The Final Countdown

Snap! (DM BatMark)
Monday June 5th, 2023 8:51:49 PM

Berotha sings and thumps along.
Zazu sets the dryad to continue dancing and singing, then throws blinding rays of light at the staff.
Lothlo continues to dance his heart out to fight down the miasma.
Naithi continues to dance and weave the threads of magic, coming closer and closer.
Panzer keeps following Naithi’s lead, performing well.
Nightingale dances up to the staff and heroically tries to pull it from the ground.
Beech stops dancing, and uses arcane insight to help Nightingale extract the staff from the ground.
Sahabiel considers beseeching her patron for a special spell, but soon sees that it is unnecessary.

Your combined efforts on the counter-ritual continue to suppress the miasma of fell magics trying to erupt from the staff. As your song, dance, and spellweaving create an opportunity, Nightingale and Beech combine to use pluck, strength, and arcane knowhow to seize the rotting black staff. It snaps off at the base, and dissolves in a puff of black flecks that fall to the ground.

When the staff is destroyed, the dream-world state surrounding the grove abruptly ends as the dark mists clear with an audible pop. A spattering of formerly undead creatures that composed the flying part of the hemisphere now rain from the sky to lie motionless on the ground. In the normal shadows of the trees of the grove that remain, a pair of headless figures clad in ragged black robes and battered bluish armor appear, razor sharp swords in hand. Each of the pair have a pair of duplicates flitting around them, making it hard to discern exactly which one of the three is the actual creature. Each is accompanied by three zombie-like creatures, which you realize to your horror are undead created from the fallen villagers who had accompanied your apprentices to the grove this morning. Another group of three zombies stands near the great weeping willow north of the center of the grove as well.

The two armored figures give a slow clap, raising their swords in a mocking salute. They somehow produce a voice despite their headless condition. The one to the West says, ”Your cleverness doth surprise me, yet you are most foolish to have attracted the attention of our Dark Master.” while the easternmost one taunts, ”Your persistence doth surprise me, mortal ones. And yet one more test remains!” They sound like they are maliciously enjoying this whole experience, from the suffering of the villagers to the spoiling of the grove. Perhaps arrogantly, they seem to be content with their speechifying at this point…

Please place yourselves on the map in or adjacent to the faerie ring or consecrated area.

OoC: Placed self on map!

Berotha moves quietly over to Panzer and pulls out the key, unlocking the manacles while keeping an eye on the strange undead. "Looks like trouble" she mutters deep and low. Once Panzer is freed, she draws her glaive.

Boyo moves to AN32. Zazu casts levitate on Boyo, who rises 20 ft. Zazu takes out the Rod of Immovability.

Next round Zazu plans to activate the rod as a move action to steady the duo, and then to use ranged attacks.

" Beech, make us all fast, please, while we are all grouped up."
Panzer draws a wand and touches himself, hoping for success. He is greeted with the happy sound of the wand triggering and granting him a shield spell.
He then drops the wand, he will pick it up later, or never. This was a fight they were either going to win, or die trying. Since the headless undead fellas seem chatty he decides to try and buy time for himself to draw his weapons by engaging them.
" Oy, headless freaks! Are you telling me we went through all that nonsense and your boss only left us a handful of corpses and 2 lackeys at the end? He had more pressing business elsewhere? RUDE! Villains can't even be counted on to show up for their own reveal parties these days. Where is it we have to go to actually find this doorknob rather than just kill the hired help? It's spring and we have other stuff to do. RUDE I say."
Panzer takes a 5 foot step back to get between the leftmost group of badness and Beech. Once he has weapons out he expects to be much closer to them, but if they want to come and play in the consecrate, Panzer is not going to stop them. Panzer of course has very little idea what a consecrate will do to them, but as undead, it shouldn't be anything good for them.

Berotha moves to unlock Panzer’s manacles, and warns of trouble. She thinks about casting a spike growth on the enemies to the north next. (OOC: Now that we are in an encounter, please just post one round’s worth of actions in response to each DM post.)
Zazu levitates with Boyo up to 20 feet, and prepares an immovable rod to stabilize them for ranged attacks.
Beech tosses a well-placed party favor at the group of foes to the east, narrowly missing the white birch just beyond them.
Nightingale casts a barkskin on herself, toughening up for the fight ahead.
Sahabiel brings up a shield of faith and moves into a good defensive position.
Panzer calls on Beech to cast a Haste, and draws a wand to raise a shield spell before returning some taunts of his own. He is ready to attack any foe trying to get past him to Beech.
Naithi casts a barkskin of her own, including Canalayas as well.
Lothlo

Beech’s fireball kicks off the party with a bang. Two of the zombie villagers (V7&8) fall in flames, while the third (V9) is badly burned but still moving. It shuffles towards the Champions in the faerie circle. The headless creature (D2) and its flitting duplicates also get scorched, but seems to dodge the worst of the effects. Even worse, you can see some of the burn damage slowly undone by some fell power! He snorts in annoyance and proclaims, ”You are foolish to have attracted the attention of our Dark Master. We broke the spirit of the so-called Tree of Parting heroes, and you seem puny next to them. Beech, can you not feel the deadly power of the Dark Master in your mind even now?” He points at Beech, who can feel death calling for him. (OOC: Beech, please make a DC 24 Fort save (mind affecting curse). On a failure Highlight to display spoiler: {You are staggered (per the condition: A staggered creature may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can still take free, swift, and immediate actions.)})

The headless creature to the west cackles and says, ”Now you will feel the wrath of the Dread Three!” It strides over and ‘looks’ up at Zazu, gesturing and incanting in Sylvan. The trickster finds this unaccountably funny, perhaps dangerously so. Zazu, make a DC16 WILL save. On a failure Highlight to display spoiler: {Zazu is affected by the hideous laughter spell, and is in danger of falling off of Boyo. Make a DC15 ride check, and if that fails, then the percentile check as if unconscious–helped by your exotic military saddle as usual.} As the creature comes nearer, its fell presence seems to take a dark hold on the souls of those nearby. (OOC: Zazu, Boyo, Naithi, Nightingale and Panzer please make DC 19 WILL checks or be Shaken, per the condition.)

Zombies V1 and V2 charge up to Naithi, attempting to slam her, but she dodges their clumsy blows easily. V5 tries the same with Nightingale, with the same poor results. The other zombies shuffle forward but are not close enough to attack.

Two will saves for Zazu. Zazu's save is a +7, but with a racial +2 against enchantments.

An 18 against the DC19 laughter save. If the +2 enchantment bonus applies, the trickster is fine. If not, then a retroactive hero point makes it a save either way. Please let me know. [DM Note: You made the save without spending the hero point.]

And against the shaken condition ... a 10 fails no matter what. Zazu is shaken! -2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Zazu levitates up another 10 ft, casts a tiny hut spell, and then levitates down 10. Thus, the tiny hut (radius 20 ft) is centered 30 ft off the ground, and the lowermost edge is still 10 ft off the ground. Zazu and Boyo are 20 ft off the ground. Now Zazu has total concealment, and so many effects cannot affect him since they require line of sight. And since the elf has total concealment (50% miss chance) but can see through the hut, Zazu is effectively invisible, and all attacks deny the target their dex bonus and gain a +2 bonus to attack (canceling out the shaken effect).

