The red faced dwarf consults the slip of paper in his hand and shrugs his shoulders, before answering Isaac”this is all of it. Maybe your items are back ordered? There’ve been some distribution problems…” His voice trails off as he looks at the darkening sky, then quickly distributes the parcels wrapped anonymously in brown paper and tied with coarse string. Beatrix quickly claims her package.

While Snark studies the intriguing green key - detecting very faint traces of transmutation magicks, and registers the enchantment as being somewhat related to a Knock spell, Jasper asks about the Abbey and what experiences those who have explored it, encountered.

Benni perks up at the news that something might be happening, and wonders if any of his companions have picked up any scuttlebutt during their activities in town?

Those who went out of doors to see the wizard Olostim off, or are hovering near the front door collecting their deliveries from the Catacombs notice an increase in activity along the wall and suddenly the air is rent by the deep rhythmic ringing of the tower bells.

Maggie comes out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. ”Bad storm’s a comin’. Mind if I leave early? I left the littles at home with the mother-in-law…” The woman looks worried.

Beatrix has no objections to the staff leaving early and gets ready to weather out the storm in her room with a really good book.

Onesimos agrees for Maggie to leave early, and will even walk her to her house before hurrying back to Luck Makers House. Bad storm means closing the shutters, and then checking for leaks during the storm.

It seems like the Centaur has a good idea: staying near the fire in the common room to talk, be available, and have company when not occasionally checking the weather-tightness of the new home.

While riding the storm, it sounds like a great opportunity to talk to Khord, Jasper, and Beatrix about the previous adventures of the Luck Makers. "The Abbey seemed to be full of a combination of Haunts, Undead, and Fey, and we have never yet got into the main buildings. The graveyard seems to have a couple of Haunts and a general feeling of dread. We cleared two outer buildings of undead vermin that turned out to be an outhouse and a shed. And we were able to get into an inner building at the Stable (more undead) that also connected to a walled garden (Fey creatures), and met what I can only describe as a Good Haunt in a small chapel room full of candles. But that last, I have no idea how much was real and how much a magical illusion."

Jasper feels electricity in the air and a drop in pressure before the thunder rumbles. A little alarmed, she concentrates on the storm, trying to sense more about its intensity, including temperature, the direction it's coming from, its approximate wind speed, and if it feels at all different from a naturally occurring weather event.

"Yes, let's get you home with speed, Maggie! I take it those bells mean 'shelter.'"

Jasper falls in on Maggie's other side so the woman is protected between Benni and herself. They deliver Maggie to her door.

"Be safe!"

Back home, Jaspser ensures there's nothing loose outside to go airborne before repairing to the fire. She pulls her knees to her chest to listen to Benni's account of the Abbey.

"What an accursed mess of entities! Fey alone are bad enough; haunts and undead atop that are even worse. I wonder what the history of the place is, and why it's such a magnet for mischief."

Seeing the reaction of Olostim and Maggie, Khord will go to the door and check the sky. He tries to think if he has heard anything around town about what might be coming (Know: Nature = 24, Know:Local = 23)

He will gather his package from the dwarf and set it aside for the moment. He takes in Benni's tales about the Luck Makers first forays into the Abbey. The more he hears the more he wants to check this place out.

As the storm breaks, Khord will settle Niko who gets a little unsettled by bad weather and will continue sharing stories with his companions while the check around the house for leaks or other faults.

Snark looks outside. He tries to use his survival skills to read the weather, but isn't sure. Still, he takes the warnings of the local to heart and prepares to ride the storm out in the Luck Maker's House. He's ready with a Mending spell to address any leaks that may appear.

Appreciative of the offer of an escort, Maggie says she’ll be ready momentarily. The housekeeper makes quick work of tidying up the kitchen and breakfast area..

During this interval, Benni talks about the encounters he, Isaac, and Snark have had in and around the Abbey with Haunts, Undead, and Fey - and the subsequent challenges they’ve had making inroads into the place. To say Jasper and Khord are intrigued by the prospect of exploring the ruins is an understatement.

When Maggie is ready, Benni and Jasper accompany their housekeeper out the door, followed by Snark and Khord while Beatrix goes looking for a good book to read.

Those standing just in front of the house note that the weather seems to be coming from offshore. The air is heavy and there is no movement, and yet overhead the sky darkens purple, yellow and green like a great bruise spreading high above the water and towards the town.

Alarmed by what she sees Jasper struggles to read the weather, then departs with Benni and Maggie, making for the housekeeper’s home. Maggie explains to her escorts that the alarm is a rare occurrence, and only used when those gifted with special insight identify a concern. The alarm warns the captains to get their ships out to where they can ride out the weather, and for townsfolk to seek shelter either in their homes or Quendock Mansion, which has never failed to withstand the stormy weather that plagues the coast during typhoon season. The bells are also a call to the guard, and other able bodied folk to assist families and those who are less able bodied to safe spaces. When Jasper tells her to ”Be safe! Maggie nods in acknowledgement, adding: ”folks in this neighbourhood are usually okay, but it’s harder for folks down by the Water Wall.”

After watching their companions depart with the housekeeper, Snark and Khord study the darkening sky. The wizard has never seen anything like it before, and has no previous experience to reference. Khord on the other hand had been listening when old Gendry was regaling his drinking buddies with stories about how he and other gifted believe certain storms have intelligence and magical properties. That an increased intensity in the eerie glow emanating from the derelict monastery is sometimes related to increased severity of storms, but that the walls of Heranmar and the Quendock Mansion have never failed the citizenry in times of crisis. The one thing the Twilight Ranger knows for sure, is that it’s too early for storm season.

Isaac notices the sky's weird color and mumbles "That ain't natural." Then he is jolted from the oddly beautiful but troubling sight by the alarm bells. He rushes over to the sheriff 's office to assist in evacuating and reinforcing the wall.

Onesimos quickly returns to Luck Makers House and tells the others about Maggie's information. "We need a quick check from the east wall to see if the Abbey is glowing, and then I think it will be important to station ourselves close to East Gate to assist any who may need us."

"Isaac, when you meet the Sheriff, please tell him we will be headquartering the Luck Makers at the Bottim Feeders Inn during the storm, so we are closer to help."


The cleric then collects his adventuring gear and waterproof cloak, and makes for Ralph Bottim's place.

Beatrix hears the commotion and sticks her head out to listen, book closed around a finger to keep her place. "Surely this place has weathered storms before and the locals know what to do. Running around trying to help blindly will just make it harder for the actual authorities with experience in this kind of things have to come save us. We should stay inside."

During the time that Maggie is cleaning up and preparing to depart, Khord opens his bundle and dons his new equipment. Khord shares with all who can hear him what he remembers Old Gendry telling him about the storms and there possible connection to the abbey. He will join those covering the short distance to the eastern gate.

"What are the odds that the abbey is glowing the same colors as the storm." he asks as they climb to the top of the wall at the gatehouse. He will stare out into the distance toward the abbey while Niko stops in the street below and just barks at the gate. (perception = 19)

Once they have confirmed whether the abbey is attuned to the incoming storm (pure conjecture) he will look to see if anyone is caught outside the gate and may need their help.

Benni comes in to report back. Beatrix says he's staying in, and Snark says, “Suit yourself."

The little gnome grabs his cloak and coat and heads out. He's not sure where the Water Wall is, and he heads to the East Gate. As he goes he says to his bat, "Luna, go up and take a look around. Come back and tell me if you see trouble."

He pulls out the green stone key to the Abby to see if it looks or feels any different.

Benni shares what he learned from Maggie with his companions, and Khord provides additional information gleaned from old Gendry’s stories. Though Beatrix suggests everyone stay inside, Jasper, Snark and Isaac have other ideas.

While Isaac heads through town in search of Sheriff Eugene, Benni, Jasper, Khord and Snark strike out for the nearby East Gate in hopes of gaining access to the gatehouse towers and a view of the Abbey.

”No one’s allowed on the wall,” barks the lone sentry thrusting out his arm, a spear in hand, to block passage into the staircase antechamber. Spotting Khord his countenance changes. You’re Wren’s friend, right? And, these be the folks wot scuppered them bandits wot was shipwrecking boats.”
Pulling back his arm he waves the half-orc through, then blocks the passage once again. ”Up you go for a quick look, but right back down, mind you”..

Snark studies the new green key, but it doesn’t look or feel any different. The blue haired wizard picks up a sense of unease via his empathic link with Luna. Every bit as disturbed by the weather, Nikko awaits his master’s return - ears a little drooped, tail tucked, and haunches lowered.

While Khord (rolled a perception 19 vs the 15 required to see the Abbey) climbs the winding staircase, the sentry informs those left below that most of the guard have been deployed to the lower part of town closest to the water in order to help the citizenry evacuate the tent camps by the Port Gate and the occupied buildings down by the docks, as well as prepare to shore up the Port Gates once they are closed. ”We’re not expectin’ trouble from out there” he waves his free hand in the direction of the open gate to the East Road,” ‘it’s more likely to come from the sea. When Khord gains the gate passage between the two towers, he is able to detect the ruins of the Abbey in the distance and confirm the faint eerie glow that is rumoured to presage an incoming storm.

Isaac reaches the barracks, where he is greeted by Ned Green, Sheriff Eugene’s deputy. “We could use a good man like you. We’re encountering some resistance from some of the fisher folk and those living down by the docks. Tessa’s near hysterics. Her pa, old Jonsey says he’s not leaving their shack, ‘cept feet first!” The deputy nods when he learns the Luck Makers are planning to help out. ”Round up your team and report to Eugene. He’s down by the Port Gate with Honora and Gwenlian, seeing off the big ships that’ll do better out at sea.”

After what the guard tells Khord, and from what Maggie told Benni and Jasper, Snark says, "Well, we'd best head toward the Port Gate and see what's needed."

Fortunately, the East Gate is very near the Luck Maker's House, and is on the way to the Port Gate. Snark will duck in to tell Beatrix, "Hey Bea, our help may be needed seaward. The rest of us are headed there, and you may want to come along."

Snark calls Luna to him as he heads with his friends to the Port Gate, and perhaps the docks. The gnome's little legs have to move extra fast just to keep up, but he manages to do so.

Beatrix has a heated internal debate about staying in her newly furnished, warm, comfortable room or going out to get wet and miserable doing someone else's job and possibly just being in the way of the people who's job it actually is. No one's mentioned that the Sheriff has asked for their help to her which would have assuaged her worries so instead what decides her is the fact she's by far the strongest and with the best carrying capacity so might prevent the others from drowning should their attempts at heroism end as badly as she feared.

Not that her decision stops her from grumbling as she grabs whatever rain gear she has and tromps out to join the group.

Onesimos nods to the guard. Once Khord passes on the information about the Abbey, the cleric hustles to Port Gate and to Jonsey's house. First task, get people to safety!

