Temple of Gargul (DM MikeK) Monday June 19th, 2023 7:35:45 PM
Armalad drops in on the Star Mages. She is escorted upstairs into a room fortified with abundant magical protections. Inside, several people are dissecting samples, casting various detection spells, researching various tomes, and writing down meticulous notes. The wizard is more than welcome to help out. It is obvious from the activity that the Star Mages will be at this for several days.
After a quiet talk, Zanderallen and Stohp decide to head to the Temple of Gargul to petition for the return of Triggan and Jerma. Their fame precedes them, and in no time at all, the duo find themselves in a small, but comfortable room. The priest listens to their tale, but appears confused.
“I understand your request, but we’ve always found adventurers of your level simply cast the requisite spells themselves. What do you need us to do?”
The rest of the Shields try to settle into their “Not Fighting for Their Lives” routine - practice, study, hobbies, some time with Hawky. A little down time is always nice.

Stohp is not magically inclined and has no idea if anyone in the party is capable of casting the spell with only the pieces they have so follows Zanderlarian's lead. Worst case scenario they can try Belkar - he's retired now but certainly powerful enough to cast the spell.

Stock retreats to the rooftop archery range and joins Delia for some target practice using his javelins. Between shots he says to Delia, "You ever get tired of the constant hustle? Always having one more task to save The Float? I can't say I get tired of it but sometime I would like the opportunity to sleep in...just once."
He smiles and takes another throw of a javelin. It's not his best throw as the tip dips down and to the left.

Bartomus took some time with his carving and then when he felt he needed a break, he headed out into the Float with the objective of visiting a few of the arts and crafts vendors where he use to have his own stall before all of the work with the Shields. Bartomus enjoyed browsing the wares, picking up a few things from some of the vendors old and new.
He picked up some great spring rolls from a street vendor and began working his way back to their HQ. All the while, his mind kept playing over parts of what they had seen and fought against down in the deep.

Delia looses another arrow and then pauses, giving Stock a half shrug. "I've been serving the Float for as long as they've let me. I'm honestly not sure what I'd do with myself if it didn't have to do with saving this city. Sometimes I wonder what I'll do once my body can't keep up with the wear and tear of adventurer life. Probably get very grumpy in my boredom and ability to sleep in every day." She returns his smile, hers a little sad, [b]"The not being able to save everyone... that's the part that wears on me. Being an avenger never feels as good as successfully protecting in the first place." She shakes herself a little, smile becoming more genuine, "But maybe Zanderallen and Stohp will have some luck at the temple."

Zanderallen nods in agreement with the priest, "If we had members capable of such magics we would go to them. But we are no longer graced with such divine casters. With the state of their bodies it would require a Resurrection spell to return them. We would cover the material components if your temple is able to provide the casting."
Temple of Gargul (DM MikeK) Tuesday June 20th, 2023 7:59:25 PM
While the majority of The Shields banter and practice some archery at Shieldhouse, Zanderallen and Stohp lay out their case to the priest.
He cocks his head sidewise. "We have the capacity to cast the spell," he answers hesitantly. "But you do realize you're asking people dedicated to getting souls to the right place to ask our diety to bring one back. I need a moment."
The fellow excuses himself and leaves the room.
About fifteen minutes later, he comes back.
"Because you are who you are, we will help", he agrees. "Please return tomorrow just after dawn. We will be ready."

Zander bows to the priest, "I am aware of what we are asking, we feel these souls were snatched too early from the service there were supposed to perform by evil that should never have been." He thanks the priest and says they will return.
As and Stohp leave he turns to his taur companion, "We will need to go tell the Lakeview Lads. For one we will need the remains of Triggan and Jerma to focus the Resurrection spell on. And they were Triggan and Jerma's companions, if anyone has a right to petition Gargul it's the rest of the Lads."

Dual Visits (DM MikeK) Wednesday June 21st, 2023 9:08:23 PM
Zanderallen and Stohp head to the Giggling Ghost, as the “headquarters” for the Lakeview Lads is just a side room at the inn.
Inside are the half orc, Garish, and the dwarf, Duluth. The two look up from their card game as the pair of Shields enter. As recognition cross their faces, both launch themselves to their feet.
“Zanderallen, Stohp, welcome,” Duluth greets them. Both stand, waiting expectantly.
The rest of the Shields are at their HQ. There is a polite rapping at the door, and when opened, the Shieds find Pip, the resident WLA librarian, waiting patiently. The halfling tells his escort, a couple junior members of the WLA by the looks of them, to wait outside. The escort is in too much of fanboy mode on the Shields to raise any objections.
Pip eases inside, a Bag of Holding at his hip. “Momentous events, Master Bartomus,” he greets the taur lightly. “I’ve run across quite the tale. You wouldn’t happen to have a table nearby. And a drink. I could definitely use a drink.” Sense Motive DC 15Highlight to display spoiler: {He’s trying to hide it, but the halfling is worried.}

