DM BatMark -- The Hills Have Eyes Thursday October 6th, 2022 9:42:48 PM Mole takes to the skies in bird form, despite his unease. He sees no significant movement in the canyon. Drack stays close to the wagon and waves Rob over. Robert Loryn asks Grog to elaborate on his comments about what might be hereabouts, and checks to see whether anyone can communicate with the scouts. Mortimer tells Loryn that he never had much luck with pets, and shakes his head to clear the memories. Ash Torrynashkabbeth slinks forward, looking for signs of trouble in the trees, but spotting none. Manolo goes into stealth mode and looks about carefully.
The scouts spy no obvious threats. As they look from ground and air, however, they do notice a number of cave mouths dotting the hillsides. There may be more hidden in the trees.
Grog replies to Loryn that he expects that this is the area where some of the tribes of monstrous (har har) humanoids have historically had their lairs and hideouts. That’s why he’s led you here in the first place, to see what the current situation might be and what threat they pose to Windhorn hamlet. As he relates this and your scouts are able to report on what they have seen so far, he seems to be waiting on you all to decide what your next move might be this afternoon.
The scouts have reached the general area of BW25 on the east side of the map

,"I didn't see much. There is though, a cave entrance not far from where we enter the canyon. It's just up a short way to the north east. I don't see any good reason why we should go past it and leave a potential problem to appear behind us. Of course, if there is anyone home, I doubt I can speak with them. I only know Woldian and Elven. Still, I figured, as it's not far, I could go take a look."
Things had seemed very quiet. She didn't want to alter that. Going stealthily back to get a closer look seemed to her like a sensible option. Then again, Torryn was hardly renowned for her common sense.

Mole returns from scouting and assumes his natural form. He listens to the plans being discussed by the others. He takes out a small pipe and places it to his mouth he says "There are tribes of goblins, ogres and other things roaming around these hills and your idea is to make a frontal assault into a cave we known nothing about and can't see into? These creatures are not stupid." He says. "They are cunning; they set traps; and they know how to protect themselves against the larger denizens of the area." he pauses lighting his pipe. "Why don't we find a place to sit and observe the area for a couple of days. By then, we should know if anything lives in there and we can move accordingly."

DM BatMark -- What's Up Next? Friday October 7th, 2022 10:01:20 PM Ash suggests heading to the water and looking for signs of life. Torrynashkabbeth reveals a cave mouth on the northeast side of the canyon. Robert favors a forceful approach, but defers to the others. Mole returns and resumes his dwarven form. He reacts quite negatively to the idea of a frontal assault, and after offering some insights into the likely behavior of the local tribes, suggests instead that you observe the area carefully, then move accordingly. Drack stays with the main group and waits on Loryn to devise a plan. Loryn does not immediately offer a thought. Mortimer goes dark for a moment. Well, dark-er, you might suppose. Manolo stays stealthy and watchful.
Grog nods thoughtfully as Mole offers advice. ”Sounds about right. In the past, attacks on Windhorn became more likely when a strong leader controlled several tribes or when one tribe began to dominate the others. Because several humanoid tribes live close together here, this is probably a good place to see what is what these days. So what’s your next step? Or do you wanna burn all the daylight first?”
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Saturday October 8th, 2022 3:02:51 AM
Wait and see. That just wasn't Torryn. She sighed in resignation at Grog's tacit approval of Mole's suggestion. It was, she had to concede, not an idea that she'd have ever been likely to conjure.
"I wasn't proposing to further in." She countered defensively. Her concern had been not to enter the ravine too far and permit something to ambush them from behind. That being noted, she was curious and still wanted to take a look inside.
"I only wanted to take a sneaky look. Still, if someone is there, I suppose it would help if you spoke 'monster'. I don't." Torryn only understood Common Woodman and Elven.
"Um, just so you all know; I'm not very good at the whole waiting thing." She felt it was a good idea to get her apologies in first. Torryn was built for dancing. Sitting around waiting for stuff to happen was a complete anathema to her.
Robert (Brent H) (39/39 HP | AC: 21; Touch: 12; FF: 17, CMD: 20) Saturday October 8th, 2022 10:03:26 AM "Actually, I said recon by force. If we want to check a cave, instead of sending a single person to try and tiptoe up on it, I think we should all walk up together, in a protective formation, call out and see what happens. Like Torryn is suggesting, these things live here. Just because we see one entrance or two does not mean there are not more. They could just be waiting for nightfall to then hem us in and come at us from all sides. Personally, I'd rather be dressed for the occasion than have to fight them in my skivvies." Rob replies to Mole.

Torryn liked Robbie's plan. She gave him an approving smile. Still, it didn't feel right to just barge into someone's home. Whilst her patrons could help her determine if they were evil, it really help a lot if they actually communicate.

Then the tribes retaliate against the people. The people suffer, the adventurers do not." He pauses for dramatic effect before continuing. "I believe we are here to see if there is any danger to the town from the tribes. Not to start it. We should observe, gather information, and not create an incident that will potentially cost lives. I know it's not as exciting as charging in head-first, sword drawn, cleaving all that stands before you; but..." he again pauses, "I have grown fond of this area in the years I've been out from under the mountain and I would prefer not to see it turn red because we did something to cause it. Loryn chuckles at Torry's ask. It seeme3d to odd to the gnome to want to treat the foul creatures with respect to their homes and and talk to them and also refer to them as monsters in the same breath. He keeps his musings on the matter to himself and elects to say more with less approach,
"I can speak in the tongue of giants and orcs."
Loryn nods to Mole on this and the dwarf thinking. "I'm in agreement with Mole. We're here to see if something is brewing and not to start any conflicts. We can afford to sit tight and simply make camp. See if any of the natives feel bold enough to talk."

