DM Steve -- It's the Festival and there'll be dancing!
Wednesday February 1st, 2023 10:24:40 PM

Mortimer thinks all of the potions and scrolls should be kept as party treasure. He intends to keep the petrified squirrel (which Drack hadn’t mentioned).
Torrynashkabbeth thinks Manolo claimed the boots. She worries that she is still in debt to the others over the bow. She plans to practice dancing.
Ash would prefer money to any of the items they have gathered.
Loryn basks in the enjoyment of his meal. He takes a look at the master bedroom, and finds it feels wrong. He plans to check out the festival.
Gnubert enjoys the meal very much. He plans to go visit the local temple.
After his walk, Drack catches everyone up on the lack of events in town, and brings up the splitting of the treasure they have gathered.
Manolo and Mole are quiet.

The idea of sharing use of the bag of holding comes up, as does Loryn’s desire to keep it himself.

Before people get much into their plans, Grog arrives at the boarding house. Some of the party has been in the area a long time, even grown up just outside of town, and others are relatively new. Grog has realized that it is time for the festival. He tells them this will be another chance to learn about the town if they want to participate. He explains: “The Festival of Renewal takes place every year in the month of Flowers. Today it is held to remember our heritage – it used to be held to infuse the Sentinels with the prayers of the visitors so that they could protect the kingdom from dragons. In the day, attendance was a civic duty, and thousands of people would come. Today the crowds are much smaller – I see only a few hundred this year. Prior to the actual event, townsfolk rehearse for the parades and set up the rides. Wandering entertainers will be here to perform. And food and wine will be plentiful. You should find a remembrance service, where some of the locals lead a tour to the Sentinel. If a big enough group really gets into it, the Sentinel might glow. The town respects and feels proud of the part we used to play in protecting the kingdom.”

Grog asks the group to promise to take part in the festival tomorrow. Once they have answered, he leaves, and everyone is free to get on with their plans.

Gnubert finds that Noma at the temple of Wardd is rather busy at the moment, preparing for the next day. He may stay, but she will not be able to talk.

As she walked to the festival grounds Torryn ruminated. Grog has 'asked' them to 'promise' to attend. The two things really didn't mix well for her. Basically, he practically ordered their attendance. Yet as much as Torryn loathed being told what to do, this didn't irk THAT much. He should have just asked nicely and left it that. The THWAPS were a decent lot; if they said they'd attend, they would. Promises were unnecessary. Of course Torryn wouldn't have missed it for anything! There'd be dancing. That mandated her participation, not just attendance. Still her mind swirled. Was Grog expecting trouble? Again? Was that why the promises were elicited? She tutted to herself. Even if there was to be trouble, he should still have simply ASKED. She never asked Spot to PROMISE to carry her with consideration. She just asked and trusted her to do the rest. Maybe Grog didn't trust them - or HER more likely! Well, Torryn had to concede that she was rather flighty and prone to distraction. sadly, no promise was going to alter that. As she strolled along immersed in such considerations, she saw a purple emperor fluttering over a dry stone wall and just like that her ruminations ended. She beamed in delight and broke into a skipping trot, eager to see what was already in place in the exhibition field.

He hands the bag of holding to Loryn, He takes a bulls strength potion, and hands the other to Torry, and then hands the 3 healing potions and 2 Alchemists fires to Mortimer to distribute as they were wanted.

Another year has already gone by and the festival is back. It was a favorite time of year for Loryn, everyone was just generally in a better mood. And of course there was all kinds of treats and drinks and tips and tricks to swap and steal. He decides he would look into entering some type of baking or cooking contest this year under Minerva's Boarding House. But first to see what Grog was asking about....

Loryn listens with a smile on his face as Grog tells, albeit in very brief words, on the origin of the festival The gnome nods along, he was fully intending to attend, having no intention of ever missing it and the ask for a promise does not occur to him, that Grog is talking to him as well as the others. After an odd pause, well to others perhaps as the thought dawns on him that Grog is indeed talking to him, the gnome bobs his head about and beams out,
"Of course, of course. The Festival of Renewal is a wondrous time and there is nothing that should keep us away"

Loryn makes a quick round to see if there will be any cooking or baking contests and also an early purchases of fresh garden or meat products to cook that evening for the crew.

