Mak is a little disappointed that he was wrong about an undead Grovas, and vaguely recalls hearing about beholders, though details allude him, and he asks which of his friends know about them, and how best to deal with them. He worries they may not have enough time to research them properly, and silently wonders if they need to kill it, or just tell Drola about it.
Kiwina doesn't think just saying, "We heard it was a beholder" is enough, as it could be an attempt to start a rumor to strengthen the House of Teeth's position. He wants to go to Tide territory in the morning, but doesn't want to discuss plans in front of Tovy.
Falco thinks a Beholder seems terrifying, but wonders if, unlike their past experience, this monster can be negotiated with. Knowing what he knows now, he isn't keen on the sneaking in solo bit.
Elyas apologizes for not knowing about beholders, and gives an explanation as to why. He believes some research is in order. He too doesn't wish to discuss plans in front of Tovy.
Wil suggests that their goal was to gain information and report back. He would like to fight the thing, but wonders if they have already achieved their goal. he asks if they have what they came for.
Tsak is glad that an undead dragon isn't their next opponent, but instead they have to deal with an unknown. He suggests heading back to the Rose and then doing some research in the AM. He is happy how they seem to adapting to city life.
Rolth chips in on Tovy's payment, and than asks the gnome if their is any way he would prefer they leave, so as not to draw House of Teeth attention to them. He doesn't think they need to worry about planning until after doing some research.
Ayotnom is surprised he has found something he knows next to nothing about. (Hugh, I'm sorry if it seems I ignored your knowledge rolls, but I did address them with the OoC disclaimer at the top of yesterdays post. I wrote that due to the extremely rare nature of such a beast, no one knows anything about beholders, with the exception of their appearance, but maybe they could get information at a WBL chapter house, or a Sages Guild library.)
**********************************
Tovy looks a little lost when the Petals start talking mission parameters, but doesn't seem to be surprised, and it is clear that he had an idea as to what you were here for from the beginning.
"What you do with the information a sold you is up to you, I'm just a businessman, and if your worried I may go to the Teeth, don't. The Teeth don't buy information, they take it by force. There is no profit to be gained, and I didn't get where I am today by giving stuff away for free.
Thank you master liontaur, I have worked hard to make my shop what it is today. If you will depart the way you came, that would be best, but first let me cover my lamp, so no light spews into the alley, possibly bringing unwanted attention."
With that he puts the cover over his magical lamp, and heads towards the door. after checking to make sure the coast is clear, he holds the door for you, and bids you a silent farewell.
What will our intrepid heroes do next. Will they head to the WBL in the AM, will they throw caution to the wind and just go for it tomorrow night, will they head over to the House of Daggers HQ and share what they have learned with Drola, or will they do something unexpected that completely throws their DM off, causing him to have a mental break down. Tune in tomorrow to find out. Same taur time, same taur channel.

DM Jeremy Thursday March 23rd, 2023 11:56:11 AM Oops, total brain fart. every time I wrote WBL, I meant WLA. Not sure how I confused that in my head I guess abbreviations are harder than they look. LOL.
Wil is ready to hit the WLA tomorrow and get the job done tomorrow night. He wouldn't be opposed to hitting the warehouse now, but the distraction is tomorrow night.
Falco is ready for tomorrow as well. Hitting the WLA for research in the AM. He's not keen on the whole sneaking thing, now that they have an idea what they may face.
Mak is ready to head back to the ship, but is willing to stop back at the Tide. He can't remember what they changed their ships name to (What, you change the name of the Rose? How did I miss that, and what is her new name?) He tries to remember the name of the chick impressed by him. (I wasn't In the DM chair at the time, and Mark did that bit ad-lib, so instead of searching for it lets just say her name is Sarah.)
Elyas agrees that sticking to the original plan of tomorrow night seems wise, after researching in the AM. He is worried that a fight with a beholder may not be as quick and quiet as they would like.
Once back to the Gilded Lily, Rolth unintentionally reminds his DM that his DM is an idiot and is ready to hit the WLA in the AM. He isn't sure how to handle the two guards, as there seemed to be some confusion caused by the DM transfer (Sorry about that. Mark and I try to communicate so we can have seamless transfers, but sometimes things get missed. The module is written so as to go either way with the guards/distraction. He picked one route, and somehow I missed it and assumed he picked the other. once my post was made, I realized my mistake, but the damage was already done) He isn't worried about the fight being quick, but he hopes the distraction will deal with the noise.
Ayotnom wonders if Beholders can teleport stuff, as he wonders why they would bring it in to help with smuggling.
Tsak keeps his eyes peeled as he heads back to the ship.
Kiwina is so happy with the plan that is shaping up, he posted it twice. (Stupid repeating post issuies) He also keeps his eyes out for trouble

