The party walks with Karce for various reasons, asking for for additional information about the place and generally keeping a sharp eye out for trouble. Karce seems far more relaxed outside of the city and the further you get, the more his stride falls to an easy natural cadence.

"I have not gotten too close to the place. The manor sits about 300 feet down a small overgrown cart path. Iv'e been all the way down the path, but there is obvious signs of something kinda big having trampled the vegetation closer to the structure. So well, i wasn't for pressing my luck. As to the size of the structure, I dont think it is all that large, but its got a wall and some expensive stone work."

The party arrives at the cart path and if you weren't looking for it, it would be nearly impossible to find. Karce points out a scent on the air, which Gaffer also instantly notices, chocolate mint. Gaffer knows and Karce explains, "An extremely rare plant, gives that scent off in the late spring and is the reason i made a left at this point to find it. That's when i noted the path . Shall we?"

Karce steps through the overgrowth, being careful to lift it out of the way so as it can fall back and cover the entrance naturally once again. The path is very overgrown, but the Nira and Danko both catch the flagstones here and there underneath. Beautifully fit together granite. A pause for closer inspection shows them to be very precise and polished to a near perfectly smooth surface.

A few mintutes later and the tight path opens up.

A once manicured path surrounded by fruit trees and prairie grasses leads to a single story home with an off centered turret tower whose roof has collapsed into it.
The thick glass pane windows are still intact and the large chimney centered near the back would indicate a relatively open interior floor plan. Looming above the blue slate roof in the back, a willow tree can be seen.
The area is heavily overgrown, and Kudzu grows nearly everywhere. Through the opening in the wall, appears to be a fairly fresh path of trampled greenery.

Pointing to the path of trampled greenery, "And that is why here is as close as I have gotten."

"You might wanna wait here," he tells Karce.

The fighter passes on the Silenced coin, trusting Danko's point skils and wanting Nira to be able to cast spells as needed.

He gives Danko a 60' lead, and then moves out, head on a swivel.

Karce replies to Des that he is quite well staying outside and not getting in the way. Entering the home or former home of a powerful and wealthy wizard that consorted with alien creatures that could threaten the Wold did not align with his future plans of being alive tomorrow.

Ramirez casts Silence upon a coin and gives it to Danko, who takes point.
Gaffer casts a couple of prep spells and moves up to get a good look at the trampled area.
Des and Hmerrin move in behind Danko and Gaffer.
Nira slides to the back and outside of the Silence zone.

The coin prevents all sound coming from the group or getting to the group, so nira hears the rustling of vegetation first, just around the corner of the structure to the left. Gaffer mentally calls the group to stop as he spots a partial print and knows now what lies within the overgrown walls. The druid can telepathically communicate and does so.

The party was walking into a Dire Bear lair. The druid is quite certain there are cubs, at least 2 and both the female and male adults as well. Another print confirms that the male is particularly large

Looking up the party spies a huge Dire bear, larger than anything any of you has even heard of, lumber from around the corner. The great bear cocks its head to regard you for a moment.

Gaffer notes the size of the creature and tries to assess whether that is likely a difference in Fargunian species or of some magical nature.

He sends to the others. "I'll be honest, I made preparations for magical plants, but not for animals, and they've got cubs here so they won't take kindly to our presence."

Gaffer can't help but sigh, life is funny sometimes. He does always come prepared to speak with animals at least so he will move to the side, out of the silence, and cast the spell.

"Hello Sir, sorry for intruding on your territory. Can we talk?"

A relatively quick mental conversation is had by the group and it is decidied that combat should be a last resort and that Gaffer should talk them into leaving, or at least letting the party investigate the place.

Ramirez slowly backs up and Gaffer moves out of the silence to cast Speak with Animals

"Hello Sir, sorry for intruding on your territory. Can we talk?"
Gaffer translates mentally as the bear growls out "Nanik, Gend, Geln, Hunj! We have company! Be alert!" The bear then direct words to Gaffer, still on all fours and not appearing to be riled up as of yet. "I will listen

Gaffer sees no evidence of anything from where he stands, that the bear is anything other than unusually large for his species. Nira can confirm there is nothing magical about the bear.

