The Island Beyond the Fort - Day Two (morn)

Mitch - The Twins HP: 106/106AC 29/15/27
Thursday July 20th, 2023 7:40:11 AM

Cyrion rests.
Elron explains how to make a drink? In detail.
Asimov talks about other drinks he’s had.
Zeoll tries to teach the captive common.

In the morning Bill comes back with a thick reply. It commends the party on their efforts and the detailed notes and information they were able to send back. ”I brought some obscure tomes with me in hopes of identifying the source of the problem once you found more details.” Jordan writes. ”With you not only finding clues about the attack but capturing one of the enemy and your detailed descriptions I believe I have found what you are facing. There is a race of humanoids known as the Derro, believed to be distant ancestors of either dark fey or beings from the plane of shadow. I don’t have many records of them but from what I have found it seems they are incredibly paranoid about surface dwellers, whom they hate and fear, and mostly attack to remove all traces of their existence that surface dwellers might find.

I must ask that you track down the Derro stronghold. The mine is too important to abandon, and peaceful coexistence seems unlikely. Now that they know of our presence they will try to disappear anyone who has the slightest inkling of their existence and they will notice their missing patrol sooner rather then later. Presumably one of the mines intersected their tunnels and they took out the camp once made aware of our presence on the island. There is also the possibility of prisoners - from what few record I have they seem fond of experimenting on surface dwellers. Rescuing them is paramount both for your own mission and for our ability to reopen the mines in a timely manner.”

Cyrion will grumble at the word 'experimenting', "I don't like that word, brings up bad memories.

Elron agrees that "muddlin'" is a much better word than "experimentin'," "But we still don't know which mine t' try out. Did th' camp notes say anythin' about new mines or new shafts?"

Zeoll teaches the captive that her name is Derry now, and gets set to leave her in a dark building in the fort while the party heads out. He leaves her water and rations.

"Well, we werre on theirr trrail yesterrday. Let's just keep heading in that dirrection."

Zeoll is all set to head out again, just like yesterday.

Cyrion grumbles at the word experimenting
Elron likes muddlin and comments they don’t know which mine.
Asimov tries to use geography to make a guess.
Zeoll gives the captive a name and sets her up a place to stay while they are gone.

The captive isn’t really up to caring for herself just yet but it’s easy enough to flag down the ship and Delbina is willing to care for her.

The party had already done most of the research needed and learned Stygia and Caina were the most recent dig sites. Given the new information sent over it appears the original plan remains sound - go check out those two mines. If conflict started when the prisoners/miners intersected with Derro tunnels and the Derro became aware of the surface dwellers on the island then that is where they will find the Derro.

Elron -- SteveM
Saturday July 22nd, 2023 12:32:54 PM

"Stygia is th' closest of the two, let's try there first," Elron suggests. But while they're still at the compound, Elron goes on a search for all the mirrors he can find. As he explains to the others, if they get enough mirrors and direct the sunlight down into the mine, it might help them fight these creatures that are so hurt by sunlight.

Mundhildur assists Elron in finding mirrors, although she expresses the thought that once they get past the entrance to the mine, that scheme will quite likely fail.

She thinks that leaving 'Derry' on the ship is a better idea than leaving her alone in the fort.

She moves out with the others.

Zeoll is ready to move out. He leaves very clear instructions on how to care for his charge before they leave.
Elron suggests they try Stygia first. He gathers mirrors to try to send sunlight down upon their enemies.
Mundhildur assists the mirror hunt and says leaving Derry on the ship is likely the best option.
Asimov is ready to go.

The party heads towards Stygia. it's about 13 miles away so half a day or so - again they find the remains that diverted them around lunch time though by now the bones are picked clean and the scavengers have moved on. After a good lunch the party begins to close in on the dig site - do you want to make any preparations or checks around the general area before you head in?

Mundhildur picks up some more of the non-perishable food from the kitchen before they leave. She takes a wool blanket from one of the beds. Using her sharpened dagger, she cuts it to make a double-thick wrapping for her neck so that if someone tries to prick her skin with a memory dart again, the thick wool will diminish the chances that she will lose her memories.

