Enter the Kobold - DMs SteveM & Cayzle Friday July 28th, 2023 11:42:26 PM
Before the Second Trial
Nadia seeks out Garog and finds him with the piggies. His delight in them is clear. And he is eager to learn more about them from a druid. She gets the clear impression that he would enjoy being an assistant pig keeper.
For a couple days, the dwarves allow Nadia to keep the pigs, boar, and sow in the stables. It seems clear to Nadia that leaving the adult pigs bound is a bit cruel. But if she frees them, will they break out of the stable? The sow seems more peaceful, and clearly wants to nurse the piglets. They agree, loudly.
Aydi also seeks out Garog, and hears a story. The half-orc feels guilty because when his group was out hunting, he had the chance to sharge a deer and kill it. “”But I couln’t just kill a deer!” he says. Aydi gets the idea that his teammates were not thrilled with that, nor with the watercress he gathered instead.
Ian finds Penelope doing just fine, though it is getting a little crowded in the stables with the two of them, plus the piggies and more people. He gets his gear ready too.
Kaida agrees that the key is “defeat,” not kill. She shares ideas. Nadia also talks with the group about ways to “defeat” a kobold.
Nora agrees with Nadia and Kaida. "It is either completely insane, or it is a test of something else.”
Hamlin, too, is confused about the best approach to this trial.
Aydi tries to nose about for rumors. [OOC: Diplomacy rolled to Gather Info is the check you are looking for.] He finds that people are friendly, and he has a good vibe about the community. He talks with the Native Sons and finds out that they think this is a dangerous mission. “Kobolds come in packs. How can you survive with no weapons?” asks Brom. “Can I use flaming oil?”
Nora also finds the community welcoming. She is gifted the shield (a heavy metal shield), paper, ink, and quills. “If you end up joining the community, you can keep those. If not, just return them or pay for what you used after.”
She also prays.
Aymar focuses on getting ready. He prepares well and thoroughly.
In the morning, all adventurers are guided on a walk of a few hours, through increasingly hilly and elevated terrain. You come to a place with a natural cave. “Good luck!” says Thaeden.
In turn, each of you are brought into the cave, one at a time.

DJ – Rúadán – Male Human-Elf – AC 12 / 12 / 10 – CMD 12 – HP 7 / 7 Saturday July 29th, 2023 1:01:18 AM
In preparation Rúadán spends time talking with the Native Sons along with Aydi voices his concerns and outlining his perspective on what the Chief said. Loyalty does not mean blind loyalty, Duty is only owed if it is moral, Honor has no meaning if the act is dishonorable as in defeating someone who could maybe made an ally, Wisdom is the ability to discern right from wrong, and this mission is wrong, Hard Work is meaningless if that hard work is ridiculous as this mission as outlined is, and lastly Respect is earn not owed, and what about respecting the Kobold we have been ordered to defeat for absolutely no reason, there is no Respect in that. As such per the ideals presented by the Chief and the Elders this mission as outlined is an affront to all that they claim to hold dear and ask us to abide by.
At the cave opening Rúadán voices the very same statements he made to others about Loyalty, Duty, Honor, Courage, Wisdom, Hard Work, and Respect and how all of that is directly opposed by the parameters of this current mission and as such he is not going but he will remain here to heal anyone that returns injured or venture in to rescue anyone who has not returned in whatever allotted time is perceived that this blind, immoral, dishonorable, unwise, meaningless and disrespectful test should take.

Trial Two Conclusion - DMs SteveM & Cayzle Wednesday August 9th, 2023 7:17:02 AM
You have all completed the trial. You are together in a clearing in the mountains, and the dwarf observer, Marnish, is keeping you all company -- and is answering questions.
Only one of you did not defeat the "kobold," and no one has outright failed the trial.
Nadia, Hamlin, and Aymar are the last ones to enter the clearing. They may need some explaining.

Aydi looks over and sees the last three of the group enter the clearing. So we are all done now. Hopefully we will not have to wait to long to find out how we did compared to the other groups. Manish are these the same trials you do for anyone trying to become part of the clan?

Rúadán is still waiting to see if Nora will let him read her notes that she made as the last three of their group enters the clearing. He looks over to them and then back to Nora, glancing just briefly towards Aydi as he makes his comment and then asks his question of Manish.
MM - Eleonora Deepmine -- AC 18/13/15 -- CMD 12 -- HP 11/11 Wednesday August 9th, 2023 2:10:35 PM "Well, I don't know what you get from this..." Nora says, a bit shy about giving the notes.
They read: "Kobold willing to take meet their leader. Glatzzikk was killed by orcs, kobolds willing to ally against orcs. Kobold's name Kratzzikk, Glatzzikk's brother. Wants revenge, wants to live."
StephenT - Aydi Alzila -- AC 16/13/13 -- CMD 14 -- HP 13/13 Wednesday August 9th, 2023 2:27:25 PM
Aydi also wants to relay to everyone. "I just wanted to make sure you all heard. We were never fighting kobolds. They were all gnomes with some illusionary magic on them. Manish told us earlier."
Trial Two Conclusion - DMs SteveM & Cayzle Wednesday August 9th, 2023 2:48:33 PM
"Ahem!" the dwarf observer fake-coughs for attention. "It's Marnish with an rrr in the middle please."
"Pardon me, Rúadán, what was your question again?"
"The people in the other groups will have their fair chances, but you will not see them until tonite, and then only if they pass the trial."
Answering Aydi: "Yes, everybody takes the same trial, and this is the first time we've done it since we never invited adventurers to our clan before."
Marnish also confirms what Aydi says, except that it was all just the one gnome, a clan friend named Gentian Violet. "He is with the gnomish caravan company, and will be leading those who fail the challenge back to Thistleport."
DJ – Rúadán – Male Human-Elf – AC 12 / 12 / 10 – CMD 12 – HP 7 / 7 Wednesday August 9th, 2023 4:43:28 PM
Rúadán looks puzzled as he reads over Nora's notes and after reading them was about to ask a question but Aydi and Marnish confirm what he had discovered during his test. So to Marnish he says, "Actually, I did not have a question but do now, can we assume these notes," he holds up the parchment, "that Nora," he nods in Nora's direction, "took when talking to her Kobold, were simply part of the ruse by the Gentian?"

Hamlin comes back as one of the last to complete his trial. He looks in a word glum as he approaches the group. You see that he is injured on his shoulder and a deeper wound to the gut. "Well things did not go very well for me as you may imagine. The kobold woke up we had a scuffle, during which I used my knife and it surrendered, however for reasons I can't understand its surrender was not defeat. So they wanted me to go back and just murder the poor little guy. I just decided to leave and see what happens. Bugger got me good though." Hamlin cure light wounds himself (4 healed) the wounds seal up completely. "I do hope you all had some better luck of course."

Aymar appears from the depths of the cave. As he sees Thaeden and the kobold converse, he gathers what this trial actually was. He lets out a relieved laugh and turns to Gentain, "I guess I should return this to its rightful owner." He will extend the sword out towards him, handle side first.
He will then turn to the group to take an assessment of how things went with the rest of the party. It seems most faired well, though Hamlin looks worse for wear. He is happy to hear that nobody failed the trial and will be forced to leave.
He listens to the questions being asked about notes, confused and hoping someone will explain it to him.