DM Jeremy Friday March 24th, 2023 11:07:52 AM
Falco has a big breakfast with eggs. He isn't in a rush to see this mission done, and considers joining the WLA.
Elyas asks Bractor where they may find a source on legendary creatures.
Wil wonders if he knows any Steelbiters. He vaguely recalls hearing about the Steelbiter family from his previous sojourn in Dirt City. He recalls that they are a respectable dwarven family, but doesn't know anything else.
Mak cracks a joke at Falco's expense, and tries to remain as discreet as possible.
Rolth tells Falco that joining the WLA would be a great, and offers to help. He narrows the field on Elyas's query, and asks about engineering.
Kiwina prepares his spells for the day, and helps with the research. He is able to ascertain that they won't be heard in a fight, while inside the warehouse.
Ayotnom also realizes the thick walls will deaden the sound, and he also considers joining the WLA.
At Elyas and Rolth's queries, Bractor strokes his beard for a moment, as though he was deep in thought. "Legendary creatures you say, and in particular beholders, now that is indeed an odd query. Crazy thing is I just finished reading a book about beholders. I find reading up on the strange, rare and unusual to be an interesting way to pass the time, now that my adventuring days are drawing to their end. I can't say for sure if they exist, but this here book has a painted illustration of one of them beasties."
"Not the most attractive thing are they? Well, I don't know if it's true or not, but the author says he encountered one, and painted the image from first hand observation. The author does give a few details as to the beholders abilities, but he does add that he isn't sure if this is a complete list or not, as he and his comrades fled the scene, after engaging the creature, and apparently getting their backsides handed to them. He claims that they can fly, and always seem to be at least a foot or so off the ground. He also claims that each of its 10 eye stalks can create a specific magical ray. He gives a list of 5 the rays he personally encountered before tucking tail and running. The list of spell like abilities he experienced are Sleep, Fear, Telekinesis, Charm Person, and Charm Monster. He also adds that whenever the thing looked at them with it's big eye, their magic seemed to stop working. Now the author doesn't say it, but I would wager the thing would be difficult to sneak up on with all those eyes.
Now of course I say take this all with a grain of salt, as the authenticity is questionable, but I have to know why the interest in such an obscure creature?"

Once so returned to privacy, he wil inquire whether his fellows have any ideas for furthering our investigation. "To recap our task, we have been asked to find out what sort of creature they have in the warehouse, who the creature answers to, and what it might have to do with their smuggling operation, and report all that to Drola. If we can kill it, all the better, we're to bring back a piece to Drola. First we need to deal with the guards during the distraction. Can anyone paralyze or otherwise incapacitate them quickly? Elyas asks if the author says where he encountered the beholder, and shares with Steelbiter that they heard a rumor that a local spotted one, and they wanted to know if that was possible.
Kiwina adds to Elyas's explanation and asks what havoc could such a creature cause in the city.
Falco adds to Mak's pun and thanks Rolth for offering to help. he decides to kill two birds with one stone. He asks if it's possible to communicate with a beholder.
Wil asks his friends what their mission parameters are, and states that the beholder seems to have some anti-magic ability.
Rolth asks a few questions and thanks Bractor for his time. He waits for anyone who would like to join the WLA and than suggests they head back to the ship. He recaps the mission, and then asks if anyone can magically incapacitate the guards, and asks for the others thoughts.
Tsak offers some strategic advice, and then suggests they share what they have gleaned with Drola, and considers was to make a beholder encounter more advantages to them. Maybe Drola would know why they would bring on a beholder, and maybe that would add to their knowledge of the creatures powers.
Ayotnom shares a direct answer to Bractor's question.
Mak figures the safest place to attack would be from below, but it would take a very small individual to fit within a 1 foot space.
Bractor whistles to his teeth when he hears that the Petals may be facing a beholder. "I know that beholders are consider fairy tale, but based on this author's writings, I see no reason not to believe the authenticity of his words. You see this book is a memoir of his adventures, and his description of all the other creatures he encountered are spot on, plus many of his encounters have been verified by the League. As far as communicating with such a beast is concerned, I would say it is likely as legend says they are highly intelligent. And as far as the eyes, well the author says the rays went in the direction the eye was looking. I would assume that the center eye's anti-magic beam would only fire in the direction the beholder is facing, however since the eye-stalks can literally look in any direction, I would assume the rays that come from them can fire in any direction as well."

They can run away. Somehow I'm thinking anything that agrees to work with that organization is going to have similar views and be uncooperative at best, and deadly at worst. If we don't want to engage it we should decide now because once we are faced with it our goal should be clear. Leave and report, or remove the creature as a threat to all good people."

Falco is quiet during this conversation. For the first time since joining up with the Petals at the Taurnament he feels his adventuring days could end quickly. Many battles have just come to them and that is kind of comforting. Even the dragons he had a place in his mind for but this, this has him scared.

He nods at Mak's assessment of the creature's likely motivations and attitude towards peaceful negotiation, but is aware that Rolth will probably want to try to talk to it anyway. Kiwina asks if the report can clarify a couple of things. First, does the creature's anti-magic eye provide an area where its other eyes don't work? Attacking from the front might suit a skilled fighter if he didn't have to worry about the beams. And second, are magical effects restored after the anti-magic eye moves on?
Beyond that, he agrees with Tsak -- attack from all sides if they decide to attack.