Pip reports (DM MikeK) Thursday June 22nd, 2023 5:24:17 PM
At Stohp’s prompting, Garish ducks out. Soon, the remaining five Lads are in the room, pretty much stunned as they individually work out what they’ve just been told.
Duluth recovers the quickest. Sorta. “Stand before Gargul?” he asks, dumbfounded. “The actual deity, Gargul?”
“We’ll be there,” Taran declares. Then, more tentatively. “You’ll all be there too, right?”
At Shields HQ, Pip has himself a nice, long mug of mead. He does the reputation of halflings proud, downing the pint in no time at all.
Once finished, he begins his tale, pulling out tomes and flipping to relevant passages as he goes.
“You’ll recall…well, some of you won’t, so I’ll back up. The Shields went to It’lal some time ago and encountered a lich who possessed an extensive library. Master Bartomus asked me to review. From those tomes, we discovered the lich was searching for a creature he named Karkasan. The lich maintains this Karkasan was responsible for the ancient war between the progenitors of the Lizard Fok and the earliest drow of It’lal. It also writes this Karkasan was defeated….”
Pip looks around. “And bound to the Crying Wood.” The halfling flips the books, pointing to pages. “Much like the paladin Florin was bound. But Florin volunteered, to be a protector. It says here Karkasan’s body was entombed in the Heart of the Wood, and his soul bound to the forest…eons ago. Its imprisonment is the reason the Woods is what it is, Karkasan’s evil infesting the awareness of the forest over years and years.”
“There’s more. The lich writes Karkasan can be freed. A certain spell [points] with certain components [points again] cast over the entrapped body in the Heart of the Wood.”
The halfling takes another drink. “All of which could easily be passed off as the ancient ramblings of a clearly demented undead wizard.”
He points again at a symbol in the book. “Except for this.”
Its a drawing of a sigil. An emblem of a single eye centered over an open, tooth filled maw. “The lich calls it the Eye of Karkasan. Nobody I know has ever heard of it, or ever seen it before.”
He looks up. “Until earlier today, when you all pulled up two pairs of magical bracers from the bottom of the lake bearing that exact same sigil.”

Bartomus listened and then he froze...he continued to listen as he started to stand.
"Don't go anywhere, Pip. Refill your tankard, I need to show you something." Bartomus said as he stepped away from the table and quickly, very quickly, walked up to his room taking the steps two at a time.
When he stepped into his room, he looked about. Where was it, where was it? He asked himself and then he saw it. It was a large, old, maybe ancient, well bound portfolio and it was carefully placed between the wall and his working desk to ensure it didn't get warped. He carefully pulled it out and then went down the stairs as quickly as he had climbed them.
"Pip, so would these illustrations be of that war?" Bartomus set the large folio tome down and opened it to a two page illustration of Drows fighting the Lizard folk, but now he wondered if they were something older.
"Kept it from Kurgan's library, or rather laboratory and figured I could study the illustrations." Bartomus explained.

Wrapping up (DM MikeK) Monday June 26th, 2023 12:53:51 PM
Armalad tries to recall previous mentions of Karkasan. She cannot. She then presses Pip on Karkasan’s significance.
Delia pretty much spells out Karkasan’s significance, with Pip nodding along. But, then she gets to wondering how the halfling’s information pertains to the here and now.
Stock thinks he sees a connection, and again Pip nods along. But then he wants to know where Karkasan is entombed.
Pip shrugs. “In the Heart of the Wood, according to the lich anyway. I don’t know where that is.”
Bart brings down an illustrated tome. Pip looks through it, nodding to himself. “Yes, this could be the war between the drow and lizard folk. Notice here? The two sizes of lizard folk? The lich wrote that Karkasan experimented on lizard folk, made them bigger, more aggressive, but also more pliable. You can see them here.”
Based on the relative sizes in the illustrations, it sure looks like the “bigger” lizard folk match the size of the bones the Shields found in the mounds.
The meeting over, Pip leaves with a promise to keep looking.
Stohp and Zanderallen return, fill in the rest of team on the Resurrection plans, and get filled in on Pip’s findings.
The night passes.
The next day dawns, and the Shields have an appointment at the Temple of Gargul…

If possible, Delia would like to acquire a map of the Crying Woods and all the reports of nasty things or occurrences in and around the woods that she can get her hands on.
Her goal is to see if there is any kind of pattern, origin point of corruption, etc or any reports of something that would imply to her a "heart" of the woods.
She will work much harder to be presentable to go to the Temple than she ever has to go before nobility. She sets out a genuinely clean tunic to wear under her armor and scrubs all the dirt off her boots the evening before.

Bartomus nodded and studied the drawings in the tome he had shared.
"Pip, if you think you could study through this and be sure to bring it back, mead upon its return, take this with you for now." Bartomus said as he handed the tome to Pip. "I may be a bit busy to study it as intently as you can and if it gives us some insight, well that would be helpful. We could even ask one of the Drow for additional information. May need allies here."
After they all got caught up, Bartomus added that they may need to reach out to both the lizard folk and the drow. He mentioned waking through trees as a way to travel there and back if need, but thought some of the merchants from both groups might be an option as well.
Bartomus headed back up the stairs and continued to work on his carvings trying to get one completed. The time flew and he paused to eat. Then he called it a night.
Next morning, he got himself up and headed out for his morning meditations. He made sure to focus on things underwater and how to ensure his fellow Shields could breathe underwater. Then he got back into the HQ in time to get properly cleaned up and dressed in his court attire. He figured he should look his best to be at any temple. He grabbed his glave, tucked in his sling with its bullets into a pouch, and rounded it out with a handful of gold coins in case they needed to buy something. Then he waited by the door to follow the other Shields to their visit to the temple.