He grabs a small keg of ale and some cooked meats and heads out of the town. He finds the cave they discovered a few months earlier. He finds a nice spot in the cave to sit and drink.

Mortimer Margrave (Stephen F.): ac:18/13/15. temp/hp:34/34.  d20+12=30 ;
Thursday February 2nd, 2023 10:11:18 PM

As other talk about selling loot and attending local festivities, which Mortimer is in agreement with, he has yet to leave the dinner table. Even though his physique is quite gaunt, his gullet, on the other hand, is a bottomless pit. While the others have retired from the table, he is still lost in the bliss of the feast; eating whatever remains or left behind unfinished. While in this euphoric state, he is making quite a slob of himself. The excesses of juices and wine run down from his face. He is surprised by what is about to ...

'HAVE SOME DIGNITY, CHILD! A LITTLE DECORUM ... YOU ACCURSED TROGLODYTE!' Before him stands Lord Ambrose Margrave. He slams his hands down on the table in anger and protest. The force rattles the table and topples Mortimer's wine goblet.

The shock snaps Mortimer back into his chair. His eyes go wide as they dart about the room. Lord Ambrose is no longer there. Disappeared into thin air, as if never having been there at all. This was odd, he had never seen the nobleman in the waking world; only in his dreams. Yet the wine from his spilled goblet still runs across the table.

If anyone looks his direction, Mortimer nervously apologizes, "Beg your pardons, I 'ad a little whoopsie!" (Bluff: 30)

As he continues to look around, he is startled by another dark presence out of the corner of his eye. Too close for comfort, the one known as Mortidecai (also from his dreams) is stooped over by his right ear. He says, 'No need to listen to the big guy ... I always preferred the company of dirty, working class boys,' he whispers with a gleeful chortle.

His eyes widen and his skin turns a whiter shade of pale. "No, no, no way ... NO!" Thankfully Mortidecai had also disappeared. He immediately takes hold of a loose end of table cloth and begins cleaning his face and hands. He politely excuses himself from the room and he rushes off to take a bath.

Mortimer drops his goblet while thinking about the festivities. He excuses himself to clean up.
Loryn fully intends to attend the Festival. He sees if he can perhaps join a cooking contest.
Torrynashkabbeth is miffed at Grog’s request, but of course will attend the Festival.
Manolo selects some of the gear. He looks into whether he can help at the Festival.
Gnubert would be honored to attend the Festival. He asks the others about paying to stay at the boarding house.
Mole passes on the gear they found. He heads to the tavern, then leaves with a keg to avoid the crowds.
Drack heads for the catacombs to make a quick sale.
Ash thinks the Festival sounds like a good way to learn about the town.

The usual staff was +1 quarterstaff with a head shaped like the head of a snake – when carried by a cleric or druid following a god of the Wold, the eyes shed a soft light for 20’ that is blue (LG, NG, or CG wielder), green (LN, N, or CN), or red (LE, NE, or CE). For the catacombs you should simply treat it as a +1 quarterstaff. It is not intended to be a fate item.

Inquiries in the morning let the group know that the start of the Festival focuses on history – there are no contests until the evening and following day. Instead, they get caught up in a tour being led by Liram and Nirma – ladies they have not dealt directly with before. (Liram and Nirma own of the House of the Crystal Sphere in town – they tell fortunes and maintain a shrine to the Three Crones outside of town.)

Liram and Nirma are retelling stories of the Sentinels that they heard growing up, since only Grog is old enough to remember what the festival was like back when the dragons were still alive. Liram and Nirma tell about the Sentinels being Teucri artifacts that kept the dragons away generations ago. They explain that the head of the Sentinel that the group is going to see was stolen by the Sahuagin and retrieved by the famous Grey Dragons adventuring party.