Panzer's bravery kicks in and bolsters his will to resist the shaken condition but that isn't all. Heroes are made from tougher suff. He still doesn't know what these undead are and no one with the ability to tell him what will hurt them is doing so. SOOO being shaken this soon in the fight is not something he wants to even have a chance of occurring. He heroically defies the aura from the undead.

Sahabiel steps forward and releases a wave of positive energy, destroying several of the zombies and injuring the headless D1 slightly–the latter seems to easily shrug off much of the effect. [You are correct that rerolling of ones only occurs on positive energy healing, per the House Rules]
Panzer heroically shakes off the fearsome aura of the headless thing, collects his weapons and taunts the thing a second time.
Zazu fights off the laughter that this thing’s spell sought to cause, rises higher into the air despite being shaken by its fearful presence, and casts a Tiny Hut, providing total concealment against threats from outside.
Beech also shakes off the fear, and casts a Haste to speed up his friend's attacks (affecting all but Zazu and Boyo.)
Lothlo peppers a zombie (V2) with arrows, felling it in a trice.
Naithi and Camalayas are shaken, but muster resolve to fight on. They agilely avoid the nearby zombie as they move to confront the western headless creature (D1). They land what should have been a frostily flaming strike of great precision on the thing, but the strike instead strikes one of its flitting twins, causing that image to wink out.
Nightingale unleashes a flurry of blows on a zombie (V5), doing some damage, but not as much as you expected based on how hard you hit. [Your second attack hit too, so I just repeated the damage from your first attack, less its DR]
Berotha moves forward to a better position and splits one of the zombies (V6) in twain.

The zombie to the north (V4) five-foot step up to NIghtingale and attacks. It strikes her, doing 5hp of damage. V3 charges Lothlo, but misses. By sheer dumb luck, it is positioned just outside of the consecrated area, having followed the shortest path.

The westernmost headless Dread One rounds on Naithi and fights back. Its blade flashes out, striking Naithi for 13hp of weapon damage, and an additional 3hp of cold. Its second attack misses. Dread Two on the east moves forward cautiously, stopping just outside of Berotha’s reach. It raises its regard upward toward where Zazu is trying to hide in the sky, and casts a spell. The Levitate spell on Zazu and Boyo abruptly ends, causing them to fall out of the sky, and the Tiny Hut to end as Zazu leaves its area. Zazu and Boyo are prone at the feet of D1.

A third Dread appears behind Beech, attacking seemingly out of nowhere, and similarly accompanied by two flitting images of itself. ”You come against us full of life, but our Dark Master has shown us the power of life and death combined!” Its blade strikes home once, doing 13hp of weapon damage and 5hp of cold damage.

Beech and Lothlo must make the DC19 WILL saves or be shaken by Dread 3’s fearsome aura.

Panzer moves to defend Beech, striking at Dread 3 after shaking off its fearsome aura (hero point was used). His attack looks promising, but succeeds only in eliminating one of the creature's images.
Zazu slows the fall with a Feather Fall spell, landing neatly instead of prone. The elf fires a scorching ray at Dread One, causing its last image to wink out.
Beech wants nothing to do with the Dread thing, and withdraws to a safer position.
Lothlo musters the will to overcome the fearful creature’s menacing aura, steps back and shoots V3, although the arrow does not seem fully effective against the zombie.
Naithi winces when hit, but retaliates against Dread One, striking it for 21hp of damage.
Nightingale grins when the haste washes over, then unleashes a series of blows that lay V4 low.
Berotha steps toward Dread Two and lashes out with her glaive thrice, removing one image and striking home with the second swing for 30hp of damage.
Sahabiel sees an opportunity and charges in the flank Dread One with Naithi. She strikes for 9hp of damage.

Dread One takes a 5 foot step to get out of the flank, and continues to attack Naithi. Naithi uses her mount as cover, but the first strike still hits her with uncanny precision, doing 26 hp of damage (25hp of weapon damage and 1hp of cold). The Dread One gloats for a moment, but then misses with its second swing. It again heals a some of the damage that it had taken.

Dread Two takes a five foot step back, and casts a spell at Berotha. (She must make a DC17 WILL save (vs necromancy). On a failure Highlight to display spoiler: {You are cursed. Each turn, you must roll d%, and on a 01-50%, you cannot act that turn.} It also heals a some of its damage.

With a nat 10 on both will saves, she fails the second one (not hero-pointed). I'm assuming that I can't add the retroactive, +4 hero point after seeing the effect on the failure, which I would in this case once I saw what a big effect it was. I'll roll d100s assuming that I can't do the +4 hero point. 1d100=35.

Jason Brotha We have some unique hero point rules. Note that in combat you can only use one hero point per turn (ages ago Wold did allow this)

The Wold uses the Hero Point ruleset as outlined in the Pathfinder APG

This includes the sections on 'Awarding' and the 'Using' of hero points with the following alterations:

A character can have a maximum number of hero points equal to their current level
The 'Act out of Turn' ability is not used, as the Wold does not use normal Initiative
The 'Cheat Death' ability is not used
The section on additional rules (including Hero Point feats, spells and magic items) remain off limits.

DMs are encouraged to find ways to award hero points to PCs on a regular basis. This fits with the Wold theme of PCs being good AND heroic.

Interestingly, I just realized they recently removed the Cheat Death usage. I didn't realize that. We also had a wule that you had to use for hero point as the first opportunity. I assume this is still in place, even if not written, but I'm not sure how it applies to using after the DM gives the results. I do know it is allowed if you reroll a failed roll in circumstances that you already know the outcome of a failed roll. Also, ages ago, Jerry has suggested adding to you character sheet of you want to automatically use hero points you reroll something like a save roll made by the DM that if failed would result in your death. I would assume this is still allowed, even if no longer stated under the house rules.

ooc: This post can probably be deleted or made private once Jason/Brotha reads it, or saved for future reference.

Zazu tries a burning hands spell on Dread One, but it seems to slough off the spell. (OOC: Thanks for rolling the SR check after the fact)
Nightingale moves quickly to attack Dread Two, empowering her martial arts with Ki-fueled magic, but unfortunately missing the target this time. (OOC: I rolled randomly to choose which of her three attacks to use, since I don’t think she can full attack after moving. Correct me if I am wrong.)
Berotha stutters and shudders under the weight of the Dread’s curse, and is unable to do anything for a moment. (OOC: As noted by one of the players in email, you can only use one hero point per round.)
Panzer unleashes some honey badger fury on Dread Three, striking it twice and eliminating its last mirror image, doing a total of 37hp of damage!
Naithi disarms Dread One, but not before it slashes her for 14hp of damage as she closes in. Camalayas attacks the Dread, but fails to connect.
Beech reads his scroll, casting Fly, before flying straight up in the air.
Lothlo takes a hard look at the Dreads, and realizes that he has heard of something similar before. These must be some form of Dullahan, undead created by fiends to reap souls from the mortal world. But these Dullahan also have a sort of fey twist, which perhaps explains their extra spellcasting powers. You have already seen that they have the power to curse their foes, greatly weakening them and making them more vulnerable to the Dullahan’s attacks, and the Dullahan’s wounds will slowly heal automatically (Fast Healing 5). They can also summon fiendish mounts, and are harder to harm with positive energy than normal, can more easily stave off electrical attacks, and have all the normal immunities that undead enjoy.
Lothlo then launches a volley of arrows at the last zombie, which along with Sahabiel’s attacks, obliterates it.
Sahabiel also takes a five foot step, and rounds on the last zombie, laying it low in cooperation with Lothlo.

