The Challenge

the game is afoot -DMBZ
Wednesday September 6th, 2023 8:20:17 AM

Zolbur responds with sincerity to Burton's query. Well, I've only met Ardreth, he was the one who delivered the information to me about the sale. I know he has a boss but I'm not sure who it is.

Fingers asks about the other building. Zolbur knows they have a warehouse, and can give its' location. He doesn't know of any other locations they own, but he feels there probably are some.

Many of the team give their chips to Rhys to play up big bets. Upon hitting the gaming floor once again, asking around reveals a well dressed elf making large bets can be found frequently at the lucky spinner game.

As you approach the lucky spinner game, you do find a well dressed male elf. For those who are aware of it, he is wearing some of the latest fashion in the wealthy circles. As you approach, you can hear him say; Oh look I've won again. Must be my lucky day. Some of the other patrons leave the game, leaving only the elf and an old acquaintance, Jehanne, one of the leaders of the Mining Guild. (Jehanne is a female elf specializing in contracts mining for gems) Hmmm he says, I wonder if anyone else would like to play with me?

Ardreth bets 50 gold on the next spin, betting on 'odd'

Paige and Zarsellet look around for Walid. He isn't tough to find as he stands out a bit in the crowd due to his plain nature. You see him at the twenty-one table, but he mostly just watches the game, and only occasionally places a bet..

Ovius donates his chips to Rhys, then hits the gaming floor.

Kwarsk keeps a watchful eye. A few of the bouncers notice and give him a nod in thanks.

The other games are also open, and there are many servers with various drinks and refreshments working the crowd. If asked, they will promptly return with specific requests. You can observe many patrons gambling here now, as the crowd seems to be reaching its' peak. Some very well dressed nobles are enjoying the games at the various tables, and the betting chips are flowing freely. You can spot several people you know in the crowd, people you've met from the neighborhood. It also seems like most of the Mining Guild managers are here tonight.

Burton will also add his chips to the party cash with Rhys (100gp). He will then head back to the gaming floor and circulate but attempting to show no obvious connection with the other Patchers. He will move to a position where he can discreetly watch the table where Ardreth & Rhys are.

As he and Paige approach Walid, (with a glass of white wine) Zarsellet considers how 'he' should approach. Let Paige do all of the talking? Nah! He's a Bard after all. "Walid I assume? I'm Zarsellet Fahring, occasional musician and Paige's friend. Any chance you could spare a couple of minutes?"

Paige collects two glasses of milk from a passing server as she trails behind Zarsellet , who has zeroed in on Walid watching folks play 21. When the introductions are completed, she shoves one of the glasses of milk into the ex-thief’s hand. ”This is good for you. Helps with the development of strong bones.”.

The cleric moves to stand beside the ex-thief, and speaks quietly: ”I might be in a position to help you and the orphans out financially if this next job I’m working on with my friends goes well. Paige pauses, and studies her drink, before continuing: ”So, I’m hoping you can help me out and tell me what you know about Pyramid Industries.…”. (Diplomacy = 24) Paige will wait in attentive silence for Walid to respond (Perception = 11) in an attempt to gauge the man’s feelings about what he divulges.

Burton positions himself in a good spot for observing. There is a lot of movement in the crowd, but he is able to keep an eye on the lucky spinner table.

Fingers keeps a close watch on the game, but does not observe any cheating, yet.

Kwarsk looks around for those who may be taking a special interest in Ardreth. He does spot a human male who seems to be well armed carefully observing the game.

Ovius joins the table but his comment does not seem to phase the elf. Oh, I'm sorry, were you speaking to me?

Rhys matches the bet and takes a chance that the elf knows what he is doing. The spin completes and lands on '15'. Odd wins! and pays out 100 gp each to Ardreth and Rhys. Hmmm, not much challenge betting with me, I suppose. Shall we try again? This time let's place opposite bets. You can pick first. Ardreth counts 100 gp worth of chips and waits to wager on either odd or even after Rhys picks.

Walid greets Zarsellet warmly. Ah, of course! Any friend of Paige and all that. So what can I do for you?

Walid accepts the glass of white gold from Paige. Yes, you are correct. It's a good beverage, especially chilled. Walid considers her question for a moment. Well, I don't think I've ever heard of it. I can ask the kids to keep an ear for it though, they're pretty good at gathering information. Do you think it's trouble?