You may make a local knowledge skill check:
DC 10 – Highlight to display spoiler: {They are glossing over many of the details of the story.}
DC 15 – Highlight to display spoiler: {You are standing in the battlefield where sahuagin once attacked festival-goers to steal the Sentinel head.}
DC 20 – Highlight to display spoiler: {The Grey Dragons did not just retrieve the head. When they returned with it the whole town was dead and they faced Marteus. Grog and Edwina told you about Koshe Marr before you went adventuring with Grog – despite the town being restored by the end, that tale probably unsettles the tourists.}

(I assumed that Torryn was long gone by the time the spilled drink incident happened. Mortimer eats so much more than does she.)

History really wasn't her thing. It wasn't that she didn't like a good yarn. A good raconteur could make even the driest subjects fascinating. It was simply that she seemed incapable of remembering any of it. So, she listened politely to the tales of yore and did her best not to fidget too much. It was a losing battle and soon her mind wandered - to dance steps and then whether Spot could 'dance' and then whether she could incorporate weapons into her dance. Apparently that was a thing. It wasn't Torryn's thing - yet.

All told it was a pleasant experience, but not for the reasons that most others attributed to it.

(History roll completely fluffed :)

As Mortimer gives himself a proper scrubbing in the tub, he is thankful no others are able to see or hear the ghosts of his bloodline. "I guess I can expect them ta haunt my waking hours as well," he grumbles. Afterwards when he begins trying to groom himself, he finds himself almost completely incompetent. No matter what he does, he looks like a street rat in nice clothes. He considers seeing one of those fancy barbers. He's never graced their doorway ... why bother when you can cut your own hair with a dagger for free.

(Knowledge [Local]: 17.)

Mortimer joins his friends at the Festival. After listening to Liram and Nirma retelling of the stories, Mortimer can't help but mention, "Those two are skimpin' on the details a bit. More to the story, there is."

He goes on to add, "By the ways, these festival grounds are where those sahuagin bastards raided the Hamlet and stole the Sentinel Head. Lots of blood spilled here, there is. Don't like comin' here at night, when the veil is thin."

Loryn is not quite sure what to make of Mortimer and the man's apparent delusions. So far they seem harmless enough, but it was something to keep an eye on going forward. At the wrong time or in front of the wrong people, it could prove inconvenient at best. For now, a simply raised bushy eyebrow and a confirming glance about that there were indeed no others around would do.

"Gnubert. There is no one to pay. The rooms and board are paid by the town for 'services rendered' You will surely hear some talk over the next couple of days about, ill times and other folksy superstition and when something actually rears its head. We are here and render them services to the town. Now let's take a tour, shall we?"

Loryn had lived here for only a couple decades and hadn't gotten around to learning much of the local stories and as a result, most of what he always heard was new. This time around, though, Mortimer as about, and he DID know some of this stuff. Listening he has his own reply to Mortimer's knowledge drop

Drack realizes that the area has a number of shrines that folks take care of periodically, but the only place he is aware of that routinely has someone in attendance is the Chapel of Wardd. The Keep might be a better place for locking something up. Wardd maintains notions about “finding” things. (OOC: The DM would like a slight delay before dealing with the evil items, )

The crowd appreciates the additional details from Mortimer and Loryn, although some are alarmed by the suggestion that ogres could attack. Nirma assures them, ”Why, this very group of adventurers fought off the ogres he is referring to. And don’t forget that we have our own half-ogre, Grog.”

The group reaches the coast where the Sentinel stands on a slightly raised base. The sentinel is an ogre-sized stone and metal statue, looking out to sea. It is humanoid, but with a few reptilian and avian characteristics. Either it was not highly detailed or it has eroded. The head is of the same make as the remainder, although from the story it must be a separate piece placed on the neck. The head alone would weigh about 500 pounds.