With the last zombie out of the fight, it comes down to a grim battle with the Dread Three. All three are moderately damaged, but continue to battle with a wild abandon unusual for undead creatures such as these. Perhaps the fey twist that Lothlo noticed makes them different than the usual sort.

Dread One takes a five foot step to the southwest before it picks up its sword, avoiding any attacks of opportunity. Seeing Beech rise into the air, it points and hurls a curse at the sorcerer. (OOC: Beech, please make a DC22 Fort save (mind affecting curse effect) or become staggered. If Beech fails the save, please note the rules for flying, which typically require a move action to stay airborne.)

Dread Two attacks Nightingale, but must have been put off by her flurry of blows, because it misses badly with both attacks.

Dread Three, taken aback by the badgerfolk’s furious attack also takes five foot step back and hurls a curse at Panzer. (OOC: Panzer, please make a DC22 Fort save (mind affecting curse effect) or become staggered.)

All three Dreads heal a small amount of damage once again.

Berotha glitches under the effects of the curse again.
Zazu switches to spells that are more likely to land, acid arrowing Dread One for 11hp of damage. The trickster then rides Boyo around in a loop to set up a flank.
Naithi calls out for some healing, then steps back to heal herself and Camalayas. (OOC: Sorry that I forgot to move D1 on the map, good catch. Rather than redraw the map and mess up Sahabiel’s post, I did just 5’ step Naithi back, so she is safe to heal up.)
Nightingale is kungfu fighting, unleashing a hastened flurry of blows, almost landing one strike on Dread Two but instead succeeding in eliminating its last mirror image.
Panzer digs deep but cannot resist the curse that staggers him. He nevertheless makes a hard swing at the Dread in front of him, but fails to connect.
Lothlo warns of these fey creatures’ likely tricks, and looses a barrage of arrows at Dread Three, striking twice for a total of 29hp of damage.
Beech is also staggered, but his extensive flying training pays off, allowing him to stay aloft and cast an ice storm. Unfortunately, the Dread’s resistance to spells protects it from the effects.
Sahabiel steps up to Dread One after seeing that Naithi has healed, and makes a hasted full attack, injuring it for 18hp of damage.

The tide of the battle seems to be swinging against the Champions, despite their quick dispatch of the zombies. Berotha is cursed into intermittent inaction, and both Panzer and Beech are staggered by a different curse. The Dreads are slowly healing, although you are hurting them faster than they can repair the wounds.

Dread One turns to face Sahabiel and attempts to return the favor for all the damage she inflicted. She dodges the blows agilely, and the Dread One hisses in anger.

Dread Two continues to attack Nightingale, hitting her with two critical hits. Nightingale takes 41hp of weapon damage and 9hp of cold damage, leaving her unconscious and bleeding on the ground. Dread Two hisses in pleasure, although it doesn’t sound too much different from One’s anger.

Dread Three looms over the staggered Panzer, striking out twice. It hisses in frustration as its blows go wide!

Note: The acid arrow from last round inflicts another 2d4 damage ... that's 6 acid damage to D1.

Seeing that Panzer is in trouble, Zazu races south.

[OOC: Not sure what is up with the map, so maybe that triggers an AoO from D1? If so, Zazu hopes to survive the AoO and moves south anyway]

From 44 AM, Zazu reads another Acid Arrow spell from the scroll and aims at D3.

Is Zazu out of the Shaken Aura area? Maybe the trickster has the -2 for being shaken, maybe not. There's also the -4 shooting into melee. The elf hits a ranged touch AC of 10, or 8 with the shaken penalty Pretty sure that's a miss, but if not, that's 3 hp acid damage.

Naithi has no time relax after Camalayas is healed. She watches as things move in slow motion as Nightingale goes down. She motions for Sahabiel to flank with her if possible. There is no more time for finesse or coordinated attacks. This has become a battle of attrition, and with the enemies fast health she realizes that means Camalayas and herself need to increase their damage output, even if they means increasing their accuracy and risk to themselves.

...ooc: the dice gods may have taken notice of our despair, because this is the single best round of action I've rolled this entire campaign!...

Sahabiel would like to work with Naithi to flank their enemy, but the problem with Beech's ice storm is that it gives the Dread cover on just about all sides where they can't move into without suffering friendly fire.. or ice, as the case would be, so it is not going to be as easy as it could have been. She does move into a position that will at least allows Naithi to get into such a position with just another 5'step...

Making the most of this burst of speed she has been given, Sahabiel agrees with Naithi on the point of this being about attrition now.. if this twisted undead/fey creature is going to heal itself back up if they don't kill it all the way, then she can't afford to let up on the barrage of attacks!

With shield defiantly raised and morning star swinging, she presses with another full round of attacks!

Zazu’s acid does another 6hp of damage to Dread One. The elf hustles south to help Panzer, firing off another acid arrow that just barely misses. The trickster is not close enough to Dread Three to get caught in its fear aura.
Beech drops an ice storm on Dread Two, which gets through its spell resistance and does 18 hp of damage.
Lothlo sees Panzer in danger and sends a rain of arrows to help out against Dread Three. Doing 11hp of damage.
Naithi watches Nightingale fall, and motions for Sahabiel to flank with her. She and Camalayas unleash a hasted full attack on Dread One, battering it with numerous claw and energy attacks for a total of 27hp of damage.
Nightingale dreams of warmth and safety, but the warmth is really her lifeblood slowly draining away.
Berotha is once more under the grip of the curse, but then breaks free and is finally free to act!
Panzer soldiers on in the face of this dreadful Dread, and strikes a solid blow. The thing is grievously damaged, but not quite out of the fight.
Sahabiel agrees with Naithi’s assessment of the situation, and launches a furious attack on Dread One, smashing it three times with her morning star.

Dread One drops to its knees after Sahabiel’s first blow, struggling to remain upright, but her second blow lays it low, and the third ensures that it will never stir again. It collapses with a hissing shriek, then its armor deflates as its deanimated body disappears in a cloud of black dust scattered on the breeze.

Dread Two casts a spell and disappears from sight.

Dread Three is barely holding on to its unlife, but refuses to give up the ghost, as it were. It makes another pair of strikes on Panzer, the first one hitting a weak point in his armor and skewering him for 22hp of weapon damage and an additional 6hp of cold.

Have our Champions yet again turned the tide of battle? One of your foes is clearly destroyed, another is no longer in sight, and the third is fighting on, but clearly on its last legs. Of course, two of you remain cursed and one of your party is leaking her essence into the soil of the grove…

Sahabiel lets out a raw cry of triumph as her morning star crushes the (un)life out of the headless armored figure. Whatever her enemy was on about, he is now for the gods to sort out.

