“What did you say your mother’s name was?"

"I didn't." The reply is friendly, but Myre's eyes are darting around looking at the mob of people around her, people she was caged in with. She takes a moment to calm herself, then smiles up at Nintos. "That's a campfire question, not a middle of a crowd question." That seems to be all she has to say on the matter right now.

She is super glad to be out of that cage and that she can exit first. Her anxiety drains away as the crowd does.

She respectfully leaves the grandmother and her grandkids alone. She's scared enough children today already. She is definitely in higher spirits now that she can walk on solid ground with just her friends around. That is, until she sees there's another lift. She takes some deep, calming breaths. "Shouldn't be as crowded as the last one, right? It'll be fine!"

She picks up the pace a little, wanting very much to get it over with. "Come on, slowpokes! I'm not gonna spend all night dreading another lift voyage!"

Rhys admires the large statue and domed roofs of White Hawk, and is even more taken by the endless rows of the vineyards and orchards they pass along the way. ”An elf could get fat foraging around here. I don’t suppose their are any roadside markets along the way?”. If the opportunity presents itself Rhys will purchase a basket of fruit along the way, pears if they are season.

The normally always hungry 18 year old cleric doesn’t have much of an appetite subsequent to learning there is another magical lift pending.

Paige seeks out Myre and asks ”you all right? “ then breathlessly addis ”did you see the person tumbling through the Falls? Just before reaching the misty part, she disappeared with a ‘pop’! One of the guards saw it too! But, he didn’t do a thing! Acted like it was a normal occurrence!” The half elf just shakes her head in bewilderment as she follows the cart along the road to the next lift.

Another lift? Of course there was another, but Zarsellet hadn't really thought about it on the ride down. Could they get past this one before night fall?

He tried to sound happy.... "Right! Let's get the next lift ride done!" Hearing Paige mention something about a person tumbling in the falls he shakes his head. "Maybe on the way back someone can ask a guard about it? Maybe it's an illusion that somebody created. Doesn't sound like entertainment though. Too many people fear falling!"

Myre doesn't wish to talk about her mother in a group. Everyone respects her privacy and is willing to wait. She spurs the party on to greater speed and the wagon creaks a bit as they continue on the safe road.

Rhys likes the look of White Hawk and it is a well kept up city trimmed out in white. Rhys spots some fruit pickers and is able to obtain some free apricots and a couple of bottles of wine from a stand on the other side of the road.

Paige brings up the falling female on the Endless Falls to Myre and asks her about it.

Zarsellet hears the talk about the woman "falling through the falls" and remarks upon it.

At times, the Safe Road gets relatively close to the edge of the 2nd plateau cliff and you can look down onto the 1st plateau. It then suddenly hits some of our heroes that there are three stacked plateaus and they are on the 2nd one.

The day passes quickly, but tired muscles and weariness set in as they pass the turnoff for Tumblevoid and they see the "upper castle" for South Dangdrum in the distance. You hear a voice shout. "Get a move on folks. We're holding it for ya. You don't want to descend in the dark do ya?"

No town on the road as Tumblevoid is now off to your north (right). But the castle is still a welcome sight. The last boxes and crates are being loaded for the descent and for some reason, once again, you're on the inner side of the lift. This lift is not magical. It is physically being lowered by four sets of large horses as they move around in circles from the spindle gizmo they are attached to.

In the distance you see a storm approaching from the west and distant lightning as the light of day dims. Boy you can see a long way. In fact form the edge you can not only see the 1st plateau below, but look across it to see the last cliff to the west and a town perched on its edge.

As soon as you are aboard and "locked down," the guards come on board and see that all the animals are secured so that can't move around too much. As the lift begins to move, it lists a bit as the horses on one side seem to start a bit faster. You hear a "Woah Boy!" as things become level again. Looking up at the workers peering down at you, they all scream at that pivotal moment, break up laughing and start cleaning up for the day. You hear one in the distance, "That was a good one. Did you see the look on that adventurer's face?"

Sure enough, it becomes dark before you hit bottom and you can see the moon of Wardd rising over the top of the 3rd plateau, which you can see in the distance lit up by the moon. An amazing site. Soon; however, the dark clouds block the moon as the storm blows over the top. You get hit by some slicing rain, but the cliffs and circling wind keep most of it off of you. This lift seems to descend a bit faster, And you are landing within a couple of hours according to your "inner clocks."

The "castle below" is well lit as you land with lanterns, magical torches, etc. The town of South Dangstrom is a welcome site and there does seem to be more inns in this village than would normally be in a town of this size.

You may get a room in an "adventurer's suite" in the White Cliff Inn for 20gp or set up camp just outside of town. The suite has 3 rooms with a central area and multiple beds in each room. The kitchen delivers some food to your suite as they are cleaning up for the night and wish you a good sleep. The campground is clean and several groups are bedding down in the area with fires going and the smells of food.

Kwarsk contemplates, then speaks to his friends, " Perhaps we should get the adventurer's suite? After all that open-air travel, I think I'd like to have some solid walls around me for the night... and how about those lifts, eh? Imagine the engineering that must have gone into them!"

Myre listens to Paige's story about the jumper. "Do you think they 'popped' somewhere safe? Surely the guards and other citizens wouldn't all blow of a suicide, right? I'd have to rethink living in the city if they were!"

She doesn't enjoy the second trip down a cliff, but once the sun goes down and the stars come out, her spirits immediately lift. She finds a safe space to lie down on her back, preferably on the cart if it's feasible. She hums a happy tune to herself while she holds Waddles out at arm's length above her. She makes little 'vroom' sounds as she pretends he's flying around up there. It's weird, but she seems to enjoy herself very much. She's actually a little disappointed when they hit ground.

Looking between the soft beds and hot cooked meals versus an empty patch of dirt, she decides there's no question about which is better.

"So, we're camping, right? I can't be the only one tired of sleeping with a roof over my head!" She smiles expectantly, her face betraying her excitement at the prospect.

Zarsellet barely glances at the outdoor camp before moving along with Kwarsk. "We're likely to be camping plenty soon. An inn. Proper beds. And breakfast? Much better!"

Rhys consumes one of the apricots as the lift descends and offers the others to his fellow adventurers. The wine he saves for later. On reaching the bottom, Rhys moves off with Kwarsk and Zarsellet towards the inn. ”I wouldn’t mind a warm meat pie to go along with this wine. There will be plenty of time for cold meals and cold bedrolls over the next few weeks I dare say.”

