Rolth silently notes Haltavar’s fanatical desire for Justice, and wonders whether he might follow the path that Kiwina has taken. Something that can be addressed later, given that we seem to have stumbled upon a scene of mass murder. His ears prick forward, noting that the scene is strangely devoid of any other creatures than the reptiles feeding, with no other birds or beasts to be heard. He nods to Ayotnom, who has clearly picked up on the same thing. He scans the area carefully, looking to see if there might be signs of any survivors hidden in the area, and joins Kiwina in trying to discern any more details about the appearance of these beasts. He moves quietly to 33-34/C-D to get a better view.

Mak said looking at the wingless dragons. "What strange beasts are these anyway? My tutor never mentioned such creatures. If they are indeed animals, perhaps a loud noise will frighten them away?" Mak whispered as he sighted down his two arrows. "Are these common to the area Rolth?" Mak asked the Petals Liontaur.
DM Mark - Big Critters, but do you fight them? Tuesday October 25th, 2022 8:19:02 PM Kiwina motions for the villagers to fall back out of sight. He would like to ready an action to charge, but instead readies an attack if these creatures charge and attack. (Charge is a full round action and the Ready Action can only ready a standard, move, or immediate action.) Mak readies an action to shoot the creatures if they attack. (He would not be able to ready a full attack action, only a standard action to attack.) He suggests letting the beasts be and perhaps the Petals to their lair. He asks if these creatures are common here. Ayotnom lets the other know it’s rather quiet except for the large lizards eating the dead cows. Rolth also notes the lack of other animal sounds. He tries to quietly move to a better tactical location as scans the area for survivors. Tsak and Esmerelda move up. Wil summons a Lantern Archon. Elyas shares with the other what he knows and moves forward, crouching behind a rock. Falco agrees with Elyas’ description of these things.
Crunch, crunch, munch, crunch.
The villagers are happy to hide behind the trees (just off the map.) Halvatar refuses to go with them, and stays where he is transfixed on these huge reptiles. The villagers do not fuss with the child, not wanting to attract attention by dragging him away with them.
Munch, munch, crunch.
You do not see any other liontaurs here. Perhaps they fled or have already been eaten, though reports were that they were assumed slain.
Crunch, crunch,crunch.
The creatures continue gorging themselves on the dead cows. As Rolth moves and several of you talk, those that had rolled Perception over 30 will note that these big animals do seem to be aware you are here, they are just more intent on their meal.

Mak keeps his bow trained on the creatures, ready for an attack. Kiwina tells the others he can create thorns to slow these creatures down, but does not want to limit the Petals with this. Tsak would like to watch and follow these creatures back to their lair, probably underground near a volcano. Rolth would also follow these creatures to their lair. As Ayotnom moves up, the nearest of the creatures stops eating for a moment and regards the monk. It then returns to its meal, keeping an eye on Ayotnom.

Rolth gently chides Halvatar, "What are we doing? Why, we are trying to find out what actually happened to your family, protect those who still live, and deliver justice to those who have wronged you. You say that these beasts killed your family. Tell me, did you see this happen? Do you have any evidence beyond supposition? Some of the clues we have found so far suggest that the reptiles came after your family was attacked. So now what we are trying to do is figure out whether they were brought here to mislead any inquiry and hide evidence that would lead us to the murderers, or are simply dumb brutes that showed up to eat the livestock once it was unprotected. If we were to just kill them and assume that justice was done, we might well miss the opportunity to find the real killers, and allow them to strike again. Revenge may be swift, but justice is patient. You are brave and determined, but justice also requires wisdom, so let us think upon these matters and do what is necessary to get the quest done right."

(I wasn’t really sure if you still wanted to go round by round or just wait these creatures out. It seems to be the latter, so I’ll roll with that.)
The party continues to discuss what they could do, but keeps their distance in general. Beyond some movement, no one takes any actions. The marks on the ground are too far away and in the middle of the allosauruses (allosauri?) to see any better.
As Rolth and Ayotnom advance, the closest allosaurus will stop eating long enough to stomp its feet and then lower his head to utter a frighteningly loud ROAR. Between Rolth and Tsak telling Haltavar to simmer down and this beast’s roar, the child remains sullenly quiet gripping his rock.
You can see the glowing Lantern Archon complete a full circle around these creatures, making sure not to come within about 30 of any so as not to antagonize them as instructed. About the time it makes it all the way around as instructed, the spell ends and it vanishes.
After about 10 minutes or so, the creatures seem to have finished eating what they intend to eat, and most of the dead cows are now gone. They begin to pull back and leave.
You can later learn from Halvatar that he never saw what killed his family but he seems convinced it must be these creatures. The villagers seem sure it must have been these creatures, though they also did not see what attacked either farm. The villagers ask, “Will these creatures come for the rest of out farms? Will they attack Frog Hollow?”
Tell me if I missed something. What now?

Still unsure of the intentions of the creatures, Tsak sticks with Kiwina. From that position he can see some coins and drag marks and a lot of different attacks that would indicate the use of magic or a number of creatures with interesting abilities. Certainly they were not caused by the dinosaurs.
These animals aren't responsible for what happened here. Loot has been uncovered and there are signs of fire, acid and electricity. Something else is going on. A hunting party could take care of these lizards if required, I think the Petals need to stay on the scent of whoever or whatever is actually performing the attacks.