Zeoll is ready to go and has no spells to cast before entering.
Cyrion is surprised how fast the corpses were cleaned, though it has been 24 hours since you last saw the bodies and they were already well on the way to being consumed the first time. He activates some buff powers.
Elron is easily able to find a wheelbarrel in the tool shed more than big enough to carry all the mirrors. Not that he found many, prisoners don’t have many belongings but he was able to find maybe half a dozen.
Asimov tries to get a good lay of the land from outside the mine.
Mundhildur gets some supplies and tries to armor her neck with wool vs small darts.

Stegia mine is an massive open pit mine. Asimov is able to scout it out well enough and doesn’t see anything alarming. The grass and bushes just sort of end at the edge of the mine, giving way to bare earth and a sharp slope. A ramp leads down into the pit where a few openings are in the sides of the pit mine and might just be what the party is looking for.

Several humanoid figures or statues stand scattered about the pit. The paperwork mentioned these - golems of some sort to help with the heaving lifting and digging required for a mine. They stand eerie sentinels, unmoving. Per the documentation only the camp commander could give them orders and they should stay still and docile when not being used for mining.

Asimov reports that he doesn’t see much threatening from the outside.
Cyrion suggests they check the tunnels. He doesn’t trust the golems.
Zeoll suggests he can check for tracks.
Elron sets up his mirrors.
Mundhildur watches the entrance.

The party heads down. The golems do not react in any way other than just sitting there. Made of clay or earth they barely even look like humanoids, just vaguely shaped pillars of earth. Zeoll is able to find signs that something large has been shuffling around the area though.

Elron gets a chance to try his mirror trick. Sadly the only mirrors he could find are wholly unsuited to the task. Only 2 roughly human sized mirrors could be found, one in the captains quarters and one the ship captain loaned him (if you break it you owe me 200g for a replacement). Three small hand mirrors make up the rest of the collection, so overall it’s less “fill the cave with light” and more “make a roughly human sized line a little bright and perhaps slightly blind someone”. A mirror made for purpose might do better, but these were made simply to look at your own reflection not direct light in a specific direction.

The party heads into the cave or tunnel that looks like it has the most activity around it recently. They get a chance to see the crystals so much effort is devoted to harvesting. It’s honestly a little disappointing, they are spiky, thumb sized red crystals that protrude from the wall. It explains why the work is such a pain they had to resort to prisoners though - getting such small crystals out of solid rock or dirt without breaking them must require great effort and focus.

Presumably instead of just standing still being alert the party advances around the corner. The tunnel opens up from about 10 feet wide to a roughly square chamber. It must have been some sort of break room, a place for the prisoners and guards to escape the heat of the day and have lunch.

‘Have been’ because something came through here and tore it apart. Wooden tables have been smashed into splinters, chairs have been slammed into the wall so hard that bits of them are still stuck into the rock, and everything generally looks like a tiny tornado somehow made it’s way in here for some random devastation. Hopefully everyone is wearing boots or they’ll get a lot of splinters in their feet.

Cyrion asks if anyone is incapable of seeing in the dark.

The room’s fairly large and all the destruction makes it hard to say if it’s a dead end or not, but a thorough search indicates this tunnel goes no farther. It’s likely it was dug specifically for escaping the heat of the day. The party is just about done looking around and ready to head back when a rhythmic scraping sound starts to echo down the tunnel. Something is coming towards you.

Mundhildur’s guess is right. Well mostly. A golem walks to the corner like the ones they saw outside, but this one is cracked and weathered. Asimov’s wrist rockets draw it’s attention, but it doesn’t seem to be damaged by it (that’s magic missile reskinned right?). With a roaring moan it rushes towards the party, getting smacked by Mundhildur’s rock with slightly more effect then the wrist rocket.

The difficult terrain is caused by the splitters and rubble. If you have DR that protects you from the splitters you can move through it at full speed. Now that you’ve seen the golem you can make a DC 15 Arcana check Highlight to display spoiler: { this golem’s clearly had its elemental spirit go berserk. What Asimov said filters through a bit, and Elron realizes he is the nearest unsmashed thing. Also, that the creature has gone berserk. Elron decides to try to calm the monster with a touch of serenity. Maybe if it calms down it won't rile back up.

