The plot thickens (DM MikeK) Monday July 17th, 2023 5:53:07 PM
After a very nice repast, Stock and Stohp are visited by Cathbad, the elven leader of the druids. She gives them a nearly identical report as the Star Mages gave Armalad. The plant golem was created by what appears to be a combination of nature based and arcane based magic, almost certainly from multiple casters. “No one person could cast this many types of spells at the power level needed,” she declares. Then pauses. “Perhaps a mystic theurge in possession of a set of scrolls…but for the number of golems you encountered, it seems unlikely. My bet is two or three spellcasters working in concert.”
Two days pass.
Over that time, the group gets together, compares notes, and asks some more questions.
Once Cathbad hears the name Norella Eksen, she confirms the half elven woman was a member to the Circle of Alder. She eventually became convinced the secret to living with the Crying Wood was to move underwater. She left Floating City some twenty years ago and hasn’t been seen since.
It turns out the Overlord has a means of contacting the merfolk. Messages are passed, but it turns out the merfolk don’t really spend a lot of time on arcane research.
It is at the end of the second day that the report comes in.
Fishermen found a destroyed fleet of three boats. No survivors, or even bodies, are found. Floating amongst wreckage is a basic wooden shield with a message carved into it:
Silver Shields of Floating City, You will come to the source of the Red Fountain, at noon on (a date that is five days from now). I am waiting. Norella

Stohp spends the two days doing orientation with the new employees, catching up on her WLA training, and sharing information gathered with the other shields. Upon learning of the note she is disgusted. "Ah yes, the mass murder method of delivering a message. Can't just send a letter or even make a dramatic display to some fisherman to intimidate them into telling us the message, have to kill a bunch of people just to do basic communication. It's almost certainly a trap, but even if whomever it is wants to talk I say we don't listen and just take them out. Anyone willing to commit mass murder - or mass kidnapping I suppose - just to pass a 1 sentence message isn't worth discussing anything with."
Stohp knows enough about the area to guess at the mentioned location. She'll share what she knows with the others (Knowledge Local 36)
Stock (JonM) HP: 238/238; AC: 29/26/16; Per: +27; Surv: +14; SM: +16 Tuesday July 18th, 2023 9:04:39 AM
Stock tries to head off Armalad before she leaves - "Norella was the name of druid who made herself amphibious...the merfolk just told us about this."
He then listens to Stohp describe her guess at the "red fountain". "I wonder what makes the water turn red. Some underwater rock deposits high in iron ore maybe? Or Magic. Usually stuff like this is magic.
So do we take our longship? Seems like a good chance to take it for a spin.
Z - Did you ever come up with a name for it? If you can't tell, I don't care if this is intended as a trap. The only trap is telling ME where this Norella might be."
Bartomus(Rod) HP: 123/123 AC 21; Glv +16 2d8+2 Slng +14 CMD 11 Melee 12/7/2;Perc+16;Heal+11 d20+8=13 ; Tuesday July 18th, 2023 10:38:58 AM
Bartomus looked at the message and agreed with Stohp. He however was completely stumped as to what area of the Lake would be called a red fountain. That seemed like an odd reference and what would cause the water to turn red. He thought the latter to himself and smiled appreciatively at Stohp for her sharing of where that location might be.
"So, we have a vicious and crazy druidess that has to be working with others to create, or recreate some of the things we have already seen. She seems determined to resurrect, or let loose, the war monger Karkasan. That won't be a good thing for anyone."
Bartomus paused and thought back to what Pip had shared with him.
"There are three essential components that her cabal will need, according to Pip's research, to make their wish a reality." He took a second to remember what Pip had shared and then counted each of them off with a finger on his right hand. " Sarr’s Armor, Largon’s Dragon Crown, and always a crowd pleaser I am sure, the Scepter of the Dead. What if we find one and destroy it? Heck, destroy two of them to be sure? I think I need to ask Pip for some additional information. Also, time to find the Drow and Lizard Folk delegations and ask some pretty pointed questions."
Bartomus then waited to see what the others thought, but he formulated a plan to visit the trade delegations of both the Drow and Lizard Folk, and stop in on the Circle of Alder as well.
Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41 Tuesday July 18th, 2023 12:07:23 PM
Delia shakes her head sadly, "Hopefully in these 5 days she takes a break from murder. But... any benefit in going before those 5 days? We might catch her off-guard and setting up for her trapping of us. And then Stock can spring his trap. Or we can just verify the location of the "source" of the red spring."
If they do wait the 5 days, she agrees with Bart that info gathering is good, but 5 days probably isn't enough time to locate and recover rare and dangerous things like that. She herself will lug some targets to somewhere below water and practice breath holding, swimming, and underwater firing to go with her above surface practices. If they don't wait, she's ready to go with underwater spells prepared.
Hopefully she takes a break from murder (DM MikeK) Tuesday July 18th, 2023 7:36:51 PM
Armalad considers taking the name Norella to the Star Mages, but as Stock points out, both the merfolk and the druids have provided some details:
Norella Eksen is half elven female druid who was a member of the Circle of Alder. She eventually became convinced the secret to living with the Crying Wood was to move underwater. She left Floating City some twenty years ago and hasn’t been seen in the city since then. She did turn up at the merfolk village after that. By then, she was amphibious. She was known to experiment creating plant creatures and the merfolk banished her from their lands after one of her experiments ate a couple kids.
Stohp recalls some of the older folks on the docks speaking of an area in the southwestern quadrant of the lake where the surface occasionally turns red. A good candidate for this Red Fountain.
Is it a trap? Probably. Do the Shields care? Nope. Some discussion is made about arriving early.
Stohp’s spot is about 100 miles from Floating City. Longship cruising speed is about 3 miles an hour, putting you 33 hours (with a double crew and night vision) away. Just sailing during daylight hours would get you there just about noon on the third day. The “invite” wants you at noon on the fifth day.
Bartomus wants to talk to the delegations of It’lal and the Lizard Folk.
While discussions continue, there is a “Bamf” Two large half orcs in Catacombs livery appear, struggling mightily with the weight of a large box. They quickly set the box down on the floor, accompanied by grateful sighs. “Delivery for Stohp”, they cry in unison. “Bamf”. And they’re gone.