Rúadán looks to Nora at her comment and says, "My situation was ended by Gentian before I got to start asking them questions, thus Nora the fact that you were able to take it that far is quite noteworthy. So, be proud of what you accomplished. Further I highly doubt anyone without using magic would have been able to see through this ruse, unless they had prior knowledge that the area does not have any Kobolds in it, well at least not that anyone has seen."
He then looks to Hamlin, "I do not think it required luck as we were never really facing a challenging situation, we were just led to believe that we were. They just wanted to see how we would respond to this situation, so they could better gauge how we might respond to real-life situations of the similar nature. I am sure you did fine Hamlin."

Second Trial Complete - DM SteveM & Cayzle Thursday August 10th, 2023 3:08:23 AM
After the individual trials, the group slowly gathers with Marnish there as an observer. The other groups are taken to other areas, although you can get a glimpse of other candidates coming from the cave every once in a while.
Aydi asks Marnish about the trial. She responds that you will see the others tonight. Or the ones that pass, anyway. Rúadán and Nora discuss the notes she took. Word spreads for those that didn’t already realize it that there was never a kobold, but a gnome in a "He is with the gnomish caravan company, and will be leading those who fail the challenge back to Thistleport."
Hamlin is wounded and glum. He thinks might not have done well, but can’t understand why. Aymar appears, and asks how things went with the rest of the party. Rúadán sums up the trial, ”They just wanted to see how we would respond to this situation, so they could better gauge how we might respond to real-life situations of the similar nature."
Kaida observes that Hamlin said he used a knife, but encourages him not to worry. Ian and Nadia are quiet, perhaps reflecting on their own performance.
As the group confer with each other, Marnish tells them the news that none of them are being asked to return to Thistleport with the caravan. Everyone treated the kobold with mercy, a sign of their honor, compassion, and strength. However, not everyone defeated the kobold without light, magic, or weapons, just their bare hands. ”This trial has concluded. The decisions of the council will be announced at dinner tonight. The remainder of the afternoon is yours.”

Aydi will look over to Aymar "Are you going to baths during this slow time I think I need to get rid of the stench that I am carrying. I also think I might go track down the big fella and see how it went for him." While heading over to where Garog is at he will make a side trip to talk to Marnish. "I just wanted to ask for your forgiveness. I want to apologize for miss speaking your name. I meant no disrespect. Also I know very little dwarvish if I will be allowed to stay would you help me learn the language? I believe that is one way I can show my gratitude is to make sure I can speak in the tongue of the people who are allowing me to call this home.
After talking to Marnish Aydi will find Garog and see if he would like to join Aydi back at the baths and ask him how he faired.
OOC: I plan to put a point in Linguistics when we level up so I wanted to have a little fun putting a reason why Aydi will know how to speak Dwarvish.

"Yes, we probably passed, and so are accepted. Which is good. But I still feel wrong, dirty or something. Did I do right, should I have done it in some other way, or maybe somehow do some kind of other task? Maybe I'm overthinking this..."
Brent A - Hamlin Vashtel - AC 13/13/10--CMD 13--HP 8/8 Thursday August 10th, 2023 6:02:18 PM
Hamlin becomes much happier after this revelation. Hamlin will spend some time catching up with Ruadan " So in a way by choosing not to play the game you actually won the game. I'm actually pretty impressed. Here I was thinking you were just being difficult. Tell you the truth I questioned some of the sense of this test. Didn't really see it coming from dwarves". Hamlin will try to spend part of the night getting to know Ruadan and how he became a blood witch.

Second Trial Complete - DM SteveM & Cayzle Thursday August 10th, 2023 10:46:02 PM Nadia is pleased that they all passed and can stay together.
Aydi is glad to get back to their lodgings, clean his gear, and relax. He invites Aymar to the baths, and looks for Garog. He also apologizes to Marnish for misspeaking her name.
Nora still feels wrong about the test, even if they all passed.
Hamllin is cheered. He spends some time getting to know Ruadan better.
Aymar readily accepts the suggestion of a bath. He wonders a bit about fitting into the clan, but puts that aside.
Kaida asks Marnish what other decisions there would be.
Ian and Ruadan rest.
The group splits up for the afternoon. Marnish explains to Kaida that the trials are not simply pass or fail. Everyone Marnish was observing – the eight of you – did well enough to pass the trials. But that does not mean that everyone showed the qualities that the clan prizes in equal measure.
Aydi and Aymar find Garog and Eryndor, and are able to compare notes. Eryndor says he and Elmarin quickly defeated the kobold and took it captive; Althea had difficulty, but eventually got the upper hand and let the kobold surrender. Makbarad did ok. But Simon – Simon was not invited to the dinner tonight. Garog got an invitation to the dinner. So did a couple of the halflings. He says Grimgar was spitting mad when he wasn’t invited. ”Aymar, Aydi, what would you do if one of your friends wasn’t invited to stay?,” Eryndor asks.

Rúadán was not even sure what he was going to do once they had returned from the test, but he listened to the others.
To Nora he says, "It probably felt wrong or dirty because it was wrong and dirty for you. It was also why I objected initially as it felt wrong and dirty to me as well. Still, Thaeden gave me his word that it was honorable and as such I entered with that at my back and faced the situation with honor and dignity. Does it mean I held back, no. It simply means I gave the Kobold the chance to parlay and warned them if the continued to advance I would be forced to kill them. Then when they chose violence, I met violence with violence. Then when the Kobold was in a better mood, I again attempted to parlay and that is where the ruse ended for me. Still not a single action did I take that would be outside my moral compass, granted I do tend to follow my own moral compass most of the time, as I find that the moral compass of many others is not so moral in its pointings. In short Nora, do not worry how others will view thyself, be concerned about how you will view thyself. Basically, to thy own self always be true."
To Hamlin he says, "Well first I was not under the impression that it was actually a game, and if you mean by being difficult that I was speaking up and out for truth and morality, then I guess I will always be difficult." He gives Hamlin a small smile. "Further as I said to Nora, I was simply being true to myself, which meant following what I feel is a quality moral compass. Something I hope to continue to do for the rest of my life. Also, as they say, one should never judge a book by its cover as it can be quite misleading. Get to know the content of that book, or character before deciding what is what. Also know, that sometimes what you see inside, is not what you are really getting. So, discernment and questions are a constant ongoing process even with those you call friends or even family."
To Aydi, Rúadán declines once more, "While the baths soothe some, they are not for everyone, I prefer to be expedient with cleaning and if I need to relax, I find a quiet place and read a good book."
Once having said all that he plans to do just that, find a quiet place and take time to read a good book but Hamlin wishes to spend time and as such Rúadán decides that the book can wait for now and joins Hamlin to share some time together.
Rúadán goes into explaining his path, to Hamlin. "First, I had been apprenticed to be an Alchemist by my father, and a Herbalist by my mother but after a tragic accident when I was still very young, that no longer would my path. Further all I had left of my father was an old book that I found, and within its pages did I take solace. While initially all I could do was look at the indecipherable scribblings on the pages, eventually the book began to sort of speak to me by teaching me how to read its own pages. As I learned more about what the book contained, I also learned that it was not the book that was speaking to me but actually an outer cosmic being. This cosmic being turned out to be an ancient elder god whose name, to which I can only give a poor translation of, is the scared righteous fire of freedom. However, again that is just a poor translation of what I understand so far. In fact, the entities full name encompasses all its aspects in terminology that is not fully translatable. Further it shifts from time to time as certain aspects become more dominant than others at different times. So, it is fair to say that I still have a lot to learn about this entity which I plan to continue to pursue as well as find out perhaps why it chose me, for I do not feel I found this book by mere happenstance. So, Hamlin how did you come to the path of the Bloodwitch?"