DM Jeremy Tuesday March 28th, 2023 10:41:54 AM
Mak isn't encouraged by Bractor's words. He suggests getting as ready as possible.
Wil considers the idea of befriending the beholder, and has a small argument with himself.
Mak asks Bractor if the author comments about a willingness to converse and negotiate. to his friends he suggests they should assume it probably won't want to negotiate, so it will have to either flee or die if they decide to engage it, and they need to decide now if they are going to.
Elyas asks for the name of the author and whether or not he may still be alive.Elyas wonders if they should report to Drola. He worries they won't be able to kill the beholder, but isn't sure a second hand report is enough for the House of Keys to go on, or if it fulfills their end of the bargain.
Falco is scared for the first time since joining the Petals.
Tsak's opinion hasn't changed, and he sees their course of action clearly.
Kiwina asks if the anti-magic eye beam cancels the eye-stalk beams pointing in that direction, and if the magic returns when it looks a different direction. He agrees with Tsak.
Ayotnom states that if the beholder is here against it's will maybe they can free it and in so doing avoid bloodshed. He asks if they need to slay it or just make sure it can't be used for nefarious purposes.
Rolth agrees with talking to Drola than making their move tonight. He agrees with the strategy of fanning out, and offers to make the frontal assault, though he would appreciate some company.
Bractor answers the remaining questions, "The chaps name was Jonny B., and he wrote this memoir 50 years ago, which was after a productive adventuring career. He was human, so I would say it's safe to assume he is no longer with us. Jonny B. doesn't give many details about the anti-magic beam, but he does say it seemed to function like an anti-magic field, only it's a cone instead of a circle, so one can assume it only negates the magic while the magic is in the cone, and I would assume it it negates the eye-stalk rays as well, but that's just my opinion. I probably should mention that this encounter is in the first quarter of the book, and that the book is written chronologically. Hopefully that helps."

Mak suggests a suggestion that the guards check in on the fire to make sure it doesn't spread. He is encouraged that Jonny B. survived and says they should go talk to Drola.
Falco hopes that Jonny B's intel is good. he is encouraged that his beholder encounter was earlier in Jonny B's career.
Elyas thanks Bractor for his time and agrees it's time to go speak with Drola.
Wil laughs at Falco's words, and than continues to argue with himself, until he goes quiet.
Tsak notices Falco's concern, figures they need to deal with the guards quickly. He keeps his eyes peeled as they head into House of Keys territory.
Kiwina is a bit concerned about visiting the House of Keys, as they tend to have a distinctive look.
Ayotnom suggests only sending Petals that don't stick out to speak with Drola.
Rolth agrees with going to Drola, and is fine with only sending the less conspicuous among them.
Mak breaks down who the least conspicuous among them is. He figures Elyas qualifies, and maybe himself, though he suggest sending Wil, as Wil's crazy tendencies are a mystery to most, Mak included.
Bractor waves good bye to the Petals as they depart and goes back to whatever he was doing, and now the Petals are faced with a few choices. Do they travel to Keys territory as a group, in hopes of contacting Drola, do they send only the least conspicuous, in hopes of not drawing attention to themselves, do they say "to heck with it" and prepare for tonight's activities, or do they do something completely unexpected, causing their DM to have a nervous breakdown.

Mak is willing to go, if that is what everyone else wants, he suggests meeting up later, maybe at the ship.
Elyas offers to go with Mak, and suggest something he considers crazy.
Wil's attention is piqued when something crazy is suggested. He wonders what there might be to do, and considers heading to the Temple of Wardd.
Tsak wants to dine while Mak and Elyas are away. Maybe a traveling circus would make a good cover for them.
Kiwina thinks Elyas can take care of himself, and Wil knows the culture, but the reason for their going can determine if they need to go in person, or get someone to go for them. He thinks Tsak would also blend in, but maybe not his kitty.

Falco is able to chill a bit, now back on board the ship. He realizes the Petals have been in some tough situations in the past and have come out on top.
Kiwina is comforted a bit by Ramsey's assessment of the harbor, though he does realize that corruption can still be present.
As the 3 taurs and beastfolk relax on board the ship, the 3 humans and half-orc find themselves being lead, at crossbow point, through House of Keys territory. Sure, they realize that it is all a bluff, for the sake of prying eyes. but being lead at crossbow point is always a little unnerving. I mean there is always a chance, however small, that one of the crossbowmen could accidentally fire his weapon. Their discomfort is for not it turns out as the crossbowmen lead the 4 Petals into a simple warehouse. Looking around, the 4 Petals see that the warehouse is loaded with a variety of trade goods ranging from the mundane to the exotic. DC 15 knowledge local Highlight to display spoiler: {You have heard that the House of Keys are one of the few houses that are on the up and up, here in dirt city, and you can assume that the goods here are legitimately gained.} Upon entering the warehouse, the crossbowmen drop their ruse and lower their weapons. They lead you to the rear of the warehouse where you find Drola expecting some goods, and reading a ship manifesto. "Everything seems to be in order, thank-you Flasor." she says to elf standing next to her. She hands the manifesto to the one she called Flasor, and than turns her attention to the approaching 4 Petals.

'we met a source who told us that the House of Teeth agents were seen bringing the creature in to the warehouse. The creature they saw was an incredibly rare monster known as a Beholder, thought by many to be a myth.
The warehouse holding a Beholder makes things a bit more complicated. They are said to be very powerful magical creatures that would not be simple to take down in a fight. They are quite destructive and use magical elemental attacks, so a fight would likely grow into something quite large that would endanger the people around the warehouse (including the wonderful little chicken establishment, thank you for that recommendation by the way).
On the other hand, breaking in to just view the beholder and return news of it to you would likely be met with skepticism from you or your superiors as most people don't believe these creatures even exist.
So with that in mind we decided to meet with you first, to tell you what is in the warehouse and get your counsel on what the best way to proceed would be, as well as clarifying what exactly you would need us to do in order to help us with our previous request, knowing now what we will face in that warehouse.