Attack to hit AC 29 -- Causes no damage, but . . . You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). On a successful hit, the attack deals no damage and bestows no other effect or condition, but the target cannot cast spells or attack (including attacks of opportunity and attacks as immediate actions) for 1 round unless it succeeds on a Will saving throw with a DC of 20 (10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wisdom modifier). A monk may attempt a touch of serenity a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

Mundhildur slams the thing with another rock.
Elron tries to calm it down
Asimov studies it. It’s made of clay and earth, so spells that affect the earth should be effective if he has access to any.
Zeoll keeps up the buff and Bill lands attacks that do not beat the enemy’s DR. Nor does Zeoll’s flame get past it’s spell immunity.
The Twins keep up the attack.

Elron’s calming touch has an odd effect on the golem. It doesn’t pacify it as might be expected, but it causes it to hesitate in it’s assault. It’s as if it was calmed briefly before again becoming enraged. It’s enough to make it lose it’s first attack, and it misses Elron with its second.

Mundhildur treats Elron’s wounds.
Elron enjoy’s being pampered.
Cyrion and Asimov examine the golem’s remains.
Zeoll tells everyone they were great and heals the group.

Golems are made by creating an artificial body and then sealing an elemental spirit inside of them. Generally they don’t seem to mind but clay golems, perhaps due to their softer material, have a small chance of going beserk if in combat or otherwise feeling threatened. Once beserk nothing seems to be able to calm them down other then being released from the body they are inhabiting.

This golem seems pretty standard to Asimov’s eyes, but it looks like someone or something was trying to put control runes on it but got interrupted. Perhaps someone trying to make it listen to their commands but it treated that as a threat and went beserk in the ensuing fight.

A quick sweep of the remaining parts of the mine show no indications that this mine broke through to any tunnel network where the derro might live.

"'Aside from the song'?" Mundhildur echoes Zeoll's self-deprecation, turning it into a question. "Your song inspires us, friend, and gives us more strength. Aside from your song, we might still be battling that poor mixed-up creature!"

The party heads out. There is no need to head to any of the forests, there’s a dirt road leading right to where you are going (you only diverted to the forest when you found the signs of the Derro patrol). Fortunately nothing bothers the party and they reach the outskirts of Caina mine around dusk.

Natural vegetation gives way to a large clearing dominated
by a massive pit in the earth—one of the Deepmar mines.
A wooden sign near the start of the path that winds its way

nearby wooden shack surrounded by mining carts appears to

Zeoll casts legend lore.
Asimov peers down the tunnel.

Zeolls spell shows him a brief scene of minors hard at work late in the day as shadowy figures sneak out of the hidden passage. Soon after the stealthy Derro strike, laying low and capturing the minors and their foreman with frightening efficiency before dragging the corpses and prisoners below and removing all evidence of their existence and hiding the tunnel.

It gives no information about the tunnel or where it leads. Presumably nothing legendary has happened there, just people walking in and out of what is basically the front door.

Asimov and Elron have more success gathering information. A series of crystals a short way into the small tunnel seem to be unsteady and rigged to fall on anyone passing underneath. You’ll have to disable the trap to move forward without risking injury.

The tunnel up to the mining area is small and cramped, forcing Mundhildur to shrink down and squeeze through. It meanders about 70 feet curving about so that the front of the line cannot see the back until it suddenly opens up around a curve to a larger cave.

Chunks of crystal jut from the walls and hang from the ceiling of this tall cave, reflecting light in a dazzling display of rainbow-hued colors. A series of narrow ledges marks the southern entrance to the chamber—a passage some forty feet above the cavern floor. Two narrow passages lead out of the area to the north and west.

Only Elron and whomever is directly behind him can see into the cave. There’s some handholds and footholds carved into the stone and a 40 foot climb down (DC 15 climb). The various lights of the party, stuck around the bend and possibly not bright enough to reach the floor regardless, don’t reach the bottom of the climb.