" Well I'm from Heranmar and honestly until recently I was not much of a success to speak of. My father was always a bit of a rapscallion and a layabout and I frankly inherited some of those traits from him. He ran around on my mom alot which I suppose is how you came into the world. But I would say that I just felt something was missing in my life. Avoiding work and partying was good for a time but I always read those great legends of heroes fighting for the weak and I just wanted more. I have always put my faith in Warrd so I sought out an answer to what I am supposed to be. I 'm pretty smart, not as smart as you perhaps but I pick up things quick. I was going to be a wizard but the training was too lengthy and expensive so I sought out the Crones of the South who I heard offer power to those who are worthy. My interaction with them was horrifying to say the least but by the time i left I had learned these skills and I had my mission. Come here and help this clan. They also told me about you in a rather criptic way. The rest you know honestly."

My suspicions went wildly up when the kobold responded to my greeting with a straight attack. They are intelligent and can speak, how on earth could they survive with recklessness like that? But I didn't hit the kobold, I just took the weapon. But I'm so glad that you think the same way."
Nora looks at Kaida, then giggles. "I'm being silly, you're right. Let's go find something fun to do and something sweet to eat. There are the musicians from the party at least, they might know. That evening, the time comes to learn what the clan has decided. Those who fail the tests, especially the kobold test, are seated at the back of the hall and served after those at the front of the hall. The fare in the front is venison and boar; the fare in the back is stew and eggs.
Amidst the grandeur of Drakesmeade's Main Hall, Clan Chief Stern Blackaxe stands before a gathering of dwarves and adventurers, the air heavy with anticipation. Stern, his presence commanding and dignified, wears his age with pride, his pale grey beard cascading down his chest as a symbol of his lineage's strength. The hall is adorned with torches and banners depicting the clan's emblem - a black axe against a backdrop of sturdy stone.
As the crowd hushes in anticipation, Stern raises his hands, a gesture that commands respect and attention. His advisors, the clan elders, stand behind him with a sense of gravity, the weight of their collective wisdom palpable in the room.
"Dear kin of Clan Blackaxe," Stern begins, his voice resonating with authority and warmth. "Today, we gather to honor the valor and dedication of these brave adventurers who have come seeking to join our esteemed ranks."
A murmur of appreciation ripples through the hall, acknowledging the presence of the adventurers who have embarked on this journey.
Stern's gaze sweeps over each of the adventurers, his eyes lingering with a mixture of respect and appraisal. "Each of you has faced the trials set before you, tests that are a reflection of our cherished dwarven code. Some among you have shown not only a mastery of our ways but a deep understanding of their underlying principles. Your strength, courage, and adherence to honor have marked you as exemplars of what it means to be a member of Clan Blackaxe."
He pauses for a moment, allowing the weight of his words to settle upon the gathered assembly, then announces five names: Kethril Thornweaver, Eryndor Moonshadow, Althea Stormheart, Aymar Shakhtar. “You have the makings of heroes who will be a notable addition to our community!” says the Chief. “We are proud to offer you status as provisional members of our Clan.”
He looks to the rest of the assembly, and his tone conveys both approval and encouragement. He provides a longer list of names – including among them Aydi Alzila, Eleanora Deepmine, Hamlin Vashtel, Ian Shadowcrest, Kaida Shadowplay, Nadia Silvershield, and Rúadán – "Your performances have demonstrated promise and dedication. While you did not pass without challenge, your resolve and potential have earned you further consideration."
He pauses, his eyes conveying a shared understanding with those adventurers.
"For the rest of you," Stern's voice grows solemn, "we recognize the strengths and talents you bear. Yet, we also see areas where the path of our clan may be a more difficult fit. Your journey is not over. We wish you well in it."
Stern's words are delivered with a sense of fairness and earnestness, acknowledging the varied paths that lie ahead for each adventurer.
"In our great history, Clan Blackaxe has welcomed those who embody our values, who champion honor and unity above all," Stern declares with a tone that resonates with the legacy of generations. "Our stronghold stands as a testament to our perseverance, and it is with utmost gravity that we consider those who would call themselves our kin."
The room is filled with a charged atmosphere, a blend of hope, pride, and respect for the ancient traditions that bind them. Except for one – Grimgar is not about to be dismissed quietly. His protests are quickly shut down. ”Grimgar Stoneforge," Stern's voice carries a tone of warning, "your arrogance and unwavering disregard for the code have been remarked. Just because your cohorts distracted your observer while you stole coneys from the halflings to claim as your own prize does not mean we could not deduce it. That is the way you treated your allies – we see no future for you in this clan.” Grimgar is hustled out while Stern is speaking, as if guards were waiting for him to cause a ruckus.

Kaida is entirely ticked off. She'd defended the concept of the trials when no-one else would, and assured others that it would be a fair test, that the dwarves would only offer an honorable fair test. To be told now that she isn't offered provisional status and is only 'worthy of consideration' is a slap in the face. Thadean assured her that the trial, in his exact words, was "a fair test for you". What a load of goblin dung!
She glares at Thadean, shakes her head, and storms off. She has no interest in the rest of the proceedings.

Nadia watches as everyone in their group gets allowed to stay, but noted that Aymar was surely granted. She would congratulation him for showing the proper temperance needed to join, knowing that his example was one to follow. She points out " You have shown to be the best of our company. That marks a great leader and supporter of all. We shall all strive to follow your lead."
She knew there was no need to feel slighted, because she had not performed to the expectations needed, but was not outcast. That was a gift. She was wary of Grimgar, not trusting that he will always remain honorable in his deeds towards them. She makes a note to keep an eye out for him, and would even be curious as to where he was led to, following if she could.

I understand your perceived need for deception but that does not speak very highly to the quality of your leadership. I mean should we expect to be deceived in the future when it serves your purpose, or is this truly to be an honorable society as you have alluded too but as yet have not truly proven it is?" Having said his peace he sits back down, and wonders what this group of Dwarves are going to do. Will they actually be honorable, as they have alluded to that they are, or, in the face of adversity, will they think of themselves so highly that those they deem lessor have no say in things of importance.

I expected more, Nadia or Ian or Aydi, at least, as it was unfair for those whose skills are mostly magic and it was set up to fail." she whispers to Kaida, then is completely lost as the gnome storms away. She momentarily stirs as if to follow Kaida, but then hears Rúadán's speech. They speak of honor and then outright lie to us; they speak of fairness and equality and then create tests that greatly disfavors any one that is not a quality fighter such as Aymar. Lastly, if I were the type that wanted to infiltrate this city and do it harm, I could have easily past their so-called tests of honor and have been totally without honor when doing so."
He pauses then whispers, "Boil them in oil, we should check on Nadia, she is much more deserving of our respect than they are, especially since they have already disrespected us more than once." He then stands but pauses to let Nora decide to join him or not, and then he leaves to go find Nadia.

He was shocked to hear that only four other people were given initial provisional membership. He was happy to be among those four but became very concerned about the rest of the party. He was relieved to hear that the would all be staying and given further chances to prove themselves. He allows a small smile curl in the corner of his mouth as Grimgar is dragged out of the mess hall. Couldn't have happened to a better person. Unfortunately I don't think that will be the last we'll hear from him. He listens to the retorts from his fellow party members and he empathizes with their grievances. He takes the congratulations with humility as he realizes most of the party is hurting from the announcement. He will thank all those who congratulate him and promises to help them join the clan in any way he can. As the party carries on, he will find Kethril, Eryndor, and Althea to congratulate them on their success. He will soon take his leave and find the rest of the party that has left. He does not feel like a celebration is warranted until all of them have become members.