”Thanks anyway, Walid”, Paige says ”I’d rather leave the kids out of it, you know?”. The cleric winces when Zarsellet makes his quip about ‘the poor and the children.’ ”Well, see you ‘round the quarter , Walid.” The half elf nods at the man, and continues to make her way around the perimeter of the room.

”There are an awful lot of managers from the Mining Guild here tonight” the red-head says to her companion, nodding at a few of them in order to identify them to Zarsellet. ” I don’t want to bother Jehanne, or anyone involved in a game, but the rest are fair game. Let’s see what’s got them out for a night on the town, eh?”

Hopefully, Paige can spot a manager type from the Mining Guild who is looking bored or in need of company, and isn’t involved in any of the games. (Perception = 25)

Ardreth places 100 gp on 'even' and waits for the spin. Jehanne declines to bet, but watches the game with amusement.

The roll comes up...... and lands on 2.

Ardreth seems pleased. Well it is as expected. Care to try again? He nods at Ovius. You can let your friend pick for you, and bet first again. Odd or even? Ardreth prepares another 100gp worth of chips and bets opposite Rhys again.

So far, the observations have not turned up any sign of cheating. Zolbur's employee, a girl with the name tag that says 'Heather' seems to be running a fair game.

The meeting with Walid wraps up, as it seems he is none the wiser for what is going on.

Kwarsk continues to observe the observer. The man remains focused on the game, and seems to be watching Rhys and Ovius closely.

Paige looks around, and can pick out all the previously met Mining Guild leaders. (listed below for reference) They seem to be gaming, eating and drinking and having a good time.

The crowd overall seems to be in a good mood. And the bouncers are watchful but relaxed. Food and drink is offered to anyone who asks for it. If it wasn't for the information you got from Zolbur, you wouldn't know anything is amiss.

OOC:
Boris and Doris - these dwarven siblings work for the Mining Guild, their focus is on future sustained operations

Moreth- this male human is in charge of security at the Mining Guild, he is fit and in his fighting prime

Jehanne- this female elf is specialized in acquiring contracts for mining gems for the Mining Guild

Novak- this male gnome enjoys trickery and deception and he is frequently employed by the Mining Guild to make or look over official agreements.

Jocelyn- this human woman has the appearance of having worked for what she has attained. She is the daughter of one of the former guildmasters and grew up essentially in the family business. She is very knowledgeable in all aspects and dangers of mining. She is essentially ‘in charge’ of the Mining Guild

Zarsellet notices Paige's reaction when he replied to Walid. He hadn't thought it was a mistake, but maybe he missed something? He nods agreement to checking out the gamblers. "I don't know many of the miners, but.... Hmm. A fellow gnome? Worth a couple of minutes to check?"

Before walking over to Novak he asks Paige, "When you say leave the kids out of it? You know a lot of the kids of this city are 'helpers' of various business ventures. They earn a little coin for their families doing simple things hidden in plain site from authorities. Most of them are innocent. And many of them know me, a little, 'cause I hang out with them. My size helps me fit in. What's wrong with asking some questions of them? I'd never use any of them, but they might know something that adults in the area wouldn't."

He doesn't wait for an answer, rather moves through the crowd toward Novak. He snags a fresh glass of white wine on the way. "Hi! You're Novak right? I'm Zarsellet. Not a lot of gnomes working with the mining guild are there? How'd you do at the tables? I had a run of bad luck myself. Debating whether or not to dig in to emergency coin, and possibly lose that?" OOC: Diplomacy to be friendly? 22

Paige singles out Moreth, the fellow in charge of security at the Mining Guild. ”Moreth, right? Security at the Mining Guild? So, what’s the scariest thing you’ve ever fought?” The half elf smiles expectantly, hoping the man has a good story. (Diplomacy = 20)

Perhaps there's no ordinary cheating going on, but...magic? Detect Magic might be useful. He wonders if he can cast the spell unobtrusively. Would it set off alarms?

It might. I can't be first person to think of using magic here.

Fingers scans the room looking for Zolbur (probably not here) or the staff member who brought us to see him. Failing that, he'll try talking to one of the bouncers. He wants to ask what they do to detect or prevent spell use at The Crypt.

Burton continues to observe and wonders if the Patchers have the skills for exploring without getting caught.

Kwarsk moves up to the human who has a strong interest in the game. The man does notice, and does not flinch when poked. Eh, not really. There are more exciting games here than this. Excuse me, it's time for some more refreshments. He moves off, and Kwarsk notices he looks around until he finds a server with non alcoholic drinks, including the white gold

Zarsellet comments on the kids. It is known that the orphans have a tremendous knack for finding things out. It is also known that the Patchers are concerned over their safety. Hopefully they will reduce the chances they take. Zarsellet notes that kids in general can be a good source of information if you know how to talk to them.