DM BatMark -- Where's a good hideout? Monday October 10th, 2022 8:44:43 PM Robert meant recon by force, meaning moving up together to parley. He isn’t inclined to get caught with his pants down in camp. Mole reminds folks that adventurers drawing revenge is bad for the town, and that the party is here to gain information. Loryn reveals that he can speak the languages of giants and orcs, and agrees with Mole’s subtle strategy. Drack agrees with Mole and Loryn that talking is preferable to fighting, at least to start with. Mortimer agrees with Mole about not just smashing in. He wants to stake the place out, then hit them quietly when most vulnerable. Torrynashkabbeth clarifies that she wasn’t proposing to go further in, just take a sneaky look. She doesn’t speak ‘monster', and is visibly impatient. Manolo tries to stay stealth while keeping an eye on your surroundings. Ash ponders silently.

Grog's was a good question. In her opinion he had a bag full of them. Sadly, she had no such bag of good answers.
"We mostly don't see well in the dark. So, I guess the main thing is not being seen. We'll likely have to rely on our hearing. Plus, we still need to rest. Not everyone will be on watch. Why not stay here, where we can guard the horses? The locals won't be doing much harm in that valley. We should be able to spot if any of them exit it. Of course, that's just an idea.". “Well Robert, my lord Domi has granted me the power to remove fatigue with a use of my healing ability. The downside is, I only get so many a day, and using one to remove fatigue also wastes an opportunity to heal an ally in combat. If you wish, I can use one on you in the morning. Drack likes where you are and plans to sleep in armor, knowing from his training that he can ease his fatigue with a mercy from Domi. He explains to Rob how this works when the latter asks. Mole stays on watch after just a few hours of sleep. He makes some suggestions for keeping the camp hidden. Loryn agrees with his fellow party members’ plans, and takes first watch with Drack. Mortimer is glad that the party agrees with his wise advice. He looks for ways to bolster the camp, and thinks about disguise ideas. Robert plans to sleep with sword and shield close by, and aks how Drack can sleep in his armor. Manolo stays quiet, presumably trying to stay stealthy.

"Look, guys, I'm sorry to be a pain, but the spell casters ideally need to be first and last watches. It's great that Loryn and Ashy have taken those. So, it looks like Robbie and Morty for those middle watches. Middle watch isn't much fun. I don't mind pulling my weight - when I don't need to regain my spells, but we do have a good number of spell throwers. I'm just not convinced a static watch order is fair or for the best. I did use magic against the basilisk, so do need to regain it. I'll therefore assist with last watch, if that's okay? It made sense to her to keep herself and Drack on seperate watches. So e of their skills overlapped. It made more sense to spread them about.
Torryn wore no armour. Having discovered how effectively she could freshen and clean through the judicious use of her Mending magic, sleeping in her clothes wasn't a big issue, as much as it felt odd. She figured she'd give it a try. If she didn't sleep well, she could always revert to undressing.

(AC is correct in the header)
If the sky wasn't filled with cloud, there would be some light, she hoped. She couldn't recall what phase the moon was in and certainly had no chance of assessing it from under the wagon, where she currently was.
(My understanding is that she can see TWICE as well as a human in dim light; so, provided night vision isn't necessitous - as in a cave - she should be able to see something - unless of course it's cloudy and there are no stars or moon to provide illumination of any sort.)
(DM Note: Good point, I have revised the DM post. There is very dim light, so you can see somewhat.)

Mole Drack decides to cover the back of the camp, and calls for some light. Loryn readies a Glitterdust for when the rider reappears. Mortimer Chill Touches goblin 6, hurting it and draining some strength. Ash winces from his wound, and retaliates with a magic missile for 4hp of damage to the rider. Torrynashkabbeth dodges the puff of dander from the rat dog, and back kicks goblin two for 1hp of damage. Manolo discovers that sneak attack works on blinded targets (denied their Dex bonus to AC) and shoots goblin 2 right through the mouth, which proves fatal to it.
Loryn sees the goblin rider and lizard coming down the hill toward Drack, and is able to Glitterdust the pair without striking the half-elf. The lizard pulls up short in apparent confusion, moving its head about oddly. The goblin chitters at it angrily, but his charge has been spoiled.
Goblin 5 blunders toward Mortimer, provoking a potential attack of opportunity if Mort so chooses. Goblin 6 takes a blind swing at Mort as well, but it goes wide. Goblin 1 swings at Rob but also misses.

Seeing her opponent fall, Torryn moved forward. It seemed somewhat unfair striking at the small, blinded creatures, but she knew that were the positions reversed, they'd have no qualms about attacking any of them. She lunged forward to send a whipped back fist into the side of the goblin's head. It caught him solidly on the temple snapping his head to the side.

