So I'm leaning towards asking the PTB to be allowed to play a zen archer monk, or play a primitive liontaur fighter who mainly uses natural weapons and unarmed strikes, or a short sword duel wielding rogue. What is everyone else playing?

I'm kind of disappointed Brian gave up on the bard idea. I was thinking just today that it would be fun to see him play a bard whose performance style was insult comic. :)
I've made three characters, and I'm just waiting to see which of them fits the group best. (I like all three and would be perfectly happy to play any of them.)
DM Mitch Wednesday October 5th, 2022 7:12:18 AM
Welcome to the board everyone! I'll check in here every morning and try to answer questions and review PC sheets as people start to get ready. I'm also going to copy/paste the e-mail I sent on character creation here for anyone who didn't see it.
I was going to say this when the new board went up but there have been delays and so I'll go ahead and say it since people are already considering their PC's. There was a lot of debate on the theme and style of the game when we were deciding it. Just 'Dinosaurs' isn't really a theme or direction and apparently the previous Cthonia game fell apart and had to merge due to lack of focus. What we eventually decided to use for inspiration was Jurassic Park - the game opens with everyone in charge dying and the PC's being part of a small group of desperate survivors trying to outsmart and outmaneuver the dinosaurs that are far more dangerous then themselves (none of this is spoiler's, it's literally scene 0).
So for character creation I would encourage flexibility, not necessarily the flexible classes but a flexible mindset. A raging barbarian who charges into every fight he sees is just going to die before the game even starts so please don't try to play such a character. If you want to go barb then play one smart enough to know that his rage at the dinosaurs who killed most everyone he knew must be tempered until he has an opportunity to gain an advantage to wreak bloody vengeance on them. You will be constantly either outnumbered, outgunned, or both, and objectives will often be about driving away or avoiding enemies rather then straight fighting them (Though we'll have that too).
The game description is "Dinosaurs! Appearing out of nowhere, they have ravaged the town of Cloudhaven. Now heroes must step up to keep the survivors and themselves alive in this perilous land." and we'll open with a brief scene 0 where you can introduce yourselves and your job before the disaster before all heck breaks loose and the PC's all find their way to a cave outside of town that the survivors huddle in until the fireworks stop. You can certainly have NPC's as part of your backstory, but be aware we are limiting the number of NPC survivors to 1-2 per PC. You are of course allowed to make as many fallen friends, family, etc. as you want.
Also note that the town is a trading town with lots of people going in and out at all times. With the local dangers being Dino's you won't be some veteran warrior who fights them all the time, that's the job of all the 10th level+ NPC's who are going to die at the start, but you can be someone who works there as a supporting role, an apprentice to someone else, or someone passing through town as part of the trade route who gets trapped there.
I just had the amusing notion of a 1st level fighter/barbarian/whatever who's job description is "pest control" because the weakest dinosaur pests are at least CR 1/2 so the skills of a trained soldier are needed for the job XD.

DM Hugh Wednesday October 5th, 2022 11:08:50 PM
Also to reiterate what Mitch said your group is among a small band of survivors so if you wish you can also describe 1 or 2 low level NPCs your PC would know / is friends or family with in your backstory and we can add them to the group.
I know a lot of folks came from Humbles where there was an extensive NPC network to draw on for support such that at low levels carts were lent out but if you attempt to describe more than 2 friendly NPCs your character knows then be prepared for the excess NPCs to die horribly. fair warning

I'm thinking my guy could be a hermit that lives in that cave and helped guided the survivors there for safety.
Also, are there any rivers or seas nearby?