2 additional adult males come from around the corner and while large, are only about half as big as the bear now talking to Gaffer. These bears too, do not take on offensive postures.

Nira makes sure that Karce stays well away from the encounter. If these are the critters that have stopped him coming in the past, she doesn't want him to freak out now and startle the bears.

She then looks at Gaffer and uses her BW ability to give him a little boost to any diplomacy he may try.

Gaffer quickly realises his mistake in being the one to speak with the bears, but support comes over the telepathic bond and he tries to keep things simple and direct. It has been a long time since he's spoken to a bear.

"We have been asked to make safe this place for others of our kind, but we do not wish you any harm, nor want any bloodshed. I understand this is your home but I fear others after us will be less kind. Is there anything that might make you willing to move home, anything we could offer you? We can help you travel and help ensure your cubs safety."

Ramirez mentally does what he can to aid Gaffer and keep himself non threatening
A glance back at Karce notices the elf has slowly backed away a few steps in case grunting and growling turn to screaming and running.
Nira taps into other worldly powers to aid Gaffer
Des lends his support as well and Hmrerrin hopes for the best
Gaffer keeps the mental translation going but he doesn't have to for all of it

"Less kind!" the large bear thunders and stands to his full height, nearly 30'. Thick boney plates can be seen across his chest and lower body under the thick fur and more than a score of old healed wounds. Heal Check DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {most appear to be from blades and bolts}

Two femlale bears round the corner at the proclamation, each moving up beside what gaffer knows to be her mate. Slightly smaller than the males, they are still as large as a large horse. The males fur bristles, but they remain on all fours.

"I am Yownuhg and fear nothing!" At this, the other four bears flatten their ears and dip their heads in deference. The great bear stares but a moment at Gaffer and then settles back down to a calmer stance

"What CAN you offer? I will listen human"

It seems after an initial possible misstep see bad roll there is still a chance to end this without bloodshed

"Perhaps there's a way they can stay? If Karce is planning to move out here, he will be away from a lot of people and all alone. He strikes me as someone who likes nature and animals, well, chickens at least. Rather than asking the bears to move from their home, do you think they might be willing to live in peace with Karce? His potions could help treat any illnesses, and he'd probably be able to spare a chicken or two from time to time. He could also help make sure that any humanoids know not to disturb them"

Desdichado agrees with Nira and telepathically adds I got a strong sense that Karce doesn't like being around people anyway, or at least not in the city. I have a feeling he wouldn't be bringing any one else from the noble races out this way to bother them.

I like this plan. Karce did not seem to want anyone else beside himself. The bear seems to be offended if there is any suggestion that he cannot protect his pack. We could offer Karce could be a go between to trade for the bears with the town? All they need to do is let him live here and raise chickens and grow herbs. We could also ask what do they need

Gaffer recieves the thoughts of his companions and tries to pick his next words better.

"You are mighty indeed, but those are many scars. Our companion, a herbalist, healer and friend of nature, he wishes to explore this area and make a home here. I think they could be any ally to you, provide healing, care and aid to your cubs, as well access to things a town could provide. In return for your protection and permission to stay, oh and to and bring his chickens."

Gaffer pauses, unsure if it is better to leave it there but adds. "If this is not enough, please tell us of your wants. We have powerful magic to help make this a better home for you and your sleuth."

Nira formulates a possible course and Ramirez and De are in agreement on the sensibility of it. Karce and the bears, simply staying and living together for some mutual benefits.

Gaffer presents the idea...

The bear takes several steps forward to Gaffer and gives the druid a sniffing inspection. His nose, nearly as large as the druids head, is...well, thorough. Finished he looks past the entire group at Karce and growls to Gaffer "Bring him here." He also grunts Daughter! Come with my grandson!"

Karce is not sure why his stomach is tightening and his palms are sweating, but his eyes dart about. Perhaps the bear looking more at him then part of strangers? Was it the curious look, was that a smirk, on the stalwart fighters' face? Oh this is not going well, Did they set me up?