DM BatMark -- An Army of One d20+5=16 ; d4+3=4 ; Friday October 21st, 2022 10:12:06 PM Robert’s scimitar finally tastes flesh, nearly splitting goblin 1 in twain. Mole moves up to assist Mort, swinging his hammer at Goblin 6 and dropping it instantly. Drack readies an attack if the goblin rider and lizard come within reach. Loryn is pleased to have stopped the lizard with his glitterdust, and bets Morty’s gold that its rider is the leader. Mortimer kills goblin 5 as it blunders into his reach, then rounds of goblin 6 only to find it already laid low. Ash fires another missile at the goblin rider, striking it for 8hp more, mumbling about his rat being smarter than the gobbo. Torrynashkabbeth steps up and kills goblin 4 with only a small amount of remorse. Manolo shoots at a goblin but misses.
The goblin rider, despite his wounds and in the face of plain common sense, urges his blind mount to slowly move toward Drack. Amazingly, it ducks under Drack’s readied swing, and takes a swing back, hitting Drack for 4hp of damage. The lizard seems unable to scamper away quickly as it had done before, perhaps having to pick to carefully ahead in its blinded state. Loryn uses speak with animals to try and calm the gecko. Drack lays hands on the gecko-riding goblin after taking the precaution of putting his sword to its throat. Manolo starts looking for valuables. Ash notes the goblin picked the wrong fight. Robert thinks their first encounter in the hills has gone well. He starts checking the bodies for signs of life. Mortimer begins to cast a spell, but is impeded by his armor. He suspects the goblin may be faking its death. When Drack asks about killing the gecko, he points out that it is a useful and trained mount.
Mortimer does not sense that the goblin is being deceptive. Between the healing from Drack and the additional burning from Ash’es acid arrow it jolts awake and whimpers in pain. The goblin quickly sees that it has no chance to fight its way out of this.
Meanwhile, Robert finds another of the goblins and one of the rat-dogs haven’t bled out. Not yet, at least. Manolo notes that each of the goblins is similarly equipped – leather armor, a wooden shield, short sword, short bow, and 20 arrows each. He finds a total of 52 gold pieces among them The one Drack revived has better gear, at least, but hasn't been searched yet.
After a few moments the gecko opens its eyes. It, too, appears fearful until Loryn talks to it. But he has the feeling the reason it’s not moving is because it’s still staggered from Drack’s blow.
Grog stirs over by the wagon. ”I was wondering if you were going to be able to capture one. Goblins don’t put their sturdiest warriors in a hunting party. Well done.”

Grog's statement didn't make much sense to Torryn. Why wouldn't goblins send out their best warriors? This seemed particularly pertinent if they were hunting people or other tribes. If those warriors were fulfilling defensive roles, they weren't a threat to Wyndhorn and its environs. Then again, what did she know? This was all very new to her.
Torryn sighed. What to do now? The goblins had unhesitatingly attacked, but could she just leave them to die? None were moving. None groaned in pain. It seemed that they were indeed all truly dead. She decided that rather than checking if her assumption was correct, she'd make far better use of her time in keeping watch to ensure that nothing else had been drawn out by the sounds of battle.

She worries about leaving goblins to die, and concludes watching for the next danger is more important. Loryn agrees with Mortimer that the gecko could be valuable. He points out to Torryn that Robert has found another goblin that’s still alive, and suggests they help it. Drack suspects Grog is testing them. He asks if anyone can speak a language their prisoner can understand. Manolo bides his time. Ash tries the languages he knows. Robert understands goblin. He advises they not help the injured ones. He asks the goblin its name. Mortimer wonders why Torryn thinks his chain shirt would cause problems. He tries to intimidate the goblin. Mole watches the interrogation and keeps an eye out for more activity.
A goblin is not known for its bravery, and the one Drack is holding was clearly bested in the battle. The goblin reacts to draconic, but does not seem to understand any of the languages Ash tries. When Robert questions it, it readily says that its name is Smagdras. It does not volunteer anything else. In the moments when it can take its eyes off of Drack’s sword, glances across most of the party without focusing on anything in particular.

Torryn was pretty sure that the armour was Morty's problem. This didn't come from any profound arcane knowledge, but the difficulty of dancing in such attire. It was far, far easier to dance in minimimal attire. It made perfect sense, to her at least, that the same applied to casting magic.
In response to Loryn's discovery, Torryn moved to his location, bow still in hand. It seemed strange to help someone that had just tried to kill her. She was far from certain how she felt about that. She could not bring herself to simply end its suffering, if it was even suffering. What decided matters for her was the conclusion that it really wasn't a threat at all. Even if it brought others.
"Get well, I shall bestow the gift of dance." She informed Loryn and Robert. Dance was life, to Torryn and her patrons. Torryn knelt and placed a delicate kiss on the injured goblin's forehead. Clearly, her patrons were as ambivalent about the goblin as she was for the healing bestowed was not great.

Robert (Brent H) (39/39 HP | AC: 21; Touch: 12; FF: 17, CMD: 20) Thursday October 27th, 2022 8:18:53 PM "Ok, goblin, members of the hill tribes have been raiding towns, why?" Rob asks not wanting to give the goblin a leading question but also concerned it is not smart enough to answer and open ended one.
DM Steve -- Goblins are often fodder for the stronger folk. Thursday October 27th, 2022 10:52:11 PM Mole is quiet. Manolo waits. Torrynashkabbeth is pretty sure Mortimer’s armor is causing him problems. She considers Loryn’s request to help the dying goblin, and decides she will. Loryn is concerned that they appear to by the bullies. He suggests a more diplomatic approach. Mortimer agrees with Loryn, though he finds it unnatural. He prepares to dig a grave for the goblins. Robert asks the goblin why members of the hill tribes have been raiding towns. Ash waits to hear what the goblin said. Drack keeps an eye on the goblin and explains to Robert that they are investigating potential threats to the town.
The goblin that Torryn healed sleeps easier, but is still unconscious. However, she is confident it will recover in time.
The goblin being interrogated by Robert and Drack swears his tribe has not raided any towns. Not since he was a child! It must be other tribes. Sometimes they have to, when the ogres and trolls take things.
Grog explains that he wanted them to come here to see whether an attack from the tribes is likely. Attacks become likely when a strong leader controls several tribes or when one tribe begins to dominate the others. Because several humanoid tribes live close together here, this is the best spot Grog knows of to see how the tribes are faring.
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Friday October 28th, 2022 2:43:39 AM
Not being able to readily follow the conversation Torryn contented herself with a return to guard duty. It was certainly far preferable to digging graves. She found that despite the little creature's malevolent ways, she was pleased that it would not die, at least, not at her hands. If she continued her adventurous lifestyle no doubt manner others would, so sparing even one, was a thing to be savoured. She wondered if she could create a dance based on these events and decided that it wasn't a good subject. Instead her mind drifted to the bow. What was it, it did again?

