The Red Fountain

Taur overboard (DM MikeK)
Wednesday July 26th, 2023 7:23:23 PM

Armalad and Bartomus try to make out more about the colored water.
From their vantage point, there’s not any more to see.

The water is a bright orange-red color in a circle about 60’ in diameter. There is some bubbling at the very center.

Stohp puts on her hat(?) and jumps in the water. Visibility here is about 100’. Positioned near the surface and about 180’ from the center of the discoloration, the taur really can’t see much of anything.

Stock is amused and Zanderallen cautions against getting ahead of yourselves.

The two discuss stratagems with Armalad and Delia.

The ranger offers a series of spells.

The lake surface is clear and calm.
No one sees anything else.

Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27

Armalad says, "Well the decanter has several options, they being stream, fountain and geyser."

"I imagine if I were to set the decanter to geyser mode underwater that 20 foot long 1 foot wide stream at 30 gallons per round could be used in the water jet fashioned I envisioned."

(her helm of underwater action)

Stohp pokes her head up and reports seeing no danger in the immediate area. She'll then pull out the staff of divination she purchased and activates it's Prying Eyes effect. 27 tiny eyeballs appear in the water around her. "Spread out evenly through the water traveling 200 feet then return. If you see anything that dangerous return at once."

That should give the party a good idea of the general area. Since the eyes know what she knows they should be able to come back if they run across anything she'd consider dangerous (I think first time using this).

Stock stares overboard at swimming Stohp and shakes his head. "She's definitely motivated.

There is very little I can do until I have a target...I'm going to fly up there and see if I can get a good view."

He drinks a potion and then lifts off the ship, banking in slow arcs with Hawky until he gets up to about 100 ft. He then does about a 1/4 mile circle, keeping an eye out before returning to the ship 5 minutes later.

Zanderallen holds at the ship, keeping an eye on the scouts for any signs of trouble. He spends the time checking all his gear and making sure everything is secured, especially the draw string on his bag of holding. It would be a massive pain if it got filled up with water.

Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41  d20+13=17 ; d20+8=10 ;

Hawky paces Stock as they ascend, eying the typically ground-bound dwarf. He adds his eyes to the circuit, though is a little distracted by his flying ally. He does, however, make sure to exhibit his superior flying speed upon descent, making a steep dive and abrupt stop back to his perch on Delia's shoulder. He preens himself calmly as she continues her conversation with Zanderallen.

Air war (DM MikeK)
Thursday July 27th, 2023 7:26:32 PM

Stohp pokes her head up and reports.
She breaks out her new staff and activates a number of Prying Eyes.
[OOC - Number of prying eyes is d4+caster level (staff cl is 13). There was no d4 roll, but to get to 27 Stohp would need to activate twice (4 charges). Please clarify next post]

While Stohp awaits the return of the Prying Eyes, Stock takes to the air.
He banks in slow arcs until he gets up to about 100 ft. He then does about a 1/4 mile circle and returns.

Hawky does not let this challenge go unanswered. Even after Delia gives him release, the raptor waits a good 20 seconds. Then, he flaps hard, ascending rapidly and shooting past the dwarf to a commanding height. Hawky dives, flashing past Stock again, before executing a series of tight barrel rolls around the dwarf as Stock moves in his circle.

Satisfied he’s sufficiently demonstrated who belongs in the air, Hawky folds his wings and plummets at Delia, flaring his wings at the very last moment to land gently on the ranger’s shoulder. He preens himself calmly, blatantly ignoring Stock, as she continues her conversation with Zanderallen.

Other than Hawky and the circle of orange-red water, Stock sees nothing of interest.

(When copying the rules from the rule page to my character sheet I typo'd and wrote '13d4' instead of '1d4+13. My bad! it is 15 eyes.)

Stohp worries over if she worded her request correctly. Should she have sent them farther? Would they come back if they found a humanoid that didn't threaten them but likely who they were looking for? Would they report back over harmless fish who happen to look a little toothy? Maybe she should have done more test runs of the spell.

Externally she just keeps her head above water and tries to look calm while she waits.

Bartomus seemed to be lost again in his thoughts and realized that Stock had asked for some assistance. But, then Stock flew off and Bartomus was trying to form some idea of what to say. When Stock returned to the ship, Bartomus played catch up.

"Stock, and anyone else," he said as he looked about. "I can ensure you have the ability to breathe underwater for a reasonable period of time. Those that need it, need to gather around for a Taur hug."

He paused.

"I can then shift into a creature of water and do a scout about if that would be helpful?"

Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27

Armalad asks, "Do we still have those knick-nacks we borrowed last time or are we left to our own devices?"

