Drack (Chris J) - hp 35/35 - AC 18
Monday April 3rd, 2023 8:13:09 AM

Drack says nothing as his friends succinctly express his reservations. Once Gnubert speaks, he chimes in. “Breathing underwater is one thing. Swinging a sword or casting a spell is another. On top of that, we would be going to fight a possible underwater war when we don’t even really know why they did what they did. In my opinion, the best course of action is to use our resources to determine why it occurred. That’s all I have to say on the matter presently.”

Diplomacy check on his last statement 17

New DM-Ryan: Maybe a drink instead.
Monday April 3rd, 2023 11:08:05 AM

Mole has said his pieces and heads to a tavern to await what the other decide.

Mortimer gives a hard pass on the plan.

After much thought Torryn only verbalized concern for her bow before agreeing with Mortimer.

A real plan is demanded by Manolo as well as wanting to speak with the manager, er, someone who has fought underwater.

A more traditional expression of what being a hero to a community is is presented by Gnubert.

While Drack wants to dig into the underlying root of the conflict. {ooc: what were you attempting with that diplomacy roll.}

Bearclaw sees this is not going as expected but some questions when death is on the line make sense.. “As far as fighting underwater you need weapons that stab. A longsword can be driven forward in a stab or a spear. Things you must swing, like a mace, not as useful. Bows are out but specific crossbows work. That is about all I can tell you. A trident works well and we have some of those.” He look at the faces of those left. “Well, I understand. Why not follow your friends to the tavern and I can talk to the others about what to do next.”

Torryn had no problem in following Mole. Her best weapon was her bow and they wanted to take that away - effectively. Gnubert's powerful words about faith were all well and good, but she rather felt it was 'blind' faith: something that would lead to a 'glorious' death. No, for her, there needed to be a LOT more explaining to do before she was venturing off land.

"They do know I can't swim, right?" She asked Spot before turning to her friends. "Anything want a ride to the tavern? Spot doesn't mind - especially if it's Loryn or Gunbert....no offense, guys." She concluded with an impish grin.

Torryn knew she wasn't the cleverest in the group, but even she could clearly see that currently there was no plan at all and even that was badly thought out.

Gnubert smiles inwardly as the others express their opinions, and reservations. The cleric accepts Torry's invitation to ride Spot to the tavern, "thank you! It seems to take me longer, and longer to make those steps as the day draws close to its end."

Gnubert walks into the the tavern, and greets the townsfolk with smiles, and handshakes. The cleric finally takes a seat with his friends, and waits for additional information.

"One thing I wanta make clear ... I'm not against makin' these chippy bastards pay, but we're NOT in the suicide business. First, we know nuthin' bout the size of this fish gang. The facts are this gang sunk a ship and murdered the whole bloody crew! How well are we gonna fair bein' thrown in the water completely starkers? We need ta be clever 'bout this."

Mortimer throws out some ideas and he hopes some of the brainy, clever types can answer.

"I've 'eard of magic that changes ya into another bloke, even these toadie, fish-faced bastards (they are humanoids). Think it's called Alter Self, can be made inta potions, yeah. Will give ya their swimmin' ability!" (Knowledge [Arcana]: 12)

He then thinks a little longer and his eyes go wide. During the festivals, several years ago, a group of gnomes brought a mechanical crab and had it performed for the crowds. The gnomes could operate it from the inside and take it underwater! "What was it called? Uhhh, Apparatus of the Crab! It's pinchers could snip those chum munchers in two!"

Drack follows the others to the tavern and sees Mole with a dozen mugs in front of him. He walks over to make sure they aren’t all empty and then grabs a full one. “Thanks Mole. Much appreciated. Everyone seems to be overlooking the basic question of why did they do this? It’s not what they usually do. Did this ship break some sort of long standing peace rule? If we can’t talk to them, is it possible to talk to the boats captain? Not that his corpse will be all that forthcoming.”

Mole, first to the bar, sets up a dozen nice cold mugs of ale.

Torryn has no problem heading to the tavern and gives Gnubert a ride. She thinks there is more explaining to be done, explaining by who is not so clear.

Ash has concerns about being able to cast spells underwater.

Manolo heads off to the tavern.

Mortimer starts brainstorming ideas of potions and even mentions a magical vehicle he had heard of.

Drack wants to explore the motivation behind the attack.

As you talk the tavern keeper approaches, looking uncomfortable. “Begging your pardon but I have to ask if it was really those fish folk causing trouble. You know this isn’t the first time, I lost my grandad to them when I was a little one. Terrible they come cause issues again. Well you lot know how to handle things I am sure. Next round is on me.”

Drack's point was a good one, but really, it was merely another part of the puzzle that they now faced. They needed information and lots of it. Just to slap on a ring and charge off into the waves, was not sensible.

Loryn has been quiet. This was a lot, and well it was a lot of if maybe and we're scared as far as the gnome thought about it. The merchant ship was not just off shore right? and frankly the Wold was a dangerous place. Things getting pokey every 40 years or so did not make it seem to be a good idea to head out and see if Windhorne could spearhead a war.

"A Merchant ship form elsewhere got attacked out at sea. I still see the best solution is to get him safely home so that the peoples actually wronged can decide what they want to do. What if there was some treaty that sure the fish nation has broken, but we are not the ones to counter with a declaration of war because of it. Water, blah blah blah. The rings and would render most of anything a moot point and we would obviously conduct a confirming test before heading deep. That does not bother nor certainly scare me. Want to be safe, be a farmer on the upper plateau."

Loryn pours a rare midday drink for himself and sits back in the chair with a mumble, "Humans are far to reactionary and rash."

Drack (Chris J) - hp 35/35 - AC 18

Drack says little until he finishes digesting what has been said, and what occurred. "I agree with you Loryn. Let's see what the council decides. If we get pulled into this, I will not be a fan. So far, they have not come ashore. My last basic question still stands. Why??. If we do need this to come to blows, We need to figure out a way to draw them onto dry land where we have an advantage."