DM Mark - "I bet it flies." Monday October 31st, 2022 7:27:01 PM Elyas looks at the tracks, announcing there was another big reptillian creature here and this one had four legs. Rolth thinks something other than the allosauruses looted this place. He points out burn marks showing fire, electricity, acid and cold damage - clearly some sort of magical damage, perhaps a magical beast. He says the place warrants more investigation. Kiwina suggests following the allosauruses. Wil can see a box shaped thing was dug up here near the two partial bodies, but it is nowhere in sight. He notes the scattering of a few gold coins that seem to have been left behind. Ayotnom notes that perhaps the stolen loot could have been used to cover funeral costs. He also notes the magical damage here. Tsak also notes these things. He suggests a hunting party could take care of the dinosaurs and that the Petals should track down the larger threat. Falco agrees, wondering what sort of thing could make these marks. Mak is sure the beast that was here can fly.

The villagers exchange some surprised looks when Tsak suggests a hunting party could later take care of the allosauruses.
As the allosauruses leave, Halvatar says sullenly, ”You’re letting them get away. They’re getting away.” The boy seems exhausted. The villagers surround the child, gently telling him the Petals know what they’re doing. They suggest returning to Frog Hollow to inform Magistrate Froylot.

Ayotnom notes the tracks suggesting a flying creature, perhaps a dragon of some sort. Mak keeps an eye to the sky, not wanting to be surprised by a flying opponent. Rolth notes the dirt on the hands of one of the liontaurs, concluding it’s likely that one that dug up some buried chest. He does not see any messages scrawled in the earth here., nor does he see any chest. Tsak asks the villagers to indicate any nearby farmsteads. He prepares to take point in pursuit of the dinosaurs. Elyas says he also thinks it was a dragon that killed these people. Falco says a prayer for the dead. He says you cannot just leave the bodies here. Wil wonders if it were one creature that killed these people or perhaps a group. He suddenly notices a place where a box may have been dug up.
The villagers will indicate to Tsak the direction of a few other farmsteads, one a couple hours away and another about half a day’s walk. Their sketched map is, well, it’s a little sketchy. At least they’re pretty sure. Mostly. It’s like when you know how to get to your friends house, but explaining it to someone else or drawing them a map in the dirt … Tsak is not confident he can find the places they indicate.
They seem a little unsure about returning to their village without the Petals. They look up at the sky apprehensively. ”Well, we came to lead you here. We think you should come back with us, you know, to talk to Froylot - he’s pretty knowledgeable. I mean, we’ll be fine going back, yeah totally fine, we just think he’ll wanna talk to you and all. You say you think it’s a dragon and not those big lizards? How big of a dragon?” They keep looking up.
Halvatar seems resigned to returning with the villagers, and he’s pretty shaken at seeing these half eaten liontaurs. ”Well, if you’re just gonna let those things go, you should come back with us to see Froylot. But you shoulda killed those things when they were here. They might go eat something else.”
The villagers want you to return with them - they head off back toward the village. Of course, you all came from the Haster place, so the direction they head back is different than the route they brought you here.
Looking around, you don’t see any live cows like you saw a few surviving sheep at the last place. Maybe whatever was here just killed everything. Or maybe the allosauruses killed some in spite of what they said.
Falco wants the bodies buried. Yech - moving the torn up liontaurs looks gross. They seem to be laying here where they were bitten in half, as suggested by the blood spatters against the side of the house in the corral where they lay. Obviously they were killed after they dug something up that is no longer here.
Some want to track the allosauruses - they leave pretty big footprints.

DM Mark - Froylot Thursday November 3rd, 2022 10:10:50 PM Ayotnom can see a pattern in the marks here. He casts a spell and flies into the air. Wil asks the villagers why a liontaur might bury a box? Kiwina wonders a creature would waste his energy attacks making these marks. Tsak wonders about these marks, but his ranger training kicks in and he scans the area for threats or perhaps an ambush. Rolth feels like something is not adding up. Mak dismounts and scouts the area on foot, looking for any additional tracks. Falco finds the riddles and clues to be frustrating. Elyas is confident that Ayotnom will figure these marks out.
The villagers respond to Wil. ”The box? I figured that’s just where he hid some money. You said it looked like he dug it up. If he was offering it to whatever killed him, I guess it didn’t work - the thing must’ve killed him and taken the money anyway.”
As Ayotnom rises intro the air the villagers gasp. Halvatar says, ”Whoa. They can fly?
From his high vantage point, Ayotnom can see something crudely scribed by these marks. It says, "GROVAS SON OF VURM”. Each letter is about 20 ft tall, and written in a different burn type. As he reads it, Ayotnom gets the feeling that this Grovas is showing off, and he wants to strike fear in others. There’s also an arrogance here, assuming any reading it could fly. From this high point, he scans the area, but doesn’t see anything else of note.
Mak’s scouting of the area does show some tracks (and scat) he would expect - some wild pigs and a couple of deer, but nothing more.
Eventually, you continue on your way and after a couple more hours you reach Frog Hollow. The villagers there watch you, wondering what you found though none are willing to interrupt your progress to see Magistrate Froylot. The village believes that this is a great opportunity for the couple, and it offers Haltavar something resembling normalcy, which hopefully over time will allow him to heal from the tragedy that has befallen him. I believe that this couple will show him an abundance of love, which the lad desperately needs right now.
He continues, ”Now, you’ve seen these places where our people were killed. What have you learned? Should we be prepared for more attacks and trouble? Can you stop this?”