If she does she readies the underwater bow and flippers as well as taking the decanter of endless water from Joker before lining up for the Taur hug so she can breathe underwater.

Stock (JonM) HP: 238/238; AC: 29/26/16; Per: +27; Surv: +14; SM: +16

He touches down on the deck of the boat and gives Hawky a flat stare. "You win. You always do."

Stock then turns to Armalad and says. "Good question. I don't remember returning them..."

So I guess we keep an eye out...or eyes out in Stohp's case...for Norella to show up?

Bart - you may want to be on your guard once she shows up. If she is indeed a druid, she may look at you as her most direct threat."

Delia (Hannah) HP: 120/120; AC 29/17/23; CMD 41

Delia laughs merrily, Hawky's competitiveness bringing a moment of much needed levity to her, "If you want to make him mad, just challenge him to a walking competition next." The bird fixes a stern eye on her, and then very precisely adjusts another feather and adds her to the list of people he is ignoring for the moment.

She becomes serious again as they start talking about spells, "We still have hours to go - I don't know if water breathing will last that long or if Bart has multiple casts."

Report (DM MikeK)
Sunday July 30th, 2023 10:21:21 AM

Stohp sends 15 tiny eyes out in various directions.
Not having far to travel to carry out her instructions, they return before Stock has completed his loop.

Visibility is about 100’ near the surface. Eyes that dropped deeper into the lake found the going darker.
The deepest descended 200’ straight down with visibility allowing it to see another 60’. It did not see the bottom of the lake.
Eyes approaching the circle of orange red coloration spotted a small stream of the same colored liquid rising straight up from an unseen source. The stream is a few inches in diameter, and rises up to the bubbling in the middle of the discoloration on the surface.

None of the other eyes saw anything other than some ordinary fish.

Armalad (Hugh) HP 91/128 AC25 / Touch 19/ Flat 18 CMD 27

"Shall we dive further or are we waiting for something?" she asks

"One moment..."

Stock scrawls out a quick note and then opens up his pack. He pulls out the ring gate and looks around in his bag to see if anything was passed through from the Float side. He then passes the note into the other side. "I just wanted to pass a note through to tell the people back home that we've arrived here. I still worry that we've been pulled out of our defensive position at our home by an enemy that could just then attack our home."

"I agree with you Stock. Not liking this setup at all." Bartomus said as he continued to scan the area for any changes or variations in the pattern of waves that might indicate something hiding along the surface.

He then returned to those in the long boat. "Ok, Stock, you and who else needs the water-breathing spell?'

Bartomus then prepares to cast that spell on those that need it.

He ensured he touched the three before they went diving into the lake. "You should be fine. I am going to utilize the water elemental form, but want this as a backup just in case while we are down there."

Then he swung one leg, then another over the side of the boat. He shrugged and shifted his form into that of a huge water elemental. Then he began to swim downward following the source of the color rising in the red stream towards the surface. He scanned ahead as he descended.

To the bottom (DM MikeK)
Wednesday August 2nd, 2023 8:46:42 PM

The Shields share some water breathing, make ready various magics, and descend.

Zanderallen and Stohp are able to make out the stream of orange red liquid rising from below.
They lead the others toward it until everyone can see the flow, rising about 40’ away on the group’s east.
They descend into the darkness.

Visibility is reduced to 40’ (200’ for Zander and Stohp).

After a 500’ descent, the bottom of the lake is reached.
The floor of the lake is mostly silt, with an occasional rock outcropping.

The stream of red orange liquid emerges from one such outcropping.

Otherwise, no one sees anything interesting.

I still postulate if our adversary means to use this stream of Woldsblood against us somehow or if she perhaps has some connection to the Land of Shadow too. If she meant for us to meet here perhaps she will arrive via it? If she can command this much Woldsblood though she will be very formidable indeed so we need to be very careful."

Stohp is frustrated. She had hoped they could set up some kind of advantage. Perhaps set up some of those magical traps they've run across before or hide some of their numbers in ambush. Maybe do something about the stream of Woldsblood. Instead it seems such magics are either beyond the party or no one can think of a way to do either, and the area's to barren for concealing people or setting up more mundane fortifications. What are they going to do burry themselves in the silt? Build a small fort out of seaweed? Even if she had the tools at hand it's not like a wall stops anyone when swimming.

He gurgled at Delia in thanks for her protection and then spent a bit of time swimming about the Woldbleed that the others had identified.

There is no response.

Stock “runs” in the direction Stohp and Zanderallen pointed out.
Delia moves with him.
Bartomus sighs and follows both.

Zanderallen waits.

The trio moves toward the light.
Delia stops 60’ from Zanderallen and Stohp, who she can barely see at this distance. She can, barely, make out a point of dim light somewhere ahead in the depths.