Finally seeing the situation that had largely been behind her on the battlefield while she was fighting Dread One, Sahabiel hurries from [AL34] to [AY34], and thanks to still being under the Haste spell, she can make it there in a single quick sprint! Unfortunately, while that leaves her perfectly positioned to help the collapsed and bleeding Nightingale, it leaves her without the breath to do so.

Berotha moves down to attack Dread Three as well, but misses in her enthusiasm. She is ready if the Dread offers any moments of opportunity.
Lothlo shoots Dread Three with three arrows–how fitting!--doing 40hp of damage. Dread Three stops twitching and collapses into a puff of black flakes like Dread One did when destroyed.
Beech casts a spell and can see Dread Two (in AU32). He calls out the location to his companions.
Sahabiel cries out in triumph as her foe is crushed back into unlife. She hurries down to be ready to heal Nightingale.
Naithi casts faerie fire on Dread Two’s area when Beech points it out.
Nightingale continues to bleed on the ground.

Dread Two, apparently having decided that letting Berotha leave without making an attack of opportunity was the better part of wisdom, takes a five foot step over to attack Lothlo. Lothlo can see the attack coming, thanks to Naithi’s faerie fire, and is able to nimbly dodge both blows!

Naithi moves to the attack despite trepidation over whether she and Camalayas can take another hit. They make their save against the new fear aura, and strike Dread 2 for 18hp of damage. (OOC: Haste only adds attacks on a Full Attack action)
Beech tosses magic missiles at the Dread, doing 12hp of force damage. His curse also ends, freeing him to act normally.
Lothlo stumbles back from the Dread that unexpectedly appeared so close, and shoots a hail of arrows in every direction except directly at it.
Panzer moves around the last remaining Dread, despite shaking a bit at this latest horror (this is the one Dread that Panzer has not yet saved against the fear aura of.) The Dread slashes Panzer as the badgerfolk moves around him (AoO), doing 13hp of weapon damage and 5hp of cold damage. Panzer shows the thing how the whole critical hit trick really works, doing 31hp of damage in return.
Sahabiel trades a future divination for some healing now, and salves Nightingale’s wounds for 32hp.
Nightingale dreams of Maab and Ffloy and how they fit in the world. Her thoughts swim back to the surface world and there is a beautiful face looking down on her, fuzzy at first, could it be the Queen herself? Alas, no, but nearly as wonderful, it is Sahabiel, filling Nightingale with the natural healing of the Culverwood! Nightingale is now conscious but prone, at 26hp.
Berotha hesitates…

The last Dread wobbles under the barrage of blows both physical and magical, but remains on its feet. It is clearly hanging on by a thread. ”You may destroy me, but you cannot defeat us. The Dark Master has shown us the path to ultimate power, life and death combined! So come, let us see if I can right that balance for some of you before my time is done.” It attacks Panzer twice, but fails to connect against the heavily protected badgerfolk.

If everybody working together fails to take it down, Zazu sighs and offers a little help with a ray of frost. The wizard hits Touch AC26 with a nat 20! Rolling to confirm the crit is likely a hit against Touch AC13? Roll for SR is a 22. If it all works out, that's 4 hp cold damage. If it is even affected by cold, lol!

Friday June 16th, 2023 6:35:23 PM

Sahabiel smiles at Nightingale, and then turns around and positions herself with her shield up in full defense on the line between the last remaining Dread and her cousin working her magic. Having heard it speak of wanting to take at least one of them down with him, she considers the possibility this enemy might try to throw itself against the prone Nightingale again... and she will not allow that to happen.

Total Defense - Sahabiel makes herself an obstacle in the path of any charge or rush maneuver Dread Two could make in even the general direction of Nightingale, and her own AC for the next round goes up to a full 30

Moonbeam (DM BatMark)
Friday June 16th, 2023 10:10:43 PM

Nightingale grins up at Sahabiel with thanks, then rolls over and consecrates another patch of the grove, prompting a snarl from the Dread.
Panzer moves into a flanking position and launches sharp wit and blade, doing grave insult and 39hp of damage, which is enough to bring down the foe.
Berotha returns to the second Dread and adds to the destruction, pulverizing the undead creature with her glaive.
Zazu celebrates the Champions’ fighting well together, and collects some Dread dust for later.
Beech soars up to serve as death from above, but finds that his arrow is no longer needed.
Lothlo mocks the Dread’s service of a dark master, and is ready with more arrows. (OOC: You can tell that these shots would be redundant, so you have the option to save the ammo if you like.)
Sahabiel smiles back at Nightingale and prepares to shield her in case the Dread reemerges as a threat.
Naithi waits

The last Dread, already badly damaged, is completely wrecked by the concentrated attacks of the heroes. It drops its wicked blade and falls over to lie motionless before repeating the demise of its companions, dissolving into a cloud of black ash that settles to the ground around where it fell. There is a brief moment of preternatural silence, followed by a great roaring like a mighty wind, yet there is none to be felt. A dizzying array of sights and lights next fills the area, dazzling and confounding, before quickly giving way to complete darkness. Out of the gloom, however, you see a mote of moonlight far above, which descends toward the grove…

Panzer seconds the healing recommendation, and is wary of the light.
Zazu detects magic on the dust, blades, and other gear. Only the blades register anything, showing up as transmutation. Further inspection determines that all three are +1 keen longswords.
Nightingale rolls to sit up, and begins singing some healing energy to the party (4hp each to those in range, then 10hp more).
Berotha nods in satisfaction over the good fight against the abominations that toyed with her mind, even though she’s seen worse getting here.
Beech appreciates the healing and looks out for clues before getting jumped again.
Sahabiel joins Naihi in studying the motes of light as they descend.
Lothlo watches the mote descend, wary even though it doesn’t seem like an attack.

Naithi and Sahabiel study the mote of moonlight, and see signs that Naithi’s first instinct was correct, this seems to be a sign from Queen Maab herself! Your conclusions are reinforced when the moonbeam descends to the grove, and spreads to limn the area in silvery goodness. You realize that the moonlight has taken the form of draconic wings that enfold the outer trees of the grove, bathing you in a comforting light. From above, more lights appear, these moving faster, streaking down toward the grove like shooting stars. They land nearby within the grove, and you can see that they are sparking blue gems, glowing with an internal light that slowly dims, leaving behind the beautiful stones like dew in the grass. More slowly, eight silver-blue flower blossoms windmill down, one coming toward each of you. They hover before each of you, as if waiting. A dreamlike voice speaks into each of your minds, the exact words hard to remember, but essentially delivering the same message to all, ”I am well pleased that you have thwarted these dark ones. You have done well and bravely what needed to be done. I must remain behind the Veil in these matters, but perhaps these gifts will ease your burdens and strengthen you for the way ahead. But for now, peace, my children, a moment of peace is yours.” The presence in your minds recedes, but does leave behind a serene, natural calm for those that wish to experience it. What do you do with respect to the flowers and gems?