Sadly, someone that would waste so much power attacking farmers is likely unhinged. He seemed to be posturing for someone else who can fly -- could flying draw him in? DM Mark - A Scream Outside! Saturday November 5th, 2022 2:57:19 AM Elyas tells Froylot the people should be prepared for more attacks. He says an intelligent and dangerous creautre is behind the attacks and is trying to create fear. He asks Froylot of the name Grovas son of Vurm means anything to him. Falco assures Halvatar that the Petals will deal with whatever killed his family. Tsak describes the six dinosaurs and asks if they are a new threat. Wil mentions a missing treasure box, and asks why such a creature would carve its name in the earth for all to see? Kiwina asks if there is a way to draw this creature out without having to wait until more die. He wonders if the dinosaurs are related to this creature. Mak remains quiet. Ayotnom asks if anyone knows this Vurm or his son. He wracks his brain, but the names don’t trigger anything for him.
Halvatar goes meekly along with two kindly liontaurs that introduce themselves to the boy. They begin gently asking him what sort of food he likes best and what he would like to see and if he likes pets or animals and ….
The villagers respond to Froylot as well with what they saw - the two partial bodies, the lack of any other liontaur bodies, and the dinosaurs feasting on the dead cattle. They also mention how brave and resourceful the Petals were, able to talk to the dinosaurs, their care for the dead, their ability to fly. They are quite impressed with the Petals.
With the mention of the dinosaurs, Froylot will say, ”Yes, yes, sounds like allosauruses. They are uncommon, but are a problem from time to time. They are dangerous but they tend to avoid our settlements. I imagine they may have smelled the dead cattle you mentioned. We need to make people aware of this.”
As the Petals mention the message, he will say, ”I’ve never heard of Grovas before, but the name Vurm is vaguely familiar. Allow me to make a query to the great library.
You watch Froylot write, in an elegant script,
Please send me all you know about the name Vurm.
Froylot
He puts the note in a contraption that kinda looks like a large mailbox. He closes the lid, and the device hums a moment, and then there’s a ding. Froylot indicates that the ding lets him know his note has been sent. At which time he opens the door to show that it is no longer there. A few moments later, the contraption humms again followed by the same ding. Froylot says, ”That was fast!” as he opens the contraption and pulls out a small book. On the cover is written, Vurm, the Many Colored
The old liontaur flips through the pages, reading at an alarmingly fast rate, and in a few minutes he puts the book down and says,
”If we are dealing with the son of this Vurm, and I fail to see how we could be speaking of another, we are dealing with the son of a dragon. The book doesn’t mention any offspring, but, apparently Vurm was, and I assume still is what is sometimes referred to as a rainbow dragon. Personally, I find ‘rainbow dragon’ to be a confusing and imprecise generality. New breed or mixed breed might be a better term. In fact, the sage Calsiras suggested several other names depending on … Oh. Sorry. I got a little off track there.
“We’ll call them rainbow dragons for now. In case you are unaware as to what a rainbow dragon is, which is likely, since they are extremely rare, I will do my best to enlighten you.
“A rainbow combines the abilities of at least two different dragon species. Apparently they can be any combination, though a blend of a chromatic and a metallic would be extremely rare, to the point of being very unlikely, especially since we are dealing with such a rare breed of dragon as is. As I said, rainbows share the abilities of all their species, which means vulnerabilities can in fact be immunities. For example, red dragons are normally immune to fire and vulnerable to cold, whereas a white dragon is immune to cold and vulnerable to fire. So a red and white rainbow would be immune to both cold and fire, and vulnerable to neither, and it would be able to switch back and forth between a cold and fire breath weapon. In appearance, their scales are usually a fairly even blend of all their dragon type colors, though sometimes the coloration appears to be random.
“Now according to this, Vurm was a Red, White, Blue, Black, and Green Rainbow, that terrorized the Sargrass Plains a while back. Apparently he was being driven mad by some force which was located there, and he decided to try to conquer the Wold, starting in the Sargrass Plains. Well, the gods intervened, and a group of adventures from the northern continent were somehow driven way off course when trying to return home from the Wold’s Cradle. This group who call the Tree of Parting home, and name themselves the Tree Wardens, defeated the old worm, and when Vurm begged for mercy, they gave it. Vurm swore he would never again harm another person, except in self defense, and would only hunt in the wilds, as that was the terms to the mercy being shown, and from all accounts, he has kept his word. Most likely out of fear of being hunted down by the Tree Wardens.
“Now I know not how this translates to this Grovas, Vurm’s Son, as the book mentions nothing of offspring, as I’ve said before, but one would assume, based on your findings, that he shares his father’s breath weapons but not his prohibition for killing people. So the question remains, how do you find this fiend?”
As the Petals are trying to decide what to do next, they hear several screams coming from outside. Running outside, they are just in time to see a screaming Haltavar being carried away by a dragon that shimmers in the afternoon sun. You are well aware that they are traveling way too fast for you to catch up, but you do notice that the dragon is flying towards the coast. Gaining altitude as it goes, you would guess it is headed out to sea.
A few liontaurs launch arrows at the beast, but it is too far away.