Drola's voice looses all skepticism, and turns dead serious, "If your source is right, however, and if the House of Teeth have somehow found and recruited such a creature, this is ill news for Dirt City. According to legend, beholders are cunning, powerful, and worst of all evil to their core. I have no idea what sort of nefarious plot the Teeth are planning, but if your source is accurate, Dirt City will suffer. I know our original bargain was for an exchange of information, but in light of what you have told me, I need to ask you to verify your source. If you recall, our original bargain was an exchange of information, and that hasn't been altered, as the information you have given me hasn't been fully vetted. Tovy is quick to join the petals and crew onboard the Rose where he shares his story, "I apologize for being melodramatic, of course I was speaking to myself, and didn't realize I had an audience, nice ship by the way. It really isn't that big a deal in the greater scheme of things. You see I'm in love with a certain lass, and I was planning on proposing tomorrow night. I've planned this out for months, even ordering a ring from exotic parts, the southern continent no less, as I want to give my beloved something unique, a ring that only she has. As my merchant ship was scheduled to be heading to Plateau City, I commissioned the ring to be teleported there, via the teleportation circle there, and had the captain retrieve it for me. Things went fine, until the ship came in contact with pox. so far no one has developed any symptoms, thank the gods, but they still have 2 weeks of a 4 week quarantine left, and as such must remain at sea, and can't be boarded, or so the harbor master tells me, even though they arrived today. Besides the ring, the ship contains goods for my store, as well as a few special order items that now I'm going to have to tell the buyers they have to wait, and I'm not sure for how long, because if someone onboard the Blue Dolphin develops symptoms, the quarantine is extended to 4 weeks after the last crew member recovers, showing no symptoms, or gods forbid, they all perish. I can't even contemplate the latter as many onboard are friends, and have been working for me for years. I offered to pay a cleric to sail out to the ship and cast detect disease, but the harbor master says "Rules are rules", and when I asked if I could at least hire a cleric to board the Blue Dolphin to heal anyone who may get the pox, I was again rebutted. I get the feeling that the harbor master is one of those odd few who distrusts magic. Anyway, I guess I'll have to be patient and hope for the best. Thanks for your concern. By the way, you are truly a noble lot."
Ramsey hears Tovy's tale and says, "Sirs, While you are out and about tonight, I could secretly row out to this Blue Dolphin, retrieve the ring for your friend here, and even deliver a cleric to the ship if so desired. Elyas feels for Tovy, but doesn't want to break the rules.

Falco says he is a little busy but Tovy should have no problem finding a cleric for hire.
Ayotnom wonders why the harbor master is such a stickler for the rules, and asks if Tovy has any enemies.
Rolth suggests using mage hand to transfer the ring.
Kiwina is inclined to let Ramsey help Tovy, but wonders about the harbor masters reaction to transferring quarantined goods, and whether he can be paid to look the other way.
Tsak finds Rolth's words a little difficult to swallow, famous last words and all, however he is happy to help Tovy get the ring to give to his love, just not until tomorrow.
Tovy scratches his head and looks wide eyed for a moment than says, "You don't think he would stoop so low do you? At one time I had competition at winning my lovely Rola's heart. Like me Krinton Greentop was smitten by the lovely Rola, but for reasons only the gods can understand, she chose me. No, though Krinton easily has the wealth to pull off such a bribe, I doubt he would act so wrongly, he has always been a stand up gnome."
His face returns to normal as Tovy says, "To be honest gents, I don't give half a flip about the normal cargo, even the special order items. The customers have waited this long, they can wait another couple of weeks. Even the ring is only for my personal happiness, and I can easily head to the jeweler's and pick up a nice ring to use as a stand in, until the quarantine is over, though your offer is greatly appreciated. That leaves only one thing, the cleric. I'm pretty sure my cousin Tanbor would be happy to sit on the Blue Dolphin for a couple of weeks, if I offered to pay him a decent salary to do so. He's a currently unemployed cleric of relatively decent quality, but how can I smuggle him onboard the Blue Dolphin? The ring could easily be lowered via a string of some sort, since your man will be their, and I will pay you handsomely for the service. These are men who I've known for years, heck if Rola says yes, I will probably ask Captain Victor to be my best man. The thought that they could all succumb to the pox, especially when it can so easily be circumvented, is overwhelming. The cover of darkness could easily hide such an operation, but I understand your reluctance, though I beg you to consider doing this."

Elyas still isn't fond of breaking the quarantine, but won't stop Ramsey.
"Thank you sirs," Ramsey says, "You guys are always preforming good deeds, now I can do my part. I appreciate the offer Ayotnom, but I believe you Petals will be busy else where when I am delivering this Tanbor to the Blue Dolphin, and retrieving Tovy's ring."
Tovy says, "Thank you sirs, your help is greatly appreciated. I will bring Tanbor here after dark, and then Ramsey here can deliver him when you feel the time is right.
At around 10:00, Tovy returns with a slightly rotund gnome with purple hair, whom Tovy introduces as his cousin Tanbor. He than thanks you and departs, leaving Tanbor with you.
As the time approaches, Ramsey lowers a rowboat, and he and Tanbor climb aboard. They take up the oars and soon hidden by the darkness.