"I still think its a good idea to attempt to talk with them first. It would not be out of the realm of possibility that the merchant ship did something that the fish folk took as a horrible affront."

DM-Ryan: Friendly Bar Keep
Wednesday April 5th, 2023 12:00:54 PM

Torryn thanks the barkeep and asks for more information.

Mortimer fills in some old information for the group (and the GM) and also asks what else might be remembered.

Ash asks if there was anyone else that would have been alive then around.

As they talk Manolo considers the motivation for the attack.

Loryn enjoys a rare midday drink while he opines on the situation. The idea of the water is less of a problem them being in the middle of a war.

Drack wants clarity and is unconvinced since trouble has not come to shore.

Mole recalls a bit about the sea-devils or Sahuagin. They can breathe above and below water and speak little to other races though most speak common. A very aggressive race they are particularly brutal to land dwellers, raiding for supplies and simple bloodshed. Rumors of large groups exist; it is most certainly a small group in the area..

The bartenders thinks for a moment. “Well I was a little fella at the time. People said lots of things, to me it sounds like the stores of orcs though wet I guess. Killing people for food, gold and just plain evil. I will think on who might have been around, my folks are both gone.”

He moves to help another pair but returns. “In his line of work you hear a lot of things. Your honest folks can you keep an eye on things while I get my partner. She is a touch older and honestly tends to pay more attention to the past that I do.”

"Many thanks, that is most helpful and appreciated." Torryn answered with one of her winning smiles. When he'd wandered off she turned her attention back to the table and her friends.

"Honestly, I don't think that ANY of our concerns are misplaced and it strikes me that knowledge and preparation are key if we are to undertake this task. IF it's a small group of raiders, we could - in theory - kill them, but I'd prefer to drive them off. If we can scare them away, they'll tell others not to come near here. Killing them all might invite some kind of retribution and an escalation of events."

She paused to think what all this meant. She wasn't as quick witted as most of the others and had a marked proclivity for impetuosity, so the pause was very much a product of Agratha's training.

"If it can be solved through diplomacy, we'll have to return with a wergild or justice will not be seen to be done. I think that as things stand, we've a lot of options - mainly because we just don't know enough about the situation and what we're dealing with. But, if it's any consolation - my Fey magic doesn't need any material components." It really wasn't much solace, but Torryn beamed as if she'd won first place in a dance competition - again.

Loryn tilts his head this way and that as the others talk and brainstorm ideas, always a good plan to a gnome. If you don't have multiple ideas, you might not ever have a solution. They didn't have a ship, or access to a ship, nor did any of them know how to navigate or sail a ship. He feels that is therefore, not going to be a viable option. The longboat, sure, but that just puts the group in deep water, looking for a superior water based foe. Loryn did not like that plan either. talking required meeting and thus has all of the earlier problems. It all ended Loryn right back to where he was starting, which he didn't overly like.

He Hmphs aloud and takes another small drink from his mug. " I'm going to have some additional conversations with Fris on what their cargo was, where the attack took place and what were the ports of call for the voyage. They weren't coming here and I still think this is something that the families and countryman of those who lost their lives need to run point on."

With that, Loryn excuses himself to go ask those questions of the surviving gnome merchant

DM-Ryan: Friendly Bar Keep

Torryn still has the same concerns and lays them out. Her feeling is still that diplomacy is needed.

Gnubert suggests that they use a ship as a decoy with them as the crew. Torryn is surprised to be nominated as captain.

Mortimer like Gnubert’s plan thinking the sahuagin will get greedy.

Ash, in a very mage moment, wants to blow up the boat with the sahuagin on it.

Manolo thinks that sailing the same basic path as used by the other boat will be the only way to gain attention.

Mole points out the very true fact that you will need a crew of some sort and again points out that he doesn’t think the group can handel this endeavor.

Loryn sees many flaws with the groups current majority plan and excuses himself.

As the party discusses the tavern owner returns with his partner. The woman is probably 15 to 20 years older than her business partner, putting her around seventy five.

“Your the new heroes?” she looks the group up and down “Well good luck to you as you go forward I guess.”

She moves to leave but is stopped by her partner. “Rose, don’t be like that, tell them about the sea-devils. Your the least talkative tavern owner I have ever met.”

“Right. Right. I don’t know everything but I can tell you a few hundred years ago the town was pretty much wiped out by these bastards. I know that something was done about that at the time and there have only been a few raids since then.” She looks at her partner for a second. “Samuel here lost his parents in the most recent, about fifty years back.”

“It was a smaller raid, sounds like they all were after the big one. The sea-devils were driven off and I know some folks, like you lot, went in he water and dealt with it at the time.”
She is about to wrap up but stops herself asking a simple question. “Did the council offer you gold or something to prepare?”

"Um...just rings that would permit us to breathe in the water." Torryn told her. It didn't seem all that helpful to her. Spot wasn't going to get a ring. Moving water wasn't easy. If it was easy, people wouldn't drown. So whilst they'd be able to 'not drown', moving - including fighting would be impaired. Dancers needed to move. It was hard to dance if you couldn't move. Loryn heads to interrogate the remaining survivor. He rattles off a few questions t Fifebriess.

“Oh my well yes. I work for Oldfoot Transit Authority out of Thisleport, we make sure the docks run smoothly and what not. I don’t really transport things I am more public relations to encourage traders and other towns to use Thisleport as a trading up. We cut travel time by accepting shipments and sending them on to where they need to be on ships going that way.”

He pauses to think for a moment. “I’m the junior member, well I was the junior member I guess. We were going to Plateau City to finalize a trade deal. I’m a people person you see, I work with people. If it wasn’t for my ring making me invisible I would be dead… this is just awful. I can’t go back out on the water for a while I think but you good folks can use the boat for a bit if you need.”