Nira is pretty good at getting a sense of what people are feeling, and she has a fair idea that Karce is getting very uncomfortable right now. She tries to reassure him that everything is fine.

"It's ok Karce. Gaffer has spoken with the bears and found that they call this place their home. He's proposed that you can live here in peace alongside the bears and they seem receptive. You could help care for them, and they could help care for you. It would be much safer for you out here all alone if you had some bears guarding you, wouldn't it?"

Gaffer waits calmly while the Yownuhg inspects him, he doesn't think the bear would bother with subterfuge if he meant to attack.

"Karce, this is Yownuhg, Nanik, Gend, Geln, Hunj and two others to join shortly. Yownuhg would like to meet you." Gaffer then turns to Yownuhg, "This is our companion Karce, I think he may be intimidated by you."

He waits for the bear to judge Karce, unsure what will sway his decision, and for Karce to hopefully voice his own approval.

Karce stands there, jaw open. "You want me to what now?"

It takes some time and doing, but Yownuhg has come to agree that Karce can freely come and go or even stay semi long term. Karce agrees that he will not tell anyone or bring anyone out.

Karce gets sniffed by all of the bears and to his credit, he doesn't soil himself even once.

The ordeal finishes up and Yownuhg lets Gaffer know that none of them have been inside. Their lair is around back. Karce excuses himself as well, having some planning and gathering of things before returning.

The party soon finds themselves alone in the front part of the house, just inside a well made but heavily overgrown wall

Hmerrin chuckles as Karce moves off. That is one heck of a story he can't tell anyone.

The fighter considers Gaffer's question.

"Well...its either the magical traps and golems left behind by a long dead human wizard, or its an undead wizard and his friends.

Or I suppose it could be completely empty...."

Hmerrin points Danko towards the nearest door, keeping his eyes peeled for things that jump out.

Danko takes point to examine the front door. The Silence spell on the coin as well as Gaffer's Speak with Animals have expired. the group forms up behind and Danko inspects the front door. He see no means to keep it locked, nor any sign of a trap.

Opening the door results in a blue pulse of light that ripples across each of you, seeking out magical emmanations and dispelling them.

Each PC is affected by Targeted Dispel to all ongoing magical spells, not Items. All spells Caster Level less than 21 are dispelled

Appearing on either side of Danko are 2 beings, humanoid with great feathered wings and golden eyes. Powerful otherworldly maces gripped in their hands, both erupt in holy power.

Nira isn't entirely sure these astral beings can be reasoned with. If they are here by choice, then fantastic. She fears they have been summoned though and under someone's control. That means diplomacy might not be an option.

If they take any action that isn't diplomatic, Nira will cast a Greater Dispel Magic further into the room in the hopes of removing them both.

Des opens with a diplomatic approach and Danko with an offering of carrots
Gaffer tenses for a fight nd Hmerrin readies to respond in kind if one starts.
The Greater Dispel Magic, for Nira at least, is countered by her magical ring. Nira prepares for violence as well.

The Astral Deva's strike,
Hmerrin axe flashes and connects and then with Nira's own Dispel Magic, the Deva's are gone and the threat is ended.

The door swings slowly open, no longer held shut by magic. The interior has not completely withstood the test of time
The entrance foyer is nicely tiled with inlays of wood and gold. The smell of plant matter and stagnant water is powerful, but not overwhelming. The light is is and details hard to discern, but there must be windows or holes in the house here and there, as everything is not black. The foyer has a pair of half walls with beautiful wood spindles that extend to the ceiling.

Nira breathes a sigh of relief. If the devas have been returned to their home plane then they are free to do as they like - and being really 'good' beings that's, well, good.

Nira waits to see which direction the rest of the group goes. Will they split up or stick together? She holds her ground for now.

Des moves straight through the entry way, into the kitchen and out the back to find himself in what would have been a lovely private sitting room.

Nira recharges her ring and then waits for the inevitable.