Mak hoped the distraction works, as he prepares to drink a potion of invisibility. He notices the weakness of the guards.
Falco also notices the the guards are weak thugs, and plans to use stealth to enter the warehouse.
Wil suggests using a touch of idiocy.
Mak gives some instructions.
Elyas casts see invisibility on himself and suggests making a magical door in the rear of the warehouse. Elyas gets a hero point for coming up with a clever work around.
Kiwina figures the guards would only be good for sounding the alarm and like Elyas's idea.
Rolth likes Elyas's idea and prepares to cast some buffs.
Ayotnom offers invisibility to whoever wants it, and suggest they could easily overpower the guards.
Tsak asks Ayotnom for the offered invisibility. He too likes the magical rear door idea.
The Petals have come up with a plan that should work. They are able to move towards the rear of the warehouse nonchalantly, and no one seems to notice them, though Falco and the taurs do gain a few second glances, as such individuals are rarely seen in Dirt City. The attention they draw is more the "I never thought I would see such a creature!" kind and less the "what are they doing here?!" kind. The petals are able to find an inconspicuous place to wait until the distraction begins.
On que all heck breaks loose, when the cry of "Fire" fills the air. It takes a moment or two for everyone to drop what they are doing and run towards the blaze, but soon the Petals find themselves alone in the rear of the warehouse. Elyas casts his spell, and an opening appears in the warehouse. Peering inside, you see that the place is dark, though everyone can make out the images of crates filled with stuff, lined up on shelves, which extend to the 25 ft ceiling. You see a dim light up ahead, and you estimate the light source to be about 75 ft from your location, though you can't make it out clearly, as there are shelves of good blocking your view.

Light spills in from the 5’x8’ passage Elyas magically opened, illuminating a short distance into the room. Debris is strewn about much of the floor. The ceiling is 40’ high.
There were two light sources - two torches sit in sconces flanking a door to your left, but these lights suddenly wink out, though their light had little effect in so great a room. About that time, Mak finds he is visible and Mak and Elyas can no longer see through this darkness.
Those outside peer into the dark doorway.
A deep, booming voice can be hear from the far end of the room. ”Well, well, well. What have we here? This is a new way to enter. You three are new to me, so tell me who you are and what you want? What house are you with today? And how the devil did you get in here?”
As it speaks, a few creatures float down from the ceiling. You can barely make them out in the light spilling in from outside. They looks like a pale, jellyfish-like creatures floating gently in the air, two long eyestalks extending from either side of its puckered mouth. They stop about 10’ off the floor.
The deep voice says something in a language you don’t understand, but the tone is commanding, maybe even threatening.

There are no other light sources in this room.)

Mak blanched. In the dark and with an anti magic eye likely trained right on him, he decided to start walking toward the voice as he reached into a pocket and withdrew a goblin seal. As he did so he wondered what a beholder would look like with a fish face. "We've come to pay our respects." Mak lied rather convincingly. "I have this gift for you in my hand, but it's magic doesn't seem to work at the moment."
In Mak's other hand he held his family rapier, now inert due to the same field that was preventing his potions from working. In his mind Mak planned to stay inside that field so as soon as he could see the beast he'd stay in front of that large central eye. His plan was to distract the creature, so he kept talking. DM Mark - Behold! Thursday April 13th, 2023 1:12:33 PM Mak moves forward in the direction of the voice, offering a “gift” in one hand and his other on his weapon. Kiwina moves in, finding the debris on the floor bothersome. His low light vision extends the light coming in from the passwall effect, but it cannot see whatever is speaking from the other end of the room. Falco does his best to hide in the shadows. Elyas compliments whatever is speaking, offering to help the creature if it is being held here. Rolth follows suit, adding that the group is its own house. Tsak moves in. His perception is good enough to see Falco where he is hiding, and he steps protectively in front of the little owlman. Ayotnom steps forward a bit, but still outside and uses detect magic as he looks in the door. He detects magic, but does not know more yet. Wil moves toward Kiwina and attempts to detect magic. He detects nothing, which is odd because he knows the centaur has plenty of magic on him in that direction.
Mak and Rolth and anyone making a Perception check DC 30: Highlight to display spoiler: {You know this creature is probably in AE-AF, 18-19 and that it’s about 20’ off the floor.}
Suddenly, the passwall disappears and the room is plunged into darkness. Rolth and Tsak alone are able to see 60’ with their darkvision (neither is based on magic,) but everyone else is blind in the darkness unless they can see by some non-magical means. Tsak and Rolth can see the one floating jelly-fish like creature floating in the air above Falco and Tsak. It seems to be looking at Tsak.
For Ayotnom, the passage Elyas opened simply vanishes and all he sees is a stone wall. He can sense there is still magic there on his side, but the effect is not there.
The voice again echos across the large room. Once again it growls something in Aklo.
Then continues in Common.
”Ahh, ha ha. You are your own house here in Dirt City! How intriguing. Do tell me then, what house that is and what business you have barging in here? As for what house I work with, well, if you don’t know what house controls this place by now you are rather bad at this.
“Liberate me? I would not be here if I did not wish to be. The great Volsuqelx would not be a prisoner. I provide … advice. So tell me, how will your house change this place so that I may roam the streets in peace? Perhaps I should ally with your house instead. What does your house do here in Dirt City. I mean, aside from running around liberating everyone. Mah ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha. The House of Help, the newest house in Dirt City! Ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha. Oh that’s good!
”If you bring a gift, little man, you may leave it and go. But leave through that doorway over there. And of course, go with my deepest gratitude.
“But if you mean to attack me, well, then this will be a short meeting for you.”
The ceiling is 40’ high. There is debris on the floor that makes some of the area encumbered terrain where noted - pieces of crates, old bones, trash, etc. The pungent, acrid stench remains, but not so much that you’re alarmed by any immediate threat the smell might pose.
Be sure to note what spells you have cast that affect others and that affect you so I don’t miss that.

