Asimov (18/13/16; 81 HP; CMD 20) and Irony (27/13/24; 48/48 HP; CMD 20; Hardness 5) -- Hugh  d20+4=18 ;
Thursday June 29th, 2023 11:14:06 PM

Asimov says, "Irony, help Bill escape the vines."

Irony flies to where Bill is entangled and tries to help the bird free itself. (Strength Check: 18)

Bill's save vs entangle ... a 25, so not entangled.

The eagle has a CMD of only 18 and loses 13 of his 58 hp, bringing him down to 45.

Bill lashes out and attacks.

If he can make only one attack, it hits AC27 for 3 damage.

If he gets a full attack, he also hits AC30, a crit threat that confirms vs AC23 for 5 or 10 damage if confirmed. Third attack is a nat 1.

Zeoll races forward, hoping to come to Bill's aid, but also looking for the villain.

Run with Woodland Stride gets Zeoll up to 160 ft closer. How far away is Bill? Zeoll also keeps a sharp eye out ... Perception 20

Asimov tells Irony to help and the horse tries to pull vines off the bird.
Zeoll rushes forward to help his companion. Said companion attacks the enemy.
Cyrion rushes forward.

The vine tightens around Bill, crushing him slowly. He remains grappled.

Irony is not able to free Bill, though the horse is able to keep itself free from the entangling vines. Several lash out at the horse but cannot find a good purchase on its metal hide.

The rest of the party closes in on the scene and are now close enough to act.

Cyrion wants to figure out what is attacking Bill.
Elron goes a whappin.
Asimov has Irony again try to free Bill (Bill saved vs the entanglement, so it would be a grapple check not a strength check and the enemy CMD is 19)
Mundhildur throws rocks.

The party did find documentation warning of assassin vines so it quickly becomes obvious what is happening when they see Bill surrounded by nearly half a dozen writhing, aggressive vines. Between them they smash, crush, and tear the vine grappling the bird to pieces, freeing Bill.

The remaining vines object to their prey being taken from them. They lash out at Bill, who avoids most of them but one manages to grab the bird right before he’d be home free. 15 damage and a nat 1 on the grapple check, so Bill is not regrabbed.

Mundhildur decides to drink a vial of antitoxin. She knows that at least one of those blue faces needled her into forgetfulness. The antitoxin might help defend her somewhat against a repeat of such an experience. Then, she starts 'bowling' - taking stones, and rolling them swiftly along the grasses and through any brambles along the forest floor, hoping to take out or spook the fellow. She does this in 5-degree increments.

I rolled unadjusted d20s, 36 of them. That should cover a full sweep in front of and to her sides. Of course, she avoids tossing them right where her friends are.
To Hit: (number of times a particular 'to hit' matches the number rolled)
20: 3 - Thus, Roll 20 (+14) occurred 3 times.
19: 4
18: 2
17: 1
16: 2
15: 3

12: 4
11: 1
9: 3
8: 1
7: 2
6: 1
5: 1
4: 3
That's 11 rolls below 10
23 rolls above 10

At 9th level she can throw rocks up to 450 feet. However, as her rocks are hurling primarily along the forest floor, let's say 150 feel, with the first 90 to 100' pretty fast and damaging, and the last 50' still moving, but slowing at the end of that range. Add 14 to each roll to hit.

If it connects with the fellow, it does 23 hp damage.

If she does not find the blue guy with these, she moves forward about 100 feet and repeats the process... unless something occurs that would cause her to reconsider her plan.

Mitch - The Twins HP: 106/106AC 29/15/27  d20+21=37 ;
Thursday July 6th, 2023 7:24:09 AM

The party looks about. Mundhildur has an interesting idea about throwing rocks at each degree for 360 degrees to hit the guy, but there are several problems with that, namely you’re in the middle of a thick forest so she’ll be hitting trees a short distance away from herself with almost every throw. Even if the enemy isn’t hiding behind or up in a tree, making the tactic even more useless, the fact that the trees have been shown to be mobile and intelligent means it would likely quickly make them incredibly angry with her.

Things seem to have hit a bit of a stalemate. Tracking indicates he is in this general area - there are signs a humanoid figure passed in the area that end here. Tracking does not let you instantly detect the enemy though, and with the dangers of the forest he can break line of sight and hide when you get close and you can’t seem to find him once he’s hidden himself well. If he sneaks off you can probably find his trail again, but it will be a repeat performance unless something changes the math, and since he stopped for lunch and the party never did things will only get harder from here.

What does the party do?

Since we are not quite yet in combat, Zeoll goes all out and uses another hero point if the DM allows it: Hero Point to gain a second action, activating the Cloak of Arachnida to cast Web at the fellow, in a 20 ft radius anchored among the many trees. Since that derives from an item, the reflex save is only DC13, but the terrain effects may come into play, Zeoll hopes. And of course, with the Cloak, Zeoll himself can walk through the webs without hinderance.