He completes his exercise and prayers on the roof, eats a good breakfast, and then prepares his gear. He covers the holy symbols on his armor with a black band of mourning, hoping to soon be able to remove it. Side note - you wouldn't believe how many eggs you need to buy to feed a moderate sized adventuring party.
Now - do you think I should wear my armor or that fancy courtier outfit that the Drow gave me?"
Gargul (DM MikeK) Tuesday June 27th, 2023 1:26:13 PM
The Shields rise to find Stock has cooked up breakfast. After some inquiries about what to wear, the general consensus seems to be ‘clean’.
After another helping of eggs or two, the group is off. They arrive at the temple of Gargul to find the Lads already there. Taran spots the Shields first and points them out to the rest of the Lads. A palpable wave of relief passes over each of the five Lads as the quickly run up to the Shields. “Thank Alemi. You’re here,” Duluth gushes. “We didn’t know how early to come..” “We’ve been here for two hours,” Xera interrupts, while shooting the dwarf a dirty look. Duluth waves it off. “Better safe than sorry.” That elicits a general groaning and rolling of the eyes. Apparently, not the first time he’s uttered that phrase.
With the Lads in tow, the Shields enter the temple, where they are met by a nervous looking priest. As they make their way to a side temple, the man leans in to speak lowly into Zanderallen’s ear. “This is highly irregular, you know. Clerics of Gargul asking their lord to return a soul? If you all weren’t, well you, I doubt we’d be doing this.
Nevertheless, Shields and Lads and two clerics of Gargul and the remains of Jerma and Triggan (mercifully covered with a thick blanket) congregate in a large room.
“Prepare yourselves,” the priest intones. “And I’d advise being on your best behavior.”
He begins the spell.
The room fades out.
The Shields find themselves on a wide but shallow deck jutting out into a small pond. Glades and woods border the forest. A small dirt trail leads back from the deck to a small wooden cabin, where a tendril of smoke lazily rises from the lone chimney. It feels like early morning, just after dawn. A mist rises above the pond. Crickets chirp and birds call.
Reclining in a wooden Adirondack chair is a handsome older gentleman. He has a fishing pole in left hand, which flicks the pole occasionally. In his right is a champagne glass filled with an orange bubbly liquid.
The Shields notice that besides the man, there are just themselves and the spellcasting priest.
The priest takes about two seconds to size up the scene, then pretty much collapses into a prostrate position facing the gentleman.
He casts out the line and, still facing out at the pond, sighs, and speaks in pleasant baritone.
“The Silver Shields. Of course. Gerand, I’m thinking you might be overfond of this group.”
The priest flattens out even further. He’s practically lying on the deck, but says nothing.
Gargul glances over at the Shields, and sighs again. Well, you’re here. No point arguing about it. Good morning, Silver Shields. Mimosa?”
A tray holding several more champagne flutes appears and hovers before the group.

Bartomus looked about the change in the room and realized they were in that "other" space. A space different, but similar to where he had first met Eberyon as a young bullish Taur. He took it all in and then when the person was there reclining in the wooden outdoor chair, he realized that things had changed indeed. He kept his head bowed slightly out of respect but made a point of keeping the scene under observation.
The priest had prostrated himself well on the wooden deck boards. When the older-looking man-god spoke, the priest seemed driven to make himself part of the very grain of the wood. Bartomus kept himself calm as Gargul spoke about them.
He bowed his head in acknowledgment to the greeting. Then when offered a drink, he smiled.
"That is very kind of you, yes thank you." Bartomus responded and reached for one of the proffered floating champagne flutes. He held the flute aloft and again bowed his head in respect to Gargul. He would only drink from the flute once the rest of the Shields had accepted the man-god's hospitality.

Zanderallen greets the lad and heads into the temple with a somber face. As the priest finishes his ritual it takes him but a moment to recognize the presence of Gargul. He drops to a kneel and fist clasped to heart bows in deepest respect. Standing up at the offer of drinks he takes one and has a sip to steady himself. He speaks calmly and frankly, making no attempt to charm a diety, "Lord Gargul, we deeply apologize for disturbing you, and I recognize what we are doing is a little unorthodox. But we've come to petition for the lives of Jerma and Triggan. They and their friends were inspired to follow our footsteps. They were cut down by an evil that by all rights should never have been there, an evil we should have stopped. If you would consider returning them, we feel they have much left to give." Zander has to take a couple pauses as he finishes his statement to keep his voice steady. He finishes and gives Gargul a quick sad look before lowering his head.

Armalad accepts the Mimosa of the God. She was told to be on her best behaviour and it is rude to turn down refreshment offered.
She adds, "They were part of an adventuring party, a fledgling one, but adventurers nonetheless. I know it is usually the group that the dead were a part of that petitions you on their behalf but as I said they were just starting out and such magics are beyond them. We are trying to do what we can to right this wrong from our end by putting an end to the threat and whoever is behind it once and for all but Jerma and Triggan and their party have much potential and much they could contribute to The Float and The Wold as a whole if allowed to reach it. Please grant our petition."
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Wednesday June 28th, 2023 8:00:24 AM
Stohp gives a respectful bow to the god, but does not accept a drink. She just ate and it's a bit early for her to be drinking alcohol. She adds a bit of context to the request. "Though it was their choice to become adventurers we feel responsible for what happened, as I was specifically searching out others to assist us in dealing with threats to our home.
Stock (JonM) HP: 174/203; AC: 28/25/16; Per: +25; Surv: +13; SM: +14 Wednesday June 28th, 2023 11:23:44 AM
Stock keeps an eye on Zanderallen and follows the paladin's actions. "These young adventurers paid the ultimate sacrifice trying to help the fishing community of the Float. They were caught in the evil plan of some power we do not yet fully understand of a level of power well above their own. And while we have not yet confirmed the source of evil, we believe it to be tied to a creature known as Karkasan and tied to a lich we battled previously. I would wager neither of these are friends of your domain..."
Gargul continues (DM MikeK) Wednesday June 28th, 2023 3:23:41 PM
Gargul occasionally casts his line as The Shields make their plea. Only Stock elicits a visible reaction, a slight turn of the head with a distasteful expression at the mention of “lich”.
He turns back to the pond. “Jerma and Triggan are hardly the first to die emulating The Silver Shields. Nor will they be the last. One of the costs of fame, it turns out.
As for potential, in three years a prince will be born to the rulers of Plateau City. The right soul, with some training and luck, could lead the continent to a golden age. I had Triggan in mind for the role.”
He turns to the group.
“Death isn’t the end. Nor is birth the beginning. Existence continues in the Lands of the Rest. And most of the souls are quite happy to be there.
If all of this is about assuaging your guilt, you have nothing to be guilty about. People make their own choices. If this is about potential, the potential remains. Opportunities to give to the Wold renew themselves, in time.”
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Wednesday June 28th, 2023 4:19:55 PM
Stohp bows again at Gargul's words and thinks for several moments about the proper response. "With all due respect lord, it is about fairness. As adventurers we risk much, but in exchange the Silver Shields have been greatly blessed. Twice one of our number has fallen, twice we have been granted an audience with you. That alone is a rare and wonderful blessing beyond the ken of most mortals and more then I could have ever asked. That we were also blessed by the return of our companions when it was determined they still had tasks to complete in the land of the living is a blessing almost beyond comprehension, and one I will be eternally grateful for.
So, having been given such great blessings, it is our duty to pass those blessings on and to see that the good we do outlives us. Thus we searched for people to sponsor and assist as they sought to do good in the Wold as we have, and now that some of them have fallen it felt only right we offer them the chance to petition you on their own behalf and on behalf of their companions, the same great blessing we have been given in the past. No more, and no less."
As Stohp finishes it suddenly occurs to her intentions might have been totally misunderstood. Having barely known the Lads she had always intended merely to give them the chance to petition Gargul as the Shields had in the past. She'd only told the shields because they'd be invested in the outcome just like herself. She had assumed the lads hadn't spoken up before now due to hero worship and fear of the god making them to nervous to say anything. Now though she turns about to look for them and motion them forward, hoping and praying that the priest included them in the spell. If they have not been she will be very cross and kicking herself internally for the next week.
If they have been included she will give a small sigh of relief and motion them to come forward and present their own petition while motioning the other Shields back. This is not about them. It's about the next generation.