Khord gets a glimpse of the glowing abbey, and a bit of dread settles on him. There is something supernatural happening and he does not like it. He bolts back down to the street, thanking the guards for letting him take a peak and adds, "When this is all over, I'll buy you all a drink down at the Blue Cat to show you my appreciation for all you do for the town."

He lets the others know what he has seen and hearing from them that our help is needed at the port gate will make for that part of town at his best speed. as he nears the gate he will look for Sheriff Eugene or some other authority figure that might give them some guidance about how they could help. Isaac thanks Ned Green " Thanks for the heads up. They went to the east gate. I'll get them and get back to the Port gate and the Docks as fast as we can."
Isaac starts running to the east gate. He hoped one of them knew expeditious retreat or a similar move fast spell.
As he nears the gate he calls out to his fellow luck makers. "Not this one! We're needed down at the docks!"

Khord has a bad feeling about the Abbey and it’s eerie glow - but is it a catalyst or a reaction? Jasper listens to the half-orc, and doesn’t like what’s going on any more than the ranger. A grumbling Beatrix joins the group after being guilted into it by Snark, and together they make their way towards the Port Gate.

Isaac thanks Ned Green for the information, and doubles back in search of his friends. He doesn’t need to go far, running into them just as they reach the inn and tavern, where Ralphus is busy boarding up the windows, while his wife shoos their children inside.

On reaching the Port Gate, the group spot a cluster of folks they know: Honora, First Daughter of the Crones, Gwenlian, the Port Master, and Sheriff Eugene. A frantic Tessa Redlocks is pulling on the sheriff’s arm. ”You’ve got to help me with Pa! He won’t listen to reason!” Benni wonders if this might be a job for him?

Beyond the gates, down on the shore, Fileal, Representative for Hunters and Fisherman, can be seen directing the fisher folk on the beaching of the smaller fishing craft. The WLA administrator, Miles, can be seen pelting down the dock, and tossing a satchel to a grizzled fellow standing at the rail of the New Horizon just as that vessel pulls away from her mooring. Heranmar’s town guard seem spread pretty thin, with most working inside the walls to get folks to safety, and a few on the beach or by the dock buildings, trying to muster folks to seek shelter.

Onesimos sees that everyone is pitching in to help the community and his heart lightens. "Common purpose brings everyone together! Right. Tessa, remind me where you live. Beatrix, we may need your strength to carry Jonsey to safety if we have to subdue him."

And the cleric makes a beeline for Jonsey's house along the shore.

Benni intends to try to talk Jonsey into coming on his own, asking what love keeps him there when Tessa and many others are urging him to safety. If the old fisherman is scared, the cleric will use his Calming Touch. Hopefully, with a couple of extra hands and calm words, they will be able to get Jonsey to move without having to Grapple him to the door for Beatrix to trot him to Heranmar's safe walls. But Benni is willing to do that, too.

Khord takes in the scene, noting the New Horizon leaving port. He hopes that if Lars made it aboard that the ship finds its way through to the other side of the storm. He makes his way over to the cluster of Honora, Gwenlian, and Sheriff Eugene and asks,"Sheriff, what can we do to help?

Jasper understands the reluctance to leave home, but that ocean looks far too menacing. They have to help get the fisherfolk to shelter. She waits for directions from the Sheriff.

Snark rolls his eyes and mutters, "Well, ultimately if he's set on being self destructive there may not be much to do but hog tie the guy and haul his keister out. Let's see what we can do."

Snark will go with Benni to see this Jonsey fella. Before he goes in, the gnome will carry Detect Magic, and will concentrate once inside to check the man and his place to make sure things asc they seem.

He tells the man, "Listen you stubborn old coot - if you stay and something bad happens, you run the risk of Tessa gettin' killed trying to save you. Is that what you want? I reckon you care enough about your daughter to at least humor her and sit in town over an ale while this storm blows through. I'll even pay for your ale. What do you say?"

The Luck Makers sweep through the Port Gate. Khord reports to the sheriff asking how he and the group might be of help. Jasper nods in agreement with the half-orc’s words. Sheriff Eugene grasps Tessa’s hands, and transfers them to Onesimos. ”Show Benni the way, Tessa deary.” Turning towards the volunteers, the sheriff rolls his eyes, muttering”same thing every storm. No one can reason with the old man, and he has to be bodily hauled to safety. Looses the shack every time, and rebuilds in the same place…

Eugene shakes his head, unconsciously reaching for the ruby ‘round his neck. Before he can say anything more, Honora, staring out to sea with blank eyes, speaks in a whispery voice: ”…having trouble with divinations…there is something not quite right…the ships must flee to deeper waters…people must take cover…it will be very bad…I sense…anger?…” Gwenlian, the Port Master clears her throat, ”…the buildings on the docks…tell folks to evacuate post haste. They’ve had enough time to collect what’s important! Get them inside the walls!

Tessa pulls Onesimos in the direction of the docks. He can see a shack on the beach just before the length of wharf with its piers and warehouses. The last of the tall ships is rapidly pulling away from the dock, and Khord can see that Lars is at the rail of the vessel. After a moment watching the New Horizon, the elf called Miles turns away, and runs to help a halfling load a small chest onto a cart. There are several carts and wagons on the docks, and folks busy loading crates, boxes, and chests.

Recruited by Benni, Beatrix follows the cleric, ready to carry a load, if required. Snark and Isaac tag along, since it’s on the way towards the docks anyway.

The shack is a ramshackle one room affair. A faded quilt strung across one end to provide a separate sleeping space, likely for Tessa. Jonsy looks up with rhuemy eyes, from where he is, sitting hunched forward on a cot shoved against the wall. Tessa starts to wail: ”Pa! We gotta leave! Sheriff says!” The old man makes no sign of hearing Snark’s scold, but the gnome registers a blink at the mention of ale. There are no magic vibes coming from the shack or any of its sparse furnishings. Jonsy stares stonily at Isaac when the paladin says his piece, but pushes to a standing position. At Benni’s urging, he takes an unsteady step forward. ”Hush now Tessa girl. I’ll come along quiet like” and without a backwards glance he walks out the door on the arm of his daughter.

Anyone looking out to sea will see the 3 ships that have left port making quick work of getting out to deeper waters, and steering away from a swirling mass of dark clouds and the turbulent sea still quite a way out from the port, but clearly heading in the direction of Heranmar.

Snark presses a gold coin in Tessa's hand to pay for her father's ale.

Then he will cast Silent Image, using it to write in blazing letters 10' tall and about 50' in the air over the docks:

He says, "There, that oughta get their attention." He maintains his concentration on this for about 10 minutes, helping where he can as he does so.

Seeing Snark's letters blazing in the sky, Khord takes his cue.

"We have to help these poor people with these wagons and carts," he says to Jasper. He gives Niko a whistle and they head toward the docks and the desperate villagers. "Hurry now, grab what you can but we must go now."

He will do what he can to get the wagons moving toward the gate. Helping others load there final bundles. He will shout over his shoulder to Jasper and Beatrix "Beatrix, Jasper, can you lend your skills and help pull these wagons to the gate?" He will then grab the handles for a smaller cart and help the villager trundle it up the slope to the gate, Niko tries to help by running ahead and looking back every now and then to make sure everyone is following.

As the townsfolk on the docks and in the warehouses pack up their ledgers, chests, and what goods they hope to salvage Snark creates a giant sign in the sky, urging everyone outside the walls of Heranmar to evacuate to the town proper. It takes a minute before the Silent Image is noticed, but once spotted, there is a chaotic surge of traffic onto the road leading up to the Port Gate.

Jasper transforms herself into a beast of burden - a small, but compactly built bovine - and when Isaac casts Bull’s Strength on her, is very well able to draw a halfling’s cart piled high with chests.

Miles, the fellow from the WLA, who is also helping out, signals the transformed druid to follow him as he grabs the handles of a two wheeled wooden cart and joins the throng on the road. Khord pulls up behind the Jasper drawn cart with another two wheeled hand cart. The older gent to whom it belongs, walks beside the half-orc explaining it contains his accounting books and ledgers, as well as payroll for his workers. ”The warehouses are used by those who provision the big sailing ships, although some are used by the fisher folk for curing and packing their catch and making and storing nets, ropes, and other equipment.” With a resigned sigh he pats the tarped load, ”can’t save everything, but got what’s most important!”

Jonsy answers Benni’s enquiry about his choice of real-estate. ”No particular reason, ‘cept al’ays lived there”. Tessa pocket’s the gold coin Snark pressed into her hand. She gives Benni a pained look over the head of her father, adding: ”never really had enough coin to afford something in town.” She makes a sign with her hand - curled fingers and thumb up - bringing it to her mouth as she tips her head back.

Beatrix, Isaac, and a couple guards checking for stragglers don’t have difficulty rounding them up. Anyone thinking of resisting gives up the idea when confronted by the serious demeanour of the paladin and the imposing size of the centaur.

As Snark’s airborne message dissipates, most of the wagons and carts have made it through the gate. Jonsy and Tessa accept a ride on a wagon, leaving Benni free to help elsewhere. Fishing vessels have been secured against the dock with bumpers to protect them, and smaller boats pulled high up on shore - each with a length of rope attached to an anchor resting on the sand. The guards have secured one of the massive wooden doors at the Port Gate as the last stragglers make their way along the road or across the beach…

Looking out to sea, Onesimos is unable to predict when the storm will reach landfall, but he feels a sudden pick up of wind and the drop in temperature as the dark sky moves ominously over the town.

Snark takes a look around before heading into the Port Gate.

(If I read the DMs summary correctly, it looks like all the folks that should have evacuated to town have done so.)

He talks to Sheriff Eugene, "Well, if that's it then, I guess we oughta go back to the Luck Makers House to ride out this storm. Do you think we should stay near the Quendock Mansion in case there's trouble?

"Also, earlier when we needed to get up on the wall to see the Abbey and look toward the docks, your guards said we were not allowed. Any chance we can get permission to be on the wall if there is a need? It looks to me as if we're a pretty strong part of the this town's defenses, and I think we've proven ourselves trustworthy. I hope you would trust out judgement by now that we would only go up there if we thought it were necessary, and I don't want to have to argue with the guards everytime we need to deal with something."

Onesimos nods to Tessa, each person has their own choices and challenges, and any words from the cleric would only seem like useless platitudes. As Jonsey gets into a cart, he squeezes Tessa's shoulder in silent solidarity, and moves off to help more.

Once the fishermen and dockworkers are all inside the walls, Benni thinks that the air takes a more ominous note. But instead of immediately returning to Luck Makers House, the elf shouts to Sheriff Eugene. "Are there others to the south or north? And where would be the best place for us to be if you need us?" The Sheriff has been through this before and is the local authority in charge: Benni feels it will best help the community to work with the ones with local knowledge.