Zarsellet meets with Novak, and finds the gnome is quite amenable to a conversation. Well, let me think...yes there are some. Gnomes can be pretty good at finding good places to dig for valuable stuff. Novak flips a coin across his fingers, rolling over each one. As it rolls across the last it seems to disappear. Then he holds it up for Zarsellet to see...from his other hand. Good trick eh? The kids love it at least. I like to practice so I keep my fingers nimble. I haven't played much tonight, I was a bit disappointed that the games are run fair. It's not as much fun trying to cheat unless the house is already doing it. Plus, can't use magic or the bouncers will know. Kinda takes the fun out of it.

Moreth greets Paige as she approaches him. Well, glad to see you again. How did that last little venture pay out? Scariest? Hmm, must have been that wyvern. Creature had a lair in a cave with access to an excellent silver vein. We needed to clear it out.. Maybe it is Paige's imagination, but was Moreth flexing his muscles a bit while talking? Trying to impress?

Fingers wonders about using magic in the Crypt. He finds one of the bouncers and asks the ogre about it. Sir, Zolbur asked us to help if asked. We have some detection magic in place, and the bouncers are all connected to it. If anyone uses magic, we'll know, and we gently escort them outside. Our reputation on this is known, and most no longer try.

Rhys is focused on the game, and on Ardreth. He places the bet, and Ardreth bets against him as promised. The lucky spinner wheel starts up, the ball is released, and it lands on.....'19' Rhys is the winner, and collects 200gp in chips. Ardreth of course, has something to say. Well, I suppose my luck wasn't going to hold forever. Hmmm. This game is getting boring. What do you say we head to the lower level, where the exciting bets take place?

That sounds like so much fun…I mean, that sounds so dangerous!” The red-headed half elf isn’t really at her best when trying to play the coquette. (Diplomacy = 16) However, she plows on in an effort to get a little more information: ”I’ve heard some of the folks in this place use the term ‘delver’. Are they talking about you and your companions from the Mining Guild? Paige watches to see how the man responds to her use of the term ‘delver’ (Perception = 20).

He turns and glances around the room, then adds, "But you say that you're disappointed that the games are fair? Why? Actually I wasn't sure. Mine seemed to run fair at first, my balance of coin going up and down pretty even. But then I had a run of bad luck and it was like a stream of gold running through my fingers. Oh, I stopped before losing my shirt. My Da told me 'Always know when to stop so you don't end up a beggar!'"

He pauses for slight emphasis, "but how would i, or you know that the house isn't cheating? or is cheating?"

Burton prepares to follow Rhys, hopefully discreetly.

Moreth smiles and seems to enjoy the attention he is getting from Paige. It was a little dangerous, but we knew what to expect and prepared for it. He shows no surprise when Paige mentions 'delver' Hmm not that I've ever heard. Of course the term is used in mining operations, but I haven't heard it used in reference to anyone in the Mining Guild.

Novak chuckles. Oh no secret there. I could learn a new trick by watching! Plus it's more fun to win when the odds are actually stacked against you. There's no way to know for sure of course, but it seems to me there are enough winners to keep the grumbling from the losers pretty low. The House certainly seems to be making money, but doing so without fleecing people.

Kwarsk and Fingers debate what they have learned. One thing you do know is that the Crypt's employees are all dressed in 'uniform' and Zolbur did not mention using or needing undercover agents.

Ardreth leads the way to a large, wide double door. There is a bouncer stationed here, and he merely opens the door as you approach. My name is Ardreth. He smiles, and the smile is not warm or friendly. I enjoy a bit of sport in my gambling, how about you?

The stairs down are also double-wide and are well kept and clean. DC 10 perception checks to reveal spoiler: Highlight to display spoiler: {you notice scratch marks on the walls, floor, and railing.} Upon reaching the bottom, the stairs open into a wide walkway that circles an arena. The arena is on a lower level than the walkway and the seating that surrounds it. From here you can see where larger creatures would be able to be brought down the stairs and then down a removable ramp into the arena. In the arena a number of very solid large doors line the walls, behind which presumably are cages with various creatures for the combat.