If they are conscious at that point, he will ask what the dragon said, if anything, as it attacked and carried away the lad. It went to the coast. we will need the Rose to pursue most likely. It should be arriving here soon, right? we sent word to Ramsey to come around and meet us here.
DM Mark - A Scream Outside! Monday November 7th, 2022 8:04:44 PM Kiwina estimates the flying dragon to be huge in size. The centaur checks on the fallen villagers. Rolth snaps into after a moment of stunned silence. He joins Kiwina and channels healing energy. As the two battered liontaurs awake, he asks if the dragon said anything when he took the boy. Rolth queries his friends about what they may know about Vrum. Wil is angry to see the dragon took Halvatar, and he believes this confirms his suspicions that the boy lied about his involvement. Tsak asks Froylot if there is more to Halvatar than meets the eye. He acknowledges that Mak was right about a dragon being involved. Ayotnom suggests returning to The Rose to use their navigation device to go after this creature. Mak runs outside, takes a deep breath as he readies his bow and fires makes a full attack action to loose two cold iron arrows at the fleeing dragon. He’s unsure at that distance if he hit, but he thinks he did not - it’s about 800’ away by the time his arrows took flight. Falco also rushes to the liontaurs and is thankful to see they are only injured. He also channels energy. Elyas casts Fly on himself, but realizes he cannot match this creatures speed. He recalls that the Petals sent word to Ramsey to bring the ship around to this side of the island.
The Petals are relieved and a bit surprised to find that the couple that was with Halvatar are not dead. They are deeply distraught. ”Oh, hasn’t that boy been through enough? To suffer the loss of his family, only to end being eaten by that thing. It’s just too much!”
You will find the town is quite shaken by all this. Most run indoors, some sturdy few rush out with missile weapons. People keep their eyes fixed on the sky expecting some additional attack even as the dragon recedes in the distance.
The old Froylot comes out as well. ”This is deeply troubling. A dragon - that is a fearsome beast indeed. It is good that you Petals were here. Who knows what might have happened?”
“Could there be something special about the boy? Could he even be responsible in some way. Perish the thought. I am not aware of any such connection. Why would you think that So you know something about him that I don’t? What is it you suspect?” His tone is not confrontational. He seems to trust the Petals and is very interested in what they know.
As Ayotnom suggests pursuing the beast, he mentions a device aboard the ship. Froylot asks, ”What is this device? How can you track a dragon? Come back inside, I have some maps that may help. Let’s see what we can do.”
As you go in, Froylot says, ”You know, the likelihood the boy survived is slim to none. But regardless there is always hope. And certainly the beast poses a threat.”
Froylot will pull out some maps, looking for nearby islands or such that might harbor such a beast. [b]”Let’s see, let’s see, where could this creature flee to. It could be a ruse and it maybe up or down the coast. If it’s out to sea, there are a few places perhaps. Hard to know how far it intends to go. There are some places though that seem more likely.”
He points to a few islands, and though he has some charts you're not sure you can best translate these maps into coordinates. How do you proceed?
—-------------------------------------------------- Here is the description of Garmin:
Garmin: This is a brass device composed of gears and dials, and it topped with a directional arrow. The device detects as magic (Divination school.) To use the device, the user must first have correct navigational coordinates. Once those coordinates are entered into the device's dials, the device may be activated by the command phrase, "Garmin, show me the way," spoken in any language. This will cause the device to spring to life, and it will continuously point to the programmed location. It will not avoid obstacles, but the directional arrow will always adjust to pointing directly to the programmed destination. The user will know they have reached the intended destination when the arrow swings around indicating they have passed it.
Skills that may be used to determine the correct coordinates include Knowledge: Geography, Knowledge: History, Survival, Profession: Sailor. The check cannot be made using Take 10 or 20.

Since we seem to be making the effort now, Rolth will sing to inspire Elyas (+1), in addition to asking for help from local sailors (if they know more than Kiwina and Rolth do, both having sailed around the island in the past.) The Magistrate also seems to be a bit of a sage to be consulted as well.
DM Mark - "Didn't that thing on the ship stop working?" Tuesday November 8th, 2022 8:41:10 PM Rolth worries that this dragon may be collecting children. He thinks time may be of the essence. Kiwina suggests perhaps hiding the children in the area. Tsak ponders the dragon’s motivation. Ayotnom wonders if the dragon may himself be a child and is abducting children as possible friends. Mak’s eyes follow the fleeing dragon for a while, trying to note it’s course. He wonders if that navigational device stopped working. Falco adds that perhaps the beast collects children for some benign or nefarious purpose. Wil thinks that Godzilla device is great if it can lead the Petals to the children. He thinks if the dragon wanted to eat the boy, he would have done so. Elyas asks of anyone in the village might be familiar with the island the Petals seek.
To be sure, the navigational device, christened Garmin by the Petals, was a magic item created and used by Ardian, and he was able to use it unerringly. Without him, it is still magical and with the right navigational inputs it is still very useful as a directional aid as it always points toward its programmed target. Once properly set, it makes directional travel much easier.
The Petals work together to determine where to go. Froylot is indeed a sage. Regarding familiarity, he says that he fished these waters with his father as a child. He offers to accompany you on your ship if you think he can help. There is a library of sorts here, and while most things are written in Tauric there are several that can handle this.
Froylot will tell you that he can ask someone he knows that lives near the coast to accompany them. This gives you +10 for a sage, and +10 for a sailor familiar with the area. Froylot’s knowledge will put your DC at 35 (he was a child when he visited this island after all - if it even is the right place.) You have navigational instruments on your ship for another +4.
Froylot grabs a pack he seemed to have ready and asks for help bringing the strange sort of mailbox he used before. Just in case, he will say.
You feared you might move a bit slower with Froylot in tow, but the old taur is surprisingly spry. In about an hour, you make the coast. You see the Rose anchored off shore. Magistrate Froylot takes charge as you reach a small village, and the locals seem quick to obey his orders. Various fishing boats soon shuttle you to the Rose. Pay them if you wish, but none seem to wait for it. Froylot brings along a local fisherman named Drrougl - he’s a gruff sort, but seems to know these waters well. Strangely, these fishermen are not as worried about the mention of a dragon.
Certainly, there is plenty of equipment here if you need anything as you head out - mostly fishing related.
Now you are aboard, looking at your strange device. Froylot is quite taken with the device and asks how it works.