Zarsellet hears Rhys echoing his thoughts and groans. "Cold meals and cold bedrolls.... When does the life of an adventurer get better? Of all the stories and songs that I know, none of them mention cold meals and cold bedrolls! Maybe I'll have to add a line or two to the record of this quest?"

"Does anyone know how to cook? I think I'd burn water if I tried...."

Nintos whistles for Merletta to return as they turn their attention back to the trail. Scratching the crook of her neck; “I am sure there is a need for such a sign…” even if we didn’t see any he trails off into his own thoughts.

Walking into the White Cliff Inn, Nintos takes in his surroundings and turns to the group; “I agree that we should get one last stay in a room and a homecooked meal before setting off into the wilderness. Who knows that those beds and meals will be like.”

Thinking to himself he begins to look through his backpack and looks towards the help; “Any chance I could get some spiced tea? Oh also, where is the closest place I could purchase trail rations? It seems I did not purchase any before setting out.”

Looking towards Myre; “I suppose the warm fire in a hearth is not the same as a campfire?” He says with a smile.

Myre shows no signs of disappointment that she's out-voted. Her friends are right: they'll have plenty nights under the stars over the next few days. She smiles and accompanies her friends into the suite.

She looks out the window at the pouring rain, then up at the clouds covering the night sky. "Ok, good call on the suite." She frowns a bit as she continues looking at the clouds, then shakes it off and rejoins her friends.

Paige blanches when the guards operating the lift scream, then overhearing their laughter figures she’s ‘that adventurer’ and turns away to peep over the edge of the cage as the group makes their second descent of the day. She sniffs the rich scent of the apricot Rhys gives her but stows it for later.

Our heroes spend the night in a nice warm suite in a nice warm bed with nice warm klah brought to the room with sweet rolls the next morning. Wanting to get an early start, they head out quickly.

The group heads west out of South Dangstrom and again, there's a road sign:

"Fast Road starts here."
"Watch your step."

You see just a glimmer of blue magic at a line that crosses the road. As you take your first step, the road increases speed. You can walk to go faster, or run for that matter. Or you can just stand. One can step off the road to the side to stop. The road in a standing position moves about 5 mph.

Faster than you think, you arrive at the edge of the 1st plateau and the town of Troicmoret. The lift castle looks similar to all the others. The lift is waiting. The person in charge, a gnome woman, kinda plump with a high soprano pitched voice says, "Ahh, we were wondering when the first ones would come. You are the first to arrive! We'll wait about 15 min until our usual scheduled departing time and then you'll be off! Welcome to Troicmoret. You'll be landing in Golpherand below in a couple of hours. Where ya headed, adventurerers? Well I assume you're adventurers by your various styles of clothing etc."

She seems to like to talk and talk somewhat fast.

"You shouldn't be able to see it from here, but in case you didn't know, to the northwest is Idol City and you know what that means!"

(I won't even have you make a check. You know this information.)

Everyone nods as you know about the Teucri statue on the face of the cliff you're descending just east of Idol City and that if you look at it, you "could" be turned to stone. "It's just possible to catch a glance of the statue if the wind blows you out a bit from the cliff and you lean out to look. So don't. We haven't had a statue on this lift for over 50 years and we really don't want to have to summon a mage to reverse the effects (that you'd have to pay for) this fine day."

No one else arrives so you are alone on the lift. They place the wagon in the center and stack some crates and packages near each corner to keep the load stable. Oxen are doing the lowering and lifting work. And you are off. It feels a bit weird to be the only ones on the lift. The storm has passed by during the night and the morning smells of fresh rain.

You arrive at the bottom, and experience a bit of dizziness from the "swaying" of this cliff raft when the swaying stops. It also feels a bit strange to "not" be on a plateau.

Our heroes travel northwest on the road to Idol City. About half way there, you find a guardpost and they issue an assortment of hats and helmets to the group that block the ability to accidentally glance towards the cliff wall and are given the same monotone instructions that everyone gets. You may choose the style of your "hat" from the many there.

"Of course, the guard finishes, we can't keep you from turning your head. So please just don't. Talk without looking at each other to the right or to the left. If you let your self look to the left, you'll probably look to the right without thinking. Safer to just look down the road. You'll arrive in Idol City in about an hour."

As you approach town, you see "statues" of people that have been turned to stone lining the edges of the road every 50' or so as a reminder to "not look."

When you arrive in Idol City, which is really a small town, you see huge walls of stone and wood on the east side of town that keeps one from accidentally looking at the cliff. You also see the "striders" who are very weird folk who are so paranoid from years of living here that they walk down the street sideways facing west, refusing to take a chance. Obviously they date from before the days when there was a wall there for safety.

Idol City also sits on the coast so it is a beautiful spot, marred only by this giant stone and wood wall to the east. The road west curves along the shore and you enjoy the sound of the surf hitting the rocks. Madvow is the next down which you hit by mid-afternoon and then you cross the first branch of East Peaseblossom River and head for Sheuvan, where you spend the night in a campground as the inn is full.

A fort is in Sheuvan protecting the western border of New Elenna from the denizens of Izen. You've arrived. :)

Paige is curious about this ‘idol’ that turns folks to stone, but remembering her experience with the drow sleep poison, she decides not to test any theories! ”I wonder why no one has tried to rid the cliff side of this inconvenience, or hide it behind a magical veil? Maybe a quest for another day?” she suggests, as she accepts a bonnet that shields the sides and top of her face from view, and ties a jaunty bow under her right ear, and makes to follow the instructions of the guards.

Rhys wakes in the morning and sets about making sure that everything is secure in the wagon and ready for travel. His personal belongings are in order and he awaits the decision of the group on their departure. ”While I am no match for the skills of our now departed ranger, I am not unaccustomed to travel through the wilds. If you wish I will scout ahead for the best path and for any danger.”.

Zarsellet feels tempted to sleep in.... but only in the way of someone excited about the coming day. The bed feels great and he is fully rested. He enjoys a large breakfast meal before joining the group.

As they get to the lift and get warned about Idol City and the Teucri statue he grins. Everybody "knew" about it, but what did they really know? It turned everybody that looked at it to stone? Sure! And there were probably any number of statues ahead to prove it! He did look forward to seeing the statues, but whether he fully believed the story or not.... he wouldn't peek!

Once various head coverings are offered he looks for the most garishly colored thing that is at least close to fitting. If he has to he casts Prestidigitation and adds some bright red and orange stripes to keep it interesting!