The place is almost full, as a number of nobles and even average citizens bet on the contests in the arena on a regular basis. Bets can be placed at an office window on one side, and several guards can be seen around the walkway and also at the office. Ardreth explains that nobles sometimes settle disputes or debts here, pitting monsters or gladiators against each other that they have hired. Citizens sometimes do so as well, usually to pay off a debt, but they end up fighting themselves since they can’t afford to hire proxies. Most matches here are not to the death, and are encouraged to be mostly for entertainment.

So, would you like to bet against me in the next match?

OOC- the Patchers all notice Rhys and Ardreth going downstairs and can follow if they wish. You also notice the man who was observing Rhys and Ardreth earlier goes downstairs.

I hope they keep running it like this. That's more fun for me!" He pauses for a second and adds with a frown, "I gotta go, but I heard a couple of guys talking... they were over by the 21 game. Novak demonstrates the 'trick' for Zarsellet. It takes some practice, but the key is you have a separate coin in your other hand, that just seems to have no way to have jumped from one hand to the other, when it was actually there all along! Novak shakes his head at Zarsellet's question. Hmm, not sure if I've heard of that one before. But, I am mostly focused on contracts for the Mining Guild, so my knowledge is limited if they don't interact with us.

Ovius joins those who have gone to the basement level. A server asks if he would like a drink.

Kwarsk and Fingers head down to the lower level. The bouncer raises and eyebrow and grunts when Fingers casts a spell, but takes no other action.

Moreth seems willing to be lead anywhere Paige would like to take him. He does have some insight on what happens below. I've been here before. It's an arena of sorts, and the matches are usually more for entertainment than bloodshed. Still, sometimes people are hurt or killed there.

Ardreth seems amused at the series of questions. My, you really are new here aren't you? Well, let's see. We'll have to check at the cashier's window to see what the next bout will be. You can place a bet with the house, or, they will hold bets placed against another bettor. This happens more than you might think, as nobles and even commoners sometimes come here to settle disputes. Any rules for the match are agreed in advance between the two parties. Shall we see what's next?

Anyone who checks in at the cashier's window will learn that the next match is between a group of goblins and kobolds. They will be fighting until one side 'wins' only knockouts are required, and not kills. If you ask around, a few spectators note, this match happens roughly once a week, and is a popular event.

Ardreth offers to match any bet Rhys(or the Patchers) are willing to put up. He offers to let you pick first, which side you think will win.

Burton joins the team downstairs and finds a spot in the crowd to continue observing Ardreth

Fingers and Kwarsk look around. The man they were following has at least for the moment, disappeared into the crowd. However, they do come across an old acquaintance, it is King Meekcheek. He seems to be working the crowd, trying to convince people to bet on the kobolds.

Zarsellet follows the team downstairs. He finds several open benches, and several sections are sized for halflings and gnomes.

Rhys places a bet on the goblins, and Ardreth matches it, betting on the kobolds. Who me? There is a difference between thinking you are important, and knowing you are. Many here do not know who I am, however, I assure you I am very important.

Moreth finds a seat with Paige. This should be interesting. I hear the kobolds recently located here from the hills outside the City. Let's see how they do.

An announcer lets everyone know the betting window will be closing soon. As if on cue, the number of servers seems to increase, and they try to sell drinks and food to those who may be interested. Most of the crowd settles into seats, while some of them stand near guardrails to get a better look.

A few minutes later, the doors on either end of the arena open, and 6 goblins enter from one side, and 6 kobolds from the other. Some in the crowd cheer or jeer, depending on their preference. The combatants stand there and wait for the announcement for the match to begin....

Zarsellet wonders whether the two teams are friends out of the arena setting?

Waiting for the announcer to start the match Zarsellet watches the audience with far more interest than he has for the actual event.

Great adventuring minds think alike, as Kwarsk too also ponders whether these are the same kobolds from the blue glowing cave... Was one of them named King Meekcheek? Paige and Kwarsk both recognize that the kobolds do appear to be from the same clan that was rousted from the blue cave. Is it the same king? If not, one of the others took up the mantle, and the name.

The signal is given. The kobolds run out into the arena and begin setting up traps and tipping over barrels and moving crates as obstacles.

It might seem like the goblins could take advantage of this but....they are delighted to find supplies for lighting torches and proceed to do so. They seem to be armed with clubs, and it doesn't take long before most of them are lit. They start waving them around and there are some chuckles from the crowd.

The crowd leans forward, anticipation in the air.

Ardreth ponders Rhys' question. Hmmm, no, I don't think I have heard of him. He must not be that important. With a jeering smile, Ardreth turns back to the arena to watch. You're not sure if he's smiling due to the insult or the combat about to begin, but either way it's a bit....unnerving.