Monday June 19th, 2023 8:36:12 PM

Panzer gratefully accepts the healing and berries from Nightenale and Naithi and scampers around gathering up his dropped gear. When presented with the stone and flower he stops running around and pays it serious mind. He kneels before the Power of Queen Maab. None of you have even known Panzer to be in any way devout to any religion. In fact he often speaks against the Culverwood for being murderous and intent on killing the unprepared.
This was different. This was a Woldian power acknowledging that they had aided it in a way that the Power cannot aid itself. It seems thankful, sincere and most of all, to realize what it had taken to lend this aid and willing topay the aid back in kind.
Panzer murmurs in a low voice, seemingly between himself and the Power only, but audible to the rest of you." Thank you Queen Maab. I accept your gifts and pledge my support to help rid the Wold of this threat. They attack the weak and the helpless and toy with the minds of the unprepared. Help me harden my defenses versus these things and I will help stop them from fouling the Culverwood."
He rises and opens his hands to the floating flower, accepting it into his grasp. Similarly he retrieves one of the stonesand waits for the others to make their reaction to the Queen.

Zazu bows and grins. "The Lady is too kind indeed!" the trickster says.

The elf takes a gem and presses it very hard right between the eyes, perfectly centered, as if it were a third eye, or the mark common in real world Indian culture. After pushing it in as hard as possible, Zazu lets go and hopes it stays in place.

The wizard gives the flower to Boyo, who sniffs it and then eats it.

"I hope that won't give you indigestion," says Zazu, gently.

Naithi stands in awe before the Immortal Power that has done so much to shape her life. She last saw Queen Maab in her dreams last year when the Queen gave her a precious gift. She had wrapped Naithi in a cocoon and transformed her into one of the Queens Morphlings. Now, here she is again, offering her another gift.

Naithi bows down to the Immortal Power, quickly followed by Camalayas, Fizzgig, Jen and Cuddly Mule. She places the flower in her hair, weaving it in with the other flowers created by the Fruit and Flower anymore Maab gave her and the gem she places into the pin used to fasten her cloak.

Thank you Queen Maab for you generous gifts. Your presence honors us, and we are glad to have been able to be of service to you. While you are here, if is not to much of a bother, could you please bless my Druid Grove? I wish for it to be a safe place for fey to visit and to help mend relations between fey and mortals. In awe of being in the presence of a direct divine manifestation, Sahabiel bows her head and very respectfully holds out both hands together so that the flower slowly drifting down towards her can land gently in her palms. When it has, she bends the knee and picks up the gemstone that struck the ground by where she was standing.

Sahabiel initially waits for Nightingale to speak first, as her cousin is the one closer to Queen Maab. She stands with flower resting on one hand and gem held between two fingers in the other - but when the feeling of a voice in her head fades and leaves natural calm in its wake, Sahabiel instead allows herself to just enjoy the moment in silence. She will.. look into what these gifts are soon, but it can wait for now as a moment of such serenity too is a gift that deserves to be appreciated.

I accept your gifts and pledge my support (DM BatMark)
Tuesday June 20th, 2023 8:59:53 PM

Panzer gratefully accepts healing from his companions, and gathers his dropped gear before stopping to kneel, quite uncharacteristically before the Power of Queen Maab. He thanks her for the gifts and promises to help stop these foul foes from threatening the Culverwood. He catches a flower in his hand and retrieves one of the gems.
Zazu bows and grins, calling the Lady too kind, before trying to emplace a gem as a third eye (unsuccessfully). The elf grasps the flower and offers it to Boyo who sniffs and prepares to eat it, but then does not despite the trickster’s expectations!
Nightingale also thanks the Lady, tucks her flower behind her ear, and examines the closest gem. She looks to see whether her companions need any additional healing.
Berotha is awed by this scene, retrieving the nearest flower and gem with thanks. She agrees with Panzer that the messing with of minds was most unpleasant.
Beech welcomes anything that brings peace to this place, and tucks away a flower and gem.
Naithi is awed before Queen Maab, who last visited her in a dream and is now offering tangible gifts. She and her companions bow down before the Lady, and she weaves the flower into her hair, and places the gem into her cloak clasp. She audaciously asks for another boon from the Lady, a blessing upon this grove. There is no spoken response, but she does get the feeling that the request pleased the Queen. (OOC: We can work out details as your proposal for the BGC is resolved.)
Lothlo puts his flower in his hair, and pockets a gem, thanking Queen Maab as well.
Sahabiel carefully cups her hands to catch the flower, bends the knee, and retrieves her gem. She decides not to overthink the moment, instead savoring the moment.

As each of you accept your flower, you feel a choice has been placed before you. How will you use this boon from the Fey Queen? What appeals to you most–light, talon, resolve, friendship, arcana, second chances, or something else? (OOC: Please take a look at this document describing Maab’s Multi-hued Moonflowers. You may select your gift from those available in the document, and record your choices on your character sheet.)

The gems are now mundane, but very fine, star sapphires. There are actually about two dozen of them total, once you seek and collect them all. You will need time to appraise them expertly, but they are surely worth many thousands of gold pieces, all together.

The silvery light enveloping the grove retreats, leaving the grove oddly calm and peaceful. By the light of mid-day, you see the bodies of the nine villagers-turned-zombies, and the gear left behind by the Dread Ones when the creatures themselves were defeated and turned to ash.

(OOC: You each earn a Hero Point as a story award for defeating the Dread Three. This is in addition to the one that you will gain when we level up on July 1st.)

Zazu is briefly chagrined to not have the third eye thing work out. He shares the Moonflower with Boyo, and it starts to glow as Moonlight Blossom.
Beech is fine with taking a benefit from this unusual benefactor, allegiance to Alemi or no.
Lothlo is amazed by the beauty of the flower, seemingly speechless for the moment as he thinks about his choice.
Naithi has a hard time choosing a gift, but settles on the resilience boon as well. She asks for further guidance, but gets no discernible response.
Nightingale spins her flower and smiles that the Fey Queen must be very pleased to grant this Boon that she weaves into her hair.
Berotha grins at her tough little flower, and appreciates its resilience.
Sahabiel recalls being wrapped in darkness before, and chooses the Moonlight Bloom, making it part of a necklace. She then looks around for what needs doing next, noting the possible need for healing, the bodies of the dead villagers, and the remaining gear of the Dreads.

As you stand about admiring your gifts and thinking about what to do next, you hear a rustling in the trees surrounding the grove. Before you even have time to tense up or react, you see that Sahabiel’s leshy friends have returned! They advance into the center of the grove, cautiously at first, then more freely and joyously as they celebrate the lifting of the curse, moving about the grove to check on the various flora.

But then she sees the calm, positive response of her allies and does a few katas with her glaive, trying to pass her reaction off as an attempt to cool down from the battle. "Um... you know these... folks?"

Naithi smiles as the leshy return. These are Leshy, a type of plant-bodied spirit gardeners that help look after the Weeping Grove and Sahabiel's tree and garden when we are not around...well, them and my apprentice. Last year Sahabiel, with a little help from myself, created (a combination of growing and summoning I believe) the first sunflower leshy last year. It was lonely and desired to be part is a community, so we have been raising more. They are quite friendly and help us to have more peaceful relations with the visiting fey of the Culverwood.