Everyone who made perception checks over 20 can hear soft sounds of movement -the cave is occupied. Elron can’t see anything in the cave and didn’t roll perception but he certainly becomes aware of the occupants as three crossbow bolts slam into the stone around them, one just missing his head.

The liontaur also casts Confusion into the area ahead, as best as he can, careful not to get an ally in the spell.

Will Save DC21, if I am lucky enough to catch any in the 15-ft.-radius burst. [OOC: Since sneak attack has a 30 ft range, maybe Zeoll has a good chance of success. Also, luckily, Confusion is a spell that affects an area, so there's no need to see the targets.]

After Zeoll casts whatever spell that is, Mundhildur rushes forward, and hurls rocks at anything that looks like the reflection of light in the eyes, or hears any rustling or sounds of crossbow reloading. There!

AC 27, 39 hp damage
AC 31 (nat 20), confirmed crit at AC 28, 51 hp damage (I did not double the +2 from bardic inspiration - but if I should have, then the damage is 53)

She ends up as close to the attackers as she can get, ready to start some slamming.

The party jostles at the ledge with several people trying to rush forward to attack the enemy when there is no room for them. Elron is nearly shoved off the 40 foot drop but eventually everyone recognizes the situation and backs off. Cyrion’s light only extends 20 feet so he cannot light up the lower area of the cave so the enemy continues to freely shoot at the pair who have line of sight to the cave. Fortunately the short barbarian is able to keep his head down and they hit nothing but rock.

Asimov whispers, "Is there perhaps another way around besides the exposed opening and drop? If not I don't see how we ever resolve this as anyone who would attempt to climb down would be a sitting duck to the enemies shots."

Was Zeoll able to get off that spell? Seeing the twisty little passage, maybe not?

The squeezing liontaur must wait for others to move up, maybe?

It is only possible for the front 2 PCs, Elron and Cyrion, to get off any spells or attacks that target the cave area because of the line of sight so Zeoll, Asimov, and Mundhildur all posted invalid actions. There is no other entrance that the PCs know of and yes it is a tactically difficult situation because the enemy is smart and specifically set up the entrances to their domain this way.

Note you can move past allied PC's with no problems, but you can't end in their space. If you are willing to climb or can fly you can move past Elron and try to take an action if you fly into the cave or start the climb down.

While Elron says this, his appearance changes to resemble the creatures they fought in the forest (using disguise self property of his ring of chameleon power).

[OOC: OK, thanks for the map and clarification. I'm still not sure that my confusion spell went off. Did it?]

Zeoll sends Bill to fly out and attack enemies.

The liontaur starts casting Summon Nature's Allies IV.

Zeoll is still singing, so everybody gets a +2 to hit and damage.

Bill flies out what does he see, if anything? If he sees an enemy, he attacks. AC24 for 5 damage.

"Good plan, Asimov," says Mundhildur. "All right, do the Twins want to come down with me, then I can come back up for more? Or should we start with Elron and ... Maybe Zeoll, I can carry you myself, but no extras. I'll get large, then we move forward, and I get us down - fast at first, then like a feather fall once we get halfway down."

"So, someone speak up. Who comes down with me first?"

Asimov wonders if there’s another way around.
Elron thinks climbing is slow business and wonders if there’s any way to lure the enemy up.
Cyrion can get down but isn’t sure about the rest.
Zeoll starts summoning (no your spell didn’t go off)
Mundhildur can levitate down while others hold on.
Asimov thinks Irony can act as a shield.
Mundhildur asks who wants to go first.
The Twins volunteer.

The party has a plan. Now they just have to do it. Another trio of bolts fail to damage Elron or Cyrion.

Cyrion will wait until the Twins and their light source is down, then will delve into his psionic powers and dimension slide himself as a move action next to the Twins, then take a defensive stance for the remainder of the round

Sorry confused. What happened to Bill flying out to attack?

Zeoll summons 1d3 dire bats ... just one!
https://cayzle.com/pfsrd//monsters/bat.html#bat-dire

Still singing, he tells the bat to fly out and fight with Bill. It is +7 to hit for 1d8+6.

Bill has three attacks at +13 for 1d4+3 x3.

Zeoll calls for a fey friend to come (special greensinger ability, resolved next round)