The final chime is rung and the goblins charge at the kobolds. Two of them end up getting their legs tangled up and they trip each other. Ordinarily they might be upset, but their antics have managed to set a crate on fire, and the as they get up one of them ends up lighting the other ones' tunic as well.

The rest of the goblins finish the charge and end up tripping over traps, and getting shot by set crossbows. From where you are, you can see they do not stick in, and there is no blood. The ends are blunted. The goblins who are hit grunt and yowl in pain.

It doesn't go all against them though, as once they get close to the kobolds, they start beating on them with their flaming clubs. The fire doesn't last long, the clubs weren't wrapped well with cloth, and as the fires go out, some of the goblins go back to re-light them.

The whole arena floor turns a bit chaotic, with little skirmishes, goblins and kobolds running around, and things being lit on fire. The crowd cheers for 'their' team, hoping to win some bets against the house.

For the Patchers who are also observing the crowd....you finally spot the man who was observing the game upstairs. He isn't watching the arena, and instead seems to be scanning the crowd and paying special attention to anyone who is looking around instead of watching the match.....

As the arena contest continues, many of you spot a second man who seems to be more interested in what Ardreth is doing than what is going on in the arena. It's too early to tell if they are guards of some kind or looking to start trouble with Ardreth. It might be difficult to believe Ardreth could have any enemies considering how polite and charming he is. There is no sign among the crowd of any Pyramid, but you can find WLA badges, Star Mages Guild, Chancer's Club, Sage's guild, and even a Mailed Fist badge among the crowd.

The arena match continues for a few more minutes. Since many of the Patchers aren't watching, they can get some highlights from people in the crowd if asked.

-a goblin lights his teammate on fire laughing as he runs around to put it out.
-a kobold sets off a trap, aimed a goblin but it backfires and hit knocks him out
-a goblin holds his flaming club too close to his head and sets his hair on fire, he dunks it in a bucket to put it out (With fire and goblins, there are wisely a number of buckets of water about)
-a kobold crits with a crossbow bolt, hitting a goblin between the eyes, knocking him out. he falls over as if in slow motion
-a goblin tries to acrobatically leap onto a kobold but misses, landing face first in the dirt(oof!)

Overall, the combat is chaotic and just a bit entertaining. There is a great deal of taunting, yelling, and screaming, (and that's just the spectators!) When it is over, two goblins are still standing(one with a tiny fire on his tunic), and when they realize they won, much rejoicing is had. The crowd enjoys the spectacle, and the winners go to the office window to collect their winnings.

Ardreth says Well, that was exciting, right. Too bad more of the little blighters didn’t get canceled.(Rhys can collect the winnings from the cashier) Say, I wonder if you would be interested in another match, something a bit more personal? If you agree to face off against a monster my employer recently purchased, you can double your money. What do you say? You don't even have to fight alone, you can bring some friends if you have any.

Ardreth appears pleased that you might accept his challenge.

The rules are whatever is agreed upon. You may use magic if you would like to agree to that. Even before the match starts if you feel the need, I have no objection. As for non-lethal, well it is an unthinking creature really, and I'm sure no one will miss it. But you are certainly welcome to use non-lethal force, and in fact, that will save my master some coin if he doesn't have to replace it. However, since the creature is what it is, there is no way to compel it to use non-lethal force.

Your entire team may participate, I have no issue with that. As for the nature of the creature, well, it is a surprise for the crowd and I can't reveal it in advance. Was there anything else?

Rhys returns once more to Ardreth with one last question. ”I hate to be a bother, but my friends are already contemplating surrender and wish to know if the monster can be called off should we lay down our arms?”. The elf can barely believe he is asking the question to begin with and can only imagine what Ardreth must think of this less than heroic group. Perhaps he will believe they are simply representatives of the SPCM (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Monsters) rather than the rubes Rhys believes they will be taken for.

The team discusses some supplies they might want for the match. If asked, The Crypt should be able to supply most of it.

Ardreth smiles, as only he can. Well, if it is your primary concern, I'm sure the Crypt's guards will be able to keep the situation from getting out of control. Some of those guards are very large, but don't let the tuxes fool you, I'm sure they are tougher than they look. This is however, outside my area of influence. You will have to make some such agreement with the Crypt if that is your wish.

The crowd seems to be getting slightly restless, waiting to see what the next match will be.