Rúadán speaks of poor leadership in the clan. He talks privately with Nora, then goes off to find Kadia.
Ian decides to wait and see how things turn out. He wonders if the boar is one that they caught.
Nora is discomfitted by the boar and by the results of the trial, which clearly favored combatants. Ruadan and Hamlin looked in on the boars that afternoon; this could not be one of the ones that was captured live. She goes looking for Kaida with Ruadan.
Aydi congratulates Aymar and tries he console himself that he still has a chance. He goes to find Marnish to see if she knows how he can best use that chance.
Hamlin accepts being allowed to stay for now, although he understands the frustrations others are feeling. He congratulates Aymar.
Aymar is surprised how few were given initial provisional membership. He is very concerned about the rest of the party. The highlight is seeing Grimgar dragged away. Aymar empathize with his fellows, realizing they are hurt. He congratulates the other "winners," but doesn't feel it's time to celebrate yet.

Nora and Ruadan find Kaida with Marnish trying to talk to her. Aydi arrives with questions for Marnish. Marnish turns to Aydi while Nora tries to console Kaida.
"Was as soon as we stepped foot on the Caravan the start of the trial? I know you just observed do you have any advice that will help us all become members of your community?"
Marnish starts explaining to Aydi somewhat hesitantly, but readily admits that the tests started as soon as the adventurers entered the gate to Drakesmeade. They did not see the fight with the owlbears, nor have a clear and consistent accounting of it, for instance. Your interactions with the dwarves were also observed. "Simon, the liontaur in the Patient Five, might get used to the caves in time but is very unhappy here now. That may be why he did not show mercy in the final trial."
"When the tests were developed, there was a great deal of debate about the possibility that the clan would find adventurers who would have trouble accepting the community. It was decided that a dwelling would be built in a protected area on the surface where candidates could live indefinitely. Stern should have explained that part up front, but. . . well, he didn't. With your talk of raising crops and livestock (which do not fare well in the caves), and following your own traditions, and outright challenging the clan, it seemed clear that you belong there for now."
"And yes, the test of combat may be a poor trial for non-combatants."
"Let me ask a question. If you were walking along a path and found a fence across it, would you remove the fence because it's in the way? Would you climb over it and continue walking? Would you turn and follow the fence? Or something else."

Nadia, Ian, Hamlin, and Aymar remain in the main hall, where the scene is much the same. A number of adventurers are unhappy with the decisions, and not only the ones who will be taking the next caravan out. During a lull in the conversations, Eryndor and Althea step forward, their expressions determined. Their eyes meet, a silent acknowledgment of the journey they've shared. Facing Chief Stern Blackaxe and the gathered dwarves, Eryndor's voice carries a touch of solemnity as he speaks on behalf of their group. "Chief Stern Blackaxe, esteemed elders, and honored dwarves of Clan Blackaxe," Eryndor begins, his tone respectful and sincere, "We stand before you with hearts full of appreciation for the opportunity you have extended to us." Althea, standing beside Eryndor, nods in agreement, her gaze sweeping over the assembly of dwarves who have welcomed them. The two alternate speaking, complementing the dwarves, thanking them for their consideration. Eryndor's gaze shifts to the group's fifth member, the one not chosen for further consideration. "One among us, a valued friend and ally, has been deemed not to continue this path. We hold this decision with respect, understanding that the threads of destiny weave diverse paths. With hearts touched by your warmth and acceptance, we must, with humility, decline the offer to join Clan Blackaxe. Our paths, like rivers, find their own course, yet we stand enriched by our experience here."
Chief Stern Blackaxe, acknowledging their decision, leads the dwarves in a round of applause to show respect for their choice. The hall reverberates with a mix of emotions. Many of the dwarves seemed surprised at this outcome.
It is explained that provisional candidates will be offered quarters in the residential level and have more duties. Those who earned further consideration may live in a new compound on the surface, according to the custom of their race.

Kaida crosses her arms and is clearly not happy. "Challenging the clan? Challenging the clan?! I was one of the few that stood up for and actively supported the clan. And the Chief. And the tests! At every opportunity. I stood in front of the clan and declared that there must have been a reason for the test and that it would be fair. But instead I was made a fool. Thaeden gave me his word that the test would be fair for all of us, yet that wasn't true was it. So did Thadean lie to my face?"
She's clearly getting worked up. "Now, are you telling me that Kethril is a good fit for your clan? Kethril that started a fight in the mess hall? That Kethril is more deserving than Nora, who placed herself in harms way and defused a violent situation? What does that say of the clan? That you would rather underhanded troublemakers than someone who acts with honor?"
As for Marnish's acknowledgement of the test. "Combat test? I thought it was a test of mercy" She looks directly at Marnish. "You were the observer. You gave feedback to the council. Where upon Rúadán cuts in and cuts off Marnish, "You did nothing wrong Kaida, it was an extremely horrible test, especially for the purpose that has been explained for it which they cannot even get straight. As it was meant, per Thaeden, to determine one’s honor but in order to do so this meant those imposing the test had to be totally dishonorable and lie about it. In fact, everything since we have gotten here has been nothing but a shame and one continuous lie after another. They speak of lofty ideals but they themselves do not adhere to them even in the slightest. They lie, they manipulate, and they belittle the folk that came her at their request to help them. This is not how an honorable society treats volunteers. There should absolutely be no, you are not good enough to help us in our dire need, as that is simply ludicrous thinking which again speaks extremely poor of the so-called leadership of this community. There is no longer a question in my mind of who should be judging whom because so far, the so-called leadership of this community has failed horribly. So go back, which means immediately get our shoddy self out of here without another word," he points strongly to the door, "and go to tell your dishonorable people that they are not worthy of us and if they do not shape up by tomorrow then we are shipping out and they can go boil themselves in oil for all I care!"

Aydi will think on the question. He answers "I would help tear down the fence then immediately help rebuild it stronger. I think that is what we would all do here. We want to help make this clan stronger in our own ways. We each have our own strengths. Some of it may be compassion, others maybe being a leader from the front. While others like myself is the strength of our heart. We bring our own ideas new ideas to a community where we all can improve. Each person is a part of greater whole and that greater whole is what can make a community stronger. Just like with the fence if it is a simple wooden one by rebuilding it with dwarven steel wouldn't it be stronger." Aydi takes a breath. I know change is hard for anyone. I have seen my share of change in my life. I lived in a village for most of my childhood, ran away searching for my father, ended up living on the streets fighting for scraps barely surviving. These hardships shaped me into what I am today and I think in the end it will be what will help this clan be stronger then what it ever could be.

She would still wander around and question the various dwarves present about different tasks they had, because one thing she did need to know is how to best fit in. She tries to take stock of the needs and concerns of those not testing them, but rather people they may trade goods or services with. If I have been instructed to follow the path to someplace, I'd cross it. If I just wander around I'd follow the fence. " She looks back toward the hall. "That kind of is part of what is our concern here. The clan trials seem to check only one kind of skill set, only one kind of people are accepted, which is different from my impression I got from the invitation letter. The clan leadership seems to think there is only one way to deal with any fence. If all you have is a hammer, all problems look like nails. But all problems are not nails and not everyone of us is a hammer."
"Also, anyone not accepted will return to nearby settlements. And whatever happened here, will be told there. All this trickery and absolute demands will be told in taverns and inns all around. I wouldn't like to send that kind of message, get that kind of reputation, for my clan."
When Rúadán says his final line, Nora nods to him. "That... might well be correct. Their ways didn't lead them to prosperity, it lead them to troubled times. Openness to new ideas could prevent that in the future. Just stacking more meat shields in the way could just mean that much more lives lost."