In an amphitheater behind the Sentinel, Agatha and Noma Sparklescheme provide a re-enactment of the ceremony that was once used to charge the Sentinels every year. Liram and Nirma describe how during the ceremony the field they are in – gesturing to the large open hillside behind the Sentinel as it faces out to sea – would have been full of people. The real ceremony is no longer needed now that the dragons are gone, but the entire audience helped to recharge the Sentinel when it was. An explosion of color would erupt from the Sentinel statue and streams of rainbow colors would pour forth and divide and divide again until there are enough that one struck each person. As the rainbows extended a feeling of extreme well-being would come over each of the people, followed by a giving and taking of strength. When it ended, the sentinel statue would be full of vibrance and all but look alive.

Torryn felt sure that it was probably quite a sight in its day, but that was a long time ago and she really wasn't one for history. Consequently she wasn't really paying that much attention to the stories. There were gulls to watch and the distant drama of sea and sky. Sometimes the clouds could be very dramatic and inspirational.

She fidgeted. Surely they were going to stop talking soon and then she could go have some fun. The greased pig thing wasn't THAT much fun. How was she supposed to look sensational for the dancing if she was covered in dirt? Maybe they'd have some different competitions this year. She wouldn't bet on that though. Windhorn was a traditional place that did its best to embrace the past and resist change - or so it seemed to her.

All in all, unlike other members of THWAPS, she really wasn't paying much attention to anything, lost as she was in speculation and reverie.

Drack rolls his eyes once again at Loryn’s use of THWAPS. “Enough with the THWAPS thing. It’s a terrible name, and if you continue I’m just going to make up my own name and tell everyone that’s who we are. I think you are just doing it to annoy me at this point. Come up with a real name.”

Drack will follow along with the others, but doesn’t plan to partake in any games and distract himself of what else is happening. One thing he picked up while guarding caravans was if you were distracted, you weren’t prepared. Unprepared warriors tend to be casualties.

Loryn tries his best to look shocked at Dracks comment and even begins to formulate a response about how he did not even realize that the naming convention used could be shortened in such a way, but he simply can't. With tears welling in his eyes and his knees going weak, Loryn lets go a rolling laugh that prevents him from standing still. The joke had been played out and he nods his head in assurance that he will abide with the paladin.

At the ceremony, Agatha's stern look does strike him. There is more to this than a simple re-enactment. Agatha had been called witch on occasion and the sorcerer was beginning to wonder more than just a little if she did indeed have a blood pact with a power. He quietly elbows Mortimer to draw his attention and whispers,

"Norma is looking for something, do you note any faint colors about?"

Manolo is quiet.
Ash notices the energy around the statue.
Loryn is shocked at Drack’s comment. . . until he can’t hold the laughter in. He is surprised at how serious Agatha is about this.
Torrynashkabbeth begins to get fidgety. The history lesson doesn’t grab her, and he mind wanders to fun things.
Mortimer doesn’t notice anything, but doesn’t want to miss out. Finally, he sees it.
Gnubert wonders if what he saw means there’s still danger.
Mole continues to stay apart.
Drack takes some offense at Loryn’s name for the group. He plans not to be distracted, and wonders if they should be paying more attention to the conduct of the ceremony.

When the re-enactment is over, Noma starts working the crowd in the manner of a priestess of Wardd – offering contests of chance to those who want to test their luck. ”Test your luck and be lucky, as our adventuring friend said. Exercise that luck to keep it strong.” Noma wins slightly more than she loses. ”Mortimer, care to dice? A gold piece against what’s in my pouch?”

Liram and Nirma continue talking about the town’s history and what it was like to watch the dragons fly in to test the Sentinels each year. With the distraction provided by Noma, their audience has dwindled and no one pays much attention when folks wander away.

Agatha gives Gnubert a smile before answering him. ”It doesn’t mean the statues need to be charged, but it does mean they can be. If enough people take part.”

It was such a nice day. She was sure there'd be some music soon.

As they moved back to the fairground area, she walked backwards in front of Manolo. In truth, it was more of a skip than a walk her excitement was almost palpable as she smiled broadly. "So, what do you want to do first?" Her long, silvery hair sparkled, flashes of light catching the ends.

