but i do not have knowledge of what may be causing this. However, if it is an outside affliction cast upon us perhaps some of my spells can help us. I will attempt to do what i can while we are here, and perhaps Falco will have more options for us tomorrow. Can't hurt to try now right?"

Elyas will try his spells on himself first unless someone is eager to volunteer.

First he will try a dispel magic on himself against the skin condition. it does nothing, but there is not enough info to know if it was because of a bad spell (hey look another natural 1) or because it is the wrong thing to attempt...

second, during the time where others are chipping away at the stones and examining the magical items, Elyas uses 10 minutes to cast a break enchantment on himself. and... nothing happens. (natural 4 this time! 4 times as good...)

"OK, well I will prepare more of those spells tomorrow and we can try again... I am having trouble focusing down here for some reason..."

DM Mark - What Now?
Tuesday August 30th, 2022 1:31:33 AM

Mak suggests returning to Ardian’s tower to search the place. He's also worried that the Petals water breathing spell will soon expire. He also thinks it might be wise to approach the Rose with caution since several people look a bit different.
Falco thinks the skin affliction may be some sort of disease, but he is sure that those afflicted will not do well on land.
Elyas Elias tries to remove the condition with the Dipel Magic but this does not work. Then he tries casting Break Enchantment, which does work and even restores his CON.
Wil will heal himself and suggest heading back to the ship. He wonders if it might be best to return with the ship underwater.
Rolth agrees this affliction must be some sort of disease, and he does not think it will simply go away. He also votes for a quick return to the ship.
Kiwina is ready to return to the Rose.
Ayotnom believes the skin affliction is some sort of permanent affliction, and that Cure Disease or Break Enchantment may help. He also thinks that those afflicted may need to stay in the water.
Tsak swims up to the Rose and ready the crew for the changed pedals. He suggests sailing underwater will make it easier for those afflicted.

The Petals finish up their searching and casting spells. They're still not sure what's causing this exactly but they think they may have some answers so they return to the ship to see what they can do.

Upon their return they have Rolth, Kiwina, and Mak lag behind with their slimy, translucent skin and flesh. This was wise because they soon notice the crew is apprehensive about Rolth, Kiwina, and Mak, given that sailors are often just superstitious to begin with. Some are worried they might also catch this disease.

However something more alarming happens when you reach the surface those who were affected with water breathing by the mucus cloud (all but Elyas and Ayotnom?) find that they cannot breathe air, and they're not sure if this affliction is permanent or temporary. Also those afflicted with the skin disease find that time spent out of water quickly becomes very painful, and they must either be submerged or have their skin somehow kept wet.

Ramsey tries to take the ship below the waves but it no longer seems to work - the ship is no longer able to sail beneath water.

You are a couple days out from Wedding City. Three of the petals must stay wet, and I think most of the rest are unable to breathe air at present. What do you do?

DM Mark - Where Now?  d100=90 ; d100=4 ; d100=83 ;
Wednesday August 31st, 2022 1:59:32 AM

Rolth suggests that some of the Petals could be towed behind the ship through the water as it goes.
Mak is not having this. He suggests remaining at anchor here until their problems can be solved either through magic or by hoping some effects will wear off.
Elyas agrees that perhaps dragging people through the water is not the best approach he suggests waiting as well.
Wil climbs aboard and finds he cannot breathe so he gets a bucket of water and periodically plunges head in for a breath. This may work for a few minutes, but soon becomes exhausting.
Falco prefers his opponents to be more straightforward than this Veiled Master proved to be. He also suggests the party wait where they are until spells can be brought to bear to solve these issues.
Kiwina suggests finding a shallow spot where perhaps the pedals could rest, but alas they're in fairly deep water and it would take a day or two of sailing to get to a shallow area.
Ayotnom suggest taking the ship under water.
Tsak reminds the minotaur that the ship seems to have lost its ability to sell beneath the waves. He's fine staying in the water hoping the effect will wear off soon.