Gaffer recasts his Barkskin and sticks with Des

Ramirez fololows Des and Gaffer, supplying additional light with Dancing Lights

Danko casts Stoneskin and Mage Armor and heads to the lab.

Des, Gaffer and Ramirez The kitchen holds little of interest, the cupboards are shut, a side door suggests a larder, which is closed a great cast iron stove is quite cold and sits unused. The sitting room/eating nook has a beautiful great bay window that looks into the back of the building upon a now, very overgrown pond. A massive willow tree dominates the area and it is easy to see how this would be a picture perfect spot to sit in peace. A plate and wine glass still sit upon the table and a pair of closed books are there as well, as if someone was going to sit down to read.
A bookshelf along the left wall is slid back revealing a stone stair to the cellar.

Danko and Hmerrin There are five large waist high tables in the room adn two of them have a carved out impression that would fit a medium form. Old drain pans lie in a small knocked over stack by both tables. The walls once perhaps held pictures or perhaps charts of some kind, but the interior exposure to outer elements have rendered them into tatters and faded nothing. The other three tables appear to be workbenches with tools that one might find in a jewelers shop. Old powders and glassware with unlabeled and unknowable contents adorn them. Upon one table Danko spies a hand sized near 5" thick piece of leather.

Nira enters the room behind Des and Gaffer. She also goes to check over the books and checks to see if they are dusty at all - signs they have been like this for a while. She then looks carefully at the plate and wine glass for signs they may have been touched recently.

After that she does a slow lap of the room, and pauses by the bookcase. She looks over any books on the shelf to try and get an idea on the topics they cover. Nira then checks to see how the bookcase has been slid aside. Are any track marks recent?

Finally, she examines the opening to the stairs, being very careful not to pass through just yet. If they found a trap at the main entrance then they should probably take a little more care.

"Perhaps we should have asked the bears if they'd heard any noises from this place, or seen anything through the windows?" It's too late now of course.

If she doesn't find anything alarming, Nira takes a step back from the stairs. Scouting ahead sounds like a job for someone 'more robust' than she is.

Gaffer and Des inform the others on the feeling of being watched and Gaffer looks, but not touches the books and other contents of the small sitting area.
Des communicates the existence of stairs and glances at the 2 books on the table.
Nira comes in behind and looks about as well, again being careful to not disturb anything.
Danko casts Detect Magic and sweeps the room. while Hmerrin keeps a vigilant eye out.

The lab contains nothing magical and it does not appear that anyone has been in here for a very long time.

The sitting room likewise shows no sign of having been occupied for an extremely long time and neither of the two books on the table have titles The bookcase contains the remains of several others, thier covers peeled and the bindings in horrid disrepair from possible centuries of exposure to mildew, damp, heat and cold over the changing seasons.

Nira's examination at the top of the stairs provides little information. The stairs descend into a stone foundation and are themselves made of stone. Moss and normal mold is everywhere and her Arcane sight reveals no emmanations.

The group decides to head into the basement and Danko leads the way. Spying no traps, he heads down the stairs. there are no tracks to seen. The stairs, like the rest of the house , do not appear to have been used or cared for in over a hundred years
Hmerrin, Des, Ramirez and Nira follow with Gaffer lingering just a bit for the others to make the bottom. Which they do without incident.

The Basement is fairly large and contains several large racks of storage for food stuffs, non perishables, some repair to the building equipment and more than a couple of large wooden casks of various woods for the aging of wine and other spirits. Down the central lane, which is wider than the two outer wall lanes, lies several large kegs that apparently rolled free of their mounting. Under one of them is the remains of a humanoid. The body and clothing are in rough shape, exposed to the ravanges of weather, time and insect life.

She looks at the body for any other possible causes of death. "Imagine being stuck under there for days, with food stuffs just outside of reach. It would be torture." She sighs and shakes her head. This would not have been a good way to go.

If its clear, he nods to Dez and tries to roll the cask away.
"And this why it pays to have nosy neighbors," he grunts.