Mortimer continues to dig at the grave. He gives sideways glances at those who aren't doing anything. He wonders what's stopping them from grabbing a shovel and helping, he thinks to himself.
A conversation continues in his mind. 'Hey Morty, that is such a nice hole; can you teach me? Sure, I'd be happy to teach you proper shoveling basics and the hole philosophy. A proper hole requires a balance between solid earth and the economy of negative space. It's what you make of it. A hole is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think. Wow...you're so insightful, Morty. Thank you, so kind for you to say.'

He moves to keep an eye (or ear) on the caves.

She couldn't think of another reason for them to exhume their dead. Perhaps though, she being shamefully mean to them. Maybe they had certain religious observances that they wished to complete. What it amounted to, was that she next to nothing of the peoples of the hill tribes.
DM Steve -- That is such a nice hole. Saturday October 29th, 2022 11:23:23 AM Torrynashkabbeth tries to guard the others while they deal with the goblin. She would rather guard than dig graves. Overhearing Mole talking to Mortimer, she wonders why goblin would want to dig up a mass grave. Ash waits to see what they learn. Mortimer continues digging the grave, aware that the others are not helping. Robert asks the goblin if anyone is trying to make them work with other tribes. Drack backs off a bit. Mole looks at the corpses. He suggests to Mortimer that digging the grave will be wasted effort. He watches for more trouble from the caves. Manolo and Loryn are quiet.
The goblin says to Robert, ”Our goblin leader is a powerful leader. We do not need other tribes! Filthy orcs and kobolds? They are worthless as slaves. We rule the valley.” and spits (carefully, to the side, where no one is standing) to emphasize its words.

I think it's us that they'll seek revenge on. That's because we aren't going anywhere until this matter is safely resolved. And no, we aren't even partially responsible. Efforts were made to de-escalate the situation, but they were determined to attack at all costs. They started it. But, I guess it falls to us to finish it. If the rest of the tribe is as reluctant to talk as these, well, it seems like there'll be a lot more blood she'd before things come to and end."
That was Torryn's take on the situation. Obviously, if their little group dropped easily the goblins would, as Mole said, be all too apt to escalate matters further. That however, was not going to happen.

Loryn steps over to Mole when he calls for it. his knowledge of goblins was limited to stories, but nearly everyone of those stories put goblins squarely on the lowest rungs of the ladder, right next to kobolds, but without the cleverness associated to the draconic descendants.
"Could the goblins actually be in charge? Given what we have seen, that seems far fetched, but why say it? "
"As far as retaliation, one thing in our favor is the distance. At least for right now. I'm open to suggestions on how how Mole. My first thought is he goes back with his comrade and we sit tight. Robert could write out a message to deliver." Loryn waves off the party of protests, "I know, I know a host of reasons that is a bad idea. Option 2 we let them go and head further in to see if we can engage another tribe. We still the tribe name and this great leader's name and if they rule the valley, maybe he could explain why the orcs and kobolds make such bad slaves."

I can tolerate the stench of death, to a point, but not the foulness that will fizz from these blighters. If you knew, you'd all be helpin' me."
When the discussion turns to possible reprisals for killing this raiding party, Mortimer will stab his shovel into the ground and add his two coppers.
"Revenge? Naw! Them gobbies ain't gonna care about the lives of these grunts. Don't get these bastards confused with you and me. They don't comprehend concepts of kinsmanship ... no lovey dovey families tucked them in bed at night; all warm and snug-like. No, each and every one of these lil monsters survived their childhood by eating their brothers and sisters! The only thing their clan will care about is the loot they were sent to pillage."
DM Steve -- Could the goblins actually be in charge? Monday October 31st, 2022 10:36:59 PM Mortimer points out that he’s not burying the goblins out of compassion. He argues that the goblins won’t care about revenge, only the possibility of loot. Mole pulls the others aside to talk while Drack and Robert interrogate the goblin. He thinks the fight will draw the goblins to retaliate against the local farms. He wants ideas to keep innocents from being involved. Manolo asks about checking on the orcs and kobolds as well. Drack guards the goblin, waiting to learn what the others discuss. Torrynashkabbeth doesn’t believe the goblins would go raiding, because the party will stay until things are resolved. She points out the goblins attacked without provocation. Loryn recalls that in all the tales, goblins are only low level threats. He proposes a couple of options – let the goblins deliver a message to the tribe, or go in and find the tribe themselves. Ash and Robert are quiet.
The group debates what to do with their prisoners and how to handle their situation. No one is questioning the goblin at the moment – it doesn’t appear to understand Common, and is trying to figure out what is going on. The quiet and probably menacing presence of Drack and Robert keeps it from trying to leave.