The weather has turned a bit stormy and while it causes the boat to rock staying where it is, the bad weather would make being dragged back far worse. The pedals decide to wait this out.

Their decision is rewarded as the following day Elias is able to prepare some Break Enchantment spells and Falco and Wil can cast Remove Disease and Remove Curse spells that seem to work. You find it takes a few days for everyone's water breathing to wear off, so everyone can climb back aboard. Soon, everyone is right as rain. Which is fitting, because it’s raining. Fortunately Ramsey had an empty hold and a full purse, so you find the Rose is well provisioned with food and water for a few weeks. And the food is pretty good too. Good ol’ Ramsey.

Soon the ship is underway and in a couple days it returns under relatively smooth sailing to anchor outside of Wedding City. A longboat approaches the ship asking if they wish to come ashore.

What do you do and where do you go first? Do you seek out the authorities, do you seek out Ardian’s tower, do you look for something else?

Everyone may level up to 11th level. The last encounter with the Veiled Master was rather difficult, and everyone contributed. In addition to the one hero point for leveling up, everyone gets two additional hero points!

Once Mak could safely board the Rose he gave Wil, Elyas, and Falco a sodden hug for the magical aid. Afterwards he spent his time tending to Elmer and drying his clothing and equipment out. He checked with Falco about the fresh water supply before soaking his gear in fresh water to remove the salt, then hung it up to dry in the cargo hold out of the rain. In the meantime he had extra clothes and his chain shirt.

He'd forgotten to remove his rations from his haversack, so those were ruined, otherwise he was satisfied about everything. He also thought to recover his bow since he'd left it aboard with his arrows. Otherwise Mak took time to train with Ayotnom with his rapier. (Mak is Duelist 3 Fighter 8 now)

Once on land, Mak was going to buy extra clothing since he'd likely be going back into those lands where human clothing had to be tailored. He didn't care about tailored clothing as it reminded him of the privilege his family had in Aisildur at the expense of others. He still had a heartseeded relative or two he'd like to kill.

Mak suggested they make their way quietly to Ardian's tower and ransack the place. Once they were satisfied they'd collected what they needed and had it on the Rose, then they could contact the authorities.

Elyas was also going to suggest going back to Ardian's tower. his apprentice needed to know what had happened, and the tower may have further information from Ardian's research or other valuable stuff. Considering Wedding City's general lack of nosey people the Petals could probably hole up in the tower as long as they felt like it

Kiwina agrees with the suggestions so far. Rainard did seem to be keeping tabs on some of Ardian's doings, which might be useful to know -- especially if there is more to do concerning the Deep. And they had agreed to share information with the local government.

(OOC has Tsak's level disadvantage been restored or is there some other spell/special thing required for that?)

Tsak makes his way out of the water once his ability to breathe in it wears off. It was a bit of fun to be a fish for a day, but he's happy to be back on dry deck. Esmerelda has watched him swimming around but didn't make her way into the water to join him. He cooks up a couple of the small fish he caught and shares them with her at the evening meal.

I think we should definitely talk to Rainard. Not sure about ransacking the tower as I guess it belongs to the apprentice now.

DM Mark - Where's Rainard?
Thursday September 1st, 2022 2:11:51 AM

Mak suggests going to Ardian's tower to ransack the place. He would also like to buy some new clothing.
Falco and Elyas agree with returning to Ardian’s tower.
Rolth,Kiwina and Ayotnom will go to Ardian’s tower, but intend to meet with some of the local authorities afterwards.
Wil wants to seek out some training and potions.
Tsak would like to talk to Rainard, Ardian’s assistant. He’s not sure the Petals should ransack the place though.

(For those with negative levels you will need to use a restoration spell to get rid of them.)

You are taken ashore in the longboat and you give the man a few silver. The docks and warehouses are busy, with folk moving here and there. You are greeted with some nods and the usual smells - fish and seaweed, wet wood and stone, wood smoke and the smell of cooking food. You see a few couples with their wedding bonds and veils.