((ooc: taking a page from my Army training in disaster relief preparation. Army units would create resentment and likely didn't actually help if they arrived and told the locals what they would do. The trained approach was asking the local authorities about the situation and what were the priorities of need, then we could integrate our capabilities with their plans.))

Jasper feels a surge of energy as the spell takes hold. If the circumstances weren't so grave, she might even break into a happy little dancing trot. Instead, she channels the rush strength into pulling. She can't speak while wild-shaped, but she hopes the glance she gives Isaac conveys gratitude.

When she and Khord arrive at high ground, she resumes her own shape and unloads the cart. "Let's hope the storm spares what we couldn't move. We'll be back to help, either right after this ill wind passes or after we've dealt with whoever sent it."

Said ill-wind sends leaves up in a mini-whirlwind and sets wooden shop signs to banging. Jasper's hair banners out behind her. "Khord, Niko, let's get home."

Once everyone is safely behind the walls, he hears Jasper comment about the storm sparing what couldn't be moved. He gives one last look as the gate shuts and wonders what landscape will greet them once the storms have passed, [b]"I think we have done all we can do," he replies.

As everyone starts to get settled, the swirl of wind makes his cloak flutter and whip about. [b]"I think you've the right idea," [b]he says to Jasper as he and Niko head off toward the Luck House. He sees Beatrix heading that way too, and he hopes that their new home will stand up to beating the storm will hand it.

On there way, as he is passing Snark, Benni and Sheriff Eugene he hears Snark requesting clearance for us to access the walls in times of need and thinks it a good idea and hopes he is successful in convincing him of the wisdom in such an arrangement.

Most of the Luck Makers feel their duty to Heranmar has been discharged once they have delivered cargos and charges to safety beyond the Port Gate. Snark suggests going home, but has a few questions for Sheriff Eugene first.

Beatrix would like to get under cover before it starts to rain. Isaac, Khord and Jasper are of a like mind, but linger at the gate to hear what Sheriff Eugene has to say in response to Snark’s request for party access to the city walls and towers, and Benni’s offer to be of further service.

Eugene appears preoccupied with getting the guards to close the second massive door of the Port Gate, and is about to respond , when Honora points out to the sea beyond. The sheriff’s eyes go wide , and he stands frozen staring at the dark wall of water that has formed out at sea, and is now bearing down on the walled town.

Beatrix strikes out for Luck Makers House oblivious to what’s going on behind her.

Jasper yells a warning that gets the attention of those hanging around the Port Gate. The second heavy wood door is shut and the bolt thrown.

Snark shouts instructions, and Sheriff Eugene snaps out of his stupor. He and a couple of guards work to reinforce the gate. Everyone else runs for higher ground.

As the last of the stragglers are being hustled into Quendock Mansion by Isaac, Khord and Niko a 60 ft wall of water, cold and powerful, races swift and unforgiving as an axe felling everything in it’s path. It hunches over the beach, smashing boats, crashing through the Port Gates, and collapsing down onto and over the stone wall that protects the town spraying water as far as the very steps of the mansion.

As Khord and Niko usher the last of the townfolk to safety, he can't help but think about there new home. Hopefully the Luck House will withstand the crush of water. He silently nods in agreement with Jasper assertion that the abbey is somehow responsible for this catastrophe.

"Whew. We escaped that, so far. The question is why did that happen and is that the end of it?

"Hey Sherriff, you ever seen a wall of water like that before?"


The little gnome is not good in water. He will drag a chair over to a window and look out. What does he see outside?

"You may be right Jasper. We should head over to the Abbey - it was glowin' green like that storm was. Maybe there's a way to put a stop to this over there."

Benni makes a mad dash for the Quendock Mansion. Slipping through the door, he slams it shut, and leans against it in relief as the roar of surging water and crashing waves and what sounds like explosions can be heard coming from the lower end of town, and the town’s defensive wall succumbs to the battering of the storm surge.

Khord wonders if the Luck Makers’ new home will withstand the tempest, and agrees with Jasper’s assessment that there’s more to the storm surge than meets the eye. They both wonder how the Abbey might be implicated.

Snark can’t locate Sheriff Eugene in the throng of folks milling about the main floor of the mansion, and remembers last seeing him with a couple of guards, trying to reinforce the gate after closing the great wooden doors. He pulls a chair up to a window and looks out. The wizard can see water about ankle deep over the street and to the very steps of the mansion. Overhead the dark clouds roil and it is darker than one would expect for mid-day. Looking over the roof of the building in front of the mansion, where one would expect to see the straight line of the town wall, there is a gaping breach!

Isaac wants to hunker down and strikes out for home, just as Beatrix rushes down the street past the Bottom Feeder Inn after hearing a cry of distress coming from somewhere near the Port Gate. The centaur can see someone struggling to stand upright and get out of the turbulent water that appears 4-5 feet deep (G1) Beyond that person are two more bodies in deeper water closer to where the doors of the Port Gates once stood. (E and G2)

Onesimos shares Jasper and Khord's thoughts to look into the Abbey after this is over, but only after all this is over. "And we have to consider the glow is actually protection, not aggression, or even nothing at all. We just don't know enough."

Speaking of knowing enough, it only takes Snark's report of inches deep water at the mansion for Benni to open the doors and call to his friends, "OK, Luck Makers, lets go make some luck! We need to track down anyone that isn't in the mansion and assess damage."

Benni goes down to the bottom step of the water and gives a glance to the pond and Lucky Fish. The cleric isn't sure how lucky it is, but he feels it would hurt the town's morale if it is gone in the waters.

Jasper steps outside the mansion and strains her ears for any sounds of distress. She hears cries in the distance, seemingly toward The Bottom Feeder Inn, and sets off toward them.

She splashes through standing water and considers transforming, but decides to save her wildshape for water rescue.

Isaac initially turns to go home but the sudden failure of the wall puts those plans on hold. Turning back Isaac see a guard and the sheriff struggling in the water. Not very adept at swimming he quickly gets a 40 ft rope out of his back pack (from Paladin kit). He ties two knots at one end a foot apart. He throws the rope to the guard nearest him keeping a tight grip on the other end. "Grab the rope" he yells to the guard.

Snark casts Fly on himself and hurries toward the fallen Port Gate. He's maybe 20' in the air, looking over the rooves of the buildings north of Quendock Mansion. What does he see? Can he see E, G1 and G2?

(From the area map on the Woldipeida page, it looks like each side of the Quendock mansion has an entrance.)

The crash of the wall jolts Khord back from his thoughts about the abbey. He rushes outside into calf deep water and makes his way around to the side of Quendock Mansion to get a better look at the damage. He will scan the area to see if anyone nearby needs his help (Perception = 14) through the surging water. He instinctively will grab his lasso in case someone should need to be thrown a line to escape the waves.

Beatrix (with Tinkerbell), flies over the two individuals in deep water near where the port gates once stood. One of the people in the water looks to be Sheriff Eugene (E). He is struggling to keep his head above water. A second figure (G2) is floating face down in the water. (I have placed Beatrix and Tinkerbell on the map per your last post. Please describe how high and how far Beatrix and her bat are flying, and perform checks if you are hovering or performing a manoeuvre that requires a skill check.)

Benni exits the mansion and checks on the Lucky Fish. Though water has surged through some of the streets of Heranmar it has not reached the pool containing the fish. The carp is not likely to escape.

Jasper exits the mansion, and hearing cries of distress, moves a little in their direction. The druid does not immediately see anyone in distress from her current position.

Thinking quickly, Isaac pulls a rope from his kit, and tosses it towards the guard (G1) struggling to make his way through the turbulent water threatening to pull him backwards. The man is just able to clasp the knotted end of the rope, and manages to stay upright, taking a few steps towards Isaac.

Snark uses his magic to fly out into the street and just above the roof tops. He becomes aware of the rescue occurring to his left, and spots two individuals in deep water near where the dock gates used to be. The gnome is just barely able to spot a breach in the town wall nearest the sea.

Knord commands Niko to guard, and leaves his dog in the mansion. The half orc splashes through the water, his lasso in hand. He does not immediately see anyone in distress from his current position.

Those who are close to the water’s edge - Isaac, Khord, Jasper and Benni note that the flood current has stopped, and the water seems to be receding from land, ebbing very slowly and resulting in a falling of the water level. (OOC: new water levels noted on map.) A dusting of sand, shells, and other debris is left behind on the wet cobbles of the streets.

The little gnome flies through the air toward the two figures in the water as fast as he can. As he gets close, he can see that one is face down. "Beatrix - I'll get the guard, you get the Sheriff!"

Snark casts Levitate on the face-down guard in the water, lifting him above the flood. Snark has moved as far as he can, so next round he can get close enough to see if the man is breathing and do what he can to save him.

He calls his bat Luna from his pocket. "Listen Luna, I need you to fly ahead toward's the docks and see what's going on. If you see anythng unusual out there, fly right back here and let me know. Don't take any chances." With that, Luna flutters off toward the docks, ready to return and report the moment she sees anything unusual.

Beatrix is, in theory, easily able to hover breifly to look around (+13 bonus base, the spell grants her half casting level bonus for +2 and hovering is DC 15). However a bad storm is coming which brings high wind so she may just be blown right out of the air (up to -12 to her check). She rolls a 30. Last round she would have flown above the rooftops to see, then forward and down towards one of the two people in danger - so say 40 feet up and then 40 back down and 60 foreword (two moves in a round is 120 feet, going up costs double, all of it is diagonal (so half speed forward)

Beatrix is not a trained lifeguard or rescue worker and isn't sure who she should rescue first. She makes the snap decision that the person who's seemingly unconscious probably needs help more and swoops down to scoop them up (... would that be a strength check? Or can we just say her carrying capacity is 900 and she manages it?)

Onesimos nods towards the pond, and focuses on the water and holes. He can hear Beatrix, Snark, and Isaac shouting and moving to help around the broken gate, so the elf calls out that he is going towards the breech to look for others in trouble.

Ignoring any defenses, the elf runs straight to the nearest breach (60' to AF,28), shouting as he goes. "Hello! Help is on the way! Do you need assistance?"

Once again he is reminded that he needs to look into magic to get him around quicker. Too often, the cleric is unable to be where he is needed...

Snark and Beatrix fly over the water trapped behind the town walls in order to attempt a rescue of the struggling Sheriff Eugene and the unconscious guard floating face down. The blue haired gnome is able to magically lift the unconscious guard 20 ft straight up in the air (levitate applies to an object or creature and a creature must be willing. The unconscious guard will be considered an ‘object’ in this instance and the spell a success). Beatrix is able to pluck the unconscious man from the air, and position him over her shoulder, securing him snuggly with one arm. The sheriff is submerged from the neck down, just managing to keep his head above water, but makes no progress swimming forward. The centaur, occupied with saving the unconscious guard (G2) is unable to help him this round.

Isaac is able to assist his man (G1) onto dry ground and speed the exhausted fellow’s recovery before sending him off to find reinforcements.