Stock and Bartomus keep moving.
They are soon lost to Delia’s sight.
And then move out of visual range of Zanderallen and Stohp.

Stock and Bartomus Highlight to display spoiler: { Neither the dwarf nor taur are able to see their other companions.

They have traveled 250’ from the Fountain when they discover the light is in fact 4 everburning torches affixed to the top of several stone columns encircling an area 40’ in diameter. The lights make everything inside the circle easily visible.

A large, flat rock lies in the center of the circle, and a line of smaller stones lead from it to the outer rim on each side, effectively delineating a line across the middle of the circle.
The side closest to the Red Fountain is empty.
Five figures float in the opposite side, waiting.

Delia ponders.

Zanderallen decides this must be the meeting and determines to join it.

"Hello, The Silver Shields approach! Identify yourselves."

“Well THERE you are!” the lizard folk in back replies in Common enthusiastically. “We were beginning to wonder.”
“Identify ourselves? Well CERTAINLY! I am Kar-tiss, emissary of the Great Lord, Karkasan the Immortal, once and future Emperor of the East.”
Kar-tiss has been grinning somewhat manically this entire time, and tends to end his sentences with a little giggle.
The grin drops a little as the lizard folk looks searchingly over Zanderallen’s shoulders.
“You did bring Stohp with you, I hope?”

Kar-tiss, also unarmored, carries only a dagger.

Armalad fails the save and then imbues her phase arrow with cone of cold aiming at the sea serpent (space I10) meaning the serpent, eel, L1 and L3 will all be caught in the Cone of Cold

the arrow travels to the target in a straight path, passing through any nonmagical barrier or wall in its way. (Any magical barrier stops the arrow.) This ability negates cover, concealment, armor, and shield modifiers, but otherwise the attack is rolled normally.

28 vs Sea Serpent AC (negating cover, concealment, armor and shield modifiers) = 11 + 5 shock damage

Sea Serpent, Eel, L1 and L3 all need to make a DC 21 Reflex saves or take 65 cold damage with only 32 cold damage being taken on a successful roll

Armalad then spreads out away from the rest of her group so in order to avoid another area of effect. (OOC move diagonal to Z20l)

And concentrates awfully well at that.
Her first arrow kills L2 outright.

Armalad uses a full round withdraw action to get to V20.
Full round action to withdraw. Not seeing how Armalad gets another full round action to manyshot

Stohp swims straight at Kar-tiss. Maybe L2 might have blocked the taur, but that lizard folk is dead now.
Stohp arrives next to the stone figure.

Kar-tiss returns to flesh and blood form, backing away 5’ from Stohp before very carefully casting a spell while avoiding the taur’s possible attack.
And like that, the lizard folk is gone.
The water closes together where his form once stood.

At Kar-tiss' disappearance, both the sea serpent and the eel flinch, pause a moment, and then flee from the scene.

L4 and L5 take one look at the remaining odds, and also turn tail and run. In no time they are obscured by the darkness outside the range of the everburning torches.

"But, if we have the time, I can get a good sense of which direction they were heading and still heading. It will take some time though."

Entangle - range for Bart is about 1,000' entangles and makes things difficult terrain IF THERE is tall grass, kelp, etc. 40' radius around area and I would target that in front of the nearest Lizardman. Reflex save against a 16 otherwise gains the entangled condition.

And we'll decree Stock can pull Delia at a speed of 20’.

And we'll also decree Bartomus can ‘push’ Delia at a speed of 25’ or ‘lift’ her at a speed of 20’

Delia wants to go up. Therefore, she and Bart move up to the surface, arriving in just over a minute.

Armalad, Stock, Stohp, and Zanderallen can move ahead of them, wait, go up with them, or something else.
Please recall the four are faster than Bart/Delia, and visibility is 60’ at the surface/40’ at the bottom (x5 for Zanderallen and Stohp).

Bartomus makes a mental note that he needs to improve his vision when swishing about in the water as he works to form denser currents of water to help lift Delia upward toward the surface. As he practices water-based maneuvers, he scans the water for any unusual movements while keeping an idea of where his fellow Shields are in the water column.

If no issues arise, he will let Delia swim for the ship while he swirls about a safe distance before swimming to the boat, changing back into his Taur form, and climbing into the vessel.

(OOC: from the item description: “Stream” pours out 1 gallon per round.
“Fountain” produces a 5-foot-long stream at 5 gallons per round.
“Geyser” produces a 20-foot-long, 1-foot-wide stream at 30 gallons per round, you think the Geyser is too powerful to work?)