Torryn was pleased that matters seemed to be settling down. She didn't want to go to the keep and answer questions. There would be music soon. She was sure that they really didn't need her tagging along as well. besides, someone needed to stay in case something else happened. She smiled, believing that she'd be able to stay at the fair.

Monday February 13th, 2023 10:12:30 PM

Manolo agrees with Gnubert.
Torrynashkabbeth hopes someone will explain what’s happening. After following along, she realizes things have settled down.
Mortimer is finding this uncomfortable. He has been on the other side of the conversation before.
Ash keeps his spell ready, although he thinks the elf understands her position.
Gnubert tells the elf that they will take her to the local authorities, and points her towards the Bearclaw Keep.
Loryn isn’t sure that the effort is needed, but backs up Gnubert’s plan. He also tells Noma she needs to come.
Drack agrees with the others that they should go to the keep.
Mole has not rejoined the group, off somewhere enjoying a nap.

The party find Dorata manning the keep this day. Phaedra and Borad are out among the crowds, and Theobald will be working the night. When they explain the situation to her, Dorata tells them that she will want statements from Noma and the elf in any case, and Gnubert if he wants to make one. However, she’s not sure what to make of the argument. If the group wants, she can keep the elf here until Phaedra returns.

The elf (Fenella, they learn when she makes her statement) has maintained her composure since her initial outburst. Of course, that's to be expected given the size of the group.

One statements are made, Dorata either locks Fenella in a cell to wait or releases her on her word that she will cause no more trouble.

Fortunately hung back and then further back.

"Someone had better stay here and keep an eye on the fair." She muttered before promptly turning around to scamper back. They really didn't need that many people to escort one elf.

As she slipped and twirled her way back, she considered being sensible. She could do the Drack thing and detect for evil. However, that seemed rude. Torryn instead opted for the smile test. If someone was up to no good they would not reciprocate her enchanting, good natured grin.

Torryn realizes someone needs to stay and watch the fair before they get to the keep, and Manolo joins her in doing so. Drack, Ash, and Loryn go to the keep, but leave after talking with Dorata. Gnubert stays to tell his side, and Mortimer stays to support Noma. It does not take long for Dorata to write down the incident, and ask Fenella where she is staying while in town -- perhaps an odd question with so many people camping. Mole has been avoiding the crowds, and is still at it.

The group is able to go join in the festivities -- keeping an eye out for trouble, of course, even from the dance floor. As they enjoy their favorite of the available pastimes, word spreads that Grog is looking for The Heroic Woldians, and was that the group that stopped a fight this afternoon? The locals encourage you to head to the Happy Half-Ogre, the tourists spread exaggerated tales of the day.

Whilst Gnubert knew next to nothing of Torryn's abilities, it was very clear that she was a most accomplished dancer.

It was only with reluctance that she left the dancefloor to accompany the others into town. She was not glum. There would be more dancing later. In the meantime she would savour all the sight, smells and sounds of the day. In short, she was her usual, ebullient self.

Manolo, perhaps enjoying his drink a bit, marches to the Happy Half-Ogre.
Drack heads over to see Grog when the invitation comes.
Gnubert dances, not caring that he hasn’t studied how.
Ash marvels at Torryn’s outlook.
Torrynashkabbeth is delighted that Gnubert joins her on the dance floor. She reluctantly leaves to head over to Grog’s place, knowing she will return.
Mole wakes and starts making something from a stone.
Loryn looks for spices and herbs at the festival, especially those he cannot find locally.
Mortimer escorts Noma where she would like to go, before joining his friends at dancing.

The gang heads over to the Happy Half-Ogre, Grog’s tavern. There, Grog pulls them in front of a crowd including Edwina and Phaedra. The others later tell Gnubert these are the mayor and captain of the guard. ”Citizens of Windhorn, I invite you to raise a glass to the heroes of our town. A few weeks ago I convinced them to come with me to the Red Hills, partly so we could see what threats may come but also so I could see their mettle. Let me tell you, I am well pleased. They defeated a basilisk, a party of goblins, an owlbear, and some nasty undead things. They learned enough from the goblins that in my opinion we need not fear a raid from the hills anytime soon. And they did it all with their own ingenuity and courage. At my age, I worry about protecting this place. I am satisfied that I need not worry now!” Grog finishes by leading a cheer, which the crown enthusiastically joins.