Essentially, leshys are sentient plants who look after their unintelligent brethren. The sunflower leshys serve as the ambassadors and diplomats of leshykind. They are the race's peacemakers and shun martial activities and conflict unless forced into confrontation. That is part of why the fey feel particularly safe and at home in this grove.

ooc: My apologies, but due to life being chaotic since COVID and the way things have evolved, both by player roleplay and DM plot progression, I have lost track of some important druid grove and Leshy information and need Sahabiel's/Esther's clarification.

I cannot remember if Sahabiel and Naithi are sharing a grove or each have their own groves. Naithi created her grove closer to the Deep Culverwood than Freedom's Landing. Naithi helped Sahabiel grow the first Leshy (Sahabiel was the creator, she just borrowed my magic) by Sahabiel's tree and Sahabiel hoped this would help her connect the land behind her tree to the Deep Culverwood, and if so was going to create her own grove there. After that things blur together. I don't know if her tree is in Freedom's Landing or close to the Weeping Grove (the temporary name I gave it since ask the trees are weeping willow type trees). I'm not sure if we are sharing a grove, have separate groves, or if she is waiting to complete her Leshy project before starting a grove. I'm fine either way, but don't want to keep referring to it as my grove is we are sharing.

Panzer follows Beech's lead and gathers enough fallen branches to make a Travois to drag the villagers back to Their culverwood and then back to the village so that they can be buried. That part isn't his deal. He doesn't know about orcish burial rites or how the bodies will be handled (buried, cremated, air graves) but he knows the villagers will want the remains of their dead for the ceremony.

There may be a lot to do, but top priority should be to go back to the village to make sure everyone there is safe and there are no people in immediate need of aid. They were pretty slow, so hopefully we were fast enough that they didn't make it into the town.

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 26/15/22 -- HP: 60/60
Thursday June 22nd, 2023 5:57:55 PM

Sahabiel smiles at Berotha, for who this must be new. "Ah, Berotha - ya had not heard about the leshy yet I take it? They are friends. They are.. well, there is a little more to cover there than there is the time for retelling now, but remind me later I owe ya the story, hm?" She gives the minotaur a supportive pat on the arm. "Also, thank ya for fighting at our side here. I could understand if ya were not be the most pleased about your share of the battle, but don't let yerself forget - even if ya did not get to strike many blows, if yer being on the field made our enemies have to pay attention to one more, ya made it easier for all the rest of us to defeat them."

Shortly after, she kneels down by one of her Leshy allies to hear how these events have been for them, and also to ask it to let her know if they find the grove is going to need anything special to recover.

Secure in the knowledge that the little nature spirits can be trusted to take care of what the grove needs right now, she instead sets herself to the sad but necessary task of assisting Beech with gathering up the dead for burial, and making sure that nobody picks up anything cursed from the items the Dreads left behind. "...Nightingale consecrated the ground over here, use whatever equivalent to a ten-foot pole ya need to push anything with even a remotely suspicious aura into that area before trying to identify it, and enjoy a little of Maab's protection, since she seems to be smiling on us today."

(ooc: Can we get an inventory list of what we come across as we go over the area?)

ooc: Sahabiel and Naithi share the same grove, and Sahabiel is entirely unworried about whose grove it might be - as a site of power for natural magic, even if we planted the seed ourselves, we can only cultivate it but it is not given to mortals to call themselves the owner of such in true spirit, no more than a parent can claim to own a child or an artist can own their muse. Such is Sahabiel's opinion on the matter.

They Are Ours, Sort Of (DM BatMark)
Thursday June 22nd, 2023 9:25:40 PM

Berotha is startled by the emergence of the unfamiliar leshy, but takes her cues from her companions and plays it cool.
Beech figures that you need to deal with the slain villagers first, and starts to drag them away.
Naithi smiles as the leshy return, explaining them to Berotha.
Panzer helps Beech move the dead villagers, making a travois to help get them back to town.
Zazu identifies the three blades again, noting that they are still +1 keen longswords. The ash remains non-magical. Nothing else seems magical, but now that he looks closely, the blue armor of one of the Dread’s seems different than the others. Where two sets are blued steel scale mail, this one is made of something different. The scales seem natural, not manufactured, and the suit is finely crafted and relatively supple.
Nightingale helps with the bodies and belatedly warns that the Dreads’ gear might be cursed, but Zazu has already handled them once before.
Lothlo opines that the top priority should be to get back to town and make sure that everyone is safe.
Sahabiel smiles at Berotha and adds her own explanation of the leshy. She compliments Berotha’s role in the victory, even though she did not get to strike many blows. She talks with the leshy and inquires as to the health of the grove, then turns to helping with the bodies and making suggestions for the safe handling of the loot.

Having taken a closer look, your total haul of gear from the Dreads comprises three +1 keen longswords, three mundane longbows, 60 arrows, three tattered black cloaks (ruined beyond any normal use), and three suits of blue scale armor. Two of the suits of armor are Masterwork Scale Mail. The other one of the suits of armor, as Zazu has discovered, is made of something natural, not blued steel. If you make a DC 25 arcana check, Highlight to display spoiler: {This appears to be made of the hide of a blue dragon! Rules for this can be found here: http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Item:_Woldian_Dragonhide.} And of course you have the two dozen or so star sapphires, plus your wondrous gifts from Queen Maab. (OOC: These will be enough to bring you each up to proper 9th level WBL (46000gp) once you have determined what to do with the other loot. If you are somehow already over that WBL milestone, you gain only 1000gp on top of whatever you currently have.)

Your conversations with the leshy and your own examination suggest that your actions–and perhaps the added touch of the Fey Queen’s light–have broken the curse on the grove, and you detect no signs of lingering negative effects. With the bodies and travois prepared, you are ready to head back toward the village if you wish.

Naithi stares in awe at the armor the enemy was wearing and begins to wonder more about the Dread's background and who might be backing them. Woah, that blue dragon scale armor is beyond incredible! It's like a shimmering work of art... And it looks about me size... and it's perfect for someone that can't wear metal armor... So, anyone mind if I take it? Naithi smiles hopefully. I promise to put it to good use and make our enemies shake in their undead boots. What do you say, team? Can this little demi-fey rock the dragon scales?

Naithi looks down and sees her clan's weapon, the god's paw, glowing. Apparently it absorbed some of the Dread's energy from the last fight. Arrogance, confidence, and something else. Hopefully he provided her with some useful skills as well.

"So, we were trapped in the fortress of Scarwall in Koshe-Marr, deprived of many of our magics and unable to rest except rarely, have to find and kill 4 guardians (an undead black dragon, an undead cleric, a devil with her many minions, and an insane fighter who carries a magic-wielding artifact) and then an immortal chained guardian that can't be harmed without killing the other four guardians first. This only gave us the opportunity to fight the guardian of a lost magical sword who turns out to be the one who trapped us in Scarwall in the first place because it was going insane and wanted to die, but couldn't just lay down nicely and take it. And THEN, we found out that to get back to the Wold, we had to destroy the holy and good artifact that is Sablihelm. With all this happening, I learned one thing for sure, that it is good to have friends.