Having never been to Idol City before he wanders with the group, looking everywhere at once. (except East!) He knows that he looks the obvious tourist, but with his colors it doesn't change much. "I hope I'm not expected to help with scouting. I've lived most of my life in city and would probably get lost in less than ten miles...."

"That's a good question Xuce, and I hadn't even thought to ask. What are we supposed to do once we find the lights? Change the color? I hope not just shut them down. I can't see in the dark!"

"And where is the cave? There's a good bit of food in the wagon so I'm guessing that we've got a good bit of walking ahead of us. Should we all buy an extra pair of boots in case we walk the soles off of the ones we have?" His grin at the end makes it clear that he isn't serious about the last.

Nintos sees the first person set onto the Fast Road and with a grin he steps on. Standing at first and slowly getting faster with each step. “This I why I love magic!” He says aloud to no one in particular.

Seeing the statues as we approach, Nintos mumbles; “I wonder who they are, whose loved ones are gone forever.” I wonder if a spell could return them to flesh.

As Xuce and Zarsellet begin asking questions about the quest, Nintos speaks up “We are to find a cave with blue lights emanating from it. We are to explore it and map it. It could be hard to find. The twin dwarves I spoke to mentioned a small mining company near Isen that could potentially lead us closer to our destination. No need to wonder more than needed. Emmett is a dwarf that leads the small mining company.”

Merletta flies up and stretcher her wings.

"Are these people not important enough to turn back into people?" She asks the question aloud to herself, looking at the statues. "They're more useful as a warning than as a person?" It seems wrong to Myre, and she frowns. A bit of anger simmers in her gut.

She muses a bit until the anger passes. It doesn't pass all the way, but it dulls.

"I don't think she knew what was in the cave, just that it glowed blue in her dream."

Kwarsk wakes up, readying himself, and heads to the dining area and enjoys a large breakfast with plenty of white gold (milk), and perhaps takes a little longer readying himself for travel after that.

Kwarsk is later puzzled by the explanation of Idol City, but decides it's best not to experiment at first, to keep the locals content. Later as the group takes the lift and sees the statues of victims, Kwarsk resolves that the Idol City Rules are good rules.

Kwarsk listens to the others, taking it all in. Kwarsk has no solutions, but says, "We may have to investigate several caves. I am a skilled climber and can see in pitch blackness, so with the help of all of you, I think we stand a good chance of finding this cave with the blue lights."

Kwarsk remembers Rhys commenting about scouting ahead, and walks over to Rhys and says, "Rhys, that sounds like a good idea, but are you stealthy as well as skilled in finding your way in the wilderness? If not, you should probably stay within eyesight of the front ranks of the group. What do you think?"

After some discussion about turning these people back, or getting rid of the danger, or maybe just inventing paper bags, you find your way to the fort.

Which means you have arrived in front of a guard who once again reminds you that this is a nice establishment not looking for riff raff.

Various warnings and paper checks are of course interrupted with the sight of smoke and shaking ground.

“Not again,” the guard sighed. “Looks like I’m doing paperwork all night.”

Kwarsk notices the alarm of the guard, and takes a step back swiveling his head this way and that to gain a better "big picture" of the smoke and shaking.

Afterwards, Kwarsk hears Fingers' explanation of the group's "hobby" and finds it unintentionally funny.

Xuce looks around as the ground starts to shake and he sees the smoke looming overhead (perception: 12) then at the guards seeing in their faces that this seems to be a common occurrence. I do hope that everything is in order with paperwork, it was such a long journey to get out here just to have to turn around and go back because someone forgot to get something notarized.

It's difficult to ascertain through the fort's gate but there seems to be some commotion within the courtyard just beyond the walls.

The guard lets out a sigh as he opens the gates. "Ok, if you want to talk to him, be my guest...."

It doesn't take long to spot the source of the explosions, but the guard points it out anyway. "Really Feddon, it's not even 5 o clock yet."

The source, a dwarf in druid "armor" waving his arms and a stick, barely looks at any of you straight on. His response sounds vaguely like slurred cursing, but you can't quite make out what he's talking about. He stumbles and sways, as people in the courtyard hunker down.

"Well," the guard replies. "Have at it."

Turning his attention towards the commotion, Nintos smiles at the sight of the dwarf in his druidic armor. He awaits what the dwarf is going to say in response to the guard. This should be good. He things to himself.

None of any of that looks like something Myre wants to get mixed up with, but she knows that sometimes her...unique aura can get people to do things, even if it's just to make her go away. She looks longingly at Rhys, sitting with the wagon and relaxing. She sighs, then heads on in towards this exploding dwarf.

She watches as her friends introduce themselves. "I'm Myre. The guard says you turn explosions into paperwork. That is a neat trick and I would like to learn it." She smiles as she realizes she really would like to learn how to do that. "Does it involve hurting people? I try not to do that."

Nintos seems to think this is just a dark wizard expressing himself. Kwarsk points out that drunk dwarves are a stereotype, to the point that the guard actually double checks that he didn't say anything more that "That guy (who happens to be a dwarf) is drunk."

Kwarsk and Xuce walk over to ask if he is okay. Xuce and Fingers try to sense motive, but the dwarf (clearly drunk at this point) doesn't seem to be lying or malicious. He's just out of control.

Paige casts some defense spells just in case.

Rhys decides to let the others take over.

Myre wants to learn how to turn explosions into paperwork, preferrably without hurting people. "Causing a disturbance and property damage usually does the trick," the guard answers for him. "And I wouldn't exactly call it a neat trick to be learned. Unless you want to call my uncle 'archmage' or something."

Sighing. "He's usually not this drunk but he's usually not dangerous. He gets a little nuts, shouts and casts some spells, and eventually passes out or gets talked down or something."

The dwarf, Feddon, looks pretty scared and angry as his eyes dart unfocused at the people approaching. He waves his arms widely, his slurred speech saying something about blue lights and the scar. He takes a couple of tottering steps towards the fountain, and mutters something about never knowing love.

Having only seen the effect, and not any actual casting, Zarsellet's curiosity is peeked beyond his concern. Was this magic? Or had the drunken dwarf simply used some alchemical solution to cause the smoke and explosion?

There were already enough people asking valid questions though so he simply follows along watching and listening....

OOC: I thought I posted yesterday.... Reading the thread though, somehow I missed the day. Could have something to do with the 8+ hours of over-lapping meetings that I had to deal with in 6 hours of real time! Meetings are the ultimate time wasters for working!