Drack says nothing to the abrupt and blunt Rose, but when they were advised of the councils request to meet with them in the morning, he simply responds "We will be there."

Following the unpleasant advice from Rose, and the Courier informing them of the meeting with the city council Drack starts making plans on what he would need for an underwater fight. His blade was curved, which didn't do all that well in a stabbing motion, so he would definitely need his short sword, and he would need to swap from his metal armor to leather. What he really needed was something to help him move freely and normally underwater, and he didn't think a potion would cut it. Didn't seem like something you could drink underwater.

"You smart spellcasters have any idea if you can drink a potion underwater, or if a magic item exists that allows free movement that's not a potion?"

Mortimer answers what little he knows about armor.

"Leather armor is light enough not ta hinder your swimming." Mortimer then pulls is cloak aside and shows off his mithral chain shirt (+1), his pride and joy. "Now it's a bit more pricey, but a mithral chain shirt is also light enough ta swim in without any trouble."

(Armor check penalties apply to your Swim Checks. Leather has a 0 armor check penalty. A mithral chain shirt is probably the best you can get, AC bonus +4, Dex bonus +4 with a 0 armor check penalty.)

Torryn talks about underwater fighting being different then on land and reiterates the need for a lot more information.

Gnubert heads back for a nights rest.

Ash offers no argument to Mortimer.

Drack agrees top meet with the council and wonders about drinking a potion underwater.

Mole still has concerns and fees losses if battles take place underwater.

Mortimer points out that leather armor would be fine in the water as is his fancy chain shirt.

The evening passes and the party wakes up to a crisp clear morning. Once preparations are underway you find the council gathered and they take seats as you come in. Clearly they were in some sort of discussion. {ooc: Feel free to sense motive I am refreshing myself with how to do spoilers, sorry} Looking you over one of the council members speaks.

“We are not sure how to persuade to you take up an endeavor that is clearly not something you want to be involved in. Still, before we look for other means, is there any information we can provide from the collected memories of such issues? What I or the others deem important may not be what you want to know so please, ask what you would like.”

"Persuade?" Torryn blurted. "Honestly, no amount of 'persuasion' is going to get us to needlessly throw our lives away. Do you seriously think, for one moment that just because we won't drown, we are able to tackle the fish people in their own environment? Water is not an easy medium through which to move. Whilst it is supportive - it's not like we're at risk of falling to our deaths - it does impede movement. You recognise this already in that you've offered tridents, but there's a lot more to it than that. PLUS, on top of all that, some of our best advantages are unavailable. Metal armour, material components, my bow - not available. Yet you still want to "persuade" us. Well, you can do so by providing information." Torryn was on a roll and never gave a thought to the council intentions. In fact she was angry; angry that they thought they could simply 'persuade' them to step into an alien environment with practically no knowledge or preparation. Whilst she was undeniably impulsive, she wasn't suicidally so. At least she liked to that was true. Perhaps Agratha would be proud of her now.

"Oh, and you do know that I can't swim?" She added as an afterthought.

None of what she had said though would elicit much in the way of useful information. She sighed.

"Sorry, I'm just frustrated by this whole thing. I'm so ignorant of these matters that I don't even know the right questions to ask." Torryn then looked to her fiends for help. They'd definitely know the right questions to ask.

Loryn replies to the messenger that the group will be there in the morning. One final evening to put some thoughts together and Loryn starts by sharing what he learned from Fri, the sole survivor.

"This screams Plateau City to me. Their ship, their people, their loss. Obviously Pheandra, her husband and, actually not sure who else, is pretty hot and heavy for us to go be heroes or what not. Feels a bit, 'we're the council and you do what we say' to me. I don't want to drag Grog into this. The old man is retired. Weird enough he went out on that last bit, like having your grandfather watching over your shoulder to make sure you are doing it right."

Loryn nods at Torrynashkabbeth and understands her concerns, he couldn't swim either and would just be walking along the bottom with a big rock.
"No Drack, i have no idea how to do that. We sink, we walk. That's what I got, but i also have the idea to turn this over to the WLA of Pateau City and go from there.

At the meeting, Loryn cordially greets everyone and...closes his mouth as Torrynashkebbeth has her say.
he whispers to her,

"You don't mind if I rephrase a bit do you?" he provides a warm smile and a pat to her hip. The young woman was full of fire and he really liked her and very much wanted her to know that he was not remotely upset at her for the outburst.

"TIts not a matter of persuasion, its a matter of doing less harm and more good through any action on this. The amount of resources we're gonna burn is pretty staggering as the rings by themselves do not allow for this to likely be successful. Several of us will literally be reduced to walking on the floor of the ocean, possibly holding onto a big rock as weight to stay down and not simply partially float in some oddd turnign orbit. Not sure really how the rings magic take affect in that regard. Perhaps our lungs fill and we lose all air and thus bouy...."

Loryn recognizes his tangent and stops mid word

Apologies, To my point, several of us are members of the WLA and we need to send word to Plateau City WLA on what happened. They can advise and or assign. The ship, crew, passengers, owners and all cargo are citizens of Plateau City. Very much see it as their call. We will be here if any hostile action comes our direction. They brought the boat here, for the first appearance in more than 40 years. Not a sound tactic to a group you are about to raid. I don't have any questions. We should instigate the citizens watch, as we did with the gremlins to assist in keeping watch . this time we have the advantage of knowing where any potential threat is to come from and certainly all of us will keep a eye on the beach head during the sunless hours of night. The rings would be useful incase pursuit becomes necessary. underwater happens for some of us much closer to shore."

Mortimer Margrave (Stephen F.): ac:19/14/16. temp/hp:41/34.
Monday April 10th, 2023 11:27:24 PM

In the night, when the veil between the living and shadow is at its thinnest, Mortimer's sleep becomes his birth in a setting of elsewhere. His soul rises, like in a dream, but not in complete forgetfulness of this realm.