Mak was certain that one of those eyes was causing this, so he pretended blindness. It wasn't such a reach for him because he was practically blind. (Using Mak's previous check of 38 to identify it's position). He reasoned that if his magic failing him was an effect of one of those eyes he'd make certain the creature couldn't look in two directions at once as he double moved near the far wall. As he passed beneath the creature he counted on his Darkvision potion to once more start working, or at the very least his friends being beyond it's effect as the beast focused on him.
"Here it is Mak held out the goblin seal in his hand as he placed it on the ground in front of him."
Mak was waiting for the creature to take it's eye off him. As soon as it did and he could see once more he grabbed the hem of his cape and vanished in a cloud of smoke. He hoped it would take a moment to find him again once his invisibility started functioning again.

Tsak is a little flummoxed. He can hear that the thing is somewhere in the south-west part of the room. He can also see that Falco is stuck, and that there is a nasty little flying creature behind him. If he pushes Falco in front of him to protect him from the little nasty, then the big nasty might have a crack, and vice-versa if he keeps the bird man behind him. Decisions. As he walks roughly straight forward Tsak veers slightly, reaches out a long arm and drags Falco in behind him as best he can. He continues to move straight forward keeping the pair of them in the aisle between the junk that covers the floor to the left and right. Out the corner of his mouth he whispers to Falco Something nasty is floating along behind you, do you have a knife on you?
(OOC I moved Falco on the map to be behind Tsak - if Falco or the DM don't want that then apologies and move him back...)

He suggests leaving and tells Volsuqelx he’s never heard of him, asking if he goes by another name. Falco moves carefully into the room. Mak makes a double move. At the end of his move, he finds that he can see again with his darkvision and is once again invisible. He puts down the Goblin Seal and tells Volsuqelx it is an offering. As he looks up, he can see a large, bulbous creature about 30’ up. It has a large central eye above a broad slash of a mouth, and he sees ten wriggling eyestocks that jerk around as they are constantly looking in different directions. In addition, he notices that Volsuqelx seems to be rapidly blinking in and out of sight as it floats above him. (He cannot activate his Cape of the Mountebank though because that requires a standard action and he already took a double move.) Wil tries to move in the darkness (but where on the map?). As he does, he taunts the voice in the darkness, and asks about the other creatures here. Rolth moves forward, pretending to know Volsuqelx. As he goes, he tries to determine if his magic is working again. Rolth can likewise see Volsuqelx floating in the air, though the creature is blinking in and out of existence. Kiwina tries moving along the wall. He has no idea if the debris on the floor is flammable, but suspects it is not. Tsak moves carefully forward, taking Falco in tow. He warns Falco of the floating jellyfish, and suggests that Falco arm himself. Ayotnom casts Fly on himself, waiting to see if the Passwall effect will appear again.
A voice in the darkness says, ”Ahhh. A provocation. Excellent. Let us see where this goes. And certainly, lay down your arms at any time and perhaps we can continue our conversation.”
Volsuqelx barks something in Alklo.
The weird jellyfish-like creatures move fairly fast through the air. Three hover about 10’ off the floor near Kiwina, Rolth and Tsak, and squirt something awful and really stinky. Kiwina, Rolth and Tsak must each must make a DC 19 FORT save or be sickened.
The two near Wil and Elyas come in rather close. Up close, they must succeed on a ranged touch attack, which both do. Wil and Elyas must each make a DC 19 FORT save or be nauseated by this up close attack.
One also sprays where it thought Mak might be, but misses.
Then Volsuqelx laughs a loud booming laugh as it moves. Mak can see that it has closed it’s central eye, and when it does so the antimagic effect goes away. The passwall is again open, allowing some light into the room (equivalent to torch light.)
Those that can see notice he seems to blink in and out of existence. Beams shoot out from it’s eyestalks.
One beam hits Rolth - Make a DC 20 Will save or be Charmed as Charm Person. One beam misses Rolth. One beam hits Kiwina - Make a DC 20 Will save or be asleep. One beam misses Kiwina. One beam misses Tsak. One beam hits Tsak - Make a DC 20 Fort Save or be turned to stone.
Volsuqelx is blinking. Physical attacks and spells miss him 50% of the time.
Lighting is tricky, so let me clarify. Anything highlighted in yellow is a lightsource, both those Continual Flame torches and the open Passwall are providing 20’ of normal light, and another 20’ of dim light. Double that if you have low-light vision. Remember that counting squares means every diagonal direction count as 1.5 square. Right now, Volsuqelx is in normal darkness.
Dim Light: In an area of dim light, a character can see somewhat. Creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness. Darkness: In areas of darkness, creatures without darkvision are effectively blinded. Characters with darkvision can see lit areas normally as well as dark areas within 60 feet. A creature can’t hide within 60 feet of a character with darkvision unless it is invisible or has cover.
The ceiling is 40’ high. There is debris on the floor that makes some of the area encumbered terrain where noted - pieces of crates, old bones, trash, etc. The pungent, acrid stench remains, but not so much that you’re alarmed by any immediate threat the smell might pose.
When you post, be sure to note what spells you have cast that affect others and that affect you so I don’t miss that. I cannot take into account effects that I don’t see listed.