Each clan and holdings do things in a different manner. But the fact is still there you are trying to change. What I feel has been lost is that while you are trying to change, it comes from our view where the changes should have been in place. Dear Thaeden, you are trying to be a better leader than previous, much as your father and elders are. You are trying to learn, and while we did fail, and perhaps blame lies in the test, you also are willing to learn and change. That alone means success shall be easier. I can not speak for my companions, but I can say I am willing to try and work towards the betterment of all, not just myself."
Even as one who had been slighted, she had also known her life choices and path was not normal for dwarf. That meant challenges and obstacles to be overcame, and hardships to weather.

{ OCC: First I am confused as you state – "the adventurers who were offered provisional membership" – which of our group was only Aymar and yet the content goes on to suggest everyone that was not outrightly dismissed are here. I am going to assume a typo and that everyone was invited. }
Having spent the remainder of the evening with Kaida getting to get to know her better and genuinely fully accepting for who she is, Rúadán woke the next morning with some trepidations. He was not sure what would transpire but he inwardly hoped that the Dwarves would wise up and not continue to stab themselves in the foot in their attempt to walk forward.
To Thaeden's question and after Nadia's reply Rúadán says, "Why not set aside the need for tests, I mean that implies you do not feel we are initially worthy and that is simply not the situation that was implied per the invitation. So, I suggest you simply accept us as regular citizens of your community, with all the benefits and responsibilities that entails. I think none of us came here expecting to be given any honorary status nor a free ride and while it would be great to be a full-fledged clan members, I am sure most of us are willing to wait until we have had a chance to prove ourselves to one another. Again, I will state this, going forward, must be a two-way path with trust and honor flowing both ways, which means you and your leaders have as much to prove to us as we have to prove to you. I think in the end, the you merely accepting us for who we are and what we are and we accepting you for who you are and what you are with a promise from each to work together to better understand one another would be a fantastic start."

"Well..." Nora shies a bit from Thaeden, "thank you I guess. If you give our skills a chance to be useful, that is enough for me. I do appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve the community and earn your collective trust. Aymar listens to Thaeden intently. He feels the apology did not meet all of his party's issues but was sufficient for now. He probably was a bit naive to believe it would be a smooth transition for all involved. However, realizing one's mistakes and showing a willingness to learn is a great sign. He is very intrigued to find out exactly what role the dwarves had in mind for him and for his party.
RobC - Kaida Shadowplay -- AC 13/13/11 -- CMD 10 -- HP 9/9 Wednesday August 16th, 2023 7:47:58 PM
Kaida listens quietly to what Thadean has to say. She has had time to rest, calm down, and think about it more closely. It wasn't Thadean or Chief Stern who made the decision as to her status - it was the council. She's not sure what it was they were told or what it was they were looking for. This understanding though gives her reason to hear Thadean out rather than walk away.
She nods along with what he says, but then furrows her brow when he says that they don't see membership the same as the party. "I wonder what that means? Was that a subtle jab at me? I'll ask him later".
Still, he did apologize to her. She had tried her best and couldn't think of a way she could have possible done better.
Kaida has had time to process the events of yesterday. "It seems to me, and perhaps this was always the case, that there are to be two groupings of the people that came here to help. Those that role model the clan beliefs and pass what we'll call a 'screening' would be invited to become part of the clan. They would be considered an equal member of the clan, be free to use the name, live in Drakesmeade, and do everything anyone else could do. It makes sense to only grant that status for those worthy and not an open invitation to all and sundry".
"There would also be a second group that wouldn't be a part of the clan by name - either by not meeting certain standards, or by choice and choosing to only associate with the clan. They would be fed and cared for and in return asked to do certain tasks, but would not be a part of the clan. They'd be given shelter in a community on the surface".
"If I have that right, then everyone has a choice. Either agree to live by the code of the clan and become a part of it, or, choose to simply associate with the clan. For the time being at least"
She looks to Ruadan. "I think that would also address your concerns. If you need time to decide about the leadership, you can choose to just associate with the clan until you feel both your and their standards are met."
Kaida looks back to Thadean. "Do I have that right?"
Second Trial Complete - DM SteveM & Cayzle Wednesday August 16th, 2023 9:16:47 PM Nadia thinks over her words and restates things in a diplomatic light. She remains willing to give Drakesmeade a chance.
Ruadan questions the need for tests at all. He says that everyone came expecting to have to prove themselves to each other.
Aydi listens to the others, and thanks Nora for the workout.
Nora appreciates the opportunity to put her skills to good use, and points out that mutual trust can be a long process.
Hamlin has questions about what the clan would like adventurers to do.
Aymar listens, but may have questions.
Kaida listens, and sums up what she thinks she has heard: there are two groups – those who join the Clan and those who associate with it.
Ian is quiet.
Thaeden says, "Well spoken. Let's be clear. We invited you expecting to offer clan status to a select group. But now, I want you on an equal footing where everyone has a chance to learn the ways of the clan before they commit to living by them. I think you are all worthy of the chance we should have offered. So here are some of my thoughts. . ."
Adventurers who stay will be taught dwarven to help them integrate with the clan. (OOC: characters receive a free rank in the linguistics skill with the limitation that the language they learn is dwarven. If the character already knows dwarven, then they may instead select Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, or Undercommon.)
Adventurers will be given access to some of the clan's resources such as the forge and the library. The will also be assigned duties according to their abilities, such as helping with various tasks around the stronghold (mining, crafting, maintaining equipment, hunting); participating in military drills and training exercises to improve their combat skills; acting as messengers or scouts on behalf of the clan; assisting with the defense of the stronghold in times of attack. Adventurers may suggest tasks better suited to their talents – domesticating piglets or growing crops have already come up, and exploring the area was just mentioned.
Adventurers will also uphold or at least tolerate the values and traditions of the clan, including showing respect for dwarven customs and beliefs. This doesn't mean that tradition can't be questioned, but that sufficient effort will be made to understand it before changes are suggested.
These responsibilities are meant to help integrate adventurers into the clan, while also allowing them to contribute to the clan's goals and objectives.
In return, the clan will provide housing and meals for the duration of each adventurer's tenure. Additionally, the clan will give each adventurer a one-time credit towards equipment or furnishings. The adventurers should decide whether they want to live on the residential level of Drakesmeade or in the outer holding that is under construction. (OOC: Characters receive 1000 gp in non-magical items, but the stronghold does not have animals for sale. Items may be masterwork.)
"Does this seem reasonable?"