Mortimer finds himself standing at the edge of a shore. Not unlike that of Dragon Bay, but here, the water is dead and perfectly still. This was not what he was expecting. Where is the family in the tavern with a fiery hearth. There was no flame here ... it is cold. A familiar cold. The water is smooth like glass and reflects the world like a mirror. As he looks across the water, he isn't sure where the water ends and the sky begins.

He doesn't feel completely alone, his reflection in the water keeps him company; or is it. His image isn't entirely his own. It's older, withered and more skeletal in appearance. Only a few strands of hair remain, his nose is completely absent and his shriveled lips reveal a menacing set of teeth. The figure tilts its head and looks upon the young sorcerer independently from Mortimer's own movements. It speaks ...

'i can see you now. they hid you from me ... very clever,' it hisses with a low chuckle.

The seemingly undead figure then steps out from the shore and the water freezes under its feet as it walks away. The ice spreads out from him like a sheet, revealing that Mortimer had been, in fact, underwater the entire time.

Mortimer suddenly awakes in the Living Wold, back in the safety of his bed. It was almost sunrise. He had been asleep a lot longer then the time he had spent in his dream. However he becomes aware of new information he hadn't known before.

At breakfast, he explains to his friends that if they could breathe water, they could cast their spells normally underwater.

(ooc: In the core rulebook, Chapter 13 - Environment, on page 432. Section: Spellcasting Underwater, "Casting spells while submerged can be difficult for those who cannot breathe underwater. A creature that cannot breathe water must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) to cast a spell underwater. Creatures that CAN breathe water are unaffected and can cast spells normally. Some spells might function differently underwater, subject to GM discretion.")

During the meeting, he chooses to stay quiet because Loryn had said it quite well on his own and he had nothing to add. He was a bit disturbed by the dead man he saw last night. Mortimer could still hear his words repeating in his head.

Gnubert wakes early, much earlier than he planned as he didn't sleep well. The cleric spends the bulk of the early morning praying on the request set before the party. Gnubert cleans his armor, and dons his surcoat binding the sides closed methodically. Gnubert walks to the kitchen, and rummages around until he finds some bread, and cheese.

Gnubert follows the group to the council's offices, and listens to the others. "I prayed for guidance last night, and this morning. None has been received. I have no idea how we should proceed. On one hand there is no doubt we should help the hamlet, on the other, none of us should be expected to rush headlong into a fool's errand. I believe we want to help, but we have no idea how to do so in a way that won't require the payment of our lives." The cleric takes a breath, "Mortimer has assured us spells can be cast underwater which helps part of the group, but does nothing for those who are martially inclined. I am inclined to agree with the idea of reaching out to the WLA for assistance, and the owners of the ship."

DM-Ryan: Friendly Bar Keep - Maps and Art
Tuesday April 11th, 2023 10:13:39 AM

Mortimer has a vivid and unusual dream that ends up with him being underwater. At breakfast he explains that spell casting underwater would be just fine thanks to the rings.

Ash brings up water breathing potions at breakfast but Torryn reminds him that they would have rings on loan.

Manolo catches snippets of conversation as the group joins the council but not enough to determine the mood.

Torryn says her piece, upset with the idea of persuasion and expressing her frustration. She wants more information but again fails to ask what information she would like. Eventually she admits she doesn’t know the right questions to ask.

Loryn again thinks this should fall to Plateau City. He worries that several would be reduced to walking or holding a rock to sink to the bottom. Sending word to the WLA in Plateau City and setting up a watch are high on his list.

Gnubert acknowledges that they want to help and knowing the can cast spells underwater makes things better. Still he has no idea how to accomplish this in a way that will not cost some lives.

Captain Bearclaw hold up a hand. “No one wants lives lost and it is understandable scary to go into a hostile environment like the water. When I was young my mother once told me that a fear of open water was irrational. To me it is more than rational, it is natural to be afraid of any environment that can, by itself, cause death. The rings will help but there is more that can be done.” He turns to the council nodding for them to speak.

One rises and pulls out a wand and gestures to a chest in the corner.. “We had gathered some gold, a quite large amount actually, due to the threat to the area this poses. Yes we could wait for others but the gods often ruin a plan like that.”

He holds the want out. “I am told this wand allows people to move freely in any environment. It holds sixteen charges each of which should last more than an hour. I am sure there are other items available and for that the chest contains 13,280gp to be split among you for purchases should you decide local intervention is possible.”

“You can tell by the sum that we consider this an existential threat to the community. The Windguard are watching the shore but beyond that no one knows what the situation is.”

Captain Bearclaw wraps up. “I understand that issues but someone at least needs to get a feel for what is happening. Clearly if it is not you we will find others but, personally, I would rather our resources go to you all. I am sure you have other questions.”

There was much to think on and Torryn's mind was a whirl with speculation. She aired her thoughts to her friends in case she overlooked something important, which was, in her estimation, more than likely.

"So, with the rings we won't drown. With the wand we can move freely - as if on land, more or less, for an hour. Now, if I remember aright, a potion of swimming would aid a person for a similar length of time and are actually one of the easier potions to make; so aren't that expensive." She cast a quick eye towards the coffer.

"To me, it seems we need to know how many and how close to shore these fish-people are. With what's on offer and can be obtained at the Catacombs, we should be able to scout that information - without dying. That's because we can't go much further than a mile out to sea. I'm thinking that it may be possible to ascertain the level of threat and then determine whether it's something we can handle or not. The elders ARE being generous - but then, they're not the ones getting wet. Whatever, it's not fair for me to decide, because I think that I'm the least impacted by going underwater - apart from the whole "not swimming" thing. I mean: I don't wear armour and can still cast my Fey Magic.. We Sacred Dancers are pretty versatile like that."