Elyas struggles heroically to resist the stench, and calling on his reserves he is able to do so. Fortunately, Kiwina created some light so now he can see the beholder enough to cast Dispel Magic to end the Blink effect. But even though his ability to see invisibility improves his odds, his spell is cast just as the Beholder blinks out, and Dispel Magic has no effect (only a 20% miss chance instead of 50%, but still only rolled 9.) Undeterred, Elyas moves and whips around to fire a lightning bolt, catching two of the jelly creatures. Both creatures fail their saves, taking 41 points of damage. Mak has planned for this. Instantly, his sword vanishes, and he is able to pull both his bow and quiver from his haversack. Tsak is affected by the creature’s spray. The stench sickens him Wil resists the stench effects and casts a Wind Wall to affect the jellyfish-like creature that attacked him. (I know it was meant to be at square AY 12, so I placed it on the map. Let me know if this was wrong.) Falco casts Blindness on the beholder, but the creature makes its save. Rolth looses one image from the jelly’s spray (individual targeted effect) and a second image from the Charming ray. He sings to bolster his friend’s efforts. Ayotnom flies away from the opening in the wall and moves toward the front door of the warehouse. ( I moved him around the building to approximate flying over it, so he may assume he is above the building if he wants.)
Elyas movement provokes an attack from the jellyfish-like creature. It hits him, injecting him with something that burns for 2 points of damage, and seems to continue to burn under his skin.
The jellys that were hit by Elyas’ lightning withdraw.
The other jelly’s move in for an attack. Jelly f3 attacks Tsak and stings him for 1 point of damage. Jelly f4 attacks Rolth and though it’s a near miss (17) it still removes a third image. Jelly f5 attacks Kiwina and misses. Jelly f6 attacks where it thinks Mak is and misses.
The beholder growls something threatening in Auran. Then he moves a bit as he roars with laughter. He is 20’ off the floor. ”Wa ha ha ha. Methinks the House of Help may need some help. Let us see.”

You now know the pungent, acrid stench is from these jellyfish-like creatures.

Mak took a step back and brought his bow up to point at the floating behemoth above him and took a long silent breath. This next bit was going to be tricky and make him a target, so with two arrows loaded on the string he pulled and released.
Visible once more, Mak's first two arrows went zipping by the beholder and struck the ceiling of the warehouse. "By Ga'al's sap filled veins." he cursed as he loaded another arrow before the evil creature could react. His second arrow rocketed upwards and Mak thought it hit, but just so, so he wasn't confident he'd harmed it much. The third arrow clearly missed the creature, whether it was due to the blinking or Mak's haste in getting the arrows away was unknown. Mak fumbled a little getting the last arrow nocked, but when he released it he smiled. Unless that floating monstrosity blinked away he had it dead to rights. Less than a second later he saw the arrow bury itself deep in the fleshy globe.
Mak steeled himself as he knew that he'd now be considered a threat.

(OOC: I'm confused. Is not there a back door that goes directly to the warehouse and avoids the guards? I was trying for that door. The way the map looks it looks like there are guards which lead to an alley where the entrance to the warehouse is or is that a corridor inside the warehouse?)
Ayotnom doesn't know what to do. He'll never get to help his friends fighting the beholder if he has to deal with the guards outside. He thought he could bypass them by heading to the door leading directly into the warehouse. If there isn't any other way to get in he'll continue moving that way, but he doesn't really see how he'll ever join the ongoing fight.

One of the floating jellyfish swooped down and sprayed Mak with some kind of noxious substance, but Mak threw up an arm at the last moment and managed to block most of it. Having only a hint of a whiff of the foul smelling gunk. He was distracted momentarily but the black ray that shot out of an eyestalk got his attention. Instinctively Mak knew that wasn't good and wrenched his body to one side in an effort to avoid the ray as it sliced through a leg. Had the beam been allowed to linger it almost certainly would have cost him that limb, but his quickness prevented any catastrophic damage.
Mak's bravery only went so far, but his fear was for his friend that was flying next to the great beast. He loaded two arrows and fired them. They left the bow side by side as the second quick shot zipped through the beast as it blinked out for a moment. The last two simply went wide.