Armalad decides to stay with the bulk of the team. If everyone is going up she'll go back for Joker and then the pair will go up together. He was still hanging back as the team was approaching the meeting which was a good idea considering that anti-water creature area of effect.

"Well if we want to keep eyes below water then the slower swimmers can get on the boat and we can drop a rope in the water. The fastest of us can stay in the water and keep their eyes open while the boat follows the direction the rope is being pulled. It lets us move a little faster but helps us makes sure we won't miss it because it's under the waves."

As soon as Delia's head breaks the surface of the lake, Hawky is there. She waves him off and he lands on the rail of the ship, staring at her as she swims towards it.

Once she above the surface, Delia suggests to the people with her, "We could all regroup and rest on our ship, then about 3/4s of a mile from here, drop into the water and keep an eye out. There might also be some above water signs of a giant plateau or the basalt, since this part of the lake isn't extremely deep. Or..." She asks the crew if any of them are familiar with this area or have maps/charts of the area.

He gently reminds Armalad's wounds that he healed them and they should stay closed.

The plateau (DM MikeK)
Saturday August 26th, 2023 9:46:17 AM

The Shields reach a compromise of sorts.

Delia, Armalad, and Bartomus get back in the boat.
Hawky glides over to ensure her companion is ok.

Zanderallen, Stohp, and Stock remain underwater.
The trio head off in the direction indicated by Kar-tiss, indicating their direction of movement by occasionally tugging on a line Hasan knots together so as to reach the lake bottom.

The lake bed remains silt, broken up by occasional lichen encrusted bedrock.

After about 10 minutes of swimming/movement, Zanderallen spots a low plateau rising from the sea floor.
The paladin brings everyone to a halt about 150’ from the structure.

It is not all that impressive.
The basalt plateau rises about 50’ above the sea floor and is roughly circular, measuring some 300’ in diameter.

With the top of the plateau still 450’ below the water’s surface, it is not visible from the longship.

The taur went silent and then took a few deep breaths. For the next minute or two, Bartomus was lost to the waves and the sun as he sat silently.

===========
Is there an actual structure? or just a plateau?
Perception 35 or 37 if dwarven stonecunning is of any use; Just trying to get a sense of the overall layout
Knowledge Nature 28 - Does the plateau seem like a naturally formed feature of the lakebed? Is basalt a reasonably common stone in the area, especially for a lakebed?

Delia will spend some time with her bottle of air and her rope trying to rig something to keep her hands free. Her initial thought it something like a horse's nose bag, but that seems unwieldy in practice. She settles for making a harness/carrier/loop that she attaches to her belt with enough slack that she can hold it to her mouth. That way, she can let go of it without losing it when she needs both hands.

She'll stretch, double and triple checking her bow and arrows for any ill effects of underwater use and then be ready to submerge as soon as Bart's spell is done. Just before submerging, she will cast Barkskin on herself.

"Why are you asking if it's basalt? Can't dwarves just tell what stone is, or do you need to go bite it?" Zander grins broadly at Stock, laughing at his humor. He takes in the size of the place, thinking there could be a whole lot of tunnels inside that rock.

Mmmm, good basalt (DM MikeK)

Bartmous tries to figure out where the are.
As best as he can determine, they are right about at the red dot.
Fountain Location

He takes the next 10 minutes to cast a spell.

This gives the Shields time to observe and prepare.
Delia and Armalad wait on the ship, diving down as Bart’s casting completes.

Stock moves forward, getting to within 60’ of the plateau wall.
He can tell it is basalt, which is not out of line with the rest of the lakebed.
The portion of the wall he can see appears natural, with your standard plateauy folds, cracks, and crevices.

At the end of the casting period, Bartomus knows (and probably relays) the following:
You are underwater with a basalt plateau as the only terrain item of interest. A stone door sits on the north side of the plateau. The party is on the south side.
There are a series of tunnels inside the plateau
There are two people inside the plateau.
There are plant golems inside the plateau.

Stock nods at Stohp's question and says, "You know, it's at times like this that I miss some of our more magically inclined members...like Dorbin. He'd have a magical answer here.

Bart - Do you have anything for this situation? Anything that allows you to take the STONE and SHAPE it however you want?"

Assuming there are no answers, Stock leads the way in a circuit around the plateau to where the door probably is.

When he was done with his spell, he worked to commit what he had learned to memory. He then slipped back into the form of huge water elemental

"Well, my meditations had me thinking of softening stone and we could cut the clay out." Bart looked at the dwarf. He recalled the flow of the tunneling he had gotten a sense of and gave some thought as to where he could try such a thing. "Such an approach could flood a tunnel or two, signaling where we are coming from, but worth the thought."

"Delia, if the breathing gets a challenge, I can also recast the spell to allow you to breathe without the bottle."