OOC*Based on an average swimming speed of 1 mile/hour - which I can do!
I checked and Elixir of Swimming costs just 150. They last an hour; so 2 will get us there and back AND we'll still have some money to bolster attack/defence abilities.

Drack will respond to the council, having stayed quiet so far. He thought Loryn and Torry covered the situation quite well.

"So it appears you would like us to investigate why this happened, and see if a resolution can be had before turning to a fight if that is inevitable? That sounds like a better idea than giving them a punch in the nose when they actually did nothing to this town or it's people. The rings, the wand, and enough money to supply ourselves for such an endeavor removes most of my hesitancy. If Loryn makes the call to do it, I'm in."

Loryn stifles a chuckle and shakes his head. An existential threat to the community? The clans of the Red Hills hills pose more of an immediate threat then creatures of the deep. Irrational fear indeed. Loryn glances at the dwarf and then his fellow gnome. The others had all but agreed and, Loryn. Drack speaking to him snaps his mind from its wanderings.

Loryn addresses Pheandra and the others directly now, "A message needs to be sent to Plateau City. Our investigation could very well put other merchant ships in danger and cost Plateau City citizens their lives and livelihood and they need to know.. Please draft and sign the communique and get that sent. We should be prepared to investigate the issue in 2 days." Loryn ends with a nod and steps back assuming the next step be for the council to say thank you and indicate the party to leave.

Loryn exits the chamber and keeps his mouth very purposefully shut. None of his concerns have or may even be addressed, but the humans were scared and when scared, they make quick decisions. Consequences would follow and they would react again. The gnome was beginning to suspect why Windhorn Hamlet seemed to cycle 'bad times', short term perspective.

Back at Minerva's and in his happy place, the kitchen, Loryn puts together lunch and relaxes.

I can also cast Waterbreathing 2 times daily, although that is all of my highest level spells for the day." The cleric sips his tea, and continues, " The next problem I see is more operational, rather than logistical. Once we enter the water are we dropping to the seabed, and moving forward? Or do we move forward in between the surface, and seabed leaving us open from below, above, forwards, and backwards. Additionally, without ranged support everything will be within melee range, that does not benefit us at all."

We can split what’s left to help with our individual needs.”

“I’m not thinking we wanna go all the way to the bottom if we don’t have to Gnubert, but that depends on the depth. I’d prefer to go a little ways down and bring them to us. If we have powerful light sources a ways below the surface, that should hopefully get their attention.”

Speaking of communication, Mortimer then asks Loryn and Gnubert, "I know you two can talk ta small animals ... ever tried talkin' ta fish? They could be informative, yeah."

When the conversation turns toward being able to see, Mortimer adds, "I can grant a number of ya the ability ta see in the dark (Darkvision - Duration: 5 hours), but that would exhaust all my more powerful spells. We could get a wand for that spell. Best to not let everyone know we're comin', yeah." One second thought, he asks, "How deep is the bay anyways? She was certainly impulsive enough, but now it seemed her father's Elven heritage was showing as she was inclined to agree with the mood and sentiment that things felt rushed.

"I never thought about the light, but then I can see pretty well, even in the gloom; so unless it's pitch black, I should be okay. As to getting there - well, I honestly thought we'd just....walk. I mean, I don't swim; so as we can breathe the water, I figured we'd explore the area close to Bearclaw Keep - just like we would if it was land. I'm probably being dumb though. I've never tried walking underwater, so...." She trailed off, not really knowing how to finish off her chain of thoughts. Then something else occurred.

"Dracky, I get the distinct impression that these guys are like evil, as in inherently evil, as in like, permanently bad; so bad that you really aren't going to want to exchange pleasantries or trust a single word they say. "Well, I have my spear at least. That'll work well enough." She'd left her bow and Spot with Agratha. If it came to hand-to-hand fighting, which seemed likely, she was at least, at less of a disadvantage than the others. She could fight well enough unarmed.

OOC: Torryn would have much preferred to enter from the rock in the bay than take a boat, but will go with the consensus.

PLEASE READ! There appears to be some confusion about what we have.

Ash is currently in the Catacombs trying to buy only 14 Elixirs of Swimming. We need 16 if each member is to have two Elixirs. Also, he is trying to buy 7 Scrolls of Freedom of Movement that we don't even need! We have a Wand for that.

We need to put a HOLD on any shopping until we confirm what we have and what is needed for the group.

At the shore of Dragon Bay, Mortimer removes his boots and his cloak. He wears nothing but his chain shirt, belt, trousers and sickle and dagger. He is wearing his rings, of course, and he heads out into the water. If the water is cold, it doesn't bother him in the least.

He makes his way into the 5-ft deep area and takes a quick glance at the ring to see if it has changed in any way. He then ducks down below the waves. Mortimer never had much trouble holding his breath before. He could do so for long periods of time. Almost as if he didn't need to breathe like other people. However he waits for the strange sensation for water breathing to begin.

Gnubert follows Mortimer to Dragon Bay, and slides the Ring of Water Breathing on. The cleric tucks his cloak, and boots into his haversack but leaves the remaing gear on. The gnome wades into the water, and dips below the water. Gnubert holds his breath for as long as he can but then attempts to take a small breath to see what happens.

Loryn, Mortimer and [n] Ash [/b] discuss a shopping trip and clarify what resources the group has been provided. Included are the Wand of Freedom of Movement (16), Eight Rings of Water Breathing and 13,280gp.

Torryn points out she has a spear as a potential weapon.

Drak feels the wand is most of what he needs and wants potions to help with swimming.

Mortimer and Gunbert decide to test the rings and after preparations wade out into the water.