Lots of folks offer the members of your group drinks that night, and Grog takes each of you (excluding Gnubert) aside privately and offers you a choice of minor magic item from his collection.

When it was Torryn's turn to choose, she bounced through excitedly to the private room wherein Grog wished to offer up the selection of prizes. She hadn't expected a 'reward' as such, but it would have been rude to decline.

"Thanks, Groggy!" she enthused as she peered over the various items arrayed before her across a particularly stout table. !You're too kind, seriously."

What to pick? That was the problem. After some thought, she opted for something small. It was a ring. The ring was composed of two metals and depicted alternating kite shields; one facing up, the next down and so one. Torryn knew little about metal, so just assumed one was copper, the other silver. With a winning smile, she picked it up and placed it on her left ring finger. It fit perfectly.

Mortimer is dazzled by Grog's treasure room. His wide eyes can't rest on one item before darting off at another. "Grooogg, you're such an ace, mate!" Mortimer simply can't decide when confronted with such magic. Then out of the corner of his eye, the shadow of his hand extends outward to a simple, mundane garment.

Mortimer emerges from the backroom door. He's dressed head to toe in full dragonscale plate armor. His helm is encrusted in jewels, spikes and horns. In his hand is a magnificent battle axe forged with all the artful splendor by the greatest weaponsmiths. With a dumbstruck expression, he glibly asks, "How'd you all make out in there?" After a short pause, Mortimer is no longer capable at keeping a straight face. He can't help but laugh. The armor and weapons fade away into shadows. All that remains is the normal, everyday Mortimer ... except for his new hat, that he tips to you all.

Gnubert hangs in the background while his friends get their moment.
Mole works on the rock he is shaping.
Drack thanks Grog for the amulet.
Ash enjoys the free drinks, and a ring.
Mortimer has fun with his hat.
Loryn is quiet.
Torrynashkabbeth chooses a ring from among the items Grog offers.

Once Grog has made his announcement and congratulated each member of the group, there are still plenty of other people ready to add their own thanks, often in the form of a drink. There is still dancing going on, and while the more rustic contests set up for Grog’s birthday don’t seem to be a part of this festival, there is plenty to eat and people from far away. Loryn is able to find some new spices, not that they were for sale but by striking up a conversation with the right person. And the fun looks likely to go well into the night.

There is no shortage of things to do for a day or two before the festival breaks up and the travelers leave. Then the heroes are left to figure out what to do next.

Planning was not one of Torryn's fortes. Dancing was. So, whilst there was dancing to be had, that's what occupied her time and thoughts, not ruminations on the path to to take afterwards.

She had of course seen the amulets and hat, but had preferred the little ring. Besides she was very proud of her unusual hair, putting a hat on seemed somehow wrong. As to the amulets, she was a very mobile dancer and having something like bouncing around wouldn't be at helpful. She had no doubt that her own necklace would soon be gone. There was only one remaining fireball to cast. Given the troubles they had a knack for encountering, she was sure that it be employed sooner rather than later.

Of course, not all her time could be devoted to dancing. She had to look after Spot. Whilst Spot undoubtedly enjoyed her rest, she wouldn't want to be cooped up for too long. So Torryn took her for gentle rides and showed her the myriad, simple joys of nature. In admiring nature, Torryn was mindful of her teacher's comments. Specifically, how she could learn from it. Whilst Torryn was undoubtedly a slow learner, learn she did.

Torryn happily busied herself with her practice. Stretching was really important, so rising early she went down to the stable to show Spot how it was done. The stretching went well. the meditation, not so much. Groggy had asked her what she intended to do next. She hadn't got a ready answer. The only thing she could think of was returning to the icky temple or shrine - whatever it was - to make sure that no one had returned to do more 'bad stuff'. At the very least another patrol seemed to be in order.