Zeoll’s consideration comes up with a few hints. Akklo is commonly spoken by extraplanar beings - as in ones that travel from plane to plane, as opposed to ones native to a specific one. It’s bulging eyes and strange skin are likely adaptations to dark places, so maybe originally from the plane of shadow. He doubts they are summoned or something like that though, more like a native of the area whose ancestors came from elsewhere.

Asimov’s detector indicates a truly alarming amount of toxins in the creature's system, far more than a regular dose. Considering her gear matches the other two exactly and the doses of poison they had are missing…

The enemy was shooting small darts at the party, one of which was able to make Mundhildur forget the last hour and not be able to form memories for a long while - the large handful that has not been accounted for might have been enough to destroy all of her memories and reduce her to a child or vegetable.

Powerful healing magic, like what can restore ability damage, might be able to restore her to ask your questions.

Zeoll casts Charm Monster on the creature. The Will save DC is 21.

The liontaur tries to talk with the creature. Does it seem to have forgotten language? The liontaur tries to teach it a few words of Common. Also, does it have a name? Is it a boy or a girl?

"We have had a long day," Zeoll says, suggesting that finding a campsite might be a good thing to do.

The party determines that such magic to heal the prisoner is beyond them. That leaves the question what to do with her, and why would she commit such a self harming act to prevent capture and interrogation?

"He - she? was in an awful hurry - didn't one of you say she wanted to tell the others?" asks Mundhildur. "Should we not get to 'the others' fairly soon? I do see purpose in mercy. If she took all that forget-it poison, should we get her over to the boat, tied up, and sent back with whatever information you have gathered? Then we can head back here, find some caves, some mines, and explore?"

Zeoll suggests that no memories can be a fresh start for the enemy scout and that they should take a break.
Elron says that taking her might mess up whatever plans the party has and asks about burglars wearing blue gloves.
Cyrion suggests taking her to places they are headed might let her recover some memories.
Mundhildur suggests they could take her back to the boat and send back a report.
Asimov points out they know the creature has something to do with the disappearances and took the poison to avoid exposing any secrets.

The party finally breaks for lunch. The trees creak and grumble about their campfire a bit but it doesn’t seem to cause them to become hostile. The prisoner doesn’t seem to follow the conversation at all, even when Zeoll tries to teach her a few words, but when made to eat something she starts chewing and swallowing on her own, as if being reminded via muscle memory of what eating is.

Asimov agrees, "I'd like to keep pressing on, but if this creature and her companions were the only lead we had and the companions are dead then she's really all we got. Unfortunately her memory is as addled as a demented old person so I guess taking her back is our best bet."

Mundhildur volunteers to carry her back to the fort, then, when the others have tried whatever they choose to try with her at the fort, onward to the ship. Just in case she comes out of her addled state, Mundhi makes sure she is tied up so as to not make a broad range of motions and asks those on the ship to keep an eye on her.

Cyrion adds that seeing the fort might trigger memories.
Elron is miffed Zeoll said his punchline and agrees to head back.
Asimov would like to press on but the prisoner was their best lead.
Mundhildur is ready to carry her back and keeps her tied up in case it’s all an act or she somehow recovers

The party heads back, with the prisoner remaining unresponsive. It’s a bit tricky finding their way out of the woods considering the moving trees means the path they took on the way in has shifted around but they manage it. As they step out of the shadow of the forest the screaming starts.

The prisoner writhes in Mundhildur’s arms, flailing limbs she cannot remember how to use in a desperate attempt to move back towards the forest. Her screams are an ear splitting wail in Mundhildur’s ear and spasms of agony wrack her body. Something is very wrong and she is obviously in great pain.

"Sensitive to light? Huh!" The liontaur is nonplussed. "Well, we will have to see about getting herr a parrasol, I guess."

The liontaur proposes waiting for night to fall before returning to the fort. While he waits, he writes the daily report and sends it off with Bill the Eagle -- after casting goodberry and giving 8 to Bill and 1 to himself. Cyrion is surprised and concerned.
Mundhildur thinks along the same lines as Cyrion.
Zeoll preposes waiting until night to move. He prepares a report.
Asimov shows he’s out of date with his references - the monster has duckies on his umbrella now.
Elron comments that will make leaving her easier since she can’t run off during the day.

The party’s guess proves accurate - once back in the shade the pain seems to stop though it takes a long while for her to calm down. Even in the few seconds she was in the sun her exposed skin has darkened to a purplish color from the normal blue.

The experience seems to have made her more alert and aware - whereas before she didn’t react to anything and just sort of lay still now she’s looking about and moving a little, like a baby still trying to figure out how it’s body works. It seems she has remembered her body exists and she can move it, though not how to do so.

The scouts gear might prove a solution. It’s a fairly standard sneaking outfit that comes with gloves and a hood she hadn’t been wearing in the shade of the woods. The party can probably cover all of her exposed skin, though it won’t be perfect protection and now that she’s moving she could easily expose skin or look up and get more burned.

Regardless of whether the party stays until nightfall or risks traveling with her during the day they eventually make their way back to the fort. No more dangerous animals have wandered in so it should be safe enough to sleep here.