The two in the water find it is cool but not enough so to cause problem. After some hesitation and breath holding they find they can breath as well in the water as on the land though there is an odd transition moment they are sure it will not impact any of their performance either above or below the water line. Looking around they can also see that there are many rocks strewn about and in the distance, barely some very brightly colored plants clinging to large rocks. The two also find that they can communicate although sound does not seem to travel as far, at least not without distorting.

Loryn looks at Mortimer with his mouth slightly open, your basic dumbfounded expression and slowly, purposefully, closes his mouth. "Um yeah, that's right, the wand and I forgot to count myself in our total, so 8 not 7, and as we don't need to purchase the scrolls, I would suggest an extra Swimming Potion each, but that can be a personal decision"

At the long boat, Loryn eyes the water suspiciously. Mortimer starts taking off clothes and Loryn just sort of stares. Getting undressed had not really occurred to him. Most of his clothing was magically enhanced. He shrugs and dons the Water Breathing Ring.

Loryn wades out with Gnubert, but remains above water while the cleric goes under. If something went horribly wrong, he would be able to pull Gnubert to the surface. What an embarrassing way to go, thinking a magical device did something that it did not.

It had been several minutes at least since the air bubbles came from the cleric and he was still moving about and so Loryn decides it is his turn and exhales before sitting down to put his head underwater. At only 5 feet from shore, it was not exactly deeps sea adventuring yet. Gnome steps, we are taking gnome steps.

If they could do it, surely she could too. Torryn quickly stripped right down to the briefest of underwear. Being a dancer, she felt no shame at all. She was used to "prancing about with barely a stitch on", as her father put it. Whilst the water was cool, she knew that once she got moving she'd not notice it. The more disturbing issue was actually breathing. It took a lot of willpower to actually even try, but try she did and soon enough she was floundering around - try to move as she would on land, but with a broad grin on her face. Her silvery blonde mane was now a wild halo around her. Although it was water darkened, it still retained its strange silvery sheen.

Torryn attempted to swim. There was no fear as she couldn't drown. It was actually much easier than she expected.

Loryn waits to see some others surviving underwater and takes the plunge himself though being sure he is someplace he can just stand up to breath in an emergency. It is an unusual feeling but not deadly.

Torryn strips down and, with some hesitation, starts to flounder about in the water. Getting herself under control she finds the whole thing easier then expected.

Manolo hopes he wont drown before crossing the large rock and plunging in. He adapts quickly breathing underwater just fine.

Mole listens dryly and quietly while Ash is off doing the shopping.

Gnubert casts light and swims about a bit. Satisfied with that he tries his mace which is less of a good feeling.

Gnubert watches the experiments in the water and tries channeling energy, which works fine, before he exits.

Loryn continues his spell tests and has some interesting results. Casting grease on the ground the spell works as intended but it could be easily avoided by swimming.

Glitterdust and Color Spray work as intended though both tend to linger in the water a bit as they disperse. It is doubtful this has any mechanical effect on the spell..

Burning hands first fizzles{GM rolled a caster level check for you, below} but it works normally when converted to acid.

Many of the larger rocks in the water have a decent amount of life around them that they have been focusing on. A few places are described about a half mile out from land. One older human speaks up. “I saw one of them devils out a bit further but it was alone I think, didn’t come for the boat.” He describes where and even draws a little, crude, map that is not completely useful.

Moles long flight finds two spots that he might have seen activity but it is hard given reflections and refraction of light. At least it gives two possible areas. One of the areas is in the vicinity of where the boat was attacked.

Torryn didn't mind getting splashed by Manolo. Her response was not to splash back, but to stay underwater. Still, there eventually came a time when she must return to land. After the exertions and playfulness of being underwater it was both reassuring and disappointing to be back on land. She'd been surprised at how much she'd enjoyed being under the waves. There, she'd found a whole new realm of beauty to explore. It was very distracting - at least it was for her.

Like the others she quickly dried through the expeditious use of magic. (Mending) If Drack wanted to be swiftly dried too, she could assist.

Back at their lodgings she didn't think that there was much preparing she could do. She just had to hope that no one else had purchased her "tree bracers". With a knife and a spear she'd be ready in the morning. Of course, she'd be up early to check on Spot. Only after that would she be truly ready.

Drack gets grumpily out of the water after a short bit of practice, and turns to the spell casters. “Would one of you dry me off please? Leather armor chafes when it’s wet. This whole scenario is not in my happy zone. Why can’t we charge horses through an orchard of blossoming cherry trees with a bard playing a cool song in the background to make it more impressive? No we gotta go swim with da fishes. I need to kill some evil.”

Loryn thanks the fisherman that he talks to, though where they fish now doesn't matter, where they used to go for over 30 years without being attacked does. But that was close enough.

Loryn relays what he learned and thinks 3/4-1 mile out is where to start. A good breakfast, Swimming potions in in his pocket and an extra 50' of rope and the gnome is all set. he sets out for the beach the following day to get the boat in the water.

Having enjoyed the water Torryn regrettable gets out of the water and dries herself and any others off. Mortimer helps out with the drying and discusses the care of leather.

Drack is less thrilled about the water and is ready to kill some evil!!

Loryn thanks the fisherman that he speaks with even if it is not the information he wanted to get. He lets the others know what he thinks.

Manolo tries to squeeze the water from his clothing but it is only about half successful and will take some time. The process is expedited by Torryn.

Gnubert lets the others know that he is ready to start in the morning.

The group heads back into town, runs their errands has a good meal and beds down for the night. It rains lightly as at some point so the ground is wet in the morning but the sky is clear. You know the boat from the attack is available for your use and you have a good idea where to start thanks to Mole flitting about over the water for a couple of hours.

