Break on Through to the Other Side (DM BatMark) Tuesday April 18th, 2023 8:47:26 PM Zazu looks more closely and confirms that this is indeed a dome of undead, flying and crawling. Zazu and Boyo are able to swoop through the opening widened by Beech’s party favors and the divine channelers, and reach the far side of the horde. Nightingale is able to advance and clear the second half of the route wide open with her channel. Beech rushes through the gap to the area beyond the horde, wisely saving spells for what comes next. Naithi reveals claws and fangs, and dances macabre fey animal-style through the corridor on Camalyas’ back, destroying foes on the way. Sahabiel runs through the gap opened by her powers and those of her friends, making it through to the other side. Lothlo also advances, skewering another half dozen of the undead with his arrows. Panzer guards the exit end of the path through the horde, in fact widening it to a nearly unbelievable extent with his flashing blades.
You have won through the undead horde, at some cost of your precious resources and a small amount of badgerfolk blood. Behind you, the nasty little undead creatures continue their slow, fitful progress away from the grove, in an ever-expanding hemisphere. They seem to pay you no attention now that you have cleared their ranks.
Up ahead, perhaps a 10 minute hustle away, you can see the border of the grove, or at least where it should be. It is engulfed in a swirling, dark mist of fog. You can see some dimly glowing areas on the surface of the fog, but are as yet too far away to make out any detail. Eerie moans, creaking, and other sounds emerge from the fog, but there is no obvious source for these sounds that can be seen. You feel an almost palpable dread just looking at this dreadful place where normally you would find your beautiful grove.
How will our heroes deal with this dark turn of events?
(OOC: Congrats on winning through! The DM reaches into his goodie bag and hands out some hero points (please track them on your PC sheets, subject to the usual max hero point limit = your character level):

You Know That Holy Grail Scene Where they Charge the Castle Gate for 5 Minutes? (DM BatMark) Wednesday April 19th, 2023 10:00:12 PM Nightingale channels some healing, bringing a moment of fresh cut grass smell to this otherwise dismal scene. Zazu laments the lack of a wind spell to blow away the fog, and wonders about ways to enter. The dome above is now a few hundred feet up, as the flying undead seem to be even slower to rise than the terrestrial ones were to amble outward. The dome is the same size inside as outside, and continues to slowly expand away from the grove. Lothlo wonders what is behind the dark mist and whether anyone can detect magic in it. Panzer appreciates Nightingale’s healing energy. He opines that whatever is behind the undead ring must be in the dark fog. He boldly plans to stride in, attempting to be alert for danger. Highlight to display spoiler: {I wasn’t sure whether Panzer would still stride right in after seeing more detail up close. Let me know and I can update the DM post or just take care of it next post, whichever you prefer. Not trying to push you in either direction.} Naithi rides forward on Camalayas. Beech draws his bow and follows the others forward. Sahabiel presumably keeps up.
As you approach closer to the distant grove, the eerie noises continue and you can discern the sources of the glow that you saw earlier. The first is a set of glowing Sylvan runes. Those who can read Sylvan Highlight to display spoiler: {The runes read ”Only the clever will succeed”}.
In addition, you see that the only breaks in this dark mist come in the form of three eerily glowing paths, one black, one green, and one purple, that lead twistingly into separate gaps in the mist. How do you investigate this mysterious, obviously supernatural scene?

I'm surprised to see that it's written in Sylvan, not the first place my mind goes when it comes to the undead.

Only the Clever Will Succeed (DM BatMark) Thursday April 20th, 2023 10:03:20 PM Sahabiel keeps her hand on her weapon, recalls the Bogey, and examines the Sylvan runes more closely, noting that they are a silvery color that does not match any of the paths. Nightingale agrees that the dark mists look familiar. Panzer wonders what the runes say and wants to hurry before the village gets overwhelmed eventually. He lines up in front of the purple path, the unobviously obvious choice for him. Beech also lines up near the purple pathway, for different reasons. Naithi takes a look at the mists and glow now that she is closer. As she studies this phenomenon carefully, she is able to determine that it is more supernatural than natural. There is a certain fey aspect to it as well, albeit twisted somehow. She recalls that there are many fey that find certain numbers important, and the number three–the same as the number of glowing paths–would fit that characteristic. Studying the ground near the grove, she finds three sets of graceful humanoid bootprints, one leading to each of the glowing paths, as well as three more sets of three pairs of humanoid footprints that seem less graceful, and which also lead into the mist. These are of course in addition to the myriad small prints of animals, presumably those of any undead that originated here before spreading out in the horde. Lothlo translates the Sylvan runes as “Only the clever will succeed” and notes how odd it is that anything to do with the undead used that language. He sees and knows of nothing whose color would match the paths significantly, but in examining the weave of magic here, does feel some sense of the arcane connected to the three glowing paths. His mundane examination of the paths does not reveal more about their lore, but perhaps there are other ways? Zazu lurks.
The Champions stand before this clearly magical phenomenon. Do you rush in? Investigate by other means? Something else altogether surprising to gods and mortals alike?