I had my mind set on barbarian because, in the 40 years i've been playing never played a barbarian. Just need to decide what race.
DM Mitch Friday October 7th, 2022 6:18:54 AM
Here is the page on the area in the woldpedia: Cthonia
I the town is situated on one of the plateaus near the top. I want to say the middle one, but am second guessing myself and will get back to you. As you can see that means there's a sea to the north and a river to the south. The lift up to the top of the plateau is on the south side.
You can be a hermit who lives in the jungle and was just visiting town if you want, though with the extremely high CR of everything living around you a lvl 1 hermit surviving on his own stretches credulity a bit.
DM Hugh Friday October 7th, 2022 1:54:29 PM
Do hermits have apprentices?
DM Mitch Friday October 7th, 2022 4:02:49 PM
I don’t see why not. I can think of three or four reasons why He might have an apprentice off the top my head.
JonathanT Friday October 7th, 2022 11:08:50 PM
My wild guess is that we still start out at level 1 despite the fact that level 1 NPC/PC stepping out the door risks immediate death?
DM Mitch Saturday October 8th, 2022 4:11:19 AM
Ok that's just weird. The link works fine when I paste and go, but as soon as I put it in a href link it breaks.
Yes, all games start at level 1. There are several reasons this is not as nonsensical as it might seem.
1. this town receives some trade, meaning that there is at least a semi secure route through the forest that isn't too dangerous.
2. it's on a plateau where the biggest, most dangerous dinosaurs can't get to. This way the town can hold all the required support staff and supplies. This makes the sudden appearance of giant dinosaurs all the more shocking and mysterious
3. there's a bunch of level 10+ NPC's around who provide security and safety to the rest of the town and probably escort caravans to the place. They're capable of handling the bigger dinosaurs for the most part, though not in the numbers that show up to sack the town.
We have fully thought through how the dinosaurs get to the top of the plateau and it will be a big mystery that the PC's will solve at some point after you have secured basic survival needs and are high enough level to win a few fights against the bigger dinos.

DM Mitch Sunday October 9th, 2022 7:49:42 AM
Per Woldian rules all first level PC's start with maximum starting cash. You also use point buy with 25 points.
You can play any legal class or race you want. It's easy enough to find a reason you are there, especially since this is a trading town. This isn't like Humbles, which was unique in it's racial theme/requirement.
Not sure why your link is working and my wasn't but hey I'm going to copy/paste the formatting so I can make a link to character creation page on the Woldpedia.

DM Mitch,
Thank you for the clarification. It's been so long since I started over at 1st level.

Question:
As a budding Profession(Alchemist) can I purchase an Alchemist's kit? It's not from the core book though:
This kit includes an alchemy crafting kit, a backpack, a bedroll, a belt pouch, a flint and steel, ink, an Inkpen, an iron pot, a mess kit, soap, torches (10), trail rations (5 days), and a waterskin. The kit does not contain a formula book because an alchemist begins to play with a formula book and does not need to purchase one.
Marest Bralfah (Jon-Paul) Sunday October 9th, 2022 5:47:28 PM
Question:
What about just purchasing an alchemical crafting kit itself?
Also, since Witches at 1st get either a Spirit Bond Cauldron / Animal, does that assume that the Masterwork Cauldron is provided for this to function?
RobC Monday October 10th, 2022 12:45:31 AM
Just re the Cthonia link... I suspect it was a copy/paste from a doc. If you hover your mouse over the original link you'll see it has a carriage return appended at the end. ie: http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Cthonia< br >
It's the 'br' that's breaking the link.
DM Mitch Monday October 10th, 2022 8:25:37 AM
As far as I can tell the Alchemist's Kit is just a bunch of stuff you could buy anyway so sure. Also as far as I can tell an alchemical crafting kit just lets you use the skill on the move, you need a true lab to get the +2 bonus for having a toolset.
Yes, any class features come with the class and don't require you to pay for them unless the class specifically states otherwise. Especially at level 1
2) Sages Guild or WLA member (I considered mailed fist but I'm not really doing melee)
3) Bonus point into skills rather than HP, and add craft (traps)
Melvin Monday October 10th, 2022 9:40:52 PM
One thing I haven't figured out yet is a plan B. The idea is to build a jungle sniper, someone that kind of slides through the grass and shoots at the dinosaur, eventually taking vital strike feats. But since I'm trying not to class splash, I don't know what the plan is if I miss and a dinosaur comes barreling down on me.
DM Mitch Tuesday October 11th, 2022 8:06:04 AM
Have one of your 7 other buddies stand between you and it?
Jeremy Tuesday October 11th, 2022 9:15:35 PM
Melvin, you could take the Improved unarmed strikes feat, and punch or kick the Dino.
So I decided to go with another cleric build, this time it's a human Votery Cleric of Burfell. He will be traveling with a great sword wielding small earth elemental.
Melvin Wednesday October 12th, 2022 9:00:49 PM