Benni, Jasper and Khord splash through the shallows looking for other victims of the rogue wave and subsequent flood. They do not find anyone in distress, and strain to find a way to see through to where the commotion they hear is taking place. (Movement in water < overhead at half speed > overhead requires a swim check vs 15)

Those with sight lines to the breach in the wall will see a disturbance in the water in front of the gap, followed by the emergence of a womanly figure covered in foam and seaweed, her face and bare arms white as pearls, her long pale hair streaming down her back. Two shark fins dance in a circular pattern at her feet.

Holding an intricately carved trident in one hand, she reaches out the other and shakes a fist in the direction of the town. A shrill sound pierces the air and the first words are an unintelligible shriek heard by all. Those who understand Aquan Highlight to display spoiler: { What have you done!?! Look upon the destruction! This is nothing compared to what you have done to my home! } She points to the shallows where bits of torn choral branches roll with the movement of the water, and then at the dead fish and kelp that float around her. The woman appears to struggle to modulate her voice and speak in another language. ”You dare interfere with powers beyond your own comprehension and we…not you…pay the price!”

The little gnome can see this woman is mad about something, and her ability to cause this kind of widespread destruction is waaay beyond his ability to counter or oppose.

Snark does speak Aquan as it turns out.

He replies, to her in Aquan, hoping that using the language of water creatures may mollify her a bit. "Now, simmer down there Ursula, simmer down. Can I call you Ursula? Sorry about the fish and all, but I don't think anybody here wrecked your home and if they did I'm sure it wasn't on purpose. But you coming in here wrecking everything is probably not gonna get you what you want. You say we wrecked the corals and killed these fish. Can you give us a little more to go on here? Where was this? How was it wrecked?"

"Lemme translate for folks here so at least they know why you're tryin' to drown us all, an' I'll let you know what they say. Do you speak the common tongue of us land dwellers, cause that'd sure make this whole thing a lot easier?"


Snark will then translate both what angry water woman said, and what he said in response.

Then he hollers in common, "Where's Benni? Hey Benni, this woman here needs a hug and one of your Flower speeches about love. She's awful sore." He hopes maybe Benni or Isaac can talk some sense into her.

As he says this is flies a bit closer to Beatrix to check on the unconscious guard. Does it look like he's breathing? (Heal 7.)

Onesimos' vision is obscured by a building and his movement by the swirling waters, but he surges on while taking an angle to at least see what Snark is talking about. "I'm here, I'm here! On Looking Glass Pond Road and I can just see her!" The elf winces as Snark's turn of phrase, but nods. He has come to accept that while his gnome friends bald honesty loses much nuance in meaning, the heart of what he says is generally correct.

The cleric has been a pretty good judge of character, and the wizard's translation coupled with the sea-woman trying to speak clearly to them makes Benni think she is not here to fight. "From what you said she said, Snark, it sounds like she didn't make this event either." The elf turns his conversation and attention to the sea-woman. "I am Oh-NESS-ee-muss, Woldian sister, and I do not understand what you say we have done. If the destruction around your home is worse than what we have here, would you like us to help you?"

Crazy yelling fish lady is very concerning, but the sheriff looks like he's going to drown if not grabbed and that takes precedent. Besides whatever she's yelling about had to have happened before Beatrix even got in the area. Khord, not able to understand the sea woman's first words and the words in common sounding like a threat, will run for the cover of the the building and will stow his lasso as he moves. As he comes to the other side of the building, He will catch a glimpse of Snark and Beatrix helping the guard and Beatrix heading down to another body in the water. (Perception = 16) He struggles with his desire top help the swimmer and his not wanting to alert the Shark lady.

A small grey bat flies over the wall built by the town of Heranmar to protect the inhabitants from incursions from the sea. As Luna performs a reconnaissance at the request of her wizard friend, she struggles to make sense of the destruction that resulted from the crushing rogue wave that swamped the docks and beach front, and surged over the thick stone barrier of the sea facing wall. She spots curling waves crashing down on the shore - scattering debris churned up from the ocean floor, along with bits of wood, rope and net. The waves occasionally reach the town wall, spilling a little through the open gate, and the breach in the wall, but for the most part, their strength is spent on the shore in front of the wall.

Inside the wall, Beatrix attempts a heroic rescue. A carrying capacity of 900 lbs implies using the entire body in a remarkable feat of strength, so lifting a 200 lb man with one arm might not be impossible for the centaur. However, in order to collect the sheriff, Beatrix will need to land in water over 10 ft deep (Swim check vs 15) to wrap her free arm around Eugene (who is keeping his head above water, and making a little progress) before flying out again. She will then be able to carry her two charges beyond the reach of water.

Snark does not get a good fix on the status of the unconscious guard. Hopefully, the centaur will be able to get him to safety quickly. The little wizard turns his attention towards the furious fey creature, and makes an awkward attempt at getting her to calm down. His words don’t do much to placate her, but his use of Aquan gets her attention.

Turning her head to fix a turquoise gaze on the Cleric of Flower, the woman arches a pale eyebrow, before answering Benni. She struggles with the Common language, the words interspersed with whistles and pulsed calls that sound like squeaks, screams, and squawks to the untrained ear. ”Irreparable harm came to my home from here!” She sweeps her trident out towards the town, and area beyond in a wide arc. ”I followed the destructive forces, and they lead me in a line to your shores. There is some alignment between this…place…and the ancient underwater kingdom in the Placktik Deeps where I now make my home. Land dwellers have meddled with powers beyond comprehension, and have brought about these disturbances! You cannot restore my friends to life, nor repair the damage done, but you can stop these storms!”

The foam clad female turns angrily toward Snark ”I am Nyana! You insult me with your pathetic jests!”. She thrusts out her free hand and creates a deadly waterspout which she directs at the insolent gnome (Hit AC 24, for 25 bludgeoning damage). Snark is buffeted by the column of water and must make a Fly check vs 20 or be dropped into the water. The small waterspout dissipates immediately after striking the flying wizard.

Jasper moves so she can get a better look at the fey creature, while Khord tries to assess the threat posed by the strange being. He is torn between wanting to help his friends with the water rescue and preparing for what might come next.

The guard rescued by Isaac runs off to find help.

Snark makes a fly check (25) and maintains his position. But that water spout thing sure hurt. Another one of those will take the little gnome. He resists the urge to taunt the woman a second time.

He says to Beatrix, "This woman's trouble. I'm still levitating the guard, so I can just tow him over to that roof. Let him go and save the Sherriff." Snark hopes this move will improve Beatrix' chances.

Snark will head in toward somewhere without waterspouts under him, hopefully with the guard in tow. He lands with the guard on a nearby roof and does his best to administer first aid to the man.

Onesimos sees he needs to try and stop a fight before more destruction starts; especially since it looks like the best way to help Heranmar is by cooperating with the... with Nyana.

"Nyana, please no! A fight between us will only cause more hurt when we should be working together in common cause. We have also had destruction visited on us and this town of Heranmar, and we can move quickly on the land to find and stop this alignment, but we know not what to sense or track. I urge you to not let loss and hatred stop you from finding pragmatic love."

"If you feel it is your best interest to tell us where or what or who about these disturbances, it is our best interest to see them stopped."


As Benni speaks, he wades ever deeper, retrieves his elixir of swimming, and drinks. If Nyara doesn't listen to reason or his friends do something rash, it will come to a fight, and the cleric has to be ready to defend Heranmar and the Luck Makers.

"Nyana, I am Jasper, a druid of an ancient wood. Well met.

My friend Onesimos speaks true. Our town was damaged too, and lives were likely lost. I'm just as angry as you are.

We think the threat is coming from a haunted abbey outside of town. We've resolved to go there to fight whatever is causing this as soon as our townsfolk are safe.

Khord will stay put for now, He will draw his comp longbow from his efficient quiver, trying to keep it dry. Seeing the waterspout, he is close to making a decision about the Shark Lady. As he is reaching for an arrow, he hears Benni and Jasper talking to her and only knocks the arrow. He will listen carefully and try to get a better feel for her motives. (Sense Motive = 28).

He starts to think of the glowing abbey, and thinks about how the town lies between the docks and its haunted walls. (Know:Local = 15) He tries to remember if he has ever heard about any connection between the abbey and the sea or if there are any sea motifs in any of it adornments.

In a remarkable display of aerial acrobatics, Snark remains airborne despite being pummelled by Nyana’s waterspout. He manoeuvres the unconscious guard onto a nearby rooftop, and starts resuscitation. The man’s eyes flutter open, and he rolls to his side, vomiting sea water and bile.

Sheriff Eugene is more than willing to be scooped up by Beatrix. The centaur dives into the turbulent water and has to dig deep to find the physical resources to remain upright.. Securing the heavy man in a strong grip, Beatrix flies to safety, depositing her burden in the shallows where the sheriff can make his way to safety. (OOC: placed Beatrix on the map where she would most likely end up. You can move her on the map, or indicate her position in your post.)

Bent on a mission of peace (and love) Onesimos pleads with Nyana to stand down. Jasper finds her courage, and steps out into the open and builds on her friend’s initiative.

Khord and Isaac make preparations in case the oceanid is unmoved by peaceful overtures. Khord is a newcomer to Heranmar but he does recall hearing about storms and in particular typhoons that sometimes buffet the coast of the Gateway Downs. How there are ghostly sightings on stormy days. Also, how at times, the ruins glow eerily seemingly to signal an incoming storm, according to what folks say, anyway.

Khord senses the ocean creature is experiencing fear, loss, and sadness and because these emotions create feelings of vulnerability and loss of control, she is shifting to anger and is definitely unfriendly towards the group. (Diplomacy check vs 25 to negotiate)

Nyana seems to be paying attention to what Benni and Jasper say, but her temper is up and she is not persuaded by their entreaties. ”The paths of energy that traverse the landscape of the continent stretch out into the oceans and seas as well. These paths were recognized by ancient societies that deliberately erected structures along them in order to benefit from the Wold’s energy. “ Her eyes turn stormy, as she shrieks out ”the paths must be respected! They are not for anyone to twist and manipulate! I do not know this ‘Abbey’! I only know that great trouble comes to my home from this place! The damage you claim is nothing compared to the ruin of my home or the loss of life! Now you will share my pain!” She slams her trident into the water, and a massive downdraft of air sweeps out in all directions from where it makes contact. Roof shingles rattle, and some slip from place, a shutter is torn from one house and blown out onto the water, while others rattle and flap in the wind.

Luna and Tinkerbell DC 25 fly check or be blown back 70 ft and take 4 points non-lethal bludgeoning damage.

Beatrix will leave the sheriff and then, with a sigh, fly towards the crazy lady causing problems. She's a teacher not a town guard this shouldn't be her job but someone has to do it. Fly 30 to close in.