Torryn arose early. She liked to see the dew on the grass and droplets hanging in spiderwebs. So it was that she fairly danced her way to see Spot. Having cleaned him through her magic and bade her farewells, she undertook her training regimen; which consisted of a lot of impressive looking stretches. The kicking and punching routines, she was not as confident with, so felt doing them early ensured less prying eyes. Regardless of how indifferent she was at her katas, she worked diligently enough to ensure a good appetite - at least for her. Mole and Drack would likely think a mouse ate more, but Torryn was far from large and really didn't need quite as much sustenance as they others. That being noted, she did make a good impression on Loryn's fried eggy-bread. he truly was a marvel in the kitchen.

With her new bracers on and spear in hand she declared herself ready. That she was stood, barefoot in only small briefs and a halter top, didn't trouble her in the slightest. Exposed flesh never troubled the Fey and Torryn was quite certain that Fey, she indeed was.

"I'm ready, Guys and it sure looks a good day for a swim. Also, there's not much wind, so the water shouldn't be that choppy: not that it'll matter much once we drop below the waves. This is SO exciting! I can't wait to do that 'swimming' thing again." Torryn grinned broadly and bounced up and down a little unable to restrain her enthusiasm.

Loryn beams a bit as the crew tears into the breakfast. It was truly his love language and if the stir of adventuring was not so strong, he would fully committed to making everyone around him overweight.

Sipping on some juice, Loryn chuckles at Dracks lament, "That's oddly specific, but it does paint a fantastic picture."

Finishing up and cleaning up, Loryn is set, "Well some of us are dressed and all of us seem ready to go. Let's do this"

Loryn heads to boat softly singing, "This Octopus, black ink it shoots, Send him to north woldia..."

After a hardy breakfast and a quick trip to the Catacombs, Mortimer shows up to the boat with a bit of a swagger. He isn't wearing his boots and the bottoms of his trouser legs are cinched tightly with a bit of cord against his legs. An obvious attempt to keep them from flapping about underwater. This accentuates his very thin legs in a rather unflattering way. However he playfully exaggerates poses as if his appearance was alluring. "Feelin' a bit froggy, I am!"

The crew each goes about their daily routine to get ready to hunt some Sahuagin! At some point someone lets the council know that they are heading out which brings Three young men meet you near the gnomish boat along with Fifebriess, the injured gnome. Fifebriess greats each of you as you arrive with a smile and a handshake.

“As a representative of the ownership of this, er, ship? Ownership ship, not going to phrase it like that in the future, sorry moving on. I thought it only right to help you out a little. These chaps here, Lorry, Dale and Dale can help you with the actual boating part of your trip, there young lads and understand the risks.”

The middle one gives a nod, he is a redhead with pale skin and a gap in his front teeth. “I’m Lorry and this is my brother Dale and my other brother Dale.” He gestures first to his right and then his left.

The gnome speaks up again. “I also brought you a couple of waterproof bags, there not extravagant but useful.” He hands over two waterproof bags valued at 5gp each.

Captain Bearclaw arrives as this goes on. “So your off then. We appreciate your work for he town. Any list minute things to discuss?”

The three young men are already in the boat and making preparation to head out when your ready.

Mortimer bites his lip. What was Drack meaning ... give it back?! To each his own, has always been his philosophy, but he hopes he's not being lumped into this charity. If they don't make it back from this endeavor, sure, let 'em have it all.

He's always valued Loryn opinion as well. It's usually thoughtful, well-said and at times a bit dodgy. He could appreciate that. However he doesn't understand his objection to the young sailors coming along. They obviously know what they're getting into; their eyes are wide open. Mortimer finds this bit of logic completely confusing. It wasn't like any of us were accomplished sailors. Judging by their performance in the water yesterday, if left to their own devices, they'd probably end up paddling in circles for the remainder of the day. He wonders how many of us will be cold-cocked by the boom of the sail.

'how do I know what a boom is,' he wonders?

"Oye, the sun is gettin' bright," he mutters as he begins to feel the burn on his skin. He pulls the hood up over his head.

Bearclaw looks more then a little confused. "I am sure the offer would be appreciated but nothing is resolved yet is it? You have the resources is you need more then one trip and what you don't use would be a sign of your value to us."

Lorry, Dale and Dale kind of shuffle around for a bit. One of the Dales starts to walk off but see the others standing there and goes back with an apologetic smile. Lorry speaks up. "We fish mostly so making sure the water is safe is kind of a big deal. Dale and Dale are pretty good with a spear too, they use them for fishing near the shore around the rocks you see. We would probably be fine. Were all strong swimmers too."

Lorry looks more confident then his brothers but none of them probably have much actual perspective on how a fight really goes.

The gnome joins in. "It's your call, just don't want you getting lost out there or floundering if there is a problem. If you think you can handle the boat then it's your call."

The lads, if nothing else, make sure the boat is set and toss in a couple of coiled ropes. One of the Dales mumbles "Always good to have a spare rope in case you catch something you need to tow back."

Whilst it was good to try to protect people wherever possible, Torryn didn't think it was possible to protect all the people all the time. The young men (likely still older than her), knew the risks. They were braving danger, just as she and the others were. Their contribution was as significant in its own way as their own. Torryn was very much in favour of all three coming and sailing the boat; something about which she knew nothing. Plus, the fish people would definitely see the interlopers into their domain as the main threat: one that couldn't be ignored in favour of the boat, because that would open them to a flanking assault. Consequently, she felt they'd be a lot safer than those in the water - the creatures' natural domain.

"Kipper, Bowsong and Swabby should definitely come." She announced, getting all the nautical appellations wrong.

Given Drack and Gnubert's fiscal generosity; she considered her own funds. She had yet to donate from what she'd received, but as Mr Bearclaw had stated, the matter wasn't resolved. She resolved to tithe upon her return., because she most definitely planned to return.

Well, she resolved to try, but was fairly certain she'd need a break; probably several and there was no way she was expending all her energy trying to move a huge boat.

The rocks and the water all looked very inviting to Torryn. She knew it would be dangerous, but was very much looking forward to going underwater once more.

