The Inquisition And The Choice

Dawn is breaking. - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony  d20+6=7 ; d20+10=13 ;
Sunday September 18th, 2022 9:21:01 PM

Asimov hands feeds Elron a stamina capsule giving him a +4 enhancement bonus to Con for 7 minutes.

Irony attempts to slam the demon again but misses (7 vs AC; miss)

==============================================

Zeoll and Bill continue to focus on the Demon. Bill spits at it making it sick while Zeoll tells it a joke making the Demon laugh. (Will save: 13)

Mundhildur hurls a stone at the demon

Honor smites the demon

Elron misses with his Whappin stick

Asimov boosts Elron's Con while Irony also whiffs against the demon.

The twins press the attack against the demon finishing it off

The demon and its minions are dead. No sooner does its lifeless corpse fall to the ground do you all wake up again. This time you are really awake (or are you?)

Unlike last time this time it would appear that nearly everyone in the town has woken up from the curse and they begin to clamor outside as dawn approaches.

Zeoll, Bill and Mundhildur awake on the lawn outside Nin and Kyrie's hut. Irony stands fast near them.

Elron, Honor, The Twins and Asimov awake in the inn. It seems the other occupants of the inn have woken up before the party but it shouldn't take long for them to get outside and join in the commotion.

Edit: Fixing name: Mundhildur (not Munhildur) -Kim]

Mitch - The Twins HP 48/65 AC 29/15/27
Monday September 19th, 2022 6:40:34 AM

The Twins wake up and take several moments to figure out what happened. This seems entirely two easy and they wonder what other trouble will occur.

Mundhildur Karadottir, Jotun singing giant (7'4" or 10'5" as needed) (Kim) AC 19 Touch 13 FF17 HP 47/69

Does Mundhi still feel her wounds from the dream combat, or is she back to full hit points?

She awakens and reaches for another stone to throw. But, there are no visible enemies about, and she is not where she was a moment ago. She gets up, folds her blankets, and looks over to Zeoll. "I had a really strange dream. We were fighting a demon, and several skitterlings. Should we get to town?"

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 30/50]
Monday September 19th, 2022 2:46:31 PM

Honor begins putting her armor back on (for real this time).

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 51/64, DR 2/--
Monday September 19th, 2022 7:37:21 PM

Not only asking if we still feel wounds from the dream -- Elron was poisoned shortly before it ended. Does waking eliminate the need for further saving throws?

"That didn't go right," Elron predicts. "Fightin' demons hardly ever does. Th' last time I encountered a demon, I threw holy water at it t' banish it back to whence it came. Then my fiance hit me an' tol' me to stop treatin' her mother that way. Ex-fiance, that is."

"Shall we go find th' others?"

Zeoll (AC20, HP55) | Bill the Camel (AC20, HP33) | Cayzle

Zeoll laughs at Elron's words. "At least you avoided the Abyss of Marrriage, my frriend," he says consolingly.

Then the liontaur gives Bill a treat and tells him he was a good boy.

"That didn't go right," - DM Hugh | Asimov and Irony  3d4=9 ; 3d4=9 ; 3d4=7 ;
Monday September 19th, 2022 11:42:07 PM

Asimov goes to rejoin the others using his quick repair ability on Irony when he sees his mechanical minion considering somehow the combat of the dream impacted the construct although it normally can't dream.

It takes 3 minutes but Asimov is able to make Irony almost good as new (-2 hp)

=========================

(OOC: Those of you who sustained wounds from the fight are still wounded and Irony was beat up)

The Twins wake up and take several moments to figure out what happened. Since things seem too easy they wonder what other trouble will occur.

Mundhi awakens to find that she was not where she thought she would be and explains to Zeoll what she dreamt.

Honor begins putting on her armor for real this time.

Elron explains that that dream didn't go right and reminesces on the last time he fought a demon which happened to be his ex mother-in-law.

Zeoll congratulates Elron on avoiding the Abyss of Marriage and gives Bill a treat telling him he was a good boy.

The party reunites again. However, the moment is short live because it isn't long before the Inquisitors have gathered together.

One of the inquisitors has secured a handbell and starts ringing it incessantly to get everyone's attention.

After everyone quiets down, the bell ringer a sort of hunchbacked red haired man stops ringing and the hooked nose grand inquisitor (remember him) clears his throat and then says, "Hear Ye! Hear Ye. Just as my name is Grand Inquisitor Frollo so too have we discovered the cause of the troubles of Aeschlepios. It would appear that a curse has been laid here by the hand of the local witch and her evil cult. This curse is especially heinous, dark and evil in that it forces many especially children to sleep and never wake up. Therefore due to the curse and the fact that the witch weighs as much as a duck and is thusly made of wood per the Belvedere corollary on witches and burning we are left with no choice but to burn her at the stake. Doing as we prescribe immediately will purge the town's corruption via Infiernos's holy flame. Praise be unto Lord Infiernos and His infinite wisdom and mercy for His cleansing fire shall see to it that this village is restored. Now let's enact His will and BURN THE WITCH!"

The town is in an uproarious agreement at the decision to BURN THE WITCH and it isn't long before you are all swept up in the crowd which quickly gathered pitchforks and torches as they head to Nin Gikuga's hut.