Nadia listens for a while, and looks to the answers given to her fellow party members. It does seem that while some things could have been stated better, she was a dwarf first, and understand perhaps better than everyone the challenges that came with following a different path to a group of people who stick with way they know and have for untold generations. Only Nora would probably also feel the same understanding given her similar choices to be outside the dwarven norm.
[b]" I can not speak for all, but that does seem agreeable. I admit my talents are more scouting and growing food than mining, but that doesn't mean I do not have some remedies to help. I would enjoy being there to see the outpost both defend and stand as an example of how change can be for the better." [/b"]

She keeps hold of his hand and keeps talking. "So the residential level. Individual rooms? Bunks? What's the deal there?"
Kaida's still not entirely sure what skills she can offer the clan but there are things she's more passionate about than others. There are surely some kids about here, and that means school and play. Imagine being able to play all the time and have it considered contributing to society! Sure, there would be actual school work to help with but that's not the part she's focusing on.
Something then occurs to her and her mood shifts. "Does this mean we have to start paying for ale?"

The adventurers almost unanimously accept Thaeden's proposal. Ruadan is quiet, and it has to be explained again for Garog (who didn't understand) and Tob & Clob (who were disappointed).
That afternoon, the adventurers are shown prospective quarters both above and below ground. Garog chooses to live above ground near the animals. Brom, Tob, and Clob volunteer to join him after being pointedly instructed to do so. For those considering the residential level, quarters are organized into "family units," meaning that the adventurers can choose to occupy a set of apartments together or can live in a communal dorm. Those who eat at the communal mess will be served what is available that day. Eating elsewhere will require paying for the meal.

Ruadan goes to have a word with Thaeden while the others are looking at and discussing living arrangements.
Nadia reflects on her own journey away from the Dwarven norm, and decides to help show how change can be for the better.
Nora is a bit confused, but thinks it sounds okay (and not much different than what she expected). She would like to live outside the mountain. She’s surprised so many of the non-dwarves want to live in the mountain.
Nadia and Nora – Highlight to display spoiler: {Your companions may not know with families in the apartments, living in the communal dorm is one indication that a dwarf is “available.” Some young folk go straight from their parent’s families to families of their own, but most do not. If your companions pick the dorms, it may be taken as a sign that they’re ready to settle down in a decade or three.}
Kaida agrees and shakes Thaeden’s hand, that being the traditional thing to do. As she ponders what skills she has to offer, she realizes that ale may no longer be free. By evening, she has decided to live in the mountain, but that she is not ready for the communal dorm. She will find her closeness with the dwarves by finding a new person in the mess hall each day.
Aydi would have stayed either way, but does not appear overly eager as he accepts and requests to live near the dwarves. He thinks about being a scout, and possibly learning a craft. He asks and learns that the baths are near the tavern, but not close to either stair to the other levels. He likes the idea of an apartment. He also plans to learn what he can from the armorer.
Ian says that the dwarves should of course be able to set the standards for their community. He would like the chance offered. He would prefer to live above ground, but makes sure Garog meets Penelope in case the group as a whole decides to live underground.
Hamlin considers and agrees. He thinks he should live with the dwarves to better learn about their ways. That evening, he offers to share an apartment with Ruadan.
Aymar is content. He talks about learning carpentry. He would prefer to stay on the residential level.
Ruadan is clearly overjoyed by Hamlin’s invitation, but visibly steels himself and tells the group he won’t be staying. "I have decided that to best be true to myself, I need to seek someplace better. We have seen the violence inherent in the system here. I do not agree with it. I am going to find quality leadership. The caravan leaves in the morning, and any of you are welcome to join me. But if you do not, then I wish you the best. Mostly I will regret not learning more of you and how you came to your path, Hamlin."
The next morning, everyone is up early for the chow line. The line moves slowly, but as you get to the front of it you see that is because the dwarves are letting their children move to the head of the line. The meal is stew, some sort of sweet bread (that Nadia and Nora can explain is actually a slice of fungus cooked with honey and water), and a selection of beverages. While you are eating Thaeden drops by to tell you he will be available to talk in the afternoon.
(OOC: The Wold generally levels characters up in July and January, but that was poor timing for this campaign this time around. Please level your characters up over the next week and email copies of the character sheets to Cayzle and Steve by 8/25 for our review and approval. Remember to roll your hit points in the Loot ‘n Booty for everyone to see and celebrate (re-roll any 1’s). Update your possessions during this time. Don’t forget you get a language from the dwarves. Domesticating animals requires the animal handling skill. You may talk to each other about plans, but we encourage you to play the characters you want to play. Your characters may also talk to each other and Thaeden about things they would like to do.)

Nadia offers wise advise to her friends. She learns that the dwarves do have a small supply of healing potions and would allow them to be included in the stipend. Up to four potions of Cure Light Wounds (1d8+1, reroll 1s) - 50 gp Up to 8 potions of Stabilize (prevents death if unconscious) - 25 gp
Kaida is more sure that an apartment is the best solution for herself.
Hamlin says farewell. He offers to room with Ian.
Aydi explores Drakesneade. [OOC: You are now familiar with anything on this web page.]
The upper level has a few common areas but are mostly dorms and private areas for dwellings.
The lower mining levels and cavern farms are deemed dangerous and are off limits.
Nora checks on the baby boars and finds Garog and Thaeden already there. Nora asks about housing.
“If people and animals are going to be living above ground, I am thinking about how to do so securely. Maybe you and your friends can meet with me later to go over ideas.”
Both Aymar and Aydi ask about training, and the craftsdwarves of the Clan are happy to share their knowledge. [OOC: Feel free to add skill ranks in Craft, if that is what you mean, as part of your levelling up. No free Craft ranks, sorry.]
Ian wants to learn about the terrain. The outdoor terrain? The dwarves will share tales of what they know, but if Ian wants to go wandering outside on his own, every dwarf he meets will consider this a path to death. “No novice of any class wanders the Scab alone! It is far too dangerous.”
Hamlin perseus a course of self improvement. He puts his new Alchemy proficiency to use.
[OOC: Anyone with craft ranks can spend part of their stipend on crafting using local materials. I am not a fan of the crafting rules, so assume you can make a craft check in gold pieces worth of stuff in a day. You can take 10 in that check if you like.]
Thaeden meets with you all informally -- and with the NPCs who are going to be living aboe ground.
“We have never lived above, because it is too dangerous,” he says. “”But we have to be open to new ways. Some of you are maybe thinking about above-ground buildings such as are found in more peaceful lands. But I fear that the first ogre troop, the first couple giants, will find such out-buildings to be easy pickings.”
“I have an idea based on dwarf lore. We can tunnel up to the surface, emerge, and then build a stone wall, five feet thick and ten high. We can roof it in stone or metal grates to keep all out. Most dangers would not be able to defeat it, and against those who could, we would have time to escape downt he tunnel and collapse it behind us.”
“But I am open to many ideas.” He looks around, wondering what you all will suggest.

Kaida goes off exploring Drakesmeade. She's particularly keen to understand what it is they mine here, and not being allowed to look at the mine directly makes her even more curious. She wants to get some raw materials to do some crafting at some point. Maybe a nice headband or circlet? She's not sure yet, but she isn't in a rush. Kaida sets about looking for a smith of some sort. They might have some materials (metals, maybe a gem or two) they aren't using, and it's always nice to meet new people. She doesn't want to get in the way though so gives them space if they're working and waits patiently until they notice her.
After that she starts wandering the upper level. Kaida wants to be useful and contribute to the clan, so she's on the lookout for where the kids are. If she can help keep an eye on them, play with them, maybe help teach them a thing or two - wonderful! She's not built for any real hard labor, and she doesn't have the same survival skills that the rest of the party have. She's quite charismatic and has a knack for getting along with people, so hopes she can find something to help with. Highlight to display spoiler: {Kaida has +5 to Perform skills, so taking 10 she could hit 15 on Comedy and Dance (for play time), and Oratory (for story time!)}
She drags herself away from the fun and re-joins the party as they talk with Thaeden. Unfortunately, coming up with plans for a Drakesmeade surface expansion isn't something she thinks she can help with. She does have one idea though. "What if you were to surround it with a permanent illusion or two? That might help prevent nasties from finding it. It depends on how grand a scale you're thinking though I guess. It might not be practical."