"I think we need to figure out a way to protect the boat. Gotta be some defenses we can have magically laid on it, into it, whatever?" Bartomus asked looking about. Then he continued. "I am going to go change into the silks that we got from Lady Yasume and going to visit the It'lal to see what they have to add about those three relics. I think I will see if Pip can come along and take notes. There may be something worth their starting on this tale from the beginning."
He rose from the table and looked about when the Orcs appeared and dropped the large box. He looked at the box and then slowly looked over at Stohp.

Stohp gets her order and is ready to go. It seems she upgraded her armor and got some wands and things to better support the group. "Even assuming all of them don't show up taking out whomever does sends a message to them. We won't tolerate their actions and we won't negotiate for whatever mad scheme they have. Might make the rest reconsider some things. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can get the lay of the land and maybe set our own trap so we should head out today." she'll see to hiring good crew using her extensive local knowledge (41 if that matters)

Stock tries to sneak a peak at Stohp's delivery but then shrugs it off. "I agree that we try to get there early. Who can we get to help us get a crew together?
Bart brings up a good point about protecting the boat. I'd hate to be stuck out there without a ride...oh yeah and the crew - don't want any collateral damage. It might be easier to ask the merfolk for an escort though. The boat drops us off and then withdraws under cover of whatever force the merfolk can provide...
And then one more point; this evil piece of work is pulling The Float's Mighty Defenders away. We have to put the entire place on alert of attack. That means a conversation with the Powers that Be again."