Tinkerbell, a skilled flyer, is able to keep afloat in the wind (33, though wind of a certain speed blows away smaller creatures automatically so that might be a thing). She intercepts Beatrix as the centaur closes in and takes refuge in a pack.

Onesimos can't make any forward progress against the wind, and he thinks again about the wisdom of not choosing to have a Dispel Magic spell handy. The only thing he has are his words, and he tries again to calm Nyara down. "Everyone! Aid me! We need to calm her down or else we may never know how to find out what is causing this!"

"Nyara, please heed us! Are all peoples of the sea of one mind? Do all merfolk know what each other do?
Do sahaugin share all their secrets with selkies? We do not know these ancient paths, but will find out who is disturbing them and stop them!"

Not having a non lethal way to strike at her from distance, Khord huff's in frustration. He will move back around the building, using it to block the wind until he has line of sight again (Y27). He will shout at the Shark Lady in pleading tones, aiding Benni, "If you would stop blasting us we could do something to help. Causing more destruction and mayhem will not bring your kinfolk back. Let calmer heads find a solution." (Aid Another/Diplomacy = 23, so +2 to Benni)

Luna is tumbled by the winds (Fly 17.) She takes a bit of damage and uses the run action to fly back toward Snark, being sure to move in a straight line.

Snark is also buffeted by the winds and is blown off the roof (Strength Check 4.) Fortunately, he is still flying, so he does not suffer any damage falling off the roof. He will stay where he is, hovering (Fly 26) just below the roof line.

The little greenmage has had enough. He shouts in common, "Awright everyone - I know we're trying to use the seven loves and all, but I think it's time for the eighth love - tufficus lovicus!

The challenges of wind and water keep Jasper from making progress toward the troubled Nyana. Feeling at a stalemate, the druid wracks her brain for some way to neutralize the oceanid without causing her bodily harm.

Benni, with Khord’s help, brings Nyana’s attitude down a notch, while Isaac considers forcibly soothing her into a non-violent state, but does not pursue this route.

The beautiful foam clad woman’s focus alternates between Khord and Benni, settling on the cleric , before speaking awkwardly in common. ”I am not a land dweller! I can not tell you what I do not know!. The fey’s voice hitches higher with emotion. ”The ley lines are being altered…worked…in an unskilled manner. They writhe and heave and threaten to rupture, disrupting the sea bed and wrecking destruction…”. Her pale brow furrows. ”If you and these land dwellers are not the ones sending the storms, how can you help?”

Snark , having been blown from the roof, is saved from harm by his ability to fly. He, and a slightly roughed up Luna take cover behind a building, ensuring they are out of Nyana’s sight line.

Having deposited Sheriff Eugene where he can make his way to safety, Beatrix flys low over the surface of the water in the most direct route possible, and gets close to the distraught oceanid. Tinkerbell finds refuge in her companion’s pack.

The oceanid’s attention is drawn to the sudden appearance of the flying centaur. Feeling threatened by the monstrous humanoid, Nyana thrusts. out her free hand and creates a 30 ft tall swirling column of water that envelopes Beatrix (hit CMD 26, for 26 HP bludgeoning damage). Fly check vs 20 to stay aloft. ”Come no closer!” she cries out in a shrill voice. The two sharks take up new positions.

Should Beatrix fall into the water, a swim check of 15 is required to stay afloat.

Onesimos grimaces as the ocean-fey slams Beatrix into the water where the sharks are. He has just got her talking and then aggressive moves by Bea and Snark are going to degenerate the situation. He tries and fails to move forward against the wind and water.

He tries one last time to get something meaningful from this disaster. "Show us where this line is and we will follow the line to stop the unskilled worker!"

"Now call off your friends, or we will have to defend ourselves and our town! We have not yet shown you our own power!"


Benni isn't kidding. He READIES his most powerful spell, Holy Smite, and will cast it (at point W,X 11,12) if Nyara or the sharks attack Beatrix.

Snark can see that Benni is still trying. So the creature he summons is a Lantern Archon (tried to summon 1d3, got 1.)

The little ball of light pops into existence by the gnome. He tells it, "Listen Sparkie, I got a problem child out there that we're trying to talk down. So first, I want you to cast Aid on me, and then try to tell that watery tart that we mean no harm. And don't do nothing threatening - she's nuttier than a squirrel turd, if you know what I mean." The Lantern Archon casts Aid on Snark, giving him 6 temporary hit points.

Snark thinks about this woman - what does he know about her kind? Strengths, weaknesses, abilities, that kind of stuff. (Knowledge Nature 32!)

Snark will move up, pulling out a healing potion from his pocket as he goes and drinks it. (rerolled a 1, so 7 points of healing.) He is flying. Luna flies into his pocket for safety.

The Lantern Archon moves up with Snark and says in it's chiming voice (truespeech,) "Oh wonderous being from the aquatic depths, I bring you greetings from the Celestial Realms. Please let reason reign here as we discuss our concerns in peace." (Diplomacy 24)

Jasper is anxious to help Beatrix who was unceremoniously knocked out of the sky by a waterspout, and casts Dispel Magic upon the oceanid. The foam clad woman does not have any magic's active on her person, so there is nothing to dismiss. However, the water spout collapses immediately after the centaur is tumbled into the water.

The sharks circle, but do not attack. Beatrix swim check vs 15 to be able to regain her mobility and fly out of the water.

Isaac moves in closer to those confronting the fey woman, while Khord holds his action in this inconclusive standoff between Nyana and the party, and a frustrated Benni gets testy. Holding his magicks in check, the elf demands the fey cease her attacks, and identify the path of the ley line she followed into Heranmar.

Nyana narrows her eyes, and looks menacingly at the Cleric of Flower, lifting her trident in his direction. ”That way! “ she says angrily, thrusting out with the trident for emphasis. Benni and anyone else who can see her, know without a doubt that she is pointing in the direction of the Abbey ruins.

Snark let’s his creation do most of the talking, while he does a quick mental review of what he knows about Nyana’s kind. The gnome obviously paid attention to what he read on Oceanids and didn’t just look at the pictures! Highlight to display spoiler: {He remembers that they are water dependant fey creatures with special spell-like abilities related to the manipulation of wind and water. They can speak with sea creatures. The mood of an oceanid can change with little warning - they are quick to love - or anger. They can be helpful to humans or formidable foes. Oceanids are vulnerable to fire, but fast healing}. The celestial orb of light is much more diplomatic than the diminutive wizard, and comes very close to improving Nyana’s mood with its flattering address.

However, the oceanid is still in a temper. ”The problem has been ignored for too long! You must stop the disturbances that are sent from the land, causing damage to the ocean deeps and threatening all who make it their home! It is time to do what is right!”. She opens her arms wide, shaking the trident angrily - but does not attack.

Everyone in or near the water note that it has receded from the streets, remaining deep only where the slope is steep near the town wall.

Onesimos breathes a sigh of relief. It is as he feared, and hoped: the Abbey is where they need to go with the green key. There, they will fix what has been wrong for so long. A voice, quiet but insistent makes him uneasy: what if the Luck Makers excursions ARE the disruption? But he pushes it down: the timing isn’t right: there must be another reason.

”We are the Luck Makers, and we will stop the disturbances. May we agree on a token of a wreath of flowers in the water so you may know we succeeded?”

Snark tucks away the info he recalls about the Oceanid in case she flips out again. Good to know she's vulnerable to fire.

He tells her, "Just take it down a notch there Nyana, we said we'd help. Don't screw this up now."

The Lantern Archon jumps in, "Nyana - your pursuit of your cause is noble and just. What the gnome means is that any further fight would only delay their ability to solve a problem that should indeed have been addressed long ago."

The gnome continues, "Awright, sounds like we need to go to that Abbey. Let's get after it then. Hey Nyana - you coming with us? Might let you use that anger against more than a bunch of defenseless villagers."

The gnome is ready to head to the creepy Abbey.

Khord, relieved that the Shark Lady has started to see wisdom and that the Luck Makers appear to have a course of action, will ease up out of his defensive stance and stow away his bow. No that the water has receded and the town seems to have avoided a watery attack, he will head to the Manor and retrieve Niko. All the while checking over his gear to make sure he has all he needs if they are headed off to the Abbey.

OOC: Sorry for short post and lack of action over the weekend, Friday and Saturday at Riot Fest in Chicago and it took longer to get home Sunday than anticipated.

Benni accepts responsibility to ‘make things right’ for the fey creature, and suggests some sort of signal. In response Nyana sweeps the arm holding the trident towards her body and across her chest. The water in front of the cleric recedes further, revealing a golden bell adorned with sigils. ”It may not be an easy task, land dweller. When you have discovered what has created these disturbances, and stopped them, come upon the water and ring this bell, and I will know that you have succeeded with your quest.”

Nyana gives Snark a dark look when the gnome suggests she join the party for an excursion to the Abbey. ”Your insolence and bravado will be your downfall, small one. You sound no more prepared to succeed on land, than you could ever possibly survive in the oceans.”. Then, signaling to her shark companions to follow her, the oceanid moves through the breach in the town’s stone wall, sinks into the water, and is gone.

Beatrix escapes the grasp of the turbulent water, and takes to the sky, making sure to keep well away from the fey creature.

Adrenaline pumping after the recent engagement, Jasper and Isaac want to set off immediately for the Abbey ruins.

Khord is anxious to retrieve Nikko.

The unnatural looking sky turns a more natural dull grey and a cold rain starts to fall. Several feet of water remains trapped behind the city wall. It is gradually seeping out through the gaps created by the storm surge. As the party watch, the breach widens as large rocks tumble from the weakened structure. The water pulls back further, revealing a litter of debris churned up from the ocean or dislodged from forgotten caches, spread in disarray across the dirty cobbles. Some displaced sea creatures skitter about the street.

”Help! Help! Can someone get me down!” can be heard coming from somewhere overhead.

Onesimos approaches the little, magical bell with trepidation: there are too many stories about magical bells doing really chaotic things in and around Heranmar to have him be altogether easy. Yet, it is a signal, and the cleric gingerly picks it up and places it in his belt pouch in token of assent.

Benni watches as Nyana takes her sharks and her business elsewhere. Heaving a sigh, he looks about the debris and hears the cry for help. He nods as Beatrix rises to look for the sound. Everyone is not effective in every encounter, he thinks. The centaur was great at the wreckers cave, but looks a little dejected at underperforming against Nyana's magic. The cleric will keep an ear out for her morale, too.

The elf begins to move to gather the Luck Makers, Sheriff Eugene, and the citizens of Heranmar to assist in organizing a clean-up crew. They will need to ensure Heranmar is at least moving to start rebuilding before they go to the Abbey: otherwise, people could have the perception that the Luck Makers are 'running away'.

"That's great. That little marine murderess shows up without so much as a how-do-you-do, tries to lay waste to the town, and wants to lecture me about insolence and bravado. Good riddance."