Well, with Sablihelm's willing help, we broke the sword, and the magic freed not only us, but all of Scarwall too! We now have our own castle, just out of Acid City, and a whole bunch of gold that we can use to make Scarwall into a symbol for good once again. "

Sahabiel informs the members of the council of what transpired at the grove as best as she can piece it together from what she saw. In conclusion she adds, "I know that Freedom Landing was founded as a place of safety and refuge for those that fled from lives subjugated under the tribes of the Izen, and it is regrettable that just when things are starting to go well, we find that it may have to become a place that will hold the line against dangers such as these. I will do my part in keeping all here safe."

(ooc: Actually, I have a real point of concern there.. Freedom Landing is still just a village starting to make its way up, and recent events have had a direct attack take place there, then our bridge grew vines, and now again with this undead threat.. I know it would be unrealistic to ask that nothing bad ever happen to our 'downtime home' at all, but I do ask to consider that if we lose 6 people to zombification like at the grove, that is not some negligible number - that is like 2% of our entire population, and because literally everyone that lives in Freedom Landing was brought there by the party, it hits kind of harder since we are supposed to at least sort of have known all these people..?

On her way home she picks up some fresh ingredients for Limka's cooking, and once there she takes a seat at the table and starts reading.. there was some point to what Panzer had asked her. A leshy would be unsuitable, but...

When she is still reading by evening, Limka asks what is on her mind. "Just an idea.. Sahabiel says with a sigh; "All this talk of Dark Masters and it all connecting to what those dark druids are doing with the Culverwood... we do need some kind of eyes and ears on the ground in there that would warn us when it looks like the village is going to be in danger again. Panzer even asked me to send a leshy but.. well, not a good idea. But I have been thinking...". She shakes her head and puts her reading away. "...if this keeps up, I might have to call on a silvanshee. I am just not sure what I could offer it to make it stay around."

Yet they share Sahabiel’s concern that perhaps too much attention is being drawn to the hamlet from the fell powers at work in the Culverwood. No decisions are made but they resolve to continue discussions about what to do next.

In the meantime, there is much to be done. There are the dead to be buried, and daily life to carry on. What part do you wish to play in either matter? Do you have other works to attend to?

Panzer Braun (David F) AC 28 (T16, FF24) CMD 29 HP 78/100 ) Character Sheet
Wednesday June 28th, 2023 2:51:06 AM

When Panzer returns he tells the others that the Culverwood is just as dark as it was before. The undead they beat were apparently not connected to the main darkness, just sent here to see if they could kill us. If Sahabiel mentions wanting to summon a spy for them in the Culverwood he asks directly if we know where these druids are. If we know, then he suggests skipping the spy and just going to see the druids in person and resolving this darkness issue.
He retires to the tavern for a rest and a cup of Tea. While there he hears Lothlo talking about re-tasking the lyre to build walls. He nearly crushes the teacup in his hands when he hears this.Fredo and Panzer spent the better part of six(?) months digging the Ditch and Berm for the town perimeter because they didn't have the materials to make a palisade and no one wanted to piss off the murder forest by cutting trees. Now its all changed....
Panzer leaves his tea and retires to his burrow. He draws a bath and looks over the wound that nearly collapsed his lung back there in the grove. That Dread got lucky, and so did Panzer. If that thrust had been an inch more towards his center of mass then he would have been coughing up blood. He sat in the bath water while it cooled and let that sink in.
Why was he trying to save a forest that has never given him any reason to think it didn't want to kill him? Then he remembered Naithi following him to the 'Wood so he wouldn't get lost just a few minutes ago. He remembered the villagers he had helped drag back and the fight in the grove. He was trying to save the 'Wood because all of these people were part of it. People he liked having around.
He got out of the bath and dressed his wound and decided to get some rest. They needed facts about this Dark Lord guy and this place didn't have them, Karri might. He turned in early. Karri was along walk.

Berotha (Jason W) -- AC: 21/13/18, HP: 85/85, CMD: 28
Wednesday June 28th, 2023 9:04:27 AM

Berotha pulls out her shovel and spends her time helping bury the dead. Unsure what rites these mainlanders use, she listens and learns then follows along respectfully. When she gets a chance to talk to the other heroes, she asks "So we are trying to find this Dark Lord fellow next, eh? Seems important. I can try to help track them if we find a trail. But magical divinations and the like are not my specialty."

Sahabiel (EstherLauren) -- AC 26/15/22 -- HP: 60/60
Wednesday June 28th, 2023 3:46:53 PM

Sahabiel shakes her head in answer to Panzer's question. "I'm afraid not. We have nothing whatsoever to go on as to where the center of these dark influences lies. I will remind you that the Culverwood is not a forest within the Emerald Kingdom - rather, the entire Emerald Kingdom is but a particularly large clearing within the much greater Culverwood. And by greater, I mean by an order of magnitude.. for those of you who may have never contemplated on the enormity of the Culverwood's reach, you should know that it stretches from Blackbird Lake to where the Red Hills meet the Scab, and from the Windbourne Hills to the land of the Izen, so the elders of my childhood home village teach. As those visiting older adventurers made clear, they were seeing these druids and their activities over at the Tree of Parting long before the problems came into focus here, so.. the heart of the problem may not even be on what we can call by proximity our side of the woods. No, until events deliver unto us more clues as to where the true source of our problems lies, the best we can do is to keep watch over what is near, in hope that we will be alerted as timely as possible to emerging threats in our area."

Sahabiel also slightly has to rain on Lothlo's wall building plans, pointing out that the settlement's wondrous Lyre of Building has already been proven to merely provide the equivalent of the labor needed to build a wall out of stone and mortar provided -- it has never provided either stone or the mortar out of thin air, and the town does not have stores of either in the volumes that would be needed.. the output of the brick kiln and the quarry have been going into the housing that until now had been the focus of the use of most construction going on both by lyre and traditional means, so there wouldn't be much of such materials stored up?

Sahabiel performs her part of the funeral rites for the deceased dutifully, as would be expected of her being the most senior local member of the clergy of the Culverwood, but leaves most of the practical work surrounding it to the rest of the community. Instead, she will work with Ghundit to prepare more healing herbs to fill the stores of the village's pharmacy, both to advance her apprentice's learning, and to be prepared for a future sudden surge in wounded if the town should come under attack again.

Lastly, when Panzer travels to Karri on the next trade ship, Sahabiel will accompany him for the journey, as she has business with the Woldian League of Adventurers.

Sahabiel will pay her dues to unlock the full benefits of Guardian rank membership (2,500) and would like to use the WLA library there in the kingdom capital to aid her research into how she might convince a silvanshee of the worthiness of the cause or, alternatively, learn about a means of payment it would find agreeable. (I have two ideas up front about how this could go.. either we can play it out as a mini adventure for Sahabiel to earn the service she needs from a silvanshee in a 'one service is worth another' arrangement, or if you'd rather not come up with a mini mission every time Sahabiel tries to ask a boon from something she summons with Planar Ally, I would suggest treating her current research as 'spell research' for a new prayer under the name 'Fruit of Devotion' which would channel the divine energy of the spell slot it was cast from into a fruit, lending it a certain trade value to creatures summoned with Planar Ally. Same "Spell Level x Caster Level x 10" formula as the calculation for NPC spellcasting services? And yes, this idea borrows heavily from both the fruit of devotion concept in medieval Christianity, and the role of peaches in particular in the heavenly realms of Chinese mythology.)