You're asked if you need a guide which you decline, and you make your way up to Arden's Tower. Once there you knock on the door, and are met by Rainard. The crow-like tengu wizard blinks as he looks at you, and a look crosses his face. Was that concern? Hard to tell with the large beak and feathered face of a tengu. ”Where is Ardien. What's happened? Oh please come in, come in, how can I help you? Why are you back without Ardien? Is he in trouble? Did he send you back here?” He takes a step back, apprehension in his voice.

"Wait - something's gone wrong, hasn't it? Have you spoken with the Wedding City officials? Are they on their way?"

The entryway is tidy enough. He will lead you into the larger room, and it remains a tidy mess - books and scrolls are everywhere. The observant will note that there have been some attempts to organize things since you were last here, but it’s all still a jumbled mess.

Mak had to be detoured from no less than 5 taverns by Tsak's gentle nudging as they passed them along the way to Ardian's tower. As he looked back at them longingly the lanky duelist made as if to bolster himself against the insanity that was Rainard.

Diplomacy was needed here so Mak was ready to step up. "What do you know of the Deep?" Mak asked aggressively as he pushed into the room with a hand on his weapon.

Were you apprentice in his objective of bringing back the deep and becoming eternally youthful or just in learning the arcane arts? Be honest with us and it will go better for you. Considering the value Wedding City officials place on knowledge and the fact the local eccentric arcanist died in combat serving the Deep I would argue his collection of knowledge is claimable as spoils of war considering The Deep wanted to enslave everyone and I think we prevented that from happening so I think we have a claim on this arsenal of knowledge. Now if you were just his apprentice then no harm no foul you can't be held responsible for your master's actions but if you were helping him then we certainly have ourselves a pickle."

DM Mark - Where's Rainard?  d20=5 ;
Friday September 2nd, 2022 3:13:00 AM

The crow-like Rainard has invited the Petals into Ardian’s tower.
Mak demands that Rainard tell him what he knows of the Deep, threatening him with violence as he does so.
Falco watches.
Wil watches, thinking he must seek out training and equipment after this.
Kiwina tells Rainard that Ardian is dead, also asking what he knows of the Deep.
Rolth tries to strike a friendlier tone, asking "Why would you expect the Wedding City officials to be coming? What do you think they would want to do here?"
Ayotnom likewise wants to know what Rainard knew about the Deep, possibly giving the man an out if he was not involved.
Tsak asks if Rainard has a Restoration spell handy, and if he and Ardian were close.
Elyas

(As a reminder, this Rainard is someone the Petals rescued from the sea. He was very grateful and appreciative of the Petals at that time.)

Mak stands more than a foot above Rainard, and the little wizard is certainly intimidated.

Fear in his eyes, he says, ”Ardian was seeking some sort of power or thing - that's about all I know. He was studying spells and sigils and rituals related to this thing, and was pretty consumed by this study. He was always pretty secretive. Sometimes I’d hear him talking to himself. All I really know about the Deep is what I heard you folks tell Ardian, but I guess maybe that was the creature he was seeking. I remember him telling you he wanted to help seal it in so I guess that's where he wanted to go. He seemed pleased that you were helping him, I know that."

Then he stammers in a small voice, ”Did, did you kill Ardian? Um, what did he do? I never really liked him anyway, but it was a job and shelter.”

He continues, ”The authorities? Oh, I just wanted to see if they had been notified about Ardian’s death. You see, if they knew he already died they would come and take control of this place and lock it down. They’re kinda jerks about stuff around here. He did have some distant family I think, but he didn’t like them. I suppose they might try to get Ardian’s things to them, but really all the research and secrets here - they’ll probably just pack it all up and cart it away. They never really approved of what he did, but wouldn’t interfere - it’s not their way. But now that he’s gone…who cares about all this now?”