"Say Benni, how bout you use this wand to heal us up. Then we'll see what we can do to get the town squared away, and get to the Abbey in the morning."

Khord will let the townspeople inside Quendock Mansion know that the worst of the storm surge is over, and that much help is needed out near the docks. He will return outside with Niko in tow, the wolfhound giving some whimpering protests at being left alone with the townspeople. He takes a minute to look around at the destruction and is finally hit by a sense of loss.

He considers Jasper's desire to head to the Abbey in haste, and a lesson from Lars reminds him to not run blindly into an alley that you've not seen before. "Maybe we should help out a little bit. It might be best to head to the Abbey in the morning, with you casters topped of with all your magic. And I am anxious to see what kind of damage our new home has sustained."

Isaac just huffs "I have to agree with Snark she cold have asked for help a little more nicely. People that have such high and mighty attitudes need to eat a little Humble Pie." He strikes a pose with his hand against his head in fake distress "Oh I'm so superior and powerful. So grovel at my feet for I have taken the arduous task to ask you for help in saving me and my people." He sighs dropping the accent. "We better head out in the morning at least we'll be able to see then."
Isaac will ask the sheriff if the guard need any help to make any sort of emergency barricade for the hole.

The town has just suffered a not-so-natural disaster causing damage of monumental proportions including the destruction of the Port Gate, the breach of the town wall, and water damage to homes in the lower part of town - and that’s not counting what happened to the docks, warehouses, and fishing fleet. The storm surge is over, but the situation is far from resolved for the town or our heroes!

The ability of the town to deal with the situation is questionable. Benni, Isaac and Snark remember a time when the security of Heranmar was just the sheriff, 6 deputies, and a volunteer reserve called up in emergencies. Around the time of the Pirate Jack Lolly murders, the town council took the unprecedented action of establishing a permanent guard. They recruited some reservists interested in permanent work, and some newcomers. Khord remembers his friend Wren telling him how deputy Ned Green hired her on the spot noting her skill set. Unlike guards in Big Cities that were well organized and powerful entities, the Heranmar watch seemed a little green to her.

With no firmly established municipal government, but instead an ad hoc council assembled as needed to deal with administrative affairs, communication and decision making in Heranmar can be problematic. It is understandable how the community has come to depend of the adventurers, with their ability to get things done, during times of crisis!

Humbled by her perceived failure, Beatrix forgets that her heroic actions contributed to the saving of two lives.

Remembering the guard he left on the roof, Snark rescues the man. Despite his sodden clothing, he seems to be holding his own.

Jasper offers the gnome some life sustaining fruits, hoping the goodberries might be of use.

Benni picks up the bell revealed by the receding water. It looks like a ship’s bell - 11 inches high, 9 inches in diameter, and about 2 lbs. The golden bell is covered in sigils.

Khord notifies the folks inside Quendock Mansion that the worst of the storm is over. He finds a dishevelled Niko surrounded by children, and grateful to be reclaimed by his master.

Isaac finds Sheriff Eugene wrapped in a woollen blanket, his thinning hair plastered to his head, conferring with Deputy Green. He turns at the paladin’s approach, and responds: ”Why, yes! I’ve got just the job for you.”

A soft rain continues to fall. Cloaks are sufficient to protect most folks from the droplets, however Benni, Jasper and Beatrix have all been submerged in water at least up to their chests and are soaked to the bone. (Fortitude save bs DC 15 or take 1d6 = 3 non lethal damage and start to succumb to hypothermia -2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity)

Onesimos reassesses his plan: the bell is a lot bigger than he thought! Instead of pocketing it (he doesn't have a pocket large enough), he simply carries it back to Luck Makers House and places it on the mantlepiece above the living area fire.

He thanks Snark for the wand offer, but declines. "I can channel healing which is daily renewed, so we can keep the wand for an emergency." Gathering his friends, he sends a burst of healing. Throughout the day, he does the same when he finds others wounded or hurting, providing energy channels, or a calming touch.

While Benni agrees that a day or even two wouldn't be a problem before going to the Abbey, he doesn't like the conclusions that some of his friends are coming to. He almost expects it from Snark, but Isaac has usually been stalwart in understanding. But Benni seldom confronts people directly, preferring them to at least consider another story.

"I believe we would have done exactly as Nyana did had our positions been reversed. There is a story of Philautia whose town had been raided by orcs and her companions tracked them down to a cave. They did not ask questions when finding orcs. It did not matter that the first group they found was not the tribe that attacked, and the first group could even help Philautia in finding the right ones further in the cave. No. Their self-righteousness became selfish hubris, discounting other people's thoughts and feelings, and led to the path of Marteus.

"I believe Nyana did not create the wave, she only followed it as far as she could to its source. And thinking someone in pain should 'ask nicely' is only thinking of ourselves."

On his way back to the Lucky House, Khord will try to track down Wren. He wants to make sure she made it through the surge unharmed and generally make sure she is alright. Now that Lars is gone, he feels responsible for keeping an eye on her.

Once he has been home and seen that it is alright, he will venture out into town and help with the clean up. After a long and eventful day, he will throw himself on his bed and fall in to a deep slumber, with Niko taking the opportunity to jump up there with him and snuggle in as best he can.

Then Benni tries to explain Nyana's actions, which is a little too much for the gnome.

"Now hold it right there Benni. You're sayin we all woulda done what Nyana did? I can promise you if someone wrecked my house, I wouldn't lay waste to a nearby town when I didn't even know what was going on. So, no, I would not have behaved that way, and I don't think you would have either.

"Too bad about them orcs I guess. But Philautia and her friends were jerks, just like Nyana. And being in pain doesn't mean you get to be a jerk. That's what makes good folk different, right? We try to work out our differences without bein' a jerk.

"That'd be a good love to add to the list - notjerk. I'm going with notjerk."

Folks who spent time in the water find the fortitude to withstand the cold of their wet clothing. Snark employs a simple cantrip to warm up some people. It’s not enough to dry a whole outfit, but should be enough to keep them from harm until they can change into something warm and dry.

Benni is generous with Flower’s blessings, and earns the high regard of many in the community as he tends to hurts both physical and mental.

Isaac gets a mission from the sheriff. He needs someone to provide security for Rap Goodfellow and accompany him to the Quarry and dwarvain encampment outside of town. The councillor will present the town’s request for labour and supplies. The paladin will act as his guard. Isaac should be back before dark.

Khord helps some of the homeowners remove spoiled goods from their flooded homes. Fortunately, or unfortunately, most living in the lower part of town are too poor to own much, so it is mostly sodden mattresses and some spoiled food.

The Quendock Mansion empties as most of the refugees head home, or accompany friends and family who can provide a safe place for the night. A few families are assigned the ‘fancy’ rooms on the top floor of the castle like structure, and Ralphus and Ginifred open up the Inn and tavern.

As the rain turns to drizzle, and night descends, Isaac rejoins his companions. The group make their way home to Luck Makers House with Beatrix leading the way. They discuss Nyana’s actions and motivations. The paladin dismisses the oceanid as a prima donna, however Benni defends her, finding a parallel in a rather gory story of Love with a moral flaw and a band of orcs. Jasper understands the fey’s distress and sides with Benni, while Snark believes he would have behaved better if he found himself in a similar situation.

Khord follows behind, Nikko at his heel. As he trails after his companions, the exhausted half-orc is intercepted by his young friend Wren, who greets him with her usual playful punch in the bicep and engaging grin. ”Deputy Green sent me. Now that councillor Goodfellow is back from the quarry, there’s going to be a council meeting so there’s a plan on how to go about the recovery. Sheriff’s going to ask for ‘special permissions’ for you-all. It’s too dark to see well, but when the Luck Makers arrive home there is a magical light at the front door, and it doesn’t appear that their home suffered any damage. Some folks head directly to their rooms, while others raid the kitchen. Cozy beds await, and for the intrepid a visit to the bathhouse out back. Onesimos is tired after a long day at work recovering Heranmar. The elf doesn't have a lot of community skills other than his storytelling and basketweaving, which was probably of little use, but he did have two good hands and a fairly strong back.

In the evening, he also looks to have one-on-one time with Snark, and Beatrix, and Isaac; checking up on their emotions and making sure there has been no lasting harm on a disagreement or feelings of value. Benni knows that for all his learning and hope of wisdom, that he is only mortal and makes as many mistakes as anyone else.

In the morning, the elf is woken by the lovely smells from the kitchen. He pads down in his loose sleepwear and splashes some water over his face and hands from the backyard pump before applauding Maggie for taking such good care of the whole team!

I've not ate so well since I was under my own mothers roof." He goes to the table and greets the other Luck Makers good morning.

"Well, are we ready for another ho-hum, no big deal day in Heranmar. When I talked to my friend Wren yesterday she mentioned a meeting of the council last night and that they would be wanting to talk to us this morning."

Snark is relieved to see that the Luck Makers' house suffered no ill effects from the wave. He's happy to get cleaned up and crawl into his nice, new bed!

In the morning, he rises to the smells of good things. He'll get dressed and hurry down to thank Maggie. As he does he pulls out a ring on a leather cord that has Continual Flame cast on it. "I got something for you Maggie to make your work just a little bit easier. Seems like you sometimes come and go when it's dark. This is a magic light that will never go out and can't never burn you. Thanks for doing such a great job looking after us. Were your kids alright, and your house?"

Later when Benni checks in with the gnome, Snark is glad. "No sweat there Benni. Sorry if I came across a little strong. I appreciate you always seeing the good folks. It sure worked out this time."

Once the luck makes are all gathered, Snark says, "I got the key to the Abbey. I was hoping Olostim mighta' come to town to check on folks. If he ain't here, maybe we oughta check on him, both to make sure he's alright, and to see if his research into the Abbey has turned up anything that could help us."

Snark is happy to ride out to the light house to see Olostim by himself if need be, and then to proceed to the Abbey, key in hand.

Isaac waits until the Bath house is clear to go and take his own well deserved bath. Taking a minute to just soak and relax after the hard hike he had to take outside of town and the stress of the fight. After getting dress and having breakfast (He loves the cinnamon rolls) he prepares to go meet with the council.

Fully recovered from the exertions of the previous day, our heroes eventually find their way to the breakfast table, lured by the delicious smells of Maggie’s baking. Jasper pours herself a cup of coffee, while Isaac and Khord get into the cinnamon rolls.

The housekeeper blushes at the compliments, and seems a little overwhelmed when Snark gifts her with his magical ring of Continual Flame. She puts the cord ‘round her neck, tucking the ring into her bodice. Benni notes she is wearing the odd straw headdress he created for her the previous week.