Rolth suggests that Kiwina be the one to activate the Garmin, given his very skilled background as our Captain. With added advantage of a sage, sailor, and instruments, he is sure to steer us right! It doesn't hurt to be sure, so he will suggest that one of the priests offer a guidance spell, why he himself will use his own skill to aid Captain Kiwina. Perhaps others could do the same. He will defer to Elyas or others to explain the Garmin, as they are more astute regarding matters arcane.

Elyas studied the Garmin as much as he was able to when it was used previously, and he puts that knowledge to the test here. Using the info from the maps, Froylot, the navigation tools, and aid from the other Petals, Elyas slowly and carefully uses the device to input some coordinates.

DM Mark - "Didn't that thing on the ship stop working?" d4=4 ; d20=20 ; d20=13 ; Wednesday November 9th, 2022 8:36:19 PM Rolth suggests that Kiwina be the one to activate Garmin. He does what he can to aid Kiwina. Tsak tells the crew of the Rose what’s going on and that they need to face down a dragon to save some children. Mak sees to getting his horse secured aboard the Rose. He asks what course will be set. Falco scurries about helping to get the ship ready. While the crew already has this in hand, Falco finds his sailing skill exceeds many of the crew and his suggestions and actions get an impressed look of approval from Ramsey. Kiwina gives input to Elyas, looking to the mage to handle the navigation instrument. Elyas Wil wanders the deck trying to interest anyone on a coin flipping contest. One sailor is interested, and when Wil wins the flip (50-50 chance and rolled a 4 for you) the sailor congratulates the cleric. Ayotnom asks if the fishing village has a some sort of ballista or crossbow that could be used to launch a spear with a rope attacked. In response to the Ayotnom’s question, the fishermen laugh. ”By Domi’s tail, what sorta things you think we go fishin for?” He does not see any such weapons about.
Froylot and Drrougl give their input, Rolth and Kiwina help, and Elyas uses the navigation instruments at hand tries to help set the device. It turns out that Elyas is actually a rather skilled sailor himself. Garmin whirrs to life as it did before and an arrow points out to sea.
Ramsey reports to Captain Kiwinna that the ship is ready to sail. At Kiwina’s direction, the sails are set. As the wind fills the sails, the ropes and the mast creek and the ship is soon underway. The ship courses through the water. The skies are a bit overcast so the salt breeze is bracing as you go. Mak climbs to the crows nest.
The crew keep nervously looking up, but Ramsey barks enough orders to keep them distracted. Sort of. They’re nervous. Froylot and Drrougl however look quite excited to be on the ship.
Soon, the sun is beginning to set as an island comes into sight. Mak calls this out to those on deck. Elyas notices that Garmin’s arrow remains trained on this island, and a slight tack to the right shows the arrow shift, confirming their destination.
The island is small yet densely forested. There is nothing spectacular about the island. In fact, it is the kind of island you can sail past everyday for a year, and still have no desire to investigate it, yet it is clear that is where Garmin is leading. There is a beach area between some larger rocks that might be a good landing point for a smaller boat, though you don’t see any ships or dwellings.
The crew is tense. It will be dark in about an hour or so. Ramsey begins lighting lanterns on the Rose.

That would help the Rose and her brave but precious crew stay safe while we go ashore. Some of us, myself included, can also swim to shore separately, to minimize the possibility of an ambush snaring us all. What other plans or preparations should we make, in case this leads to battle with the dragon? We know that it has elemental breath weapons of several sorts, and can fly. Do folks have spells prepared that can help deal with that? Not that we should necessarily go straight to fighting when talking might be of use, but probably best to plan ahead." DM Mark - The Island Thursday November 10th, 2022 8:50:20 PM Kiwina asks if the Petals want to make for shore now as it is getting dark? Rolth advises Ramsey to hold off on the lights to make sure the Rose will be less of a target in the dark. He advises going ashore now and using the Folding Boat to keep the Rose and her crew and guests safe. Tsak advises a stealthy approach to gather information first, perhaps landing those that can see in the dark first. Ayotnom says he cannot see in the dark and should not be part of the initial group. Mak suggests that everyone go ashore now and set up camp, and let the Rose pull back to safety. Then those that can see in the dark can do some reconnaissance. Falco offers to scout, though he agrees that all should go ashore together. Wil is all for going now, and he asks what spells to prepare.
Ramsey is quick to douse any lanterns than have been lit. He keeps his voice low as he gives orders. Froylot and his friend wish the Petals well. Froylot thanks them for allowing him to come this far, and it has been some time since he’s been out to sea, let alone seeking adventure!
The Folding Boat is brought out, and there are two forms it can take - the Petals opt for the larger version that can hold up to 15 people and has oars to use. Soon, they are all aboard, and they make their way ashore in the early dark of the evening. In the waning twilight, they can just make out the beach well enough to reach the island. They fold up the boat.
As you look around, those that can see in the dark may notice the following: Perception DC 23:Highlight to display spoiler: {This area may have been a small enclave of some sort once, maybe fishermen. You limited evidence of where structures stood some time ago, long since weathered and rotted away.}
Close to the beach area, a dark, dense forest looms before you. Those that can see in the dark notice a path of sorts, but it is overgrown and you know unless you have the woodland stride or some such ability, travel speed will be cut in half due to the difficult terrain. The path is not much better than an animal trail, and it obviously doesn’t get much traffic.
The waves lap gently at the shore and the nearby rocks. A cool breeze blows off the island and you can smell the earthy forest. It’s otherwise very quiet, except for some bird calls and an occasional animal cry.
It’s kinda nice here. Except for the fact that there may be a homicidal dragon nearby.
Remember, the spells you currently have are those you would have prepared before your voyage, as you have not had time to recharge your spells since then.
Good spot to land, there used to be some fishermen here, though not recently. There were a few huts. I'll look for a well or other water source. Those who can see should fan out. We may be able to make a lean-to for short term shelter.
Tsak has a good look around for fresh water and also for any caves in the vicinity along the beach. He also ventures a couple of hundred feet up all the tracks to see where they lead.
(OOC Tsak has 'woodland stride' and 'favored terrain- forest' so he moves around pretty easily and doesn't leave any trace or tracks.)

