No Elevensies Today, Nor Second Breakfast, Even (DM BatMark) Monday April 10th, 2023 9:25:16 PM Panzer eats, drinks, and is merry. Zazu makes some shrunk items for future use, and sets up a rhythm to keep them available. Beech keeps an eye out for an emergent spontaneous caster at the festival, but none appears. His party favors are a big hit with the villagers, though! Naithi watches the harvesting and consults with the others to see whether scrolls might be necessary to increase the yield. Nightingale wanders the party, dances with folks during the music, and eschews speechifying. Sahabiel tries to wrap her mind around the shocking revelations from the Culverwood. (OOC: When real life allows, we can take care of any last things that you were planning to tidy up in town during scene zero.) Lothlo joins in the celebration, making the most of this reprieve from recent dangers.
After a very enjoyable celebration, you are able to retire for the evening, each returning to your usual abodes, but with an invitation to return to the lodgehouses in the morning for breakfast with the party leftovers. As you gather in the morning, some perhaps a late and little bleary-eyed from the revelry, you find that the morning feast is sufficient to be satisfying, if not quite as fresh or plentiful as last evening. Many of your friends and neighbors also drop in and out, as the hamlet returns to its normal rhythm.
As breakfast wraps up, however, Sahabiel’s and Naithi’s apprentices burst into the lodgehouse, looking exhausted and terrified, a handful of leshy plant creatures fluttering in agitation behind them. Naithi’s apprentice, always a bit shy on the best of days, seems near catatonic, but Ghundit breathlessly blurts out, ”The grove, something’s gone very…wrong with it! It's all dark! And there are creatures, unnatural creatures, everywhere! You’ve got to do something!” How do the Champions respond to this entreaty?
Zazu Bridgebuilder (AC20, HP52) and Boyo the bunny (AC19, HP26) (Cayzle) Monday April 10th, 2023 9:55:35 PM
Zazu has finished the spell-book-writing and shrunk four shrinkable items. (Other shrinkable items are stored at home).
Before breakkie, Zazu says, "Look at my new spell everybody! When I cast it, this nifty dome forms. You can shoot out through the dome, and people out of the dome can't see us inside!"
Afterwards, the wizard mentions, "I have a darkvision in my head to cast! We should check it out."

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 25/14/24 -- HP: 60/60 Tuesday April 11th, 2023 4:48:07 PM
Between the cryptic answer from the wood and the festivities in the evening, yesterday has given Sahabiel much to think about, and she is mulling this over at breakfast when the troubling news reaches the lodgehouse.
Sahabiel is on her feet before Ghundit is even done speaking, alarmed enough as she is by the manner of her entrance, and has an arm around her apprentice in a heartbeat. "Are you alright? Did any of those creatures get close to you?", she asks before catching herself on sounding like a worried mother. Must be that seeing Limka deal with Ghundit as her daughter back home all the time is rubbing off on her own treatment of the girl?
After making sure everything is alright with their apprentices, she turns to Naithi grimly. "To arms then, we did not start planting that grove just for the dark to claim it!"
She looks at the leshy that came along. Those are not likely to abandon the trees in their charge, unless to come looking for help.. "Lead the way?"

Panzer hops to his feet, but has questions as he heads for the door. " Are they breaking things or just milling around in the grove? Did they say anything? What language were they speaking if they did say something?" Panzer figures this will be a fight....but what if it isn't? Not all fey look appealing. Some are quite monsterous. What if these fey are escaping to the groups little grove. If the rest of the Culverwood is against them then the grove might look like a safe haven. Panzer wonders what he ate or drank last night to make him this introspective, but maybe it's a good thing. " Beech, try and talk first. They might not be enemies."