Green is common in nature, extremely common, only black is more common, because half of a day is spent in the dark. That leaves Purple as the oddball, and since my magical bloodline is also strange, it just called to me..." This all stated by Beech, but he has no suggestions as to what others should do.... While standing and waiting, he'll detect magic and see if there is anything manipulable about the Runes, like in the deeper Culverwood....

To Lothlo's comment Panzer says" This was always going to be about the Fey, so Sylvan is in no way odd. I picked purple because it didn't fit in with what we are here for. To me green stood for the Culverwood as it is, green vibrant and not dark. Black stood for what this cult wants to make it, dark dangerous , well more dangerous, and scary. Purple, well, to me it just screamed 'hey were Fey and here to mess with you' That's not the phrase my mind conjured but there are ladies present," " Now that I have said that and 100% expect some kind of fey on the other side, I should switch one of these for cold iron." Panzer sheathes the off hand Kukri and draws a similar one, made of cold iron. He squares his shoulders and starts to step forward, his mind clearly made up.

Sahabiel thinks the words of the runes over. Only the clever will succeed.. the clever.. not the wise, not the brightest, but the clever. Somehow, the way that is worded implies to her that a trick of some kind is afoot.
Like two of her companions, Sahabiel too will cast Detect Magic, but not on the runes but instead, standing back a little, first on the various tracks that Naithi spotted, and then at the mist itself and the paths into the mist. She does not need the orison to know that there is magic here, but if she can see the colors of the different auras, perhaps there is some hidden clue.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 20/15/16, HP: 56/56, CMD: 23 d20+15=35 ; Friday April 21st, 2023 9:09:49 PM Let's not be too hasty. Anything that can raise the undead like this could also quickly cause us to join their ranks if we aren't careful.
If three is an important number, then it might be that we need to take all three paths. It could also be that we have like the other sets of three that we need to have three people leave into the mist each, and any remaining people go down the paths. I don't think they would tell us to be clever and then have us guessing at possible interpretations, if they took the time to write the message I'm sure there is a way to determine the safe path if we spend a minute to examine the area and think about this.
Lothlo examines the footprints to see if any seem more sure footed and certain of their path than the others. He also pays attention to where each set of footprints starts from to see if those who took a glowing path were doing something before they started down those paths.

Hey, We're Fey and Here to Mess with You (DM BatMark) Saturday April 22nd, 2023 6:42:39 AM Zazu detects magic on the runes and tries to use ranged legerdemain to pick up whatever they are on. The runes are magical, and concentrating for a little while longer reveals that they are figments of illusion. The ranged legerdemain is unable to move or manipulate the fog, which feels oddly substantial and resists the trickster’s pressure. Boyo’s sniffing at the paths does not reveal anything new. Naithi astutely notes the pattern of threes, and wonders whether you must also split up to take all three paths to make this work. Beech remarks that three is a prime number, and chose purple because it did not seem to fit what he expected, and because strange calls to strange. He also detects magic and examines the runes, finding the same as Zazu. Panzer responds to Lothlo, remarking his certitude that it would involve the fey. Like Beech, he chose purple because it didn’t seem to fit in here, and was like a nastygram from the fey. He swaps one kukri for cold iron, given its usefulness against the fey. Sahabiel things over the runes’ meaning, inferring that some kind of trick is afoot. She too casts detect magic and moves her focus across several targets. She finds nothing magical about the footprints. The mists and paths are another story entirely. The mist is underlain by an intricate weave of enchantment, necromancy, and transmutation. These same types of magic characterize the three paths as well, with enchantment glowing green, necromancy shades of black and grey, and transmutation displaying as purple. Lothlo cautions against being too hasty and offers alternate thoughts regarding the rule of threes. He examines the footprints again, but is unable to discern any additional clues from them, nor any signs that they did anything special before entering the paths. Nightingale keeps an eye out for fey tricksters, but only sees Zazu at the moment.
The Champions have a dilemma, namely which interpretation of the rule of three to follow. Split up and follow three paths at once? Or most of you enter the mists like the shuffly groups of three, and only the rest of you enter the paths? Your investigations have revealed that the paths are infused with magic threads of specific individual types, while the mists are a dense weave of all three. What will our heroes do?