Zanderallen splutters at Gargul's mention of the potential plan for Triggan. Zanderallen's face goes through a series of conflicting emotions that he doesn't even attempt to hide, confusion, doubt, anger, sadness, guilt, shame, and finally acceptance. He answers Gargul slowly, "You have my thanks Lord Gargul, and my apology. I got caught up in my own perceptions of death, and instead of reacting with anger you have taught me something. Death is but a door..." He smiles faintly as finishes with a paraphrases of Gargul's from his religious studies with new understanding.

Delia (Hannah) HP: 115/115; AC 29/17/23; CMD 40 Thursday June 29th, 2023 12:22:22 AM
Delia speaks very softly, eyes on the ground, "Death and loss are part of life. She ends with a respectful nod and helps Stohp usher the Lads forward.

"All things to all times and who are we to shift the wheels that are in motion, unless there is an opportunity provided here what with a litch already involved and someone recreating old legendary creatures once lost to time. If the two lads are at peace with where they are at, so be it. But, how best then can we ensure that their sacrifices are not to be lost in the passing of time? What unrest might be created amongst the Wold with such things on the loose?"
Bartomus went silent and took a slow, long sip from the flute as he continued his thoughts in his own mind rather than aloud.
The bargain (DM MikeK) Thursday June 29th, 2023 1:16:29 PM ”Oh, I am talking with your wards,” Gargul answers Stohp. ”I have chosen to conduct the interviews separately.”
The other Shields comment. Gargul nods along, until Stock speaks up. He scoffs and rolls his eyes. ”You can’t possibly believe I’m not aware of your relative power levels. (sigh) You were all doing so well, too.”
Gargul casts another line. Some time passes. Some more time passes.
After a while he turns back to the group, a stern expression taking over his features. “I have two conditions for you, Silver Shields.
One. We will not do this again. Raising Silver Shields may be necessary, but this is the one and only time you ask for a soul outside of the six of you.
Two. You, collectively, owe me a favor. When I come to collect, you will do as I ask without reservation.
I will promise only that the task will not be diametrically opposed to your core beliefs.”

Bartomus listened and took surprise at the fact that interviews were going on elsewhere at the same time, but then he realized he was in fact talking to a god of the Wold. A nice fishman of a diety, but still a diety.
The fact that a diety said the Shields were doing well, well that was a nice moment. Bartomus started to smile and then nodded at the other Shields with a "isn't that pretty cool" look in the silence that followed. He took the last sip from the flute and then the tone changed. He would never be certain, but he felt that there was a coldness, grayness like granite or marble on a winter day that met his gaze when he looked up at Gargul stating his two conditions.
Bartomus nodded with the first one, and then he caught himself with the second. But, they had come this far and this is what the outcome of doing just that produced. He felt that they were committed. He looked at the other Shields and shrugged with a look of "I guess we are doing this."
Delia (Hannah) HP: 115/115; AC 29/17/23; CMD 40 Thursday June 29th, 2023 4:29:28 PM
Delia looked at the other Shields apprehensively as Gargul stated his conditions. While he was an orderly god, the god of Life and Death was an intimidating being to owe a favor to. He seemed to promise that it would not be an evil task, but that still left a wide range that wouldn't fall under "diametrically opposed" for him to ask of them.
But like Bart, she knew that this was the path they had committed to. And it seemed a fair price to pay for the lives of Triggan and Jerma. The fact that they had died could never be undone and they would always bear those scars, but she hoped that this second chance would be a chance at healing for all of the Lads.

Stohp has said her piece and doesn't mind owing the god a favor. I mean, favor or no favor, should Gargul make a request of the Shields there was never any chance they'd tell him no. So she bows in acceptance, thanks the god for his time, and is ready to go.