Mortimer doesn't let the laziness of the group get to him, he tirelessly continues digging until his hole is sufficiently deep. He then grabs the first goblin by the leg and lobs it carelessly at the hole (Hit AC: 14). It lands at the bottom with a soft thud. He grabs two more, one in each hand, and does the same (Hit AC: 10 and 25. crit threat 8). First one lands at the edge and dangles over the side, the second goblin slams into the other, knocking them both in. The sport of it puts a devilish grin across Mortimer's face.
Mortimer walks over to the headless goblin with his shovel. He first throws the body into the hole (Hit AC 12). With a wicked chuckle, he tosses the goblin's head up into the air and bats it with the flat edge of his shovel (Hit AC: 17). It to lands on target ... "Woot! Two points!"
He senses he's probably had too much fun with the dead. He takes the last two dead goblins and simply drops them in. As for the mangy rat dogs, he scoops each one up with his shovel and deposits them into the mass grave. Mortimer then begins the gratifying task of filling it in. After overfilling it slightly, he tamps it down and places the layers of sod back over the bare mound.
Mortimer stands there looking over the grave, deep in thought. It appears he might have something thoughtful to say. No ... he simply spits on it and strolls back to the camp. He'll leave whatever clean up that needs to be done for the morning.
Robert (Brent H) (39/39 HP | AC: 21; Touch: 12; FF: 17, CMD: 20) Tuesday November 1st, 2022 10:08:09 PM "Why did you attack us?" Robert decides to ask the goblin while waiting for the others to finish their private conversation.
DM Steve -- So, what do we do now? Tuesday November 1st, 2022 10:46:48 PM Torrynashkabbeth doesn’t want to dig graves, and considers getting some rest. Drack continues to guard the prisoner. Mortimer continues digging. Given time, he buries the dead goblins and their dogs, and replaces the sod. Ash doesn’t see a reason to bury the goblins, which would only tire them. He suggests walking into the goblins with their prisoner and trying to negotiate. Manolo keeps quiet. Robert asks the goblin why they attacked. Mole and Loryn are quiet.
Grog doesn’t join the conversation, but he pitches in to help Mortimer. He also points out that the scene of a battle isn’t the best campsite. Never know what will come sniffing around if a meal might be involved. So whatever the group is planning, might finding a different spot to sleep be a part of it?
The way Grog sees it, you know the size of a hunting party in the area. That doesn’t tell you the size of the tribe, but it does tell you the how dangerous the threats they expect to face in the area are. In particular how dangerous any orc and kobold hunting parties are likely to be – not so strong that they’d want to risk the losses that the goblin hunting party would likely inflict. And that tells Grog that ogres and trolls aren’t very active in this part of the hills right now. ”That will change in a year or two, change being a part of these hills, but for now it’s a comfort.”
The goblin answers Robert that it was an honest mistake, but seeing that the group included a dwarf and a gnome they assumed the worst.

It's the arrogance of adventurers to think there are no repercussions from their actions; just because they are lesser races. If the chief, wants to retaliate, they will all come together and attack." He says before pausing. "You only consider the aftermath of the attack- treasures taken, people killed. You do not consider the motives of the actions. Mindless, bloodthirsty, killers are the words used to describe the beasts after they attack, never the why. Nature doesn't work that way. Goblin Chief, tribe name, other tribes the chief rules Kobolds tribe, orc tribe, any ogre sightings
barring any real additional information, Loryn would rather light a couple of large fires and stay put through the rest of the night than wander off and he certainly does not want to try and navigate horses and a wagon in the dark in the hills. "Fortifying and staying put with a lot of fire to put off the curious seems a stronger course. But if you want to wander out, lets do it."

"I was going to be sneaky." Torryn replied to Loryn. That he would be making an unmissable spectacle was actually a good thing. It would divert attention away from what she and Manny would be doing - sneaking: lots of sneaking. Sneaking would be the best way to find somewhere safe. They could then move when it got lighter. For now, it was light enough for her.

One good-sized chunk is still missing, leaving his arm permanently disfigured. Torrynashkabbeth volunteers to scout out another campsite with Manolo. She suggests looking further into the canyon. She plans to be sneaky. Manolo volunteers to go with Torryn. Loryn makes several suggestions to Robert what other information to ask about. He would rather light large fires and stay put than move the campsite. Drack agrees that a new campsite is a good idea. He continues to guard the goblin. Mole talks to Mortimer about what motivates goblins. He says there is always a reason behind every attack. Mole helps conceal the grave. He volunteers to look for a new campsite away from the caves, opposite the direction Torryn has chosen. Ash and Robert are quiet.
Anyone leaving to go look for another campsite should probably roll stealth and perception checks.
At Loryn’s prodding, Robert learns from the Smagdras that his chief is Sluzz Licktoad, and the party should tremble in fear at the name. (Smagdras says this with sincerity – he, at least, is afraid of Sluzz.) Sluzz commands hordes of Licktoads. The kobolds and orcs? The goblins call them Largescar and Redfang. Ogres? There used to be an ogre in the gulch, but the goblins killed him two summers ago.
Grog suggests that wandering around in small groups is not a good idea right now. How would two or three of you have fared against the goblins that attacked? Definitely not as well as the whole group did. Remember that the tribes here are nocturnal hunters.

Torryn sighed. Okay, so it seemed that now was not the time to be sneaky, not least because Manny didn't see as well as she did in the gloom. There was sense in sticking together, but she didn't like the plan to make multiple fires.
"Let's not make any fires. Look, there was a fight. It made some noise for sure, BUT, no one has come to investigate.... Yet. If they do, why have a beacon advertising where we are? We stay as we were, at least until dawn. If something else comes and isn't friendly, it can share the same fate as these little monsters."