On a whim, the wizard ponders the metaphor of these threads as webs, and wonders if transmutation magic ... specifically spider climb ... might help to move through them. If this seems like a possibly fruitful course of action, Zazu casts the spell, sharing it with Boyo, and tries climbing through the "webs."

None Shall Pass, At Least Not Like This (DM BatMark) Wednesday April 26th, 2023 8:26:31 PM Beech stows his bow, and tries to both physically and magically grasp the threads of magic to propel himself on a direct path to the grove. His aberrant bloodline does sing to him here, but he can feel progress being thwarted, as if something is still missing that would allow this to work. Nightingale tries to walk back to Sahabiel, and thinks catastrophic thoughts that as yet remain unspoken. She can see and hear Sahabiel, albeit in a distorted fashion. Sahabiel calls out to her friends on the purple path, and waves when Nightingale starts coming back. She is starting to think that, as Naithi earlier proposed, it might be necessary for all three paths to be trod at once by members of the party. Zazu feels like a figment out of water, but tries to further study the threads on the purple path. Like Beech, Zazu gets the sense that it should be possible to use the threads to advance along the path, and the trickster’s spellcraft even suggests how this might be done, again confirming Beech’s earlier ideas. Zazu’s further investigation does reveal very dim threads of black and green that connect to the purple path, but do not actually get woven in. The detect magic shows small pulses of transmutation magic moving outward along the black and green threads when attempts are made to navigate the purple path toward the grove. Spider climb does seem like it would be helpful, if the unseen impediment to progress can be lifted. Panzer basks in the transmutation and waits on a way ahead to allow him to move freely. Lothlo nocks an arrow and waits. Naithi has no new good ideas to add to her previous one.
Nightingale is able to exit the purple path after a few moments, with just a little extra effort required to pass the boundary back into the normal Wold. She bears no ill effects from the short jaunt into the purple path.
Those still on the purple path are unable to move forward. What do you do with the new information that Zazu has revealed, and Sahabiel’s thoughts?

Naithi and Camalayas remain on the transmutation path for the time being. Does anyone have any special resistance to enchantment? That looks like it might be the path we have the most disadvantage with. Maab had given me the ability to easily transform into something new, which will be the greatest advantage on the transmutation path, but Camalayas and I share a special bond, and against mind affecting, level/ability draining or instant death spells and effects if either of us resist the attack then we both resist the attack. It's not much, as my resistance is pretty average (+8), but it's an option if no one can do better

Panzer is pretty sure he is where he belongs. He is not mentally strong and a simple charm spell could end the entire run if used on him so enchantment isn't desirable. He can fight necromancy too but has not advantage against it nor weakness toward it. If they want his to swap to necromancy then he can. All that crosses his mind is the horse of undead animals making their way to home.
The Path Not Taken (DM BatMark) Thursday April 27th, 2023 9:02:19 PM Zazu thinks that you need to try the other paths too, and keeps trying on this purple path with his spider climb. Sahabiel nods in agreement, given the connections between the paths, and suggests splitting up evenly across the paths. She will walk the necromantic path, suggests Naithi remain on the purple transmutation path, and that someone resistant to enchantment take that path. Naithi remains on the transmutation path, but could do the enchantment path if needed. Lothlo reviews his supplies and abilities, and finds no particular strength or weakness that applies here. Beech gives up on the transformative path, and waits to be told which to enter. Panzer is pretty sure he is on the right path, and too vulnerable to enchantment. Nightingale whispers a question to Sahabiel.
The purple path remains crowded, with Zazu, Naithi, and Panzer (with their various sidekicks) there for now. Sahabiel is prepared to step onto the black necromantic path. Beech, Lothlo, and Nightingale have not yet chosen. If you are going to follow the plan most recently proposed by Zazu (and concurred by Sahabiel), then someone(s) will need to get on the enchantment path; Naithi has offered to do that as a 2nd choice. Sahabiel will be working alone unless someone also chooses to get on the black path with her. Progress on the purple path remains stymied for now. Perhaps this new plan, once enacted, will allow forward progress?