Zanderallen considers diving on top of Stock and stopping the dwarf's insolence but from his kneeling position he'd never get there in time. Instead he keeps his head down and prepares for the damage. He winces at Gargul's tone and nods in acceptance. "Understood loud and clear Lord Gargul." He doesn't particularly enjoy owing a favor to another deity, but Gargul and Domi saw eye to eye on many things so it was what it was. He bows deeply as they are dismissed.

Delia is increasingly uncomfortable the longer they spend in Lord Gargul's presence. She can almost feel the power radiating off of him, despite his more innocuous appearance in this encounter. She bites her tongue to hold onto some bit of dignity and not to beg her friends to just agree on something so that they can leave.
Bargain made (DM MikeK) Tuesday July 4th, 2023 7:59:36 PM
Armalad acquiesces.
Gargul nods. ”So be it.”
The Shields are back in the side room at the Temple of Gargul. There was no flash, no warning, no nothing. Just a complete change of scene in an instant.
The Lakeview Lads are also present, all of them. But they look different. Most noticeably, Triggan and Grysh are both displaying the Eye of Gargul prominently on the breastplates of their armor. But even the rest…there is a more seasoned look to all of them. And their equipment is better - not yet nearly in the class of the Shields, but still a fair sight better than a few minutes ago.
Duluth looks to Zanderallen. “How long? How long have we been gone?”
“Thirty seconds,” answers the priest, Garand. He’s changed as well. He’s tired and thinner. He gives the Shields a quick nod, and leaves the room.
At his answer, shocked looks pass over the faces of the Lads. “Seconds??” Taran whispers.
Other acolytes arrive to escort the group from the Temple. Jerma leads the Lads as a group up to the Shields. “Thank you. I believe we owe you a drink. To the Ghost?”

Zanderallen stirs from his deep thoughts, lost in memories of his time before Gargul. As they are snapped back to reality he first notices the worn appearance of Garand. He wants to apologize but stops himself. The priests wear was largely his fault for meddling and he must carry that burden. As Duluth speaks his attention focuses on the Lads and his face lights up in smile at seeing Triggan and Jerma. However his intuition starts screaming at him as it notices the changes faster than his conscience perception. He nods to Jerma, "I think a drink is in order, it seems there may be much to discuss"
Lakeview Lads (DM MikeK) Wednesday July 5th, 2023 6:24:44 PM
The Shields and The Lads head down to the Giggling Ghost, pull up a table, and let food and drink flow.
Stock notes Triggan and Grysh have been marked by Gargul. Both nod and grin. “Oh, we know,” Triggan answers.
The Lads have quite a story. What was seconds for an observer, and a dozen or so minutes for the Shields was a three month adventure for the Lads.
The take turns telling the tale - how Gargul demanded the group clean out a haunted monastery in return for Triggan and Jerma; their battles with skeletons, zombies, and finally a weird kind of ghoul; treasures won; last second escapes; all the trappings of a grand adventure.
“Grysh and I follow Gargul now,” Triggan declares with pride. “I am going to become a Grim.”
It should not be lost on the Shields that the Lads have emerged from all this a well-forged, close knit team. They are now capable enough to handle standard Lakeview Passage issues, experienced enough to tread into the unknown with caution, and knowledgeable enough to know when they’re outclassed.
The night eventually winds down, and people start making their way back to wherever they want to go.

I had my own inspirations and reasons - or "destiny" if you want to call it that - to start fighting and I just never stopped. It's not like we're plucking people out of their lives and tossing them into danger. We're walking a path and some people will decide, with or without us, to walk a similar one."
Interlude (DM MikeK) Thursday July 6th, 2023 8:48:30 PM
The party breaks up.
The Shields appreciate the hardening of the Lads.
Some, such as Armalad, wonder about the next round of starstruck imitators. Others, like Delia and Stock, are philosophical.
The Shields retire to their HQ. The night passes without incident or even, mercifully, knocks on the door.
A new day dawns, and it looks like everyone is free to pursue whichever leads take their fancy.
Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27 Thursday July 6th, 2023 10:27:42 PM
Armalad persists the conversation, "Yes some people choose to do this on their own accord and whether they understand the risks or not, they exist and there can be consequences but we just chose to intercede in the destinies of this other group and Lord Gargul made us aware that this is a one-time thing. However, we technically made ourselves responsible for the next group that comes along because what we did here and there won't be a God waiting to undo whatever horrible fate happened to them. Frankly I don't want that kind of responsibility."

Stohp finally gives Armalad her own answer. "We have accepted no such responsibility. What you seem to be forgetting was that when we met the Lads I was actively recruiting help. I was searching out adventurers and experienced guards to hire to help us manage things around the float and have eyes on our HQ when we're out. Hearing of the lads we then approached them to sponsor and hire them. Now true we learned that those sponsoring us had already taken steps to support the Lads and we didn't end up doing much other then providing encouragement, but the point remains that we made ourselves responsible for them not because they were random smucks emulating us, but because we were actively searching for and recruiting help. We now have that help and are not responsible for the actions of anyone else who tries to go fight giant monsters on their own."
So having spoken of her efforts to get some hired help around the place Stohp is reminded that she never actually finished doing that. Sure they found the lads, but they still lack domestic staff like they had in the past and she had been intending on hiring more. With how busy everyone is with research of this latest problem it would be nice if they had some people who could keep things tidy so the group could focus on the task at hand. She'll use her local knowledge to know where to go to look to find reliable, trustworthy staff (knowledge local 35)

Bartomus had spent the time at the Ghost enjoying the stories shared by the new adventurers and the mead. He listened and then lost himself in his thoughts and the stories captured in the tapestries that hung about the walls. He continued his silent contemplations as the party. He said his goodnights and laid himself down on his bed.
When he awoke, he slung on his clothes, undertook his daily meditations and then walked back into their headquarters. Stock had mentioned a visit to the League of Adventurers and he wanted to head up there as well. He felt there was a need for some additional training, talking, and learning as a result of their underwater adventure.
"Stock, I'll head up with you to the League," Bartomus offered and made a mental note that he needed to also visit the catacombs to look at some improvements to his gear. Plus, there were potions to reacquire.