The group closes on the deceased and can confirm the remains are human. Hmerrin circles around and also confirms there is nothing else and no one else in the basement.
Convinced the way is clear, Hmerrin and Des move to clear the cask.
As Nira expected, the fall of the heavy cask shattered the man's pelvis and pinned him to the floor. The cask shows signs of wear, further evidence that the victim here was awake to the end.

The cask is extremely heavy as you lift and roll it away. just under, you spy a small tasting glass of now tarnished silver and a wooden key that would fit the tap of the cask. Hmerrin and Nira's sharp eyes catch one thing that seems out of place. The left ring finger has been separated from the body, lying just a foot or so away. Some partially mummified flesh remains near the end, but none where a ring might have been.

Gaffer leans in on the remains to see what he can piece together. With everything else that the druid has seen, he places the corpse at 175+ years and it could very well be 250 years old which aligns with what Damarious Foxx recounted as the timelines.
As Hmerrin lays out his thoughts on the finger, Gaffer agrees the evidence supports that. After the death, someone was down here and took/claimed/stole the ring. The lack of prints suggests that event occurred a very long time ago as well.
Nira and Hmerrin both agree to a proper burial, but they are not quite done with the rest of the place yet.
Danko detects no magic beyond the own Tide's auras.

The group leaves the body to look through the rest of the place first. The ring was stolen long ago, only the finger upon which it rested remains. Back to the main floor and into the lab the party makes over to the stairs going up. Danko at point keeps an eye out for more traps, but does not notice any.
The stairs come out on a small landing that leads left and right. Both to fine wooden doors that Gaffer can easily identify as palm. A wood that is not found here and would need to have been imported. Neither door has a trap on it and are unlocked.

Both open with some effort, age having warped them a bit to jam in the frame, but nothing that causes any issue. Both doors open into bedroom suites. Lavishly furnished with individual washrooms and stained glass windows. The ravishes of time have been felt here as well. Thick dust, moss and mold cover everything.

In the right hand bedroom, the bed is unmade, a robe draped across it indicating use so long ago, but there are no personal items as one might expect anywhere.

In the left hand bedroom, the bed is neatly made, a robe hangs on a hook and other than the layer of dust and moss growing within, looks ready for use

The group does a more thorough search upstairs, going through drawers and such. You find clothes in the room with the unmade bed, along with a few small crystal decanters, perhaps perfume of some kind, an ancient hairbrush, shaving items, hand mirror and so forth. All things you would expect, carefully put away. You also find a small rosewood coffer and inside are several old leather pouches. The extremely powerful trap on the front door gives pause to Gaffer, for nothing inside, thus far would suggest such power. The one secret door is open and no trap was discovered upon it.

The group decides a more thorough and physical search needs to be done. They were on the top floor and so that is where Hmerrin starts.
Dez, Nira Danko and Ramirez head back to the small sittting room where Gaffer and Dez 'felt' a precense.
Gaffer heads outsde to make a lap and compare exterior expectations with interior perceptions.

Hmerrin is in the right side bedroom about 10' from the door which itself is 15' from the top of the stairs. He has found in the bottom of a drawer another fist sized 5" thick piece of leather. This one is roughly teardrop shaped.

Des picks up the book and knows he needs to be gentle. It looked in better condition, but it really isn't. He does not get to look long before the feeling returns with terrible power.
Danko, Nira and Ramirez are assaulted as well.
Hatred, vengence, anger....the emotions assault the four in the sitting room...pure unbridled, unthinking rage....

"Thieves!"

Upstairs, Hmerrin clearly hears the booming voice and the floor under his feet shutters. The entire house moans and a dresser shutters before sliding across the floor in an attempt to block Hmerrin's exit of the room. It does not.

Gaffer more feels then hears the voice and the houses interior goes dim, than pulses with a darkness. The grass about his feet seems to recah for him

In the sitting room, the Dancing Lights dim as darkness closes. Shadows seem to lean off of the walls. Ever alert, you spot several actual forms coalese in the entry room.