It could be on the back side of the mountain where no one really enters from. We could turn that old entrance in to the housing area. That way you will have protection on a lesser known entrance and can build up the defenses there. On a side note sense we are trying to raise livestock it will not be at the main entrance. Also you can add the walls there with murder holes for protection to enter the stronghold.

When she gets back to the team, she excitedly explains: "They had crossbows there, most were ordinary, some were clearly worn or shoddy craftmanship, but this one was marvelous! The care they had taken in building it! Every piece was fitted perfectly, every line as smooth as they come. And it was even with lovely decorations! I wonder if I could somehow get it...
She stops her talk about the crossbow, and returns to the topic of building. "I trust that you have done quite a bit of scouting, I'm just wondering how foolhardy the ogres and giants are? If we do some simple defenses, a ditch and a palisade, do ogres still want to try to enter that? If it is guarded? How quickly do they decide it's less arrows and bolts if they just go somewhere else for their food?"

A New Life in Drakesmeade - DM SteveM & Cayzle Tuesday August 22nd, 2023 10:51:47 PM Kaida goes off exploring Drakesmeade, looking to meet people. When she finds the area where the children are instructed; she doesn’t have the “essential” skills the dwarves try to teach their children to survive the Scab, but is a capable storyteller and entertainer. She suggests that the above-ground expansion could be protected by illusions.
Ian recommends scouting outside before expanding.
Aydi asks about any old, disused entrances to the stronghold. He suggests not putting livestock at the main entrance, and fortifying the expansion. He also tries to learn a little bit about Garog. (Garog is towering half-orc with bulging muscles and a bushy beard, and Ian has seen him in heavy plate armor carrying a massive greataxe. While he is naturally inimidating and might make people think of raging barbarians, he’s a straight up fighter with a weakness for animals.)
Nora ponders how to build a safe outside area, until she is distracted by a crossbow. She thinks a few simple defenses to slow them while they are under attack might be enough.
Hamlin spends a couple of days making alchemist’s fire. (By the rules Cayzle stated for crafting, Hamlin makes 18 gp worth of alchemist’s fire a day, and as stated would need 2 days to make a complete vial. He could also make 4 vials in a week (5 days) if he spent more time and money on it. A half vial of alchemist’s fire has no game effect.)
Aymar thanks the dwarves and plans to return. When talking with Thaeden, he asks about the materials they will use for the outside community, and how much the clan is willing to invest in it.
Nadia is quiet.
”You’ve asked the important question, Aymar. How much are we willing to put into an outside community? The answer is, we probably won’t do a lot until the idea has been proven. But we need to put in enough effort to know that if it fails it’s because the idea didn’t work and not because we made it fail. We can put up stonework – buildings and walls – well enough. We can dig tunnels. Livestock in quantity will attract anything that expects to make an easy meal of it. Some things might be stopped by walls, others only slowed. Nora might be right that an active defense is needed. As for illusions, that’s not one of our strengths. You would have to answer questions such as whether the animals could be brought inside at night. And if you’d like to scout a few areas, I think you can accompany a hunting party or two while finding the right spot.”

I would worry about the grazing and food for them, along with water, but that can be fixed as well. And if it can get through stone, then it stands we would perhaps not even be safe here in the caves. But scouting and a defense would cure many of these issues."

Building something new like an above ground settlement is a big step for the dwarves. Kaida assumes they've lived underground and within the safety of Drakesmeade for a long time. This isn't something to be rushed.
"I'm sure there are people in the clan far more experienced with planning, designing and constructing things like that." she looks to Thaeden "They might be best to come up with designs and ideas, rather then the likes of us who've only just arrived in the region".
Kaida is happy to go out with a hunting party. "Sure! Let's go!"
A New Life in Drakesmeade - DM SteveM & Cayzle Thursday August 24th, 2023 6:58:26 AM
By the time they are discussing potential surface structures with Thaeden, the group has been in Drakesmeade for a couple of weeks. The tests only took a day each, with a few days time to meet the dwarves before and after each. Add another week for exploring the area and discussing a farm of sorts, and you’ve still been in Drakesmeade less than a month.
Aydi volunteers to scout during the next hunt.
Nadia says that the animals could be brought inside easily enough and would prefer a safe area familiar to them. She thinks they should combine their ideas to have the best chance of success.
Hamlin talks about manning the above ground location and perhaps establishing a rotating watch.
Nora agrees that scouting would be good as it could help them connect with other settlements and learn about what lives in the area.
Aymar is concerned by Thaeden’s answer, and also volunteers to go scouting.
Kaida recognizes this as a big step for the dwarves.
Ian is quiet.
Thaeden agrees to the group accompanying hunting parties for the next few days, to get a look at the area and see what they find. He stresses, however, not to get separated from the hunting party while looking around. Over the course of another week, the group is able to find a hillside plateau, the entrance to a canyon, a rocky ravine, and a hollowed cliff face. They are located about one to ten miles from the gates of the stronghold.
The hillside plateau rises gently from the surrounding terrain, its soil rich and fertile. Wild grasses and patches of vibrant wildflowers dot the landscape, providing a colorful contrast to the rocky outcroppings that frame the edges of the plateau. The view from the top offers a sweeping panorama of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This location is furthest from Drakesmeade.
The narrow canyon entrance is flanked by towering rock walls, its ground covered in a mix of gravel and sandy soil, with patches of scrubby vegetation clinging to the edges. The rocky ravine is a maze of large boulders and smaller stones, interspersed with hardy plants that have adapted to the harsh conditions. The ground is uneven and strewn with pebbles, and sunlight filters through the gaps between the rocks, creating a play of light and shadow.
The large cliffside with a shallow hollowed cave entrance is rugged, with layers of different rock formations that tell a geological tale. The “cave” is about forty feet deep, which provides some shelter from the elements but would give none from prying eyes. Plants and shrubs cling to the rock, finding purchase in the cracks and crevices.

After scouting out the areas Aydi sees the benefits to all three locations. He kind of wonders though which one could we easily connect to the Stronghold. I know the cave seems like it could work for that, but the plateau gives the advantage of the high ground and fertile land. If we can find a way to covertly connect any of the locations. Aydi will speak to the group, "Each of the three locations have their perks and disadvantages. Even though it is the farthest I think the Plateau may be the most defensible. We will have the high ground, but it is far we will have to have some sort of way to communicate long distances and maybe a covert underground route to get back. I know that will be a heavy undertaking and does give another entrance that will need to be protected, but I could see that work. We would also probably need a rotation of people that would live in the outpost besides the adventurers to make sure it is secure."
MM - Eleonora Deepmine -- AC 18/13/15 -- CMD 12 -- HP 11/11 Thursday August 24th, 2023 4:43:36 PM
Nora is charmed by the hillside plateau. "Look how much flowers grow here! And the grass for animals to eat. Shame it's a bit far from the stronghold, though. I wouldn't want to run the whole trip every day. But if we could have a secondary place here it would be so nice!" She goes to pick some flowers, and arranges them into her hair, on the side that is braided back to show the archery price.
She considers the other places with a calmer tone. "The ravine felt quite difficult for everyone. The canyon could be blocked from the ends, but above is still a question. The cave seemed safest choice for traditional dwarven defenses. But all seemed less fertile than the plateau."
She listens to Aydi, adding her own thoughts:"We could make the drop steeper, and a wall on top. It would be very hard to get there, at least for small, less organized raiding parties."