Stock makes his way to the WLA for a training session. Bart goes with him. Waiting for them at the door is a heavyset fellow wearing Catacombs livery and carrying a box. “Delivery for Stock,” he declares, handing over the box.
Inside the pair are received by a wide eyed attendant. “Hi - I'm Stock. I need to pay my dues. Also I'm due for some training. Is anybody around that can help with that?" The fellow nods a couple times and points down the hall. Behind another door are two dwarves who put Stock through the paces.
Delia swings by the Catacombs and comes back with some new goodies. [Delia purchase approved!]
Zanderallen makes the rounds - Catacombs, WLA, Pepper - before working his way back to his friends. "Do we have any leads regarding the blood lilies? If we can find something I'd rather not wait around until somebody gets attacked again."
No leads. But everyone was busy with Gargul and the Lads, so perhaps some are available. The Shields reached out to several groups earlier, The Star Mages, the druids of the Circle of Alder, that librarian at the WLA, and the Overlord himself.
Seems like a good time for some follow up.
Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27 Tuesday July 11th, 2023 1:47:01 AM
Armalad heads back to the Star Mages to see if the members of her order figured anything out.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Tuesday July 11th, 2023 7:04:53 AM
Stohp finishes up at the Ghost and joins one of the others to check on possible answers. With Stock already at the WLA and the Star Mages being secretive she'll probably join whomever goes to the druids.
Bartomus(Rod) HP: 123/123 AC 21; Glv +16 2d8+2 Slng +14 CMD 11 Melee 12/7/2;Perc+16;Heal+11 Tuesday July 11th, 2023 10:21:24 AM
Bartomus smiled at the WLA staff at the front desk and waited for them to get Stock's status updated. When his favorite, most of the time, dwarf headed off to the training rooms, Bartomus stepped up and introduced himself.
"Good morning, Bartomus with the Silver Shields, and a member here," he said while adding a smile and a shrug. He fished out a purse filled with the necessary payment for his updated membership and set it down before the staffer. "Here's what I need to pay dues-wise. Also, still thinking about the training that would make the most sense. I feel that learning a few different languages might be of help. Especially something to talk with the merfolk. Come to think of it, maybe something that works with the lizardfolk. But, I also, need to check in with the library staff to see if they have found out anything more. So, yea, the library and then the classroom I guess?"
Bartomus stopped talking and waited to follow as directed where the attendant sent him.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 168/168 AC: 32 T: 13 FF: 31 CMD: 33 LoH 14/14 SE 6/6 Tuesday July 11th, 2023 2:06:42 PM
With the other leads being followed up on Zanderallen will make the trek up to the Palace level. He greets the guards and attendants he's starting to become familiar with and ask that his name be sent in to the Overlord. He would like to know if there has been any updates on the business in the Lake. He is willing to wait or come back later, whenever the Overlord is free.
Stock (JonM) HP: 238/238; AC: 29/26/16; Per: +27; Surv: +14; SM: +16 Tuesday July 11th, 2023 6:28:55 PM
Stock takes his training like a good dwarf and dishes out a good deal more to the two dwarves trying to train him. "And so that is what a good bodyguard does....good to know! Still though maybe I'll just focus on smashing face most of the time."
Gathering the news (DM MikeK) Tuesday July 11th, 2023 8:10:38 PM
Armalad heads back up to the Star Mages to see if they’ve figured anything out.
She finds they are quite excited about the plant creature. Someone, or more likely a group of someones, has managed to combine nature based divine magic, necromancy, enchantment, and knowledge of golem craftsmanship to draw the spirit out of a living subject and embed it into a formed plant golem.
“The result is quite a formidable creature”, the academic gushes,
At the WLA, Bartomus introduces himself, evoking a smile of recognition from the attendant. “Languages are next to the library,” he tells the taur. At the library, Pip greets him warmly. “This is all fascinating reading,” he notes. “Though somewhat troubling.” “I’ve cross referenced, and this Karkasan creature seems to have really existed, was more or less responsible for the Drow - Lizard Folk War, and was imprisoned within the Crying Woods. Though your friends were right in that this is all very ancient history. There’s been no mention of Karkasan in any other of our materials. It’s very likely I was over excited about the find.”
Pip does note the writings say Karkasan can be freed by use of three powerful spell components: Item - Sarr’s Armor Item - Largon’s Dragon Crown. Item - Scepter of the Dead
Following his visit with Pip, Bart proceeds to the classroom where he finds the two elves there fluent in just about anything he can think of.
Nobody seems headed to the druids quite yet. Stohp lingers around the WLA.
Zanderallen goes to visit the Overlord. He finds himself immediately invited into an antechamber and in conference with the man in no time at all. “The merfolk have a name,” Drezz informs him after a very short preamble. “Norella Eksen. Some kind of elf druid that somehow made herself amphibious and hung out with the merfolk for several years. Merfolk say the strangle vines and blood lilies are just her style. They also say she’s crazy. They banished her from their lands after one of her experiments ate a couple kids.
They’re looking for her now, and we’ve got people scrying where we can. It’s a big lake, but if its her, and she’s down there, something should turn up sooner or later.”
Stock gets all trained up.