AS we approach and land on the island, Rolth looks for signs of habitation (e.g., smoke rising, startled flocks of birds) and prominent geographical features (e.g., hills, mountains, deep inlets) that might provide a lair for a dragon.
He tries to recall how large the dragon seems compared to the young taur it was carrying off, which might also suggest where we should look for it. (I think Kiwina looked in the moment, but don't recall an answer).
Rolth also tries to recall the size of the four kinds of scorch marks that we saw on two occasions, to give some idea of how wide our battle formation might need to be to avoid all getting caught in one blast.
Turning to Elyas, he asks, "My learned friend, what do you know of the abilities and weaknesses of dragons?"
Once on shore and the advance scouts have taken a look up the trails, Rolth suggests in a messaged whisper, "Let us fold up the boat, move a short distance into the cover of the vegetation, erase our tracks on the beach, and make a cold camp for the night. In his off hand he clutched a potion of Darkvision so that it would be ready as needed. Otherwise he stood as close to a tree trunk as he could and still get a decent view of the twilight sky.

DM Mark - "Are we trying some dark operation here?" d20=14 ; d20=19 ; Friday November 11th, 2022 8:02:00 PM Ayotnom casts Message on his friends to facilitate communication. Tsak notices the evidence of prior habitation in this area some time ago. He looks around for a freshwater supply nearby, and checks the trails here. Rolth looks at the island as the Petals approach in the waning twilight. He can tell the island rises quite a bit in the middle.. He would judge the dragon to have been huge in size, and he asks Elyas about dragons. He suggests a camp in the dark vegetation and a wait until morning. Elyas knows something about dragons in general, but not this one in particular. He casts Darkvision on himself. Falco agrees with moving out of the open, though he hopes he can Kiwina calls on his ancestral spirits asking what will happen if the Petals set out to explore in the dark. He get no response, suggesting either there is no good or bad effect to this or that the spell failed. (I rolled for that elsewhere.) Wil wants to light to aid him, but Rolth asks him not to as Tsak scouts ahead. Mak does not care much for the dark and does his best to not get hurt as he watches the darkened sky.
(A note about the Message spell. I don’t want to nerf this, however this cantrip does have some limitations. Recipients can only speak to Ayotnom in response to messages he whispers to them. There is a limit on the range, but it’s pretty big. And there is a duration limitation, so you will need a direct line of effect each time Ahyotnom recasts this spell. However, once cast, the message spell will work around barriers.)
There are still clouds in the dark sky, but a full moon provides a bit of light for those low-light vision to get around in the open without banging into stuff or tripping. Even humans do alright in this if they move slowly. The dark forest ahead is another matter - there is no light penetration in there. This is not an impediment for Tsak, as he can see in the dark.
Tsak He looks around for a freshwater supply nearby, but only sees the remnant of a small creek that mostly seeps through the sandy/rock soil here. He sees a few small game trails, but his trained eye notes a more substantial trail. Though now overgrown, he thinks this might have likely been a trail used by inhabitants here. His skills let him move with ease through the vegetation, but he knows others will need to hack/push their way through and will move at about half speed. He ventures about 100’ in before returning, and he can see this path continues on.
Elyas knows that dragons can see in the dark. They are tough, hard to hit, and can deal out a lot of damage. They have a breath weapon that usually deals some sort of energy damage, and typically have some resistance to that energy type and to magic. Many dragons are able to cast spells. Dragons tend to hoard treasure in their lair, and have very good senses within that lair. Some can assume humanoid form. They are smart, arrogant and greedy. They can also be kind, beneficent and protectors of what they see at the lesser races.
At Rolth’s suggestion, you move into the dense vegetation to find a place to sleep unseen. I assume you all have some sort of bedroll as you prepare to rest. I’ll assume a watch based on character posting order, so a short watch for each person.
Sleeping in this area is much less comfortable than on the open beach, and those that do not have darkvision will need help or some sort of light source as they make camp. Make a DC 10 Fortitude save to be able to sleep in here due to the bugs and branches you contend with. If you have the endurance feat, you can ignore this. If you fail this save, you are unable to recover/change spells and you will have the fatigued condition (though you would retain any uncast spells from the day before.) If you decide to move back to the open beach, you lost 4 hours of rest and will need to rest most of the morning to avoid fatigue and recover spells.

Ayotnom being a minotaur trained to be both a fighter and a duelist is no stranger to hardship and has no trouble falling asleep in the grass. As for how he gets around camp in the dark, he knows the light cantrip and will use it sparingly so as not to give away their position. Also Ayotnom now has a name for his rapier. His rapier's name is Revlis Kciuq.

Tsak has a taste of the creek water to see if it's fit for consumption. It seems fine so he digs a small depression closeish to camp that he can use to refil canteens as required. Making his way thru the plant life wasn't too hard, but it has taken it out of him so he sleeps well (Endurance) and takes a later watch than normal. Whilst not in a hurry to face a dragon, Tsak is aware that this island was a bit of a guess and the dragon could be somewhere else entirely. He thinks they should keep moving in case they guessed wrong. The animal trail is the best track they have off the beach. Potentially he and Kiwina should follow it for a ways, they could do so quite a bit quicker than the party as a whole, and see where it leads them. Perhaps the rest could make their way along the beach to see what's what? He reports his findings and thoughts to the Petals the next morning over a cold breakfast of cured meat and oat biscuits. Tsak is quite impressed with Ayotmon's ability to come up with difficult words. He can't quite get his tongue around the rapier's name and decides he's going to call it 'radar' for short.