While Rhys is negotiating terms with the haughty elf, and/or the employees of The Crypt Paige will say her piece:”I’ll do what I can to improve our chances of success without touching my weapons, but if things go south, I’m coming in swinging, and I won’t hesitate to use lethal force.” The cleric crosses her arms over her chest with a martial gleam in her eye. ”In for a penny, in for a pound! I say we wager it all!”.

”Kwarsk, I think he is testing us. For what reason Imam not sure. I have no confidence that this will be anything less than lethal, nor do I really believe the Crypt staff will be able to intercede on our behalf. If we are going to do this we all need to be on the same page, and if so I would bet 1000 gp. All or nothing. If we lose we may not survive and won’t need the money. If we win…well an extra 1000 gp would be quite helpful and hopefully we learn something more about his boss and the Pyramid group.”. Rhys looks about his fellow adventurers for their decision.

OOC: Are there doors or gateways where the contestants enter the arena? How far is it from the arena floor to the seats of the observers? [b]I'm okay to fight. Like I was saying, sooner or later, without warning we're going to be fighting some creature we've never seen and have to make up tactics on the fly. This will be good practice.

Zar, cast one of the Heroisms on Paige. The longer she stays awake, the longer she can keep us awake.

Rhys, try negotiating with Ardeth. We can take a penalty if we have to kill it, but we should get extra if we can just take it down.

I'll talk to the arena manager; I can use some of those blunted crossbow bolts. I'll also ask about ropes, nets, and wooden weapons. Anything else?

fight club -DMBZ
Friday September 22nd, 2023 8:24:03 AM

The team discusses their options with the fight.

There are doors(and stairs behind them) that lead to the lower area where the contestants prepare. (Or are held) Directly in front of the stairs leading down from the upper gambling halls, there is a spot where planks are set to usher creatures into the arena. After the creatures have been moved to the arena floor, the planks are removed.

The arena floor is about 10 feet below the lowest level of seating. They do not seem too concerned about fighting endangering the crowd. There are thick railings about the rim. These will not specifically stop all projectiles, but they do offer very significant cover. Area spells could hit the spectators, but this does not seem to have been an issue thus far.

The arena manager will offer blunted ammo if asked, along with rope, nets and wooden weapons. They have a good supply of wooden weapons as many of the matches are non-lethal.

If asked, Ardreth indicates he expected the fight to be to the death, but he will agree with a result of subdued(knockout). He offers no premium for saving the creature, and still offers to match any wager the Patchers care to make.

The crowd has started to take notice of the negotiations and some speculation has begun on whether the heroes will be fighting.

The arena manager waits to confirm if you will be agreeing to the match........

Ardreth is quite pleased to see you have accepted his challenge. Wonderful. I shall match the bet as I agreed. Ardreth leaves 1000gp worth of chips and coin with the cashier.

Now, I believe I agreed you could prepare as you wish. Good luck! You aren't quite sure, but Ardreth may not have really been wishing you luck.

Zarsellet cast a spell on page(please keep track of all durations starting with this post)

Paige casts a spell on Rhys from her wand. On the way to the cashier's office, Moreth stops her. I don't trust this elf your friend is negotiating with. My training is telling me he is bad news. Be careful and don't take this lightly, kill his creature if you have to.

Rhys pays the cashier, readies a potion and picks up a few supplies.

Kwarsk drinks a potion, and follows the team

Fingers uses his wand on Burton and prepares some extra supplies. (OOC- yes, same stats, non-lethal)

Burton is ready, and warns if his magic is needed, the results are lethal.

Linden and Ovius stop you by the door and excuse themselves from the fight. They have received additional instructions from Zolbur and are following a new lead. (Linden and Ovius are exiting the game at this time, the players have been given a welcome to return if they'd like after rl situations improve)

One of the guards escorts you to a door near the cashier's office. He leads you down a short corridor, and then to a set of steps. At the bottom, he passes a few doors and then opens one for you. Inside, there are a number of weapons, including wooden ones that you may pick from. He tells you, When you hear the chime, go ahead out through the doors on the other side of the room. They lead directly to the arena floor. My understanding is your opponent will be released a few moments(2 rounds) after you enter. I don't care for Ardreth and I hope you beat the stuffing out of his monster. Good luck.

From inside the room, you can hear the increase in volume from the spectators as the next match is announced. It seems anticipation is in the air.....

The doors open! And two creatures emerge. By their look you make them out to be Otyughs. A quick look at Ardreth shows that sinister smile on his face. It looks like he intentionally deceived you regarding the number of creatures.