Myre sees Nintos step up and try to play nice with the dwarf. Upon hearing said dwarf talking about blue lights, Myre's eyes tighten and she steps up. She senses the wizard's diplomacy might be a little shaking, so she grabs one of the dwarf's fingers on his casting hand and stares into his eyes intensely.

"Hey! Stop it! You can blow this place up after you tell us about the blue lights and not one minute sooner!" She continues staring him down as she waits for him to get himself together.

Nintos, sensing the danger, tries to talk Feddon down from casting the summons, but isn't very persuasive.

Kwarsk tries in vain to get some information, backed by Xuce. But even if they were better at diplomacy, it's not clear that they would ever understand him.

Zarsellet and Paige watch to see what will happen. Rhys begins to worry.

Finally, Myre screams at the dwarf to stop, and it causes the dwarf to utterly collapse by the fountain, screeching in fear. But at least he stopped casting and babbling.

Fingers looks intently for what the dwarf might have summoned but with the smoke dissipating, it's hard to miss.

A Gorrilla stares back at the group intently, silently, glancing only somewhat at the food carts nearby. On the other side of the square, a "swarm" of monkees screech at each other, at the summoner, at the clouds, at various residents.

By the fountain, the dwarf caster begins to snore loudly, to the various primates (including humanoids) chagrin.

And then the summons spread out, clearly intent on ripping apart the square, and anyone who gets close by.

Kwarsk, likely nearby the Gorilla and Fingers, is watching the Gorilla to see if it peacefully accepts the food bribe.

IF Gorilla eats fruit, does nothing, or is otherwise harmless, THEN Kwarsk moves (withdraw if necessary) towards the swarm of monkeys, intending (later) to prevent them from harming people, by force if necessary.
(This option means Paige's Sanctuary spell continues on Kwarsk as normal)

IF Gorilla attacks anyone, THEN Kwarsk moves in, drawing his waraxe as he goes (+1 BAB, no action cost) and attacks (Depending on how close Gorilla was to Kwarsk when it attacked someone, this was either a Delay -> Move + Attack, or it was a Ready 5' Step + Attack)
(This option would negate the Sanctuary Paige gave Kwarsk, though if the Gorilla tried to attack Kwarsk, it may have to make a save vs. Sanctuary first.)

(OOC: Apologies if you couldn't access the page. We are on turn 2, everyone should be on now, I made some guesses on placement based on description.)

Zarsellet begins with Inspire courage, then readies his dagger.

Nintos begins to summon. He's a little nervous that Fenton might interrupt him, but Fenton keeps on sleeping.

Fingers tries to... distract the gorilla? Engage in diplomacy? The gorilla responds with some massive chest thumping, warning the group to flee. (I moved you 20 rather than 30 from L14 - figured that would be a good and slow speed - towards the group).

Kwarsk readies an action.

Xuce moves up towards Nintos (I took the liberty of moving for you) and goes into defense mode.

Paige moves towards the monkeys (put you on the board too) with a tanglefoot bag, ready if the monkeys try anything.

Rhys (having trouble with page link) moves up, ready for battle.

Myre yells at the dwarf, who responds with some snot noises. She marches towards the primates. (OOC: I made the assumption that Myre would see that everyone except Paige was moving towards the Gorilla side and thus she moved to the monkey side.)

The primates fell quiet, staring at these newcomers. And then...

The Gorilla starts by charging Rhys, but misses. Kwarsk responds with his readied action, a five foot step, hitting for 6 damage.

The Monkeys lunge at Paige, and then rush to destroy a nearby sales cart, filled with halfling sized tuxedos and unicycles. A couple of the monkeys eye the no longer in cover vendor. The vendor in turn simply cowers, too scared to move.

Kwarsk, still close enough to the Gorilla to smell its body odor (ew!), swings mightily in a high arc at the summoned creature, surprisingly missing the tall creature as it chose just then to lean forward and down a bit to smash its next target. Kwarsk releases an audible held breath at the miss, snarls and growls like the gorilla and brings the axe back for his next try.

Nintos summons a dog to bite the gorilla and fires an acid dart that just hits for 7 damage. The dog hits for another 3. Rhys finishes off the gorilla easily. Kwarsk stands by.

Myre hits the monkeys with a color spray, and they begin to panic upon being blinded and stunned. Paige follows up with a tanglefoot bag (which hits because they are blinded).

Zarsellet continues his song. Xuce moves closer and tries to calm the cowering vendor.

Fingers akes a loot at the dead gorilla.

The monkeys basically do nothing.

(OOC - monster size - shouldn't the Gorilla be size L and take up 4 squares like Fingers? Likewise, monkeys are about halfling size, so shouldn't the Monkey Swarm be size L and take up 4 squares like Fingers, too?

Myre has better luck with an AOE spell for 3 damage.

Paige starts to heal Fintos. The dwarf begins to sit up and speak normally. "Who the bloody afterlife are you, pal?"

The monkeys begin to see, but they are still stunned. The closest NPCs take advantage of that, beginning to run.

After reading his Pathfinder Bestiary, Fingers realizes that only his blackjack will do full damage. He double-moves to Q5:R6.

A swarm is a collection of Fine, Diminutive, or Tiny creatures that acts as a single Creature. A swarm has the characteristics of its type, except as noted here. A swarm has a single pool of Hit Dice and Hit Points, a single Initiative modifier, a single speed, and a single Armor Class. A swarm makes Saving Throws as a single Creature. A single swarm occupies a square (if it is made up of nonflying creatures) or a cube (of flying creatures) 10 feet on a side, but its reach is 0 feet, like its component creatures. In order to attack, it moves into an opponent's space, which provokes an attack of opportunity. It can occupy the same space as a Creature of any size, since it crawls all over its prey. A swarm can move through squares occupied by enemies and vice versa without impediment, although the swarm provokes an attack of opportunity if it does so. A swarm can move through cracks or holes large enough for its component creatures.

Swarm Traits: A swarm has no clear front or back and no discernable anatomy, so it is not subject to critical hits or Flanking. A swarm made up of Tiny creatures takes half Damage from slashing and piercing Weapons. ...Reducing a swarm to 0 Hit Points or less causes it to break up, though Damage taken until that point does not degrade its ability to attack or resist attack. Swarms are never staggered or reduced to a dying state by Damage. Also, they cannot be tripped, grappled, or bull rushed, and they cannot Grapple an opponent.

A swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target Spells such as Disintegrate), with the exception of mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms) if the swarm has an Intelligence score and a hive mind. A swarm takes half again as much Damage (+50%) from Spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash Weapons and many Evocation Spells.