And it takes us away from the Float for longer. This is a woman who lives at the bottom of the Lake. She does not travel the same way as us, she is not bound by our same limitations. The fishermen of the float have told us they will crew the longboat when needed. And while collateral damage is a concern, Norella has Blood Lilies at her command. Anywhere on the Lake surface is in danger. Probably the safest place for the crew is at the Red Fountain under our protection. Plus if it is a ruse to take us away from the Float it gives us the quickest means to get back."
Plans (DM MikeK) Wednesday July 19th, 2023 6:12:36 PM
The Shields set about making plans.
First off, a crew for the longboat. As Zanderallen points out, the fishermen have already offered. Plus, the Shields live near the docks. Plus the Shields are legends. Add in Stohp’s impressive knowledge of the locals and gathering a crew (or two) and prepping the longboat won’t take more than a few hours.
Debate still circles whether to leave early or later, how to go about protecting the vessel, and what, if any other steps to take.

Stock does some last minute prep as well. He dons his belt of physical might over some looser clothes and goes for a long run up and down the ramps of the float (a 22 strength/24 CON helps with the endurance :) ). By the time he returns he has worked up a bit of a sweat and is ready to go.
"Z brings up a fair point regarding leaving early. Armalad - would you be able to secure the magic to teleport us back if needed? We also have the ring gates that we could use to pass messages if the Lake falls under a threat. Paragon Belkior's office had the other, the last time we used it I think."

Bartomus went into his room and changed into the spider silks and holding his glave. When he returned, Stohp was sorting through the various things she had ordered from the Catacombs. He paused for a moment in thought.
"Can we rune a boat? Add some magic to its hardness? Or, coat it in something to do so?" He asked again his mind wondering about their future voyage. "Adding a few harpoons and such might be worth the expense too?"
He shrugged and then headed out the door.
"Going to go grab somethings in the catacombs, get this worked on again," he said as he lifted his glave. "Then going to grab Pip, or at least ask if he would like to come along as I go visit the delegation from It'al to see what they might know about those three items and Karkastan."
He waived and headed off on his errands.

Bart takes a few hours to run some errands. After a shopping trip, he stops by the WLA and asks Pip to come with. Hearing Bart’s purpose, the halfling is happy to attend. The taur’s status as a Silver Shield again opens all kinds of doors, and in no time he and Pip are having cookies and tea with the Lady Yasume Mylyl, Ambassador of It’lal. Unfortunately, the young surface drow has no idea what Bart and Pip are talking about. “I’m sorry, but I’ve never heard of a Karkasan or these three items before, “ she apologizes. “If this is of great importance, I can direct our scholars back home to review our archives.” Sense Motive DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { She seems trustworthy }

Bartomus watched Lady Yasume closely as she considered what he, and Pip, explained to her. He sat down his half-eaten cookie and shot a glance over to Pip before turning to the ambassador.
"Madame Ambassador, I believe this is of great importance. The creature that was bound into the Crying Wood, Karkasan, was the central figure in starting a war between your people and the Lizard Folk, and their larger colleagues, many centuries ago." Bartomus made a point of looking into the woman's eyes the whole time he spoke. He paused, blinked, and then focused his gaze on her face again.
"I fear that we need to know whatever we can about these artifacts, especially anything your people might know. Pip and I will be making a similar request to the Lizard Folk as well. Pip can then share what we learn with both courts. If a war erupts again, with the help of this mad druidess, then it will embroil all of us in its terrors, I fear."
He then made a point of sipping the remainder of his tea before rising. He glanced again at Pip signaling him to do the same.
"We have imposed upon your precious time too much already, Good Lady. I do ask if we may take our leave and return your day to you." Bartomus bowed deeply and smiled when regained his stance.