“Do you need to worry about the authorities right now? Not really and not for a while. They don’t come poking around folks’ homes much - it’s not their way. They’re more live and let live. At least until somebody dies anyway. Then they swoop in and take charge. Ayotnom said this stuff is all yours, but good like convincing the authorities of that.

“Things of value? There’s some, I suppose, but he was careful not to keep much money here. Always afraid someone might rob him and didn’t trust the locals to back him up. He also liked to play poor when a relative or acquaintance showed up looking for money. Didn’t really have any friends.

“I suppose you can just take what you want. I mean I can't really stop you, and I don’t care about this stuff. Or about this old musty place. I best pack my things before those authorities take over though. I’m ready to leave Fargunia - they’re weird. In fact, we should all clear outta here before folks in charge find out Ardian’s gone for good.”

The high Sense Motive checks will tell you that the intimidation worked. Rainard is fearful of you, he is being compliant under duress, he does not really like you right now, he is anxious to leave but not in a hurry when he heard the authorities have not yet been notified. Intimidation is useful, but it has a cost.

There are certainly a lot of books, written materials and scrolls and such here. You could spend weeks here and still not go through everything. Does it have value? Probably to the right person. Is it yours to take? I guess that depends on whom you ask.

When Falco mentioned the Zone of Truth spell Mak had no worries, after all what had he to hide? It was Rainard that was hiding something, right? So when Rainard started jabbering as he did the fear in the bird man's eyes affected Mak.

Mak turned away from Rainard, ashamed by his behavior and tried to explain himself. "You see, Ardian betrayed us. He tricked us to into releasing the Deep from it's prison but it deceived him as well. As soon as the Deep was free it turned on Ardian and slew him. Some might call it a just reward, but it's all senseless killing. and then Falco's spell kicked in. "You see some in my family were deceived by Ga'al and convinced being heartseeded would give them the power they desired. What really happened was that the plant creature took over their minds and dominated them much as this Deep sought to dominate others. I tried to stop them but I couldn't, I was too small, too young, to keep them from doing what they thought was best for all. The Deep, like Ga'al, presented itself as a god and I couldn't see that happen again. Had I known that was Ardian's plan I would have tried to stop him, but none of us knew. Rainard, I'm sorry for what I did and I'm certain that if you want to set up someplace else, the Rose and it's crew can take you there. We can give you some money to get started someplace else...No Wil. Once it's known Ardian is dead or missing the government will come in and collect his secrets. We should scour this place for any notes he may have made and burn them. I also think Rainard should get Ardian's personal effects stored here unless they might endanger him. We shouldn't tarry though, we didn't tell the crew the information was secret and one of them might have talked."

Kiwina helps sort out events with Rainard. Unlike Mak, he isn't as worried about the crew giving information away -- they've been here several times before and should be aware of the local peculiarities enough not to invite trouble. At least not until they're drunk.

As for Wil's suggestion, "I don't want a place in Fargunia, Wil. I think we do well with the Rose. But if you want a more permanent location, I'd bet we could find something on Bridge Island."

Kiwina is also not going to get into hassles over Ardian's estate. He doesn't feel that Ardian owed the Petals anything he didn't deliver, nor that he should compensate them for damages, so it passes to his apprentice or his family as far as Kiwina is concerned.

"Rainard, what are the authorities likely to do if we tell them that Ardian died during our fight with the Deep?"

Elyas looks at the stacks of documents around the room.

"we aren't interested in trying to find valuables or take things that don't belong to us, but we do need to know if there is any more info here about the Deep or the cults that followed it. Ardian was obsessed, it goes to reason that he would have a lot of info in here somewhere.

we should spend some time looking through it before we report his death. Most people didn't listen to us about the Deep before, and if this all goes into a locked archive we could lose a lot of valuable information.

Rainard, it looks like some of this has been sorted, I'm guessing by you? Would you be willing to help us look thorugh this stuff? I know you want to go on your way but if you could at least show me the sorting you've done already?