When Beatrix arrives, a new pan of rolls is pulled from the bread oven and set upon the table. As the party tucks into breakfast, Maggie chatters on about the storm, and what she’s heard about the damage sustained to the lower part of town. ”Never saw, nor heard of the like! Storms happen come fall, but this one’s early. Maybe it’s just us being unlucky?” The woman makes a warding sign taping first one shoulder, then the other, than her forehead. From what she says, you gather she has no knowledge of the supernatural provenance of the storm, nor the appearance of the fey creature that followed in its wake.

Snark mentions he’s got the green jade key in his possession, and that he’s interested in following up with the wizard living in the lighthouse to see if he’s okay and if he’s had an opportunity to learn anything from the journal and chest full of documents he collected the previous day. The gnome thinks he’ll check for Olostim in town, before paying a call on the lighthouse.

Khord tells his friends about his encounter with Wren, and the news that the town council would like to talk to them. Isaac is keen to meet with the council members.

The golden ship’s bell decorated with sigils sits on the mantelpiece over the fire place in the common room where Benni placed it, next to the telescope found amongst Virkas’ effects in the cave the wrecker’s used.

Owing to Beatrix sleeping in (all HP restored) it’s late in the morning, and the party better get moving if they’re going to meet with the councillors.

Onesimos is in a good mood. Everyone is here, the place is beginning to look like a home and part of the community. The cleric notes Maggie doesn't know, and wonders if telling too much would cause her more worries, not less. He settles on a matter-of-fact, "something magical going on, and we have to finish quick to see how we can help at the Council meeting this morning."

"And I think that is a great idea to ensure the lighthouse wasn't damaged and seeing if Olostim has any insight for us before using that Jade Key."
Benni himself also plans to buy a few mundane items at the market for an Abbey excursion.

A dash upstairs to get on clothes, settle his wicker woven High Woldian symbol on his neck and StarKnife at his side, he looks to ensure everyone who is going to the Council is present before setting a quick pace to the Quendock Mansion.

Benni dashes up to his room to change out of his sleeping garments and into something more appropriate. Jasper smoothes her hair into a neat braid, and Snark makes sure he is presentable. Beatrix fortifies herself with a pan of cinnamon sticky buns. Khord downs the last of his coffee, and follows his friends out the door of Luck Makers House. It’s time to meet with the town council!

Isaac leads the way to Quendock Mansion trying to gauge the morale of the locals. There is the usual fiddling with talismans or warding signs, and he picks up some grumbling and references to ‘bad luck’, but in general the morale is much as it usually is. Any gloominess could be attributed to the damage done to the lower part of town, or perhaps the overcast sky. No one seems to be avoiding the group - and in fact a few folks nod and greet them and wish them ‘good luck’ with their day.

The double doors to the mansion are propped open, and there are folks entering and exiting. As the party enter, they cross Frank Cinderman, the mason on his way out. ”Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to see you all later on!” he says cryptically, depressing one eyelid in a slow wink.

Any meeting that was happening seems to have already occurred, though the First Daughter of the Crones (Honoria) is still in the chamber. She’s in conversation with the old gifted one - Gendry, known for his ability to forecast weather. The table at which the council normally sits is occupied by Miles from the WLA stall. The elf has a pained expression on his face and is busy sorting papers on the table. Akoka sits beside him, and seems to have been tasked with sharpening pencils with a small silver knife.

Ned Green rushes to greet the party. ”Sheriff Eugene wanted to be here, but he’s got a case of the sniffles. Nothing serious though. He’s mighty grateful for the rescue yesterday, and he wanted me to give you these.”. The deputy hands out pin badges that look like the towers that flank the gates of Heranmar. The gate passage creates a bar across the middle forming the letter H. ”This is the insignia of the volunteer reserve we used to have before the guard was made permanent. Seems we still need a special team we can call on. Show this to the guards on duty, and they’ll let you up on the wall.”

Ned continues: ”I hope the town can count on you for help with the rebuilding. Miles can sign you up. 2 silver for a day’s work?! he adds hopefully, before going on to explain: ”The quarry sent supplies to help with the rebuilding, but said they couldn’t spare any bodies for labour! Only ‘that one’ came with the wagon carrying the supplies.” The deputy gestures in the direction of a dark skinned dwarf with a halo of curly dark hair. She is carrying what looks like a huge hammer with a long handle, and is standing a short distance from the table, waiting for the elf sitting behind it to notice her.

"Hi you guys!" says the smiling dwarf. She is sporting a huge mane of black hair, but no beard. She is wearing mithril and an assortment of jewelry. Her huge flaming two-handed hammer has weird runes all over it.

"I'm Urist, come with the other dwarves who are at the quarry. They heard about you guys having needs, and they said they would send everything they never needed back. So I'm here to work!"

"I'm a WLA member. I'm also a trained architect, mason, carpenter, smith, and sculptor. I know some magic and some tunes. And I honor Flower, patron of the arts."

"And I have plans for the future. Some day I'll be an officer in the League. As you can imagine, officers have a certain amount of authority. So to celebrate, I plan to go to a bar and order everyone around!"

Beatrix is bemused by being offered sort of deputy status. She seems to be ascending to a place of authority/responsibility quickly and for all the wrong reason. Still maybe this will help her get more known for the right reason. She'll of course volunteer to help with the repairs with her prodigious strength, but she'll also mention her career choice and efforts to provide an education to the towns children and hint that she'd appreciate if they could make things a bit more official and/or let her coordinate with the locals who teach the kids.

Onesimos is a thin, pale elf with summer-sky eyes and long brown hair bound with a fragile-looking diadem. His simple clothes sport a wild flowers motif along the hems. Besides a StarKnife, today he only has his new "H" badge and WLA badge pinned to one shoulder, and a willow-wythe High Woldian symbol for Flower on a simple cord about his neck.

Benni smiles, "And now we are two. By Flower's Seven Loves, I welcome you in our temporary time in the Wold. I am Oh-NESS-ee-muss, but if we are working together, I suppose 'Benni' is easier."

"Miles, Akoka, good morning. I would also like to sign up to help Heranmar, but it looks like we can be of greater assistance by finding out what in the Haunted Abbey caused the monstrous wave. We have it on good authority that the source of the wave was actually there."

Jasper doesn't know what the "WLA" is, but it sounds impressive! As does Urist's list of accomplishments. By branch and root, she thinks. How did I fall in with such learned people?

She takes the badge and affixes it to her cloak, but feels mounting dismay that the team is being pressed into a public works project when there are clearly bigger problems at the Abbey. Normally she'd be happy to help, but now is certainly not the time.

She turns to Miles and Akoka. "If we don't sort this now, we'll be subject to still more mischief. I'd rather not rebuild, only to be laid low once again by whatever haunts that place."

She then smiles at Urist. "Well met. I'm Jasper. I'd love that round when we get back. Maybe you can put that hammer to work with us? If the mess we faced last night is any indicator, we'll need all the help we can get."

Jasper is a half-elf druid woman with long, wild, silvery hair that is (for once) smoothed back in a neat braid. She has pale skin, a wiry build, and leaf-green eyes. Her expression is mild and her voice is quiet and a little hoarse. Naturally shy, she opens up around her friends, particularly Benni, Snark, and Khord and his dog, Niko, who she would spoil rotten if she could.

Khord accepts the badge Ned with the proper respect, and attaches it to his coat under his cloak. He however does agree with Jasper's assessment that the rebuilding should be a secondary concern to finding the cause of the destruction. "I think Jasper has the right of it, I will be happy to toil for weeks on the walls once we have the threat from the Abbey quelled."

Khord is a study in contrasts, he is a well groomed half-orc who is tall but wiry, not having the bulk of most of the others of his kind. He wears fine mithral chain under a grey coat and dark green cloak that show the signs of heavy use. He wears fine boots that show elven craftsmanship, and has a pair of shortswords that hang at his waist that show the utilitarian metal work of the humans of the northern continent. he is covered in pockets, pouches, as well as a fine quiver but no visible bow.

Trapsing along, tall wagging, is a massive wolfhound. Bulging muscles move below his shaggy fur, but his eyes are bright and playful. Niko sniffs about the mansion and he nudges Ned as he tries to give Khord his badge.

Khord takes in the sight of the dark skinned dwarf, "Well met, Urist. That is an impressive hammer you carry. We could surely put it to use as we try to find the reason for the needed repairs." And he looks around to his fellow Luck Makers to gauge their feelings about which task to take on first.

Snark takes the pin and pins it on himself. "Hey thanks Ned, and please convey my thanks to the Sheriff for this honor! I'd be happy to lend my carpentry and magic skills to the rebuilding, but like Benni said we gotta go deal with something at the Abbey first."

As Urist steps up and introduces herself, Snark reaches up to shake her hand. The little gnome is just over 3' tall. He has tan skin with pale blue hair and beard. Dressed in a long, green coat trimmed in yellow that goes to his knees over brown pants, he carriers a small staff made of smooth driftwood and capped by a smooth, blue river stone. Did the swirl in that stone just move? Looking at it directly it's clearly just an opaque stone - but you could have sworn you saw a swirling motion to it.

"Hi Urist, I'm Snark Riverstone, studying to be a greenmage.

"You're a follower of Flower, eh? Benni's been teaching us all about Flower's love. And nothing says love like a giant flaming hammer of death. I'm pleased to meet you.

"Say, we gotta go deal with some stuff at the Abbey. Maybe you can come with us? We could probably use a hand. And a giant flaming hammer of death."

Urist bows low when Onesimos is so welcoming. "Oh, I'm not one to take the easier path, Brother Onesimos," she says, smiling back. "I feel super lucky to meet a fellow Flower child here! I know a tune about seven loves, but I'm not sure they're the same ones of which you speak. That's more of a tavern song and less of a temple song, if you get my drift."

When Jasper calls for a round, Urist grins like crazy and declares, "No time like the present!" She takes barrel of ale out of a bag of holding and a clay mug for everybody (including Mistress Honoria). As she passes around mugs of ale, she proposes a toast. "To Dame Fortune; may she smile upon you.
May you never meet her daughter, Miss Fortune!"


Wiping her mouth after draining her mug in one go, Urist tells Jasper, "And of course I am happy to lend a hand, and a hammer, wherever I am needed!"

"Also, I love your hair! I can never get mine to do that!"

Khord mentions her maul -- the giant hammer -- and Urist looks bashful. "This old thing? It's really not that special. I just souped it up to look good."

Snark comments that "nothing says love like a giant flaming hammer of death," and Urist laughs out loud. "Master Snark, I see that you are well named! But in truth, I'm more into Flower's love of art rather than her love of ... love. I used to be more into love. In fact, I fell hard for a pastry chef. But be desserted me."

The half-elf stands just shy of 6 feet in height with a mop of blond unruly hair and blue eyes. ”Welcome to Heranmar. I’m Isaac. These are the rest of the Luck Makers”. He waves his arm to point out his companions. ”We’ve been kinda adopted by the town and help out with problems the guards alone can’t solve.