Someone Is Going to Pay for This! (DM BatMark) Tuesday April 11th, 2023 9:43:29 PM Sahabiel is torn from her thoughts by concern for Ghundit. After checking the apprentices’ condition, she calls the Champions to arms, and asks the leshy to lead the way. Panzer has questions as he heads for the door. Will this be a fight? He counsels Beech to try and talk first. Zazu has nifty new spells, and a darkvision spell in mind, and wants to check out what is darkening the grove. Beech grabs a snack, and calls for the Champions to move out, imagining the chagrin over his forthcoming fire spells. Lothlo is well fed and ready to take this on. Naithi is outraged that someone is messing with her grove. Nightingale is silent.
The apprentices are breathless and maybe a little scratched up from their pell mell flight from the grove, but have not suffered any great physical harm. Ghundit reassures Sahabiel, ”We’re ok, but some of the villagers were with us, and not all of them made it.” Naithi’s apprentice just nods mutely as Ghundit speaks. When Panzer inquires about the nature of the creatures, Ghundit elaborates, ”The creatures were dead, only they weren’t! We were headed to the grove with some of the other villagers, planning to do the usual tending and all, when a wave of wildlife came rushing toward us. Creatures big and small, from rabbits to deer. They were panicked, and we soon saw why. We rounded a copse and saw that the living animals were followed by a horde of dead things still walking and flying, kind of a mockery of the animals that were fleeing. It was like every dead critter in the area was coming back up from the dirt. We kind of bumbled into them in our shock, and they dragged down some of the villagers before we could get away. I can still hear their screams in my head, it was horrible! Dead animals moving, as far as the eye could see, and up in the air too. Back behind them, we could just make out the grove, and it was completely covered in this weird black mist. I’ve never seen the like. We high-tailed it out of there with the other villagers that survived and ran all the way back here. I guess we were lucky that the dead things don’t move too fast. Can you save the grove?”
You are able to quickly grab your gear and move out toward the grove if you wish.

Sahabiel wil take point as the party crosses the bridge on its way to the grove - if there is a horde of lesser undead swarming near the grove, she is the only one among the Champions suited to both stand in the front line, and channel positive energy. Depending on whether these things are staying near the grove only or moving towards the village, she is considering using the bridge as a fallback choke point...

Zazu also casts a Mage Armor for protection.
The Walking (and Flying) Dead (DM BatMark) Wednesday April 12th, 2023 10:08:02 PM Sahabiel takes point as the Champions move out across the bridge toward the grove. She thinks about possible fallback points. Zazu mage armors up and rides Boyo out toward the grove, darkvision affecting both. Plans to use invisibility may have to wait a bit, as the grove is not right across the river, and the spell duration is not long. Beech laughs when someone suggests negotiating with what subsequently sound like they might be undead, while planning how to most carefully use ‘party favors’ when the time comes. Lothlo is amazed to hear of flying dead creatures, and hopes that arrows will work. Nightingale rushes with her friends to see what is the matter. Panzer and Naithi come along quietly.
The Champions hustle across the bridge and out of town, making haste toward the grove that lies on the other side of the river, between the hamlet and the Deep Culverwood. You hear cries behind you as the clear voices of several of the Council ring out, rallying the village, presumably warned by some of the surviving villagers. As you move across the land, you too see fleeing animals of all sorts, as described by Ghundit. After some time, you see a dark cloud in the distance. As you come closer, you realize that this must be the horde of undead creatures that were encountered by the apprentices and unfortunate villagers. It is moving slowly toward you, an expanding wall and flattened hemisphere of meandering, rotted creatures of all sorts. Most seem to be tiny, birds, rodents, and the like. As they come closer, you can see that more erupt from the earth as the wall passes, like a bizarre tide of undeath. They are fortunately moving rather aimlessly, so it will clearly be some time before it reaches Freedom’s Landing, even if it continues to expand. The horde extends as far as you can see in either direction, and into the sky as well. It seems to be about 60 feet deep from its leading edge near you to the inward edge on the grove side of the horde. Will you try to break through or can you think of another way to get inside?