Loryn thinks they risk staying without fire since the bodies are buried now. He leads the giant lizard aside and ties it off. Then he tries to comfort Mortimer. Torrynashkabbeth decides not to go sneaking, that they should stay put and not build fires that would draw attention. She apologizes for not helping Mortimer, who is awesome at grave-digging, and offers to dance for him. Manolo was ready to go scouting, but agrees to stay with the group. Robert thinks nothing interesting is going on out here in the hills. He explains that the goblins attacked because the party is in their territory with a dwarf and a gnome. He thinks they could leave in the morning. Mole doesn’t hold anything he may have done against Mortimer. He is ready to help the others not leave a trail and to go looking for another campsite himself, but the others explain they’ve decided to stay here. Drack agrees to staying here with no fire. He wonders what to do with the goblins and the lizard. He thinks they should find the chief in the morning. Ash does not want the group to split up.
The rest of the night passes somewhat fitfully, what with having a prisoner to keep track of as well as the potential of being found. Grog stays up for a good bit of it. But nothing else happens by. The lizard gets antsy as dawn approaches, but in the end just turns away from the sunrise and hides its head in shadows.
The morning sun does disturb the goblins, though – both Smagdras and the goblin that Torryn healed but that slept through the rest of the night. The goblins are both pained by the sun, even when they turn away like the lizard has. The one that had been out asks some questions, which Smagdras answers tersely. Robert can translate that the first wanted to know what was going on and Smagdras told him to shut up, that they’re prisoners.
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Friday November 4th, 2022 3:22:07 AM "Do you think we could just let them go? That would be an act of good faith. I know it's a risk, but there's maybe a chance that they'll take a message; that we want to talk. I'd set all three loose. Not holding "hostages" might seem dumb, but it shows we are serious and also that we're strong enough that we don't need any. Also, then we are free to move around without the restrictions of guard duty and having "spies" in our midst." It was an idea she expected would be shot down, but to heritage its merits. Plus, if she didn't speak up, how was she going to learn? She could go 'sneaking' and look to follow the goblins if the others decided that her idea had merit. Whilst matters were decided she attended to Spot. The judicious application of several Mending spells soon had both Spot and herself looking and smelling at their best.

Would be useful to try and get eyes on the orcs. The kobolds less so. the cunning lizards loved their ambushes and their darkness. Too few of the group thrived or really even did well in such conditions.

Take care in the ...um..bright light and try not to start fights you can't win. You know, you guys should totally try dancing. That gets all the badness out. And if it doesn't, most people are too tired to do anything nasty.". Torryn smiled, going for a reassuring, gentle smile, that couldn't possibly be taken for being predatory. She unbound the goblins, stepped back and shrugged. She had no idea which way they wanted to go, so didn't want to point. Moreover, she was unarmed. All in all, she hoped that she was the least threatening of the group.
DM Steve -- Maybe it'll be some form of peace talks. d20=16 ; Saturday November 5th, 2022 1:12:23 PM Loryn agrees with letting the goblins go, and looking around elsewhere in the hills. He thinks there will be more to learn than what the goblin could tell them. He plans to ride the lizard, though. Torrynashkabbeth suggests letting their prisoners go – all three. She might try to follow them if this happens, but first she tends Spot. Afterwards, she approaches the goblins and frees them, making explanations she knows they can’t understand. Drack agrees with Torryn. Manolo is indifferent to freeing the goblins. Ash agrees with freeing the goblins. Mortimer keeps silent, but it’s clear he disapproves. Robert and Mole are quiet.
Each of the goblins is still pretty wounded, and they don’t make sudden moves while Torryn unties them. As she steps back and shrugs, the goblins bolt in different directions. The sunlight clearly bothers them, but doesn’t seem to be slowing them down. They head for brushy areas where it would be easy to hide, but the continued noise makes it clear they are not stopping to do so.
The group needs to decide their next move – follow the goblins, look for the goblin lair, wait here for more goblins to show up, or go elsewhere. In the meanwhile, Loryn tries to mount and ride this lizard. He sees that while the lizard dislikes the brightness of the sun, it also likes stretching out in it.
If Loryn fails a Ride check at DC 5, then Highlight to display spoiler: {This is going to take some getting used to. Grog volunteers that if the group wants to go find the goblins, he can stay here and guard the animals and wagon.
"I don't think they really know where they're going."' Torryn observed with some concern as she watched the two goblins seeking to make themselves as scarce as possible. She then considered going exploring. She and Manny could certainly scout the area in daylight.
"You know, I don't think many of these guys come out during the day. Not much anyway. We can likely get all the rest we need during this time, but I wouldn't mind doing a bit of 'sneaking' first. I mean, all information is useful information, right? So, I sort of figured if Manny and I went had a sneaky look, we could then rest up ready for tonight's fun and games. Because those guys will definitely report back and then blame us for everything. But if they have a clever leader, they may well see past that interpretation. I guess it all depends." She didn't say on what, mainly because she didn't know. Nor did she have any real idea about what 'sneaking' might achieve, but gleaning anything would be an improvement on what they had at present.
"You fancy a look-see, Manny? Grogsy said he'll guard."