Swarm Attack: Creatures with the swarm subtype don't make standard melee attacks. Instead, they deal automatic Damage to any Creature whose space they occupy at the end of their move, with no Attack Roll needed. Swarm attacks are not subject to a miss chance for Concealment or cover.

The monkeys start to shake off the stun, and slowly avoid being glued to the floor (though the effects remain). With the vendor well away, they turn their attention to Xuce, standing nearby. (8 damage + distraction (Fort DC 14 to negate)).

Flinton finally snaps back to reality, but mutters his apologies. Since it was from a scroll, there is no dismissing the swarm, although....

The swarm begins to screech at Rhys, prepared to attack... and in an instant, they sit down.

"You need to hurry," Flinton grunts as he continues to keep the swarm under control. "I can't keep them controlled forever."

Kwarsk grimaces, lines up a Powerful axe Attack at the suddenly not-moving monkey swarm, and swings mightily through the swarm, unfortunately finding a gap in which no monkeys were present.

Rhys watches in amazement as the monkeys simply sit down, but the words spoken by the dwarf make it clear enough that he should continue his attack. Once again the long curved elven blade sweeps through the swarm (Hit AC 23 for 7 hp). The elf readies himself for retribution.

Myre's demeanor softens immediately. "Thank you. I don't actually like being unpleasant, but one does what one must."

She points towards the monkeys and brings more minute meteors down. This time large rocks pound into the monkey swarm, hopefully splatting a few quickly and humanely.

Fingers - regretting that he has to attack innocent beasts, but remembering that he's helping send them back to their home plane -- moves to S4:T5 so he overlaps the monkey's square (that's how you melee a swarm, right?). Then swings his blackjack.

Kwarsk misses with his attack.

Rhys swipes through again, with half damage (4).

Myre fires some more meteors and the monkeys just manage to avoid them.

Nintos misses.

Xuce looks to see if anyone else needs help, but it looks like the monkeys are focused on the PCs.

Zarsellet hits a monkey or two, for half damage (2). Every little bit helps.

Paige helps Flinton up, but he still seems rather shaky.

Fingers takes a sneak attack on the swarm (...it's a bit of a question of whether you can sneak attack swarms in general, but I decided that since monkeys are bigger than insects, and have their own rules...) again for half damage (3).

The alchemists fire explodes, and this damage is full (5).

And with the sounds of screeching and the smell of burnt fur both fading to oblivion, the other people begin to peek out into the courtyard and cheer.

"Well now, dear people," Flinton begins to say, "I think this calls for a celebratory drink."

The guard slowly began to shake his head. "So much paperwork," he muttered.

All summons dead. Battle over.

Kwarsk catches his breath, and then walks over to the other Dwarf.

Kwarsk says, "Feddon, or Flinton, or whatever your name is, I'd say well-met brother Dwarf, but the gorilla and the monkeys weren't well..." and Kwarsk grins, continuing, "While these fine guards start on their paperwork, after this mess (gestures), I think the least you could do is buy me and my friends a round of white gold-- that is, milk -- at the local tavern. What say you?"

With the battle ended Zarsellet quickly stows his bow and turns to address the crowd. He casts a cantrip to summon a steel stringed guitar and deliberately stretches the strings so his first "chord" is off key.... "Ouch! My friends, That sound hurt more than those critters did. But they've all been put down by my friends and I. You are all free and safe to continue your day, and spread the word about how our team dispatched those accidentally summoned creatures with great dispatch!"

He continues strumming the guitar and launches into a slightly bawdy bar tune. (OOC: Call it PG13?) Once done he tosses the instrument into the air and dismisses the magic.

”I’ll leave this fellow to you, Kwarsk, and go check on the others. A tall glass of ‘white gold’ and some cookies sounds like an excellent idea.” Paige says as she puts her Morningstar away and moves to where her companions are grouped in the courtyard. Spotting the wounded halfling she asks Xuce if he wants her to check his wounds, adding ”you don’t know what kind of diseases these creatures might be carrying…”

If Xuce is willing to be tended by Paige, he is Healed for 3 HP (1d8 + 2, and I rolled a 1, ugh.)

Myre gives her head a firm no at Kwarsk's suggestion. "I am not a baby cow, and milk hurts my belly." She turns to walk away, then turns back to add, "I'm not a baby goat, yak, or lamb either." She pauses, thinks, then gives her head a good nod once she thinks she's covered all her bases. She didn't actually know what kind of milk her dwarf friend likes to drink.

She's already had stern words for Feddon, and lets her companions take their turn on him. She takes a seat near the wagon, opens her pack, and takes out a few sheets of paper and an ink pen, along with a thin tablet to write on. She spends about two minutes writing up a witness report for the guards, hoping it will ease their paperwork load. She then spends several more minutes roughly doodling the fight, including her yelling at Feddon with flames shooting out of her eyes. Her penmanship is neat and tidy, but her doodles are more or less stick figures. She cannot draw.

That done, she stands and puts everything back in her pack (save the report), then hands said report to the guard. "A witness report. Not sure if it will ease your paperwork burden, but hopefully it's useful." In the time it takes the guard to look down at the paper and back up at Myre, Waddles has appeared in her arms. She strokes him lightly. "Waddles hid in my pack and cannot add to my account, I'm afraid." She turns and walks away, looking down at him. "Yes, I'm sure you would have been very brave..."

With the battle over, the gang turns to wrap up the results, including meeting with the new dwarf.

"Feddon, Feddon Flintsky and sorry about drunkenly calling myself otherwise. Druid for hire, explorer of the lands, at your service."

Kwarsk asks for a round... of milk. At milk, Feddon looks at Kwarsk like he just insulted Feddon's religion, but he keeps his mouth shut about it.

Zarsellet entertains the crowd in the courtyard, and eventually into the bar.

Paige takes some time to heal the group.

Rhys is in no mood for games, demanding that they tell him about the blue light. "All right, all right, I can see that you're not in the mood to be monkeying around. Let's not go all bananas on each other, ya big fiesty elf and that's fine. Course, I first got to know why you're poking around about blue lights."

Xuce asks about the blue lights from the rest of the guards, and gets a lot of blank stares.

Nintos is likewise in no mood and wants answers. But it's Myre slapping Kwarsk about milk and pig handling that gets Feddon a belly laugh. "Eh, what the hell. You guys seem way too eclectic to be an evil team anyway."