Several things happen, nearly all at once.
-Rhys tosses the net onto the nearest otyugh. The attack succeeds, but due to the size of the creature, it doesn't seem to impair it much. (slowed)
-the eagle is in position and may make a AoO
-the two men who had previously been taking an interest in Ardreth had positioned themselves above the door the otyughs emerged from. As the creatures enter the arena, each of them tosses a vial of some liquid on the creatures. They recoil briefly as if in pain, and then howl as if in a rage.
-Zarsellet is in position and ready to act
-Kwarsk is in position in the middle of the arena, and the second otyugh shambles up to him(can take AoO with the prepped alchemist fire)
-Fingers drops a grease spell in the doorway as they emerge. Both of them make the save. The second otyugh moves out(and up to Kwarsk). The first otyugh stops on the area where the grease is after having a net tossed onto it.(will need to re-check if it tries to move)
-Paige had completed her summon spell(the eagle can attack normally this round)
-Burton is ready to act

The first otyugh takes a tentacles swipe at the eagle, hit AC 17, 6dmg (also rolled a twenty, the eagle is now grappled)
the second otyugh swipes a tentacle at Kwarsk, hit AC 23(miss) It looks both angry and hungry......

(OOC - No AoOs with Ranged weapons; however, since we had 2 rounds to set up I will presume Kwarsk had a Readied Action to throw the flask at the first foe closing to within 10 feet)

Kwarsk's (readied) throw of alchemist's fire at O2 easily lands a direct hit on the huge creature (Touch AC 16, including Bardsong), burning it for 5 damage (including Bardsong) on its approach, with Kwarsk safely out of the splash zone.

Kwarsk nimbly blocks the Otyugh's strike with his Tower Shield and then draws his dwarven waraxe and silently attempts his own "greeting," his waraxe trying hard to penetrate the creature's rubbery (?), scaly (?) hide... (hit AC 16; if a hit, then 14 damage!)

O2 burns... (OOC - See Below)

(DM Sanity:
Bardsong (until Zarsellet stops)

Potion of Barkskin +2 AC - 30 minutes minus maybe 30 seconds (5 rounds from drinking it outside until now), tops. It'll last the whole battle.

Alchemist's Fire - A direct hit deals 1d6 points of fire damage. Every creature within 5 feet of the point where the flask hits takes 1 point of fire damage from the splash. On the round following a direct hit, the target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. If desired, the target can use a full-round action to attempt to extinguish the flames before taking this additional damage. Extinguishing the flames requires a DC 15 Reflex save. Rolling on the ground provides the target a +2 bonus on the save. Leaping into a large body of water or magically extinguishing the flames automatically smothers the fire.)

Fingers repositions, and fires his crossbow.(you did not indicate, I picked 2 for the hit since it is closer)

Zarsellet inspires courage for the team!

Burton casts a spell, and a ray streaks out at Otyugh2. Thank to Zarsellet's inspiration, the ray hits! The Otyugh staggers for a moment as some of its' strength is drained away.

The eagle did not get through the Otyugh's tough hide. (and the otyugh quickly sent it back its' own plane) Paige is not discouraged, and casts another spell at the Otyugh1, a mighty spiritual hammer appears and strikes the creature solidly.

Rhys shows off his acrobatic skill, much to the delight of the crowd. He strikes the Otyugh1 with a solid slash, and then moves just out of reach.

Kwarsk hits the Otyugh with an alchemist fire as it moved forward. He 'greets' the creature with his axe, but the tough hide barely absorbs the hit.(did you add inspire courage?) OOC- Kwarsk roll for burning damage next post

The crowd cheers the spectacle of the fight. This is the most intense combat they have seen here recently. Most of the crowd seems to be in your corner....

Otyugh1 manages to move out of the grease area and shuffles over towards Rhys. It takes a lazy swipe at Rhys, but the net appears to have tangled it up.

Otyugh2 throws tentacles and teeth at Kwarsk, but does not get through the dwarf's tough armor.

Otyugh1, 15 damage taken
Otyugh2, 8(nonlethal) damage taken, 5 damage taken, -7 STR

(OOC - The fire burns O2 for 2 points, and ceases.

Re: last round - yes, included bardsong; Kwarsk's AC is much better than his to-hit...)

Kwarsk notices that following Burton's black ray O2 is weaker and more sluggish... and Rhys fights alone...