Sure the forest probably has an endless supply of dead animals, but this seems to strech the possibilities of logic. He guesses they are being summoned somehow and wants to go looks for the summoner. Wall to Wall Undead (DM BatMark) Thursday April 13th, 2023 10:02:22 PM Panzer calls for a darkvision scroll and then tries to stealth around the flank of the horde, but can see that the domed wall of undead curves off into the distance. It seems very possible based on the slow curvature that it entirely rings and covers the top of the grove. He cannot see a source for the horde. Zazu casts a message and uses a Fly scroll on Boyo, who then takes them into the air about 80 feet up. Beech drops a party favor, obliterating dozens of the undead creatures, then casts the darkvision scroll on Panzer. Lothlo astutely realizes that there are far too many undead for the Champions to kill them all, and that the level of power required to do this is unbelievably immense. Lothlo’s closer examination indicates that this is unfortunately all too real, however. Nightingale views this horde as an abomination, and calls on Queen Maab to bless the party, even Zazu and Boyo. Sahabiel wonders what this is, and looks for an opportunity to catch a large number of undead in a burst of positive energy. Naithi is speechless.
Beech’s party favor has blasted a deep gap in the wall of undead, although the ones adjacent start to move to close the gap slowly, leaving a 20 foot dent in the horde–about a third of the way through it. Sahabiel could presumably achieve a similar effect with channeled positive energy. Panzer and Lothlo’s observations suggest that killing all of them encircling the grove or end running them are not viable options. The creatures do seem unexpectedly fragile, many completely vaporized by Beech’s flames. If you can’t bypass them completely through some clever or magical stratagem, perhaps you could hack and blast your way the rest of the way through to get to the grove beyond?
If the Champions decide to fight their way through Highlight to display spoiler: {
This is not a standard pathfinder battle. Think of it more as a cinematic horde battle scene, with mighty sweeps of a blade or powerful magics capable of taking out numerous foes at once. Like the Haradrim oliphants’ charge in the Lord of the Rings movie, for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl8TiA3RwIY
–The party needs to move through 60’ of undead critters in order to get through the horde and continue on toward the grove beyond.
–Assume area of effects powers (e.g. spells like Fireball) will affect 4 of the undead creatures per 5’ square of the AoE. You don’t worry about placement or friendly fire, just calculate the maximum number of foes affected based on the AoE.
–PCs making melee and ranged weapon, unarmed, or natural attacks can choose to use an effect similar to the Great Cleave feat. As a standard action, they may make an attack against a foe within their melee reach or range. If it hits, they may continue to make successive attacks against foes within reach or range, taking a cumulative -2 penalty for each successive attack after the first, until an attack misses. The undeads’ AC is 12, and any hit will destroy one.
–Any PC within or within reach or range of the horde can attack as many times with this “Great Cleave” like power as the cumulative penalty will allow.
–For each 20 undead destroyed, the party can move ahead 10’ on a 10’ front without drawing attacks of opportunity.
–You’re not sure yet what happens if you just try to bull through the critters, but can try if you like.
–email me if you have questions, and have fun wreaking havoc on these abominations! }