The Luck Makers accept the pins handed out by the deputy on behalf of the town, and add the insignia of the Heranmar Volunteer Reservists to their individual collections of regalia.

Being part of a work crew assigned to repairing Heranmar’s defences holds little appeal when compared to the temptation of the mysterious Abbey ruins. However, without a firm agenda, the group pause to consider what else is going on and note the newcomer.

Urist isn’t shy, and volunteers she has skills relevant to the town’s needs, but she also confesses to having some pretty big dreams.

Beatrix has dreams as well, but the Heranmar school year hasn’t started and the centaur hasn’t yet learned who’s in charge.

Isaac and Benni introduce themselves to the newcomer, and Jasper, Snark, and Khord make a suggestion that she might find a better use for her maul than toiling on a work crew.

At the mention of the Woldian League of Adventurers (WLA), Miles leans back tipping his chair on it’s back legs, and opens his mouth about to say something, when there is a crack, and a white faced Akoka looks up, a piece of a broken pencil held in each hand. ”You must excuse me” she mumbles apologetically, and then without making further eye contact, jumps up from her chair and flees the chamber.

Miles looks at Benni and then the others gathered in front of the table ”it’s the talk about the Abbey. She says she doesn’t remember anything…but sometimes I wonder. I’ve been looking through some of the papers back at the office…”. The elf’s voice drifts off as his gaze becomes distant. Then, with a shake of his head he asks: “so, it’s off to the ruins then. Do you have a plan?”

Beatrix is aware that she doesn't know whose in charge of the local education system which is part of why she brought it up but if no one cares to answer then she'll drop it. She has no plan about the ruins but is rather interested in exploring them. Benni has to chortle: Urist is a completely different type of worshipper of Flower, which upon reflection is exactly what the town needs to demonstrate the many aspects of love! Although he politely declines the beer.

With the Council meeting already over, Onesimos has to pause a moment and looks at Jasper. "Did we never tell you about the Woldian League of Adventurers? I am behind my duties! In short it is a large but dispersed group of good heroes who have pledged to make the Wold a better place. We collect information and receive special training that all helps to make that pledge more of a reality."

He feels embarrassed about bringing more pain to Akoka, but the scene does give an opening... "A plan, Miles? I was thinking the Luck Makers would ask you if you have found any information on the Abbey. Then go to the lighthouse and see if old Olostim is all right from the wave and if he has learned anything from the papers collected. Then stock up for a week and use that Green Key that Snark has to find out who is playing with the magic in the Abbey. Then stop them."

Her expression turns grim as she watches Akoka leave. She wants to offer comfort but knows that sometimes it's best not to push. Instead, she says, "Miles, what did the papers say?"

When Beatrix introduces herself, Urist nods and smiles.

Urist looks extremely gratified when Benni "chortles." She had feared her new comrades had no sense of humor! "What do you like to drink, my new friend? I'll be sure to stock it in my Handbag of Holding."

But when she hears the cleric explaining about the WLA, she gets serious. "Honestly, it is the best darn organization in the whole Wold! At least, it is if you are a hero, and I bet everyone here is. I'd love to talk about it with you anytime, Jasper!" She looks extraordinarily pleased that Onesimos and Isaac are members. She notes that something is up with the WLA official, Miles -- is that his? her? name? -- and vows silently to follow up later.

Urist grins at Khord's compliment. "I had a boyfriend who worked at a zoo once," the dwarf adds. "He was a real keeper, too!"

Urist listens carefully without comprehending the plan. But she figures she can tag along, and hopefully it will come clear.

”Sounds like a good plan. Seems like we’ve been floundering about the abbey for some time. I hope that Wizard in the lighthouse has figured out what’s going on with that place.”. He looks over at Urist with a wry smile, ”Funny one…a real keeper! What about you? Interested in having a look see through the Abbey? You look plenty tough. I warn you though, the place has an evil about it that can’t be denied and at least one party of adventurers has met a sorry end there.”

It’s Urists’s lucky day! She’s found people appreciative of her skills, abilities, and sense of humour - something that had been missing back at the quarry. The fact that some of them are members of the WLA is an added bonus. That, and they want her to tag along with them when they execute their plan to investigate a haunted Abbey.

There is a short discussion about the WLA, and Jasper is interested. However, the druid is much more interested in the Abbey, and concurs with Benni when he outlines ‘the plan’. Snark agrees to the plan, and asks if Olostim has been seen in town.

Beatrix, Isaac and Khord acknowledge the dwarven newcomer, and wait for Miles to share what he knows about the ruins. Niko had been getting some covert attention from Deputy Ned, before being called by the ranger, but attends to his master’s summons.

Miles changes position, and the front legs of the chair come down. The lightly tanned elf with long blonde hair, and dark eyes rests his hands on the table, and leans forward. “I’ve only been in Heranmar for a couple of months, and before me it was Akoka, and you know her story, right?” He looks at each member of the group, before continuing ”The WLA didn’t have a presence in Heranmar, but something about the place and the Abbey piqued interest at headquarters, and they sponsored an adventuring group to investigate.. Nobody knows what happened to the party, leastways Akoka. She was the only one to come out. Gravely wounded and in deep shock. When she regained speech, it was like her mind was affected. You know what she’s like.” The WLA official reaches out one long fingered hand, and starts lining up the pencils in a neat row, before continuing. ”I’ve been asking around…making notes, but it’s hard to tell what’s fact and what’s fiction. Old Reshakka doesn’t know much, and her memory…” Miles shrugs ” I can’t corroborate anything she said. Same with the Daughter of the Crones…hard to make out what she means half the time. The rest of them…well” the elf reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small grey pebble with a swirl of green through it, and places it on the table, next to the pencils. In a low voice so only you can hear he adds ”you know about their superstitious nonsense? They believe pebbles from the Abbey are talismans that will bring them luck.”

Miles pushes himself to a standing position, and starts to collect the papers and pencils from the table. “Well, I’m done here. Volunteered to help with the paperwork involved with signing up workers for the crews doing repairs. How about I go through my papers back at the WLA office and meet up with you at the Blue Cat tonight? I heard the kitchen is trying something new, and I’ve agreed to bring my lute to provide entertainment.”

Most of the people who were in the main chamber of the mansion have cleared out, and Miles and those few stragglers still around inform Snark they haven’t seen Olostim.

The time of day would be about noon, with 5 or 6 hours before dinner and 7 hours before sunset.

Onesimos nods, he has heard it all before, but it was good for Khord, Jasper, Beatrix, and Urist to get the story from a third party. "Then we have enough time to get to Olostim's Lighthouse, talk, and be back to the Blue Cat by dinner. Let's go!"

Head nods and arm waves to the other Luck Makers, the elf steps beside Urist to lead her to the team's house. "I need a couple minutes to gather my walking stuff. The town recently gifted us an abandoned house for our headquarters for our help, and I left most of my adventuring gear there." The cleric assumes that if Urist was with that group of dwarves recently off the ship and right to the quarry, she probably doesn't know much about the town itself. He points out this and that from the Mansion, the Lucky Pond, the Trade House, the Sanctuary of the Sea, and then Luck Makers House.

"For Akoka, she is horribly untidy. Every time we tried to get the WLA booth in order, it was worse than before in less than a day. Old Reshakka is the liontaur cleric caretaker of the Sanctuary, quite friendly but very, very old. The Daughter of the Crones I haven't spoken with... she gives me the willies."

Once there, Benni gets his breastplate, buckler shield, morningstar, and backpack of adventure do-dads before ready to walk to the south gate and the shoreline to the Lighthouse.

Beatrix is quick to deny any accusations of being a hero or adventurer. "I'm a schoolteacher. I teach little children their letters, math, and history. I've just been sort of grouped up with everyone cause I helped on a job."

She hesitates. "Not that I'm saying I don't want to see the abbey or won't help. I mean it's got such historical significance. The Chaos Bell was destroyed there you know. And it'll probably involve a really good fight..." she trails off and looks embarrassed.

She does look more like a teacher then a warrior. She's a dark skinned, dappled grey centaur with a slender, if athletic build and has a pair of reading glasses. She wears a fairly plain blue shirt and horseblanket both covered in pockets filled to the brim with papers, books, quills, ink, and other things a scholar or teacher might need. Still there's a suspicious lump under the load of books and things that might indicate the presence of a large weapon and she seems very fit for a schoolteacher, though it's hidden somewhat under the baggy pocket covered outfit.

Speaking of school teaching Beatrix will spend the afternoon alternating between dealing with the gaggle of kids who approach her through the day, working on some of her own projects for future lessons, and getting to know the newcomer. She dabbles in crafting herself, though seems embarrassed to admit she mostly makes weapons. "It's a hobby ok?" she says defensively.

Snark pulls out the green Abbey key from his pocket and looks at it for a moment before putting it back.

He will go with the others to the house. He says to Urist, "You know, we got a couple extra rooms here. You could prolly bunk in one until you figure out what your doing, or maybe longer if yer riding with us. Also, since you're a wizard and all, I'm happy to share my spellbook with you if I happen to have any spells you lack." (Feel free to peruse the spells tab on my character sheet if there are any spells you need.)

Snark will conjure a pony to ride out to the lighthouse. He keeps a sharp eye out for trouble, and also looks for signs of the damaging wave that hit the town. (Perception 19)

As we approach the lighthouse, he is especially careful. He will knock on the door of his friend, and will greet Olostim and tell him what happened to the town.

Khord blushes a little as Urist jabs back at him about his comment, "A keeper, Oh I see..."

As the course of action has been decided, he will head to the stables and rent a pony again. promising to bring her back before sundown. he will rally with the rest of the Luck Makers at Lucky House and ride out, with Niko lopping along at his side.

Well, Urist actually does not know what Akoka is like, or who Old Reshakka might be, so she stays quiet and just listens to the WLA rep, not even tempted to crack wise.

But when Snark offers a room and a look at his spell book, well, that kind of hospitality she understands! "I accept! This is wonderful, thank you, Snark! You are so sweet! And a saint! You're almost as sweet as my favorite saint."

Urist pauses for a moment.

"St. Rawberry."

Later, when Beatrix shows off her crafting, Urist is honestly very happy and encouraging. "Making weapons is an art," she tells her fellow crafter. "Me, I like sculpting." She shows off her latest work, which she carries around with her. Urist takes out a tiny thing and magically unshrinks it. Suddenly it is 2 ft x 2 ft x 4 ft block of stone. Urist shows her technique -- Stone Shape spell to get the piece in the right general form, then hammer and chisel for the fine details. It looks like this one is going to be a golden retriever with a unicorn horn. After she makes some progress, she casts Shrink Item on it and puts it in her pocket.

When Urist sees Khord blush, she elbows him in the side and says, "Nah, man, I'm just joshing ya! No worries, my new friend! I don't really have a boyfriend. I'm on the market!"

Whether that sets him more at ease or makes his blush deepen, well, we'll see.