A New Life in Drakesmeade - DM SteveM & Cayzle Thursday August 24th, 2023 11:15:46 PM
After scouting the adventurers a few areas in mind for a prospective outside holding. Aydi. Nora, and Hamlin all favor a high plateau, although it is furthest away. Aymar thinks any might be worth more consideration.
However, for the foreseeable future it seems that Thaeden prefers the adventurers to immerse themselves in the dwarven language. It does not seem there will be time for more scouting for a while. While studying, the group spends more time with the other adventurers. Garog has no talent for languages, and frequently becomes frustrated. Kethril, on the other hand, takes to it readily. The most out of sorts, however, have to be Tob and Clob. The Native Sons help with the language lessons, as well as working on Undercommon themselves. To relieve the tension, as they put it, Tob and Clob seem to think that the best language immersion comes in the form of stories.
They do not stick with the formal histories. . . "In the days of old, when the moon cast its glow upon the land, a power arose in the depths of Carrion Valley," begins Tob, his voice carrying a hushed tone that invites his audience in. "A power known as the Swarm Queen, an ancient entity of darkness and malevolence."
"It is said that the Swarm Queen was born from the very essence of the valley, a manifestation of the volcanic activity that churns beneath the surface. She rules over a horde of creatures, a legion of twisted forms that dwell in the depths, creatures that crawl and skitter under the moon's pale gaze. For when the moonlight bathes Carrion Valley, the Swarm Queen's power awakens. She calls forth creatures born of shadow and darkness. In the night, they emerge from the hidden crevices, covering the land like a tide, hungry for whatever they can claim."
"They say the Swarm Queen seeks those who dare to stray too far from safety, those who venture too close to her domain," he whispers, his eyes darting as if expecting a specter to appear. "And those unfortunate souls who catch her attention are never seen again. The Swarm Queen's whispers can be heard in the wind that carries her swarm. They say she calls to the lost, her voice like a haunting melody that lures wanderers deeper into her realm, never to return."

Living above ground isn't Kaida's plan, nor something she's particularly focused on right now. There's still plenty to do within Drakesmeade.
----------
Kaida tries to concentrate during the language lessons, but it's tough and feels like work. She's just not a study person. She instead tries to make it a little interesting by learning some of the more 'colorful' words. Those are always fun. She doesn't intend to use them though, and mainly just chuckles at their pronunciations.
The Swarm Queen story is a good one, and she considers casting Ghost Sound to enhance the telling of it but thinks better of it. It's Tob and Clob who are telling the tale and she doesn't want to steal attention.

Aydi will look over at the two and wonder there is allways truth with some stories. He will ask, "How long ago was that story written?" He will then wonder how many different dangers are there in the Scab. When he is done with the language studies he will ask anyone in the group, "Anyone want to stay and do a little bit more research? We still do not really know much of the area and maybe we can get some answers from the Scrolls and books here in the library. Also, it should help work on our skills reading dwarven."
Aydi just got a little bit of an itch from that story and wants to learn more.

"Stories are good, but I might have something more. I got my hands on this", she pulls out a lute with much fancier finish than her old one, "and I could teach you some fun little songs. The rhyming will help to remember the words. They might sound a bit childish, and some are children's songs, but they are a part of dwarven culture you are supposed to know. Someone might reference just to a song by name in a weird occasion and everyone will be laughing, and you wouldn't have any idea if you hadn't heard them." She picks a few notes from a song, her technique clearly gotten better with the time she's spent with the local musicians, or maybe it's the new lute. "So, how about it?"

Hamlin is just enraptured by the story. At its conclusion he remarks.
" When I decided on my path I went to the Crones of the South to petition for power. In them I met beings of such terror and power I thought to myself that this must be what its like to stand before a God. These legends often contain truths we cannot quite fathom. I think we should take heed and proceed cautiously."
As he says this Hamlin rubs his lucky platinum coin and after he whispers a prayer to Wardd.

Aymar will listen to the story intently. He was surprised by the shortness of the story but has to remind himself that not everything can be compared to elven literature. He seems torn between Aydi's proposal to read the books and scrolls available or listening to Nora's musical lesson. He hopes to be able to both.
A New Life in Drakesmeade - DM SteveM & Cayzle Saturday August 26th, 2023 9:46:27 AM Kaida offers perspective that the closest above ground location should be developed first. When it comes to language lessons, she appreciates the story Tob tells more than the drudge work. She even thinks about enhancing it.
Aydi wonders about any truth hidden in the story, and asks Tob and Clob more about it. He is interested in looking at scrolls for more information.
Ian listens to the story, already familiar with dwarven.
Nora also already knows dwarven. She offers to sing some fun children’s songs to help the others learn.
Hamlin likes the story, which in some ways reminds him of the power he draws on as a bloodwitch.
Aymar listens to the story, surprised it is so short compared to those he grew up with. He agrees with Aydi that looking into the scrolls would be good, and also with Nora that learning songs would.
Nadia is quiet.
Clob adds to Tob’s story, ”It’s kind of tradition to end stories like that with a moral, like. . . So, my kin, remember this tale when the moon rises high and the night calls out. Stay close to the safety of our stronghold, for the Swarm Queen's reach is long and her hunger is unending.”
The scrolls discuss a number of creatures called Old Ones that are immortal and are imprisoned in the Scab. There seems to be some disagreement about just what they are and whether they protect the noble races from hidden things or simply hide those things. Teasing out specific information is going to take time and effort. But there is a Carrion Valley in the atlases, and it is thankfully not close to Drakesmeade.
Kethril suggests perhaps they could study something less depressing, like the Festival of Wood and Stone. This gets him a reproving look from Tob and Clob. Tob and Clob then ask Nora if she knows this one –
(Chorus) Bronze and iron, steel so true, Alloys strong, forged by me and you. With hammers strong and anvils bold, Dwarven spirits, never grow old.
Mithril shines, a silvery grace, Armor light, in battles we embrace. Adamantine, unyielding and bright, Dwarven warriors, ready for the fight.
(Chorus)
Copper veins in the earth's embrace, Bringing warmth and beauty to our place. Blacksteel gleams, dark as the night, Tools of craft, guiding our might.
(Chorus)
Gather 'round the forge's glow, Names of alloys, we proudly show. Each metal's tale, a legacy grand, Passed down in our ancestral land.

They are needed for balance, so we can not be rid of them, but we shall guard against them. This bug queen sounds like someone who needs to be put back however."
Despite her clear devotion to nature, she still understood that deities played a part. She had a symbol of Fhorge on her, and she would share with her group any additional information she might have as a nature worshipping part of Fhorge. Which was probably more as a vision of balance than as jailer.

She tries playing the song Tob and Clob suggested. "I know that, but I haven't tried it with this lute yet...".Her playing seems to go quite well, and she seems surprised herself. "Oh wow, this new lute is so easy to play. And the finger exercises really improved my speed. Well, let's try with the singing". She starts to play a nice accompaniment, and sings the song. Her singing is still a bit weak, but followable, but the lute chords are quite good.