DM Steve -- Shouldn't we all just get away from them and get more information? Monday November 7th, 2022 11:47:33 PM Mortimer wants to chase the goblins, but fights the impulse. Loryn points out that they are not here to route the goblins, and suggests looking elsewhere in the hills. They already know the goblins aren’t working with other tribes. Torrynashkabbeth doesn’t think the goblins know where they’re going. She’s ready to scout the area. Robert favors letting the goblins go. He’s ready to look elsewhere in the hills, even if that invites trouble. Manolo is willing to sneak and scout with Torryn, but thinks Loryn’s idea makes more sense. Mole has already offered his advice, and will follow the group decision. Drack is ready to do whatever the group decides. Out of curiosity, he asks what they got from the little monsters. Ash agrees with Loryn.
Each of the eight goblins on foot was equipped with leather armor, a wooden shield, short sword, short bow, and 20 arrows. Everything is sized for a small humanoid. There was a total of 52 gold pieces among them The gecko-rider escaped in his armor (studded leather) but left behind a sack, a goblin sword known as a dog slicer (mwk), another short bow, and 20 arrows (mwk). The sack contains seven vials and two tanglefoot bags. And, of course, there is the gecko.
The consensus seems to be to move on rather than confront the remainder of the goblin tribe. There’s room in the wagon to carry things. It takes a little back-tracking to find a point to head northwest, the gully itself being too steep for the wagon and the direction the goblins came from.
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 d20=14 ; Tuesday November 8th, 2022 2:55:16 AM
Torryn shrugged. Sneaking would have to wait for another day. In the meantime she could enjoy Nature's beauty and practice some dance steps as they went. She was sure that Spot would appreciate her dancing, just as she appreciated Spot. It was strange to be so tall. From the saddle she had a very different view of the world.
It made sense to take the weapons and money, but she had no interest in either. Such was not the way of the Sacred Dancer. It was an impassioned way. That passion was for dance and the myriad wonders that could inspire it. There was no place for greed. That thought made her smile. You just didn't see many fat dancers: not Sacred ones anyway. Not that being overweight should ever debar anyone from the joy of dancing! It was simply that it was a physically demanding undertaking; one that shaped the body accordingly.
Despite such ruminations Torryn did attempt to keep an eye out for potential trouble.

Mortimer checks out the loot as they go. Ash rides in the wagon. Loryn answers Robert. He hopes to confirm that their troubles in Windhorn did not originate out here.
All of the loot is secured – there is room in the wagon – and the group moves out, heading generally northwest through the hills.
Mortimer discovers that three of the vials are magic, and eventually deduces that one is a potion of bull’s strength and two are potions of CLW. The non-magical ones are determined to be alchemist’s fire.
Grog laughs at Loryn’s description of Windhorn as a quiet hamlet, ”Although, to be fair, of late it has been. When there were still dragons and the Sentinels were needed, well, Windhorn was far from a backwater then. And for a long time afterward, it was still widely known to be the place adventurers would most often retire to, at least within New Elenna.” Grog seems to be thinking in terms of decades, not years.

It was a bit frustrating that the monsters only came out at night. Torryn wondered if she'd get a full night's sleep. She still had magic aplenty though, so it was not yet a concern. What was more of a concern was that the little friends had access to so much fine weaponry and magic. Or was it that. Or, was it that magic was simply far more abundant than she'd ever believed?
As Torryn tended to Spot, she looked up at the sky noting the moon and cloud cover. That would certainly prove important if they had visitors again.
Several 'mending' spells later and both she and Spot were in pristine order. Spot was fed. She wasn't.

He suggests the group call itself the fellowship. He teases Loryn about cooking the gecko. Torrynashkabbeth is frustrated that they haven’t found a monster to encounter during the day. Watches are set, and the night passes uneventfully. In fact, the next few days pass uneventfully. The Red Hills are not living up to their reputation as a hotbed of giantish, trollish trouble. Grog is happy about that.
About a week in, Grog suggests that it’s time to head back to Windhorn. ”And let’s not retrace our steps, the goblins may have set up an ambush. Although they tend to be lazy, it hasn’t been that long and they’re sure to still be on alert.”

"Thanks Guys, that was absolutely excellent. You know, I'm really not a big eater of meat - at all; so that was actually pretty perfect for me". She duly skipped over and planted a delicate kiss on the forehead of each.
As to the route back, she merely shrugged. She saw little point in looking for trouble - as the goblins had done. No, the alternate route meant that she could savour the environment and the rugged beauty within it. She might even get ideas for a new dance!

"I can give you some tips." He says to Mortimer. "I find it an important skill to learn. Natural often will grant a bounty for those who now where to look."
DM Steve -- Nature often will grant a bounty for those who now where to look. Thursday November 10th, 2022 11:07:22 PM Mole agrees to help Mortimer. Drack also mentions the name “Windhorn Warriors.” He agrees with returning to Windhorn, although he had hoped for more action. Loryn points out that lizards are supposed to regrow their tails. He considers a couple of names for the group that he does not think the others would accept. He thinks a different route home sounds good. Mortimer would like tips from Mole on foraging. He thinks it will be nice to sleep in a bed again, when they get back to Windhorn. Torrynashkabbeth agrees with calling the group the “fellowship” even if some might find it bland. She thanks Loryn and Mole for the meal. Manolo is happy they had no bad surprises. Robert and Ash are quiet.
As the group heads back to Windhorn, it seems the route they have chosen is getting rougher. Which is to say, they are having to be more careful in order to get the wagon through the hills. The terrain is fully as treacherous as it is in the mountains, it’s merely not as tall as in mountains. Grog directs them to a low pass that he knows the wagon can manage.
Around noon the next day, they are at the top of a hill looking down on a narrow trail. From where they are, they can see that it goes into another gully, has a couple of switchbacks, and will take them along the bottom of the hillside that’s now across from them. In that hillside, they can see two caves – one in the south side, and a higher one in the east side. The path gets within fifty feet of them. But as they look down now, they are not close.
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Friday November 11th, 2022 3:03:02 AM
It was a pity that Loryn hadn't offered up "The Heroic Woldian Adventureres' Protection Society". Torryn would definitely have voted for that. It sounded fun. She could have then been a Thwapper!
The caves below drew her eye. It was still daytime, do a monster trap seemed unlikely. Still, it would pay to be prudent.
"Should Spot and I ride on ahead? If anyone is at home they won't catch us all and we could lead them back to you - if they're super angry and stuff." She offered.
Drack (Chris J) - hp 35/35 - AC 17 Friday November 11th, 2022 12:17:33 PM
"I'm not sure one person splitting off is a good idea Torry. If something is watching and waiting, and they decide to all jump you, it could be ugly. My thought would be that we continue down as we are, and as we get close, you Robert and I will pull forward of the wagon and make sure nothing is there. That way, if there is trouble, there will be three of us in the middle of it, with spell casters within range. Loryn? What do you think?"