Drak suggests that those not rowing keep there eyes out for rocks. Most the rocks are below water level at this point, far enough to not be an issue you find.

Lorryn has some suggests on how to make this easier next time.

Ash keeps an eye and jokes about becoming pirates instead of adventurers.

Manolo takes a shift at rowing to help focus and calm for battle.

Mortimer admits to not knowing shanties but comes up with a nice pirate name.

Gnubert paddles and has the sharpest eyes of the group. He spots the rock formations below the water that can be used to make the location.

While none of you are particularly good at navigating with the craft you make it close to the spot you are looking for. No rocks are above the water at this point though their bases are hard to make out, refraction from light just makes it hard to see details as small waves roll though the water. There is a rope and anchor in the boat but nothing else you didn’t bring with you.

Torryn was very grateful to be relieved from the odious task of rowing and thanked all those that took a turn at the oars. She attempted to make herself useful as a 'spotter'; seeking out any potential threats under the waves.

(Perception: 21)

"So, when do we dive in?" She asked eagerly. "Oh, and shouldn't we drop this anchor-thing? I guess we could then use the rope to pull ourselves down to the bottom. That'll be fun." Expecting Torryn not to be distracted in the new environment was clearly asking a lot - likely too much.

OOC before we go further, who has the wand. Gnubert can and, I think, Mole can use it without issue. Loryn can if he makes the UMD roll. I think Gnubert should have it.

Loryn nods as they arrive at the area Mole believes to be where he saw some of the creatures. "Ok Gnubert, if you could ping us all with a charge from the wand, Drack can tie off and heave the anchor and then we can get to it."

Once Gnubert places the Freedom of Movement spell on him, Loryn drinks one of the potions of Swimming and steps overboard.

Ash looks over the side of the boat into the water. Even though he knew he was going to be covered by magic, it still made him feel weird about jumping in and swimming down. He pulls Oslo out and lays him by his bag. "You, unfortunately, cannot go with me as I doubt my ring covers you as well. "

Drack is happy to let Manolo and Loryn take a turn on the oars. He doesn’t want to tire his muscles out before battle.

Once the group reaches the desired spot, Drack will do as Loryn says and tie off and drop the anchor. Once he has the freedom of movement in place, and drinks one of the potions of swimming he declares himself as ready as he’s gonna be. Once Loryn gives the word. He pulls his Elven blade, so it doesn’t slip out of the scabbard on the way into the water, and jumps over the side.

Before Mortimer takes his plunge, he decides to empower himself with the formidability of unlife. He immediately takes on a slightly more menacing aspect of himself.

(Mortimer casts False Life on himself. 1d10+5 = 10 temporary hit points. Duration: 5 hours.)

Like the others, he drinks down his swimming elixir and waits patiently for the spark from Gnubert's wand. He gives the gnome a wicked smile and says, "See ya in the drink," as he steps over the edge of the boat.

As Mortimer's eyes adjust to being underwater, he moves 15ft from the boat (Swim: 24) and takes a look around (Perception: 5). Apparently there are too many bubbles.

DM-Ryan: Bath Time - Maps and Art

Friday April 28th, 2023 10:52:49 AM

Mole keeps his eyes peeled for dangers. He doesn’t spot anything above the water but he tell that there is movement of some kind in the water below.

Torryn can spot that there is some movement below water though what it is hard to tell. She questions if they should drop anchor.

Ash leaves Oslo in the boat and papers to head into the water.

Manolo also notice movement below the water, down near the bottom. It could be large fish or there target. Sticking his head in he can clearly see that there are areas that were cleary disturbed recentl.

Gunbert starts tapping people with the wand once gear is stowed and follows Loryn into the water.

Loryn requests a dose of freedom of movement, drinks a potions and drops into the water.

Mortimer casts a spell and drinks his potion while he waits for Freedom of Movement. Once done he jumps in and moves 15 feet from the boat.

Below water you can see much better. Several large rocks are in the area with colorful plant life growing on them in places. There are areas where the floor has been disturbed, probably recently, the largest being about fifty feet to the east.

Mortimer swims forward to a large rock. On the rock area few crude drawings of tridents, almost like doodles. Mortimer has the best view of the disturbed area but he cannot make out more than its general shape.

{ooc: The water depth is 25 feet. The rocks rize ten feet on average making them 15 feet below the surface.}

As soon as Torryn was fully prepared: Freedom of Movement and Swimming potion, she was quick to slither overboard. Her intent was to make for the bottom.

(Swim: 11 + whatever the potion yields)

It was easier to follow the anchor down. the colours and unusual plant life immediately drew her attention. Being underwater was every bit as varied and captivating as being above it. In trying to take everything in, she looked all around.

(Perception: 25)

Torryn had her spear in one hand and a handful of anchor rope in the other, albeit she was far from glued to the latter. The potion had greatly increased her confidence under water.

Mortimer notices the simple, trident-shaped symbols scratched on the rock face. He motions for Drack and Ash to take a look. "This be the place," he says, slightly muffled by the water separating them.

It was an obvious conclusion that trident etchings, on an underwater rock, in the middle of Dragon Bay, is a good indicator that the chum-munchers left these here, but why?

Mortimer draws upon his life experiences as a street vagrant. Beggars, vagabonds and even gang members, would mark buildings and walls with symbols denoting territory, describing attitudes of inhabitants and dangers to avoid, etc. He wonders if these markings are similar in nature. Or are these symbols possibly indicating directions to a camp or hideout. Very possible, he thinks. If there is anything that can read from these markings, Mortimer will attempt to translate (Linguistics: 9).

If nothing comes to him, he notices the disturbed area and states, "We should check that out. Been meddled with, the seafloor has!" He points in that direction.

He swims 15ft over, behind some purple plant life (Swim: 20. Stealth: 11). From his hidden vantage point, he tries to get a better look (Perception: 22, natural 20).