Tsak shoots at the beholder the previous round, hitting it once for 4 damage. This round he strikes at the jellyfish-like creatures, but fails to hit (AC 29). Falco moves to heal Rolth, but the liontaur is flying too far above Falco to reach. Mak manages to avoid most attacks and shoots at the beholder, but his arrows bounce off the beholder’s tough hide. Rolth hovers in the air, attacking the beholder and hitting it twice. Wil summons a Lantern Archon. He instructs it to create a Continual Flame effect on something, but chimes back in its mystical language that it cannot do that as a summoned creature (please see the spell description for Summon Monster.) Then he creates a Spiritual Weapon near him, ready to use it to strike anything that comes near. (Note - Wil must direct it to attack something. It will not stand guard. Please see the spell description on this.) Kiwina manages to resist the charming effect, but succumbs to the sleep. Ayotnom bursts in. He charges toward the beholder, striking at it with his rapie though his blows miss. Elyas calls on his heroic reserves to make his save, and fires a similar effect back at the beholder trying to turn it to stone.
Elyas takes 4 more points of damage from the previous sting, and Rolth takes 2 more damage from the previous sting.
Elyas’ spell proves to be effective. A momentary look of terror is made permanent as the beholder is transformed into stone! If falls with a deep thud, barely missing Rolth. As it does so, it rolls to the side a bit and three stone eyestalks snap off. You hear a tinkling sound as a ring falls off one of the broken eyestalks. You see two other rings as well.
Once the great Volsuqelx falls, you hear the jelly’s chattering in Aklo. Strangely, they withdraw from those they were attacking.
A brief moment of quiet ends as the door to the south suddenly bursts open! Four shadowy figures rush toward you. Clad in dark leathers, they’re moving unusually fast, though the debris slows them a bit.
One of them says, ”You’ll pay for what you’ve cost us. The guards are on their way. You mess with the Teeth, you get bit!”
Two reach Wil and attack him with Kukri knives but miss.
Two more move toward Tsak and Elyas. They each throw a shuriken, missing Tsak but hitting Elyas for 3 damage. As they fly through the air, you can see each shuriken is lit by Continual Flame, and they give off light where noted on the map.

—--------------------------------------------- Lighting is tricky, so let me clarify. Anything highlighted in yellow is a lightsource, both those Continual Flame torches and the open Passwall are providing 20’ of normal light, and another 20’ of dim light. Double that if you have low-light vision. Remember that counting squares means every diagonal direction counts as 1.5 square.
You now know the pungent, acrid stench is from these jellyfish-like creatures.
When you post, be sure to note what spells you have cast that affect others and that affect you so I don’t miss that. I cannot take into account effects that I don’t see listed.

Mak knew the beholder could likely be restored given enough potent magic, so he moved up next to it as his rapier appeared magically in his hand and swiped at the stone eye stalks with his admantium blade in an attempt to cut them off the stoned creature.
OOC: A rapier actually has a cutting edge even though the fighting style uses lunges. Mak is trying to cut the beast apart in an attempt to deliver a coup de grace with his adamantine weapon. Otherwise this round he does 18-2(sickened) + 7(if its still evil) or 23 hp.
Edit: After some research I've discovered that a Beholder might not have a discernable anatomy, be immune to critical hits, and possible to coup de graces as well. Mak's attempts might end up being an effort to slice a large enough chunk off it to keep it from surviving a restoration to flesh. I'd actually suggest rolling it into the portable hole and dumping it in the ocean.

Tsak has no idea whether the stone beholder will come back to life or not, or what the flying jelly's will do. But there are new foes, and they're on the ground. He puts his crossbow away (noted on char sheet I used 7 bolts) and draws his sword, then waits for something to get in range. Charging doesn't seem like a good idea as his stomach is still threatening to jump out his mouth and the sting that stung is still stinging. Goodness knows what that is doing to him...

Elyas briefly celebrates when the Beholder falls down as a statue, but that is short-lived as new threats immediately appear and start attacking.
Since the beholder fell to the first spell, elyas held off on using his quickened fire spell. now seems like a good time to use it though!
He starts by casting a Chain Lightning over the largest group of enemies. Primary target is floating jellyfish f1. the lightning bounces between that jelly, f4, f5, S1, S2, and S4 [Each target needs a Reflex save for half damage. Primary target needs a DC 25 save, the others need a DC 23. full damage is 47 each]
He then uses the quickened rod to cast a scorching ray at the Slayer that threw something at him (S3) 3 rays burst from his hand towards the new enemy. ray 1: 16 vs touch AC for 13 fire damage ray 2: 18 vs touch AC for 17 fire damage ray 3: natural 1, auto miss.

Rolth sees the jellies first regroup, then start to leave and wonders aloud, "Do you think that the jellies were charmed into service to the Beholder by one of its eyestalks.? It tried to do that to us. No matter, let's kill these insolent chaps, who seem to have bitten off far more than they can chew." Seeing that Mak is making sure the beholder stays dead, he shouts, "Bring some of the eyestalks as a trophy!" Seeing Wil a bit beleaguered, Rolth makes a flying liontaur charge over to help out, landing near S1, singing all the while.

That opponent lays dead and smoking on the floor. Wil fires a hand crossbow at S2, hitting him for 2 points. Then he directs (move action) the spiritual weapon to also attack the man, and it strikes once for 6 points of damage. Wil’s use of a ranged weapon draws an AOO from S1 and S2. On getting to Kiwina's slumbering form Tsak pokes at it with his foot Wakey wakey Captain. Time to rise and shine. Wouldn't do to let the crew see you slacking off like this.
The ranger uses the light from the shuriken to check the centaur over and make sure there are no bleeds, broken bones or other issues that need to be dealt with.
We might have a few minutes of peace, but the teeth wil be back in numbers. Are we heading out the back door? And what's the plan from there? Back to the Rose or accomodation in one of the other quarters, which would be safer if they come after us?