In a somewhat private room, Feddon takes some fluid stained maps and scratched notes before the group. "Right, so let's start at the beginning of my long and epic tale. Once upon a time, the scar was formed. And when I decided to lead a team to investigate, I discovered that the truth had already been discovered... and hidden throughout the wold. But what I did learn led me to nihilism and despair, forever searching for meaning in the bottom of a bottle."

Feddon chuckled. "Huh, that tale took a lot less time than I thought. Who next wants to hear the tale of when I discovered a cave of devils that had just invented... well, I don't want to spoil the ending."

Paige accepts a glass of milk from the round, and wonders if the spell Purify Food and Drink would render milk safe for the party’s little spell caster. Maybe an experiment for another time?

The cleric listens to the suddenly boisterous dwarf blather on, and rolls her eyes. When he pulls out some maps, she puts down her glass of milk, sits up straight and tries to read the notes he is scratching out.

Myre listens to Feddon's tale with rapt attention. When it's over, she takes a moment before announcing to her friends, "I like him. He's funny." She turns back to Feddon before continuing, "but you didn't say anything about the blue glow." Her eyes widen suddenly. "Did the devils invent the color blue?" She frowns when she's (presumably) told that they didn't.

"Are you trying to avoid telling the story?" She puts her hand on his, understanding written on her face. "Maybe you can tell Waddles? He's very good at not showing any judgement!" She puts the pig in front of the dwarf, propping his front feet on some papers so that he's angled up and looking into Feddon's eyes. She then puts her hands over her ears and closes her eyes to give them some privacy.

Enjoying sipping a mild drink Zarsellet listens to Feddon. He slips his writing supplies out of his pack and starts scribbling notes, both about the battle as well as Feddon's story. Devils? Didn't most stories speak of demons rather than devils? He could always change it later if demons sounded scarier....

"A cave of devils? Sounds interesting. Please continue. I use a personal short hand so I can keep up while I listen. Continue!"

Paige mistrusts this milk stuff, and focuses on the maps.

Myre finds him funny, and asks about whether devils invented the color blue. "Nah," Feddon said, almost serious. "For the color blue, you need angels to invent something so horrible.... And for something so chaotic as the scar, only a deal between devils and demons will do."

The group begins to pepper Feddon with questions about the story's details. Zarsellet asks about the other story but Feddon seems ready to focus. Fingers brings out the own maps.

Nintos shares sympathy with Feddon. Rhys is significantly more impatient but she holds her anger in check for now.

And so, Feddon began to speak of the formation of a group meant to discover the mystery of the scar, and later of the blue lights. Of a team composed of himself, of a dwarf miner named Emmett (that you heard already mentioned), of an elf archer who's name can't bloody be remembered now, of a colorful halfling or two, and of a teenage girl named Clarisse.

The story wound back and forth through the sparse areas and hard travel, but no part of the group ever made it even close to the cave that you now seek. The kobolds found them first. Hundreds of them, for all that they would let anyone see them. And Feddon's now ex-wife among them, having told everything.

Feddon eventually moves on, pulling out half a map, a coin with a hole in it, and a small bag. "This'll let Emmett know its time to go to the cave, that it's time to start putting the past behind us. He's got the other half. And... take this small token as an apology for all the commotion."

Inside the satchel is a masterwork cold iron light mace, a darkwood buckler, a potion of Hide from Animals, and a potion of Barkskin.

As Feddon mentions Emmett Nintos nods and speaks up; “Is he still the leader of a mining company out this way? What are some signs we might see that we are getting close to them?”

Nodding to Zarsellet; “Anything in great numbers will be difficult. We will have to find a strategy against such a large number of foes.” Nintos pulls out his spellbook and begins looking through the spells within and what might be useful.

Paige checks Xuce’s wound and wrinkles her brow. ”Maybe we should take rooms for the night, or at least take a long rest at the campsite, before we head out?”

The cleric looks briefly at the items the dwarf has laid out for the party, then looking at her friends she raises one tawny eyebrow, and enquires if anyone wishes to lay claim to one of the items.

Kwarsk ponders, then muses aloud to the group, "A teenage girl named Clarisse? What are the odds that it's the very same Clarisse in Plateau City whose prophetic vision sent us on this quest to begin with?"

Kwarsk turns to Feddon and says, "Feddon... this Clarisse, did she look like... (Kwarsk describes Clarisse of Plateau City's physical appearance) and have a gift for seeing visions or prophecies?"

Zarsellet pauses when Nintos looks over spells for large numbers of enemy. "One of my earliest outings was with a small group to.... Well, that doesn't matter. But we opened a door and faced a swarm of bugs. Regular weapons smashed a couple at a time but there were just too many. Choice was run or die. Ever since then I've always carried a couple of flasks of Acid and Alchemists Fire. Sounds like a similar problem, just a larger scale. Maybe we all should carry a few flasks? Cost a bit of coin but if needed they're worth it!"

At Paige's implied question he glaces at the satchel. Seeing nothing of interest though he just shakes his head slightly as he turns away.

Myre gets a brief flash of excitement when Xuce mentions heading out immediately, but her friends quickly quash that hope. They're still right, though. Plenty of time for sleeping under the stars in the days ahead!

The thought that Clarisse may have known more about this blue cave than she let on concerns Myre. If she had a whole adventure around it that failed...well, shouldn't she have mentioned that? She tries to think back to what little she knows about Clarisse, looking for a reason. Part of her wants to think Clarisse was a little mad, but that may be her imagination playing tricks on her.

"Hundreds of kobolds are dangerous, but if we know to expect them then we can plan accordingly, right?" She declines to state whether she means prepare to attack them or prepare to avoid them.

That potion of barkskin catches Myre's eye, but then she remembers that she's got her fancy bracers and Nintos is basically fighting naked. Plus, it might actually help the front line folks more since it worked alongside regular armor. Either way she realizes she's not the most appropriate person to grab it.

She briefly wonders if the other potion would let her hide from Waddles, but quickly dismisses the idea. She looks down at her toy & thinks, "you're not actually a pig, after all..."

Zarsellet continues jotting down notes, and asks if THEY are going to face hundreds of kobolds. "Truth be told, I'd be surprised if you met any at all. Far as I know, they all moved down south."

Rhys is ready to move on to the mining camp.

Xuce asks if you need anything else before heading out. Feddon notes that if you do, he's probably not the one to ask.

Nintos asks about signs that they are getting close to the camp. After Feddon stares for a bit, "Well, I imagine you'd see a camp, and it'd be in the middle of nowhere, and there'd be some dwarven mines around.... I'm na really sure what's trippin you up, but you lay off that milk, you hear."