We will start as soon as everyone has characters ready. If you have completed sheets please post them here and/or e-mail us to tell us they are ready for review.
We will never gainsay any PC's build choices as long as they are wold legal. All of the classes on the Woldpedia class page can be played to my knowledge.

So when you are in a google doc and hit the share button at the top right you have 2 options, share via link or e-mail permission. It defaults to e-mail and you can put my e-mail in the box and change the drop down to the right to be "to edit". That will give me permanent access as long as I'm logged in with that e-mail to google docs.
Alternatively you can hit where it says 'restricted' and change it to 'anyone with link'. Then you again change the drop down box to 'to edit' and copy the link to an e-mail to send to me. That will send a link that will let me edit as long as I can find the link.
You hitting the button in the email you mentioned didn't seem to work so maybe Hugh got access. To be safe could you try one of the above?

Jonathan - lots of DMs have edited many people's sheets here in the Wold. I've appreciated it when they've gone over mine - they gave me insights and good suggestions.
I'm using an Excel program called TOS+ - The Only Sheet (the + is for Pathfinder). Versions exist for other D&D versions, too. Once I have it largely wrapped up, I'll transfer it to one of the Woldian Google spreadsheets.
Working on the backstory, too. Will keep it under 90 pages. [j/k - it will likely be ~1 page]

Well, when I update my PC sheet, my habit is to do it on my PC first, specially since Google excel sheet isn't a true excel sheet, delete the google copy and upload the updated one. So whatever the DMs edit, that they don't tell me, will be wiped out. And there's no reason for a DM to edit any of the data anyway, so if it's just to put your stamp, fine, got no problem with that. I'll just try to remember to cut/paste your stamp on my PC sheet before I wipe out the google sheet.

Checking in on you guys. I'll email this too, but I think it's time that you good people start posting daily (Yes I see you're still OOC [out of character]) just to stay in the habit and to help push things forward.
First post here was on 10/4 and we're not done with sheets yet. So I'm setting a goal for you to have the sheets done and ready to play in one week which would be Next Friday October 28th.
Let me repeat, unless I relent at the request of your DMs ::grin::, all sheets need to be done by the end of the day on Friday, October 28th.
DMs, if you've set a different goal let me know and if there is a problem let me know. Once sheets are done you may take a week after the game has started to get the sheets approved. I highly suggest that Hugh and Mitch are given permissions to edit all character sheets and that they put a "sentence of approval" on them each time you level.
Something like: Sheet approved for level 1 by DM Hugh
One of you can DM the start and the other can do most of the work on approving the sheets left to approve.
DMs, set yourself a goal of having the sheets all approved in 2 weeks from now please.

Reviewed several sheets. Feedback
@Jeremy everything looks good but I don't see languages listed anywhere. Since Minotaurs do not start with common and I see you picked up a rank of linguistics probably to learn common please include that somewhere on your sheet.
@Brianw - everything looks good. I'm not sure about the usual approval thing we add and a PDF. I don't really want to make you re-write the sheet and I think it's optional just highly encouraged so we'll just skip it for now.

PDF sheets usually have an option to add notes. At least the ones I had for my job training. Look for it on your right-side margin. However, obviously, if you are creating your sheets on your home pc and converting to PDF to upload you loose any DM notes done that way. You may be able to cut/paste those notes, not sure.