Panzer moves up 30’ into the cleared space in the swarm and swings wildly, overbalancing in his enthusiasm. Zazu goes invisible and flies higher and further to see what is ahead. Sahabiel stands her ground, and can tell that the horde is slowly advancing, in an ever-broadening hemisphere. It is still only 60’ thick, so there is a wide and growing space between it and the grove that is well beyond the dome of undead. Lothlo does some quick math and decides that arrows might not be the solution. For one clarification re the oddball rules of this fight Highlight to display spoiler: {The party needs to destroy sufficient creatures that are actually on a path through. So fireballs and the like kill many that don’t immediately help as much as the total number caught in their radius outside the path would suggest, although they do also keep the neighboring undead from closing back in to block the path as quickly, which is useful as noted below.}
Zazu reports back that the undead do indeed seem to form a dome centered on the grove, in a layer 60’ thick at all points. Within, the trickster can see the grove shrouded in dark mist, just as the apprentices described. Ranged legerdemain indicates that the swarm is all too real.
At this point, there is a 10’ wide path through the undead behind Panzer, and a 20’ wide path ahead of him, reaching all the way to the other side of the horde, even after the nearest ones move to partially close the gap. If their past movements are a guide, they will probably continue to close the gap to fill the path unless more are destroyed along the path through. Three of the nasty things closest to Panzer push one of their fellows up and into his chest, where it scrabbles at him, leaving a scratch for 2hp of damage. First blood! She is ready to channel. Beech thinks that one more blast will get the party in, but is also concerned about running low on spells. He blasts the near side, then runs into the cleared area, making it halfway through the band of undead. Naithi waits until the fire spells are done, then casts an entangle spell to hold back the creatures on one side. She asks whether you are charging in or standing and fighting. Lothlo shoots an arrow which ends up skewering an incredible 5 undead, clearing more of the way ahead beyond Beech, before himself moving up near the sorcerer. Highlight to display spoiler: {I used your first roll’s bonus to calculate and give you credit for hitting multiple targets per the previous spoilered rules for this encounter, but please check the other spoiler below re how you can make multiple attacks in this fight, including with ranged weapons.} Panzer charges ahead, destroying 7 of the undead as he goes, and reaches the other side of the horde. He calls for everyone to get a move on! Sahabiel channels energy, keeping the near end wide open. Zazu waits to see what happens next.
The undead on the left side close in, leaving a roughly 5’ wide path in front of Beech and Lothlo that leads beyond the horde. Panzer guards that far end. Behind Beech and Lothlo, there is a 30’ wide path into the horde, thanks to Beech and Sahabiel. The right flank is protected by Naithi’s entangle. So for this moment, there is a path all the way through. You can tell that it will close in a few moments, barring more action by the Champions. Do you run the 60’ gauntlet (30’ for Beech and Lothlo) or try something else?
A reminder re the basic rules of fighting your way through the horde: Highlight to display spoiler: {
–email me if you have questions, and have fun wreaking havoc on these abominations! }
Zazu Bridgebuilder (AC20, HP52) and Boyo the bunny (AC19, HP26) (Cayzle) Monday April 17th, 2023 10:25:30 PM
Zazu looks carefully. Is this a circular wall or an actual dome? If it is indeed a dome, Zazu and Boyo will have to fly through when there is an opening created by friends. If it is not a dome, then Boyo can just fly over.
"If you were a badger, Boyo, we could just tunnel under." The dire bunny rolls his eyes.
"I wonder if these things are summoned. If so, a Protection from Evil would come in handy. But I don't have that spell, myself."
"I do have a burning hands, if that would help open a way forward." [OOC: Zazu will cast the Burnign Hands if it seems needed to carve a way through.]
Nightingale (JonS) HP 51/51 AC 21 CMD: 21 Channel: 2d6=10 ; Tuesday April 18th, 2023 11:50:25 AM
Nightingale's powers are as good as her cousins, but she uses them anyway ...

Naithi spurs Camalayas forward as she attacks the undead between her and her grove. The innocent looking little girl extends her claws and is suddenly bathing fangs. So, you've come to dance... In a sh she is twirling and t, as if dancing on horseback (rabbitback). As she moves to music only she can hear a crimson mist surround her as she slides through five jugulars in as many seconds. It seems Naithi has finally balanced her animalistic combat instinct with her fey nature and her natural balletic style of fighting.
(For those that didn't notice, her combat style changed exact l each time she added a class.)
Camalayas - Run full speed through the corridor Naithi - Kill 5 beating ac 25, 23, 16, 15, and 21 (One hero point used. Not necessary, but Naithi will protect her grove and the Leshi at all costs. And it fits in character.)

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 25/14/24 -- HP: 60/60 Tuesday April 18th, 2023 7:42:44 PM
Sahabiel runs down the corridor she just helped establish, keeping her eyes open for what lies within. Assuming that Nightingale's channeling widened the 5' wide part back to a more comfortable passage, she is going to conserve further uses of channeling... for now.