DM Mark - Halt. Who Goes There? d20=3 ; Monday November 14th, 2022 8:08:35 PM Ayotnom uses a Light spell sparingly, cautious in where and how he displays it so as not to draw attention in the dark. Tsak digs into the shallow creekbed to get enough water for the party to use. Falco will cast Purify Food and Drink to make sure this water is safe to drink. Everyone else beds down in the dense vegetation. The Petals prove adept at sleeping in an uncomfortable environment.
As you wake, the day dawns bright, clear and brisk. Nothing bothered you during the night. Spellcasters memorize and pray for spells. There is a trail leading from your beach area into the interior of the island, rising a bit as it goes. You can tell this was once a broad path, but has become overgrown over the last several years, and is now little more than a game trail. There are occasional side game trails, but these would be more difficult to follow.
Tsak has little trouble navigating this trail, moving with ease through the vegetation. The going is rough for anyone without the Woodland Stride ability, so for others, the area is difficult terrain, and you will travel pushing and hacking your way through.
After about an hour of hacking your way through the brush, you come across a clearing. About 60’ away is a big cave-like hole leading into a rocky outcropping. A couple of hunched figures are near this, sitting at a barrel top, playing some game of dice. They are drinking from tankards, and there is a small cask nearby.
As you emerge from the vegetation, they notice you. They are winged, bipedal creatures with scaly skin, reminiscent of kobolds in shape, but medium sized.
One wipes his mouth with the back of his arm as he barks at you in common, ”HEY! Hey, who are you? What’s your business here? We weren’t told you were coming.”
They assume an intimidating posture, but do not attack.

DM Mark - We're Here To See The Boss. d20+21=38 ; d20+19=29 ; Tuesday November 15th, 2022 8:45:29 PM Ayotnom looks at these guys. Highlight to display spoiler: {He’s pretty sure these are creatures called wyvarans. They are kind of a kobold-dragon hybrid. He’d guess they have darkvision and can fly. Looks like they could attack with that tail as well. They tend to be territorial and loyal.} Rolth tries to bluff them, telling them he’s here to see “the boss”, and suggesting there may be payment involved. Wil and Kiwina chime in on the ruse to assist Rolth. Tsak moves up 30’ to be close enough to try to intimidate one of these creatures. Falco tries to remain hidden behind the others. Mak stands behind Tsak and draws his bow. Elyas also tries to stand back a bit. He looks at the creatures. Highlight to display spoiler: {He’s heard of these creatures before. They’re called wyvarans. They are kind like a kobold, but bigger with wings.}
The creatures regard Rolth. One replies, "Yer here to see the boss, eh. Tell me, which boss is that? Who are you here to see and who sent you? We’d a’ been told if we were to let anyone through to see them. Why don't hyou throw down them weapons right there - we'll keep 'em safe for you.” They don’t reach for their weapons just yet though. Or maybe they just don’t want to spill their beer, which they seem to like more than you. Or maybe they’re proficient with tankards. They also each have couple axes and a flail.
Then Tsak steps forward, trying to cow one of them. (Intimidation is good against a single opponent.) One of them takes a step back, finding Tsak a bit intimidating. For a moment. The other says, ”Hey, watch your attitude there orc boy or we’ll shut you down.” Then they both try to intimidate Tsak. (One rolls a 38 against Tsak, and the intimidated one rolls less which doesn’t matter since these don’t stack. DC against Tsak would be 10+11+1, so Tsak will be shaken for 4 rounds.)
So right now, Tsak is 30’ away from them. Ayotnom, Rolth, and Wil are 60’ away. Falco, Mak and Elyas are 65’ away.
I guess I better work up a map, just in case.

Tsak draws his sword (as a free action 'quick draw') and attacks the flying lizard that attacked him. The thing is strong and it's blows would have felled a younger less experienced Tsak, but he stays on his feet and gives something back.

The attack came fast and Mak despite his fleetness and agility couldn't avoid the attack. Fortunately his new armor resisted some of that brutal attack but with an opponent on either side of him he was exposed. Mak moved around behind the Wyvaran to his left as he drew his rapier and turned back to strike at the winged creature. Using Tsak's position to his advantage Mak lunged with the sword.
Applied Mak's DR1 to both attacks, so he only took 21 HP. Drawing his sword as a free action during his move. His AC while moving is 39 due to mobility.

(His shaken condition allows only a single move or attack action and I think he is still shaken this round and the next? He started at 4 rounds of being shaken.) Mak moves and attacks the shaken Wyvaran. He scores a critical hit on the thing for 26 damage. (His armor only protects against attack, not the magical energy damage.) The two Wyvarans move 5 feet to flank Tsak.
Wyvaran 1 attacks Tsak. He hits 3 times with his vicious flail for 13, 13, and 18. With each attack, there is a flash of energy that causes additional damage of 6, 6, and 6. This damages the Wyvaran too for 5, 1, and 6. Finally, he makes a shield bash against Tsak for 10 more damage.