"I'll take flight and scout ahead." He says. If all are in agreement, Mole will take the form of a bird and fly off ahead of the wagon.
DM Steve -- I don't like the idea of going through that canyon either way. Saturday November 12th, 2022 2:26:57 PM Torrynashkabbeth offers to ride ahead in case the caves are a trap. Monsters won’t likely catch up with her on Spot. Drack doesn’t think splitting up is a good idea. At least not yet, and if they do it should be with the fighters within the spell-casters’ range. Manolo does not like the caves. They could hide an ambush. Mole listens to the others. After a bit, he offers to scout ahead in bird form. Robert doesn’t like using the canyon even without the caves, but he understands that they’re stuck with the route. Ash moves for a better view of the caves and to listen to the planning. Mortimer and Loryn are quiet.
The group studies the caves well, but doesn’t see anything threatening about them other than that they are caves very close to the trail, and who knows what they could be hiding. Certainly, Manlolo is usually observant and he sees nothing outside to worry about. The options right now seem to be letting Mole take a couple of minutes to fly directly over there and check it out without backup, spend forty or fifty minutes following the trail around to the caves with everyone and the wagon, or having scouts break off from the party somewhere along the route. Then there's Robert's observation that an ambush could come from higher on the slopes. At least the party knows where the caves are, and can decide how they want to approach them. The route will take them past the lower cave first, then the upper one.
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Saturday November 12th, 2022 6:09:41 PM "I don't mind. Whatever you think works best." Torryn replied. She was ready to scout if needed, but could see the wisdom of all sticking together. At least, she thought she could. Planning was not her forte.
Robert (Brent H) (39/39 HP | AC: 21; Touch: 12; FF: 17, CMD: 20) Saturday November 12th, 2022 9:46:52 PM "I like Mole's idea of scouting. Not necessarily the caves but the upper ridges. If he can confirm there is no one above waiting to ambush us then we can go through the canyon with boldness, ready to deal with whatever may come out of the caves without having to worry about the ridge. Plus, its good to know he can fly. That means he could hit anything up on the ridge should it come to that."
Drack (Chris J) - hp 35/35 - AC 17 Sunday November 13th, 2022 1:03:47 PM
“Let’s wait for Mole to get back back and report. Let his information determine our course. The trail leading down between the caves is the easiest route for the wagon, so if it’s safe or appears so, then we should take that and proceed in the manner I first stated.”
AC 13 HP 26/26 Loryn Glitterfall; Dan K Monday November 14th, 2022 9:44:44 AM
Loryn is in agreement as well. Mole can transform into the perfect scout and his knowledge of local fauna means he can become something not out of place as well.
"We'll wait on your return Mole."
To the group at large, "Unless Mole finds something terrible, I am for putting on our big boy britches and taking the route between the caves. We are after all, The Heroic Woldian Adventures Protecting Society, and not a bunch of farmers."
Torrynashkabbeth (Nick) HP:27/27 AC:20 F9: R:10 W:12 Monday November 14th, 2022 10:05:06 AM "THWAPS forever!" Chorused Torryn, casting a sideways glance at Drack to see if he'd bite.
Dm Clint -- Help with a Birdseye View Monday November 14th, 2022 10:08:42 AM Torrynashkabbeth sees the wisdom in Drack’s comment of moving forward as a group.. Robert likes Mole’s ability to fly. It offers the party tactical advantage. Drack wants to wait for Mole’s return to see what is learned. Loryn also wants to wait on Mole’s return, but also believes they need to man up and go the route between the caves. Mole continues scouting ahead Manolo, Ash & Mortimer are silent.
Mole Only Highlight to display spoiler: {You’re flight ahead is an easy one, but also one that reveals no sight of ambush or traps. As you get directly over the two cave entrances you see that from the lower entrance there are faint markings of tracks that could be a small dog or a fox. The upper one does not have the same faint tracks, something a little larger moves in and out of the upper entrance.}
Grog holds a hand to his brow to shield his eyes from noon’s sun as he listens to the group's decision on what they should do next. Every now and then giving them an assuring grunt and a nod. “I don’t like the idea of unexplored caves this close to the town.”
Grog takes in each of his travel companions; “Nothing has appeared coming or going from the cave. You should all go and make sure there is nothing within the cave.”
The party continues to move forward to cut down on Mole’s return time from scouting ahead.

Dm Clint -- The Darkness Ahead Tuesday November 15th, 2022 10:13:11 AM Torrynashkabbeth gets ready to sneak off ahead, bow in hand this time. Robert follows at a distance from those scouting ahead. Loryn is overwhelmed that Torryn called the group by name. Mole returns back to the group reporting on what he saw. Ash keeps his eyes on the cave starting to sweat at what could be within. Mortimer wakes up from his nap and jumps at the ready. Manolo & Drack remain silent.
Torryn slinks off ahead down this low winding path that starts to change in elevation as it steadily climbs. “As the trail switches back and forth don’t let him get too far out of our sight.” Grog urges the group to keep a little closer distance.
Closing in, Loryn & Co. find a good place to leave the mounts and wagon behind; “I’ll keep watch, listen for three bellows of a horn if I need your help.”
Evening is creeping in at this point when the group makes it to the first of the two cavern’s entrances. Roughly 60 feet ahead of where the party stops you see a wide opening of 15-20 feet in the wall that quickly tappers off into a 10-foot entrance. From where you are, you only see darkness within.
From what Mole described, there is another entry point that must be around the bend ahead some 80-100 feet. But you cannot see it.