She takes a moment to imitate Zazu. The stands can be very hard to detect for non-fey, and mortals that aren't trained might not be able to see or sense them at all. Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 25/14/24 -- HP: 60/60 d20+15=17 ; Saturday April 29th, 2023 11:34:34 AM Note - In all spoken lines here, Sahabiel is speaking in Sylvan so she does not have her quirky drawl with which she speaks Common.
As they stepped onto the black path together, Sahabiel looks to her side to Nightingale, her companion and friend that she had bonded with over their shared spirituality and elven blood. She smiles at Nightingale, and reaches out her hand. In Sylvan, a language she normally reserves for her spellcasting and prayers, she says, “I could wish for none better at my side, cousin. We walk together!” And quite a pair they made next to each other, didn’t they… both priestesses in their completely different but complementary ways - the agile drow, willowy and dark, follower of mighty Queen Maab, exotic and so light. And Sahabiel, heavier of build, in her armor, an often very down to earth protector of the Culverwood.
“Let us show whoever is behind all this, that today, out of all the servants of all the Powers.. they chose to bring their nasty tricks to the wrong ones.”
Sahabiel puts her foot forward, and prays to the Culverwood for guidance. (As in, she actually uses the orison - +1 to skill checks) She served not a celestial being that had never itself known death… her patron was known to scholars as an Immortal Power, but she thought that title did not entirely fit… for it was not the will of the wood or the way of the wood to seek the immortality of its constituent parts. It’s own existence was riding on the very epitome of the cycle of nature. In every moment, the Culverwood knew life, knew death, knew rebirth, knew growth, and knew the natural decline as things aged past their prime. As things should be.
She speaks as she walks;
“Necromancy is stagnancy, whereas life, death, and rebirth are a wheel that can turn forever.”
She could tell the shape of necromancy, because she had all the other pieces. Necromancy was the holes inbetween, and she could see them.
“Necromancy can not create or rejuvenate. It can only try to take out of the cycle.”
Both herself and Nightingale carried within them the blessed gift of being able to channel divine, positive, radiant energy. The working of necromancy relied on its twisted mirror counterpart.. it too relied on a flow of energy, but one that always had to take away from somewhere, like how both a river and parched earth moved water, but one carried it along and the other sucked it down into the ground to not let go again. If it came to it, the very energies of necromancy might crave the warmth of that which life has, but the priestesses were connected to a source where it ran too pure for even such tastes. Not mere warmth that could be fed on, but bright flame straight from a roaring furnace, too hot to touch.
Sahabiel is not done yet with her faith-inspired oratory violence.. as she seeks out, tugs at, and where she finds weakness in the magicks, cuts through to forge ahead, she declares at the mist; “Preservation has its place, but that which only has the power to hold on to what was, can not endure against the determined turning of the wheel that births all that will yet be. That which remains stagnant, will be ground down by that which can renew, that which can find new starts. The power behind me, is greater than the power behind you.”
Walking forward with Nightingale, together reading the weave of the magics and finding the path forward, she raises her hand as in a gesture of abjuration against those threads of magic that try to mislead or hold them back…
“You are no obstacle to us.”
Dice roll: d20 + 9 (skill) + 1 (luck bonus from Prayer) + 1 (competence bonus from Guidance) + 2 (Aid Another is assumed since Nightingale can't fail that check) + 2 (Sahabiel has 'affinity' in the very yin/yang way that by standing as priestess-knight for a power that is everything that necromancy isn't, it is like looking at the negative of a picture for her -- all the colors are in reverse, but what is in the picture remains recognizable.), total bonus +15.
d20 + 15 = 17, vs DC 15, success. Almost the smallest possible success, but still a success even if the +2 for affinity is denied.

It stores the knowledge of the clan leader and contains her level 1 did knowledge. When the campaign started the weapon was taken from her and she forgot her Druid knowledge... But she remembered something about being magic. She fought in the slave pits as a barbarian, but thought she was a mage.