Well that's just dandy, Tsak won't be on his feet for much longer. Before he even has time to thank Wil for a heal the winged lizard lays into the ranger and just about flattens him. Ayotnom casts a spell and moves up. Tsak strikes back, but his blow goes wide and he misses. Wil attempts to cast a spell on Tsak, which provokes an attack from the shaken Wyvaran. He hits for 14 damage, and there is a flash of energy that causes Wil an additional 8 damage, and Wil falls to the ground. This damages the Wyvaran too for 1 point. Since Wil was damaged while trying to cast he was damaged while casting his spell Wil must make a DC 35 concentration check or the spell is lost. Will is dying at -7 hp and must make a DC 10 CON check or lose another point. Mak takes a 5’ step and attacks the shaken Wyvaran, and hits twice for 31 damage. Falco casts a spell and moves up to heal Tsak for 32 points of damage. Kiwina lashes out at the Wyvaran near him, hitting twice for 22 damage. Elyas fires off a couple of Scorching Rays, one at each of the Wyvarans. This seems to damage them.
Wyvaran 1 attacks Tsak. He hits Tsak with his first two hits for 12 and 17. With each attack, there is a flash of energy that causes additional damage of 8 and 12. This damages the Wyvaran too for 5 and 5. Tsak falls to the ground at -2 hp. Tsak is dying at -2 hp and must make a DC 10 CON check or lose another point.
Wyvaran 1 makes next final attack against Rolth, hitting for 13 damage and a flash of 2 energy damage. Then the Wyvaran winces as he takes 5 more points from the flash. Finally, he makes a shield bash against Rolth for 9 more damage.
Unfortunately for the Wyvaran, this damage kills him. The Wyvarans might conclude that vicious weapons seem pretty great until you use them.
The Wyvaran 2 snarls, ”Another healer. I’ll kill you too.” as he attacks Falco. He hits AC 25, 23, and 19 for 13, 13, and 16 damage. With each attack, there is a flash of disruptive energy that causes additional damage of 6, 7, and 6 to Falco. This damages the Wyvaran too for 3, 5, and 4. Finally, he makes a shield bash (AC 32) against Falco for 8 more damage.
Then, with a shriek, two more Wyvarans charge out of the cave flying and smash into Kiwina! Both attacks hit the centaur for 16 and 16 damage, and cause a disruptive energy flash for 8 and 5. This also damages the Wyvarans for 4 damage each.

Mak sheathes his rapier and then draws his bow as he moves back. He fires at one of the Wyvarans but misses. (In the future, drawing a weapon and sheathing a weapon are both separate move actions, and only drawing a weapon can be done in conjunction with an actual move.) Elyas has had enough and casts Chain Lightning on all three, and all three jerk a bit as electricity arcs among them. W2 and W3 manage to save for half damage, but W4 is not so lucky. Kiwina moves a bit and swings, hitting once for 7 damage slicing the creature’s arm.. Tsak calls on his orcish lineage and manages to stay on his feet! He cures himself for a bit of damage. (For simplicity, I moved Tsak a bit to make things easier.) Rolth strikes out at the Wyvaran nearest him, hitting twice for 16 and 13 damage. With a snarl, the creature says, ”You are not worthy to stand before them!” as he falls to the ground, its head nearly severed from its body. Ayotnom charges one of the new Wyvarans, hitting it for 6 damage, cutting one of its wings. Falco stumbles back, healing himself.
The two remaining Wyvaran let out a squawk and one says, ”Aaargh, for the fallen!”
Wyvaran 3 Ayotnom to be the easier target since he has no armor. He strikes at the monk, and is a bit surprised when he misses twice. Ayotnom is hit for 13 damage and an additional 5 energy damage. This energy hurts the Wyvaran also for 5. Then it hits Ayotnom for 9 more damage with a shield bash.
The Wyvaran 4 also attacks Ayotnom. He hits with its vicious flail for 13 and 11 damage. With each attack, there is a flash of disruptive energy that causes additional 3 and 5 damage. This damages the Wyvaran too for 1 and 1. Finally, he makes a shield bash against the minotaur for 9 more damage. Then it takes a 5’ step.

Turning away from Mak was a mistake and the duelist archer smiled as the wyvarans ran past him. With a hand lightly running across the arrows in his quiver, Mak plucked two and loaded them onto his bow. Three fingers on the string with a finger between the two arrows and three on the bow in the same configuration, Mak pulled and released. He knew he only had about a fifty percent chance of hitting the creature, but he needed the extra effort to make certain his shot counted. Zing, the first two arrows sped off together and buried themselves deeply into the wyvarans hide. A rapid reload and another arrow shot out to embed itself alongside the first two. Mak was on a roll as the speed from Elyas spell allowed him to fire again, but the arrow went too low and buried itself in the ground some yards away. Mak was ready and could fire two more arrows, but he elected to just fire one more even though he knew he'd probably miss. He was just firing too many too quickly to be very accurate. His last arrow was a lucky shot as the Wyvaran stepped into the arrows path and he literally winged it. With 1 arrow in reserve this round he took a five foot step forward.

Kiwina had engaged the wyvaran he'd been shooting and Mak caught the centaurs look of concern for Elyas, so the young noble archer swiveled and took aim at the fourth wyvaran in this encounter. Previously he'd wanted to take them down as quickly as possible, but his targeted shots were missing too much. He decided instead to go by the old axiom of firing at the center of mass. He'd be more likely to hit, but the damage would be more random from the imprecise shots.
Again Mak drew two arrows and nocked them against the string as he aimed at the wyvaran's thorax and fired. He felt justified when the twin arrow attack hit. He drew and fired again but the third arrow went high. Mak had very little time as Elyas danced about trying to keep from being hit so he fired again with a little better luck as he brought another to bear in his final attempt before the creature set up the wizard for another strike. Mak wasn't hopeful, but he had to try and his perseverance paid off as the arrow bit into the wyvaran's thigh.
"Hey Kobold breath!" Mak yelled across the way. "Pick on someone your own size!"