Paige and Fingers want to rest before heading out.

Kwarsk asks Feddon if it's THAT Clarisse. "Well, it's been a while so I don't know what she looks like now. But knowledge of the scar, some form of divination, stubborn as a mule? Yeah, that definitely sounds familiar."

Zarsellet has a second thought that maybe its good to consider strategies, in case something unexpected pops up.

Myre is excited to get out, but agrees to spend the night. She also seems worried about the hundreds of Kobolds but even these gods aren't so cruel as to send you on such an encounter. But they are cruel enough to send you some leaders with hidden pasts and their own agendas, so that tracks.

The town is glad to let you spend the night and access food for free, so you can camp here or be on your way.

They also give the group 600 gp for your troubles. There's not much to shop here, but you can probably buy some basic supplies, i.e. restocking ammo or alchemical weapons. The group can also continue to discuss strategy or division of loot.

Paige picks up the mace, and gives it a little practice swing. It feels a familiar, yet different, and she appreciates that that difference can come in handy in certain situations. She eyes the dark wood buckler, then reaches out a tentative hand to lift it. ”This is so much lighter than the one I own!” she says, astonished. ”What wood is this? she adds, showing the buckler to Rhys.

Looking at the members of the party, she enquires if anyone minds if she claims the two items offered by Feddon, before adding ”somebody collect those potions!”

Rhys examines the buckler at Paige’s request. ”I’ve seen this wood before…it’s Darkwood; strong but very light. It would suit you well, and that mace will prove useful should we face fey or demons. I think you should carry them both. Alas the familiar clang of your armour will now be altered by the ‘clonk’ of wood upon metal as you may make your way. Pots and pans and wooden spoons; you will sound like the entire kitchen in no time.” the elf gives Paige a gentle rap on her armour to make his point, and a playful nudge before he dodges out of the way should she return the favour.

Rhys helps prepare camp for an overnight stay. In no time he has a fire burning with a pot of fresh water steaming over it. He pulls a dagger from beneath his cloak and begins peeling and chopping vegetables, herbs and potatoes. Each deft movement sends a piece of carrot, potato, celery or herb into the pot, with assorted peels, eyes and ends gathering in a small pile between his feet. ”You’ll find cured meats and bread in that hamper under the tarp” he points with his dagger to no one in particular.

Myre looks at Rhys curiously as he sets up camp in their suite. She looks up, half expecting to see starlight, but sees only ceiling. Myre shakes her head, clearing the vision of a potential future in which her friends had opted to camp overnight in the wilderness. She looks forward to eating his stew.

In the meantime, there's treasure. She claims her 600 gold. Seems like a lot for throwing rocks at monkeys and threatening an old man, but she'll take it. She leaves the equipment to her companions, though she'll take the potions if no one else expresses interest.

"So, tomorrow we leave for a mining camp to reunite Feddon with whatshisface, and then I assume we'll get a better idea of just what's going on? Is that right?" She looks around to her friends for confirmation.

The group discusses and divides the treasure haul, and begins purchasing (or discusses purchasing) supplies. There is some confusion, and the shop keepers explain to some of you that you got 600 gp from the town total (75 gp each, though you can agree to lend your share to the consumables users, or use your own unspent funds).

Rhys prepares camp and food, much to the delight of the rest of the group that anticipated hitting the town inn.

Feddon leaves you be with a grunt goodbye. Nintos responds with polite smoldering.

Whether in a camp or an inn, you all get an uninterupted sleep, and head out to the nearby camp the next morning.

Nintos move and takes his 75 gp from what was given. With the unknown of what is going to happen due to the word on the large number of Kobolds, Nintos goes to bed early and prepares for the morning ahead; “I am going to head to our room at the inn. I need to prepare a few scrolls before tomorrow.”

Going to his room, Nintos scribes a scroll of Grease and Obscuring Mist from his prepared spells. With the onset of potential battle, he swaps out familiar utility spells for more battle ready spells.

Before settling in for the night, Paige makes sure to take a moment and speak to the party members, commending them on their efforts to subdue the chaos in the marketplace of Sheuvan Fort caused by the druid Feddon. She singles out the newest members, letting Zarsellet know that she found his spirited song during the confrontation to be inspiring, and congratulating Xuce on effectively intercepting the monkeys and keeping bystanders safe.

”I collected the healing wand, since I can use divine magiks with confidence. In certain situations I can hand it to another - like if I’m required on the front line” Paige answers in response to Nintos question. ”By the way” she adds, ”conjuring that dog was a clever trick. Positioning him in a flanking position would provide Kwarsk or Rhys with a decided advantage in some situations.”

Paige reaches a hand towards Waddles and scritches it’s head before gently tugging on a rubber ear. She smiles at Myre and volunteers, with a grin ”you know, you can be pretty scary little one.” adding with a wink, Good scary, that is!

In the morning, the cleric will pray to Domi for guidance and the daily blessings of divine magiks.

Zarsellet accepts a share of the payment. Hearing the praise from Paige he is surprisingly embarrassing. He was used to applause and compliments when he sang for pure entertainment, but this was different. All of the team had been working and he had just done his little part. He does his best to accept the words and not show his embarrassment.

When she mentioned the healing wand he nods. "I can cast the spell myself when needed, but my magic is pretty limited. Perhaps later there will be more coin that can be used for purchase of a second wand."

Whatever is left over he shares with any of the local urchins who might be still in the area. Dinner completed he collects his share of the reward, cleans up the post dinner mess and tends to the mules. He wonders about Clarisse and the trauma he imagines she has suffered to make her forget whatever history she shared with the dwarf Feddon.

He has a thought. He sets up a few simple locks and a trapped box, then sees if he can open them using his Mage Hand from five feet away. It may take some practice.

Fingers tries some stuff with mage hand. He finds that he can open unlocked chests fine from mage hand, but using lockpicks or disarm tools proves too hard. (See separate email.)

There isn't much more to do and prepare to leave. And there isn't much of note for a few hours of wandering.

Eventually, you start to come to a clearing with a bunch of small tents and dwarves with mining equipment hanging about. Like Feddon said, it's not hard to tell that this is the camp you were looking for.

While Zarsellet wasn't a leader or anything like that, this dwarven camp looked interesting. Besides, he was beginning to wonder where this cave with blue lights was. He looks around at the tents trying to pick one that looked like it would be for the leader of the camp. He heads in toward that tent. "Hello. I'm looking for a cave with blue lights? Feddon Flintsky told us that we might get some information here. Could you direct me to your leader?"