I know that none of those that fell would want to have any part in any future such attacks. We should take extra care when burying them to make sure they are secure so that there spirits can rest easy knowing that their bodies can't be used for the same evil that they fell to.

Going Back to Karri (DM BatMark)
Wednesday June 28th, 2023 11:47:02 PM

Panzer delivers his scouting report and suggest going directly after the Dark Druids, if anyone knows how to find them. He gets some rest and is all for going to Karri next.
Sahabiel reminds that you do not know where to find the Dark Druids, pitches in with the dead, and gathers healing herbs for future use. She is happy to join in a trip to Karri to research at the WLA.
Zazu says words for the dead.
Beech regrets how far it would be to go to mother for help, so settles for some good food.
Lothlo helps with the dead and suggests taking steps to make sure that their spirits stay quiet.
Naithi helps with the dead before returning to the grove and her apprentice.
Nightingale refocuses on her religious learning.
Berotha helps bury the dead and is available to track anything needed, but not so skilled at some of the arcane questions at hand.

The dead are safely buried and their spirits set on their way as best you can. They show no signs of being restive, at least. The families and local notables appreciate your help. The Council decides to declare the day an annual commemoration of the Battle of the Grove, honoring both the fallen and the heroes who kept the situation from devolving into something even worse. They propose a solemn feast for this year, and make hurried preparations.

The weekly boat is preparing to depart for Karri for any who wish to go that way. Those who choose to remain in the hamlet also find things returning to some semblance of normal, although things do seem a bit subdued after the recent events.

Berotha (Jason W) -- AC: 21/13/18, HP: 85/85, CMD: 28
Thursday June 29th, 2023 7:46:31 PM

The minotaur finds the law enforcement of freedom's landing fascinating and pulls out her notebook, filling pages with notes in her large but meticulous handwriting. These heroes were investigators, judges, and executioners all rolled into one. Obviously, this wasn't ideal but they seemed to get the job done fairly well while keeping loosely within the recommendations of the elders, a more traditional authority.

When time comes for the boat to Karri, she hesitates. She certainly wants to be in on any investigations but she also fears to leave the town alone so shortly after the vicious attack. "Um... should I go with you or stay and keep an eye on the town?" she asks the members of her newly forged battle alliance.

Naithi bathes a secluded pool and fountain she created in the grove and then slowly laces up the dragon scale armor, feeling the smooth scales against her skin. As she dons each piece, a surge of energy courses through her veins. The armor fits like a second skin, hugging her petite frame perfectly while accentuating her curves. With every movement, the iridescent blue scales catch the light and shimmer in all their glory, casting an otherworldly glow around Naithi. She strikes poses with confidence and grace; each angle showcasing both strength and beauty harmoniously intertwined.

Naithi possesses an alluring blend of child like innocence and an ethereal quality that is as delicate as a fairy's wings. It stands in complete contrast with her outfit as she grabs a black coat that embraces her balletic form with grace, the silver embroidery now resembling shimmering moonlight on midnight skies. She had it meticulously tailored from the Bogey Man's Coat and personally added the silver embroidery that seem to iridesce with hidden energy.

Her cloak, crafted from one of the Three Dread's, whispers softly in the breeze like dancing leaves, while glimpses of blue dragon scale mail peek out like hints of magic within the depths of a forest glade causing her appearance to to teeter an enchanting balance between vulnerability and strength.

After getting dressed Naithi and Sahabiel patrol their druid grove. She surveys the aftermath of the undead invasion and sees broken trees and wilted flowers. With a determined gaze, she summons her magical energies and begins to restore the damage. Her hands touch each wounded plant with care, infusing it with new life. The grove slowly regains its vitality under Naithi's nurturing touch, blossoming once again in vibrant hues of whites, greens and purples.

Naithi visits her young apprentice, Amara. With bright emerald eyes and a cascade of chestnut curls, Amara's beauty is matched only by her gentle nature. She is shy and introverted, she possesses an innate connection to the natural world that piques Naithi's interest. Naithi guides Amara with patience and encouragement, nurturing the flame of potential burning within her heart. As they train together amidst the rustling leaves, Naithi feels pride swell in her chest—Amara is destined for greatness.

It is a shame that Amara's reserved and introspective nature, combined with her deep connection to nature, often isolates her from the bustling village. The villagers find her quietness unsettling and struggle to understand her profound insights.

Amara finds solace in the solitude of the grove but yearns for acceptance from those who misunderstand her unique gifts.

Naithi then joins the others in going to the Catacombs and the WLA.

Panzer makes sure to bring Fredo with him on the trip to Karri. He has taught is apprentice physical endurance through their long runs and heavy labor in the village. He has also taught skill at arms and the lad has a talent for not being where the attacks coming at hm are. Now Panzer wants to teach him to know his enemy. Fighters are not the nimblest mental wranglers. When they need to know something about a foe they often rely on their companions. But when you have no companions, or they are as at a loss as you are about a foes strengths and weaknesses, then you have to rely on scholars that have come before you. He will be doing alott of studying while in Karri and he wants to teach Fredo how to research a foe too. He also wants to consult Galen. The elf is old and knows alot about the region. Maybe he has some insight into these dread, or a lead on this coven of dark druids. While on the ship they spar and Panzer keeps the young apprentice trained in weapons.
Panzer does not seek more magical healing. He chooses to wait for the wounds he took in the fight with the dread to heal naturally. Through this he learns how painful being wounded is and to strive not to get hit again.

After the dramatic events near Freedom’s Landing, Karri seems downright normal. The Catacombs are open for business as usual. The WLA representatives are quite interested in any details that you choose to share regarding the battle over the cursed grove. However, she will also take a time out of her day on the day of arrival to visit Hríw-calen Gildin, the head-priestess of the city's Culverwood clergy at Meadow Grove, of whom she thinks as a friend she is still indebted to. Sahabiel will share with her the same information that the party is providing to the WLA about the ongoing situation with the darkening in the Culverwood, to circulate as needed within this more out of the way (from the Culverwood's point of view, despite this being the central capital from the Emerald Kingdom point of view) branch of the priesthood.

Nightingale seeks out the temple of Ffloy to follow up on Oathbound ambitions. Highlight to display spoiler: {The priests of Ffloy inquire into which secret or public group you intend to bind yourself to.}
Berotha goes to town with the other heroes.

The High Priestess relates that your reports are not the only ones reaching her ears, with rumors of grim pockets of deeper darkness emerging and re-submerging within the Wood. At least the worst ones appear to be unstable at this point, rather than marking permanent advancements by your foes. She does not think that the Wood itself has fully woken to the danger. She promises to make some investigations and seek out more information from her hierarchy, and will be happy to share whatever lore she is able to turn up, when available.

Galen has similar news, and elaborates that scouts sent into the Deeper Culverwood are reporting even more difficulty than usual navigating the Wood. Several have not returned at all, which is very unusual, given that they were experienced folk who knew how to avoid trouble and deal with unusual situations. Vulmer Waesberos, the journeyman emissary that some of you have met in the past, has gone out to look for a missing scout party. He is not overdue yet, but if he has not returned in two days, there are rumors that a stronger team might be sent to find him.

If needed, would our heroes be willing to assist?