Nin Gikuga is outside her hut and she sees the crowd coming and she looks at her hut and realizes how insignificant it looks against the sea of people and at first she lowers her head in resignation but then her gaze rests upon her daughter Kyria and she raises her head defiantly and in a tone of contempt and hatred says, "GO AWAY and leave me and my daughter in peace!"

Kyria quickly steps in front of her mother and says, "Please, I beg you. Don't hurt my mother. I love her and she loves me. She hasn't done anything save to exist and be different"

It is at this time that you realize that while a few of the inquisitors look like your typical clerics and holy men the majority (roughly a little over half a dozen) look like they could be guards or soldiers. These rough cut men begin slowly advancing towards Kyria and her mother while the 3 or 4 clerical types (the grand inquisitor and hunchback included) hang back.

What do you do?

Mundhildur Karadottir, Jotun singing giant (7'4" or 10'5" as needed) (Kim) AC 19 Touch 13 FF17 HP 47/69  d20+9=21 ; d20+9=16 ; 2d6+4=16 ; 2d6+4=10 ; d20+6=18 ;

"WAIT!" shouts Mundhildur, growing to full height, and striding ahead as the mob approaches the hut of Kyria and her mother. She looks at the grand inquisitor as he and the hunchbacked man hang back. She pulls a stone and hurls it into the earth, kicking up dirt and making a shockwave of five feet or so, and takes a step forward to straddle the stone.

"You rush to judgment based upon the seemingly weighty evidence of supposedly wise men. I wonder how Grand Inquisitor Frollo's weight would compare to a drake? Having now listened to his quackings, is it now time to follow him now like obedient ducklings?

"You are not ducklings. You are people. And guess what? We - my friends and I - just fought and defeated the cause of this sleeping sickness. Look around you - Are there any here now who until recently were stuck in slumber? Before you attack a woman who is NOT the cause of this matter, go and check on your children. Do they now still sleep?

"Show some sense. Show that you can be wise, and not foolishly follow the brainlessness of a mob. Pitchforks? Use them for hay! Torches? Use them for light, for suitable warmth - not to kill another because you find her strange."

She draws her longspear from her quiver and spins it in the air, then slams the butt on the ground. She looks at one of the rough-cut men. "Try us if you wish. Others have, and are dead, or imprisoned, or have repented.

"Do let us examine the woman. But a fair trial, with clear evidence is what justice calls for. Not dunking someone in water to see if they are a person or a waterfowl.

"Be WISE. Stand DOWN. Let LAW, and TRUTH prevail. And learn whether the curse is lifted, or not."

"We say: THE CURSE IS LIFTED. The Curse Is Lifted - Now prove me wrong, or lay DOWN your pitchforks. WHO IS AWAKE WHO SLEPT??? Go and see, or just look about you! The curse is lifted."

She is ready to slam any of the thugs who make a move toward mother and daughter. Readied attack AC 21, 16 hp, AC 16, 10 hp. Only if needed. Intimidate 18.

She hopes that Zeoll's tongue may add to persuasive efforts, and Honor, Elron, Asimov, Irony under his direction, and the Twins add to the effort to avoid a fight, and dissuade most.

The Twins are tempted to shoot the inquisitor as soon as he opens his mouth but that would probably not help.

Bill the camel spits on Frollo. Maybe he is surprised and loses his dex bonus to AC? The camel hits touch AC 25. That sickens the fellow and inflicts a -2 on saves, etc for 3 rounds.

Zeoll grimaces and apologizes. "Sorrry, you know camels, they spit sometimes. Apologies."

"But you should listen to my big frriend. Aided by your prrayers, we defeated the demon in a drream, and the dangerr is overr. This lady is innocent. I strrongly SUGGEST that you rrevoke yourr judgement and leave this town in peace."

That's a suggestion spell, Will Save DC20.

Honor Bright (Kathy) [AC 20; HP 30/50]  d20+13=14 ; d20+13=15 ;
Tuesday September 20th, 2022 3:20:58 PM

Honor takes advantage of the quiet that followed Mundhildur's shout, speaking in a normal tone with a steady voice, hoping to calm the general atmosphere.

"Mistress Gikuga isn't going anywhere; there is plenty of time to do justice on her if that is what is required. Make sure it is required. Check on those who once slept and see if the curse is lifted. And let us have more information from the inquisitors, because I confess I could not follow the arguments about ducks and wood. Let us take our time and be sure we're right."

[Diplomacy 15. Use a Hero Point to reroll the 1 and got a 2. I want my Hero Point back, darn it.]

SteveM - Elron | AC 23 (21 if raging), HP 51/64, DR 2/--
Tuesday September 20th, 2022 6:56:10 PM

Sadly, Elron decides that this is a time to put the whappin' stick away. The time for fighting preachers and guards is after words have failed, not before.

"Just list-- I say, listen! Didn't we hear on our way over even now that folks are wakin' up?" Elron adds to the points his friends are making. "Besides which, th' Bedivere corollary holds that witches only burn 'cause they're made of wood, an' that there are better ways of determinin' if they're wood than burnin' 'em." Elron looks over at Nin Gikuga -- could that be a false nose?

Zeoll pauses to sense if his suggestion spell took.