OOC: Ouch! The 21 is perception to spot the tent of the leader. The 10 is my diplomacy roll for asking for direction. Guess my voice cracked? Should have shared a drink first!

Myre nods slowly, watching Paige curiously as she scratches Waddles. She wonders how Paige will feel about that after she learned what the toy pig was for...IF she learned what the pig was for. So far, no one had asked! She knew someone probably would eventually, they always do.

For now, she nods. "I am the apotheosis of scary." She punctuates the statement with a cheerful smile.

She watches Zarsellet ask to speak with the manager, glad that they've picked up a face. Myre was afraid she'd have to learn diplomacy. That would be unfortunate.

With a sigh, Myre decides to search her memories for the miner's name. "Emmett," she states suddenly. "I'm not sure if he's in charge, but he's the one we're supposed to talk to." She has a hunch that dropping Feddon's name is a great way to make Emmett refuse to speak with them, so she keeps that name to herself.

Kwarsk looks around and, using his deep knowledge of Dwarven culture, (OOC no named skill, just whatever any Dwarf should have) identifies the likely tent of the headdwarf (OOC Perception 27) and after a moment's contemplation (during which Zarsellet sallies forth and speaks), Kwarsk begins walking towards the tent he selected (which may or may not be the one Zarsellet selected) and on arrival bellows a proper Dwarven greeting - loud, boisterous, and to all species other than Dwarves... obnoxious? Kwarsk's greeting in Dwarven, to all within earshot, is "Hail and well-met my Dwarven brothers and sisters. I am Kwarsk, the Dwarven face of this motley party of adventurers. I seek our brother Emmett, whom I hear is in charge of this mining operation. I and my companions are in search of news of a cave with one or more strange blue lights. What say you?"

Reminder: you spent the night in the camp so HP, spell slots, etc. are reset.

The following characters look around: Paige (Perception 9), Zarsellet (21), Xuce (15), Kwarsk (27). There isn't much to see within the quite utilitarian campsite. There are maybe a dozen dwarves total, with a number of tents, carts, and mining equipment piles. The dwarves seem to be mining simple iron ignots, and smelting them there for presumably a later transport back to fort Izen.

Zarsellet asks some people around, mentioning the cave and Feddon (Diplomacy 10). Myre reminds Zarsellet of who they are meeting, and Kwarsk adds some color but fails to aid another (Diplomacy 2). Nintos is nervous about mentioning a cave with blue lights but that ship seems to have sailed. Myre is nervous about mentioning Feddon but keeps that to herself.

Rhys and Fingers stay behind.

It doesn't take long to find the camp leader, Emmett the mining guild contact. Xuce's sense motive indicates no ill intent or hiding.

By which I mean, Emmett seems to be all business, scoffing at Kwarsk's introduction. "Well met. I am Emmett, just Emmett. You're a little bit far from any tour group, aren't you?"

He grunts at the blue caves thing. "Well, I know better than to tell an adventurer to just turn back, so why don't you all tell me who you are and what you want? And then I'll tell you to just turn back."

In response to the mention of Feddon, "The less I hear about him, the better. But I know he has more sense than to just get a group to look for this cave. So I'd love to know what you did to the poor guy to get him to talk."

Like he'd been through more than just battling too many kobolds, which is what he mentioned." He glances over at Nintos, "And there was the coin. Nintos, Do you have it? He said it was time to go to the cave."

Rhys walks Fingers through the care and feeding of the mules, showing him how to hitch and unhitch the animals and brush them down. ”I am no expert, but left I brushed and matted, the harness will eventually cause a sore to develop. I haven’t worked with mules before but I assume they are just like the pack horses we used on our hunting trips”. Rhys slips a feed bag over the head of each of the mules, and while they are distracted eating he works his way around each animal checking their hooves for any embedded stones or other damage. Finding none he turns his attention to the conversations taking place with the dwarves.

Kwarsk is bemused by Emmett's all-business response, but then ponders a moment and recalls that the rest of the mining guild was much the same, regardless of ancestry. Kwarsk observes that Zarsellet seems well-spoken enough, and... how could Kwarsk have forgotten about the coin? Kwarsk joins Zarsellet in glancing at Nintos expectantly, maintaining a stoic guard pose and occasionally sweeping the area with his eyes for anything out of the ordinary.

Rhys and Fingers focus very intently on the horses.

Zarsellet tells him flat out about Feddon. "Heh, heh, the old rascal still got it." Emmett scoffs at the coin, but he takes it.

Kwarsk decides to remain silent for the sake of diplomacy.

Myre brings up Clarisse but we're actually saving that for another story.

Paige looks around for medical tents or religious signs. Nothing really pops out at first. There seem to be some basic first aid around, but it's not clear what they do for religion or medical emergencies, if anything.

Nintos mentions to Emmett (and reminds us) that this is really from Doris and Boris. "Well, I guess it really is time." Emmett takes a look at the sun. "We don't have much time left. You have Feddon's half of a map, then follow me."

On second glance, Paige begins to recognize the random space and poles as a possible religious space, though she can't tell which religion or how.

Emmett takes out his own coin, giving it to Kwarsk. "I figure the all mighty dwarf head of the party ought to take the honors." He directs the dwarf and Nintos to place their respective coins on each of the poles he highlights, as he places the two maps into the middle of the poles (Climb DC 10).

"Scald, have mercy upon us all," Emmett mutters to himself.

As Kwarsk and Nintos place the coins correctly (with some help), Fingers asks if this is a "sunbeam unlocks the secret" situations like he's read in old stories.

"No!" Emmett replies.

Sunbeams pour through the coins, focused upon the reformed map below.

"Yes," Emmett sighs.

Writings from invisible ink become visible. Drawings of mountains begin to form. And in the end, there is a clear spot, the location of the secret cave, only three hours away.

"Well, there it is, with a bit of advice. You'd best be turning around right now, and forgetting you saw that. I don't know if the worst is if you fail, or if you actually succeed."

Myre wonders if anyone, anywhere, has ever heeded such a warning. "Oh, I'm better off not knowing? Well then I suppose I'll go home and become a butcher. Thanks for the warning!" She chuckles at the thought and looks conspiratorially down at Waddles, the only other in on the joke.

"Don't worry, Emmett. We're on a mission from god," quips Myre, briefly forgetting the existence of martyrs.