Clad in ripped and torn chainmail, an emancipated form of a half orc swirls into existence. The helm upon the skull is cracked and dented. Within the eye sockets of the skull, twin ruby flames flicker and pulse with each movement the menacing creature makes. forming in its hand is ghostly scimitar crackling with black energy.

A second form steps from the wall, a half dissolved leather chest piece exposing charred ribs. The cloak about the skeletal shoulders is in tatters, but the symbol of Jancasis is still distinguishable. The head is completely missing, only a pair of burning flames float where the eyes would be. A pair of serrated daggers sit easily in the gloved hands.

A third form floats in from the foyer, an upper torso of a dwarf, only clad in scale mail and brandishing a great sword flickering with ghostly green fire and lighting. Patches of long thin hair float about the skeletal head and cracked ancient lips are peeled back to reveal the skeletal grin.

Just behind in the foyer entrance is another. Long ago, rich robes clad the ghostly frame, now a tattered mockery of loss. A great staff gripped tightly, shining with a ghostly green light. The face is shriveled, but the angular features and ears clearly denote the elf heritage.

A ghost halfling appears still appearing nearly identical to what she likely did in life. Though her eyes now flash with a red flame of the hatred of life. Her beautiful tunic, leggings and cloak crackle with negative energy as she draws a slim and elegant rapier.

A ghostly woman human appears. Half of her face is torn to the skull, hanging like a morbid decoration, yet she smiles broadly. Her plate armor is partially dissolved and charred. Her limbs are torn and shredded with bits of the once protective armor hanging worthlessly about them. A great shield floats on her left and is split and sundered. An elven curved blade in hand seems to endlessly drip blood.

He takes in the scene as he descends.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs, he slashes at an undead.

Hmerrin moves out of the bedroom, down the hall and down the stairs. 10' to the bedroom door+15' down the hall+10 down the stairs.+5 gets to v17 He activates a tattoo and draws his axes.

Des channels energy, sending out a 30' pulse. Not only does it affect some of the ghost, but it also causes the house itself to shudder.

Gaffer moves aginst the outer wall and casts a spell.

Ramirez casts Haste, affecting everyone except Hmerrin and Gaffer. He then starts up a lively song of inspiration. The bardic song does not affect Hmerrin or Gaffer as they cannot see or hear the bard

Danko Casts Chain Lightning. The main bolt strikes and arcs. Two of the arcing bolts pass harmlessly through the intended target.

Nira casts Control undead and through instructions sends 2 of them away

The ghost advance , flying swiftly and screaming, "You did this! You wretched, vile creature of death!"

The ghost in tattered robes moves after Gaffer, the wall being no more a barrier than open air. The great staff, pulsing with a green arcing eldritch energy sweeps through the druid with agonizing pain.

Nira could just about slap herself. Why did she tell the ghosts to fly away? It would have been much better to just have them float in the corner and answer questions later. What a wasted opportunity.

The attack from the house gets her attention back to the fight and she is genuinely surprised. "Did.. did the house just attack us?". Karce would probably be upset if the party burnt the whole thing to the ground.

Ram patches up her wounds as quickly as she took them, and then she's ready to fight. She waits to see what the rest of the party do and then tries to mop up any remaining. She commands them "Stop fighting and stay right where you are"

Gaffer shrugs off the worst of the effects from the House and runs deeper in to join the others. If the ghost is still there by the time he arrives, he fires off another beam of light to cut through the creature and avoid his allies.

Ramirez wonders on the house and takes out his bow while inspiring his comrades. He backs up as far as he can to a window of leaded stained glass. P/22 is as far as you can get
Nira casts Disrupting Weapon and being a more powerful version, the spell takes hold of the morning star. Going with Nira's supercedes as it is more powerful
Danko strikes the ghost in front on Ramirez with magic missiles
Gaffer heads inside and blasts the ghost with sunbeam
Hmerrin comes in to help as well, destroying it
Dez no longer has a target and can do something else

The halfliing ghost, however, still has a taget and strikes through wall and windows at Des