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Wednesday July 12th, 2023 5:55:36 AM
Well if no one else was already heading to see the druids then Stohp will just go ahead and go. It's not like she's doing anything useful just hanging around.
Stock (JonM) HP: 238/238; AC: 29/26/16; Per: +27; Surv: +14; SM: +16 Wednesday July 12th, 2023 9:17:24 AM
Stock departs the League and checks with Bart if he's done yet and has any desire to visit the Druids. Either way, he heads to the Grove, bumping into Stohp on the way.
Bartomus(Rod) HP: 123/123 AC 21; Glv +16 2d8+2 Slng +14 CMD 11 Melee 12/7/2;Perc+16;Heal+11 Wednesday July 12th, 2023 11:05:45 AM
Bartomus entered the library and was glad to see Pip. He listened to what Pip had found and became more focused on what was being shared. He felt that the Shields would be needing to have a bit more of a conversation with the Drow and the Lizard Folk to learn about this Karkasan. Also to learn about what the three items were that Pip had discovered were required to release this terror from the Crying Woods.
"Pip, this is all vital information," Bartomus said with deep sincerity. "I will share all of this with the Shields of course. I do wonder if we need to also ask more about the story of Karkasan of our Drow and Lizard Folk allies. Your work has given us a few vital clues and those could be essential to our next step in dealing with what may be a significant threat to the Float and the communities of the lake."
Bartomus thanked Pip and shook the librarian's hand. "Appreciate all of the help Pip. Please, if you discover anything else, or have any other ideas, you are always welcome at Shield headquarters."
Bartomus then left the library and stepped into the classroom and introduced himself to the two elves that were there. "I am hoping you both could help me learn how to speak the lizard folk, especially if there is any connection to those associated with dragons. Also, want to be able to talk with the merfolk in the Lake. I feel both may become very useful in the future."
Bartomus followed their lead and committed himself to their instructions.
Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41 Wednesday July 12th, 2023 12:28:55 PM (OOC sorry - Sunday was crazy and I lost track of posting Mon/Tu)
Delia, having to relearn some techniques with the newly increased strength rating of her bow, vanished onto the roof of Shield HQ to practice. She misses the flurry of drawing in thrown out leads, absorbed in the rhythm of firing.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Thursday July 13th, 2023 12:37:07 AM
On the way to the Druid's grove Stohp stops to place an order for some helpful items for their continued underwater adventures.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 168/168 AC: 32 T: 13 FF: 31 CMD: 33 LoH 14/14 SE 6/6 Thursday July 13th, 2023 4:02:41 PM
Zanderallen unconsciously starts adjusted and tightening straps and pieces of gear as he hears the news from Overlord Drezz, "Norella Eksen. Crazy druid banished into the depths of the lake sounds like just the sort of person we need to "talk" to. I'll go inform the others and see if we have any means of helping in the search. But as soon as anyone has a lead, send it our way. We're prepped and ready to go back in the Lake. Thank you."
Zander will join up with the rest of the Shields and share the update. "We're likely going back underwater for an extended period again soon, be ready."
"But... I don't want to eat all my seaweed!" (DM Wayne) Thursday July 13th, 2023 10:48:48 PM
Armalad waits impatiently as the academic ponders her question… After a moment or three of nose-scratching and deep thought, the academic says, “This creature is so novel… if one person split their studies… no, no one could achieve full arcane and primal mastery… it could be a team… or perhaps one very powerful spellcaster of one tradition and a nearly as powerful spellcaster of the other tradition… we arcane specialists don’t normally mix the magical streams, you see… though there are mystic theurges… I’ll have assistants do further research, but… the underwater connection complicates things because underwater societies tend to have few written records since, without fire, they can only engrave on stones and other items of convenience… tell you what Armalad, once my assistants have scoured our library I’ll send a messenger with our findings to Shields Headquarters. Deal?
Also, perhaps if you could arrange a meeting between some merfolk spellcasters and a few of us we might sort something out…”
Stohp resolves to go to the Druids’ Grove while waiting for the others to finish their research at other locations, but first stops by the Catacombs to place an order.
Stock catches up with Stohp on the way to the Druids’ Grove.
Bartomus listens to Pip’s lengthy report, taking occasional notes to report back to the Shields later. Then he busies himself learning Aquan (merfolk, and water elementals…) and Draconic (lizardfolk, and kobolds…) from the two elves, helped along by his lengthy time hearing Armalad use Aquan to speak to the merfolk and Draconic to cast many, if not all, of her Arcane spells. Come to think of it, Stohp has occasionally demonstrated fluency in many languages as well… all the better for his crash course in these two rather unusual languages!
(OOC – my real-life degree is in linguistics, and my brain explodes at the thought of learning two languages in one, or even two, day(s), but… Pathfinder!)
Delia’s muscles sing with the long memories of an arrow nocked and bowstring drawn, and really have to work for the first time in a long time as her new bow’s draw weight is… not for the faint of heart!
Zanderallen’s hands have minds of their own, readying his armor and gear for battle though no threat presents itself. Some of the guards stand more at attention, but all know in the deepest parts of their beings that Zanderallen, Champion of Domi, bears no malice to the Overlord. Zanderallen recaps what Drezz just said, says his thanks, and Abele and Zejd help him whisk out of the Overlord’s demesne and back into the Float proper.
He heads for Shields HQ, but finds only Delia, practicing with her new bow. Zanderallen shrugs and informs her of the need for another underwater expedition.
Stohp and Stock arrive at the Druids’ Grove, and are met by an unfamiliar face: a lion-woman, apparently tending to the trees, turns at Stock’s noisy approach and then rises to her full height. She strides lightly until she is standing before the Shields. “Hail and well-met Shields! Stohp and Stock, yes? How may we of the Grove be of assistance?”
Stohp and Stock notice that the lion-woman appears to have correctly identified each of them, unlike some other denizens of the Float…
Shields – what do you do next?
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Friday July 14th, 2023 1:46:11 AM "I believe one of my companions came by here the other with some questions about dangers we faced in the depths of the lake. I thought I'd come by and find out if anything has been learned?"
Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27 Friday July 14th, 2023 3:00:15 AM
Armalad says, "Let me know what you find out. I'll get to working on a meeting of the minds of the merfolk and us."
Armalad returns home and tells the others what she learned she also says, "Do we have a way to get a message to the merfolk without boarding a giant turtle and having the princess show up with all that pomp and circumstance? The Star Mages have requested a meeting with some mer-mages and I figure the princess could probably arrange it."
Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41 Friday July 14th, 2023 3:01:59 PM
Delia starts a little bit when Zander approaches, her shot going wide, not hearing him coming for the first time in her life. "Oh boy. Well... it's not like we weren't expecting to have to go back down. This druid sounds like a piece of work."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 168/168 AC: 32 T: 13 FF: 31 CMD: 33 LoH 14/14 SE 6/6 Friday July 14th, 2023 5:05:04 PM
Upon finding Delia on the roof Zander unpacks and strings his own bow from his bag of holding and takes his stance in the firing lane next to Delia. He chats with her as he joins in the practice. His stance is balanced, but does not come easily. The work of a warrior who has dedicated his life to martial practice but not the way of the bow. "What is it about dangerous plants that draws the mad scientist? If people would just leave well enough alone. But at least we have a lead, something tangible we can chase down."
Bartomus(Rod) HP: 123/123 AC 21; Glv +16 2d8+2 Slng +14 CMD 11 Melee 12/7/2;Perc+16;Heal+11 Friday July 14th, 2023 9:28:31 PM
When his head was hurting from all he had absorbed, Bartomus thanked his instructors for their focus, be it magic or otherwise, in instructors him.
He made his way back to the hq and shared with those there what Pip had shared. He also shared his idea of approaching the lizard folk and drow delegates to learn even folk tales about the origins of that ancient war.
"But... I don't want to eat all my seaweed!" (DM Wayne) Friday July 14th, 2023 11:14:30 PM
Stohp replies to the lion-woman with the purpose of their visit.
Armalad askes the academic to keep her informed, and promises to work on a Float/Merfolk meeting. She then returns to Shields HQ where she finds Delia and Zanderallen and relays to them what she’s learned, also asking how to contact the Merfolk without the princess having her whole entourage.
Delia looses an arrow a bit too early when Zanderallen is suddenly there, updating her on his meeting with Drezz. She appropriately furrows her brow at the news of the druid and more underwater exploring.
Zanderallen retrieves his own bow and joins Delia in practice. He wonders aloud why the druid has the obsession with dangerous plants…
Bartomus eventually finished cramming two languages into his size Large skull (maybe that helped?), thanked his instructors each in turn, and then made his way back to Shields HQ, arriving shortly after Armalad finishes speaking. Bartomus relays what he learned from Pip about Karkasan, and offers his ideas on reaching out to the lizardfolk and the drow to see what knowledge and legends they have about any of this.
Stock listens quietly, letting Stohp and the lion-woman do all the greeting/introduction/time-wasting/polite stuff.
The lion-woman listens closely to Stohp. When Stohp finishes, the lion-woman says, “Ohhh… you mean when Master Bartomus came by recently. I wasn’t able to help him then because Cathbad, Carlo, and Jella had tree-traveled to the mainland searching for clues on Jella’s father, but they have recently returned, so I will go and notify them, and one or more of them should greet you shortly… shortly as trees measure it…” she finishes with a giggle. “Please enjoy some fruit while you wait. I shouldn’t be too long.”
Shields – what do you do next?
Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27 Sunday July 16th, 2023 9:45:15 PM