The Shields agree on Zanderallen’s plan to arrive the morning before Norella’s timeline, and Delia’s plan of sailing through the night.
This means the group will leave the evening of Day 3. It is currently mid day of Day 1, giving everyone two and half days to make any desired preparations.
Armalad takes one of those to scribe her desired spells.
Zanderallen and Delia head down to the docks. Hasan is there to meet them and assures them he’ll take care of reinforcing the cabin.
Zanderallen goes off to meet Pepper. Delia observes lumber getting cut and brought on board. It appears Hasan knows what he’s about. Windows and doorways get reinforced, heavy storm shutters are placed over the windows, and it looks like some kind of arched bracing structure is going up inside the cabin itself. Additional lumber is carried into the hold, along with pitch, nails, and saws of various sizes.
Bartomus and Pip take their leave of Lady Yasmune.
Stohp spends the few days making sure she's able to consistently activate her magic wands and staff.

As they wandered about the Float leaving the fine building that was used by Lady Yasmune, Bartomus made sure to purchase food and drink from a nearby inn for both him and Pip. He also suggested that they proceed to the headquarters of the Lizard Folk's delegation afterwards.
When they arrived at that building, he made an effort to find someone who might remember who he was and ask for the head of their delegation. If granted an audience withough an appointment, he would share the same information that he had with Lady Yasmune about Karkasan and the three artifacts that Pip had learned about. He made sure to introduce Pip and suggest that any information that might be had in the next day or two could be shared with him. After that, it should be shared with Pip.
After their adventure, Bartomus let Pip head home and he did the same. However, he realized he needed to check in with the Catacombs and did so. Learning of a mistake in his thinking, he resubmitted a revised list and then made it home.
On the second day, Bartomus got his gear ready and hopefully his order from the catacombs would arrive as well. He meditated on the spells he might need for the days ahead and prepared accordingly. Bartomus had lost himself in the boat and to the rhythm of the oars slicing through the waters of the lake. Armalad's comments brought him up out of the comfortable spot he had chosen within the ship and he looked about.
"Is it made of the water, or something from down deep below the water?" Bartomus asked as he looked out at the change in the lake.
Perception 28 adding to Armalad's efforts.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 111/111 AC: 27/15/23 CMD: 26 (+4 vs grapple,+6 disarm, trip) Wednesday July 26th, 2023 5:46:30 AM
Stohp puts her hat on and jumps into the water to get a better look at the area underwater

Stock nods at Stohp's splash. "Somebody is in a hurry."
He looks at Armalad and rubs his beard. "I suppose it's kind of like what happens if you were to fill your mouth up with water and expel it. Technically it pushes you but I don't think you'd go anywhere very quickly. I think a proper propulsion device would be more like a portable geyser of endless water than a bottle of endless water meant for drinking.
Bart - Can you spare me a spell of water breathing?
Delia - How about Freedom of Movement again? Unless we want to hold off on that for now..."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 200/200 AC: 32 T: 13 FF: 31 CMD: 33 LoH 14/14 SE 6/6 Wednesday July 26th, 2023 12:37:24 PM
Zanderallen holds up his hands, "Let's not get the cart before the horse here. We're still 6 hours away from the proposed meeting time. Let's have a look around before we expend all our powerful magic, unless they work for the rest of the day. And before anyone runs off too far, we need to establish a means of communication. Armalad, message seems to work before, will it reach the fountain from here?"
Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41 Wednesday July 26th, 2023 12:57:38 PM
Delia descends the mast once they stop moving and has determined that there are no immediately visible threats. As she lands, she pulls a Bottle of Air out of her pack. "If we are willing to hold our breaths and pass this around, we who don't have Underwater Helms can explore underwater too. Freedom of Movement from me is only about 2 hours. I have 3 castings of it with this," she gestures with her Ring of Spell Storing, "And 5 castings of Delay Poison - which lasts 13 hours, so I'm going to load everyone but me up with that before we go any further. You'll be immune until the spell wears out, but we may need to Neutralize poison on everyone before those 13 hours are up just to be safe. For Freedom of Movement, Zander and Bart are covered, so it'll be Stock, Stohp, and third one between Armalad and I."
Unless someone objects, she takes the next 5 rounds to cast Delay Poison on Bart, Armalad, Zander, Stock, and Stohp to last the next 13 hours.