Kwarsk moves ten feet to Flank O1 with Rhys. (J8 -> I6 and any Otyugh with Reach gains 1 AoO vs. AC 31. (Kwarsk has Mobility))

Kwarsk winds up a sideways swing and cuts hard, but can't see if the axe's edge penetrated O1's tough hide just yet.
(OOC - hit AC 17 for 10 damage)

"Your swing," Kwarsk says to Rhys, loud enough to be heard over the crowd's roar.

Zarsellet continues his bardic Inspire Courage for the team. He steps back from the disgusting creature and takes a shot at it with his bow, hoping that the little arrow can penetrate the hide of the creature.

OOC: Continuing the bardic performance is a free action, round 2 of 13. 27 to hit O2 with short bow. Actually 3 points of damage, I forgot to add point blank shot +1 damage.

Burton points at the closest creature and casts Scorching Ray at it Touch Attack AC25 for (4d6+1) 20 points of fire damage. "I suspect these creatures are not going to be holding back, particularly after our friends enraged them. I would suggest we don't hold back and go for the kill."

Rhys takes another swing when the creature appears distracted by Kwarsk. [Hit AC 17 for 15 hp]. The elf rues his errant swing but hopes the entanglement of the net will make the creature more vulnerable. Rather than retreat in defence, he elects to hold his ground and continue providing a distraction for his companion.

”Lets keep this one occupied!” he calls out to Kwarsk.

fight club -DMBZ  d20+5=15 ; d20+5=20 ;

Kwarsk moves, setting up a flank. The movement also provokes some attacks from these creatures with their reach. A bite and then a tentacle strike at Kwarsk, but both bounce off the tough armor. Kwarsk puts his axe to work and strikes the Otyugh. Then he tries to get the crowd going and finds some success. The cheering seems to be getting louder.

Fingers fires again, but the bolt does not strike the creature

Zarsellet continues (singing? what type of performance is it) and adds some more ranged fire. The arrow penetrates the thick hide and does (3) damage.

Paige joins the fray and smashes Otyugh2 with her morningstar. The spiritual hammer tries to follow the example, but misses this time.

Burton casts a spell, and the fiery ray strikes Otyugh2. The damage proves to be too much for the creature, it drops to the ground, and moves no more.

Rhys takes advantage of the flank and presses the attack. A solid strike from his sword leaves a very large gash in the creature's side. It flops to the ground, and if you thought they smelled bad on the outside, well........

Otyugh1, AC17, 40 damage taken
Otyugh2, AC17, 8(nonlethal) damage taken, 42 damage taken, -7 STR

The Patchers suddenly find themselves victorious. As the realization falls over the crowd, the noise of the cheering reaches a crescendo. Looking up to the crowd, a few key moments are noticed:

Moreth can be seen tipping his hat to Paige in congratulations
Ardreth can be seen slamming his fist on the railing. He then whistles once and turns to leave
The two henchman also look to turn and leave but are having a little more trouble moving through the crowd.
Zolbur can be seen, and the look on his face is one of immense relief.

The heroes have the initiative....

Kwarsk shouts, "Rhys, can you get up there (nods head towards henchmen) and cut off the escape of the ones who threw the bottles on the monsters? We need to find out what connection they have with Ardreth! We'll keep the crowd entertained!"

Kwarsk then turns to the other Patchers, "Let's distract the crowd while Rhys apprehends the ones who threw potions on the monsters - a big group bow at the same time should do the trick!"

Kwarsk looks to see if the group will follow along to free Rhys to pursue the henchmen, and in the meantime raises his arms to the crowd and puts a big smile on his face.

(OOC - Kwarsk will bow once it becomes clear the group will do the same.)

Seeing the monsters drop, and Ardreth and the two apparent henchmen trying to escape Zarsellet raises his voice to a screaming level and changes the magic of his Bardic Performance to Fascination. "Thank you people! We have so quickly proven that these disgusting monsters cannot prevail over your heroes! Let's all raise a drink and cheer! Enjoy the victory!"

OOC: Targeting Ardreth and the other two with "Fascinate (Su): At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and capable of paying attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creatures affected. The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents this ability from working. For every three levels the bard has attained beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with this ability." Will Save DC15 negates the effect. Bardic Performance round 3 of 13.

Paige keeps an eye on the Otyugh in front of her (#2) unsure if he is indeed dead, or just unconscious.

Out of the corner of her eye, she notes Moreth’s actions, and that of Ardreth and his henchmen. She directs her spiritual Warhammer into position in front of the nasty elf, but does not use it to attack, much as she is tempted.