"We can ask Eberyon to send us a messenger. It's an expense worth taking, but if we do, we need to have the mages come up with a way to talk to them. It actually needs to be a high priority."
He looked up the stairs and thought of going to go get the gems that would be needed, then looked back at his fellow Shields.
"It would be a good way to utilize my new skills too." He repeated it in Aquan and smiled.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Monday July 17th, 2023 7:58:55 AM
Stohp waits patiently and does in fact enjoy some fresh fruit.
Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41 Monday July 17th, 2023 12:35:06 PM
Delia offers Zander very insightful, but rather tactless corrections on various bits of stance and timing. She knows his primary skills lie elsewhere, but can't quite help herself from being helpful (or trying to be).
"If you get your jollies out of murder and experimenting, I'd rather someone mutate plants than make a flesh golem or something. Neither is great, but plants are pretty cool and it seems less insane to turn them into murder monsters than humanoids." She pauses firing for a moment and looks at Zander seriously, feeling the need to clarify, "Either way, murder is bad though."
Stock (JonM) HP: 238/238; AC: 29/26/16; Per: +27; Surv: +14; SM: +16 Monday July 17th, 2023 12:57:21 PM
Stock contemplates the finer points of a perfect strawberry he finds. He says to Stohp, "You know I'm still not used to being recognized by total strangers. I know the fame comes along with the job but it sure feels like we're a long way from the Temple of the Hands of Love."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 168/168 AC: 32 T: 13 FF: 31 CMD: 33 LoH 14/14 SE 6/6 Monday July 17th, 2023 2:58:38 PM
Zanderallen accepts Delia's advice as it is meant, caring not for her delivery method. He smiles as she feels the need to clarify her statements, "Hm, I guess the murdering only happening after the creation of the monstrosity is better than the murdering happening both before and after the creation. But why? I still want to know how there are still blood lilies around. I've seen firsthand the blight those abominations cause. If this druid is working with them, she needs to be stopped. The Wold bleed last time those things ran free."
